Important stuff and other stuff

New Zealand is one of the first places in the world to see the new day, 12 hours ahead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). In Summer, New Zealand uses ‘Daylight Saving’ with clocks put forward one hour to GMT + 13. Daylight saving begins on the last Sunday in September and ends on the first Sunday of the following April, when clocks are put back to GMT + 12. 2019 - 20 Daylight savings: Daylight saving begins 29th September 2019 Ends on 5th April 2020

Weather

New Zealand has a temperate climate with moderately high rainfall and many hours of sunshine. While the far north has subtropical weather during summer, and inland alpine areas of the South Island can be as cold as - 10°C (14°F) in winter, most of the country lies close to the coast, which means mild temperatures. The average New Zealand temperature decreases as you travel south. January and Febuary are the warmest months, and July is the coldest month of the year. In summer, the average maximum temperature ranges between 20 - 30°C (70-90°F) and in winter between 10 -15°C (50-60°F).

Out & About

Auckland is dynamic, different, diverse and constantly evolving as one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities. It is New Zealand’s largest city with a population of 1.6 million people and is also the largest Polynesian city in the world (even though it’s not in Polynesia!!). Auckland is one of the few cities in the world to have harbours on two separate major bodies of water. The central part of the urban area of Auckland covers a narrow isthmus between the Manukau Harbour on the Tasman Sea, and the Waitemata Harbour on the Pacific Ocean. In just half an hour you can be almost anywhere: sailing to an island, trekking through the rainforest, picnicking on a volcano, sampling wines at a vineyard or wandering a wild, black sand surf beach.

The commuter ferry terminal, trains for travel to the south and west from nearby Britomart and the extensive bus networks all radiate out of this precinct.

Auckland -

Nearby is Viaduct Harbour. Built for the hosting of the America’s Cup, this area is now home to museums, bars, restaurants, walking and cycling paths, plenty of maritime history (including a giant yacht suspended above the entranceway) as well as kid’s playground and accommodation.

Its unique geographic position means you can enjoy the benefits of a large city with a wide variety of cafés, restaurants and bars, excellent theatres, galleries and museums and shopping and still be close to stunning natural landscapes, beautiful beaches and nature walks. Auckland is centred around its waterfront, that is also the main transport hub.

HANDY HINT If you’re feeling energetic, do the Coast to Coast Walkway - a unique walk joining the east and west coasts of Auckland and taking in many of the city’s scenic icons. Enquire at the Visitor Information Centre in the city for a brochure on the walkway.

ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY!

A short bus ride away is the popular family area of Mission Bay. Here, The Promenade, is one of Auckland’s original beachside hangouts, and these days has cafes, restaurants, fish and chip shops, ice cream parlours, FREE wifi in the area, an iconic fountain and new kids playground.

Photo courtesy of Tourism New Zealand

Take a dip in the sea, hire a kayak, try stand-up paddle boarding, or just relax with a family picnic and throw a Frisbee around. Head to St Heliers boat ramp for a guided sea kayaking tour of Auckland’s harbour and nearby islands. The tours run every day and you can choose between a half-day, full-day or sunset experience.

WORTH A LOOK!

Waiheke is a haven of beautiful vineyards, olive groves and beaches, all just a 40-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland. In landscape, lifestyle and experience, Waiheke is a world away. The white sandy beaches at Oneroa, Palm Beach and Onetangi slope gently down into the Hauraki Gulf and are perfect for swimming, kayaking, or having a picnic. If you’re a walker, explore the island’s trails which meander along cliff tops, down to the beaches and into cool enclaves of native forest. At the eastern end of the island the Stony Batter walkway leads you to a system of World War II gun emplacements and underground tunnels. Ferries to and from Devonport depart every half hour. Mount Eden, Mount Hobson and Mount St John are dormant volcanic cones offering commanding views of the city - pack a picnic and walk up.

The easiest thing to look out for if you ever get lost in the CBD, is the Sky Tower. At 328 metres tall, it is hard to miss. The views are spectacular. Take the ferry from Downtown Auckland across to the seaside suburb of Devonport and enjoy a light cafe lunch and a spot of shopping. Alternatively, walk to the summits of Mount Victoria or North Head for 360° views.

Auckland’s landscape is dotted with 48 extinct volcanoes. Rangitoto is the stand out with its distinctive symmetrical cone and super location just off the coast. It stands guard over Auckland and the views are spectacular! After a short ferry ride, you can take a guided tour on the 4WD road train or you can walk the 2 hour round trip to the summit. Awesome fun!

