School as a Source of Meaning

his past summer, I enjoyed having some quiet days when I could reflect on my first year at DCD. I had fun thinking about many great moments—moments far too numerous to list—and could hardly believe that one school year contained so much joy. I also reflected on some of the losses and challenges that occurred during the year and the caring way members of the DCD community support each other when faced with adversity.

But my topic for tonight came to me when I was considering what made DCD different from other schools where I have taught or had a leadership role. Over and over again, I came back to the strong sense of meaning that is generated at our school—and this is the topic I want to explore tonight. How is DCD able to generate such a strong sense of meaning for both adults and children, and what impact does this have on our experiences at the school?

Emily Esfahani Smith recently published a book, The Power of Meaning: Finding Fulfillment in a World Obsessed with Happiness, and it puts together the research on why meaning is essential to our well-being. As I read it, I considered how the ideas in it apply to students, and the book helped me understand more about how the presence or absence of meaning influences learning.

First, I’ll bring you to my own school experience in Winchester, Massachusetts, a small town just eight miles north of Boston. The year is 1981. I’m 16, and my days are spent as a 10th grader at Winchester High School. I may have cranked up Bruce Springsteen’s Hungry Heart on my way to school, if I was lucky

enough to take the car that morning.

Invariably, one highlight of the day would be lunch with my best friends, still among my closest friends today.

I was safe at school. I had friends and family I loved. I had activities I cared about and pursued. But in spite of the positives of my life as a high school student, I hated my classes. I moved from class to class, worksheet to worksheet, lecture to lecture, with no idea at all about why the things I was learning were important outside their utility as a means

and Chaucer and Macbeth because of the way she made those texts and authors relevant and vital. Each student voice in her class was important to our classroom discussions. She helped us see what was beautiful and transcendent in literature that was hundreds of years old. It was clear that our learning had a purpose, since we were reading texts to better understand ourselves and our world.

When I was in her class, I felt a sense of meaning—the things we were spending our time on mattered. The experience I

All these years later, I still know that school ended at 2:17 p.m.

I’d cheer for snow days, skip as many classes as I could , and muddle through the academic portion of school without little engagement. It all seemed like a random assortment of stuff to be learned and done, and I didn’t see how my participation or lack thereof made any difference to anyone. My academic experience lacked meaning for me.

I found just one bright spot in all of high school, an English class with Ms. Hession during my sophomore year.

My sophomore year of college—at long last—I fell in love with school, and with the experience of learning in a community. I did an experimental program at my college, called “Community of Learners,” and a cohort and I took classes in North American literature, U.S. history, and economics, as well as a weekly seminar to discuss and synthesize all we were learning. It was intellectually stimulating, purposeful, and finally a switch was turned. I came to understand the incredible power—and feeling of meaning—that could be found when one is part of a learning community.

in law, education, and psychology, and in each of these programs, I again found a deep sense of meaning in my academic work.

Now I don’t claim that my high school experience was terrible. Sometimes we just get things done without looking for meaning. But while it was not disastrous to muddle through the academic side of my middle and high school years, there was an opportunity cost in not expecting or finding more. My early school experience stands in stark contrast to the experience students and adults have at DCD. Our school’s ability to cultivate meaning, and use this to fuel the motivation of the entire community, stands out to me as one of our great strengths. A top commendation from our AISNE visiting team noted how well we create and maintain a learning environment that is consistent with our mission; our zeal for doing so comes from a deep belief in our mission, and also from the meaning children and adults gain from bringing our mission to life.

So how do I see teachers cultivate a sense of meaning at DCD? Recent research highlights four pillars that help people find meaning, and I want to share some examples of how each of these is developed at DCD. The first pillar is belonging. If you’ve ever seen the joy on a child’s face the first time she is handed a team jersey or band instrument, you know children find meaning through belonging.

For most children, this starts with a sense of belonging in their own family, and it is critical to their confidence and independence that they begin to find this

sense of belonging in groups outside their family from an early age.

In a family, a child might have fights with siblings, have moments where they feel frustrated or wronged by their parent’s rules, and at times even claim they wish they were not part of the family, but they still are likely to feel a sense of belonging. The same is true at DCD. A student will inevitably experience social ups and downs, but they still have an identity as part of the school and are likely to feel a sense of belonging.

Earlier this week, I told two middle school students I was thinking about belonging, and I asked them, “How do you know you belong at DCD?” With not a second of delay, they both busted out with an example: Ms. Leith always makes sure she hears from all of us if we are working on a problem; our advisors make it clear that each of us is a part of the group.” I find it remarkable that they instantly understood the question; that they had an example within seconds; and that for both of them, their example came from the actions of teachers.

These examples demonstrate how

older students find belonging, but what does it look like as young children begin to find belonging outside of the family? A couple of weeks ago, I had a brief conversation with a student, which sparked the idea of starting a first grade band. Our band would focus on one song—Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star— relegating us to the world of one-hit wonders right from the start. So far, we have a ukulele, a violin, a keyboard, and one student on vocals. Rumor has it that an additional lower school student just started the clarinet and may be able to join the band. Mind you, the band has never had a rehearsal—at least not yet— and two of the musicians are still in their first month of studying their instruments.

This does nothing to diminish the joy of children who see me and say, with great earnestness, that they have found another member for our band. Just the idea of the band—and the idea of belonging to it—is a source of meaning for these children.

If children feel this much connection to something that is almost imaginary, imagine their sense of belonging in one of our musical groups that actually practices 3

The Four Pillars of Meaning: and performs, or their robotics club, or homeroom, or an art elective, or sports team. In each of these cases, children know they are part of something larger then themselves, and that each of them is needed by the whole. Even on the days when a child is experiencing a conflict with a peer or feeling lonely, we still have 265 children who belong in this community—and that adds to each child’s sense of meaning. I know the same is true for adults in this community, many of whom have spent decades belonging to and building our school.

