Surrounded by a community of students, teachers, administrators, and parents who adore her and joined by family members who traveled from as far away as California, Mrs. Maloney received special words of appreciation from Head of School Nick Thacher for her 34 years in the classroom and love and dedication to generations of children.

After the ribbon was cut with a pair of giant wooden scissors, Mrs. Maloney took the first run down the brand new slide to the shouts of the rapt audience of children spurring her on.

@]Y\ kJ]hgjl Uncovering the Truth Behind Gender Differences in Education Once upon a time in Greenwich, Connecticut, for reasons that now elude me, I was asked to speak to a group of nursery school parents on the topic of gender differences. This was long before John Gray’s Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus (referenced in Rick Edie’s short piece on page 6 of this Bulletin) had entered the Golden American Rolodex, but I had been observing and teaching boys and girls of varying ages for some time, watching their behavior and interactions among themselves and with their parents, and had studied and read a fair amount about their differences.

I had also received the benefit of the wisdom from a seasoned teaching colleague who had herself raised three sons and three daughters from birth to adulthood. When I asked her what the difference was from her veteran parental perspective, she said simply, “Sons drive you crazy, but daughters bring you to your knees.” I actually launched my presentation to the nursery school audience with that particular bromide — and swiftly realized that while the comment seems to be as close as one can get to generalized truth about the difference between girls and boys, it’s not the right line to use with parents of three-year-olds, to whom their children’s adolescence is a far away galaxy.

In the following pages of our Bulletin you will read two brief pieces on gender written by a pair of my perceptive DCD colleagues. Each is focusing largely on one gender or the other, but of course many of their insights are equally applicable to both girls and boys. DCD has quite a distinguished 111-year history of coeducation.

For example, both boys and girls participated 2

in “Sloyd” (woodworking) when Miss Faulkner launched our school in 1903, and the grown-ups at DCD have been thinking carefully and (I hope) equitably about gender issues ever since!

Single-sex schools can make a passionate and occasionally compelling case for segregating children by gender. One glance at the selfportraits hanging on the classroom walls in any Kindergarten will argue for protecting the immature little boys, who produce a clumsy “Mr. Potato” with stick arms, from the overwhelming artistic sophistication of their female classmates, most of whom have already reached the stage of rendering eyelashes on the eyes in their portraits.

And, without question (though Carol Gilligan’s seminal research on pre-adolescent gender was as much anecdotal as scientific), some girls need encouragement and protection from their male counterparts in Middle School lest they “lose their voice.”

Sensible, experienced teachers didn’t need Drs. Myra and David Sadker’s research out of Johns Hopkins to recognize that little boys, as a group and as a rule, tend to dominate selfcontained elementary classrooms and demand more teacher attention. Hey, we figured that out on our own, when we were in school, if we were in a coed setting. On the other hand, as Dr. Sue Quinlan determined in her study of independent elementary schools a generation ago, firstborn girls, in large numbers in a self-contained classroom, can be even more competitive and demanding and are the most significant variable in determining whether teachers label a particular class as “difficult.”

I’ll offer one telling example from my own “Learning is a Way of Life.” What we learned, DCD tenure, though it appears on its surface with this experiment, was that flexibility and 4

new initiatives based on demonstrated student needs are key ingredients for educational success.

DCD’s history has long been imbued with this understanding, which works across genders. And we are, after all, privileged to be an “independent” school, free to experiment when we feel the needs of our students dictate programmatic change.

In the past several years we have been privileged to work with an expert consultant, Dr. Jennifer Bryan, who has come to the DCD campus to conduct a variety of workshops for teachers focusing on issues related to sexuality and gender. Under her guidance we have revamped curriculum and deepened our understanding of non-traditional family structures, inclusivity, sexuality, and transgender issues. This has been challenging and, in some instances, unfamiliar ground for many of us, but Dr. Bryan’s practical advice, understanding, and familiarity with child development and classroom pedagogy have helped DCD become a better and more welcoming place for all children.

