Treasure Island

Scene 1 Setting:

Bristol, England on an autumn day

Jim:

My name is Jim. Jim Hawkins.I’m a thirteen year old lad. I hail from the seaside town of Bristol. My family owns an inn on the cliffs outside the city.

Mrs. Hawkins:

Any sign of guests coming?

Jim:

No, Ma.

Aunt Tilly:

(Aunt Tilly comes out.) I’ve finished cleaning the rooms. Now if only we’ll have any guests to fill them!

Mrs. Hawkins:

It’s been weeks since we had any guests. How will we make enough money to get by?

Aunt Tilly:

Don’t worry, sis. We’ll manage.

Mrs. Hawkins:

With our bad luck, the only guest we’ll get is a pirate.

Aunt Tilly:

Don’t even say that. It’s bad luck.

Jim:

Are pirates all that bad?

Mrs. Hawkins:

They’d shoot you as easily as they’d look at you. (Jim shudders.) 3

Treasure Island

Mrs. Hawkins:

We don’t want any pirates staying at our inn, that’s for sure. Perish the thought!

Aunt Tilly:

Well, things seem to be quiet as the grave out here. Now is as good a time as any to review our pirate emergency plan.

Jim:

But we just practiced it this morning.

Aunt Tilly:

(calling for a girl) Sally! Come here please! (to Jim and Mrs Hawkins) We’ll get your sister out here so that we can all practice together. As a family.

Mrs. Hawkins:

Is this really necessary, sis? There are almost never any pirates any more.

Aunt Tilly:

We can’t be too careful. (Sally runs out.)

Sally:

What is it, Aunt Tilly?

Mrs. Hawkins:

Pirate emergency plan. Another rehearsal.

Sally:

Again?

Aunt Tilly:

Again. Now, Jim--

Jim:

Yes, mam.

Aunt Tilly:

You’re our look-out. When you see someone who might be a pirate approaching the inn, you ring the bell. 4

Treasure Island

(Jim rings the bell). Sally:

And that tells everyone in the house that a pirate is coming.

Aunt Tilly:

Good girl! Look at her pirate preparedness.

Sally:

I come out and say to Jim, all natural-like, “Who is it?”

Jim:

And once I’m sure it’s a pirate, I tell you “it’s all right” ---even though it’s not. And then I ask you to fetch the guest a drink.

Aunt Tilly:

That way the pirate has no idea that we’re on to him.

Mrs. Hawkins:

Meanwhile your aunt and I are getting our guns ready and about to attack the pirate!

Aunt Tilly:

Oh! It’s a brilliant plan!

Sally:

First I come out, all innocent-like, with a drink for the guest.

Mrs. Hawkins:

And while he’s drinking, I come out with a gun pointed at his head. I tell him to get lost or else!

Jim:

And then he runs for the hills.

Sally:

And never comes back. 5

Treasure Island

Aunt Tilly:

And if he does come back, then he meets me--and I’ve got a gun too. It’s a perfect plan. Now, all anyone has to do is just do their jobs. Remember, a pirate may not have arrived in these parts in years.

Mrs. Hawkins, Jim, Sally:

But there’s no telling when they might turn up.

Aunt Tilly:

No telling at all. Should we practice one more time?

Mrs. Hawkins, Jim, Sally:

No!

Jim:

I’ll keep a close look out, I promise.

Aunt Tilly:

Very good, nephew. You’re a good lad, Jim. Come on sis. Come on Sally, we’ve still got the baking to do for tomorrow.

Mrs. Hawkins:

Keep a look out, Jim. If we’re lucky, we’ll get one visitor tonight. And with any luck, we’ll go another day with no trouble from pirates.

Jim:

Yes, Ma. (Mrs. Hawkins and Aunt Tilly exits.)

Jim:

(seeing something in the distance) Wait! Who’s that? Someone is coming! I can’t tell if he is a pirate. There’s all this fog. (A pirate, Billy, who seems injured, approaches Jim. He drags a trunk behind him.)

6

Treasure Island

Captain Billy:

Some rum! Some rum!

Jim:

Are you ill, sir?

Captain Billy:

I won’t be when I’ve had some rum. (Sally, Jim’s sister, runs out.)

Sally:

Jim! Who is it?

Captain Billy:

Me name’s Bill Bones. Captain Bill Bones. I’ve come to stay at your fine inn. And I’ll have some rum and plenty of it.

Sally:

Jim, I’m scared.