A second pillar of a meaningful life is finding a sense of purpose. As adults, we may feel a sense of purpose when we help a colleague at work or help our children accomplish a goal. As a school, we find purpose when we fulfill our mission, whether during the school year or during our Horizons program in the summer.

But how do children find purpose?

Our service program is one way.

According to recent research, adolescents who do chores feel a greater sense of purpose because they are contributing to something larger than themselves.

Another study found this same effect when teens cheered up a friend.

Activities that give us meaning can be mundane—and that’s part of the point.

A sense of purpose is not about pursuing fame or finding glory, but rather about making a contribution and knowing your actions matter.

Last week, a few of our eighth graders served as greeters. They added great conviviality and vitality to the curb one morning, even developing a dance to remind people to pull all the way

up in the carpool line. One listened intently while a kindergarten student described her plans for a light-up fairy Halloween costume. The eighth grader asked thoughtful questions about what is involved in being a light-up fairy, and she listened with great interest while learning it takes way more than light-up wings. Each of those eighth graders started their day knowing they had a purpose at DCD. Welcoming younger students and setting a tone for the day reminded the older students that their actions matter to others.

gain perspective, think differently about situations, demonstrate flexibility, and see the positive impact they can have on situations that are difficult.

But parents and teachers know it can be hard to make sense of some events in our lives. Sometimes we have to help children understand things that don’t make sense even to us as adults. At times, our narratives have to acknowledge and hold the contradictions in the world. Good people lose their homes and lives in natural disasters.

World powers threaten each other with terrifying weapons. At times, hatred and bigotry flair and overshadow kindness and love.

Regardless of the topics children bring to us, DCD’s teachers help children understand and make sense of the many things they experience in our rich, wonderful, and confounding world.

Finally, we find meaning through transcendence. When children experience beauty or encounter things that inspire awe, they feel transcendence—and this helps them to develop a sense of meaning. Everyone at DCD witnessed this the other morning when middle school art teacher Lisa Houck shared her experience of viewing the solar eclipse in Oregon, one of the locations that had two minutes of total darkness (see article on page 15).

Students and adults were captivated by her beautiful photographs of the event and by the paintings she was inspired to create from the experience of viewing the eclipse.

I ended that assembly by challenging students to find something that inspires awe during their day at school. While they were unlikely to see anything as

A third pillar of meaning is the ability to be a storyteller, to make sense of the disparate events in our lives and shape them into a coherent narrative.

Every day, I see DCD’s teachers help children learn how to narrate their lives, to be storytellers in this sense of the word. A third grader struggled with a math test and declared, “I’m always terrible at math.” A teacher helped her reframe her thinking and make sense of that event, seeing the failed test as a setback that was within her control to change and improve.

Children bring all kinds of events to their teachers, and some of them are easier than others to narrate. As teachers and parents, we can respond when we hear the usual woes: my friend is mad at me; we lost the game; everyone else wrote a better paper than me. Through our narratives, we can help children

Belonging, Sense of Purpose, Storytelling, Transcendance dramatic as the eclipse, I assured them that if they looked carefully, they might still find something during an ordinary school day that would provide a moment of awe.

I was delighted when I went into lunch that day and a group of students called me over to their lunch table. They were excited to tell me what had given them a “wow,” or a sense of awe, that morning: “I saw a feather with lots of sparkle colors”; “I saw a white flower with pink curlies on the end”; “I read a story that made me laugh”; “I saw the red of the hawk because the sun was on his back.”

Faculty and staff shared moments that had given them a sense of awe when we met last June. Story after story was told of small victories children experienced, moments of growth, moments of understanding, moments of humor.

Like parenting, a school year involves an enormous amount of ordinary hard work and toil. But taking the time to step back, to celebrate our collective power to create a year peppered with so many awe-filled moments, added meaning to our work together.

Meaning is often tucked below the waterline of any given day, serving as a foundation for our lives, but not always visible. On a typically frantic morning, my only conscious thought of awe may be that everyone made it out of the house on time. Your child’s feeling of belonging may make you groan when you realize the team they belong to has an extra practice at night. Or, you may be too busy to remember the events in your day, let alone try to come up with a coherent narrative that fits them together.

But for many of you, whether thinking about DCD or your own life, I bet you recognize the way meaning is present in the life of your children and the

—Mary Oliver life of the school when I discuss these components of meaning and hold each up to the light. And even on days when you are not dedicating conscious thought to meaning, I’m guessing you still feel its presence in your life.

Meaning is critical to us meeting our goals as a school, and we incorporate— both by design and by intuition—the pillars of meaning into the fabric of our community.

We will have done this well if our alumni can answer each of these questions in the affirmative, as each question is tied to a pillar of a meaningful life: • Do you have groups you value to which you feel you belong?

• Do you feel a sense of purpose in your activities and work?

• Are you able to create a narrative to make sense of the events in your life and in the world?

• Do you feel a sense of awe at times and find moments of transcendence in our beautiful world?

I hope that what I’ve said resonates with you, since I have found our strong sense of meaning to be one of the very true things about DCD. If you are interested in learning more about the topic, the author Emily Esfahani Smith is coming to DCD in April as part of our speaker series, and she’ll talk about her research on meaning and her new book. But for now, I encourage you to notice—throughout the school year—the ways we help children and ourselves live lives of meaning through belonging, purpose, storytelling, and awe. When we teach kids to expect meaning —to seek it at any age in life—we are helping them lay the foundation for lives of connection, contribution, and meaning in the future.