Time and time again DCD parents and teachers have heard me emphasize that the understated intention of our educational mission is to help develop “happy, healthy, and productive 30-yearolds.” While there are plenty of things we cannot predict about the future, one thing seems certain.

Virtually all of our graduates, as they flower into their young adulthood, will do so in a coed world and a coed future. The skills and dispositions— academic, social, and personal—with which we arm them will determine their happiness, health, and productivity. They need to learn how to be comfortable with both genders and, as we all have recently come to appreciate, everything in between.

Strategies for Reaching Boys Inside and Outside the Classroom :q Ja[c =\a]

Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus. This 1992 best seller by John Gray described the fundamental differences between men and women. Perhaps Mr. Gray was extrapolating on some differences between the sexes that were expressed in the early 19th-century nursery rhyme “What Are Little Boys Made Of?” “Snips and snails and puppy dog tails” is the answer, whereas little girls are made of “sugar and spice and everything nice.” Society today recognizes the sexism in those words, yet the stereotypes of how boys and girls should dress and behave persist even amidst the growing awareness that we do not live in a genderbinary world. For many years, parents and educators have recognized the disparate messages that the

media presents to boys and girls. As an educator (and parent of three girls), I’ve most often heard of the challenges facing girls in the classroom—that they are not as confident in their abilities in math or science, for example, or that their voices can be drowned out by more outgoing, talkative boys.

Yet some have been raising the flag for boys.

Michael Thompson’s 1999 book Raising Cain and Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s upcoming documentary “The Mask You Live In” both argue for the need to understand boys better and help them develop fully as individuals. Schools obviously have a role in that development. But given all the societal pressures boys face, how does one engage them effectively in school so that they excel academically and

become emotionally and socially healthy individuals? And, how does one do this in a co-ed environment?

My first experience in educating boys came as a leader at an all-boys summer camp in upstate New York. There, the goal was to develop in boys the capacity to empathize with others, to think of others besides themselves, and to learn that showing emotional connectivity was just as masculine as being a good athlete. At the root of the experience was the camper-leader relationship, in which leaders (not “counselors”) were role models for the boys. Leaders coached boys on teams, ate meals with them, and shared cabin life. We spent free time with them; led cabin overnights, hikes, and canoe trips; and held thoughtful discussions before bedtime to allow boys to discuss ethical and moral choices. Leaders came to know their campers well and campers their leaders over a four- or eightweek period. The role leaders played in the development of their campers’ character was significant.

A recent book has applied the same concept to education. In I Can Learn From You: Boys as Relational Learners (Harvard Education Press, 2014), authors Michael Reichert and Richard Hawley argue that the key to effective engagement of boys lies not in content or pedagogy, but in the relationships that teachers develop with boys that inspire them to achievement. The authors write in an article at edweek.org, “One intriguing finding [from their study of 18 schools in six countries] was that the boys asked to comment on pedagogy (specific lessons) that worked well for them were unable to do so without describing—and appreciating—the teacher conveying it.”

Of course, the classroom is one place where teachers make connections with boys (art classes included). Research

says that boys need to move more, participate in activities that end in a product and that build in competition, read books and write about topics that interest them (rather than the teacher), and express humor in appropriate ways and at appropriate times. This kind of physical learning can be found throughout DCD’s classrooms, from science labs to history archeological digs, from math manipulations to written translations in language. For my part, I try to engage students in material using a multi-media approach. When studying Sherlock Holmes in the Seventh Grade, for example, students watch snippets of films to see how different actors portray the famous detective, physically construct

with boys outside of class? The advisory program and athletics are two good places to look. In the advisory program (which includes Middle School meetings and cross-grade activity groups), faculty play touch football or ultimate Frisbee with students, teach yoga, bake cookies, lead trivia contests and bike rides, as well as give talks on their experiences in order to share personal values. Teachers who coach can also develop unique relationships with boys, both presenting and observing different skills and interests that complement what happens in the classroom.

