Dedham Country Day School Art and Literary Annual 2016

90 Sandy Valley Road Dedham, MA 02026 www.dedhamcountryday.org

History Nancy Bedell, Class of 1929, wrote the following about Dedham Country Day School’s annual literary magazine: The Jackdaw’s Nest was the name chosen for DCD’s literary annual, which first appeared in June, 1929. As a student wrote in the introduction to the first issue, “We had two contests for the name and cover design of this paper. Finally, we decided on The Jackdaw’s Nest, suggested by Teddy Lyman, and the design which you see was drawn by Jane Hamlin. Almost every child in the school has written a story or a poem for this book. We have tried hard to make it a success, and we hope the readers will enjoy it.”

In 1977 Dedham Country Day School changed the name of the literary magazine to PSP. The new title suited the publication because each edition included pictures (P), stories (S), and poems (P). When the publication was first introduced, student’s artwork was included, although this was not mentioned in Nancy Bedell’s brief history of The Jackdaw’s Nest. In 2007 the magazine underwent a name change once again. After the entire DCD community participated in two rounds of voting, the new name of the publication, Dream Create Discover, was born. In 2014, the annual became a full color magazine. There are a number of school traditions that have remained an integral part of what makes DCD a unique, exciting and interesting community, and the yearly edition of the school’s art and literary magazine is one of them. Students in the Primary, Lower and Middle School continue to submit work to be included in the annual publication.

Left: The cover of the first edition of Dedham Country Day’s literary magazine, published in 1929, was designed by an eighth grader, Jane Hamlin.

Night Lauren van Veen Grade 8 Night Does it scare you? Being alone in the dark? Standing in the city that hid you away? You can’t see anything, can you? Only the reverberation of your voice is present. Calling, calling… Among empty shadows walking by. Are you scared? There’s no need to fear shadows. What are shadows but simple, distorted reflections of humankind? You’re human, too. Did you forget?

I felt I wanted to protect you, but I couldn’t forever. Only you can let the colors of your imagination blossom, And paint the shadows that haunt you so. For you may not be a god, or even a grandiose hero You’re human; you’ve survived this long, And that in itself is enough to make anyone smile. It made me smile. Did you finally realize? You may not see it, but I can. Despite everything, it’s still you standing there. Your opportunity has risen, so take it while you have a chance. Just for this one fleeting moment, Even if no one is watching, The stage is finally yours.

I’m sure glad I… Susannah Ward Grade 3 ...went to Maine this summer. I liked going to Maine because I got to see all of my cousins. All of my cousins and sisters went tubing together. I’m sure glad I went to Maine because we watched movies with our cousins! Most of all, I liked going camping after tubing! A lightning storm happened and we all played soccer in the rain. We had parties that lasted until 12:30 a.m.! I also fell into the lake when we went camping! Those are some of the things we did in Maine. It was really fun in Maine!

If I were president I would........ ... give the elderly homes for free. (Sam Fallon-Bacardi) ...not let people smoke and if they did they would go to jail. (Gavin Joyce) ...fix the problems of America. (Avery Peterson) ...pay teachers more. (Ella Nye) ...make schools that have no people hitting one another and run the army so that they would do good things and fight for our country. (Warren Strominger) ... give money to all the homeless. (Connor Keohane) ...give money to poor people. If people can’t pay for school they can go to school for free. (Haley Medley) ...say no war. No guns. No bad people. And that’s how I would make this country awesome. (Owen Burke) ...make sure people had enough money to buy food. (Alyssa McGuirl) ...stop unfair behavior. I would also change the stop signs and put in traffic lights. (Matthew Kimball) ...let dogs and cats go to school. There would be no homework and no catch up folders. (Theo Edgar)

The Tale of Tom Turtle Maisie Gronemeyer Grade 2 One day, right after breakfast, Tom Turtle went outside to bask in the sun with his friend, Billy the Turtle. They saw their friend Osie Frog. She was splashing in the pond. She told them NOT to go to Caroline Raccoon’s den. Tom and Billy pretended to bask, but as soon as Osie Frog turned around, they ran to the woods in search of Caroline Raccoon’s den. Presently, Osie Frog had turned around and saw that they had left. But…she thought they wanted to bask peacefully. When Tom and Billy arrived to Caroline’s den, they hid. Caroline was outside of her den! Since they are turtles they were very slow and tried to run next to the bush, but Caroline saw them! She grabbed a net and put it over them. She left them there and went to get Crunch Fox. But…while Caroline was getting him, Tom Turtle called out to Owen Moose, then Brookie Snake and Katherine Turtle for help. Owen Moose ripped the net while Brookie Snake made the den slimy and Katherine Turtle spied out the window. Katherine would give the signal when Crunch and Caroline were coming. Suddenly, Katherine gave the signal and everyone hid. But…when Crunch and Caroline approached, they slipped and this gave the friends time to run and escape. They ran until they got to the pond. They saw Osie Frog. She was mad-mad-mad! She walked them into their sand castle and up the stairs and into their room. Their room had bunk beds that were made out of driftwood. Brookie Snake had sewn leaves together for blankets. They had to have a yellow room because it was a sand castle. Osie Frog told them to go to bed without dinner. Billy went over and turned off the light. But… as soon as he did, Tom and Billy went up to the roof and Tom took out his spyglass and he did not see Osie Frog, or at least they did not think so… So, they jumped off the roof and into the water! But… swimming underwater for a long time is hard for turtles. They were hungry, so they each caught a fish and gulped them down. When they came out of the water, they were stopped in their tracks! Osie Frog and Brookie Snake caught them! They took the boys up to the sandcastle, put them in bed, and turned off the lights. 14 Dream Create Discover

