More Than You Could Have Ever

Dreamed Of Doing In One Vacation Stay

Nemacolin, in the picturesque Laurel Highlands about one hour southeast of Pittsburgh, is the kind of resort destination that reminds you why you travel in the first place: to escape the everyday and immerse yourself in experiences that are unlike anything you’d find back home.

This larger-than-life resort nestled in the Allegheny Mountains is home to Mystic Rock and Shepherd’s Rock, two imaginative championship courses designed by the legendary Pete Dye that take full advantage of the area’s vast,

rugged topography, lush terrain and majestic sweeping vistas. Just down the road from architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s acclaimed masterpiece Fallingwater and Fort Necessity National Battlefield (site of the opening action of the French and Indian War in 1754), Nemacolin is making its own distinctive brand of history in those nature-rich Laurel Highlands.

Owned by the visionary Hardy family who founded and operate 84 Lumber, Nemacolin takes the concept of “having it all” and elevates it to having more than you could have ever dreamed

of doing in one vacation stay.

Nemacolin has amenities and attractions to indulge every taste and most every whimsy, including a diverse and internationally acclaimed art collection, The Hardy Room, The Tea Room, general store, Italian (at the family-style Barattolo) and luxe seafood (the chic Aqueous) restaurants, luxury shopping boutiques, a cozy tavern and even a 1950s-style ice cream parlor. Beyond golf, outdoor adventurers can enjoy The Nemacolin Field Club; Wildlife Adventures that features everything from safari tours to

dog sledding; The Peak adventure center (complete with zip lines and climbing wall, paintball field and cosmic bowling); and Jeep Off-Road Driving, fly fishing as well as antique auto and aircraft collections.

You’ll find artwork and sculptures at almost every turn at Nemacolin. It’s a feast for the senses that somehow fits seamlessly along with the resort’s breathtaking natural surroundings. Nemacolin offers guests luxuriously appointed guest rooms, suites, townhouses and private upscale homes, including Falling Rock, a AAA Five Diamond boutique hotel with rooms overlooking the Mystic Rock course.

The first sight that captivates your attention once you enter the resort property is The Chateau, a stunning, palatial structure inspired by The Ritz Paris. It’s fun to roam its hallways and enjoy the art, shopping and numerous places to sit and enjoy the setting. The Lodge, a classic English Tudor-style hotel and townhomes and luxury vacation homes, is being reimagined as The Grand Lodge and will be reopening in August of 2023.

I came to Nemacolin for the golf I’d heard so much about and now I’m the one telling everyone about my experiences on Mystic Rock, Shepherd’s Rock and all the state-of-the-art toys inside The

Nemacolin Golf Academy. The all-season entertainment and game improvement space is a great place to play and learn on TrackMan or get a lesson or custom fitting from director of instruction Mike LaBella and his team.

Teeing it up at Nemacolin means being ready to tackle the crafty Pete Dye and walk in the footsteps of the PGA Tour players who competed in the 84 Lumber Classic from 2003 to 2006, including champions like Vijay Singh Open Championship winner Ben Curtis.

Mystic Rock is a sterling example of a more subtle and cerebral side of Dye. He lets the rolling land dictate the routing and shot values here with ample landing areas, walkability and serene sight lines. There are very few daunting forced carries, but endless risk-reward scenarios and plenty of ways to make the round more complicated than it needs to be. Positioning off the tee and hitting to the correct parts of the green comes into play routinely as Dye plays with angles, misdirection, false fronts and greens that run off the sides or back if you mis-club.

There’s a great mix of short par 4s like the first hole, the sneaky-long, uphill fourth - which is one of the few holes that asks for a tee shot to carry water –and more humbling long holes like the daunting 476-yard ninth with water left off the tee and a narrow, sloping green. You can gain momentum early in the round with manageable par 5s at the fifth and eighth holes and a wedge-shot par 3 at number seven, but the geometry Dye throws at you on holes like nine, the winding, 439-yard par-4 10th and the long,

TrackMan at Nemacolin Golf Academy Dining at Aqueous

Falling Rock Hotel’s infinity pool

dogleg-right uphill par-five 11th. After a satisfying stretch of par fours at 13, 14 and 15. Nemacolin closes with a fun riskreward par 5, a long, challenging par 3, with water lurking left, and uphill par 4 that demands solid strikes and respect of the angles of play. Mystic belongs in the conversation with some of Dye’s best work.

