History Nancy Bedell, Class of 1929, wrote the following about Dedham Country Day School’s annual literary magazine: “The Jackdaw’s Nest was the name chosen for DCD’s literary annual, which first appeared in June, 1929. As a student wrote in the introduction to the first issue, “We had two contests for the name and cover design of this paper. Finally, we decided on The Jackdaw’s Nest, suggested by Teddy Lyman, and the design which you see was drawn by Jane Hamlin. Almost every child in the school has written a story or a poem for this book. We have tried hard to make it a success, and we hope the readers will enjoy it.”

In 1977 Dedham Country Day School changed the name of the literary magazine to PSP. The new title suited the publication because each edition included pictures, stories, and poems. When the publication was first introduced, students’ artwork was included, although this was not mentioned in Nancy Bedell’s brief history of The Jackdaw’s Nest. In 2007 the magazine underwent a name change once again. After the entire DCD community participated in two rounds of voting, the new name of the publication, Dream Create Discover, was born. In 2014, the annual became a full-color magazine. There are a number of school traditions that have remained an integral part of what makes DCD a unique, exciting and interesting community, and the yearly edition of the school’s art and literary magazine is one of them. Students in the Primary, Lower and Middle School continue to submit work to be included in the annual publication. We are happy to share the 90th edition of our publication!

Left: The cover of the first edition of Dedham Country Day’s literary magazine, published in 1929, was designed by an eighth grader, Jane Hamlin.

Maybe a Monster? If you are looking to buy a monster, Henry is the perfect one! He has everything you need to fall asleep, including scary stories. He can also act out scary scenes (he loves to act!). He is 23 (monster) years old and his name is Henry. Here are some reasons you should buy Henry. He has a spiky tail, so if you tried to get out of bed he could hit you. Yikes! He’s also very strong, and I mean very strong, so he could pin you to your bed so you couldn’t escape! One more reason (even though there’s many more) is that he has a lot of eyes, so he could keep his eyes on you so you couldn’t escape. He’s also a really nice guy in the mornings. Also, he is only $265! Why wouldn’t you want this monster? Maybe a monster? Aoife Keane Grade 4

Come Get a Monster!

Hey are you looking to buy a monster? Tarra Bones is the best monster ever. First of all, Tarra is very nice and helpful in the morning, which is amazing. At night, Tarra does her job very well. Tarra has very scary claws that she could easily use to scratch or injure you. Second, she has a very long tail that she could use to whip you at night, and it could hurt you. Knowing that would make you want to stay in bed and pull the sheets up tight. Lastly, she has eyes that glow yellow at night and that turn blue in the morning, which is very scary. Thank you for your time, I hope you get Tarra, and if you do I know that you will love her and she will do her job very well. NO REFUNDS !!!!!!!!!! Kali Emmons Grade 4

My Shoe Laces I am so excited to get my shoe laces for soccer my mom ordered. The color is purple. Then I went to do a marble race with Kenny. The second time it was the green marble that won. I was waiting still for my shoe laces to come here. I waited a long time. I felt patient. Then Kenny’s PediaSure package came but I was still waiting. Then some clothing came for my mom and mom went to open the package. I was still waiting! I said, “This is taking a long time!” I felt excited when they finally came. Teddy Knight Grade 1

The Hike on Wonderland Trail I was at Acadia. There were lots of hikes. I went on Wonderland Trail. There were a lot of ferns. At the time it was misty. In Maine it gets misty. At the end of the trail there was an ocean. I went on some rocks. Grandma and Papa had a hard time trying to get over. Then Nicky and mommy came over. I found a different path, but it was too skinny! We hiked back to our car. We went a different way. We hiked and hiked. Then we saw trees with bumps. Daddy took a picture. It was a clearing. We heard the ocean. We were back where we started so now we hiked back. William Chamberlain Grade 1

Mack the Monster Need a monster for your bed at night? Then come to Alice’s Monsters. Our specialty is a monster named Mack. I will tell you more about him. Mack is a one-of-a-kind monster. First of all, he has very sharp hearing. And I mean really sharp hearing. As soon as you try to move your blanket over to get out of bed, Mack will instantly try to scare you. Also, he has purple poisonous drool. When you get out of bed, it will carpet the floor, getting the sticky stuff everywhere. Plus, it stings your toes when you step on it! Lastly, Mack has a very scratchy voice. When you step on the floor, he will say something scary like: “I could really go for a hand tonight.” You can get Mack at just $150! He’s the lowest priced monster around, with the highest quality. So, come to Alice’s Monsters today! Or order online and get free shipping. Monsters sold separately. Alice Thacher Grade 4

