Head’s Report Intelligence vs. Character: The EQ/IQ Debate by Nick Thacher The following remarks were excerpted from a longer address to the Annual Meeting of the DCD Corporation on October 22, 2015.

L

ong ago, in a distant galaxy— Southern California, to be precise—I went to high school on the bucolic campus where my father had spent his life as a child, a student, a teacher, and a Headmaster. My father never actually taught me, though he did serve as my freshman soccer coach.

This was in the 1950s, when the role of fathers, at least stereotypically, was more distant than it is today. There was one memorable occasion when my father sought me out—at home—and said he’d like to discuss something with me. Uh oh. Spider sense tingling, I sat down in a deep living room chair, wondering, waiting. The pendulum in our grandfather clock resonated in the living room.

“You know,” my father observed, “Ralph Waldo Emerson used to say that character is more important than brains.”

That, in essence, is what I propose to discuss this evening—the importance of character and social skills and what some people describe as “EQ” (Emotional Intelligence) as opposed to IQ, which needs no explanation.

My father didn’t bother to say much else in that conversation, but his rare admonition proved extremely “sticky,” resonating throughout my many years as a student and my subsequent 47 years as an educator. Just last week Ashley Linell set our new Annual Fund brochure on my desk, featuring Aristotle’s well-known assertion,

“Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.”

So let’s begin by examining a single word that is frequently thrown around at DCD: “Community.” When I first stepped onto this campus in December 2004, everyone I met—search committee members, administrators, trustees, teachers, parents, students—extolled the sense of community.

They pointed with pride to events such as “Trim the Gym” and the May Fair, to parent volunteerism, to the evident close and very personal connections between students and their teachers.

Community. Character and brains.

A Child’s-Eye View Last year, as many of you know, DCD joined a coalition of 60 public, private, and parochial schools in a national research project known as the “Caring Schools Initiative.” Based at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education, under the leadership of Dr. Richard Weissbourd (author of the bestselling book The Parents We Mean to Be), the goal of the first year’s research was to support student safety, identify the role of caring and respect, and to develop insights into the moral climate at participating schools.

DCD’s students in Grades 5 through 8 completed several detailed, anonymous Caring Schools Initiative questionnaires and met with Dr. Weissbourd and his colleagues for follow-up focus groups.

What have we learned thus far? When we received the data from our student surveys, we discovered— not surprisingly—several heartening discrepancies between DCD students’ views and those of students in the national sample. And we also learned—again, not surprisingly—that DCD is not the Garden of Eden. For example, 9 percent of our students reported being bullied at least once a week. About 7 percent reported that “Other students told lies about me and tried to make others dislike me.”

EQ and IQ. Would it be fair to claim that DCD has embraced an extraordinarily challenging and broad educational mission, one in which reading and writing and ciphering are seen as pitifully thin objectives when weighed against emotional intelligence, human connectivity, and sound character? Every child matters, we say. Every family matters and makes a difference. Thanks to our current board president, Sheila Hiatt, and her husband Matt, “One Family” became the mantra of our Annual Fund not so long ago.

Head’s Report

once a week…so perhaps we can take some consolation, if not pride, in the fact that our rate of “bullying behavior” is roughly half of the national average.

In the national survey, more than 1 in 4 students (27 percent) reported feeling unsafe emotionally in a variety of contexts around their schools. Here DCD’s results are impressive: in most of the categories the numbers were close to 1 percent.

The area in which the highest proportion of DCD children reported feeling unsafe: was on social media (about 18 percent), hardly breaking news. The next highest?

“Traveling between home and school” at about 4 percent—still quite a low number, but perhaps warranting a look at the causes.

The single most significant finding, at least to my relatively untutored eye, came in our students’ responses to the question, What is most important to you? a) Achieving at a high level? b) Caring about others? c) Happiness (feeling good most of the time)?

This is, of course, the EQ/IQ question. Nationally, the students ranked “achievement” as their highest priority (37 percent), while 35 percent opted for “happiness for themselves.” Just one-quarter most valued “caring.”

By comparison, DCD children ranked “caring” at the top, at 42 percent.

“Happiness” was second at 30 percent, and “achievement” finished third at 26 percent.

A Moral Climate This sent me to a similar question in the survey, this one focused on the children’s views of what the adults at their school most value. The options were not identical, but the conclusion was absolutely the same.

DCD students believe their teachers most value “students who care about others” (EQ): 50 percent gave this response.

“Students who do well academically” (IQ) came in second at 22 percent. Not to diminish the clear value of the arts and athletics, but “students who are good athletes” and “students who are good in

the arts” finished at the bottom of the list, with 2 percent and 1 percent, respectively.

But there was another, open-ended choice: “Other.” And that unleashed a torrent of responses from the children.

Their quite passionate comments strike me as magically illuminating in a school that has historically been so emphatic about valuing community, character, and connectivity. In our students’ eyes, hearts, and minds DCD teachers most value • well-rounded students • students who have a passion for learning • students who put their best efforts into everything they do • everyone who needs caring • everyone.