Out & About

- North Auckland

Firstly, visit the historic seaside village of Devonport. Exploring the underground tunnels, gun emplacements and fortifications at North Head is a must. The volcanic cone offers incredible 360-degree views over the Hauraki Gulf and across to the city – you can even take a segway tour to the top. Take a wander through the local art galleries and see how the surrounding landscapes have inspired beautiful paintings and photographs (great if you’re looking for something special to take home). Browse boutique shops for unique, quality clothing and jewellery, then relax at one of Devonport’s casual-cool cafés and restaurants. Pop into the chocolaterie for handmade chocolates and truffles. There’s also a beautifully restored Victorian cinema if you fancy a flick.

North Auckland

And when it comes to beaches, gorgeous Cheltenham Beach is a winner. Slip off your shoes and take a stroll or a dip – the sheltered waters are perfect for families.

A short ferry ride or a quick trip over the Auckland Harbour Bridge puts you on the north shore. The north of Auckland is a mix of old townships and new developments.

Takapuna is the unofficial ‘capital’ of Auckland’s North Shore. Choose from a huge range of cafés and restaurants day or night, or go Kiwi with fresh fish and chips on the beach. If you’d rather somewhere more secluded, find a quiet spot on the shores of Lake Pupuke for a picnic – it’s just a few minutes’ walk away. The lake is actually a volcanic crater and a favourite spot for rowing, sailing and canoeing. If you’re there on a Sunday, visit the lively market to find anything from fresh fruit and vegetables to crafts, furniture and antiques.

Make sure you check out Takapuna’s whitesand beach for family-friendly swimming and an awesome playground (more picnic spots here too). Afterwards, stretch your legs on the heritage trail from Takapuna to Milford along the water’s edge.

North Auckland A little further along is Silverdale, with its historic museum, adventure park and the cool Snowplanet (see p.20) with its indoor ski resort, where you can actually ski all year round!! It has slopes and terrain for experienced skiers and beginners as well as tobogganing, snowboarding, tubing and an Austrian styled restaurant/lodge. All snow gear and equipment can be hired on site – A one-of-a-kind experience!!

In Birkenhead, there are sea views from every street so climb high and reap the rewards. Sitting 360 feet above sea level, these views stretch across the Waitemata Harbour and all the way to Rangitoto Island. Closer to the water, explore the grounds around the Chelsea Sugar Refinery, part of Auckland’s Victorian history (built in 1884, it once employed nearly all of the village’s population in Devonport, Birkenhead and Takapuna). If you head east from Silverdale instead of continuing north, you’ll find Whangaporoa, a picture-perfect slice of land, ringed by sheltered sandy beaches. Which means plenty of water activities – swimming, fishing, kayaking, boating, stand up paddle boarding; you name it.

When James Cook arrived in 1769, he anchored off a great bay ‘full of plantations and villages’ that was, he noted ‘a bay of plenty’ The Bay of Plenty, is no less plentiful today. Around Tauranga are hectares of orchards and gardens producing everything from kiwifruit and citrus fruit to avocados.

In the gorge you can fish for trout, take walks through old mining tunnels and relics, or cycle the Hauraki Rail Trail.

Waihi

Or for a slower journey, take a ride on the Goldfields Railway (see above) from Waihi to Waikato through the historic gold country. Just 10kms away is Waihi Beach, with its 9kms of sweeping white sand. It is one of NZ’s safest and most beautiful surf beaches.

34

Your children will love exploring Waihi Beach and jumping amongst the waves as they crash into shore. Or take a 10 minute drive south to Anzac Bay at Bowentown where the water is shallow and calm at low tide. This family-friendly destination has plenty of parks, playgrounds and cafes for you all to enjoy. Katikati is known as mural town. It is a small settlement unlike any other. It gets its name from the 47 murals and sculptures that you can see along the main street, turning this quiet little town into a permanent open air art gallery! If you’re a keen gardener, don’t miss the tranquil Katikati Bird Gardens. Admire camellias, magnolias, azaleas, lilies and more grow as you walk around this sprawling property and see many species of native birds wandering free or living in aviaries.

Head south along the coast to the cultural hub of Whakatane and the quintessential beach town, Ohope.