I want to close tonight by reading Mary Oliver’s recent poem, A Voice From I Don’t Know Where. In it, she addresses the various pillars of meaning (see poem above).

ClosingExercises Address to the Class of 2017

A

small boy of three years with brown hair that lay against his forehead kneeled on a couch. His small arms hung over the back of it.

The reflections of orange blobs of light shone in his curious eyes. He gazed between the dancing, waving giants outside. The boy lived at 256 Highland Street, judging by the sign next to the window. The sun was setting now, and he watched the amber rays of sunlight slowly dissipate over a white house.

All of my memories were hazy.

Those orange lights were the lights of DCD. I just didn’t know it then.

Twelve years later, I stand before you giving this speech. In my decade at DCD, I, along with my classmates, have watched the school grow and change. In kindergarten, we

played on a small wooden train that is pictured in the front lobby. Inside the kindergarten classroom, there was a yellow water table and silver slide going down from the upper level to the lower. The big toy was demolished when we were in fifth grade and replaced with the new playground.

When we were in first grade, the giant willow trees that had shaded our games for so long had to be cut down. They remind me of a line from A Separate Peace. “This was the tree, and it seemed to me standing there to resemble those men, the giants of your childhood, whom you encounter years later and find that they are not merely smaller in relation to your growth, but that they are absolutely smaller, shrunken by age. In this double demotion the old giants have become pigmies while you were looking the other way.”

We have grown since kindergarten.

One thing that has stayed the same is the atmosphere at DCD. It’s our second home. It doesn’t matter if we’ve been here for ten years or one.

It’s our home. My classmates are my family members. The bond between my friends and me at DCD is very, very easy to describe. We’re a crazy, slightly dysfunctional, messy, and very, very loud family.

This community was something that I had always heard mentioned in speeches but had never fully realized until my first trip; the museum of science overnight. The best part of that trip were my friends. We grew closer during that 24-hour period. The pranks that we pulled on one another

are things that we will all remember.

My later trips reinforced this sense of family at DCD, though, for me, it was most apparent during our final trip to Washington, D.C. My classmates, teachers, and I not only roomed together; we lived together.

This was a bit of an adjustment. Don’t get me wrong, I love my classmates and teachers, but having my English, science, history, or math teacher wake me up at 6:00 a.m. was a bit different.

DCD’s community has been something that I will remember.

We’ve been through a lot as a community, both in eighth grade and the larger DCD community. Our family is here to support us. Our classmates see us at our best and at our worst, and our friends are here for us for when we’re either. Over the summer, the soon-to- be-eighth graders received a letter from Ms. Webster. It included a Ted Talk about a volunteer firefighter. In her letter, she explained her hopes for us. Here’s an excerpt: “…it will feel different being in your final year at DCD, and your leadership role will be more pronounced because you are ‘at the top.’ Now before “leadership” begins to sound like something too grand, let

me define how I’m using the word. By leadership, I’m simply referring to the regular actions you each take — large or small — to make DCD a great place for students and adults. I love Mark’s story, since it reminds us all of how simple it is to lead through small acts of kindness and generosity. From what I’ve learned about your class, you will be able to focus on larger ways to lead — and also be able to set a tone across the school through your small actions.”

We did become role models this year, both for our little buddies and for the entire school. This year, though, was our last year being the oldest.

Writing this was hard. I had to confront something foreign. It was the thought that I wasn’t going to be at DCD next year. I’ve known that this change was inevitable. The moment I started at DCD, my time here was destined to end. Even though this chapter of my time at DCD is ending,

a new chapter is just beginning. We’ll join a new DCD community: the DCD alumni. My classmates and I will join the communities of our new schools.

The magnitude of this change began sinking in on a basic level when I participated in activities that I had seen eighth graders involved in many times.

However, I didn’t fully absorb it until right now. I’ve lived next to DCD for 14 and a half years. Sometimes, I’m asked if I like living next to school. I normally have a few answers. Yes, I love living next to school. It’s great if I forget something because I can just run home.

It makes coming up for a reason of why I was fifteen minutes late somewhat difficult, though. Also, the threat: “I know where you live” has no effect on me. On a more serious note, I love living next to school because I’m closer to an incredible community. I’ll miss it next year, but I won’t be far away.

PE teacher Elaine Gage, who was chosen by the class to be their Faculty Speaker, used examples from her own life to encourage students, saying, “I hope what you will take with you as you leave DCD is an ‘I’ll try’ and an ‘I Can’ attitude.

When something is difficult, remember— the more you do it, the better you will get at it.”

hristine Freyermuth has been a DCD parent since 2014. Christine is a partner in the Boston office of PwC, a multinational professional services firm.

With over 24 years of experience, Christine provides expertise and consulting advice to her clients in the health care, life sciences, and higher education sectors. She holds a B.S. in Accountancy and an M.B.A., both from Bentley University.

Christine has served on the DCD Finance Committee since 2016 and the Community Outreach Committee since 2014. Christine and her husband Jeff have been Annual Fund Ambassadors and Class Parents. The Freyermuths live in Needham with their four children, Grace (grade 7), Emma (grade 6), Audrey (grade 4) and Jack (kindergarten).

Leaving a Musical Legacy

T

he annual year-end family and friends string ensemble performances were bittersweet this year, as DCD bid a fond farewell to Chris Nicholas, who retired in June after 32 years of teaching music at DCD. Chris started teaching at DCD in 1985, when Jim Bower was headmaster, and Ruth Ann Dillon was music director. It was Ruth Ann who asked her to begin a strings program at DCD. Her part-time job became a very full-time one when she assumed the music coordinator position for DCD’s Private Music Program in 1999.

In that role, she had the heroic task of matching teachers with young musicians and helping to navigate busy family schedules in arranging lessons as well as being the lead strings teacher and directing both the lower school and middle school ensembles.