In response to the question, “Does your school have core values that they expect you to honor?” about half (48 percent) said yes, and 43 percent checked “I’m not sure.” The students then went on to add a sublime, albeit predictable list of what they supposed DCD’s core values to be. “Learning Is a Way 3

Head’s Report of Life” got many references, as did our mission statement, which was laboriously copied in its entirety from a nearby wall by many children. Here are some of their alternate views of our community’s core values: • Inspire. Encourage. Challenge.

• Dream, create, discover.

• Be nice, no cheating, no copying, no bullying.

• Treat others the way you wish to be treated.

• Balance of academics, arts, and athletics.

• Be kind, caring, loyal, friendly, and learn.

• To not cheat, to help others, to do a lot of community service, and to be kind.

• Respecting teachers and peers.

• Welcoming, connected, together.

It turns out, as I think everyone in this room already knows, that DCD is a place where human connectivity, social skills, EQ, and personal communication are highly valued and, to an unusual degree, lived out. Not perfectly, I would be the first to admit. And, there can be no doubt that academic skills, hard work, and rigor are valued—indeed, prized—as highly as “caring.”

at work: regular simple physical activity, moving naturally but not too energetically; a sensible quasi-Mediterranean diet; and, apparently most important, a strong sense of community, family, social connectivity.

We are no longer in the business of preparing happy, healthy, 30-year-olds but, instead, happy, healthy centenarians.

Let’s hear it for social skills and EQ in the curriculum.

And for another angle on the importance of connectivity, Dr. Daniel Aldrich, now at Northeastern University, ten years ago began to investigate what makes hard-hit communities particularly resilient. Dr. Aldrich, then teaching at Tulane, suffered through Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath in New Orleans; and—

Employers Want EQ, Too Let me put the finishing touch on my EQ/IQ argument by referring to a recent working paper from Harvard Graduate School of Education professor David Deming, who has been tracing the correlations between earnings and skills over the past 35 years. Deming’s work basically suggests that insofar as the ever-evolving labor market is concerned, character is more important than brains! To rephrase his conclusions in the jargon of academia, “The labor market is increasingly rewarding social skills—even over the kind of cognitive skills that we often think of as being particularly valuable in an era of big data and expanding technology.”

Mind you, cognitive skills (IQ) are valuable—but not in isolation. Jobs requiring high levels of both cognitive skills and social skills have consistently seen the highest levels of employment and wage growth since 1980.

In Deming’s words, “Cognitive skills are increasingly a necessary but not sufficient condition for obtaining a high-paying job.” Put another way, it’s what computers cannot do (EQ) that employers most want.

“In the workplace, in the world, in sickness and

in health, for richer, for poorer, character is more

important than brains, EQ more important than IQ.”

Researchers Agree Welcoming, connected, together. One family. What does the latest research by the social scientists tell us about the importance of community and connectivity? Dan Buettner’s “Blue Zone” research on human longevity has been highlighted recently on NPR and elsewhere. In case you’re unfamiliar with his work, “Blue Zones” are where the resident human population has the highest proportion of centenarians: communities in Sardinia, Okinawa, and Loma Linda, California. Buettner identifies several obvious and predictable factors 4

intrigued by the strikingly uneven ways in which particular neighborhoods recovered from the flood—in the ensuing decade he has visited numerous locations around the world studying the aftermath of disasters— the 1923 Tokyo earthquake, the 1995 Kobe earthquake, the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami—trying to determine which factors would enable a post-crisis community to bounce back. His conclusion: social capital (human connections), not financial funding, makes the difference. Aldrich notes, “The strength and cohesion of a community before the disaster was one of the best predictors for recovery after.” Let’s hear it for connectivity and a genuine sense of community.

Deming goes on to note that the schools of the future should place value on a “hands-on, immersive learning experience” that “will be an incredibly important advantage for in-person education.” The value proposition that parents and teachers at DCD have traditionally embraced—the emphasis on EQ and connectivity and community that have long characterized our school—is looking better and better.

Longer life! Resiliency in the face of disaster!

Higher-paying jobs! Let’s hear it for “One Family,” social skills, and “character.”

Back to Caring Schools There is one more piece of the Caring Schools research I want to share with you.

I’ve saved it for last because it is, by far, the touchiest topic—but a topic that lies at the heart of every independent school community. It’s money.

Among the questions our students faced on the Caring Schools Initiative questionnaire was this one: Would you prefer to go to a school where students come from families that are:

where everyone was “poor,” whatever that means? 0 How many wanted to attend a school of “average” wealth? 21 percent How many had no preference? 63 percent You can decide how much their responses were informed by IQ and how much by EQ. • Because it doesn’t matter what they have; it matters what they are like.

a) almost all or all rich b) almost all or all average wealth c) almost all or all poor d) about the same number of rich, average, and poor e) I have no preference.

• It doesn’t matter whether or not a family has a lot of money. That doesn’t determine the personality of someone or the way someone acts. It also should not determine if I am friends with this person or not, because that is unfair discrimination.

