The Muscle Shoals and Huntsville areas are usually known for things like rich music history and the ground-breaking space industry, but both also feature some great golf courses.

Starting off in Alabama’s largest populated city (Huntsville has over 228,000 residents), Hampton Cove is part of the prestigious Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

The 54-hole facility features the Highlands Course, River Course and a Short Course.

The Highlands Course is one of the most picturesque and playable courses on the trail. The River Course is the only RTJ course without a single bunker. The Short Course is an open links-style layout with water in play on 11 holes.

Just east in nearby Scottsboro sits Goose Pond Colony Resort and its two courses — Lake and Plantation. The Lake Course features views of the Tennessee River on almost every hole. The Plantation Course is an open tract with plenty of hazards.

In the Northwestern part of the state sits the 36-hole facility known as The Shoals. It features The Fighting Joe Course, which was the first trail course to play at over 8,000 yards from the tips. The second course is the Schoolmaster, named after President Woodrow Wilson. Two holes standout on the Schoolmaster Course — No.18 because of it being on a high bluff overlooking the Tennessee River and the second hole that has a beautiful waterfall behind the green.

Despite being a long course,Fighting Joe has wide fairways and the key is playing from the correct tees. The Schoolmaster has tree-lined fairways (not as wide as its neighboring course) and well-protected greens. It can play just under 8,000 yards from the tips!

Together The Shoals and Hampton Cove are known as the Northern Gateway to the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. The courses are just under 70 miles from each other, but normally the first two that golfers from the North are likely to play.

Twenty-five miles to the east of The Shoals is Joe Wheeler State Park, which is home to The General Golf

Course in Rogersville. The General Golf Course is set on rolling hills and features abundant wildlife as the fun course is inside a game sanctuary.
