Out & About

- Sydney City

Sydney is the capital of New South Wales and is Australia’s oldest and largest city with a population of around 4 million.

Sydney Checklist Don’t leave Sydney without having...

The city is divided into North and South by the Sydney Harbour, with both The Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tunnel connecting them. Most of the tourist attractions are in the South part of the city, with a large business and residential area in the North.

The older part of the city consists of The Rocks and Circular Quay to the North, with Central Station marking the South. Darling Harbour marks the West and there are a number of parks to the East.

Sydney City

The CBD and Harbour were the original area settled when Arthur Phillip established an English penal colony in the “Rocks” in 1788.

6

The rough countryside resulted in a confusing collection of streets and laneways, rather than a neat grid of roads and avenues. It is one of Sydney’s oldest precincts. When you walk the cobblestone streets you get a sense of Sydney’s past and pop into the Rocks Discovery Museum and learn more about the history of the area. Browse the weekend markets or drop into one of Sydney’s oldest pubs for a bite to eat and some live music mosts nights (These days there is probably a cruise ship in port and tourists from all parts of the world walking the streets, not sailors on shore leave). It has a real charm not found anywhere else in Australia.

Out & About

- Sydney City

Sydney is home to many iconic sites, from The Opera House, Harbour Bridge and Bondi Beach, to The Blue Mountains, there are lots of “must do’s” for the first time visitor (and long time resident alike) to experience. The beautiful Harbour foreshore with its proximity to The Rocks area, the Harbour Bridge and the bustling wharf at Circular Quay are often at the top of the list. Catch a ferry to Taronga Zoo or Watsons Bay, or the RiverCat to Parramatta for a day on the water, especially when the sun is shining on a gorgeous spring or summer’s day.

Not much money? Times are tough? Don’t let that stop you from getting out there and experiencing what the great city of Sydney has to offer.

Let us show you how to spend a day or even a week “on the cheap” where you can see and do lots and spend nothing – (or maybe a little). So what are you waiting for? Read on, round up a posse and get out there and do it!!

Take a walk down Macquarie Street to see the Hyde Park Barracks, The Sydney Mint Museum, New South Wales Parliament House and The State Library. At the end there you will find the extensive grounds of the Royal Botanic Gardens with its unbeatable views of the Harbour from Mrs Macquarie’s Chair. While in the city travel to the top of Sydney Tower, the tallest structure in Australia, and see amazing 360° views of Sydney.

1.Why not start your visit to Sydney with a free walking tour with a knowledgable local guide? Rain, hail or shine the guys from I’m Free Walking Tours walk everyday at 10.30am and 2.30pm The 3 hour easy walking tours will show you the sights and give you your bearings so you can then go it alone. 2. Walk around Bennelong Point to the Opera

House. Climb the steps and look back at the city. Maybe take the tour?

3. Check out the kids’ activities at the State Library of NSW. Always changing – always interesting.

4. Walk across the Harbour Bridge – The view

is amazing. If a ship happens to be passing at the same time, it looks spectacular. Start from The Rocks District at the southern end and take the 1.4km stroll across to Milsons Point. Either walk back or catch a train from Milsons Point to Circular Quay Station or take a ferry.

Sydney City

Sydney is still a great mix of old and new just waiting for you, with each “village” having its own distinct character. Check out inner suburbs like Paddington, Glebe, Surry Hills, Woolloomooloo and Newtown to get a feel for the gritty working-class existence of early 1900 Sydney living. The terrace houses, shops, pubs and hidden back lanes are still there. So get off the couch, ring a friend, grab the kids, take advantage of our vouchers and offers in the book and online, sign up for our enewsletter, download the app to “stay in the know” ... and just get out there and DO IT!

5. Take a leisurely weekend stroll around

“The Rocks” or Circular Quay and be entertained by the variety of street performers (donations gratefully accepted). LetsGoKids Sydney 2018

8. Walk the coastal path from Coogee to Bondi.

Spectacular beachside scenery. Views of beaches, parks, cliffs, bays and rock pools runs 6 kilometres and takes about 2 hours to complete. In spring, the Sculptures by the Sea exhibition is scattered along the path.

you will find a great kids pool, a wave pool and a waterslide. (costs a little)

Darling Harbour -

One of Sydney’s largest dining, shopping and entertainment precincts, it has a full calendar of outdoor events as well as one of the city’s most restful spots, the Chinese Gardens of Friendship.