At Shepherd’s Rock, the mischievous side of Pete Dye and his associate Tim Liddy come out to play. You’ll find yourself playing shots 40 feet from the hole to allow Dye’s slopes to (hopefully) do their work and you’ll come to respect false fronts that can send even well struck shots that look pin high back down the front edge of the green and toward the man who hit it. What you probably won’t figure out on the first try is the wildly sloping greens or the ideal angles into those greens. Our group

saw putts roll 15 feet by the hole and on to the fringe, down the wrong side of slopes and farther from the hole than they began and, most often, sliding past the hole due to sneaky-swift speed.

That said, there’s a great collection of beautiful holes that rise up hills and plunge down valleys. The crafty and postcardworthy 11th is one of the handsomest holes on the property while views from fifth, seventh, 16th and 17th holes are extraordinary places to enjoy the nature around you. The 18th hole is a terrific and memorable par 4 that demands a strong drive that is safe from ponds and marshes right and trees left. The waterfalls and majestic setting near the green will inspire you to return for another challenge.

The resort’s entertainment and adventure offerings are so creative, you

can’t help but feel the Hardy family’s personal touches all over the grounds. It’s like they’ve invited you to hang out at their estate and let your hair down for as long as you like.

Set in an area steeped in rich American, architectural and agricultural history, Nemacolin is carving out its own distinctive legacy in the nature-rich Laurel Highlands. GRD

BOYNE Golf’s Bernie Friedrich Named 2023 PGA Golf Executive of the Year

Boyne Resorts announces Bernie Friedrich, longtime Senior Vice President of Golf Operations, has been named 2023 PGA Golf Executive of The Year by PGA of America. The honor recognizes outstanding services in an executive management position, as well as qualities of leadership, vision, courage, moral character, and a substantial record of service to the Association and the game.

Friedrich, who recently transitioned into the Director of Golf Course Renovations and Development role, has been a PGA member for nearly 40 years. He started his career as a golf professional at Boyne Mountain Resort in 1976 and has been instrumental in leading the Company’s growing golf division, overseeing its 13 resort courses and semi-private clubs in Michigan, Maine, and Montana. This included oversight of all staff, course agronomy, and marketing nationwide, plus two golf membership groups — Bay Harbor Golf Club and Country Club of Boyne.

“I’m honored and humbled to have my name on this award and be associated with the likes of previous winners,” says Friedrich. “I’m excited for our staff, PGA Professionals, and superintendents. Collectively, they are the winners of this award along with Boyne Resorts, for their dedication to golf and helping us continue to improve our product.”

A multi award-winning PGA member at the Section level, Friedrich has been recognized as Golf Professional of the Year twice (1998, 2001), a Bill Strausbaugh Award recipient (2019) for outstanding integrity and character of a top PGA member, PGA Golf Executive of the Year (2021) and five times as Merchandiser of the Year (1990-’92, 1995-’96). In 2019, he was inducted into both the Michigan PGA Hall of Fame and the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame. Friedrich also received the Lyle Leeke Distinguished Service Award (2018) from the Michigan Golf Course Owners Association (MGCOA) and was recognized by the American Junior Golf Association as Golf Course Executive of the Year in 2018.

Friedrich sets the best-in-class standard for up-and-coming PGA Professionals who want to excel at their profession. This has included mentoring many PGA professional and resort employees within and from outside of Boyne Resorts’ operations. He is also credited with numerous programs and practices that have

influenced and positively impacted the golf industry.