Jim:

It’s all right, Sally. Fetch some rum for Mr. Bones. (After a moment, Sally comes out with a mug. She is followed out by Mrs. Hawkins who aims a gun at Billy.)

Mrs. Hawkins:

Now take your rum and be off with ya. We have no need of pirates here.

Captain Billy:

(as he grabs the mug from Sally, he takes out a knife and aims it at her neck.) Have ye no need of daughters because you’re about to lose a pretty one, my dear woman?

Sally:

Ma! 7

Treasure Island

Mrs. Hawkins:

What do ye want? We have no money.

Captain Billy:

I don’t need any money. Just a place to stay is all.

Mrs. Hawkins:

You’re not welcome here, sir. Move on. There are plenty of inns in town. There will be more people there. You’ll like it better. Sure, nobody comes out here.

Sally:

It’s true. It’s dead quiet.You’ll hate it.

Captain Billy:

And that’s just what I like about it. I don’t want to see no one and I don’t want no one to see me.

Jim:

We don’t want no trouble, sir. Just move on.

Captain Billy:

Now, calm yourself, lad. I’m a paying customer. If your ma will just lower her gun, I’ll lower me sword and show ye the gold I carry. (Mrs. Hawkins lowers her gun. Captain Billy frees Sally and takes out a bag of gold. He tosses it to Jim.)

Captain Billy:

Now I freed your daughter, free and easylike. And there’s a pile of gold that’ll keep this inn of yours going for at least another year.

Mrs. Hawkins:

We’ve no need of your money. 8

Treasure Island

Captain Billy:

Now, good lady, just one look at ye tells me that’s not true. And what I suggest is that ye let me stay here. I’ll be no trouble. Just a soft bed and a constant supply of rum is all I want. (Aunt Tilly comes out with her gun.)

Aunt Tilly:

Put your hands up, ye pirate-scum! Your pirate days are SO over!

Mrs. Hawkins:

It’s all right, Tilly. This man is going to stay in the inn.

Aunt Tilly:

But he’s a pirate!

Mrs. Hawkins:

He’s a pirate who can pay.

Aunt Tilly:

But we had a pirate emergency plan.

Mrs. Hawkins:

I know we did, sis.

Aunt Tilly:

I mean we said “no pirates.” And he’s a pirate. He’s got a pirate chest and everything.

Mrs. Hawkins:

But he can pay, Tilly.

Jim:

Look, Aunt Tilly. (He shows her the bag of gold.)

9

Treasure Island

Aunt Tilly:

I see. (she inspects the gold) Are we to sell our values for a bit of gold? A pirate is a common thief and a murderer! Are we to live in the same house as a common thief and a murderer? I don’t like it. And I don’t like yer throwing away my pirate emergency plan the FIRST time a pirate emergency comes along.

Captain Billy:

Quit yer yapping and gimme some rum!

Jim:

None of us like it, Aunt Tilly. But what are we going to do? We’re not going to kill him.

Aunt Tilly:

And why not?

Sally:

Because it’s not our way. You know that, Aunt Tilly.

Mrs. Hawkins:

There are four of us and one of him, Tilly. With our guns, I don’t think we’ll be too afraid.

Aunt Tilly:

(to Captain Billy) And we’re armed, Mr Bones. Do you hear me? We’re armed! So don’t try any mischief in this house. Do ye hear?

Captain Billy:

Quit her yapping and show me to my room. All I want is a soft bed and an endless supply of rum. Is that so much to ask?

10

Treasure Island

Scene 2 Setting:

Outside the inn

Jim:

And for a long time that really was all that Captain Bones wanted. By day, he’d roam the shoreline looking through a spyglass out at the waters---as though he was fearing that a ship would come ashore. By night, he would drink huge quantities of rum. And then one day he said to me.

Captain Billy:

I’ve got a job for you, young Master Hawkins.

Jim:

I already have a job. I help my aunt and mother run this inn.

Captain Billy:

Ah but I’ve got a job that pays. I want ye to keep a lookout for a one-legged man.

Jim:

A one-legged man?

Captain Billy:

Is there an echo? Yes, a one-legged man. If ye see him, run and fetch me as soon as ye can. If he sees ye, pretend ye’ve never seen nor heard of me. De ye hear?

Jim:

Maybe. What does it pay me?

Captain Billy:

A silver coin a week.