Monster For Sale If you want to buy a monster who will scare you for sure, Gary surely is the monster for you! First of all, Gary has extremely sensitive senses and hearing. He can sense your slightest movement, whether it is to get out of bed or not. He can also tell if you are deeply asleep or awake. Also, he spits dark blue ooze that coats the floor. Try to get out of bed and you will either fall and get eaten or fall and get hurt. Lastly, Gary is very quick and quiet. If you get out of bed he could creep up on you and tear you to shreds before you even have a chance to walk a step. This monster’s talents include: creating and telling endless scary stories, sleeping standing up and with one eye closed and one eye open, talking in a deep, raspy voice that is eerie and mid-volume, tap dancing, ballet dancing and cooking gourmet food. If you are looking for a scary monster, come buy Gary for only $65 and he will surely be the best purchase you ever made. Jocelyn Riordan Grade 4

Untitled The dark dreary evening had no stars to shine brightly on the world below. Everything was silent as the night hawks flew through the black sky. The moon was covered with the damp clouds. Morning was trying to ease its way through the new drops of rain that had just begun to fall. As the soft rain dripped down on the roof it had a rhythmic beat pitter patter, pitter, patter. The rain dripped down the thinly lined sill on the outer layer of the glass. Erin Keith Epker ‘82 Grade 7

An excerpt from: Let Me Live Through This Day 8:15, we were off. I was so excited and nervous. My mom was complaining that we should have started out earlier because we had an interview at the Weak Boarding School. I can remember the day as distinctly as I can remember the cereals in our house over the past few years. The time passed away quickly and we were in Newport at 9:30. “Well,” Mom said cheerfully, “we have half an hour,” she said, trying to calm me down. “Let’s go and look at the old mansions! They’re beautiful! I remember when I was a little girl and we used to spend summers here.” Mom and I had to wait a long time before we could go in, and by the time we got in there it was 1:00. We were greeted by a man with a thin red beard and thick rimmed glasses. His name was Mr. Take-a-Chance who was the head of the admissions. “So, Katherine, you’re here for your interview?” “Yes. You can call me Katie if you’d like.” “And what if I wouldn’t?” Startled by this remark I stuttered, “You, you, you can uh...ccccall me uh... whatever you want.” “So, Kathleen, what are you looking for in a school?” “It’s Katie, sir.” “I’m uh...” I said with a lump forming in my throat, “also looking for a good education.” “Wrong school.” “Well, uh...” I said holding the tears back, “I’ll settle for good sports.” “Wrong school.” Now with tears running down my cheeks, crying in full force I said, “Excuse me, sir, what is this school for?” “Well, Kelly,” he said calmly, “if I could tell you that I wouldn’t be in this dump.” Katie Keally Cochran ’82 Grade 8

His Father’s Joy, His Mother’s Pride Can Never Be Denied Once upon a babe was born, On a cool December morn, To a thankful mother so filled with pride, To a father filled with you, At the sight of his little boy His father’s joy, his mother’s pride, could never ever be denied. Never ever be denied. His face so lean, His eyes so keen, His body so very ready to be tried, His first steps so strong as if he could do no wrong. His father’s joy, his mother’s pride, could never ever be denied. Never ever be denied. His childhood a delight, His manhood filled with love and light, Strength, courage, spirit surrounded him on every side, Life itself gave him wealth, just as God gave him health. He was filled with justice, integrity, honesty, he never lied. His father’s joy, his mother’s pride, could never ever be denied. Never ever be denied. Then as the years passed by so fast, His mind became so very vast. He pondered over life’s injustice and he cried. Suddenly he became aware of life’s cold deadly stare He watched those being murdered, stabbed and tried, But his father’s joy, his mother’s pride, could never ever be denied. Never ever be denied. Robert Fulton Robert Fulton started to make a steamboat, in Europe, but the engine was too heavy and broke through the hull and sank. Later he came to America to build another steamboat. This steamboat he called the Clermont. He built this one with an extra strong hull. He tried it out on the Hudson River. This time the engine didn’t break through the hull, and it ran. It only went two miles an hour but that didn’t bother Fulton. He built the engine bigger, stronger, and faster. This new kind of transportation changed the lives of many merchants. It helped their business a great deal. This new kind of steam engine was run by steam. The steam pushed against the paddle wheel. Roger P. Cheever ‘57 Grade 6

Hockey Skating: When you want to skate, go to a rink and get your stuff on and then you get on the ice. Being Safe: When you play hockey, you need a lot of gear. But if you are a goalie you need more pads than other players. All the players need pads. The pads cover your whole body. They help you to not get hurt. Hockey players also wear helmets that protect their face. Hockey: Hockey is a sport that is not easy. There are two teams. They are trying to score. You score by getting the puck in the net. A Game: The game starts. There are 10 players ready. 3 players go out. The game starts at a face-off. A face-off is a battle for the puck. The face-off is fun but only one person on each team can touch the puck. There are 3 periods. At the end the teams shake hands. To win you need to score more goals. Hockey is really fun, but hard, too. Frank Nemeskal Grade 1

Fall Rebirth Fall is the best season: It is eating pie and visiting graveyards, mourning the death of so many people who have passed into a more serene place.