“Aside from having a love for the game, you need to be skilled in all aspects of golf operations – including accounting, food and beverage, course agronomy practices, and inventories,” he says. “When building a great team, you need to teach and empower them to make decisions – to hold them accountable and to empower them to hold you accountable. Giving them the tools to grow and continue to expand their careers, it’s more than just a job. To become a great PGA Professional, it’s important to have a written mission statement that belongs to everyone. The staff will appreciate this, as they know what’s expected and will hold each other accountable. It’s also important to have team building functions and getting everyone involved in community engagement. Everyone’s responsible for growing the game and developing programs for youth participation.”

Friedrich continues to serve in various capacities for the Michigan PGA including the Michigan PGA Employment Committee. His most rewarding achievement has been the charitable efforts he has implemented, which continue to be made by BOYNE Golf’s professionals. He is a founding member and board member of The First Tee of Northern Michigan and is a cofounder of Harbor Cup Fund, a Michigan-based charitable fund that has raised more than $700,000 since its inception in 1997.

This past year, Team BOYNE, led by Friedrich, raised a recordbreaking $90,000 for Manna Food Center, a Northern Michigan food bank, and The First Tee of Northern Michigan. The donation to Manna provided 240,000 meals to local families in need.

The Schondorf, Germany native moved to Michigan as a young boy. He attended Northern Michigan University and has also been involved in course development during his 46 years with Boyne Resorts.

Innisbrook Golf

Tampa Area Golf & Resort Is Fantastic Florida Get-A-Way Destination!

Iyou’ve been dreaming about that long overdue golf trip destination lately, then be sure to consider Florida’s Innisbrook Resort. It may be the answer for you, your family, your customers and or co-workers or with your favorite golf buddies.

Located in Palm Harbor, Innisbrook is situated on 900 acres of rolling terrain about 25 minutes from the Tampa International Airport. This historic resort features 72 holes of championship golf, over 600 guest rooms and suites, 4 restaurants, along with multiple swimming pools, conference halls & meeting rooms, biking and walking trails, tennis courts, fitness center, nature preserve and much more.

Innisbrook has been around since 1970 and if you heard that this is an oldfashioned golf resort, then you’re in for very pleasant surprise. While still synonymous with golf, Innisbrook offers so much more to those seeking a full vacation and R&R who wish to relax and be pampered with the many other activities and venues the resort has to offer such as the Salamander Spa, Loch Ness Monster Pool and award winning Packard’s Steakhouse.

I had the opportunity to experience Innisbrook here in late January and caught up with Ramona Herald, the Director of Public Relations and Membership. “We are renovating Packard Steakhouse, Turnberry Pub, as well as upgrades to lodging and refurbishing of the property with changes to the North Course,” Ramona said.

Innisbrook’s 4 golf courses were designed by the renowned golf architect Larry Packard, who built and designed hundreds of courses across the U.S. in his legendary career. Of the estimated 600 layouts he worked on, the famed Copperhead course, home to the PGA’s Valspar Championship, is known as his crowning achievement. Packard’s design style included fast greens with gentle slopes, lots of elevated bunkers that were primarily positioned into mounds to catch errant drives or mishit approach shots. He also liked to feature the doubledogleg par 5, shaped like the letter S, which you see on Copperhead’s par 5 14th hole.

Aside from the signature Copperhead course – par 71, over 7,300 from the back tees - , the other championship designs include the Island Course – par 72, over

7,100 yards from the ; the South Course – par 71, over 6,600 yards and the North Course, the shortest – par 70 at almost 6,100 yards.

All four courses feature expansive and gorgeous views, significant elevation changes – up to 80 feet in some spots, strategic and deep bunkering and lightning fast greens. Many holes have treelined fairways and others have that links-style look, even on the same 18-hole layout. I was surprised and somewhat pleased that there wasn’t an over-abundance of water that one may typically see on many Florida courses. I sense you’ll experience more of a Midwestern or Carolina Sandhills-type feel when you tee it up at Innisbrook.