This question generated by far the largest number of written responses and by far the most passionate language. Clearly our DCD children have particularly powerful feelings about this topic.

• I selected this choice because I think it is good for everyone involved if you can experience interactions with people of all social classes at a young age, because in the outside world not everyone is equal.

How many wanted to go a school where everyone was “rich,” whatever that means? 2 percent

• Because all people (no matter how much money they have) should be treated with the same amount of respect.

How many wanted to go to a school

• To be a good person it doesn’t matter

how much money you have.

• I don’t think it matters how much money you have when going to school, it matters how nice you are to others.

• I don’t think that in a school environment wealth is an important asset.

• I don’t care if my friends take a limo to school or a beaten-up used car. It is about who they are as a person that I value.

• It is the people I want to meet, not their bank accounts.

• Cash does not matter. Personality does.

• Because I believe everyone is equal.

This is DCD’s Declaration of Independence: I believe everyone is equal. I can hear the resonance of the old grandfather clock ticking in the living room.

My dad was right. In the workplace, in the world, in sickness and in health, for richer, for poorer, character is more important than brains, EQ more important than IQ. I am so grateful to have been a part of this remarkable little school community for eleven (going on twelve) years. Armed with the revealed truth of your children, I can’t wait to hit one hundred!

Address to the Class of 2015 By Sarah Leder

I

’m unique, and so is my class. In my opinion, families work together best when they are made up of different types of people who all contribute to the families’ success.

It wouldn’t be interesting if we all knew the same things and shared the same interests. Because our class is so different, I have been lucky to learn so much from each one of my classmates. I’ve learned what a TARDIS is (Kelsey, Molly), and what a plié is (Livia), but most importantly I’ve learned how to respect different opinions.

One of the most important building blocks of a family is trust. I trust my classmates, and have had many opportunities to build this trust over the years. Whether it’s preventing me from falling off of the back of a picnic table in a trust-fall exercise, or helping me hammer a nail into my fragile complex machine, my classmates have always showed me that I have a good reason to trust them. ...These 29 people up on the stage are my family. Not my only family, but one of

them. We’re all different. Some of us love math, or hockey, or Legos, or cooking, or many other things. I don’t think anyone in my class has ever felt that we have had to fit into some kind of mold to be accepted.

In fact, one of my favorite things about DCD, and more specifically my class, is that we accept each other for who we are. The different attributes that make up each one of my classmates come together to build a true, perfect union— a family.

Though I was nervous about this speech, I knew that I could do it. I knew that even if I came up here and completely messed up, no one would judge me. Here at DCD I am never afraid to fail, because at least here, there is nothing to be afraid of. I can only hope that my high school next year will make me feel the same way.

Before I go, I would like to leave you with a quote by Richard Bach: “The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other’s life.”

DCD is a family, and I couldn’t have asked for a better one.

When you hear the name Dr. Seuss, you may immediately think of some of your favorite books when you first started reading.

Remember The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, just to name a few. It was so long ago for all of you, but for many of your parents, especially today, it seems like it was just yesterday. But Dr. Seuss also said something which I hope you will think of when you remember this day and you remember your time at DCD. “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory…”

The Importance of Making Mistakes. It may sound contradictory for your teacher —someone who actually took points off of your assessments Math Teacher Brenda Leith addresses the when you made an error—to graduates on the importance of taking risks. encourage you to go forth and make mistakes, so let me explain what I mean.

Most people view making an error as a negative experience, which it frequently can be. However, you should not allow your fear of making a mistake to prevent you from trying something new or from taking a risk.

The writer James Joyce said, “Mistakes are the portals of discovery.” I couldn’t agree more. It is when you make a mistake that you then have the opportunity to learn something. Sometimes what you learn can be lifechanging.

On Campus Allison D. Webster Named New Head

T

his fall, after a national search lasting several months, the Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Allison D. Webster as DCD’s next Head of School, beginning on July 1, 2016.

The Board’s unanimous decision followed an enthusiastic recommendation by the Head Search Committee, chaired by former Board President Tim Mann.

With 23 years of experience as a teacher, advisor, and administrator, Allison is an exceptional educator and leader with a rich understanding of children, school communities, and the local independent school environment.

She currently serves as assistant head at the Shady Hill School in Cambridge, where she has been involved in all aspects of its Pre-K through 8 academic program since 2006. Prior to taking on that leadership role, she had extensive experience teaching English and social studies, both at Shady Hill and at The Park School in Brookline.

Allison also serves on Shady Hill’s Board of Trustees, and has provided leadership for strategic planning, accreditation and major academic initiatives, including academic technology, STEAM curriculum, program review, and school schedule.

Allison received her B.A. in English (Honors) from Rollins College, a JD from Tulane Law School, a MEd in Teaching and Curriculum from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education, and a Master’s of Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania.

