les ateliers claus goes environmental and outdoors. In an impressive ziggurat erected with 60.000 recycled PET-bottles used for water and milk, contemporary composers and sound artists bring you their latest spatial works, peculiarly claustrum-made. Fifty people at the time can relax and experience this sonic inimitable phenomenon, radical but family friendly and immersive. A claustrum is a thin, irregular sheet of neurons that is attached to the underside of the neocortex in the center of the brain. It is suspected to be present in the brains of all mammals.Very little is known about the actual function of the claustrum. Anatomical hindrances combined with a lack of case studies have left many holes in the research on the claustrum. For these reasons, systematic studies of the claustrum have been sparse. Although the exact function of the claustrum remains to be veriďŹ ed, connectivity studies have shown that the claustrum plays a strong role in communication between the two hemispheres of the brain, speciďŹ cally between cortical regions controlling attention.

PETMAT exists! It is a unique platform of cooperation between an academic space and practise. The main topic we solve is the plastic issue in the world from consumption to its recycling. As the background of the group is Experimental studio at the Faculty of architecture and design in Prague, we are trying to raise public awareness with architecture made of plastic bottles, 3D printing with recycled material or designing new reusable shape of bottles. In 2014 we found out we are not the only ones obsessed with plastic pollution and looking for solutions. We collected around 30 examples of plastic bottle architecture and design, which we published in a book “150000PET bottles.” Now when installing our latest monument “PETOTEM” made of PET(b)ricks, les ateliers claus came across and invited us to come to Brussels in order to consult on Claustrum.

Since we designed and constructed around 20 installations made of plastic bottles, we became experts in this field. The workshop that took place with the Brussels architects was intensive and productive at the same time, where Simon was using a parametric tool to directly simulate the change of dimensions of the design depending on the acoustic curve. PET(b)ricks projects are constantly running and the bottles are being reused. The bricks used at TEDx Prague 2017 are now inside of CTU publishers cash desk being exhibited at Bookworld 2018 in Prague. Still its design is under development with new prototypes being designed and tested.

We’re bundling different forces, such as people in the architectural field who work in collaboration with experts in the sound-technical segment. All in order to achieve a unique sound installation. This sound installation produces a continues 3D audio experience in a dome shaped space. We start from scratch in order to construct this one-of-a-kind musical space. The musical technology and the way we’re listening to music are ever evolving and changing. we couple this fact with one of the biggest problem in our society: the (expensive) recycle problems.

Claustrum is a new enclosed sound- en concertspace in the shape of a temple dome and build up in recycled/ used materials. The inner shape has a geodetical shape and will function as an ambisonic en spatial sound system. The aim is to create a musical entity constructed out of materials of the past to construct a musical experience of the future, wherein an artist and audience can present and experience different forms of ambisonic compositions. The pavilion and musical sculpture created by les ateliers claus needs 10.000 recycled plastic bottles. The structure can shelter approximately 50 people. The materials needed to develop this dome are recycled plastic and mainly loads of PET-bottles.

In order to fulfill this architectural and musical dream we’re collaborating with people such as Guy Van Belle from the Ipem - University of Ghent, architectural bureau OUEST and Katerina Novakova & Simon Prokop from the Faculty of Architecture CVUT Praag. For the musical part of our dome we asked Caroline Profanter, Lieven Martens and James Tamborello to make compositions.

This collaboration has several important facets. There is construction of this temple-shaped plastic construction that is - according to us - never been done in our regions. Plus, next to the construction part there’s the extra aspect of letting the dome host creative and innovative musical compositions with a state of the art musical material. This construction makes the connection between a new listening experience and the question how we’re organizing our housing situation, where we organize our cultural events and of course this all in relation with the recycling issue.

OUEST Architecture — CLAUSTRUM : a PET-dome les ateliers claus (BE), Ouest Architecture (BE) and PetMat (CZ) joined forces and enthousiasm to create a temporary structure for different cultural summer events. We created this pavillion all made of plastic (bottles and rings), kind of 2.0 “folie” revisiting codes and formes of classical and ancient architecture language, in a montable and removable logic and system. Let’s kids, artists and visitors experience and enjoy the place.

De pop up luisterplek, gemaakt van gerecycleerde PET-flessen voor water en melk, herbergt plaats voor een 50-tal luisteraars. Stap binnen in deze prachtige, dromerige, ideale plek waar vervuiling plaats maakt voor een unieke, multi-zintuiglijke 360° geluidsbeleving. De soundscape is een compositie van hedendaagse geluidskunstenaars.

Supervlieg: per uur consumeren de inwoners van België 60.000 flessen drinkwater… met dit ongelofelijke cijfer gingen les ateliers claus, de Universiteit van Gent en Petmat uit Tsjechië aan de slag. Op welke manier kunnen PET-flessen worden gerecycleerd? Bijvoorbeeld door ze te hergebruiken bij het bouwen van poëtische infrastructuur. Deze prachtige installatie is een indrukwekkende landmark in het Park van Vorst.