Innisbrook Resort is really a golfer’s paradise that caters to the vacation desires of the family, individual or group looking to get away to enjoy the first-class amenities of one of the country’s top resorts. TSG

Enjoy Tableside Tomahawk, Gold-Wrapped Wagyu, And Craft Cocktails At Conshohocken’s New Sky Bar

After an afternoon of golf, nothing says recovery like a casual lunch or dinner with your group. In Conshohocken, the latest addition to the downtown fine dining scene is Hook and Ladder Sky Bar & Kitchen, part of Hotel West & Main by Hilton.

Located inside the restored Washie Firehouse, a local landmark built in 1877, Hook and Ladder offers a dining experience like no other in the area. Come dressed to impress or in casual golf attire, but most importantly - come hungry.

As you enter the hotel lobby, you are greeted with an intimate bar and lounge - 1874 Social. Sit back in the soft, brown leather stools and enjoy an espresso or cocktail, before heading upstairs to the sky bar and kitchen.

Upstairs, greenery hangs from the ceiling and just behind the bar lies the actual sky bar, overlooking the patio of the SORA West plaza. High tabletops fill the first dining room, with sofa booths and cushioned chairs in the former fireman’s quarters.

The server greets your table with a request of still or sparkling water to start you off, followed by introducing an extensive wine list and craft cocktail menu. The true, polished dining experience comes from a lesson about the food menu, designed by Chef Zack Wannawong. Originally from Thailand, Chef Zack has brought his mastery to Hook and Ladder through

distinctive steak, seafood, sushi, and southern dishes which include regionally sourced ingredients.

The server walks you through the entire menu not only informing you about the dishes being served, but the best way to pair items for your meal, adding to an even more delicious dining experience.

DINING
Second level dining room, formerly used as the fireman’s quarters.

The wagyu beef carpaccio is a musttry appetizer offered during both dinner and brunch. Drizzled with a lemon soy vinaigrette and topped with capers and served with garlic chips, the thin slices of American wagyu is a french balance of tart and savory. Also worth a try is the meaty crab cake starter is plated with an endive salad and a spoon of lemon aioli.

Also a popular starter is the brine and roasted bone marrow with uni. This dish includes bone marrow, potato crumbs, pickled red onions, sea urchin, caviar and herbed baguettes.

For dinner, the variety of steaks is plenty and according to the server “the best meat I’ve worked with in my 30 years of hospitality experience.” If you’re looking for a truly unique experience, try the $210 Dryaged tomahawk ribeye, served and sliced tableside on a cart. At $99, the Fireman Burger comes with a wagyu patted wrapped in gold, with a butter-poached lobster tail. At $54, the 8oz filet mignon may be small in size, but slices like butter and is perfectly flavorful without any sauce. Though if you are interested you have three choices: bearnaise, bordelaise and au poivre vert.

A signature dish that will have you coming back for more is the braised beef rib, which is braised for six hours and served with roasted carrots and the creamiest truffled mashed potatoes. Also available are sushi, madai snapper, king salmon and oysters available in the half or full dozen.

To go along with your dinner, take a seat in the Hook and Ladder draft room, where you can taste lagers, ales, IPAs and sours made by nearby breweries and more.

Even with a packed dining room on a Friday night, the atmosphere remains as cozy as it does empty. The tables are spaced out, creating an environment that’s not loud, nor crowded. Depending on the night you may even encounter live jazz which adds to the classy and homey feel.

Saturday brunch offers a laidback and equally unique dining experience. As the morning sun hits the glass windows behind the sky bar, it feels like you’re on an outdoor patio. Hand-crafted cocktails and coffee beverages are available for brunch - golfers might

consider a ‘John Daly Sake.’

Steak and eggs, eggs benedict and monte cristo-styled french toast are must-try brunch dishes garnished with fresh flowers, and are as beautiful as they are delicious.

