#MACROCK FANZINE

Page 1

The Norwegian eclectic rock / metal band StarratS of UfotofU is ready to release their second audiovisual concept album «#MacRock». It is scheduled for digital release on June 4th 2021. The album features 12 tracks of fast, energetic and playful metal tastily infused with elements from many other musical genres ranging from hardcore, punk, rock, blues and hip hop - interlaced by 6 evocative and sobering vignettes to cleanse the pallet between the main courses. Following the same conceptual framework as their 2016 debut album #DuckRock, with lyrics and visuals focused around the Duckburg universe, the band has chosen the legendary 80s TV hero MacGyver as inspiration for this second effort. Throughout the 45 minutes of punchy and catchy songs iconic characters from the TV show (like MacGyver, Jack Dalton and Penny Parker) each feature a song written from their perspective. The Crux of The Biscuit is The Catastrophe StarratS of UfotofU is part of the Neverton United band conglomerate, and is meant to be an outlet for ideas - both musical and lyrically - that doesnt quite fit into any of the other projects we tinker with. It is the sandbox where the answer to if this or that riff, arrangement or mood could work usually is answered by either «Yes, and…» or «Yes, but…». It is the mistress side project where we get to have fun, experiment and play with silly ideas that exceed the genres we normally work within. With the quote attributed to Prince in mind; «Too much freedom can lead to the soul's decay» we balance all this musical freedom with somewhat rigid conceptual rules for the albums. These rules are in a way a tribute to, a poke at or maybe just natural continuation of the tradition of the late 00s Harry Potter musical fandom phenomenon called Wizard Rock. In this genre the bands would, as a more elaborate kind of fanfic, write songs from the point of view of particular characters from the Harry Potter universe. We have fully embraced this idea, but apply its principles to other - less explored and / or unhip - fandoms. Our . first release consisted of songs dedicated to characters from Disneys Duckburg universe. Characters like Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge, Moby Duck, Gyro Gearloose and The Beagle boys all got a dedicated song. We called the album #DuckRock, tipping the hat to the wizard rock fad, and even before its release we were playing around with the idea of using MacGyver as the concept for the next album.

The only correct answer. Around the time of the release of #DuckRock one of the reviewers raised the question «Do we really need an album about Donald Duck?» before he went on to answer this with a hard «No, we don’t». I cant speak for the musicians, but for me that misguided or lazy cheap stab sent me hurling over the edge, and I promptly decided to do what I could to make #MacRock happen. The real question should of course have been if we really need another album about love, cars and booze? About sex, drugs and rock n roll? Yet another album featuring images of atmospheric landscapes, deep dark woods, ice peaked mountains, vikings gods, warriors in chainmail or epic tales of swords and wizardry? What about satan, demons, the living dead - or any of the other dime a dozen rock tropes? Of course we don’t need any of that - it has all been done before, and many times the productions have been quite well executed. So if anyone, reviewer or random listener, feels like raising the question «Do we really need an album about MacGyver?» The only valid answer is «Sure, why not?»

With a complete lack of respect. To be honest, I personally never cared much for MacGyver. As a pop cultural icon hell yeah, the memes are awesome - but when it comes to the TV-show I was always kind of indifferent or lukewarm. Sure, I watched a few episodes, and the show was probably alright, but the atmosphere was always so neat… clean… wholesome. I would have liked it a bit more gritty and edgy. Guess I was always more of an A-Team fan. A funny thing is this parallels my feelings towards the Duckburg universe. Of course, like any other kid from my generation, I was into the series as a young child. But at an early age I discovered comics like Asterix, Tintin and Spirou & Fantasio - and the magic of Duckburg faded fast. It wasn’t something I hated, still isn’t, but I just liked other stuff better. So why do I bother with these franchises that I can only manage to muster moderate feelings towards? Part of the answer probably has to do with StarratS of UfotofU guitarist and cocomposer Rui. He is a genuine fanboy of both Donald Duck and MacGyver… or maybe rather something of an otaku. He has played a crucial role in lobbying for these two universes to get the concept album treatment, and has enthusiastically sent me pics, links and ideas he would like me to incorporate. Other band members have been quite skeptical, and at times rather harsh critics, but his relentless enthusiasm prevailed. At one time I brought up that maybe he should be doing the writing, with all his knowledge and passion for the subject matter. He reasoned that if he was to write this album, he would want to include ALL the details - all the facts - and he would never be able to finish it. The nice thing about leaving this to me, he said, was that he knew I would be staying true to the source material, but at the same time I would treat it with a complete lack of respect. He himself had too much respect for it. In a way that made a ot of sense to me.