A number of the students performing in the strings concert this year had started playing the violin with her in kindergarten. Seeing and hearing them perform on stage was clearly moving for Chris as she played along with them for one last time on the DCD stage.

Addressing the students in the audience, Chris spoke of the importance of pursuing a passion in life, whether it be music, art, drama, or a sport. Her passion for music, she told them, brought her so much joy and connection with others, many of whom, she said, have become some of her closest friends. A few days later, she returned to DCD with some of those friends to treat the whole school to a beautiful concert by her chamber group, the Blue Hills Chamber Players.

After spending much of the summer traveling and unpacking from her move from Dedham to Quincy, she looks forward to having more time with her grandchildren and continuing to teach her adult students. She is still active in the Brockton Symphony, along with continuing to play with the Blue Hills Chamber Players with her dear friend, Susan Kenney, her fellow DCD strings teacher who also retired this year after 17 years.

She and Susan will be dearly missed by the DCD community and especially by the large cohort of young string players to whom they passed along a lifelong love of music.

A

number of departing faculty members were recognized at Closing Exercises held on June 7: Julia Cavan departed after a year in which she took over fifth-grade teaching responsibilities following the death of Mimi Harrington.

Fiona Edwards left her position as front office manager and admissions assistant to pursue further graduate studies in California.

George Silvestri retired after 19 years as director of technology. Over those years, he saw incredible changes take place in the field and worked to keep DCD ahead of the curve in adopting the latest technological tools for both students and faculty. He started the middle school laptop program long before most other schools had and taught an array of middle school arts electives, including one called “Digital Darkroom,” that challenged students to think outside the box. Calling his students “digital natives,” he used technology to introduce them to a new and expanding world of knowledge.

Other faculty whose departures were recognized were Richard Dana, Becky King, and Fred McPhee. All will be missed.

What does your digital footprint say about you?

Conversations around identity are important as we collaborate and interact with one another in the digital world with authenticity. Do our actions on our iPads and laptops reflect our authentic selves? What do others learn about us when they look at our digital footprints?

As parents and teachers, it is so important that we model positive digital citizenship in our own lives. We can use technology with students, share our own digital footprints with our families, and engage in conversations around technology topics with one another. Not only does it provide a rare opportunity to pause and reflect, but it also empowers our children to be positive digital citizens, belonging to something bigger than themselves.

ere at DCD and around the country, students and teachers celebrated Digital Citizenship Week October 16 to 20. We spent the month of October discussing and considering how we can be better digital citizens and build positive digital footprints.

My favorite part of Digital Citizenship Week was visiting classrooms in each grade to help students and teachers begin building digital portfolios. Our digital portfolios are places online where we are documenting, reflecting, and publishing our “moments of pride.”

For our youngest students, this may simply mean loading moments of pride and kindness into a Google Drive folder that is shared with teachers and parents.

In grades three through five, students begin taking ownership over their portfolios by decorating Google Slides and reflecting upon their portfolio entries. By middle school, students get creative, designing their own personal Google Slides or Sites to display their positive footprints. The end result is a collection of pride and the development of positive digital citizenship habits.

In these conversations around the school, we also asked some big questions: What does it mean to be a digital citizen? At our assembly about digital citizenship, one of our students defined citizenship as “belonging to something bigger

than ourselves.” I absolutely love that definition, because it allows us to think about how we can use technology to belong to something bigger. How can we use technology be true and kind to others? How can we use technology to help other people?

How can we be safe when we are using digital tools? We practice two very important rules around technology: 1) Our devices are learning tools, and 2) Online = Offline. Both of these rules remind us that we want to practice safe and positive behavior in all aspects of our lives.

How can we build positive digital footprints? Even at the youngest age, we can help students collect moments of pride, kindness, and celebration in our digital portfolios.

And there are plenty of authentic audiences for sharing our portfolios - from teachers and classmates inside the school walls, to family and friends outside the school. Developing positive

Middle School Arts Celebrated: Year-End Performances and Visual Arts Fill the Lowell Center with Sights and Sounds The Let’s Dance students treated the audience to a sample of the creative choreography they’d worked on during the term with Ms. Sidoli.

Students presented a selection of visual art projects in woodworking, pottery, photography, and floor-cloth painting, sharing their artistic journeys and lessons learned through the creative process.

One student even noted that though his pottery piece was actual a collection of mistakes, the end result was something he was proud of, not only for its beauty but also because of what it represented for him in terms of problem solving and learning.

Mrs. Glaser’s middle school chorus wrapped up the concert with a wonderful Disney medley with impressive solos by a number of students.

Reflections on the Making of a Chair

I

’ve had a long time to reflect on my years in the woodshop and making my chair. There is a feeling that is very hard to describe. That feeling is when you sit on what you made or use it. Knowing that you made something that will last for a long time makes you feel accomplished, yet insignificant. You have built a legacy piece, one that might be here longer than you.

I am surrounded by what I make. I use it or see it every day. I’ve grown to appreciate pieces with looks and function. This chair is a good example.

I’ve done my homework in it, but it also looks nice in my room.

Being surrounded by what I make has helped me to see “the process.”

he Middle School Visual and Performing Arts Assembly is a favorite year-end tradition that gives our middle school students the opportunity to showcase their creativity whether on the stage, in the computer lab, woodshop, or in one of DCD’s art studios.

Held on May 23 this year, the assembly featured a wide array of artistic undertakings. Under the direction of Duane Claussen, the middle school band opened up the assembly with some jazz standards and successfully executed Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World.”

The chamber ensemble took to the stage with Ms. Nicholas and Mrs. Kenney to exhibit their mastery of strings with pieces from Bach and Holst.