With a menu this complex, it’s worth stepping out of your comfort zone and trying flavors you otherwise might not attempt. The ambience is perfect for groups large or small, and the downtown Conshohken location is ideal for an afternoon lunch or a night out. TSG

All Golf, All The Time Rinas Selling Access To The Game

As He Adds A Second Skramble House Of Golf In King Of Prussia

Everywhere you turn in the world of golf, you can’t help but hear about growing the game.

Justin Rinas has always had some very specific ideas about how to make that happen. After more than a decade as a club pro, Rinas, a Class A PGA professional, set out on a new path. His goal was pretty simple. He wanted to help make you a better player.

Just about every new club or device on the market promises to make that happen. Golf magazines are filled with tips from expert teachers that are guaranteed to lower your handicap. Makes sense. If people become better golfers, they are more likely to stick with a game that you can play in your 70s and 80s and beyond.

To Rinas, the key to growing the game is access. As a club pro at a private facility, Rinas saw how limited the access was to practice facilities and lessons. Even the members at those clubs had to schedule lessons around a club pro’s busy schedule.

And how about a place to practice at when you’re, say, on your way to work at 6 in the morning. Forget about it. And don’t get the public-course golfer started when it comes to finding a place to practice. And winter was the time of year the golf course was shut down in the Philadelphia region, so you had to shut down your golf game as well.

It’s been about two-and-a-half years since the vision of the 35-year-old Rinas, a native of the golf-rich Rochester, N.Y. area, took shape at the Skramble House of Golf in Horsham.

The place would be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And it’s a whole lot more than an indoor practice facility. It’s a golf club and Rinas, the owner and director of operations, sells memberships and part of the membership fee includes lessons.

There are simulators and miniature golf. And make no mistake about it, this is all about golf. It’s not a restaurant or a bar.

On a day in late February, Rinas is sitting inside his second location, the Skramble House of Golf in the Valley Forge Marketplace Shopping Center in West Norriton, just above King of Prussia. It opened in early January. It’s bigger, 21,000 square feet as opposed to the 8,000 square feet in Horsham, and newer than the Horsham location with 12 simulators to the five he has in Horsham.

But the goal, just as it has always been in Horsham, is the same. Give people who want to play the game access to the tools that can make them better players, that can help them break 100, break 90, break 80, maybe even break 70.

“It’s all about golf and doing everything we can to give access to our members that they can’t find anywhere else,” Rinas said. “And we have everybody coming in here, kids, women, seniors. Our youngest member is 4 and our oldest is 88.”

The Skramble House of Golf also boasts plenty of space to work on your short game and nothing lowers your scores more than improving that area of your game.

“We even have a bunker,” Rinas said. Golf has always had the reputation, fairly or unfairly, of being a little stuffy. At the Skramble House of Golf, though, it’s OK to wear a T-shirt or a sweatshirt or workout attire or even a hoodie.

Put it all together and Rinas got the response from a lot of the underserved members of the golf community, both at Horsham and now in King of Prussia, that he always thought he would. And Rinas has the energy to make it work.

“We have 210 members in Horsham and we already have 270 members here,” Rinas said. “We’re going to cap it at 320 here. The No. 1 thing is we’re always open. We have more people in here from 2 to 6 a.m. than we do from 7 to 11.”

The Philadelphia Section PGA recognized that Rinas might be on to

something when it honored him with the Section’s Player Development Award in 2021.

A big part of that award-winning approach is Rinas’ insistence that his members treat the Skramble House of Golf like it is a home.

“I know all my members and when they came in I want them to say hi and when they leave I want them to say bye, hi and bye, just like they would if they were coming into my house,” Rinas said.

You can even leave your golf bag there.

“We have 74 bags stored here right now,” Rinas said. “People just like to leave their bags here.”

The Skramble House of Golf is a place that hosts events as well. You can bring a gang, whether it’s a birthday party or a business meeting, get it catered and you’ve got a party. And how often do you get to go to a party that includes a miniature golf course?