But it is outside the classroom and off the field, in the little and perhaps more individual moments, that true relationships develop, those connections that inspire kids to strive to excel: teachers can shoot the breeze with students at the end of sports as they are packing up to go home; pat them on the back for a job well done on a quiz, for a particularly astute comment in class, or to show support when they have made a mistake; seek them out to review a poor quiz or to work on a challenging math assignment rather than wait for them to initiate a meeting; or privately encourage them to present at a Middle School assembly.

Readers might be thinking that the focus on connecting with boys is too narrow, and that inspiring all students, no matter the gender, is the most important job of a teacher. Fair enough.

If teachers vary their instructional approaches and consider the needs and learning differences of all their students, gender becomes less of an issue. That is one of the many qualities that makes DCD special: teachers work to get to know and develop relationships with each student individually, inspiring them to a love of learning and to be the best they can be.

Later, they draw a floor plan of the castle in Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death.” In Sixth Grade, students act as police and keep a “detective notebook” as they investigate a crime committed in McKnight Malmar’s “The Storm.” When it comes to that dry subject of grammar, nothing beats the “Schoolhouse Rock” videos that students love dancing and singing to as they learn the basics of the English language. The enthusiasm and creativity with which DCD teachers share their subject matter is of course one way to connect with boys.

But any single teacher (in the Middle School, at least) only sees a boy for 45 minutes a day in class, so where are the opportunities for developing relationships

Raising Confident Girls :q =eada] Da]Z`g^^ “The Confidence Gap,” “ Qualities of Confident Women,” and “ Ways Women can Exude Confidence at Work” represent just a small sampling of recent articles that explore how women perceive themselves relative to their actual competence.

While self-confidence has often been an issue for women, the subject has become increasingly topical of late.

Much of the recent rhetoric in this vein has focused on professionalage females, almost ignoring that confidence (or lack thereof ) is

something learned when we’re children. And so we’re compelled as educators and parents to wonder, what strategies can we implement at home and at school to ensure that our girls are growing up both competent and confident?

Gmj Jgd] Yk HYj]flk Yf\ =\m[Ylgjk As parents, and as educators, we want our girls — and our boys — to develop intellectually, and also socially.

We want to educate them not just to be scholars, but also to be engaged leaders in their communities. We want to provide them with the tools to be

lifelong learners and problem solvers.

Ensuring that girls feel confident about themselves and their future includes considering the messages we send through what we say and how we act. As adults, we often function in our daily lives unaware of the cultural biases in the language we use, for example. Over time, girls internalize the messages we send, and that can have immediate and lasting influence.

Sitting at the dinner table, Dad might ask, “Joe, have you thought about joining the investment club?” He unintentionally neglects to ask the same question of Joe’s sister, Jane.

This example demonstrates how girls develop implicit attitudes, a concept popularized by social psychologist Mahzarin Banaji of Harvard

University.

Banaji’s focus is primarily on attitudes that are implicit or unconscious. Thus, in the example above, by only asking Joe about the investment club, the father is saying (and Jane is hearing), “The investment club is not for girls.” The result is the formation of an implicit attitude that girls are not associated with investing and finance. If I had a nickel for every time this scenario played out at my own dinner table growing up (with the well-intentioned males in my family), I’d sure have a lot of nickels.

In all seriousness, while my example demonstrates how an implicit attitude can develop around a specific subject matter, our daily actions also contribute to the formation of implicit attitudes. Thus, it’s crucial that we are aware of how we conduct ourselves around our children. For girls, this concept is particularly transferable to what we eat in front of them, how we talk about beauty and self-image, and how we dress. What we do and say is constantly watched, and so we must model the behavior we hope our own girls will exhibit as they mature into adults.

in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)? Research says that girls learn best through collaboration, communication, humanitarian efforts, and real-life examples. Responding to the problem of dwindling supply of graduates for an increasing supply of future jobs, we can take what we know about how girls learn, and create environments in which they can thrive.