As I look at everything that I’ve made, I can tell you exactly how I made it. I can break it down, pieceby-piece, in my mind. I can visualize how everything goes together. I know my pieces on a level that can only be achieved through a craftsman and his work.

The build process for my Shaker chair has been complicated compared to, say, a rustic bench. Rustic bench is a “let-the-piece-dictate-where-things-go” process. This is different. I had to be exact in my measurements, especially in the undercarriage. But the hard work—in Friday sessions, study halls, and recesses—all paid off.

So, as it sit here, I can only wonder what will happen to this chair in the

future. Where it will go? Where I will go? I know, though, that it will always bring back memories of DCD and the DCD woodshop. In 10, 20, or 30 or more years, I’ll see my chair and think, “hey, I remember how I made that.”

Even though my chair is done, my time in the woodshop isn’t. I still have a rustic bench and a carving to finish.

If you need me, you know where I’ll be: either in my chair, or, even better, in my chair in the woodshop.

On Campus DCD Connects:

Dr. Jill Walsh on Social Media and Adolescence

O

n Thursday, November 17, DCD hosted the first event in its DCD Connects series.

Throughout the year, the school will host distinguished experts, screen films, and encourage discussion among parents, teachers, and administrators.

The goal is to explore tools and strategies for navigating our complex world and enhancing the well-being of our schoolaged children.

Dr. Jill Walsh, social media and wellness consultant and Boston University professor, spoke about “A Digital Coming of Age: Childhood and Adolescence in the Social Media Era.” Everyone in the room, whether a parent, teacher, or administrator, agreed that her talk was one of the most useful they had heard on this topic, many scribbling down her ideas, strategies, and resource recommendations.

It is likely that in most homes with adolescents and young adults, there is disagreement about technology use, be it video gaming, social media, or watching endless YouTube videos. Many parents in the room were seeking suggestions for ways to manage this conflict and to deal with children who seem to be addicted to their phones. Dr. Walsh presented her research-based perspective for adults on “the device” and screen time. While she

acknowledged the negative consequences of our children’s constant connection to their screens, her message was one of acknowledgment and acceptance. “It’s not the device they are connected to,” Dr. Walsh said, “it’s their friends, and they are only doing what adolescents have been doing all along—hanging out, connecting, and figuring out where they fit in. They are just using a different platform.”

Social media, she said, is about human connection and social interaction, building relationships, and developing one’s own identity. In today’s children’s over-scheduled lives, this connection is happening in a digital rather than

you following on YouTube? What do you love about the person or the video you are watching? Why do you love a particular video game? What kind of characteristics are they choosing for their personas? Do you ever see friends getting muted or blocked? Chances are you will learn a lot more about what is happening behind the scenes with questions like these, and you will better understand your child as a result.

Dr. Walsh also identified danger signs and strategies for dealing with challenging situations as they arise. She is often asked, “when is it appropriate to give my child a phone?” Her answer to this is always, “Only when you and your child are ready to have a conversation, which by the way, might not be until they are 25!”

These conversations, she says, should address how to handle the confrontations that can take place on social media, the requests children might get to send and receive inappropriate images, and likely exposure to inappropriate behaviors and language. Readiness is highly dependent on the willingness of parents to establish boundaries, the maturity of children to accept those boundaries, and the discipline of parents to model the behavior we want to see in their children.

In her research, Dr. Walsh spends much of her time talking with teens and adolescents, observing behavior, and using the most up-to-date apps and technologies herself to develop a deep understanding of their functions. Hearing about her experience with tech and her research with young people, parents learned some new online vocabulary and gained a greater understanding of the digital landscape in which our children are living.

physical space because they need that flexibility. They are doing what they need to do in their journey to becoming independent adults. Developments in apps and technology facilitate this journey in a more efficient and ubiquitous way than what was available in the past, she explained.

Dr. Walsh believes that the conversation between children and parents regarding technology can be more fruitful and open with this perspective as a starting point. There are undeniable dangers in the digital space, she said, but to help our children navigate through these, some open conversations must take place. If as parents we recognize why children are engaging with tech, they will be more receptive to having these important talks.

The Art of Science: Lisa Houck Transforms Solar Event into Art

L

isa Houck, artist and DCD middle school arts teacher, was in Madras, Oregon, on August 21, in the path of the total eclipse, and she shared her experience with a packed morning assembly of students and fellow teachers earlier in the fall. Lisa was able to experience “Totality” firsthand for a full two minutes. Traveling to visit friends and family in the area, she timed her trip so she could be one of the millions of people looking up at the sky on this historical day.

At the assembly, she showed some spectacular photographs that were taken by her friends, Matt and George, who had set up several cameras to be able to follow and capture the sun. With the aid of the coelostat that her friend George built, they were able to view the sun as it became eclipsed by the moon. Lisa explained to the audience that a coelostat is a special piece of equipment, with a rotating mirror that continuously reflects the light from the same area of the sky so you can see celestial objects.

With her special glasses on, she watched the moon move in front of the sun, nibbling away at its light until the moment of Totality. The beautiful effects of the solar flare showed up as red around the edges of the moon.

The Baily’s beads of sunlight that showed through in some places were awe-inspiring to the students and faculty gathered in the Lowell Center. Named after Francis Baily, who explained the effect in 1836, the beads are the result of valleys and depressions on the moon.

There was a chorus of “oohs and ahs” as Lisa cycled through her slides!

“The temperature went down, it was totally dark, and the birds seemed

definitely confused,” Lisa explained. As an artist, Lisa finds inspiration in many places, and this celestial event proved quite bountiful on that front! After returning home, she completed two new works of art, “Unusual Light Before the Eclipse” and “A Calm Moment After the Eclipse,” below, reflecting her experience as both an observer and an artist.