A Question of Balance. So, while working with this project I have tried to balance my indifference with an awareness of the passion of the fans. Nothing is written or drawn with the intent of either disrespect or awe. Another perspective I have tried to keep in mind is that the group of hard core fans of MacGyver is relative small, and this album is not intended exclusively for the fandom. In a way this production is just meant as an eclectic rock album with a playful and quirky concept piecing it together, not a fan service for the MacGyverites. After all, «It´s just a collections of songs, bro…» The songs could easily hold their own individually, but when compiled on an album it would, as a product, probably suffer from the no holds bar musical approach, and without some kind of overarching conceptual glue sound a bit too erratic. An other way of looking at this production is that the individual songs are just part of a larger context. In our MISSION STATEMENT we declare that we make audiovisual concept albums. To further hammer out the integrity of the concept, I have toiled away to give the project a holistic visual feel that permeates everything from music videos and teasers, press releases and cover art to this elaborate booklet zine featuring character portraits, illustrations and articles. Just like the songs could hold their own, this zine could mostly be enjoyed without the accompanying musical score. So, in conclusion, what the hell is this product then? An album with a ridiculously over produced booklet? A fanzine featuring some pretty well produced musical tracks? The answer to both questions is of course either «Yes, and…» or «Yes, but…». A more pressing question might be «Why?!?» Why do we bother with all the pretentious conceptual shit? The answer is simple, and is neatly presented in the lyrics of the opening track on the StarratS of UfotofU album debut,: «We do it just because we can». That shall be the whole of the Law.

Literally No One: Les Inkwell: What the world needs right now is a concept album about MacGyver! The idea for an album about the MacGyververse has been floated since around the release of #DuckRock in march 2016, but a quick search through my inbox reveals that the first official correspondence about what was to become this album is an email from Rui that dates back to October 2017: «I´ve been thinking about the idea we talked about the other day… so I compiled a list of notable persons in the MacGyver universe… the original of course! I inserted a few links as well, but yeah, you will probably figure it out… Oh well, I should really be working…#MacRock. Rui» The list was, in order of priority; 1. MacGyver 12. Deborah 2. Pete Thornton 13. Mike Forrester 3. Jack Dalton 14. Maria Romburg 4. Murdoc 15. Lisa Woodman 5. Penny Parker 16. Mama Lorraine 6. Harry Jackson 17. Earl Dent 7. The Colton Brothers - Phoenix Foundation 8. Nikki Carpenter - The Cars: Jeep Wrangler, Chevrolet 9. Dexter Filmore 1946 Pickup, Nomad 1957 10. von Leer Brothers - Swiss Army Knife 11. Dr. Zito - The Houseboat When looking upon this initial list, Ruis stream of conscience sketch up of his grand vision for the album, I think we have covered a lot of what he wanted to include - either in musical form, or in the articles in this zine.

A quick look on the list also reveals many characters that did not make the cut. In memory of all lesser notable characters, in any series with a strong lead / a black hole: you might never get the credit you deserve for playing your part... but the finale result gets better for you doing it! And as the saying goes:

Those

who

Notes on the neologism, lexicaliztation, memetics and cultural impact of MacGyver.