In a letter to the DCD community, Allison wrote, “Dedham Country Day is a school community that fosters a habit of reflection, ensuring that ‘learning is a way of life’ for both the institution and children. I look forward to partnering with all members of the community to begin the next chapter of DCD’s ongoing growth, a new chapter that is rooted in the strengths it has cultivated for over a century and

Allison succeeds Nick Thacher, who has presided over DCD for nearly 12 years and will continue to lead the school until his retirement on June 30, 2016.

CD welcomed four new faculty members this fall.

Kimberly “Kitt” Catlin has joined the faculty as a first grade teacher. Kitt taught kindergarten and second grade at the Park and Glen Urquhart schools. She earned both her BA and MAT from Simmons College and lives in Jamaica Plain.

Beth Nolan Conners, is the new Learning Coordinator. Beth earned her BA at UC Davis, her MEd at Harvard, and her PhD at Boston College. For almost 20 years, she served as a reading and testing specialist and Director of Student Support at the Meadowbrook School. She and her family live in Bolton.

Carla Haith is the new Head of Lower School, DCD’s largest division. A resident of Boston, Carla received her BA from Clark Atlanta University and her MEd from Lesley University. In addition to her administrative role, she is teaching a section of third grade math.

Robert “Bo” Harrington is teaching Latin, history, and math, as well as coaching and assisting with early morning drop-off. A graduate of Nobles and a resident of Dedham, he received his BA in classics from Cornell University and has been teaching classics and history at the Eaglebrook School.

She graduated from Tufts University and received an MBA degree from Georgetown, a master’s degree in real estate finance and development from Columbia, and a law degree from the New England School of Law. Karen is the great, great granddaughter of Facundo Bacardi y Massó, the founder of the rum manufacturer Bacardi & Company, and works in the family business. She and her husband Stephen Fallon live in Milton with their three children, Christiane (Grade 5), Samuel (Grade 2), and Hannah (Kindergarten).

Ilyse Greenberg has been a DCD parent since 2012.

She develops client strategy and research design for Boathouse, Inc., a full-service advertising agency. Prior to Boathouse, Ilyse worked in brand management at Procter & Gamble/Gillette, strategic planning at The Boston Globe/Boston.com, and marketing at TomTom, Inc. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and an MBA from the Kellogg School at Northwestern University. Ilyse served on the Head Search Committee, and is co-chair of the DCD Annual Fund with her husband Charles Rudnick. They have also been Annual Fund Ambassadors and Class Parents.

Ilyse and Charles live in Needham with their two children, Alfie (Grade 8) and Natalie (Grade 5).

Aidan J. Riordan

Aidan Riordan has been a DCD parent since 2012. He is Executive Vice President, Head of Affiliate Management at Old Mutual Asset Management (OMAM), where he is responsible for the oversight and development of its portfolio of Affiliate firms, represents the company on Affiliate Boards, and assists in strategic planning, capital investment, mergers and acquisitions, and new investments. Aidan has over 15 years of experience in private equity and investment banking. He holds a BA in economics from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA in finance from Columbia Business School. He has served on the DCD Finance Committee since 2013. Aidan and his wife Katherine are Annual Fund Ambassadors and Class Parents this year.

They live in Needham and have four children, Oliver (Grade 6), Abigail (Grade 6), Jocelyn (Grade 1) and Hadley (Pre-Kindergarten).

Janine Saint-Louis Retires after 45 Years

hen the earthquake hit Haiti five years ago it hit home quite literally for DCD’s Janine Saint-Louis, wondering if in its wreckage it had destroyed the beautiful home she had known, the schools where she’d studied as a child, or the pharmacy and clinic her family had operated ever since it was founded by one of her ancestors, arriving from France, in 1872.

Janine remembers well the lovely eleven-room house she grew up in, the sound of friends visiting, the exquisite gardens, the servants. It was a place where local and international communities met and the importance of educational opportunity was never taken for granted.

“There were two local schools,” she recalls, “one for the normal people and one for the richer families.”

Janine attended the richer school, the International French School. Knowing what a difference that education made, her family actively intervened, trying to get

needier students admitted, and her father initiated a tutorial program on weekends and summers for the children of their servants and others.

The importance of education was passed down from generation to generation in her family, so too was an emphasis on the importance of rights.

So strong was that commitment that she recalls her grandfather insisted that his sons study law so they would know about their rights before taking up any other profession. Her father would later become a doctor and pharmacist and use his resources to pay for local children to receive tutoring over the summers.

Nothing was taken for granted in the family. Janine remembers being perplexed at school seeing other girls gather under the shade of a hundred-year-old tree to gossip and ostracize other girls. She couldn’t understand it. Seeing younger students at the nursery school left with nothing to do, she volunteered to help

them during her free time instead of joining the other girls.

In school Janine followed her interests in pedagogy and psychology but also took medical classes for work in the pharmacy and clinic. Again, she found innovative ways of helping others, making house calls from the family pharmacy in Port-auPrince to take blood samples from the sick and elderly and bringing medicines back in return.

It was work she enjoyed, allowing her to live with her family in their home near the beach, caring for patients and for the farm animals, whom, like her patients, she knew by name. “Six o’clock when everyone was sleeping, I was out with the cows. I loved it, in the morning, turkeys following me, carrying buckets of food for the animals, big tree birds flying out and starting to sing.”

