DEAR FESTIVAL VISITORS, LIEBE FESTIVALBESUCHER As the International Radio Festival becomes wellestablished in the global music industry, it is with great pleasure that we celebrate not only this year’s fantastic radio station participants, we can also celebrate the IRF’s success itself. The IRF is now strong in its 3rd year, following a spectacular Olympic Pop-Up Edition in London this summer.

Das International Radio Festival hat sich mittlerweile in der globalen Musikbranche gut etabliert.

Mit grossem Vergnügen feiern wir all die teilnehmenden, grossartigen Sender und natürlich auch das IRF selbst. Nach dem spektakulären Olympia Pop-Up-Event in London geht das Festival nun in die 3. Ausgabe. Und ist erfolgreicher denn je.

At its core, the IRF is all about celebrating music content, showcasing some of the best music radio programmes and personalities from all parts of the world. In addition, music and radio industry leaders gather to confirm ‘content is king’ and how the industry can evolve while collaborating in creative ways.

Im Zentrum steht die Musik, präsentiert von einigen der weltbesten Radioprogrammen und ihren Machern. Dazu vereinen wir führende Köpfe aus Radio und Musik, um das Credo ‘Inhalt ist Trumpf’ zu bekräftigen und mit kreativem Austausch die Weiterentwicklung unserer Branche zu fördern.

We’ve assembled an exceptional Advisory Board of music industry giants: Robert Kraft, awardwinning composer & President of Fox Music; the legendary Tony Prince of DMC World & Princess Caroline fame; Scott Cohen, Co-Founder/Global VP of The Orchard; and British radio futurologist, James Cridland. We look forward to guiding the IRF to the next level.

schloss sihlberg We’re excited to welcome you to the festival’s new day time location: Castle Sihlberg. It was built in 1898 and served as private residence to the wealthy Hürlimann family, owners of a brewery. Seven years ago, this mansion was fully refurbished and brought back to its former glory, with its original neo-gothic style fully preserved, making it Zurich’s most sophisticated event location.

Wir freuen uns, euch in der neuen Festival-Location zu begrüssen: Schloss Sihlberg. Es wurde 1898 gebaut und diente als Wohnsitz der wohlhabenden Familie Hürlimann, Besitzer einer Brauerei. Vor sieben Jahren wurde die Villa restauriert. Zum Glück wurde der ursprüngliche Glanz mit dem originalen Neo-Gothik-Stil bewahrt, was sie zur wohl mondänsten Event-Location von Zürich macht.

Our radio studio is located in the main salon and there are various rooms to both make oneself comfortable in and to soak up or dance to the cool sounds. You’ll meet some of the world’s greatest DJ‘s and radio makers, while enjoying great drinks, tasty snacks and meals from our bar.

Weather permitting, we’ll also open up our garden lounge.

And on Sunday, we’re serving brunch from 10am–3pm. See you there.

Unser Radiostudio befindet sich im Hauptsalon. Dort und in den diversen Nebenzimmern kann man es sich gemütlich machen oder zu den coolen Sounds tanzen. Hier lernst du einige der weltbesten DJs und Radiomacher kennen, während du tolle Drinks, leckere Snacks und Menus von unserer Bar geniesst. Bei schönem Wetter öffnen wir zudem unsere Gartenlounge. Und am Sonntag servieren wir Brunch von 10 bis 15 Uhr. Man sieht sich dort.

Previous visitors of the festival know this Hotel amidst the Sihlcity shopping centre all too well.

It’s from where our Warm Up Session and daily morning show are broadcast live. All of our festival guests stay here and the lounge serves an excellent breakfast as well as great cocktails.

To set the proper scene for our party nights, we’re broadcasting live from Zurich’s coolest club for Underground Electronica: Cabaret. On Friday and Saturday after midnight, it’s the IRF takeover with DJs from London & Ibiza. Two big parties. Don’t miss it.

The IRF showcases the best music radio stations on earth. In only its 3rd year it has already established itself as the global annual event for people at the cutting edge of the music radio industry.

Once again we’ve invited 25 avant-garde radio stations and DJ’s from five continents to Zurich. From there they’ll broadcast their shows live from one of our festival locations, via web-radio, to millions of listeners around the globe.

Main Speakers

GABBY SANDERSON Our main female voice. As a DJ, radio/TV presenter, producer and music journalist, Gabby travelled the world but lived mostly in Ibiza. Her influential Ibiza Rocks show counted over 100,000 listeners worldwide and her podcasts are downloaded over 500 times a day. She now resides in London and mainly broadcasts for Ireland’s RTE 2XM. Gabby adds her sparkle to every show.

NORMSKI This man has been a charismatic presenter of our festival since we started back in 2010. For over 20 years, Normski has been a popular radio/TV presenter and DJ in the UK. His shows on BBC Radio 5 and Kiss FM have played a vital part in London’s ever emerging sub culture. Expect lots of cheeky banter. We’re happy he’s with us once again.

– Unsere weibliche Hauptstimme. Als DJ, Radio-/ TV-Moderatorin und Musikjournalistin bereiste sie die ganze Welt, hat aber meist auf Ibiza gelebt.

