Northern Suburbs & Nillumbik -

Out & About

With its rolling hills, plenty of parks and open space, picturesque villages and Melbourne’s friendliest people … the northern suburbs have plenty to offer families. There was a time when the land where townships and suburbs in the north were dotted with market gardens, orchards and dairy farms. Times have changed and the district is developing rapidly, but there’s still an exciting blend of both worlds; one where you have open spaces and nature to explore and another that offers culture, food, shopping and all the other amenities we love to surround us. Coopers Settlement in Bundoora Park (p.29) has a fully recreated village from the turn of the 20th century and also a petting farm that the littlies will love. Latrobe Golf Park (voucher opposite) is sure to challenge and entertain the kids and parents!

Edendale Farm - Nillumbik Council

Where do you find a real country atmosphere so close to the city? In the north!

Nearby Watermarc in Greensborough has an enormous indoor aquatic centre with some of the best waterslides in Australia. Funfields is Melbourne’s premier theme park, offering a great mix of exciting thrill rides, tobogganing, go-karting (suitable for juniors too) and a fantastic aqua park with their brand new offering, “The Kraken” - a four lane hi-speed water slide. It is a 40 min drive from the CBD on the Ring Road and has ample space & facilities for picnicking and BBQing- A great day out!

On the other side of the Plenty River lies the Shire of Nillumbik (www.visitnillumbik.com.au) which encompasses most of the area known locally as The Diamond Valley.

30

Whether you and your family enjoy walking or cycling, Nillumbik has got you covered. The Aqueduct trails joins the Research Trail to form a 10.2km trail loop around Research and Eltham North. There are playgrounds, picnic and BBQ facilities located along the trail. Or you can explore the Gawa Wurundjeri Resource Trail, which is a self guided, 340m loop walking trail. Markers explain how the Wurundjeri clan lived near the creek and used the land to obtain bush foods, medicines, implements, shelter and clothes.

The trail introduces visitors to the indigenous flora and fauna, including manna gums, Lomandra (used to weave baskets) and wombat burrows. At Edendale Community Environment Farm you can say hello to our guinea pigs and farm animals, including sheep and goats, enjoy the child-friendly spiral garden or wander through the sustainablygrown vegetable gardens and fruit orchard to get ideas on what you can do in your own garden. Out & About

- Mornington Peninsula

The Mornington Peninsula is located just over an hour’s drive away from the city, on Melbourne’s “doorstep”. It is often described as Melbourne’s summer playground. The seaside towns of Dromana, Safety Beach, McCrae, Rosebud, Rye, Sorrento and Portsea have long been a favourite holiday destination amongst Melbourne families. The bay facing beaches are some of the safest and most beautiful swimming beaches in the world. There are literally kilometres of sheltered calm waters for the family to frolic in, as well as great foreshores for building those sandcastles or a traditional game of beach cricket. From Safety Beach to Rosebud and Rye are calm waters fronting extensive strips of sand and natural foreshore reserves.

DID YOU KNOW

Mornington Peninsula

The highest peak on the peninsula is Arthurs Seat. It rises to over 300 metres and provides panoramic views from various lookouts.

38

The coastline becomes more rocky through Sorrento and Portsea offering some great coastal views plus long stretches of sandy beaches near the main piers. The Bass Strait Coast from Portsea to Cape Schanck and Flinders offers a much less commercialised environment with exhilarating wind-swept surf beaches, bushy foreshore reserves, scenic lookouts and rocky coastal formations. There is no defined commercial centre at Cape Schanck as such, with nearby Rosebud and Flinders serving the area.

A 4 kilometre drive south from the resort takes visitors to the coastal feature the town is named after - Cape Schanck. At this rocky point is the Cape Schanck lighthouse which was built in 1859 out of local limestone and features a rare spiral staircase made from stone.

However, the Cape Schanck Resort & Golf Course, with its bar and restaurant open to the public, and the surrounding housing estate, is regarded by many as the heart of the community.

Pitch a tent on a foreshore campsite, opt for budget accommodation or plump for something luxurious and while away the holidays. Photo Courtesy of Visit Victoria

Situated just inland from the beachside resorts of Dromana and Rosebud, the small community of Arthurs Seat is renowned for its many natural attractions. Arthurs Seat Rd begins at the Mornington Peninsula Freeway overpass, quickly transforming itself into a scenic and windy mountain road as it ascends to the Arthurs Seat peak.

Tours of the lighthouse, including access to the circular viewing platform near the top from which spectacular views can be enjoyed, are conducted daily. The lighthouse is surrounded by a reserve that includes a museum, former keeper’s quarters and associated buildings.

WORTH A LOOK

Mornington’s original post office, built in 1863 at the corner of Main Street and The Esplanade, now operates as a museum displaying old telecommunications equipment and items relating to local history. On the other side of Main Street is the old court house (built in 1860) and the former police station lock-up (1862).