It was at home from her mother, a woman proud of her French heritage, that she learned all about yarn and knitting

and dyes, the workings of an artistry enriched by her mother’s degree in art, and one which she would eventually pass on to her own students. It was the richness of her heritage, the openness of life that she enjoyed most, but which soon would become a cause of danger with the growing instability brought about by policies of the Duvalier regime.

“My father’s family name was Denizard. We thought it was French but found out it was German in origin when my brother Anthony was travelling and met a woman who showed him a picture of her brother, someone who looked just like him, and told him about the origins of the name in Alsace Lorraine, the French-German borderland the two countries would war over.”

“We all look different in my family.

Some have blue eyes; some have green, some dark. It made it very difficult during the time of the dictator Duvalier and the Tonton Macoute. Duvalier would try to find out the people with darker skin. And I was firm in not dispensing medicine to men from the Tonton Macoute, not even Duvalier himself, who came in demanding it, sometimes even putting the barrel of their guns up against my stomach. They were poor and uneducated, and I told

them they had to bring the sick person in so we would know what was wrong.”

Before long she would find herself on Duvalier’s list of persons not to be allowed to leave the country. Still she had friends; some in the U.S. Embassy whom she had helped teach how to graft orange trees.

After 45 years teaching at DCD, Janine still remembers that day. She remembers, too, many wonderful things about Haiti, the beautiful flowers and plants she grafted, their pink blossoms blooming along the sides of the house by the water, the richness of her heritage, a house that welcomed people from all over the world, the work of the pharmacy and clinic that contributed to the health of the community. But she remembers other things, as well—the man her father saved by giving a transfusion of his own blood, whose wife had refused to swim at a beach with black people, the days of Duvalier and the Tonton Macoute.

In her teaching, her sharing, her time with us, Janine Saint-Louis has been continuing the good work of her family, educating, nurturing, and transfusing us all with a sense of the intricate weave of history.

Janine thanks three people for her escape—Gladys Clarke, an American woman, who would often come to visit her in Port-au-Prince and helped when she arrived in the United States, eventually bringing her to DCD; her cousin, an executive at Pan Am, who arranged to secretly have her board a Pan Am flight; and a former student who would become a secretary to Duvalier and change her name on the flight manifest.

s fall descends on New England, DCD’s garden continues to bear fruit, allowing students to harvest and enjoy freshly grown late-season produce during lunch.

This is the third season for the garden, a gift from the parents of the Class of 2013 that has been giving back in both fresh produce and lessons for the children in garden stewardship.

The garden includes four raised, fenced beds of vegetables. Cold frames are installed in November for the winter season. In its first year, hands-on instruction in planting and maintaining the garden was provided as part of the eighth grade parent gift.

DCD students plant the garden in the spring, and during the summer months, students in the Horizons program spend a good deal of time maintaining it— weeding, watering, and picking whatever is in season. Once school starts in the fall, DCD students are able to avail themselves of the garden’s bounty.

Despite its small size, the garden still has an impact. Head Chef Jack O’Donnell says the children participate in all stages from seed to harvest. “The kids start it as a seed, see it grow, and then get to eat it.”

These lessons are incorporated into the curriculum in various ways. Fourth grade teacher Kelly Kennedy, who chairs the garden committee, says she has taken her class out to harvest and weed, and science teacher Sue Shirley has included visits to the garden as part of her classes.

The garden has produced lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, peas, kale, carrots, radishes, and pumpkins, as well as herbs, such as mint, basil, and parsley.

“We’ve served everything at one time or another,” Jack says.

“You’d need a farm to feed 250 people every day, but we incorporate it into what we normally serve.”

Children also participate in composting, bringing fruit and vegetables left over from lunch to a special bin in the cafeteria whose contents will eventually make its way to the compost heap. “We fill it up so fast. In the springtime, we’ll add that into the garden,” Jack says.

This year, the school is taking part in the national Farm-to-School program. In addition to receiving fresh local produce on a regular basis from its usual supplier, Russo’s of Watertown, Jack says he’s also begun stopping at farms in Millis and Canton to pick up local produce to add to the lunch program.

As far as budget goes, the cost of farm stand produce is roughly the same, he says, and he’s happy to be able to expand the offerings at lunch. “It’s great to have locally grown food; it’s fresher, and it tastes better.” As freshly picked carrots make their way from the DCD garden to be washed and cut and then get gobbled up, it’s clear the children agree.