Mykle had put fresh skins on his drums before the recording session for #MacRock. When miking up the kit he needed to cut a hole for the Shure Beta 52A microphone on the fresh skin of the bass drum, and went on a scavenging run through the office spaces on the upper floors. On his way back to the basement (equipped with a ceramic plate, box cutters and a roll of duct tape) he met a colleague wondering what he was up to with this unusual collection of gear. After Mykle had given an explanation his coworker responded with a laugh: «Damn, thats pretty MacGyver!» Little did he know just how fitting that statement was. This little anecdote can also serve as an example of the deep cultural impact the MacGyver TV show has had, and stil has, over 30 years past its prime. From TV screen to dictionary. Decades after the 7 year lifespan of the TV-show the term still occasionally pops up in popular culture. Some of its lingering presence can probably be attributed to constant reruns of the original showas a cheap day time TV option for networks, through parodies on popular shows like The Simpsons and Saturday Night Live, and to the cast of Mythbusters testing the science behind some of the MacGyverisms. Also worth mentioning is the recent hype due to «reboot that must not be mentioned» - but it can be argued that its evergreen presence has todo with more that air time. MacGyver, not as a show, but the character as a concept - an archetype - has been added to the pop cultural pantheon of deities.

An example of how the character concept has taken on a life of its own can be that over the years the term «MacGyver» has become an integrated part of informal language in the American dominated cultural sphere. According to Urban Dictionary the term MacGyver can be used as both verb, noun and adjective. MacGyver verb. 1. To use ingenuity to fix or remedy a problem using only the tools available at hand. 2. To jury-rig Your CD playa broke, huh? Gimme that string, a pencil, and a sock, and I'm a MacGyver it. noun. Someone who can regularly cobble together solutions to problems using only the tools available at hand. Man, I be a regular MacGyver when it comes to making bongs by user Eldezod, June 17, 2004

MacGyver adjective. One who performs great feats of ingenuity on a moments notice. Tom just pulled a MavGyver. He made a helicopter from two soda cans and a shoelace. by user MacGyver101, June 17, 2005

MacGyver

VERB [WITH OBJECT] informal US Make or repair (an object) in an improvised or inventive way, making use of whatever items are at hand. https://www.lexico.com/definition/macgyver

When used in everyday language the term has less to do with the actual TV show or its main character, but is rather referring to the prolific and notable traits of this fictional character; ingenuity, resourcefulness, handy and creative. MacGyver as a term can be compared to other literary neologisms like something being «quixotic» or someone being a «scrooge» or a «pollyanna».These terms can even be used and understood by people not intimately familiar with its origin because they have been accepted into the mainstream culture as more universal concepts. The term as a verb, «to MacGyver something» has a dedicated «word at play» article on the Merriam Webster webpage and has even made it into the prestigious Oxford Dictionary - elevating its status from just slang to quite official. This fact is also reflected in a relatively new image macros, the classic black frame, white bottom text featuring a photograph of Macgyver and the text «So awesome that even his name is a verb».

The MacGyver memeplex. MacGyver has in the last decade, to no ones surprise really, also spawned several Image Macros and Meme Templates. The majority of these memes are conveying more or less the same «units of culture» conveyed in the neologism and lexicaliztation: problems can be overcome with knowledge, improvisational skills and a few random household items. The majority of memes are creative plays or parodies of Macgverisms. In meme form, as customary for the cultural format, the content of these have had a notable shift in the humorous, exaggerated and absurd direction: «I can make a nuclear reactor out of an orange and a paper cup». .

Most of the memes uses a classic image macros format with Top Text and bottom text over a low quality screenshot from the TV show. From my superficial research into the MacGyver memeplex it seems the meme has a healthy population, with examples of both creative reproduction and intertextuality and with a spread that happens both through remixes and through mimicry.

In spread and popularity the memes have had a notable presence but can in no way compete with the diversity and numeric mass of viral fads like the memeplex created around fellow 80s action hero Chuck Norris. As a measurement of community worth, major webcomics like XKCD and Cyanide & Happiness both have featured variants of (or their own spin on) the MacGyver memes - and on both Reddit and on the Penny Arcade forum there are several treads dedicated to MacGyver related discussions.

