FeatherFun!

Spring is the season of flower bouquets… and also of birds and their songs that greet us in the early morning. It’s the time of nesting and cheerful chirping chicks. This activity sheet about feathers offers two creative projects: making a feather bouquet and painting on feathers. Both activities are perfect for children from 5 years old to enjoy on their own Younger children will need some help and their results may be less precise… but what truly matters is always the experience the child has!

Step1:Collectingfeathersallyearround

During our many walks with the children, we collect every feather we find, and we don’t hesitate to peek into chicken coops to gather even more Over the course of the year, our collection grows, as do the creative possibilities To begin, I encourage you to display your feathers so the children can take a close look at them The variety of sizes, shapes, and especially colors will surely amaze them Be sure to have good bird and feather identification guides, and perhaps also some books that explain the life of birds.

Step2:Creatingafeatherbouquet

Go on a hunt for pretty, twisty branches that will really highlight the feathers Each child chooses one and attaches the feathers as they like using thin florist’s wire

Paintingonfeathers

Use colored craft feathers or plain white, black, or gray feathers (like those from a pigeon or crow). Show the children how to paint following the natural direction of the feather’s fibers.