Capitalizing on girls’ drive to help others, schools can specifically aim to make their work come alive. Here at DCD, girls learn engineering through

also occur at other times during the school day. One example is as simple as saying to a group of friends during recess, “Hey girls, Mary is sitting alone on the playground. Let’s go sit with her today.”

Leadership doesn’t always mean that a student has to be on the student council or be a team captain. The Girls Leadership Institute, co-founded by author and educator Rachel Simmons, emphasizes that decisions like what to wear and how to carry oneself are all opportunities for girls to lead. Yet leadership also happens when girls respond appropriately to text messages, make good decisions under peer pressure, and take action to defend a friend who’s been bullied. When girls develop leadership skills in these seemingly minor ways, they build the foundation they’ll need to advocate for themselves and for others.

Consider again the media focus on women’s confidence. For girls to build self-esteem and become successful in whatever their pursuits might be, they need encouragement, guidance, and support. Most girls have no sense of what their future might look like until someone says, “You know what? YOU can do this.” A school culture that exhibits the right balance of inspiration, support, growth, and rigor can expand the idea of what’s possible — for both boys and girls.

This is the environment that DCD creates for our students. When every student graduates, she — or he — has developed her own authentic voice and is armed with the skills to speak proudly and to thrive in life beyond our campus.

KL=E ^gj ?ajdk You’ve probably read that our nation is dropping farther and farther behind global competitors, particularly as it relates to education in the sciences.

Yet, jobs within these areas offer the highest wage potential for both sexes and exhibit virtually no gender wage gap. While women comprise 58 percent of the overall workforce, they hover below 20 percent in most science and engineering occupations.

This raises the question, what can schools do to engage girls’ interest

the process of designing a complex machine that will ultimately have a real-life application. While girls initially work individually, they are encouraged to help classmates through challenges. This fosters collaboration and problem solving. They also share their machines with their Kindergarten buddies. Bringing this project to life and promoting collaboration immerses them in the subject matter and leverages their strength as hands-on learners.

Good morning. We made it. After all the graduations we’ve sat through, it is finally our turn to sit upon this stage and to live through the bittersweet last moments at DCD. My favorite memory of DCD is graduation. And no, not this graduation.

But all the ones that came before this. This is not to say that this graduation is a not great one. It is. What was special about all of the others was the fact that I was not graduating. I remember as a Second Grader, eagerly anticipating that moment when I would finally be free of school for three whole months, hardly being able to sit still in my seat—a feeling that I’m sure most of the Second Graders now share as well.

Aside from the glorious feeling of summer finally arriving, there was something else about graduations that I never realized was there—the reassuring fact that I knew I would be coming back the next year, and to a school that I loved. A feeling that I actually didn’t have one year.

In Fifth Grade, I went to my public school after moving to a new town. This was an

especially hard transition for me, considering that DCD is all I had known up to that point. This was a pivotal moment in my life, as it gave me insight into what a school other than DCD was like. While at this school, I never felt that it was quite right. .... I realized that there is something about DCD, some kind of “special sauce” (to steal McDonald’s term) that it had, that I craved.

The “special sauce” that DCD had was something intangible. It was the feeling I got walking through the front door, being warmly greeted by Ms. Laneau, the feeling of overwhelming comfort, the feeling that every teacher wants you to succeed. They don’t only care about us as students, but as people. And most importantly, I missed my friends and classmates immensely. It made me think of the saying, “You don’t know what you have, until it’s gone.” After having discussed this with my parents, we came to the conclusion that I needed to be back at DCD. After only three months, I returned. It was this experience that made me really start appreciating DCD for what it was, a

phenomenal school, and dare I say, a phenomenal family, something I should have recognized long before.

In Kindergarten, we were named the Rainbow Family. At the time I thought, “Why are we the Rainbow Family? Aren’t we just a class?” But now I realize that we are, in fact, a family. And this family that I am describing reaches out to not just our class, but to DCD as a whole.

I feel that DCD is my family, not only because I am an only child and I enjoy being around the company of other kids, but because, and I think that all of my classmates would agree, we have all helped each other grow and reach new heights, something that real families do.