Spring 2015 Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse

Boys’ Lacrosse

Girls’ varsity lacrosse ended the season with 10 wins and one loss. Games this season were wellfought and competitive with four close games won by only one goal! The team scored a total of 120 goals in 11 games, while keeping opponents to just 78 goals. What impressed me most about this team was their ability to take instruction during time-out and half-time talks and make adjustments. They were also very flexible on the field as I moved them around to create the best match ups, optimize their talents and skills, and give them rest. With only 12 players, they were still able to sustain full 50-minute games without subs. Fourteen different players put on goalie gear during the 11-game season! Highlights of the season include victories over rivals Thayer and Nobles. —Deb White

I am incredibly proud of this team and what they accomplished this season. Despite having only one sub for the season and being pushed to their limits, their efforts never wavered. Even when they were outmatched and outnumbered, they played hard until the final whistle. Every member of this team was invaluable, and contributions came from all quarters. So, instead of giving the traditional awards this year, the entire team received the Coach’s Award. Their names are engraved on a plaque that will be permanently displayed in our trophy case.

Girls’ JV Lacrosse

DCD’s baseball team was comprised of twelve sixth graders, three seventh graders, and four eighth graders. During practice, the team worked on learning strategy and practicing fundamental skills. The boys had a great time learning the game and competing against a number of very strong opponents. Our final record was 4-9-1.

The girls’ JV lacrosse team had an exciting and successful season. They worked hard every single day and enjoyed being out on the field. They were up for a challenge and were excited and willing to do whatever was scheduled for practice on any given day. Our team had an undefeated season this spring, outscoring our opponents 121–48. Everyone on the team scored more than one goal during the season, and in each game, at least six different girls scored. In addition, each girl contributed by playing goalie for at least one half of a game. It was a team effort. Multiple referees commented on their strong passing skills and great sportsmanship. It was a fabulous season for this talented, skilled, and hardworking group of girls. —Lindsay Bababekov

Varsity Softball The softball team enjoyed a tremendous year finishing with a record of 6-3-1. The team bonded well, played hard, and was competitive all year. We had big wins against Fay, Derby, Brimmer and May and some close losses against such powerhouse programs as Dana Hall, Beaver and The Park School. The team steadily

improved, and everyone got better as the year progressed. The combination of experienced eighth graders and the blooming talent of the seventh graders made us a tough team to beat. The future is bright for the DCD softball program. —Fred McPhee

JV Softball The JV girls’ softball team had a season of learning, growth, and improvement. Despite their record of 2-4-1, the girls had many small victories throughout the season. These ranged from learning not to swing at high balls to knowing what base to cover or back up. Just as things started to click, the season came to a close. Tennis The eleven-member DCD tennis team was an energetic and positive group. With four returning players, the new members of the team worked hard on learning the fundamentals of the sport. Practice time, at wimbledon 109 in Walpole, was spent working on groundstrokes, serving, net play, and court strategy. Highlights of the season included hard-fought victories over Nobles and Boston Trinity. Captains Kelsey Boch and Campbell Resnick along with fellow eighth graders Brian Akukwe, Arlo Gow, and Annabel Haggerty did a great job leading and motivating the team. —Mark Jackson

AnnualReport A Message of Thanks

S

ummer is a magical time at DCD, the grounds and halls filled with sunlight, the sounds and voices of campers and Horizons students learning and at play. The energy is contagious and never quite wanes, for each year the smell of fresh paint drying reminds me that though summer may soon be over, a new school year is about to begin.

This fall, we started a little earlier than usual, with many teachers returning to campus in August to take part in iPad training, the kind of targeted teacher training so vital to DCD’s outstanding teaching and academics. Opportunities like these for our faculty, like so many others, could not be offered each year without the financial support and generosity of our DCD community.

Every student and every teacher benefits from this generosity. Gifts to the Annual Fund mean the ability to underwrite important school activities, just as gifts to the Capital Campaign help secure the future by improving facilities and building endowment.

I am happy to say it is an exciting time to be a part of DCD’s fundraising success— last year, the Annual Fund surpassed its goal, raising $610,140.

The Thrive campaign continued to set new records, raising more than $1.7 million in pledges and gifts, generously bolstered by a substantial Challenge match from the Hunter family.

As always, your participation remains a key ingredient to our success. DCD is proud that it can boast 97% participation among parents, and, for the fifth year in a row, 100% participation among faculty and staff.

This generosity is a vital part of what makes DCD the wonderful and magical place it is. We deeply appreciate it, especially as it allows us to continue to offer our children an education that sparks their interest, engages their curiosity, and inspires in them a lifelong love of learning.

The Hunter Challenge Raises $1.2 Million for Endowment In 2014, Susie Hunter and daughters Colby ’91, Kristin ’95, and Whitney ’98 jointly pledged $500,000 as a challenge gift that would match dollar for dollar every new pledge or gift to the endowment up to that amount.

Honorary Campaign Chair Susie Hunter, explaining the reasons behind her family’s extraordinary gift, said, “Quite simply, DCD has our hearts. All three of my girls went there. It’s our common family experience.”

Their family gift inspired the entire community of alumni, parents, parents of alumni, and friends to give generously to the endowment. By the end of the challenge period, DCD had raised a total of $1.2 million for its endowment, including $705,206 in new gifts.

Increasing DCD’s endowment, historically lower than its peer schools, has been a critical campaign goal, necessary to ensure a strong future for the school.