Go lose yourself at Ashcombe Maze (see above) or Boneo Maze, go tree surfing or strawberry picking at Sunny Ridge - Make sure to try the icecream, delicious! Have a relaxing soak in the nearby Hot Springs.

With nature all around there is plenty to inspire wonder. Observe water and land creatures in their natural habitats with dolphin swims, wetlands visits and conservation area explorations. Swim, fish, snorkel and paddle in the calm waters with their expansive sandbars. To travel to the other side of the bay, a passenger and car ferry links Sorrento with the Bellarine Peninsula at Queenscliff.

The Gippsland region stretches from Melbourne’s eastern outskirts all the way to the state border with New South Wales in Victoria’s far east. This extensive and diverse geographical area is renowned for its natural beauty. Visitors will enjoy hundreds of kilometres of spectacular coastline, picturesque rivers and lakes, forests and snowfields. Families and kids in particular will love the newly refurbished Gumbuya World. In our opinion, it’s Australia’s best theme park. Reopening in Dec 2017, it boasts world class rides and experiences. The park is divided into four “worlds” – Oasis Springs, Oz Adventure, Outback Explorers and Wildlife Trail. Each has its own distinct characteristics and there’s something to suit all ages and interests. Oasis Springs Whether you’re taking the plunge on epic water slides, soaking in the rays with a drift along the 300 metre Lazy River, or getting deliriously drenched on Typhoon Island, Oasis Springs is bursting with fantastic fun. Relax in heated rock pools, catch the perfect wave at Surf ’s Up and, to add a splash of style to your day, book your own luxury cabana.

DID YOU KNOW Gumbuya World was originally a pheasant farm! It was turned into a wildlife park in 1978 and a large statue of a pheasant stood at the front gate for many years to pay homage to its past!

Oz Adventure You don’t need to get wet to go for a ride. There’s a world of fun under the gums when you spin out at Oz Adventure. And the adventure is just beginning, as we keep growing with the launch of the Woolshed (coming soon). Outback Explorers A whole world of adventure for smaller thrill – seekers! Packed with pirate ships, giant berries and big-rig trucks, here all the action is just the right size. Wildlife Trail Feathered, furry or fanged, there are more than 50 species of amazing animals waiting to meet you on the Wildife Trail. Catch a free Ranger talk to learn more about these incredible creatures and, for a truly unforgettable experience, book an Animal Close Encounters to get up close and personal with koalas, dingos, pythons and more.

Bendigo’s past centres around gold. It was discovered here in the 1850s and was responsible for a large influx of migrants from around the world. Around nine billion dollars of gold was found in Bendigo - more gold was found here between 1850 and 1900 than anywhere else in the world! But....there was very little surface gold, it was contained in rich quartz reefs stretching all over the city.

- Echuca/Moama

The heyday of paddle steamers and river trade has left a historic legacy on Echuca and much of its tourism is built upon this today. Photo Courtesy of Visit Victoria

The original red gum wharf was constructed in stages from 1865 as a three-level structure to allow for the rise and fall of the river, ultimately reaching a length of 1200 metres. Only a small section of the wharf remains today, preserved as part of the recreated Port Of Echuca tourist attraction, and serving as a great viewing deck of the Murray River and surrounding bush.

Visit the Discovery Centre which includes access to the port that you can explore at your leisure. But if you want an animated and interesting dose of history and detail you can’t go past the port tour. Be led by a tour guide in period costume and hear tales of the Murry River paddles steamers.

The port area has undergone some significant renovation and restoration in the last few years and now boasts an interpretative centre.

The Discovery Centre is a modern museum. Displays of the area’s historical abound. There are glass cases, floor and wall mounted displays and videos. But don’t pass by without opening the drawers beneath the glass cabinets. There are more displays in each drawer. Some of the drawers contain letters written more than a century ago.

Melbourne is sports mad and is proud to wear the unofficial “Sports Capital of the World” title. If it can be thrown, hit, kicked or caught or it can be sailed, surfed or driven, then we WILL turn up to watch it and support it. Most cities in the world have 1 maybe 2, 3 or 4 professional sporting teams but Melbourne has 24! We love to turn up in our thousands to our great sporting venues like the “G”, Melbourne Park, Marvel stadium or AAMI Park to watch our local and international teams in world class competition on almost a weekly basis.

February 14 kicks off the Rebels home season who are hunting their first Super Rugby title. March 15 is the Australian Formula One Grand Prix at Albert Park closely followed by the Storm’s quest for redemption on 28 March, their first home game for the season.

This year the Aussies host New Zealand at the “G” in the Boxing Day Test. January 20 sees the start of the Australian Open tennis. Carlton and Richmond then bounce the ball on March 19 to begin the season 2020 AFL style. We’ve put together the ultimate guie of what’s on, who’s who, and when it’s happening. Check out our fixtures on the following pages for all the sports, read about the stars, sign up for a membership. So kick back and relax OR stand up and cheer It’s all here!