We’ve had a lot of help along the way. Our relationships with the

students who have come and gone before us and the students who will come after us are all contributors to our education. And finally, all of our teachers and parents, who have supported us in and outside the classroom, sharing stories of their lives with us and always pushing us to do our very best. So to all of you, thank you. We will not forget all the valuable lessons that you have taught us.

I solicited my classmates for their favorite DCD memories. A common theme among their responses was that none of them were individual accomplishments. Anyone could have answered with a memory that was exclusive to them, but no one did. All of our best memories involve being together as a class. I guess we really have become the Rainbow Family.

In a few hours, we will be leaving behind the valuable connections and friendships that we spent years forging. However, this is not to say that we will completely abandon all the connections we have made. As our family of 22 goes its separate ways, I know, that like our games of Taps, everyone will do his or her part in keeping that ball of communication up in the air. As much as I like to say that I am ready to move on, I don’t feel like I am. It’s not that I don’t feel academically prepared. DCD has certainly prepared me for that. It’s not that I am afraid that I will not make new friends. I will, and so will all of my classmates. What I believe scares me the most about moving on is that I feel I am leaving my family.

Emilie Liebhoff is DCD’s new Director of Admissions and Assistant Head of School.

Emilie has served in a number of different roles during her career in education. Her most recent school role was as Director of Advancement and Assistant Director of Admissions at Belmont Day School.

She earned her MBA from Cornell University, her master’s in education from Harvard University, and her bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College, where she was captain of the Division 1 women’s ice hockey team.

Despite her academic achievements, she says she struggled in school and credits her teachers with helping her

develop strategies to compensate for her difficulties and succeed.

“I had incredible coaches and teachers,” she says, “people who guided me.

Some of those great teachers made me feel like I wanted to do that for other students, and I became interested in confidence and self-esteem,” an area where she continues to focus her attention (see her article on page 8).

Emilie is the founder of Moms as Mentors®, a leadership and self-esteem program for mothers and daughters, and the former deputy director of the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools.

She is on the board of Invest in Girls, a financial literacy program for high school girls, which she helped found.

As to how she expects to fulfill the demands of her new role at DCD, which is coeducational, she says her true passion at the core is helping children pursue their aspirations, whether they are a boy or a girl.

Students Excel on New England Math League Test The results of the New England Math League Contest were announced last May. Each year all students in Grades 4 through 7 take the exam. In Grades 4 and 5 they have 30 minutes to answer 30 questions, and in Grades 6 and 7 they have 30 minutes to answer 35 questions. The questions on the test are conceptual, testing students’ ability to think through problems rather than memorize algorithms.

All students receive a certificate, and the top scorer in each grade receives a book. The highest scorers in each grade were Avery McKay, Audrey Volpe, Christopher Ahn, Abigail Riordan, and Caroline Sullivan (Grade 4); Alex Fuqua, Kenzie Kelly, and Gabby Rayev (Grade 5); Rachel Mann, Demetri Tsoumbanos, Angela Giordano, and Brady Chitkara (Grade 6); Andrew Ko, Jackson McGuire, and Nick Whalen (Grade 7).

Middle School Students Earn National Latin Exam Awards

a 40-question exam involving all aspects of Ancient Rome.

The exam is given worldwide once a year and covers language and grammar, comprehension, mythology, derivatives, literature, Roman life, history, geography, oral Latin, and Latin in use in the modern world.

Eight students earned awardwinning scores on this year’s exam, reflecting their hard work and commitment to learning Latin.

He is co-chair of the Family Advisory Council of the Cumberland-Gulf group of companies, a familyowned business based in Framingham, Massachusetts.

George graduated from Belmont Hill School and received a bachelor’s of science degree in automotive engineering from the Franklin Institute of Boston. A number of new faculty and staff members greeted students at the start of school in September.

Emilie Liebhoff joined DCD in July as its new Director of Admissions and Assistant Head of School (see article on the facing page).