Ultimately, though, it’s about the golf. The simulator was something of a novelty a decade or so ago. But as the technology has evolved, the popularity of simulators has grown. Rinas knew that was coming and that the average clubhouse just didn’t

Justin Rinas gives a member instruction Host your event at Skramble House

have room to accommodate a whole bunch of simulators, like, say the 12 that the Skramble House of Golf in King of Prussia has.

Rinas had 50 guys coming in to the Skramble House of Golf for a Monday Night league. There’s a women’s league, an invitational event, a Stableford event, a junior tour for the youngsters. All on simulators.

Obviously, winter, when the weather in this part of the world keeps many golfers off the golf course, is prime time for simulators. But they increasingly have become useful all year around, especially for that golfer who wants to work on his or her game at odd hours.

Rinas knows that junior golfers represent the future of the game. When he scheduled a junior clinic eight weeks ago, 100 kids signed up. The largest group among them were youngsters ages 4 to 7. He has a competitive league for players from 13 to 18. Some of the best players in District One and the Philadelphia Catholic League have spent time working on their

games at the Skramble House of Golf.

Rinas’ timing for his Skramble House of Golf concept couldn’t have been better. The arrival of the coronavirus pandemic in the spring of 2020 created a golf boom as new players became interested and the game welcomed back some golfers who decided to shake the dust from their sticks.

Rinas acknowledges golf’s COVID boom contributed to some his early success in Horsham. But he still sees the Skramble House of Golf as a need in the golf community that his approach is filling.

“When we opened in Horsham, it was

like 60 percent private-course golfers,” Rinas said. “But now it’s about 50 percent public and private at both places.”

The Skramble House of Golf doesn’t work without the dedication and work ethic of a guy like Rinas. But it’s easy when you keep the main goal in focus at all times.

“The only thing we’re trying to do is to make you a better golfer,” Rinas said. “And I know we’re doing that.” TSG

Gaylord Golf Mecca is your paradise away from home to do just that. Let’s not forget to mention the establishments along the Craft Beer & Tap Trail and this becomes a lot of fun after your round on one of 17 area golf courses you decide to play. Gaylord is worthy of “bucket list” status and is a first class facility. With first class accommodations at one of the 21 lodging facilities to choose from with world class resorts and championship golf designed by some of America’s top golf course designers, Gaylord will become a go-back-to location for many years to come.

Golfers who can’t get enough of playing–you have 297 holes to play here and I played seven courses and 90 holes while there and they didn’t disappoint, especially the first one that’s a must play while there.

Threetops at Treetops: This is known as America’s best par-3 course anywhere and a great start to your trip especially arriving in the afternoon and wanting to get in a nine and dine. This is the first of three Rick Smith (former swing coach to Phil Mickelson and many other PGA Tour Pros) designed courses. You may remember if your an avid

golf tv watcher Threetops was the venue back in 2001 for the ESPN Par-3 shootout that hosted Fuzzy Zoeller, Raymond Floyd, Fred Couples and the shot heard around the world by Lee Trevino when with one swing of the club on hole #7 and where a plaque is on that tee box today, that you can play from, had a hole-in-one and won him a whopping 1,090,000 from that one swing of which he generously donated half of that to St. Judes Children’s Hospital. What you can expect here is a really good par-3 course with elevated tee boxes and jaw dropping drops that can have you clubbing down from the carry. After a good fun start to getting nine in, head to Treetops sports bar and kick back and then get ready for staying at the Lodge at Treetops Resort.

The Natural at Beaver Creek: This is a golf course that hosts more rounds than any other course on your Gaylord Golf Mecca trip from low green fees and encourages local play. The “Natural” is a scenic course that is right in front of you and simple as the name. It’s a course with rolling terrain that has tee boxes for any level of golfer and while playing you can see some wildlife that you will catch out of the corner of your eye, from deer, wild turkey, beaver, heron and other waterfowl. Located on the west side

of Otsego Lake this course is one of the most scenic sites you’ll play in northern Michigan.