“MacGyver Gets Lazy” https://xkcd.com/444/

https://explosm.net/comics/2362/

Dating memes is often difficult, but through referring current events I can be certain that at least one of the memes has been made in 2020 or later. Notable Subgenres In addition to the more traditional creative reproductive variants, there are a few intertextual variants to be found. One example can be the «What would MacGyver do» subgenere playing on the mid 90s WWJD bracelets worn by Christian youths as a reminder of their belief in a moral imperative to act in a manner that would demonstrate the love of Jesus through the actions of the adherents. This meme variant is playfully celebrating MacGyver as an Icon of creativity and resourcefulness, and that one should look to his example for guidance when a difficult practical problem has to be overcome. In the same vein you can find prayer candles and coffee mugs with MacGyver depicted in religious imagery with the text «MacGyver, patron saint of engineers».

The «MacGyver was here» is another subgenere, a crossbreed between the classical overengeneering memes with the MacGyverism tropes. The form is usually Anon or User photographs of haphazardly and over the top home made contraptions, with or without the caption «MacGyver was here». This is not to be confused with the more self serious, esthetic pleasing and potentially useful DIY, life hack and «how to»- guides from sites like Pinterest and the very sad macgyverisms.wonderhowto.com. To qualify for the genre the «MacGyver was here» memes should, by design, contain imagery of questionable ideas and lack of judgement combined with naive optimism and lousy execution.

The last notable subgenre can be labeled «The MacGyver facepalm» meme variations. There is one notable exception in the MacGyver memeplex that has a very different form than the others; a meme featuring Murdoc in a mash up with the worlds most interesting man meme template: “I don´t always die, but when I do, I don´t”. It is quite esoteric, but knowing the character it is pretty spot on!

When I was planning this zine featuring an article about macgyverisms was a given. Wiktionary defines a MacGyverism as: An ingeniously improvised solution to a problem. The term 'MacGyverism' was, hilariously meta, actually coined in MacGyver episode S2E3 «Twice Stung»! When introduced to MacGyver the character Joanne Remmings responded with: «Oh I've heard about you! You're the guy who does the whatchamacallits, you know, MacGyverisms; turns one thing into another?» In a way that suggests other people had used the term before in the same way. The term has since then taken on a life of its own, as shown in the article WELCOME TO THE MEMEPOOL and notes on his use of duct tape and paper clips as components is discuessed in articles DUC IT and THE PAPERCLIP CONSPIRACY elsewhere in this zine. In this article I wanted to take a closer look on the source material - the canonical MacGyverisms - so I challenged super fanboy Rui to compile a list of his favorites from the series. He provided me with the following index of the subject matter (and of course he provided everything in chronological order!): The Pilot: This episode was packed with MacGyverism… I guess they where trying to sell in the core concept of the series. My favorite from this episode was MacGyver plugging a sulfuric acid leak using a bar of chocolate… The Gauntlet: MacGyver uses a map in several unorthodox ways: to help open a locked door, to make a blowgun, knocking out a guard, as a shield, as a sled to traverse a steep sand dune - and lastly to patch a hole in a hot air ballon using the map and some duct tape.