Kristie Gillooly Dean ’02 has joined the Middle School arts department where she teaches digital photography.

A professional photographer, Kristie lives in Peabody with her husband Archie.

Jaclyn Piccirilli is a teacher in First Grade, assisting Pamela Senese, and she is also helping out in the Extended Day Program in the afternoons. Jackie, who earned both a B.S. and M.Ed. from Bridgewater State University, lives in Mansfield.

Phil Holden has joined the Buildings and Grounds crew. He comes to us with ten years’ experience as a facilities supervisor. He lives in Walpole with his wife Christine, a Second Grade teacher at DCD, and their daughter Ella.

Tim Mann Concludes Term as Board President Tim Mann called himself “Head Volunteer” during the time he served as President of DCD’s Board of Trustees. Having served for eight years as a trustee, the last two as President, Tim will continue to stay involved, agreeing to chair the Head Search Committee in addition to his many other volunteer activities.

Prior to his term as Board President, Tim served for three years as Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee.

He also chaired the Executive Committee and served on the Committee on Trustees, Audit Committee, and the Core and Steering Committees of the Thrive Campaign.

Newly appointed Board President Sheila Hiatt paid tribute to Tim’s years of service at the Annual Meeting on October 23.

“During Tim’s tenure as Board President, he redefined how we should all look at our roles at DCD,” she remarked. “He has inspired us to follow his lead and ‘step up’ for our children and future generations of DCD children.”

She also noted his many achievements during his tenure as President, including helping to raise more than $10.5 million for the Thrive Campaign, overseeing the addition of a brand new wing and renovations to the Lower School, and a new pool house and playground, in addition to strengthening the commitment to growing the school’s endowment.

Addressing Tim, she said, “You are leaving behind a great legacy of generosity and commitment—one that the rest of us will attempt to follow.”

This was an amazing season that ended with 10 wins and 1 loss, only 2 goals away from being undefeated! What truly made the girls so much fun to coach was how well they played together.

From defense to offense, our players worked the ball up the field with purpose and skill. In 11 games, the team scored 140 goals. What I am most proud of is their collective 53 assists this season. The Eighth Graders were instrumental in the team’s success, led by captains Georgia Cabot and Mimi Cabot. The Seventh Graders added depth to the team, and I look forward to coaching them again next year. With good defense and solid goal tending, our opponents only scored 67 goals. —Deb White

A determined tone was set early with a dramatic, come-from-behind overtime win against Belmont Day. The squad also battled Meadowbrook in two thrilling matches that both ended in ties. For their outstanding leadership, Patrick Shiel and Michael O’Connell earned the respect of their teammates and were recipients of the Coach’s Award. Seventh Graders helped out in each practice and game by alternating between the JV and Varsity teams. Finishing 5-2-1, the girls improved both individually and as a team. They worked hard each practice and improved their stick skills and communication on the field. They learned to make connections in the midfield and in front of the net to come up with many goals. With their excitement and energy, the girls kept a positive attitude through the wins and the losses, encouraging each other throughout the season. :Yk]ZYdd Last spring, the DCD baseball team was excited to return to its home field on campus for the first time since the spring of 2011 when the Lower School construction began. The team consisted of 15 players in Grades 6–8, led by Eighth Grade captains Connor Glynn, Evan Landry, Wil Linell, and Colin Mann. The team had a very fun and productive season working on their skills in practice and competing hard in games.

One highlight from the season was the team’s 5-3 win against Fenn, which featured a home run

by Colin Mann that landed on top of the Lower School building, an excellent catch in left field

by Evan Landry, and a three-inning save by Wil Linell, who struck out eight batters. The team finished the season with a record of 7-5. —Dan Balk

In between the dedication and hard work was plenty of time for fun bus rides and enjoyable practices.

With only three returning players, the new members of the team worked hard on learning the fundamentals of the sport. Early season emphasis on groundstrokes, net play, and doubles strategy led to solid play later in the season. he signs of a vibrant community are all around us, from the sounds of children at play on the recently completed playground, made possible by a gift from the Class of 2014 parents, to chatter in the halls about the upcoming Trim the Gym hosted by the Parent Association. It was a busy and productive year, one that could not have happened without you.