Darling Harbour was reopened by Queen Elizabeth as a tourist area in 1988 after it was transformed from disused railway yards and port facilities into the dazzling array of restaurants, bars, shopping precincts and tourist attractions that it houses today.

A mecca for city workers and visitors alike, it has something for all ages. It is home to the National Maritime Museum, The Sydney Aquarium (p.5), Madame Tussaud’s(p.15), Wild Life Sydney Zoo (p.17), a range of cruise companies and a children’s Theatre Company, Monkey Baa, as well as the great Tumbalong Park and Playground. At Darling Quarter Kid’s Playground, there’s a gigantic circular swing, a tangle of wobbly balance ropes, giant steel slides and a super-long flying fox. The centrepiece is the Octanet: cotton-wool kids need to not venture up the ten-metre-tall contraption – even to us this thing is high! The Powerhouse Museum is nearby and it has constantly changing (family themed) exhibitions. Photo Courtesy of Destination

Only a 10-minute stroll from Town Hall, station over the Pyrmont Bridge or by water from Circular Quay or light rail from Central, Darling Harbour is the perfect place to entertain the whole family, enjoy a delicious harbourside meal or experience Sydney’s energetic night-life.

Playgrounds Steele Park – Marrickville The Park includes an interesting series of waterplay features including a ‘source’ feature representing the water flowing from the mountains, a ‘rills’ section representing water flowing in a river across plains, and an ‘estuary’ feature which includes a collection of jets and sprays. The Waterplay Park was designed to encapsulate the total water cycle. It is fed into play features such as interactive fountains, sprinklers and misty spray elements before being treated onsite and recycled.

Blaxland Riverside Park – Sydney Olympic Park This designer playground is a seriously cool outdoor adventure. Plan your attack from above after ascending the 12-metre-high tree house then race back down to scale rubber-mounded rock-climbing walls and tiptoe across a giant web. There are loads of swings, flying foxes and slides. Parents will also enjoy the lakeside vista. The water play area is one of the biggest around. Newington Armory – Sydney Olympic Park The area has heritage train rides, a clue trail (a la Amazing Race), music and arts workshops and school holiday activities. Livvi’s Place - Five Dock This inner city playground offers lots of interesting play equipment including a roundabout, an all abilities ramp and slide, a climbing net, a sway bridge, tandem bull riders, a snakes and ladders path, a musical sculpture and the natural areas. There’s plenty of shady areas, lots of space for ball games, a cafe and a toilet block.

Nearby, a giant tangle net sits among slides and swings, and you’ll find plenty of those spinning-gravitational-rotators to get on. Plus there are cafés close by for parents, and food trucks often stop by on weekdays.

Of course, everyone knows world famous Bondi, but the Northern Beaches of Manly, Narrabeen, Avalon and Palm Beach are great, as is Bundeena down south. The harbor has small beaches scattered all around with grassy park areas attached. Watson’s and Double Bay have cafes and restaurants nearby to make a day of it. Here is a selection; Coogee Beach - Eastern Suburbs On the spectacular coast, it is protected from big swells by the picturesque Wedding Cake Island, making it a popular beach for families. Wylie’s Bath is a famous pool at the southern end and is an excellent alternative if you have young children. Bronte Beach - Eastern Suburbs Its biggest drawcard is its sheltered position surrounded by parklands, perfect for a picnic in the shade, while the headlands seem to give this beach a bit of a secluded feel.

Murray Rose (Redleaf) Pool - Double Bay Stunning views, and is a great choice thanks to its generous shark net enclosure which makes it popular with young and old. Camp Cove - Watsons Bay A wave-free extremely toddler-friendly beach with shark net, picnic facilities and a very relaxing holiday feel. Older kids may want to jump off the pier or explore the underwater world with their snorkelling gear. There’s also a huge playground with large sun sails that they kids will love. Nielsen Park - Vaucluse Great facilities, a restaurant and kiosk, fabulous views, picnic areas with lots of shade and glistering Shark Beach. If you are a visitor to Sydney, this beach is perfect if you want to combine the beach with some of the best views of the city. Dee Why Beach Excellent family friendly beach and ocean swimming pool. Dee Why has everything you need a for a beach day out and more, with a 50 meter rock pool, fishing area, picnic tables enclosed playground and BBQ area.