SportsRoundup Spring 2017 Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse

The varsity girls’ lacrosse team consisted of fourteen players, thirteen eighth graders and one seventh grader. Four of the eighth graders were new to lacrosse: Kathryn, Lexie, Taylor, and Aleesa. Thank you to the captains, Alex and Morgan. A big shout out to Jayne, the only seventh grader who was like a rocket on the team. She is a tireless athlete and knows how to take it to net! We will be counting on her as the only returning player next year. The team showed improvement throughout the season, winning our last five games. We ended the season with a record of 8 wins and 3 losses. A highlight was our 10-9 win against Derby after suffering two losses. We won the next four games to finish strong. About half our goals came with an assist, and we out scored our opponents 107 to 73.—Deb White

Girls’ JV Lacrosse

The girls’ JV lacrosse had a strong season finishing with a 6-3 record. After falling to a tough Thayer squad, the team rallied together and finished up the season with a five-game winning streak. Highlights of the season include our overtime victory over Shore and rebounding from an early season loss to defeat Fay in the last game of the season. This year we had sixteen members of the team. The most improved player this season was Halden Dyer, who picked up a stick for the first time this spring and quickly became one of our most dangerous players on the field. The Coach’s Award went to Megan Fuqua for her willingness to put the team first and step into the goal for many of our games this season.

Boys’ Lacrosse The boys’ lacrosse team, made up of thirteen sixth graders and one seventh grader, compiled a record of 6 wins and 4 losses this spring.

Coaches Kevin Coakley and Bob Santry enjoyed working with the squad and witnessed tremendous improvement as the season progressed. The boys evolved from a team that relied on one-on-one offense to one that moved the ball, moved without the ball, and saw the field remarkably well for their age. Welldeserved recognition went to Kerr Sjostrom Cam O’Rourke who each received MIP awards for their excellent effort and contribution to the defense/midfield and attack, respectively. Brody Upton received the Coaches’ Award. —Bob Santry

Baseball DCD’s 2017 baseball program was made up of eighteen middle school boys. The team practiced together on non-game days, but split into two groups for games. It was a very successful season as the boys learned a great deal about baseball, improved their skills, learned new strategies, and had a ton of fun. A 1-0 win against Tenacre and a 5-4 win against Brimmer and May were highlights. The team finished with a record of 4-8. The coaches look forward to coaching many of the boys next spring and wish the best of luck to those boys moving on next year.—Dan Balk

changes and lots of changes to our roster. The girls impressed the coaching staff with their willingness to learn, try new things, and work at skills with lots of practice. On top of the regular hitting and throwing skills the players learned bunting, sliding, and good baserunning practices. All of these skills played a big role in our successful season. Highlights included a comeback win over Derby, a redemption win over Newton Country Day, a walk-off win against Milton Academy and a really well-played and hard-fought win over Meadowbrook. The team outscored their opponents 102-73. Great work on a very successful season! —Michelle Salfity

Tennis DCD’s tennis team had a successful season.

Led by captains Matthew O’Rourke and Oliver Riordan, along with eighth graders Mike Giordano, Isabella Joseph, Noah McFarlane, and Sergei Tourian, the team finished with an overall record of 4-4-2. Highlights of the season included victories over Nobles, Thayer, Beaver, and Shady Hill. Strong individual singles play from Nick Strymish, Chris Ahn, and Corey Predella, combined with consistent and steady doubles play from Eli Gow, Maeve Haggerty, and Adam Tabba, kept our team competitive in every match. Each player worked hard in practice on all facets of the game, whether on serving, net play, ground strokes, or volleys.—Mark Jackson

he new mosaic that welcomes visitors to DCD’s front lobby is made up of symbols and images designed by the graduates of the Class of 2017. Woven together with glass tile by artist and DCD art teacher Lisa Houck, the mosaic helps set an inclusive tone for those entering the building. As the inscription notes, “the mosaic is a welcoming celebration of many different parts coming together as one.”

Like so much of what works well in our school, the mosaic was the product of a group effort. Conceptualized and funded by 8th grade parents, designed with images from students, created by one of our art teachers, supported by the school leadership, and installed by our facilities department (no small feat!), it embodies the central role of collaboration in DCD’s culture.

This commitment to working together permeates our classrooms, athletic fields, art studios, and the efforts of our Advancement Office. Throughout the past year, we sought to create opportunities to strengthen our connections with each other, with our alumni, with our local community, with prospective parents, and with the broader educational world.

Details of many of these activities are sprinkled throughout this issue of The Bulletin.

On the development side, the Annual Fund reached its goal of $620,000 with extraordinary participation rates from current parents and faculty/staff—remarkably, it was the seventh year in a row that faculty and staff participation reached 100 percent, and the eighth year in a row that parent participation was 97 percent or higher. These levels of support speak volumes about the engagement of our community and belief in DCD’s mission.

The Annual Fund provides critical operating funds that help close the “gap” between tuition revenue and the actual cost of educating a DCD student. Yet, like the mosaic, it also embodies our collaborative spirit. Under the leadership of parent Chair Stuart Nagode, 43 current parents or couples served as Annual Fund Ambassadors, taking time to reach out to every DCD family to talk about the importance of annual giving.

Graduating students also helped enhanced our campus this year, including a new lobby monitor donated by the Class of 2016, and a stocked lobby bookshelf donated by the Class of 2017!

We deeply appreciate the contributions, both tangible and intangible, that so many of you make to strengthening DCD, and look forward to working with all of you in the year ahead.

It has been an honor to serve as Chair of the DCD Annual Fund for 2016–17. For me, this was truly a labor of love, as I am a firm believer in the DCD model of a balanced, Pre-K-8 program with strong arts, academics, athletics, and community service.