When I grow up, I… Gabe Salfity Grade 3 ... want to be an inventor. When I am an inventor, I will make cool things. One of my first inventions I will make will be a hovercraft. One of my other first things I will make will be hover boots. I already have two people that will work with me. They have good ideas, too, like me. We tell the others about our ideas. We are going to make amazing things! A funny thing that happened in our family was… Emma Mansour Grade 3 ... that once my Grandma made a cake. It was my favorite kind of cake, so I said, “How do you know my favorite kind of cake? I never told you.” Now, keep in mind, she does not speak English. When I said to her, that’s my favorite cake, she said one word, that word was “yesterday.” I had no idea what she meant by that. It was awkward and funny. That is one funny thing that happened in our family.

A funny thing that happened in our family was... Lela Lantigua Grade 3 ... that on my sister’s seventh birthday, we blew up her cake. It was so fun! It got everywhere. As my sister blew the candles out-bam! Ella loved it, but I was too little that I do not remember all of it. Ella’s face was covered in cake. The cake mostly got eaten by the dogs. It was vanilla cake so the dogs would not get sick. It was so fun!

I try to call for help but cannot speak It has my family and it’s chasing me. I can’t fight back for I am far too weak Now I am falling, nothing I can reach.

They say that dreams are like another world, Where one can go and live without the pain. Their mind awake but with their body curled Up fast asleep in bed, their thoughts remain. Though once upon a time I had a dream, That I left everyone and everything. ‘Twas not as lonely as the thought may seem. Awake, my life was back to suffering. There is no limit to a dream surreal, No goal too high that it cannot be reached. For if you can hold on and reach the wheel, You are the driver of the fate you seek. Believe the dreams you see at night inside Your mind, because the dreamer lied.

I look down and when I am close to ground I close my eyes and tightly hold my arms And I wake up at home all safe and sound No monster chasing me, just an alarm. The reasons are what you want to decline There’s stress and trauma, conflict, fear And dreams the scientists cannot explain Your deep desires, only known in here. My nightmares say what’s not already known, My dreams say not to go through it alone.

One day, Porkey the Porcupine went to gather some stuff for dinner. He remembered to never go too far. He found a grassy area to gather food. He said, “Who cares if it’s far?” But Mr. Owl saw him and grabbed him- yes, he did! He took him to his nest. He put him in a cage! He was going to make him his dinner! Porkey tried to escape. But…Mr. Owl stopped him. It was getting hot. Porkey was scared. But, he remembered that he had quills, so he picked the lock and then started to run. But, Mr. Owl started to chase him. It wasn’t very long until Porkey found a cave. He hid in it until Mr. Owl found him. When Mr. Owl found him, Porkey was trapped. But, Porkey yelled so loudly that Spiney and Spike heard him. So they started running. Then, when Porkey thought all hope was lost, Spike and Spiney were there. They rescued him and ran as fast as their legs could carry them. Finally, they were home! Spike and Spiney were angry, they said, “ No supper for you!” and sent Porkey straight to bed. From that day on, Porkey did not worry about Mr. Owl and never wandered too far again!

Hockey Patrick Gage Grade 1 Chapter 1: How to Play Hockey So, the referee drops the puck and one of the teams gets the puck. Then that team tries to score on the other team’s net. You have to play on ice with ice skates on. On defense you have to guard the net. You need a goalie and a bunch of defensemen. You can play offense and defense. On offense you have to shoot the puck into the net and pass the puck. Here is a tip: you have to pass a lot because you will have an open net. You can do a wrist shot. You need skates, and a helmet! Chapter 2: Fighting Fighting is bad in hockey. You will get in the penalty box and the other team might get a power play. A power play is that the other team has more power because the other team has more people. Fighting is caused by bumping into the goalie, or being mean. The end. Dream Create Discover 23

Three meditations on empty rooms:

The Dining Room Stephanie Abrego Diez Grade 7 The windows were open The streaks of dawn light poured in Chandelier cracked and broken. The long table is dusty Lonely cushioned chairs Empty and bumpy. It is dim and dark A lifeless painting of fruit on the wall Waiting for something to spark.

