THE COLLECTION OF JAMES DAWSON One might be tempted to judge Jim Dawson by the collection offered in this auction. And what a collection. That would be a mistake. While Jim was a fairly quiet collector, fewer still knew him for his career as an obstetrician, spent almost entirely in the Appalachians of Eastern Kentucky. In Jim’s recollection, he delivered more than 10,000 babies over the course of his 37 year practice in Corbin, Kentucky. Between deliveries, Jim found time to assemble a collection of great furniture and folk art. As you’ll see in this offering, he had a connoisseur’s eye. Great form, great surface and great aesthetic appeal are all in evidence here. He knew a good piece when he saw it and collected fearlessly. Andy Anderson, David Schorsch, David Good, Austin Miller and others were friends and sources for many of his greatest pieces.

THE WES AND SHELLEY COWAN COLLECTION Downsizing. It’s what will happen to most collectors, whether you’re a Boomer, Gen X’er or some other generational iteration. Shelley and I have done it twice now as we moved from one place smaller than the next. Each time we’ve moved, bits and pieces have found new homes. The current offering is by far the biggest group of treasures we’ve sold, and of course, more painful than the last. But our current home simply can’t hold it all, and now it’s time to pass the stuff offered here along to new owners. We’ve lived with every piece in this and loved them all. Here’s to hoping you’ll find something of interest! Wes and Shelley Cowan September, 2021

PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF PAUL THOMAS GRIFFITH Paul Thomas Griffith was born in Dayton in 1939 and spent his life in Ohio, educated at the College of Wooster and Ohio State University. He taught art at Oakwood Junior High School in Dayton for 40 years, a favorite among his students. A pervasive love of art and history was evident in his personal life as well. Mr. Griffith was a lifelong collector with wide-ranging interests but a keen eye. He filled his early American style home with English and American furniture, Delftware, Persian rugs, early English embroideries, pewter and brass candlesticks. He searched for the perfect pieces, from Sotheby’s catalogs to local antique stores in order to create a beautiful and interesting interior. PROPERTY FROM DEAN LOWER ESTATE Hindman is pleased to present property from the Estate of Dean Lower of Lanark, IL. Born in 1931, Dean farmed with his grandfather, father, and later his sons and grandsons on land that has been in the family for seven generations. Dean began in the early 1970s to build his impressive collection of Americana, stoneware, painted furniture, toys, early lighting, signs, folk art and Christmas decorations.   Well respected in all his endeavors and a friend and mentor to many, Dean graciously shared with family and other collectors. He was a distinct combination of farmer and artist. He arranged his collection with flair as more items were added and his interests grew.  He loved going to antique shows and auctions, as much to visit with “antique” friends as to purchase items. He valued being part of Golden Glow and Antique Toy Collectors of America. His main goal was to teach and preserve the artisan work and creativity of the past so that future generations would continue to appreciate our American heritage.  Dean understood that he was a steward and caretaker for these wonderful antiques, and his family’s hope is that these items will be as cherished as they were by him.