But we must not overlook The positive with the negative For the negative is The box with directions to find

Fall is knowing the life of outside will soon crumple and perish under the white blanket that suffocates them and takes the life out of their souls.

The positive is the box, Stuck in the area where no one looks Because no one cares to look there Fall is the season that seems To come and go Like the souls of people who live

Fall is seeing the life and color drain from leaves and fall to the ground stooping as low as the underworld which awaits them soon.

Dark and light Peace and fight Winter and spring

But fall is also freedom.

What will they bring For summer is cool But fall has it all

Wishing you could run as fast and free as the leaves that blow in the wind and cruise through the air. They are in flight and soaring for a fraction of a second. And then it’s gone just as fast as it came.

Whether it’s life or death Pick up the phone and call You never know what life will bring From death in the fall To rebirth in the spring Fall is fun Fall is free

They fall to the ground Maybe to arise just one more second But even so They end up

Fall reflects my soul Fall reflects me.

Dead, Useless, A Disgrace, Then, Misplaced, Fallen, Broken, And Nothing......

The Soccer Game I was so excited for my soccer game! My coach was all ready for soccer. Simon was already there. I was dribbling the ball down the field. I kicked the ball into the goal. The goalie tried to block the ball but missed! I scored a goal! We already won. The game was all over. We already drove off. The soccer game was so, so, so much fun. Bear Gogolak Grade 1

Falling Asleep My body lies comfortably in my bed, I am looking up to the darkened sky, I can feel the pillow below my head, I see the previous day and I say “Bye!” My eyes get heavy so they start to close, My arms and legs sink down and down and down, My first thoughts from the day begin again, My head detects nothing, not even sound. I do not want to think of tomorrow, I do not want to think of my next test, The pencil I am going to borrow, But I know that I will be at my best. A beautiful image appears and I see, The swirling image of the deep blue sea. Cam O’Rourke Grade 8

Sonnet She thought there was no room for her to speak She put up with the feeling of defeat She didn’t know there was so much to seek She wondered what was left for her to meet To tell the truth was not worth all the pain Why start over when it is all the same She thought there would be nothing good to gain Why talk when they all think it’s for the fame She felt alone as if no one was there Guilt built up with each word she wouldn’t say But to speak would be a pain she couldn’t bear Her voice was lost as if it ran away The time was soon lost within her session Speak or not to speak that was the question Natalie Rudnick Grade 8

Spring Spring is my best season: it is the smell of the green grass, or seeing the trees become green. Spring is the baseball season. It is hearing the crack of the bat and cheer of the crowd. Spring is riding bikes and hiking. This season is a preparation for the hot summer. Spring is warm days and rainy days, but most of all, this season is open windows, clean air and bright green grass. Alex Landry Grade 7

Spring

Spring is the best season: it is playing in the damp grass with my dogs, or planting a new garden in the soft soil just tilled that morning; spring is soft moss under my feet just sprouted after winter; it is a new world reborn after a cold winter’s day; but most of all, spring is born into summer. Maia Pantazelos Grade 7

Spring

Spring is the best season: it is warm air against my face, or playing baseball in the nice warm weather, not too hot, not too cold. Spring is everything fun to do; my birthday, Easter, my favorite sports, and the urge to get to summer. Spring is like an oasis of singing birds and blue waters, but most of all, spring is beautiful. Will Curran Grade 7

Summer

Summer is the best season: it is no school and sleeping late, or it is traveling to exotic places such as Italy; summer is warm, nice weather; and sparkling sand beaches and the ocean breeze from the Atlantic on the Cliff Walk and Easton’s Beach in Newport; but most of all, summer is Red Sox baseball. Where I’m From I’m from going down the wrong trail that Matthew told me to go in, in skiing. Going in the sizzling hot tub at Stowe after going for a swim in the freezing pool water. I’m from waking up at 6:00 a.m. on Christmas morning, waiting on the stairs to go downstairs and open my presents. When it’s time, running onto the couch to wait for everyone. Then the sweet smell of pancakes and fruit salad fills the air. I’m from going to Ms. P’s house every day to see Luna, Holy Rider, and adorable Missy Eden Scarlet. Playing with her until it was time to go home. Saying our goodbyes for a while. I’m from going on endless boat rides to MV waiting to see Mimi waiting for me. I’m from going to The Flying Horses trying SO hard to beat Cam for the golden ring. I’m for going to get ice cream after almost everything. I’m from going to the playground with my 10-21-year-old cousins playing hide and seek, which we all enjoy. I’m from “shoot where the goalie isn’t. Bam Bam 2019, yeah.” I’m from “it’s time and I’m from the little blue house 256,” according to Matthew. That is what makes me Ms. Muffet. Eden O’Rourke Grade 4 59