The Music Room Eleni Kolovos Grade 7 A small room Filled only with the murmur of the wind From the open windows; The piano in the corner with bench and all Tuned is ready to be played, but no one will ever grace The white and black keys again. A beautiful wooden guitar on a stand Music, capo, and pick out to be used But no one will ever pluck those steel strings. Chairs and stands covered with music Music that gets blown away by the wind Chairs who wait for a friend that will never come. There are silences everywhere, no music heard The music room has been abandoned forever.

Room Gabby Rayev Grade 7 The bed sitting there, useless, made because no one ever has slept in it; The desk, begging for attention, begging for someone to put anything on it. The window, light shining through it, hitting it non-stop day after day; The books in the shelves that no one reads, crumbling to dust as insects are the only things that ever see them; The posters, all of them peeling from the walls, all slowly going to their deaths in the trash cans when they stop being sticky; The light, its broken-down bulb flickering more than the hope inside it that it will ever get fixed; The carpet has the most wounds - it’s been stepped on for years, its soul and body getting crushed, but now it only serves as food for the moths as it slowly decays until it turns into just a moldy past; The walls: it is said that the walls see everything, and these walls have seen too much. The very people it once protected will destroy their outer covering of paint, chipping away onto the ground, knowing it.

Life is beautiful Some live long Others not so But no matter what The experience is shared

It’s like mushing bananas between your toes! It’s so gross! I hate it! Wet socks My teacher hates it! They are the worst things ever, Wet socks.

It’s the time in life When things seem to stop Or in some cases, Speed up Months turn to weeks Weeks turn to days Days turn to hours Until you reach the deadline Maybe it’s last minute Perhaps the night before Or maybe its gradual At a steady pace The worst is when It is expected You know it will come

Morning Oliver Riordan Grade 6 I wake up to the figure of my mother shaking me To awaken me from my slumber. “Just ten more minutes” I complain; As I wait for a reply I fall back under the spell. Again I wake to my mother shaking me to consciousness; I am now fully awake, observing that There are no songbirds singing about. I guess that is only in the movies, I conclude. As I think of sleep once more I suddenly realize That I have an English assessment this very morning; I rush out of bed and get my clothes on as Quickly and efficiently as I can. I dash down the stairs and gobble down my Breakfast with no further notice. Then I quip, “Quickly, Mother, I need to get to school, For Mr. Edie does not accept tardiness.”

Instead of hiding on top of a shelf. I am soon to recognize that this is my true self, This is something that signifies me No matter who thinks different of me, I now know that I can be me.

The Dark Energy Jason Sima Grade 4 “Forgive me,” said my former friend Collin. “The dark energy controlled me and I went maniac.” “Curse that energy,” I said. Now, you’re wondering what this is all about. I will start the story from the beginning. So my friend Collin and I were walking down the street when we saw a glowing, purple mist. The purple mist seemed to spot us, and it faded. “That was weird,” said my friend Collin. “Yeah, I think it was an illusion,” I said. Later that evening, we saw the thing, AGAIN! “I feel like we keep seeing things,” I said. Suddenly, the mist flew toward us and said, “I am the dark energy, and you have bothered me, so I am going to control you!” With that said, the dark energy flew towards Collin and swept around him until his eyes glowed purple. Then my former friend Collin said to me in a deep and evil voice, “I’m going to destroy you!” “Ahhhhh!,” I cried while I ran home. I got the closest thing I could find to a sword and smacked Collin on the legs. Collin tripped, and the mysterious dark energy flew out of him. “Forgive me,” said my former friend Collin. “The dark energy controlled me and I went maniac.” “Curse that energy,” I said. You run home and find the closest thing you can to a weapon. I’ll take care of him!”

