JANUARY

Thank you for your part as a faithful and valued ‘Prayer Partner’.

There is still so much about leprosy which is unknown. Research into this debilitating disease is vital to stop the spread and rid the world of leprosy.

As we draw closer to World Leprosy Day, let us keep the work of everyone involved in researching leprosy in our prayers.

Anandaban Hospital in Nepal is home to a world-class research team.

Work here not only looks at diagnosing leprosy for outpatients to the hospital, but also research into understanding this disease better. Pray for the researchers working here, that they will find a breakthrough in new ways to treat and cure this disease. Praise God for the partnerships forged with other countries, leading the way with an early diagnostic test for leprosy.

Pray for our partnership with University of Birmingham. Together we are finding new ways to treat ulcers caused by leprosy. Praise God for a new treatment, which dramatically reduces the time ulcers take to heal. Pray the trials in communities and hospitals in India, Nigeria and Nepal will be effective and that the team continues to make breakthroughs.

Pray for the work being carried out to improve our understanding about how leprosy spreads. Praise God for the health workers in Bangladesh who have been working with leprosy patients to carryout contact tracing. Pray God will help the team to find family members who have contracted leprosy quickly so that they can be cured.

As research into mental health increases around the world, praise God for the dedicated researchers looking to find new ways to ease the effects of leprosy on mental health. Many people affected by leprosy experience loneliness and isolation which can lead to depression and other mental health issues. Pray for new understanding to how to support these people.

FAITH

As we in the UK are largely vaccinated and learning to live with Covid, we are reminded that this is not the case for many around the world.

Our brothers and sisters across the globe are still living in fear. Fear as Covid still tears through families and communities. Fear because of poverty. Fear for safety with unrest and violence on the doorstep.

And fear of a leprosy diagnosis can be too much to take. On top of all this, many in the countries you are praying for are not able to worship and pray to our heavenly Father in peace.

And yet they still pray. They still have faith that God will help them. That He will walk beside them, protect them and meet their needs. We are all part of God’s family, and we are called to pray for one another.

We hear in the Bible that faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains. If faith this small can perform such a miracle, imagine the miracles that happen when we all pray together. We may not see or hear about these miracles, but they happen every day. Thank you for joining with us in prayer, asking God to ease the burden of people affected by leprosy around the world.

WEEK 1

WEEK 3

Praise God for health workers working in rural communities around the world. These dedicated people, many of whom are volunteers, search for people with the first signs of leprosy. Through their hard work leprosy is caught early and cured with Multidrug therapy.

Pray God will keep staff safe from harm as they travel, sometimes into dangerous regions.

Worship the Lord for His hand in developing a Covid vaccine. Pray the vaccine remains effective against any new mutations of the virus. Ask the Holy Spirit to breathe wisdom and compassion into world leaders, so that they ensure the most vulnerable in society are protected first.

WEEK 2 Pray for the implementation of the Hubs of Hope across Mozambique. Praise God for Arie, The Leprosy Mission Country Leader for Mozambique, and his team for their bravery.

They have continued to serve people affected by leprosy in a country gripped by unrest. Pray God will continue to protect the team and their families from violence.

WEEK 4 Thank God for all those who work in dangerous and challenging situations to support people affected by leprosy. From health workers in rural communities to surgeons in city hospitals. All are carrying out the Lord’s work, bringing light into darkness and hope to the hopeless. Pray the Lord will sustain and protect them, keeping them safe from harm and illness.

DECEMBER During this month of Advent, as we make preparations for Christmas, let us remember people living with the effects of leprosy in India. Just as there was no room for Mary and Joseph at the inn, there is often no room for people affected by leprosy in their own communities.

This month let us pray and remember the staff at four hospitals in India, supported by your faithful generosity.

Your compassion and kindness ensure there is always room for people affected by leprosy when they need it.

Praise God and give thanks for Dr. Manotosh Elkana, Chief Medical Superintendent, and his colleagues at Chandkhuri hospital.

Their skills bring healing to people living with the effects of leprosy.

Through the giftings and knowledge that the Lord has given them, they restore mobility and independence.

Their compassion heals emotional scars caused by the pain of rejection.

Pray for the staff and patients at Purulia Hospital, in West Bengal.

The hospital has grown from humble beginnings to a specialist leprosy hospital and community centre. The staff care for our brothers and sisters living in the surrounding rural areas, and from further afield. Ask the Holy Spirit to stand with Dr Jalaz Joezer Rahmi, Medical Superintendent, and the other staff at the hospital as they tend to the needs of every patient.

Muzaffarpur Hospital started as a small home for leprosy patients who were abandoned by their families. It’s now a fully equipped hospital, where thousands of people from several districts of Bihar and adjacent states are welcomed for leprosy treatment. Give thanks for Dr Millind Chavan and the hospital team. Their determination to help and care for people living with the effects of leprosy is unwavering. Pray God will protect them from illness and sustain them in their fight to end this disease.

Praise the Lord for the team at Premananda Hospital in Kolkata.

Pray for the community outreach workers who go into surrounding schools and tribal villages, helping marginalised communities to get the health care and social welfare they so desperately need. Ask the Holy Spirit to move within these places.

May He open the ears of people hearing the facts about leprosy, dispelling myths and ending isolation for people suffering because of this ancient disease.