EXPLORE NZ’s MOST ACTIVE VOLCANO

WHAKAARI / WHITE ISLAND

The main centre for the eastern Bay of Plenty, Whakatane is one of the sunniest towns in New Zealand. Whakatane is well known for its great weather, excellent fishing and friendly locals. Some attractions include the museum, an observatory and Maori historical sites. The Nga Tapuwae o Toi walkway leads to pa sites, native forest and seabird colonies. Dolphin and Seal tours, which can include swimming encounters, start in November. There are guided Kayak tours on offer around Ohiwa Harbour and Whale Island.

DID YOU KNOW A surprising sight on White Island is the remains of a sulphur mining operation. Mining came to a sudden halt in September 1914, when a mudslide killed all the workers. They disappeared without trace; only the camp cat (named Peter the Great) survived.

Out & About

DID YOU KNOW More yellow fin tuna are caught in Whakatane than anywhere else in the country! The volcanic activity is generally limited to steaming fumaroles and boiling mud, and can be visited with a guided tour via helicopter or launch, depending on the status of the current volcanic situation.

Photo courtesy of Tourism New Zealand

Whakatane is also the jumping off point for the spectacular White Island! This always active volcano is 49km off the shores of Whakatane, but is well worth the visit. In fact we think it is one of the world’s great adventures!

The Maori name for the island is ‘Te Puia o Whakaari’, which means ‘the dramatic volcano’. It’s wild!

White Island is a perfect example of an active volcano. It breathes, roars and hisses from steaming vents that release 800C gases, it has had around 35 small to moderate eruptions since 1826.

Whakatane is also very close to Ohope, a 10km white sandy beach, which has a small settlement and is perfect for camping, surfing, walking and relaxing in the sun. Golden sand stretches in both directions from the Ohiwa Harbour entrance down to Ohopes’ famous West End beach. This 11km coastline is one of the best-loved beaches in the country and is a safe swimming spot. The seafloor drops away gently so the surf doesn’t break too hard. It’s the perfect beach for your little ones to play in the rolling waves.

Rotorua -

Out & About

Rotorua (or Rotovegas) as it is sometimes referred to, is located about three hours drive from Auckland. It nestles around the shores of Lake Rotorua, which was created from the crater of a large volcano. It attracts visitors from all over the world, who are drawn to the sulphuric delights of the city’s geothermal activity. Geysers and mud pools form the foundations of tourism here, thanks to the Caldera (dormant volcano) upon which Rotorua sits. It is New Zealand’s favourite family playground and draws millions of visitors from around the world every year. Rotorua is a small city, compact, safe and easily accessible; with most attractions within walking distance or a short drive. The smell of sulphur in the air is the first sign that you’ve arrived in Rotorua. The second is the wisps of steam that you notice escaping out of vents, grates and holes in the ground virtually everywhere. Don’t worry – you soon get used to the smell!!!

Creating ease in journeys! • Tailor-made family suites & facilities • Bike wash and storage • Swimming pool and spa • Indoor and outdoor play areas • Discounts to local attractions • Boutique restaurant 0800 538 466 JETPARK.CO.NZ

The reason for all the steam and smell is because Rotorua is a part of the Taupo Volcanic Zone. The Volcanic Zone, a geothermal field that extends from White Island through to Mt Ruapehu on the south side of Taupo, provides erupting geysers, bubbling mud pools and naturally heated mineral waters that are said to have great healing properties. Spa baths are everywhere and the Polynesian Spa and Blue Baths have family heated pools. Families love Polynesian Spa for the convenience and superb setting. Easily accessed in the centre of town, it is walking distance to most major accommodations. The family spa is a great way to enjoy Rotorua’s warm waters. There is a fun family pool too with a large freshwater chlorinated heated pool with a slide and two mineral pools that overlook the main pool – mum can even duck out to get a spa treatment at the Lake Spa.

Just to the north of town is Mind Junction, an interactive hands on Science experience Discovery Centre. Enjoy our Tricky Golf, maybe you prefer to take the controls of our Flight Simulator, plus five other activities. Open rain or shine and suitable for all ages. Nearby, Huka Honey Hive is a great place to stop on the way back to town for a delicious manuka honey ice cream, free honey tastings (and mead tastings for the adults!) and a look at the live beehives where you can see the bees going about their honey-making business behind a glass panel. Located in the same precinct is Huka Prawn Park. 30 years ago two clever kiwi blokes had an idea, they found the perfect location and rolled with it creating “Huka Prawn Park”!