As Campaign Chair John Connors said, “A strong endowment is vital. It will allow DCD to continue to invest in teachers and programs—like theater, art, woodworking, and athletics—that ordinary operating dollars do not cover.”

Thanks to the Hunter family and others like them, DCD is poised to continue providing an excellent education to children now and in the future.

Lela Meadow-Conner ‘89: Building Community, One Film at a Time

L

ela Meadow-Conner is executive director of the Tallgrass Film Association, a nonprofit cinematic arts organization in Wichita, Kansas.

“Film Art, Wichita…. ” is an understandably startled first response.

Lela, in fact, confesses to having had the same response herself. But today she is part of a core of artists and educators transforming Wichita in what many are calling a major cultural renaissance.

“We’re really trying to change the perception of Kansas and the Midwest as just fly-over country,” she says. Earlier this year, Tallgrass sponsored a film production class with an award-winning documentary filmmaker from Vermont. The students set out to make a short film about life in Wichita, and the final product showcases the city’s thriving arts and cultural scene. (You can watch the film at tallgrassfilmfest.com.)

“There’s a lot of room for innovation in smaller cities,” she says. “It’s easier to make a big impact.”

For Lela, the role of art in bringing people together can be as important as the art itself. “We live in an age when that doesn’t happen often anymore,” she says,

“when going to the movies is something even I don’t get to do. I have two small kids. I don’t have time to do that. I watch a lot of stuff on my phone, on my computer, my iPad, at my desk—alone. So when you create these opportunities to come together, it brings back that idea of theater, of film viewing, as a communal experience. It creates conversation and builds bridges across segments of the population that might not otherwise be sitting under the same roof.”

In addition to year-round special screenings, filmmaker workshops, and a traveling road show, one of the organization’s major undertakings each year is the annual Tallgrass Film Festival, a five-day event held in October in downtown Wichita that features movies, parties, and educational opportunities. This year’s festival, the 13th, included 203 independent movies from 35 countries. More than 80 filmmakers traveled to Wichita from all over North America to showcase their films.

“People are hungry for this kind of cinematic programming here,” she says.

“When I first came here, I was shocked at how much art and culture there was in the city. And that was 12 years ago. It has

only grown since. I think Wichita is one of those places—true for a lot of Midwestern cities—where you only hear the negative, and you don’t see the cool stuff that’s going on. Ever since the first festival, international documentaries have been our audience favorites, because that’s not something they are typically exposed to here. We’re really proud that we can help people see the world through a different lens by showing films they otherwise wouldn’t see, especially in the theater. Certain films, like Among the Believers, about a Pakistani jihadist cleric, or Armor of Light, about an evangelical minister who questions the possibilities of being both pro-gun and pro-life, are great, because they really incite discussion and thought, and that’s exactly what we’re trying to achieve.”

Lela knows there is much creative work involved in getting audiences out these days. “We live such a fast-paced lifestyle, to even take two hours to go to the theater seems like a crazy luxury when we should be home checking our email and working 24/7. A lot of what we do involves eventizing our films, for example, presenting a film with other local arts organizations,

For the last three years, we’ve partnered with our local music theater, which is one of the biggest regional theater companies in the country. Next year, their season includes “Oklahoma,” and together, we’ll screen the film version coupled with a pie auction to raise money for both of our organizations.

In January, we will present a family-friendly film festival called “Smallgrass” with Exploration Place, Wichita’s science and discovery museum. In August, we will present “Dudegrass,” an ode to the Big Lebowski, where we will screen the film in a bowling alley. We really try to be creative, and it’s a lot of fun.”

A champion of women filmmakers, Lela is anxious to introduce their work to audiences and features a Spotlight on Women Filmmakers as part of the festival.

“Filmmaking is such a male-dominated industry,” she says. “So many more women are now making films. Every year we do a screening for high school students during the festival. This year, we screened the film Do You Dream in Color?, directed by two women. Co-director Abigail Fuller attended the festival and answered questions for more than 800 area students after the film. It’s so important for these young people to see women at the helm. It makes them think,

‘I can do that! I can make a film.’ There’s so much opportunity now. All you need is a smart phone.” In fact, the festival also screened Tangerine, a critically-acclaimed feature film that was shot entirely on an iPhone.

Though technology played little role in Lela’s days at DCD, she remembers well the rush of energy around every class play. “I rarely had any lines let alone remembered them at the right time, but the experience was confidence-instilling even if it didn’t seem that way at the time. I remember all the creative writing that we did, especially in third grade with Mrs. Lindsay. Coupled with the emphasis on reading, it helped me to understand how important the elements of storytelling are to creating a sustainable and viable culture. I’m sure the emphasis on art and creativity at DCD (including the memorable shop classes with Mr. Patriarca and the jagged artifacts that still adorn my parents’ house) helped shape my ‘stubbornly independent’ outlook on life, because art is about witnessing unique points of view, which often include subtleties and imperfections.