Last Stand: MacGyver creates a thermite torch by collecting magnesium scraped from a bicycle frame and some iron rust in a long metal tube, and activated it with a roadside signal flare. The Prodigal: MacGyver made a harpoon launcher to fire a zip line using cleaning fluid, mothballs, a telescope, a pulley, some rope and a metal rod. The Escape: While in prison, Mac used a newspaper, cotton balls and olive oil to make a papermache hot-air balloon for signaling his outside contact. Jack in the box: MacGyver created a distraction in order to escape from a mining shaft using carbide lamps, water, some flint, a rope and a rock hammer. Hell Week: MacGyver used acetic acid and ammonia found in a cleaning locker to create a smoke screen to bypass an infra-red motion detector high-voltage trap-door preventing him to get to a bomb. MacGyver using a paper clip for solving complex problems is a thing, no doubt! The paper clip is a recurring trope both in the text on the image macros and in individual memes dedicated to it. When writing the lyrics for The Hero I contributed to this cliché when including the line «…just with some gum, some string and a paper clip». At the time it felt like a natural thing to include - «It is typical of MacGyver to use a paper clip to jury-rig something» I told myself. Later in my research of the series I could, quite staggered, only find 4 episodes from the original series where Mac actually uses a paperclip: In "The Pilot» (s1e1) MacGyver shorts out a missile timer with a bent paper clip causing the timer to stop and stopping the missile from detonating. In «The Heist»(s1e5) MacGyver creates a distraction by attaching a paperclip to a piece of string, slipping the paperclip onto the back of a ladys dress, dropping the string on the ground. As she walks away he causes her dress do undo by stepping on the string. In «Trumbo´s World» (s1e6) MacGyver uses his Swiss Army knife, a paper clip and a fishing line to steal a towel from a clothesline.

In «Partners» (s2e18), trapped in the drivers seat of a car with a bazookas aimed at him, MacGyver is able to neutralize the bad guys and escape the car using his shoelaces and a paperclip in a contraption that makes the car lurch forward crashing into the enemies when he slips out of the door. And thats it! MacGyver only uses a paperclip in 4 out of the 139 episodes - thats only in 2.88 percent of all episodes! Suddenly the idea of MacGyver using a paper clip seems a bit exaggerated. Is these 4 instances really enough to justify my gut feeling and all the memes? I can only speculate, but it might seem like the connection between MacGyver and paperclips, as represented in popular culture, is just memory errors by the individual edge lords and memesters. Another interpretation of this phenomenon could be through the idea of a collective false memory, but that might bring us a bit too close to concepts like the Mandela Effect, and that is something we´ll leave for another album. A more likely explanation is that the clever use of a paper clip in the first season must have made a huge impact on the imagination of viewers and fans, to such a degree that the two became intertwined, resulting in somewhat of a myth. Like myths tend to do, the connection MacGyver + Paperclip took on a life of its own in the collective memory and imagination of the fandom. This myth must later have been picked up, rerinforced and Flanderized by the internet meme culture.

“If you can’t duc it, fuck it!”. That is what MacGyver taught us. Every single day after school MacGyver was present at our TV. A broken cannon? Duc it! A flat tire? Duc it! And probably, although it was never shown on air, out of codoms. Duc it! Duct tape is the answer no matter what the question is. And for true rockers the duct tape is the first thing to pack before a festival. If you’re playing at the festival, duct tape is used all around the stage. So while we are humming on “dududu dududu dudududududududu” we pack the duct tape. Or, to be honest, duct tapes. We need more. We need a whole bag of duct tapes. We use it to fix things, and to create fancy drinking devices, that hang from our party tent. You can even gag noisy neighbours that insist on screaming Aqua songs while being on a rock festival. Gag’em and bind’em. No need for ropes. And we owe it all to MacGyver. He showed us what a creative mind and a couple of rolls of duct tapes could do. If there ever was to be erected a statue of MacGyver it would be aninsult to both MacGyver and Richard Dean Anderson if it was created using anything other than duct tape. DUC IT! @LMGimse

Lost Treasure of Atlantis (May 14, 1994) MacGyver and his former college professor search for the Lost Treasure of Atlantis.

Trail to Doomsday (November 24, 1994) MacGyver, after the death of a close friend, discovers a nuclear processing plant in Great Britain and a plan to sell nuclear weapons.

Both films were set and filmed in Europe.