The Annual Fund is a critical component of DCD’s annual operating budget and supports all aspects of our children’s experiences during the current school year, from the incredible field trips to eye-popping science projects to the vans that take our kids to sports competitions and even the lights and heat that make the building comfortable.

I’d also like to acknowledge the Annual Fund Ambassadors (listed on the facing page)—fellow parents who devote their time and energy to building support for the Annual Fund, without whom we could not have achieved such impressive results. As I turn the page on our family’s DCD experience (our youngest child just graduated in the spring), I look forward to staying in touch with you and the school, and wish the best to my successors, Ashley and Linda Shih, who will be outstanding stewards of the Annual Fund!

May 12 Spring Fundraiser “Learning Is a Way of Life” Photographs by Kristie Gillooly Dean ’02 The entire DCD community—parents, alumni, parents of alumni, and friends—gathered on May 12 at the MIT Endicott House for a special evening to celebrate Allison Webster as our 8th Head of School. The school motto, Learning Is a Way of Life, set the tone for the evening’s activities with live and silent auctions focused on raising funds for faculty professional development. Board of Trustees President Sheila Hiatt introduced Allison Webster.

Woodworking teacher Gerry Clifford shared his experiences studying both here and abroad on professional development grants and described how they have enriched both his and his students’ experiences in the woodshop. Steven Perry ’85 and Matt Hiatt inserted some hilarity into the event during their time serving as auctioneers for the live auction. A “Giving Tree” rounded out the evening with opportunities to make cash donations. Allison Webster was presented with a copy of the book, The Giving Tree, as a memento, which was signed by students. The evening raised $44,549.

AnnualReport Donor Profile: Many People, One Purpose: Co-Chairs Ashley and Linda Shih Share Inspiration Behind This Year’s Annual Fund Theme

A

shley and Linda Shih are heading up this year’s Annual Fund campaign.

The theme, Many People, One Purpose, reflects their experiences as parents of four children who have attended DCD: Emily and Amanda, who graduated in 2017; Caroline, now in fifth grade; and David, who is in first.

After nine years as DCD parents, they say it’s been a truly remarkable experience. DCD has become a second home, their children’s classmates a second family. Speaking of their eldest, Amanda and Emily, Linda says, “They have developed into confident, selfaware young adults, and much of that can be attributed to what goes on in school.

“School in not just a place where our kids go to learn and come home every day; it’s an extended part of our lives. They spend more time at school than at home. If you think of it with that perspective, you see how important it is. What happens at school plays a large part in how they come out.”

Linda, who has volunteered over the years in the library, on the PA board, and on the community outreach committee, says volunteering is a great way to get to know other parents and also to see the program up close. “I like to give when I can. I did it originally because I wanted to see what was going on, but then realized how much I get out of it. It’s a two-way street. I’m

For the Shihs, the richness of the program at DCD and how it has

Andrew Janjigian ‘84 What kind of a job can you find with backgrounds in literature and biology? Why a job at America’s Test Kitchen (ATK), of course, publishers of Cook’s Illustrated magazine. Having worked in restaurants while in college and later as an organic chemist, Andrew Janjigian ’84 has the perfect resume for a company known for its exhaustive testing of recipes and products. After seeing Andrew mentioned in a Boston Globe article about ATK’s recent move to the Seaport District, we asked him if he wouldn’t mind filling us in on what’s been going on in his life since graduating from DCD. Now a senior editor at the magazine, his passion for cooking began at home, where eating and cooking played a central role in family life. (His mother, JoAnn Janjigian, a former trustee, was known for her cooking skills, and brother Dan ’96 is a chef; Sara Janjigian Trifiro ’87 owns her own marketing company.)

Tell us about your experience at DCD, any favorite teachers, best subjects, special memories DCD was a long time ago, and I was only there for three years, but I do remember it fondly. I appreciated that we were given the opportunity to study Latin at an early age (I’m sure that stood me well in my subsequent study of French and Italian, as well as my love of language and literature in general), and that we studied the Facing History curriculum in 6th grade. Oh, and thanks to Mr. Pierce, I can still recite the names of all the presidents in order in under a minute (though I refuse to add the current one to that list).

Where did you go to school after DCD? Belmont Hill for a year, then Noble & Greenough and Columbia University.

What did you study in college?

Comparative Literature, with a focus on French and Film Studies.

How did you end up at ATK? I took a somewhat circuitous route to my job at Cooks Illustrated. At Columbia, I worked in restaurants nights and weekends, first waiting tables, then moving into the kitchen, thanks to an aptitude and passion for cooking. After I graduated, I remained in NYC and stayed in cooking, eventually working my way up to a sous chef position.

A few years later, I decided to go back to school in the sciences, and began a postgraduate Pre-Med program at Harvard.

While there, I landed a paid internship at Genzyme, as an organic chemist. I was eventually hired full-time, and was there for 12 years. (While there, I finished a master’s in biology at the Harvard Extension School, with a focus on mycology.)

I found my way to ATK because I met someone in passing who worked there, and she encouraged me to apply, knowing about my background in food and science. I like to joke that I had the perfect resume for a job at ATK, and that I can’t ever leave there, because there is nowhere else that would fit my strange combination of career moves.

How long have you been at ATK? 8 years.

What do you like best about your job?

Does your Armenian background play a role in your cooking?

My colleagues. The job is loads of fun, mainly because we all really love what we do, and because it is truly a collaborative effort.

Armenians love to eat and to cook, so yes. More specifically, I’ve recently begun to explore the breads of Armenia and the surrounding region, and teach a class I call “The Roots of Pizza,” with a focus on topped flatbreads that are the progenitors of pizza.

What’s your favorite dish, to make, to eat?

