The Future of Wellness: A True Tool for Social Change?
By Dr Nadine de Freitas - Les Nouvelles Esthetiques &

In recent years, wellness has increasingly become a focal point in conversations about personal health, happiness, and lifestyle. Traditionally, wellness has been associated with self-care practices that promote physical fitness, mental clarity, and overall well-being. However, as we evolve and deepen our understanding of wellness, a more significant shift is taking place. Wellness is now seen by many as a tool for social change. At its core, wellness is about promoting health and well-being, but the concept is expanding beyond personal benefit to include collective healing, empowerment, and social justice.
The future of wellness lies not just in individual wellbeing but in the broader impact it can have on society. Wellness spaces-whether they are fitness centers, retreat hubs, wellness clinics, or community centers-are increasingly being viewed as platforms for social change.
But can wellness truly serve as a tool for social change? This question invites us to examine the current state of wellness, its potential for future impact, and the challenges that need to be addressed to ensure that wellness spaces contribute to a more equitable, just, and compassionate society.
The Changing Face of Wellness: From Self-Care to Social Care
Historically, wellness has been framed primarily as an individual pursuit. The wellness industry, especially in its commercialized form, has been built around the idea that personal health is something to be achieved through private meansfitness memberships, spa treatments, wellness retreats, and organic diets. This version of wellness, though beneficial in its own right, has often been inaccessible to a significant portion of the population due to the high cost of services, the emphasis on individualism, and the lack of focus on community or collective care.
However, as awareness grows about the social determinants of health-such as income, education, environment, and social connection-the narrative surrounding wellness is evolving. Wellness is increasingly being seen as a shared experience, one that acknowledges the interconnectedness of individual well-being and community health. Wellness spaces are beginning to reflect this shift, with more emphasis on inclusivity, accessibility, and collective empowerment.
Wellness Spaces as Catalysts for Social Change
Wellness spaces are uniquely positioned to serve as powerful catalysts for social change. These spaces are increasingly recognizing the role they play in addressing the needs of diverse populations. More wellness centers and initiatives are specifically focused on helping marginalized communities, such as low-income families, immigrants, and people living with disabilities, to overcome the physical, mental, and emotional challenges they face.
For instance, wellness spaces that cater to underserved populations may offer free or lowcost services such as yoga and fitness classes, nutritional support, mental health counseling, and stress management workshops. These spaces not only provide access to essential health resources but also create a sense of belonging and community among people who may have been excluded from traditional wellness spaces due to financial or social barriers.