It is New Zealand’s only Prawn Park and the only geothermally heated prawn farm in the world. It started in a five hundred dollar army tent and has grown into a prawn empire! Now a Riverside Restaurant that seats 250 people and a tourism fun park that has hundreds of visitors daily during peak periods. A unique fun kiwi experience, pack a picnic and a towel and spend the day creating exciting family memories that will have your kids wanting to come back for more.

The best place to start your prawn journey is on the behind the scenes tour through the mystical aquarium, nursery and hatchery, at the end of the tour a skilled angler will demonstrate how to fish for the sneaky critters so you get the best chance. . You will enjoy watching the excitement on your child’s face as you head on the adventure trail trying out all the interactive activities.

Feed the trout, battle the family on the water cannons, (only the brave folk tackle the water gauntlets), find Shawn the Prawn on the nature’s treasure hunt, play at the kids playground and wind down in the geothermal footbaths or what you could call the toddlers swimming hole. Make sure you bring a towel. The newest addition to the park is the new boating lake and its epic, offering stand-up paddle boarding, water trikes and pedal boats. Of course, the main attraction is prawn fishing! I don’t know about you but there is something so kiwi and satisfying about fishing with your children. All rods and bait are supplied.

DID YOU KNOW Yes, there are cooking facilities in the park to cook prawns or you can take them away on ice! #mmmprawns

The historic Tokaanu Wharf reaches out into the lake and is a particularly picturesque spot for an afternoon of fishing, picnicking, birdwatching or swimming. Its natural thermal springs and mud pools have been used for centuries by Maori for therapeutic bathing, cooking and bleaching harakeke (flax) for weaving. Today, you can explore Tokaanu Thermal Pools, a public hot pools complex for adults and children, or enjoy the Tokaanu Thermal Walk, a 20-minute bush walk past natural hot pools in sinter basins and spluttering mud pools. Forty minutes from Turangi is the Tongariro National Park, famous for the two ski fields: Whakapapa and Turoa on Mount Ruapehu, which combined, make New Zealand’s largest ski area. The nominal capital of the district is National Park Village. It has the distinction of being the highest urban settlement in the North Island. It is an accommodation hub and starting place for all sorts of adventures in the district: skiing and snowboarding, of course, but also tramping, mountain biking, rafting, canyoning, angling and just about anything else mountain, lake or river-related you care to mention.

Nearby is Whakapapa Village which is located at the base of the access road to Whakapapa Ski Field on the western side of Mount Ruapehu, an active volcano. The settlement is dominated by the elegant Chateau Tongariro, a large heritage hotel that was built in 1929. Ride the Sky Waka gondola, New Zealand’s most advanced gondola, high above the UNESCO dual World Heritage Tongariro National Park. Journey over waterfalls and ancient lava flows and take in the majestic scenery of Mt Ruapehu and its neighbouring volcanoes, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. There is a café at the top and even though primarily its purpose is to transport skiers to the top of the mountain, it makes a great year round sightseeing experience.

- Wellington

Wellington is New Zealand’s capital city and is in fact....... the most remote capital in the world. Situated on Wellington Harbour, which lies on the unpredictable and at times wild Cook Strait, Wellington possesses the nickname “Windy Welly” and boy is it well named. It has what are considered to be gale force winds for half of the year!! The city is compact and interesting, and is often compared with San Francisco due to its sloping hills and streets..

Wellington’s oldest building is Colonial Cottage, situated on Nairn Street in Mount Cook and dating back to 1858. Wellington’s intense urban experience is unrivalled in the country. Shops, museums, restaurants, parks, galleries, harbours, even beaches – the picturesque waterfront area, in particular, is a hot-spot for those who like everything in one place. The area is also home to the National Museum of New Zealand, the Te Papa Tongarewa, which also hosts the national gallery. The Museum is an entertaining way to find out about New Zealand, and is arguably one of the best interactive museums in the world. Kids will love the interactive exhibitions, the 3D Colossal Squid and uncovering dinosaur bones in Bush City. Cruise down Cuba Street and visit the hipsters, artists and lovers of vintage. Cuba Street is a bohemian haven with some of the city’s most colourful shops, bars and cafes.

Start at Queens Wharf and follow the harbour around past Te Papa and Chaffers Marina, where you will find Oriental Parade bubbling with life. This is Wellington’s promenade and beach, picturesquely lined with old wooden colonial houses, cafés and Norfolk pines.

