In response to the current health situation, the Rencontres d’A rles is offering a modified version of its flagship educational event, which traditionally involves hosting around 10,000 students in September to visit the exhibitions. In 2021, the festival has decided to go out to educational establishments in Aix-Marseille and Nice academies in the fall and offer a program on image education during school hours, one that’s related to the festival’s program and to formal education in arts and culture.

THE BOOK AWARDS The Rencontres d’A rles Book Awards were created in order to support the swift growth in the publishing of photography books and to help them reach a broader public. There are now three categories of books: Authors’ Books award, Historical Books award and Photo-text Books award. Each award comes with a €6,000 prize and singles out the best photography books published during the year. Main partner: Fondation Jan Michalski pour l’Écriture et la Littérature. With support from Fnac for the Author Book Award.
LUMA RENCONTRES DUMMY BOOK AWARD Since 2015, the Rencontres d’A rles offers an award supporting the publication of a dummy book. This prize, with a production budget of €25,000, is open to any new photographer or artist using photography, submitting a previously unpublished dummy book. Special attention is paid to experimental and innovative publication forms. With support from the Luma Foundation.
HOW DO WE WANT TO LIVE? POLITICS OF PHOTOMONTAGE
The Rencontres d’A rles associates the Louis Roederer Discovery Award with all exhibition spaces: galleries, art centers, non‑profits, independent venues and institutions are often the first to support emerging artists. During opening week, a jury will bestow the Louis Roederer Discovery Award, which comes with an acquisition worth €15,000, upon an artist and the project’s supporting organization. The public will vote for the Public Award, which carries with it an acquisition worth €5,000.

ONLINE SUPPORT Complete a personal project in 10 weeks, a special time including precise, constructive feedback as relevant as possible to each individual’s needs and expectations. It can be followed up with a face‑to-face course in Arles in the spring or summer.

The Women In Motion Award recognizes the achievements of outstanding women photographers. It is endowed with €25,000 to acquire works by the winning photographer that will enrich the Rencontres d’A rles collection. The award ceremony takes place on an evening at the Théâtre Antique. The Women In Motion LAB is dedicated to a research project focusing on women’s contributions to the history of photography.
The collection is the outcome of many years of close collaboration and mutual trust between the Rencontres d’A rles and the photographers who have shown their work at the festival. Today it includes nearly 3,500 pictures donated by over 470 photographers since 1976, when the festival established the practice of asking each photographer participating in the festival to enrich the collection with one or more exhibited works. collection.rencontres-arles.com

Based on the vitality of Franco-Indian cultural ties to foster regional cooperation, the Serendipity Arts Foundation and the Rencontres d’A rles have launched a major grant for photography, video and new media, an initiative backed by the Institut français in India. The INR 1,200,000 (approximately €15,000) grant offers artists from many countries, such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the opportunity to develop an exhibition project and present it at the Rencontres d’A rles.

The Women In Motion award for 2021 will be attributed to Liz Johnson Artur during a large reception at the Théâtre Antique on Monday, July 5th.
A main partner of the 2021 Book Awards and Temple Arles Books, the Fondation Jan Michalski pour l’Écriture et la Littérature, located in Montricher, Switzerland, is dedicated to fostering creative writing by supporting players in the world of writing and developing a taste for reading in the general public.
Since 2017, Lët’z Arles has been bringing a bit of Luxembourgish artistic creation to the Rencontres d’A rles. Lët’z Arles supports and promotes photography and artists linked to Luxembourg. Each year, it offers artists a complete creation and promotion programme. This year, the association unveils the works Providencia by Daniel Reuter and Erre by Lisa Kohl.
A patron of the Rencontres d’A rles, the Louis Roederer Fondation provides support for contemporary art and reveals new talents through the Louis Roederer Discovery Award, which will be awarded at the Théâtre Antique on Saturday, July 10.

For the seventh consecutive year, the Rencontres d’A rles is going to Xiamen, in Southern China. This event was co-founded by Sam Stourdzé (director of the Académie de France-Villa Médicis and former director of the Rencontres d’A rles) and Chinese photographer RongRong (co-founder of the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre, China’s first photography center). Each year, Jimei × Arles brings a selection of shows from the Rencontres d’A rles to China and produces over 20 exhibitions of work by Chinese and Asian photographers. Cited as an example of Franco-Chinese cultural cooperation, Jimei × Arles aims to assert its role as a photography platform in Asia. jimeiarles.com