My specialty is bread, and I do about two thirds of the bread and pizza recipes for the magazine. Bread is definitely a passion (I also teach bread baking classes at a few venues, including King Arthur Flour in Vermont.) Right now, however, I’m pretty enamored of Chinese cooking, Sichuan in particular.

I’ve heard that your mother is a great cook, and your brother is also a chef, so cooking runs in the family. Is this how you became interested in doing it for a living?

How is it working at the Seaport?

I love it there. It’s a very cool neighborhood architecturally, and it is changing fast, so I am looking forward to seeing how it transforms over the coming years.

Do you have any other interests? Photography?

Food and cooking have always been a big part of my family life, and no doubt it inspired me to pursue it.

Yes, I recently rediscovered a passion for photography, with a focus on portraiture.

embers of DCD’s Class of 2013 gathered around the DCD pool on August 15 for a chance to reconnect with each other and some DCD faculty, before heading off to college or their next adventures.

They reminisced, ate pizza and watermelon, and talked about the future on a warm summer night at the school’s second annual “college send-off.” While some are getting ready to head off to colleges, including Ithaca, Brown, Dartmouth, Connecticut College, and

CD 2017 Alumni Award recipient Monique Tello ’86, a doctor and writer, visited campus on November 30 to speak at an all-school morning assembly.

Dr. Tello has combined an accomplished medical career as a primary care physician with a lifelong passion for writing. She now writes for the Harvard Health publications blog, in addition to working as a primary care provider at Women’s Health Associates, a practice of women for women at Mass General, and serving as a clinical instructor at Harvard Medical School.

She talked to students about her experience at DCD, how enriched the program was compared with the public elementary school she had been attending in Dedham. She credited the many opportunities she had at DCD with broadening her perspective later on in life to be able to take on challenges of playing so many different roles as mother, doctor, writer, and animal advocate.

Noting that although she was not a very good student in science and math at DCD yet was still eventually able to go to medical school and become a doctor, she encouraged students to be open to many possibilities in their ultimate choice of career.

Her talk prompted a lively question and answer session that ran the gamut from the youngest asking “What kind of cat do you have?” to a middle school student asking “What made you decide to become a doctor?”

Sara Hagan Parker’93 and her husband Jason welcomed Vivian Scott Parker to their family three days early on Friday, November 24. She weighed 7 lbs. 13 oz., and was 19.5 inches long.

Meaghan Milmoe Ward ’98 writes, “My husband Matt and I would like to introduce our daughter,

Viviana (“Vivi”) Weissenborn Gordon was born on June 24, 2017. Vivi is the daughter of Odile Weissenborn Gordon ’84 and granddaughter of Dr. Luisa Stigol, who was once DCD’s school doctor.

Alyse Marjorie Ward was born on September 6, 2017, to proud parents Meaghan Milmoe Ward ’98 and her husband Matt. Alyse weighed 5 lbs. and was 18 inches long.

Alyse! She showed up two weeks early and we are all adjusting well.

We are currently living in Kingston, Massachusetts, and I am working as a speech-language pathologist in the Bridgewater-Raynham regional school district. We are excited to bring Alyse to the DCD Fairs and to show her the beautiful school!”

2000s Myles Bowen ’05 completed a master’s degree and certificate of advanced graduate study in school psychology last spring and is now working as a school psychologist in the Brockton public school system. He also coaches basketball for the Academy of the Pacific Rim, a charter school in Boston.

Lily Bowen ’07 is working in public relations at Ropes & Gray law firm in Boston. Two of her poems were included in the anthology Inheriting the War: Poetry and Prose by Descendants of Vietnam Veterans and Refugees published in 2017 by W.W. Norton & Company, Inc.

Peter O’Marah ’07 is studying electronic music design at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Erin McKay ’13, a student at Northeastern University, is spending her freshman semester abroad in Berlin, Germany, on a CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange) program.

It’s come full circle for Elaine Gage — having a former student coach her son! Ben White ’05 coached DCD third grader Patrick Gage, pictured here with his mom, DCD PE teacher Elaine Gage, in the Dedham Summer Youth Baseball League. The Dedham 8’s went to the New England Regionals this summer and were runner-ups. They played against teams from Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

Alumni Spotted at Thanksgiving

Svenja O’Marah ’13 is a student at Norfolk County Agricultural High School, where her studies are focused on animals. She wants to be a groomer.

Morgan Kendall ’17, Alex Burmeister ’17, and Kathryn Cloonan ’17, currently students at Noble and Greenough School, competed as a relay team in the Dover-Sherborn Boosters Triathlon. Their combined time of 1:32:23 placed them ninth out of 20 relay teams. The sprint-distance triathlon includes a .25-mile swim, a 14-mile bike ride and a 3.4-mile run.

They were all smiles after the race!

Virginia (“Gigi”) Chase Nichols was born on August 21, 2017, to DCD Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Affairs, Kate Nichols, and her husband Vince. Gigi weighed 6 lbs. 1.5 oz. and was 20 inches long.

Pete Rapelye (1997–2003) writes, “After visiting our nephew at University of St. Andrew’s this past October, Janet and I spent a week in London visiting twelve independent schools in London on behalf of Princeton University. This included a gathering of Tiger alums at the English Speaking Union in London.

I continue to serve on the boards of three independent schools and teach part-time in retirement. Fond memories of DCD.”

Bill Youngs (1963–1965) writes, “About 55 years after teaching composition to 5th and 6th graders at DCD, I am still using writing pedagogy skills I learned at DCD to teach my university students at Eastern Washington how to write history.”

DCD middle school history teacher, coach, and advisor Dan Balk married Elise Irish at the Fort William Henry Hotel in Lake George, New York, on July 7, 2017. The couple honeymooned in San Diego, California.