Masterpiece Course at Treetops: Designed by the great Robert Trent Jones this 18-hole “Masterpiece” Par-71 course is all you can handle from 7,060 yards of golf from the back tees. Open in 1987 that golf digest named it the #2 resort course in the United States that you will find the most challenging and difficult of all the Gaylord Golf Mecca courses. Fountains Course at Garland Resort: This is a course I highly recommend on your trip. This is the newest of their courses that opened in 1995 and had a redesign in 2010. The unique thing about this golf course is, it offers a 6-6-6 design, six par 3’s, six par 5’s and 6 par 4’s with great golf course conditions. Located in Lewiston only a 30 minute drive from Gaylord, Garland Resort and Lodge offers 4 championship golf courses, all from one pro shop, and no driving from course to course. This also has

This course can accommodate any level of golfer with four to six tee box levels and great elevation changes.

Keep Your Drink Cold With A SIC Cup!

SIC Cups is an insulated, stainless steel drinkware brand based out of Jacksonville, FL. SIC broke into the golf industry a few years back when they created the Dimpled Golf® drinkware line. The gloss white, dimpled exterior of the tumblers, bottles, and other reusable drinkware products was designed to mimic the exterior of a golf ball. SIC Custom Shop offers the ability to customize our drinkware products in-house. The combination of a golf exclusive design, superior insulation technology and the option of customization, is ideal for country clubs, golf resorts, private clubs, golf tournaments, and so much more. New to SIC Cups in 2023 is the Personalized Drinkware Program which offers the ability to personalize SIC products with your logo AND individual names.

In addition to the exclusivity and novelty of the SIC Dimpled Golf® line is the sustainability aspect and the impact that reusable drinkware products such as SIC Cups is making on the environment. Millions of disposable, plastic water bottles are purchased, used, and disposed of on golf courses alone every single year. In recent attempts to become more environmentally friendly, we have seen golf courses make the switch from disposable plastics and styrofoam products, to reusable drinkware alternatives. SIC Cups has helped many customers save thousands of dollars on disposable drinkware AND help reduce the amount of waste on their golf course.

Feel free to reach out to the SIC Custom Shop at custom@siccups.com or SIC Customer Service at getsic@siccups.com for more information on custom or wholesale orders. GET SIC and GO GREEN!

Cherry Hills Set to Host the 123rd U.S. Amateur Championship in August

Iconic Club Will Host America’s Top Men’s Amateur Golfers Competing For The USGA’s Oldest Championship.

Cherry Hills, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary as a club this summer, previously hosted the USGA’s oldest national championship in 1990 and 2012. Future sixtime major winner Phil Mickelson brought home the U.S. Amateur title in 1990. The 2012 championship at Cherry Hills is now remembered for welcoming one of the deepest fields of future professional stars in the history of the event. Tennessee’s Steven Fox, who had to survive a 17-man playoff for 14 spots in stroke play to qualify for match play in the event, defeated Michael Weaver in an epic 37-hole final match. History, though, will point to the deep collection of future golfing superstars who each of the finalists had to outlast to vie for the championship.

Future PGA Tour winners and major champions in the 2012 U.S. Amateur field included Justin Thomas (15 PGA Tour wins, two majors), Jordan Spieth (13 PGA Tour wins, three majors), and Bryson DeChambeau (eight PGA Tour wins, one major). Other eventual PGA Tour winners include Hideki Matsuyama, Xander Schauffele, Max Homa, Daniel Berger, Taylor Gooch, Mackenzie Hughes, Trey Mullinax, Sepp Straka, and Aaron Wise. Together, this group has compiled 68 PGA Tour wins and seven major championships, making the case of arguably the greatest field for a U.S. Amateur in modern times.

Since the inaugural event in 1895, the U.S. Amateur has enjoyed an illustrious history of legendary champions, including Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, and Tiger Woods. In 1930, Jones completed his epic Grand Slam by winning the U.S. Amateur at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. Woods, in 1996, became the first golfer to win three consecutive U.S. Amateur titles.

