An English neighbour of mine, who has worked in photography for many years, told me about a project she had conceived and curated in which women’s activities, in various countries of the world, were portrayed by a female photographer.

Very interesting, I thought to myself. The idea of b​​ ringing to light, of capturing something otherwise unnoticed is very beautiful.

A woman who photographs other women of her country engaging in a task, is it is having a look from within. The invisibility of women’s actions is proportional to the money earned to make them. Important tasks, yet little recognized, hidden from the eyes of many, activities which are not given the credit they deserve.

The summer holidays were near and we would have gone to Sambuca di Sicilia to Marcella and Mauro’s house, the Casa Laboratorio San Giacomo. They have been living in the countryside for many years, creating a company where biodiversity and sustainability in agriculture are celebrated. There, every year we meet with a group of friends to spend some time together in the countryside, playing with our band (Peluches Brutales) enjoying the Mediterranian sea and eating the tasty Sicilian food.

We have lived in London for many years now and we miss our culture and food, so that when we are there, we enjoy the contact with nature, the genuine flavors of the earth, the way of being together that no longer belongs to our everyday life.

Precisely this living away has given us new eyes, to appreciate things that before we took for granted, to think of a way of life in which we return to having relationships with food, with nature and with people in a less alienated way.

Having fresh tomato sauce in the fridge to season spaghetti was common when I was a kid. At the end of the summer, when the tomatoes are more juicy, the sauce was bottled and stored for the winter. This procedure, which was the monopoly of women of Italian families, allowed for a ready-made pasta dressing, to organize a quick lunch with minimum effort. Even if the sauce is bottled, it remains a tasty, genuine product.

Photographing the process of bottling the tomatoes for the winter was the idea for my project, an activity that has become increasingly rare and to create a photo book that would explain the procedure.

The 10thAugust 2019, we picked up the equipment, bought thirty kilos of local tomatoes, and instead of heading to the beach, we spent the day squeezing tomatoes putting the red, fragrant and sweet juice in bottles that would have cheered our winter days.

I, to the great disappointment of those present and my great happiness, ‘only’ took pictures enjoying everything: the blue sky, the company, the objects that were used as well as the final product, because after that long day we obviously had an excellent pasta dish.

There is not a single tomato and not a single tomato sauce, there is a field, a climate, a local and family tradition, a story that has been handed down from one generation to another.

These actions, these hands at work, this procedure, these tools, those places, those objects, those people, are things that I wanted to pause with my photographs to give other people the same joy that I feel.

In this project I would like to share, yes my love for a special product, but also for a philosophy of life, which we had and are losing. Printed on this book are images that can witness this tradition, testifying to future generations a sense of identity and to people from another country, a different way of thinking about food, flavors and being together.

Una mia vicina londinese mi raccontava di un suo progetto in cui attività femminili in vari paesi del mondo venivano ritratte da una fotografa donna.

Molto interessante, pensavo tra me e me, l’idea era di mettere alla luce, di fotografare qualcosa che riguarda le donne, specialmente se qualcosa di poco osservato. Una donna che fotografa altre donne mentre fanno una attività, ha uno sguardo dal di dentro.

L’invisibilità delle azioni delle donne, riflettevo, è proporzionale al denaro guadagnato nel farle. Compiti importantissimi, eppure non retribuiti, poco riconosciuti, celati agli occhi di molti, compiti e azioni cui non è dato il credito che meritano. Un’idea forte, che mi riproposi di abbracciare alla prima occasione possibile. L’occasione era dietro l’angolo.

Le vacanze estive erano vicine e saremmo andati a Sambuca di Sicilia da Marcella e Mauro, che vivono in campagna da tanti anni e hanno creato la Casa Laboratorio San Giacomo, un’azienda dove si celebra la biodiversità e la sostenibilità in agricoltura. Ci riuniamo lì con un gruppo di amici per stare finalmente insieme, rimettere su la band dei (Peluches Brutales) e fare del mare vero.

Quando siamo all’azienda, noi che ormai viviamo in una metropoli da tanti anni, godiamo del contatto con la natura, dei sapori genuini della terra, di un modo di stare insieme che abbiamo vissuto ma che non appartiene più al nostro quotidiano.