The Thrive Campaign raised more than $1.5 million in cash and new pledges during the past year and will continue to focus on the endowment as a critical priority for the school. We are grateful to Steering Committee members Mark Alperin, John Connors, Sheila Hiatt, Tim Mann, and Skip McKee, and the entire Core Committee for all their efforts.

The Annual Fund surpassed its goal this year, raising $608,900, thanks to our team of 68 parent Ambassadors led by Co-chairs Curt Burmeister and Suzanne Ibbeken. For the fourth year in a row, 100 percent of faculty and staff contributed to the Annual Fund. They were joined by 97 percent of parents in making a clear statement of support for our students and faculty.

The Alumni Association continues to gain momentum under the leadership of President Erin Keith Epker ’86 and newly named Vice President Liza Connelly ’81. Many successful events took place this year, including a Happy Hour and Networking event in Boston, a Reunion Luncheon at the Fair, and the announcement of the second recipient of DCD’s Alumni Award, John Woodard ’52, at a reception during Alumni Weekend.

In March, A Celebration of the Arts and Auction was a true community-wide event attended by more than 200 parents, alumni, parents of alumni, faculty, staff and friends, many of whom contributed art and other items to raise more than $50,000 for faculty professional development and student financial aid.

These initiatives and many others would not have been possible without the leadership and support of DCD’s dedicated volunteers.

Liza Connelly ’81 Named Vice President of the Alumni Association

W

hen Liza Connelly speaks of DCD you can’t help but feel a sense of extraordinary connection between a school and a family. Even as she explains which home she grew up in, she describes it in terms of DCD connections. “I grew up on Lowder Street, in what people used to call Tim Jackson’s house, a house that I later learned was Temple Grandin’s before we came.”

The Connellys were and are a DCD family in every sense of the word. Liza’s mother Fanny Connelly, now Fanny Cracknell, held a wide array of positions at the school. As a trustee, admissions director, and history teacher, she was deeply engaged in the life of the school, and she was especially proud of her role in introducing “Facing History and Ourselves” into the Eighth Grade curriculum.

For Liza and her siblings—all four Connelly children attended DCD—there were no misgivings about attending a school where their mother was a prominent figure; it was very much a happy family affair.

Despite having her mother as a teacher, she received no favoritism. “If anything,” she remembers, “I had to work extra hard to get her attention. One day, when I was following her figure moving down the hall—she was lost in thought and I was trying to get her attention, calling Mrs. Connelly, Mrs. Connelly.

When I couldn’t seem to get her to hear me, I found myself calling out ‘Mom, mom!’ She immediately turned around.”

A member of the Class of 1981, Liza remembers her days at DCD as an “overall all-around amazing experience.”

“I had art with Katy Hutchins, shop with Mr. Patriarca, music and plays with Mrs. Wales, field hockey with Ms. Hall and Mrs. Grew, English with Mrs. Grant and Mr. Emmons, math with Mr. Jackson, and history with my mother.”

For Liza, the well-rounded curriculum, with art, music, and sports included as valued and integral parts, was critical to the learning process. “Sports taught us how to work together, support and help each other. Arts taught us different ways of fixing and processing information.” Her mother, she notes, still has some of her old DCD art work on her walls.

“Perseverance and discipline of study” are the words she uses to

Arts taught us different ways of fixing and processing information.” describe some of the enduring skills she took away with her from DCD. “I learned how to tackle difficult subjects and ones that might not come easily to me. It was a great foundation for me. I learned that what’s important is not that you always get it right, but that, when you don’t, you keep at it. You keep trying. It was a foundation that supported me in life and all through college, grad school, and law school.”

After a year at Nobles, Liza’s family made a move from Dedham to Wisconsin.