You need more? Well, you could always check out: MacGyver: Deadly Descent A 3D puzzle game based on the TV series was released on iOS and Android. MacGyver and the New Citan A series of short films made as commercials for Mercedes-Benz where Anderson reprised his role as MacGyver. The episodes were shot in Johannesburg, South Africa in July 2012 and the plot sounds like a real cringe fest. MacGyver now runs a mobile repair service with his daughter Caitlin, and despite his age, he uses his skills to overcome challenges like terrorists and a a robot soldier. MacGyver: Fugitive Gauntlets A 5-part comic book series made by Tony Lee in cooperation with OG´s creator Lee David Zlotoff and technical advisor John Potter. The story has a contemporary setting but retains all the major elements of the show, including well known character Pete Thornton and the Phoenix Foundation as well as the much loved narration by the eponymous protagonist and MacGyverisms. The first issue was released October 10, 2012 with a new issue released each month ending with issue 5 on February 27, 2013. You still need more content you say? MacGyver: The Viritual Seasons 8-10. At the fan site macgyveronline you can find a fanfic section called Viritual Seasons, complete with DVD-style covers for each «episode». Fans like MacsJeep, Rocket and Sanguine have spun further tales about Mac and friends in elaborate write ups. Season 8 and 9 features 20 episodes, while season 10 so far only has 5 episodes. This fan labour has been kept up until as recently as 2015. So you still need more? Well I´m terribly sorry. Thats all she wrote. There are no other places to find more MacGyver material. Period. This is it, and this conversation has now come to a conclusion.

Sharp notification-dings ring out from all my interconnected devices interrupting my work flow. It is another text from Rui containing a low resolution screen shot from some MacGyver episode: «Here is an idea… we probably should include a picture of the houseboat in the booklet». I sheepishly reply with «sure, thats an idea» - and make a note in the rapidly growing document «MacRock Booklet Ideas». Months later, when unenthusiastically following up on the houseboat idea, it became clear to me that this was just one of many of MacGyvers residences throughout the series. From the top of my head I could not remember any other shows where the main character moved houses several times, and this sparked my interest. Here is an overview of all the places the MacGyver character lived, and some funny and interesting tidbits i stumbled upon when researching this subject. Season 1 episode 1 «Pilot Episode» Griffith Observatory 2800 E. Observatory Rd., Griffith Park, LA According to wikipedia it is implied early in the first season that MacGyver lives in The Griffith Observatory. In a blog post on The Agony Booth post author Ms. Avery puts it like this: “After the credits, we’re back at MacGyver’s place. Which is actually an observatory. I’m pretty sure living in an observatory when you’re not actually an astronomer is the dictionary definition of “obnoxiously quirky”.

Multiple episodes, season 1 Private Home 317 Ocean Front Walk, Venice Beach According to a post on themacgyverproject it is later in the first season obvious he lives above the Coney Island stand in Venice Beach. The site also has a neat «shooting location adventure guide», and if so inclined, one can go on a pilgrimage to many of the iconic sites used in the series. Multiple episodes, season 2 Private Home 156 N. Larchmont Boulevard, Los Angeles Wikipedia states that in seasons 1 and 2 MacGyver was portrayed living in a waterfront apartment in Venice Beach. This is not totally accurate, and according to the locations listing on rdanderson.com he actually lived in two different apartments (both relatively close to Venice Beach) during season 1 and 2. Multiple episodes, seasons 3-6 Houseboat, Private Home Bute Marina, Coal Harbour, Vancouver In season 3, he moved onto a houseboat at an unspecified location, though implied still to be in Los Angeles (the actual shooting took place at Coal Harbour, near downtown Vancouver). In an interview Richard Dean Anderson have stated that it was executive producer Henry Winkler that came up with the idea of MacGyver living on a house boat.