“It’s interesting, because when I was younger I didn’t even think about a career in the arts. I wanted to be a lawyer or a journalist, even up to when I graduated from college. When I went to college and

moved to Los Angeles, I wanted to be a poli-sci major. But obviously, the arts were deeply ingrained in me somewhere. And I would say, not just the arts and the humanities, but also the idea—because I work for a nonprofit—of giving back, that generosity, that what-can-you-do-for-your-community spirit. I can remember when I was at DCD, it felt like a real community—everybody helped each other out, and everybody knew each other. Actually it’s kind of like that in Wichita now. It’s a small city. It has that same feeling as DCD; we all know each other; we all help each other out; we all support each other. This sense of togetherness is something I hold sacred from my time at DCD.” With her husband Jim and young daughters Edie and Margo, Lela Meadow-Conner is working to spread the good word of the arts and community, with reverberations reaching who knows how far beyond Wichita.

One of the visiting filmmakers at this year’s festival recently reached out to her and is interested in turning the story of how a big-city girl uprooted her life to Wichita to create an independent film festival for the community. Perhaps this fictionalized version of the story will hit the film festival circuit in years to come.

She plans to major in studio art at Dartmouth, where she is a freshman.

This project turned out to be significant in my life because it sowed the seeds for an irrational passion for boats and the water that persists to this day. I sail a boat that is two years older than I am—a catboat built in 1937—and continue my lifelong career in the marine publishing business as editor of Points East magazine. You see me in the photo, in my punt, you see me at 76 in my old catboat, still a boy, always a romantic, at heart. Thanks DCD.”

Ben Ducas ’95 married Alex Harper in 2013 and continues to work for Credit Suisse. He lives in London.

Joan Crocker, parent of Nick Crocker ’96 and Lizzie Crocker ’00, writes, “Nothing gave me more pleasure than to see my son Nick frolicking about with his own sons at the DCD Fair. Shades of yesteryear. Fun to see other past parents and their grandchildren enjoying the day the same way.”

Patrick Ducas ’97 married Betsey Reiche on Bristol Island in Maine in July 2014. They recently moved to Portland, Francis “Nim” March ’50 in the DCD punt he built when he was eight years old.

Her fondest memory of DCD is “math class with Mr. Jackson.” The coolest thing she has done since her time at DCD is being “published and getting married!” The thing she learned at DCD that she uses in her everyday life now is a “love of learning and respect for the arts.”

2005 Myles Bowen ’05 received a master’s degree in school psychology from William James College (formerly Massachusetts School for Professional Psychology). He is working at the Academy of the Pacific Rim in Boston and at the Tremont School in Weston. He presented his research findings at the Think Kids Conference held at Massachusetts General Hospital on October 17.

Alex Nessa ’02 is engaged to Jeff Van Siclen. She and Jeff have moved from Washington, DC, back to the Boston area, where Alex is working at Belmont Hill School.

Holly Taylor Fabbri ’98 gave birth to a baby girl, Zoe Elizabeth, on April 26, 2015.

Sam Kaplan ’99 opened the gallery season at Nobles with his show “Product Placement” at the Foster Gallery, which ran from September 14 to October 8.

Class Notes 2010 Juliana Fiore ’10 was profiled in the Boston Globe’s Campus Angle section in September 2015. Juliana just started her sophomore year at Bowdoin and is looking forward to another season of playing field hockey for the Polar Bears. Last year, she played in 20 games.

Josie Linell ’10 was named to the Dean’s List at Bucknell University for the spring semester of the 2014–15 academic year.

2009 Trevor Fidler ’09 accepted his West Point appointment for the Class of 2019 United States Military Academy. He will study Business and play hockey for Army.

Stephanie Mace ’09 was named to the Dean’s List at Claremont McKenna College.

After completing a GAP year, Skyler Matthews ’10 headed off to Colorado College this fall.

2011 Carly Alperin ’11 and Tracy Alperin ’11 graduated from Thayer Academy on June 6, 2015. Carly is attending Franklin and Marshall College, and Tracy is a student at the University of New Hampshire.

Maddie Ayles ’11 graduated from Nobles with High Distinction and won Sumner Matthews ’11, center, with her parents, Ginger Salazar and Brett Matthews at her high school graduation. Sumner moved back east this fall to attend Dartmouth College.

Jake Daniels ’11 received the Kiki Rice-Gray Prize from Milton Academy, awarded for outstanding contributions to Milton performing arts throughout his or her career in both performance and production. Jake’s mother, Caroline Daniels, writes, “All of the years at DCD, learning lines and movement, are the foundation of Jake’s love of the theatre and performance.” Jake is attending the University of Chicago, with plans to work on improv performance with Max Kliman ’11, who is studying at Northwestern.

Lily Feinberg ’11 graduated on June 6, 2015, from Thayer Academy, where she was inducted into the national Cum Laude Society. She is attending Boston College.

Sarah ’95 had a baby, Madeleine Harriette, in May. They are all doing well. We’ve been traveling— France, Florida, and New Hampshire. In the “small world”.... We were on a river cruise in France and met DCD people, the aunt and uncle of Katie and Stephen Cochran.