In Wisconsin, Liza attended the University School of Milwaukee and later Miami University of Ohio. A defining experience for her would be her junior year abroad in Luxembourg. The excitement of working in an international setting drew her to make a decision to return. After graduation she lived and worked for three years in Europe, first for State Street Bank and later for Brown Brothers Harriman. Liza laughs when she talks of her path into finance. “It wasn’t something I could see coming. My mother was somewhat shocked. I was never good at math, but my

DCD foundation in perseverance stood by me.”

In 1992 Liza moved back to the Boston area. “Wisconsin was a good experience, but we always loved it here.” Following up on her experience in finance she pursued a law degree, specializing in tax planning and wealth management. At the same time, about 10 years ago, she and former classmate Heidi Greenman, now Heidi Baltimore, reconnected when they discovered that they lived only a few blocks from each other. Soon they were in touch with other alumni.

“When we heard of the 30th reunion coming up in 2011, we decided to come back.

It was a wonderful experience,” she says. “We were struck by the thread of continuity and comforted by the fact that as much as the campus and buildings have evolved, the vibe, the feeling, the atmosphere, was the same.

It was still very welcoming, comfortable.

At the Fair and in classrooms, we saw the same nurturing atmosphere, the same small classrooms. We saw teachers paying attention

to students. We saw students who felt themselves valued as students and as members of the DCD community.”

Always learning, always ready to take on new challenges, Liza is moving on to a new position at Boston Private Bank and Trust while starting in her new role at DCD. As vice president of the Alumni Association, Liza hopes to get alumni more involved. “I’m honored to be following in Erin’s footsteps and to be able to benefit from her assistance and advice. I want to give students the opportunity to connect with alumni, to see what paths they followed, what careers, interests, what their philanthropic activities might be. From age 4 to 14, we don’t think really of anything beyond high school. I want students to see what life can be like after high school, what the future can hold after DCD. I think it’s important to provide financial support, but we can give back with our time and energy, too. I think it’s good for us, too, to see that students are still having the same amazing and wonderful experiences that we had when we were students at DCD.”

Asked if any class he took at DCD related to his work today, he mentioned Mr. Coakley’s class in animation. “DCD is unique in offering so many choices in the arts,” he said. “Encouraging students to pursue their passion is what really sets it apart from other schools.” After the assembly, he reconnected with former teachers and then was a guest lecturer in an iMovie class.

Emily Lagasse ’97 spoke at morning assembly on October 27. She talked about how adopting a tiny puppy while serving with the Peace Corps in Togo, Africa, led to her starting her own business. Emily started Fedwell, a pet food company that produces healthy, grain-free dog food. She showed photos of her experiences in Togo, a video about Fedwell, and answered many questions about the benefits and challenges of being an entrepreneur.

John Woodard ’52, an attorney who has dedicated his life to public service, visited DCD on November 3, reminiscing at morning assembly about his experiences at DCD more than 60 years ago. He talked about the old school building on Bullard Street, clearing the “lot” where the school is now located, the early Fairs, and the impact of DCD on his experiences later in life. John received the 2014 DCD Alumni Award, which was presented to him at a reception during last spring’s Alumni Weekend.

We also attended the recent memorial service for Ted Gleason at Nobles where we reunited with Weezie and Rob Lawrence, Bill Chamberlin, and Duane Claussen. I retired two years ago as the headmaster of the Princeton Junior School after 40 years in independent schools, including six great years at DCD before we moved to Princeton, where Janet is in her 12th year as Dean of Admission at the university. I recently joined the board of the Green Mountain Valley School (VT), where my focus is strategic planning and professional development. At present, I am teaching a course on WWI at the Princeton Adult School and auditing history courses at Princeton University. Please give our best to everyone at DCD.”

Dan’s leadership, the “new school” was built, which included the Lower School building and the gymnasium/Kindergarten building. A plaque hangs on the wall today where the old school joined with the new school, which was known as “the bridge.”

On March 14, 1972, the bridge was dedicated to Dan, whose leadership and generosity assured the ongoing development of DCD.
