LIBRARY OF A MIDWESTERN COLLECTOR On November 5th, Hindman will be selling a singleowner collection of books, Library of a Midwestern Collector, which includes fine examples of works which have influenced the development of western thought and civilization. The sale will include high spots in the fields of science, technology, math and statistics, literature, Americana, and the social sciences, many with extraordinary provenance. Highlights include works by Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton, Galileo, Alan Turing, A first edition of Charles Euclid, James Joyce, J. K. Darwin’s On the Origin of Rowling, Thomas Jefferson, Species (pre-sale estimate of $120,000-180,000) will be offered November 5 in Adam Smith, and John the Library of a Midwestern Collector auction. An exceptionally fine, and signed copy of J.K. Rowling’s classic Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is part of Hindman’s Library of a Midwestern Collector auction on November 5. The rare first edition has a pre-sale estimate of $80,000–120,000.

AMERICAN AND EUROPEAN ART The October 17 American and European Art auction will offer a painting by Thomas Hart Benton, titled Whiskey Going into the Rackhouse to Age or Whiskey Barrels, from 1945. The work was commissioned by Hiram Walker-Gooderham & Worts Limited, for use in their Imperial Whiskey advertisements. Founder of Imperial Whiskey, Hiram Walker, pioneered the process of barrel-aging whiskey, which was made previously by pouring spirits over charcoal. After being used in ads, the original work was stored away and forgotten until the 1980s, when the old Hiram Walker distillery was purchased for use by Maker’s Mark. It has hung in the Maker’s Mark Distillery in Loretto, Kentucky until recently, when it was lent to the Frazier History Museum, in Louisville, for their exhibition, “Whiskey’s Artistic Side” (ongoing).

The work was originally commissioned for use in Imperial Whiskey advertisements before being stored and forgotten for decades. Jean and Hilbert Sosin built their collection over the course of three decades, serving as early pioneers for the movement and eventually acquiring one the largest and most significant collections of contemporary art glass. One of the top selling highlights of the Sosin collection was Marvin Lipofsky’s Frauenau Group #8 which surpassed presale estimates realizing $18,900. The collection of Studio Art Glass from Audrey Mann included Marquiscarpa by Richard Marquis which set a record for the artist at auction selling for $30,000. Ralph and Evelyn Goldstein’s collection featured a highlight by Toots Zynsky titled Vessel which also surpassed presale expectations selling for $9,375.

POST WAR & CONTEMPORARY ART Hindman’s May 22nd Post War and Contemporary Art auction featured Sam Francis’ Untitled (SF77-161), 1977, from the Estate of Billie Ross, Chicago, Illinois. The work far surpassed its presale estimate of $60,000-80,000, realizing $157,500. Untitled (SF77-161), 1977, is a strong example of Sam Francis’ Matrix works from the 70s, using the formal structure of a brayer laid grid to balance the improvisational dancing spatters of automatic wet on wet action paint application. The complexity of the full prism dripped organic patterns blending with the hard edged crisscrossing deep purple intersections create a dense composition that evokes a playful and pleasing oil slick dreamscape with a free jazz soundtrack,” said Zack Wirsum, Senior Specialist Sam Francis’ Untitled (SF77-161), 1977 surpassed its presale estimate of $60,000-80,000, realizing $157,500 in Hindman’s May 22 Post War and Contemporary Art auction.