Melancholy Night Emily Shih Grade 7 The night howled as it blew its last breath; The willows began to weep, drowning all that was below; The trees stretched their arms out for each other, but they never touched. The leaves trickled down like tears to the ground as the vines wound up the trees, trying to escape; The moon’s face was blank and the stars were dull, like all the life had been drained out of them; The path wandered aimlessly through the forest, trying to reach an end. Third Grade Family Biographical Stories I am Concetta Silver. I came from Canada on June 20,1947. I left because I wanted a better job and most of all because I wanted a better life. I came with my husband. I took a car for the journey. It took about six hours. The journey was very exciting. I felt very happy to be in the United States. I was worried I would not like it here. I became a United States citizen on May 2, 1991. I got a job as a teacher. I lived in New York. I missed my family that I left behind which were my mom, dad and my brother. I learned about Thanksgiving in the United States. I knew English. It was a lot easier. My husband and I had four children and sometimes I went back to Canada to see my friends. I had eight grandchildren. I am a lot happier because I got a job. by Cece Upton I am Delia Sullivan. I came over to America in 1901. I left my country so I could have a better life. It was terrible and smelly on the ship. I felt good going to America but on the ship it was wavy and there was not a lot of food. I was worried that I might not be able to enter the United States. I was happy when I got off the ship. After I went to Portland, Maine, I got a job and a house. I lived by myself but I missed my family and friends. I already knew English. I am glad I came to America. I got married and had two children and then I moved to Boston and had nine more children. My husband, Colin, worked on the railroad. I raised eleven children. I had twenty-two grandchildren. I enjoyed Irish music and having everyone over for Sunday dinner.

by Jillian Sullivan

My name is Henry Marti. I came from Spain, Chile and Germany. I flew on a plane to Germany and Chile to continue with my graduate studies. Then I met my future wife in Chile. Her name is Patricia. Her parents were born in Hungary and Austria. I also flew to America to carry on with college. I also wanted to come to start a new life. I became a professor in Washington, D.C. I still miss all of my brothers in Spain. Sometimes they come to visit me. I also learned about this holiday called Thanksgiving. At Thanksgiving we had turkey and other good food. I learned English at school. I am glad I came to America to get a new job and a new life.

by Jack Dufort

I am Rosa Waldrof. I came from Hungary. The reason I left was because of a famine in my country. In 1905, I left Hungary. The ship ride was really bad. The food was terrible, and everyone was sick. When we all got off the ship at Ellis Island, it was madness. I had no idea what to do, but out of nowhere there was a guide who spoke Hungarian, and he helped tell me what to do. So he told me to go upstairs to the registry room. In the registry room, there were a bunch of desks, and a man told me to fill out papers, so that’s what I did when I got all my papers together. My family picked me up, and we went to New Jersey. Then I married Andrew Nikovits and worked in a restaurant for a while. Then I stayed home to care for my thirteen children. I learned English in a class. I was happy in America. The End. by Owen Hotra Dream Create Discover 39

Taking Care of a Puppy Colin Dufort Grade 1 Cuddling: It’s cuddle time! It is so fun to cuddle with a dog. You can pet it. You put your hand back and forwards. Never pet a dog tail to head! Feeding: To feed a dog you need food, then you pour the food in the bowl! Some dogs eat food at night. Some dogs eat food three times a day. Playing: To play with a dog you need a toy. Dogs like bones and stuffed animals. Throw it and then it gets it and brings the toy back to you. He might drop it or he might go to his bed. Walking: Do you know how to take a puppy for a walk? First you need to get a puppy. Then you need to go with your puppy for a walk. You walk him places. You can walk around the neighborhood. Ode to my Dogs Owen Lynch Grade 4

Russian Blues are not really blue. They are grey cats. Cats are good pets because they do not bite. They can catch mice that are hiding in the attic. You can tell they are happy when they purr.

The Tale of Dave Raccoon Ella Nye Grade 2 Once upon a time there was a raccoon named Dave. He lived with Caroline Raccoon, Max Raccoon, and Mother Raccoon. But, Dave never listened to his mother, but his brother and sister did. One day, Dave asked if he and his siblings could go outside. Mother said yes, but she warned them NOT to go into Mr. Fox’s trashcan. But as you know, Dave never listened so Dave headed straight for Mr. Fox’s house! First, he found some old fruit and then some rotten beef. But as he started to eat, Mr. Fox spotted him! Presently, Dave’s siblings were playing tag and wondering where Dave was…Mr. Fox ran so fast after Dave and Dave got stuck in a fence. Luckily, Mr. Fox lost him, but he was still stuck! Right when Dave was going to give up, Nutty Squirrel helped him. But Dave ran into a bush. He looked to see if Fox was close, Dave ran to the gate and made it out just in time! Dave then ran as fast as his legs could carry him home! Dave ran to the door-quite out of breath! After he told his mother what had happened, Dave’s mother sent him to his bed without any dinner! Dave was very hungry but tried to distract himself and looked outside. Dave’s siblings were home and he was sad and so very hungry-he could have eaten anything! Max and Caroline Raccoon ate their dinner and brought their dessert up to their room that the three siblings shared. Knowing that Dave was hungry, Caroline gave him some of her dessert. Dave learned his lesson and went right to bed! Dream Create Discover 47