Season 4 episode 2 «Blood Brothers» Private Home 4532 Arthur Drive, Delta In this episode we get to see the house where Mac lived as a young boy. Past and present starts overlapping as MacGyver remembers a fatal shooting accident from his youth while in the present he is trying to stop his friend's son from using a gun to defend himself against drugdealing hoodlums. This episode is also said to explain MacGyvers aversion to guns. Multiple episodes, season 7 Private Home 1421 Abbot Kinney Boulevard, Venice In Episode 127 it is revealed that MacGyver’s houseboat burned down in a fire, and that this was the reason he moved into the loft apartment. In reality the show’s production had moved from Canada back to LA, and since the marina which housed the houseboat was beginning to be dismantled as part of the redevelopment project for that part of Vancouver City, external filming of the houseboat was no longer an option. This highlights the most probable explanation of why different apartments where used throughout the series, mundane things like access to locations, production issues and the temporary relocation from LA to Vancouver for seasons 3-6. But when searching for a clever idea, or an angle, to summarize this article I came across a few golden nuggets taking this to a more mythical level: Several blog posts about Diogenes and philosophy for change, where the authors enthusiastically brought the MacGyver character in as a form of role model. In one of these blogs Tim Rayners urges the reader to consider the attitude MacGyver displays towards change. He says the character is too stoic to worry about what is out of his hands, and rather confronts

each new challenge head on and reveals it as an opportunity to apply his knowledge and skills. MacGyver being an embodiment of change could maybe be an explanation for why it just works for the character to move houses all the time? The living arrangements are usually not explicitly addressed in the episode mythos, but often acknowledged without any explanation. The fans seem to just adapt to this with an «ok, so he lives here now» -attitude. It is quite peculiar, but well established in the fandom, and in a strange way it goes hand in glove with the general MacGyver character myth. A more disrespectful and speculative theory could be that MacGyver, beneath the wholesome and clean cut facade, was somewhat of a player and had to move houses to get away from ex-girlfriends? There are several episodes featuring his ex-es, like Debra Easton (ep #29), Lisa Kohler (ep #45) and forest ranger Karen Miller (ep #63). And who knows - there might be many more - after all, the series was set in 80s sleaze culture capitol Los Angeles.

«For I'm the type of boy Who is always on the roam Wherever I lay my hat, that's my home» Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home)

by Marvin Gaye, but often wrongly credited to Paul Young, after his 80s chart topping tearjerker cover version.

My absolute favorite of the MacGyver memes is the one with an empty toilet roll and the caption «what would Macgyver do?». It combines two non-related ideas in a clever and elegant way, its visualization is simple and snappy and like most toilet paper it has more than one layer! If this was a meme review I would rate it a 10/10 - flawless perfection. At the time I was planning this booklet and trying to find a distinct and interesting visual style I had been playing around with trying to merge the esthetics of stencil street art with old religious and occult woodcut imagery. Naturally the WWMD meme came to mind, and combining all these elements I made a proof of concept illustration of RDAs head transposed on to a religious icon. I sent the finished illustration to Rui, but he was not particularly pleased with the result. I tried to explain my thought process and that the idea was a spin on the WWMDmeme, but he made it quite clear that this was blasphemous, maybe not towards Jesus, but certainly towards MacGyver. Disappointed I reworked the overall design, discarded much of the religious undertones but kept the stencil art - Obey Giantesque inspiration. Months later, the booklet was starting to take form, and I was doing research into the different MacGyver meme-templates. Searching for that specific meme with the «what would MacGyver do» caption, I came across an obscure blogpost.