72

If you’ve any interest in seafaring history the Maritime Museum on Queen’s Wharf is worth your time. The museum houses displays and artefact’s on the maritime history of New Zealand as well as international exhibits. Pride of place is a film which pays tribute to Wellington’s inter-island ferry disaster in 1968.

Catch the historic Wellington Cable Car from Lambton Quay to the Wellington Botanic Garden for great views and photos over the city. At the top head along to Space Place at Carter Observatory which is a huge hit with families planetarium shows occur on the hour and the exhibition area is hands on. From 8pm on Saturdays and Tuesdays you can observe the Southern Skies. The tour includes a talk on astronomy and a 1/2 hour planeterium show.

DID YOU KNOW Wellington is packed with over 400 cafes and restaurants which on a per person basis rivals that of New York. Named after Sir William Hutt, one of the early colonists, the Hutt Valley lies around 15 minutes north of Wellington. What’s special about the Hutt Valley, is the unique variety of terrain over such a small area. Seaside towns, wilderness, flood plains, valleys, forests, industrial and commercial centres, and residential suburbs, all within a short hop of each other. The area has plenty of walking tracks weaving in and out of the suburbs and around the more rural locations (some of the best views of Wellington are from Hutt Valley). Attractions include the Silverstream Railway, with its vintage engines and rides on the old track, and the Dowse Art Museum which houses an array of multimedia exhibitions and is one of Wellington’s most important art complexes. One of the most popular excursions for Wellingtonians has always been across the harbour to Days Bay. It’s a gorgeous beach on a summer’s day, and Williams Park behind it offers a place for picnics, for kicking a ball around and for licking an icecream from the Pavilion Café. You can use Days Bay as a setting-off point for excursions into the wider area – the very popular Butterfly Creek walk sets off from nearby, or tackle the easy, lovely ride beyond to Pencarrow Head with its historic lighthouse and truly formidable set of stairs.

Who said: “There is no such thing as a FREE lunch?” Let us show you what there is to see and do in the nation’s capital for FREE (or maybe having to spend just a little). 1. Every parent with toddlers needs to know about the Capital E creative play space. One mum says: Capital E is great because you can get bottomless coffee and your child can’t escape and it’s totally free. It’s completely safe – your child can’t stab you with plastic craft scissors. They have kids on hand to help out little ones. The space is wheel-chair and buggy friendly.

2. Aotea Lagoon in Porirua is awesome for picnics and ice cream and train rides ($2.50). It also has a free splash pad. The park is wheelchair and buggy friendly. There’s a huge playground built to appeal to every-one from adventurous tweens and maybe even teens to little ones. 3. For the very young, there is StoryPlace, at Te Papa where kids can be entertained and informed

by Te Pa-pa’s wonderful staff at one of a number of timetabled sessions during the day (these are very popular, so bookings are essential). Outside, the beautifully landscaped Bush City includes a very lifelike reconstruction of a limestone cave, complete with cave wetas and fossilising moa bones, and there is a sandpit where kids can diligently uncover a fossilised mososaur skeleton – or just jump into the sandpit. 4. Pop into the Wellington Museum (p.69) and check out the history of Wellington. It is a few minutes walk north of Frank Kitts Park. The museum is located in the old Bond Store – the warehouse where unloaded goods were kept until all duties were paid. 5. A visit to the Southward Car Museum. When Sir Len Southward bought a Model T Ford in 1956, it

(Costs a little) 6. Have older kids? They’ll love the flying fox at Karori Park. Right in the middle of the outer green belt walking tracks, it’s fabulous to get among the beautiful nature of the park, with climbing frames, swings and a circle of rocks for the kids to run around. The playground also has exciting bike and scooter tracks around the outer boundary of the park, and a café in the nearby pavilion for your morning coffee.

WORTH A LOOK! Take in the stunning panoramic views at Mount Victoria Lookout - one of the most popular places to get your city bearings and great photos. While Te Ahumairangi Hill Lookout is a great spot to watch the sunrise, if you’re up for an early morning walk.

As Kiwis, we love our leisure time. Whether it is cheering on our favourite rugby team in the ITM cup or Super Rugby, our local team in the ANZ Premiership Netball, or watching the mighty All Blacks conquer the world, to screaming for the resurgent Black Caps or dominant Breakers, we love our teams and celebrate their successes and agonise over their near misses.