When the best amateurs in the world arrive at Cherry Hills this year, they will see a noticeably different golf course than the one they competed on a decade earlier. In 2007, celebrated golf course architect Tom Doak and his Renaissance Golf Design firm

were commissioned to begin a long-term restoration plan that was partially completed for the 2012 championship but continued for another decade under associate Eric Iverson until completion last year.

The biggest change players will encounter will be with the restoration of Little Dry Creek throughout the golf course. To restore Flynn’s original design, Little Dry Creek was rerouted closer to the front of the green on the 14th hole, next to the green on the seventh, and continuing to flow tightly alongside the newly re-designed eighth hole. Little Dry Creek was also moved more into play on the 15th hole, where the recent rediscovery and restoration of Flynn’s original left side of the green helped create a more thought-provoking approach. The creek now runs closer to the 15th green, down the 16th fairway and alongside the green, further highlighting the genius and creativity of Flynn’s original design and fortifying the challenge for the best amateurs in the world.

The starting field of 312 players for the U.S. Amateur Championship will play 18 holes of stroke play on Aug. 14 and 15, with one round at Cherry Hills and one at Colorado Golf Club, the stroke-play co-host

for the championship, after which the field will be cut to the low 64 scores. Six rounds of match play begin on Wednesday, Aug. 16. The championship concludes with a 36-hole championship match on Sunday, Aug. 20. The winner and runner-up are exempt into the following year’s U.S. Open and The Masters.

Just as vital to Cherry Hills as hosting national golf championships on a regular basis, is a dedication and passion to give back to the game and create turningpoint opportunities for youth in the local community. Proceeds from the Championship will be donated to charities across Colorado including the Palmer Scholarship, the Western Golf Association’s Evans Scholars Foundation and The First Tee with the goal of growing the game of golf, assisting with scholarships, and impacting the lives of young people across the Centennial State.

“We’re obviously proud to present unparalleled championship golf to the world-class participants and the spectators of the U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills, but the charitable impact in the community made possible through this championship is a legacy that means everything to the club,” says Koehn.

Bonfit Present Play Nine, The Card Game of Golf

Bonfit America Inc., an incubator, manufacturer, and distributor of unique products, is proud to present a card game that is founded on the principles of golf but a game that anyone can play and enjoy – Play Nine.

“Play Nine is a great game for a casual game night or family get together. It is quick, easy to play and FUN,” said Bonfit President Paul Krok. “We’re experiencing a great deal of success with Play Nine in the large communities, particularly those associated with golf courses. During the pandemic, crowds from the Villages in Florida enjoyed Play Nine daily. It is very popular in these large venues; they can also create ladders and brackets to expand the game for weeks.”

PLAY NINE QUICK LESSON – GO LOW

· Set the Course: Deal eight cards to each player. Arrange the cards into two rows of four cards. Each player flips two cards face up to start the game.

· Advancing Down the Fairway: Play continues in order with all players drawing, then turning over or replacing a card as they shoot for the lowest score.

· Shaving off Strokes: Players draw, decide, and discard working to match vertical pairs of cards. When matching a pair, the card cancels out equaling zero points.

· Winning the Hole: As players go about their turn flipping and discarding cards, strokes will reduce, and one player will be met with the question of flipping their last card up. Players have the choice to skip their turn after drawing a card and immediately discarding it in hopes of reducing their strokes in the next turn. When a player decides to flip their last card, each other person has one final turn before the Hole ends. Play nine holes and the player with the lowest strokes wins the game.

“How I like to explain Play Nine. Each turn is a shot, and each hand is a hole. The game can be played in ten minutes but what is surprising is how strategic gameplay have people playing the game for hours,” added Krok.

Play Nine is available at fine golf specialty stores including PGA TOUR Superstore, and Golf Galaxy as well as at Dick’s Sporting Goods, Amazon, and Walmart. It retails for $18.99 USD and includes 108 cards, golf pencil, 150 sheet scorecard and easy to read instructions. To order online, visit www.playnine.com.