Ihre einflussreiche Show auf Ibiza Rocks hatte über 100’000 Hörer weltweit und ihre Podcasts werden täglich 500x heruntergeladen. Nun wohnt sie in London und arbeitet vor allem für RTE 2XM aus Irland. Gabby sprüht vor Charme und das hört man in jeder ihrer Shows.

Schon seit dem Start unseres Festivals 2010 ist der charismatische Mann unser Hauptmoderator.

Normski ist seit über 20 Jahren ein bekannter Radio/TV-Moderator und DJ in Grossbritannien. Seine Shows auf BBC Radio 5 und Kiss FM spielten eine tragende Rolle in der ständig wandelnden Subkultur Londons. Macht euch gefasst auf freche Sprüche.

AWARD FOR ‘BEST SWISS RADIO SHOW 2012’ Every year we honor one of Switzerland’s radio programmes for its special achievements. We are proud to announce this year’s winner as Sounds! The show runs Monday to Friday from 22–24h on DRS3, Switzerland’s leading German-speaking radio station. It’s also the most popular, with over one million listeners daily. For a country with just eight million people, that’s quite impressive.

– Jedes Jahr ehren wir eine schweizer Radioshow für ihre besonderen Verdienste. Wir freuen uns bekanntzugeben, dass der diesjährige Gewinner Sounds! heisst. We start the first international day of our festival with UK’s biggest online dance station. It plays the best in new and popular electronic dance and ambient music, and hosts famous specialist shows from the likes of Hed Kandi and Xpress2. They stream online across all platforms and there’s been over 1 million downloads of their free mobile app.

100FM broadcasts all kind of music styles. Listeners range from the ages of 7 – 80 years and the station praises itself as having at least one show for the perfect taste of every single one of its listeners.

It used to be a joint-venture with MTV Israel but now stands on its own feet. Thanks to a diverse programme and entertaining speakers.

Presenter Steve O.C is the station’s Manager and is a long time creator of global radio programmes. His show plays the most chilled tunes ever and it has also been turned into a world famous CD compilation series.

Guest DJ Yaron Ashbel is well known for having an own voice and a unique sense of humour. His show features retro music and is the happiest show on Israeli airwaves.

Aimed at a younger audience who are tired of clichés, Roxy keeps on pushing the limits by playing alternative guitar sounds and odd electronica. Always spiked with a healthy dose of lively banter, these guys are some of the loveliest radio rebels you’ll ever meet.

The Indian FM radio industry has never been so vibrant. Even as state owned broadcaster All India Radio celebrates its 85th birthday, community stations are sprouting up everywhere. Private FM broadcasters are straining at the leash, waiting for the government to free up more frequencies, so they can launch 2nd or 3rd stations in major cities and new ones in smaller towns. 800 new stations are expected to come up for bidding once the government introduces the auctioning and tender system.

With a population of 1.3 billion and over 300 million radio listeners speaking 26 languages, India almost outsizes Europe. Plus there are over 900 million mobile phones in use, for listening to radio.

The national language is English, but Hindi is spoken and understood almost everywhere. Musical Hindi films are in the culture and ethos, and the music featured in them is extremely popular. Only the southern regions favour films and songs in local languages such as Tamil, Kannada or Malayalam.

International music is demanded by a small audience.

As a reflection of the musical likes and tastes, most FM stations have a mix of radio DJ talk and Bollywood music. They are all quite similar and attempts at launching different genre stations have failed so far. The famous Radio One has now launched an all English station in Mumbai and are slowly gaining in popularity with listeners and advertisers.

After its success in Kenya, non-profit Ghetto Radio will open a station in Ghana next December. It plans to aim at lower income class youngsters by showcasing local urban culture, and thus give them a voice in society. The creative minds behind it also run thisisafrica.me, a charitable platform for local bloggers, photographers and directors to share trends and views with their community. A reflection of the urban subcultures in modern day Africa.

A new web radio station from the capital of club culture, made by the brains behind Ibiza Sonica.

Following the success of the IRF we were invited to take part in the Swiss festivities during London 2012, with our very own Olympic PopUp Radio Station.

Throughout the Games we’ve broadcasted contemporary Swiss and British urban sounds, and welcomed renowned music radio DJ’s, bands, celebrities and athletes.

Our studio was housed inside a funky Swiss Postal Bus, which we’ve driven from Zurich to London. Before leaving for London our bus visited six major cities in Switzerland, broadcasting live from each and showcasing unplugged concerts of local bands. Which was of course broadcast around the world.

– Dank des Erfolgs des IRFs wurden wir eingeladen an den schweizer Festlichkeiten während den Olympischen Spielen in London teilzunehmen, mit unserem Olympischen Pop-Up Radio Sender.

Während der gesamten Olympiade sendeten wir schweizer sowie britische Urban Sounds und begrüssten dazu Radio-DJs, Bands, Athleten und weitere berühmte Persönlichkeiten im Studio.

Als Studio diente uns ein umgebautes Schweizer Postauto, mit dem wir von Zürich nach London gefahren sind. Vor dem Überfahrt machten wir Halt in sechs schweizer Grossstädten, von wo aus wir jeweils Live Unplugged-Konzerte von lokalen Bands übetrugen. Gesendet wurde dies stets um die ganze Erde.