Eppure proprio questo vivere lontano ci ha dato occhi nuovi, capaci di apprezzare cose che prima davamo per scontate, e l’occasione di ripensare a uno stile di vita in cui si ritorna ad avere dei rapporti con il cibo, con la natura e con le persone in modo meno alienante, che somigli ai modi antichi pur rivisitati e corretti in veste moderna.

Avere nel frigorifero la salsa di pomodoro fresca per condire gli spaghetti, era una cosa normale quando io ero piccola. Alla fine dell’estate, quando i pomodori sono più succosi, la salsa era imbottigliata e conservata per l’inverno. Questa procedura, che era monopolio delle donne delle famiglie italiane, consentiva di avere un condimento della pasta pronto per organizzare un pranzo veloce senza il minimo sforzo.

La salsa, anche se imbottigliata, rimane un prodotto gustoso, genuino e saporito.

Così il 10 Agosto 2019 abbiamo prelevato attrezzatura e trenta chili di pomodori locali, e invece che al mare abbiamo passato la giornata a spremerli e mettere il succo rosso, profumato e dolce in bottiglie che avrebbero poi allietato i nostri giorni invernali.

Io, con grande disappunto dei presenti e mia grande felicità, ho fatto ‘solo’ fotografie godendomi tutto: il cielo blu, la compagnia, gli oggetti che erano usati, nonché il prodotto finale, perché dopo quella lunga giornata abbiamo ovviamente mangiato un ottimo piatto di pasta.

Non esiste un solo pomodoro e neanche una sola salsa di pomodoro; esiste un campo, un clima, una tradizione locale e familiare, una storia che si tramanda da una generazione all’altra. Queste azioni, queste mani al lavoro, questi attrezzi e procedura, sono ciò che ho voluto fermare con le mie fotografie per dare risalto ad un attività sempre più rara, e ne ho fatto un libro che ne spiegasse la procedura.

Con questo progetto vorrei condividere il mio amore per un prodotto speciale, ma anche per una filosofia di vita c stiamo perdendo.

E così tramandare una tradizione, testimoniando alle nostre generazioni future un simbolo d’identità e alle persone di altri paesi un modo diverso di pensare al cibo, ai sapori e allo stare insieme.

INFORMATION AND COSTS FOR 30 KILOS OF TOMATOES We made 30 bottles with 30 kilos of tomatoes using these ingredients and quantity: Ingredients: tomatoes, basil, onions, oil, salt.

Tomato type: locally produced tomatoes called Sambucese (from Sambuca di Sicilia).

Tomato quantity: we used 30 kilos (you can use as many as you like).

Quantity of basil, onions, oil, salt: for 30 kilos of tomatoes, we used 1 kilo of onions, 750ml of oil, a bunch of basil and for the salt, try adding small quantities at a time, and taste it, until you think it is salted properly.

Bottles: beer bottles were used.

We used equipment for large quantities. You can use pots and pans that you have at home, but you need the press, the capping machine, the caps and empty bottles if you want to sterilize and bottle the tomatoes for the winter.

INFORMATIONI E COSTI PER 30 CHILI DI POMODORO Con 30 chili di pomodoro abbimo fatto 30 bottiglie di salsa, utilizzando questi ingredienti e quantitá: Ingredienti: pomodoro, basilico, cipolle, olio e sale.

Tipo di pomodoro: pomodoro locale Sambucese (coltivato a Sambuca di Sicilia).

Quantità del pomodoro: noi abbiamo usato 30 chili di pomodoro. (potete usare qualsiasi quantitá).

Quantità di basilico, cipolle, olio e sale: (per 30 chili di pomodoro) durante la cottura abbiamo aggiunto, un mazzo di basilico, 1 kilo di cipolle dolci, 750 ml di olio e sale (il sale va aggiunto a gradi, a poco a poco).

Bottiglie: bottiglie di birra usate.

Noi abbiamo usato il passapomodoro elettrico perché abbiamo fatto molte bottiglie. Per mangiarla subito, senza imbottigliarla, si possono usare pentole e mestoli che si usano a casa, con l’aggiunta del passapomodoro.

Se si vuole imbottigliare, bisogna avere anche i tappi, la tappatrice e le bottiglie vuote.

Che la passata di pomodoro sia molto più di una salsa densa e appetitosa è una consapevolezza che fa parte del patrimonio emotivo di ogni italiano.