The post was published on the blogspot platform in 2005 by a user named Nic. The author presents, more or less tongue in cheek, a theory that the original creators of the show might have written the MacGyver character as a modern day Messiah! Even the author acknowledges that this theory might be a bit far fetched, but then goes on to list several arguments that might support the idea. These are condensed bullet points of the similarities found by the author: - The MacGyver character is non-violent. - In a typical episode MacGyver helps someone in trouble, and in a way gives them a second chance in life. - The level of knowledge, resourcefulness and ability to craft about anything from almost nothing... - The character being a rambler with no fixed place to live (or several semi permanent residences). - The lack of worldly possessions, with only the clothes on his back and his ride. - The fact that he is working for The Phoenix Foundation is, according to the author, a dead give away. - His ability to tactfully and respectfully turn interested women away, and as the author puts it «clearly not a sexually motivated man». The blog post finishes with the author imploring us to watch the show in the context of MacGyver being a modern day Messiah. Based on my own research I think the author is missing a few points and the arguments aren’t good enough to successfully convert me to this way of interpretation of the character. Regardless, the idea presented is a lot of fun, and in a way goes hand in glove with the WWMD-meme and the early proof of concept illustration made for this project. #DuckRock was always intended as the first in a series of albums made within a strict conceptual framework. In the planning of both #DuckRock and #MacRock albums many dozens of other ideas have been floated, broadsided and sunk. Examples of ideas for concepts that never reached the shore can be: #KnightRock. An exploration of the 4 seasons of Knight Rider. A cheesy 80s esthetic I would be very comfortable working within and do my best to disfigure. Possibly «big in Germany», which also is big on metal, with the possibility of an overlap in audience! The Hoff never made the cut, and I am unsure if that might be for the best? #PokeRock. With an emphasis on season 1 and 2 of the anime. Ash, Brock, Misty, Team Rocket and 151 weird creatures to make songs about! This was one of my top picks and I still fantasize about forcing Gimse to use his most gravely high pitch voice for a full song of heavy riffs and blast beats with «Pika-Pika - Pikachu» as the only lyrics! I voted for, 5 voted against - damned band democracy! #FraggleRock. Childhood nostalgia and a diverse cast of strong characters that would be a perfect fit for an eclectic collection of songs: Uncle Traveling Matt, Boober, Sprocket, The Gorgs, The Doozers and Marjory the Trahs Heap… whats not to love about this idea? According to band consensus apparently a lot - and sadly I doubt this awesome album will ever become a reality. When #MacRock was initially pitched as a contender for the full StarratS of UfotofUtreatment it was, like the examples above, also met with skeptical disbelief by many of

the musicians. There was discord and dissent - and two band members flat out stated they would not participate in the project if MacGyver became the theme. This idea could easily have been scrapped at an early stage, but it had one advantage none of the other ideas had: genuine passion. It has been been insinuated in other articles that guitarist Rui have held a lot of sway in landing MacGyver as the theme for this concept album, and without his passionate advocacy and relentless enthusiasm we would surely ended on a very different note. During the course of the project it became more and more clear to me that his engagement was deeply rooted and authentic. He was, and still is, a true fan! I know from earlier projects that Rui is fond of lists, and I knew he had some MacGyver related lists from the preproduction stages of the album. The original plan was to make a collage of these lists for the zine, but when asked to send me some pictures of these, he delivered much more than expected. Along with his DIY episode and character guide, he sent me a treasure trove of memorabilia.

Facsimiles of 16 page fanzine made by Rui in 2017 as part of this project: “The Ultimate Guide to the MacGyver Episodes”.These lists are both inspiration and sources used for several articles in this zine...

Left: Old and slightly yellowing newspaper clipping from a local paper telling the story of 14 year old Rui taping all MacGyver episodes on VHS, but due to some hardware malfunction, didn’t record episode 33. Complete with contact information in case someone could help him get hold of a copy. Not included in the article is that someone actually did reach out, and he was able to complete his collection! Under: Ruis complete collection on VHS.

Left: A more recent ad-on to the collection is the DVD boxed set containing all the 139 episodes and the two TV movies. Left under: One of the more obnoxious traditions in Norway is the russefeiring (English: «russ celebration»). High school pupils in their final spring semester take part in the celebrations are known as russ. Drunkenness and public disturbances are regularly linked to the celebration. Part of the tradition is getting a «name» choosen by ones class mates and having personalized cards printed - traditionally full of sleazy, dubious and embarrassing jokes and slogans. Rui was of course given the name “MacGyver”.

If this was a trial where a jury was to decide if Rui could be considered a true fan or not, this would be my primary piece of evidence: Rui´s well kept and neatly organized magazine and newspaper clippings from the mid 90s featuring everything MacGyver. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I rest my case. .