Jim:

So I kept my eyes open for a one-legged man. But no one-legged man ever came. 11

Treasure Island

Sally:

Meanwhile Captain Billy Bones had just about taken over our inn. (Captain Billy enters and sits down at the “fire”. He is singing.)

Captain Billy:

(singing loudly) Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum. Drink and the bad guy had done for the rest Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum!

Jim:

One day, the good old doctor came to our inn.

Sally:

He had looked after our father before he passed away.

Dr. Livesey:

I’ve just stopped in to say hello to the family.

Mrs. Hawkins:

Won’t you stay for a drink, Doctor?

Dr. Livesey:

I believe I will. I can hardly hear myself think with all this carrying on.

Captain Billy:

Silence between decks!

Dr. Livesey:

Were you addressing me, sir?

Captain Billy:

Yes. Why? Are ye deaf AND dumb?

Dr. Livesey:

I have only one thing to say to you. If you keep on drinking rum, the world will soon be quit of a very dirty scoundrel. 12

Treasure Island

Captain Billy:

That does it! (Captain Billy springs to his feet and attacks the Doctor. The Doctor does not even move.)

Dr. Livesey:

If you do not put that knife this instant in your pocket, I promise, upon my honour, you shall hang for it. (Captain Billy and the Doctor have a staring contest. The Doctor wins. Captain Billy sits down.)

Dr. Livesey:

And now, sir, since I know there’s such a fellow as you in my district, you may depend on the fact that I’ll have an eye upon you day and night. I’m not a doctor only; I’m a magistrate; and if I hear any complaint about you, I’ll have you hunted down and thrown out of this area. That is all.

Sally:

Soon after, Dr Livesey left on his horse.

Jim:

And Billy Bones was quiet that night...and many nights thereafter.

13

Treasure Island

Scene 3 Setting:

Inside the inn on a windy day

Sally:

Winter came with fierce winds.

Jim:

One day, I was setting the table for breakfast when two tall, pale men entered. (Black Dog and Blue Dog enter.)

Sally:

One of them was missing two fingers on his left hand!

Jim:

They each wore a cutlass, but didn’t look much like fighters. They didn’t look much like sailors either,

Sally:

yet there was something of the sea about them.

Jim:

(to Black Dog) What can I do for you, sirs?

Black Dog:

We’re looking for our friend.

Blue Dog:

A gentleman by the name of Bill.

Jim:

I don’t know who you mean. We only have one guest here at this time.

Black Dog:

And his name is?

Jim:

He is called the Captain.

Black Dog:

That’s him! That’s our mate! 14

Treasure Island

Blue Dog:

He has a cut on one cheek.

Jim:

Yes, he does.

Black Dog:

So...our mate Bill is staying here, is he?

Jim:

He’s just gone out for a walk.

Black Dog:

Which way, sonny? Which way is he gone?

Jim:

(pointing left) That way, sir.

Blue Dog:

(pulls out a sword on Sally)

Sally:

Not again!

Black Dog:

Now just you mind, lad, if you ever want to see your wee sister again, you’ll keep quiet when Bill comes--so we can catch him by surprise.

Jim:

He’s coming right now. (Black Dog hides behind the door, his sword at Sally’s neck as Captain Billy enters. Blue Dog also hides.)

Black Dog:

Hello, Bill. (Caption turns around in surprise. Black Dog lets go of Sally who runs to Jim. )

Blue Dog:

Yes, hello Bill. 15

Treasure Island

Captain Billy:

Do I know you?

Black Dog:

Come, Bill. You know us, your old shipmates, Bill, surely.

Captain Billy:

Black Dog!

Blue Dog:

And?

Captain Billy:

Blue Dog!

Blue Dog:

Ello, ello, ello.

Black Dog:

We’ve come to see our old shipmate at the Admiral Benbow Inn.

Blue Dog:

It’s been rough times we’ve had

Black Dog:

Ever since I lost my two claws here.

Captain Billy:

Yes, yes, but tell me why you’ve come. What do ye want?

Blue Dog:

What’s your hurry?

Black Dog:

Aren’t we friends?

Blue Dog:

Let’s all sit together and have a drop of rum around the fire.

Black Dog:

Boy---fetch us some rum. (Jim pours them some rum.)

16

Treasure Island

Jim:

They seemed to talk in hushed tones for hours

Sally:

And then they began to fight.

Jim:

And then they began to shout.

Sally:

And that’s when the sword fight began. Blue Dog and Black Dog: and Captain Billy were fighting. Suddenly---and without warning---Captain Billy had a stroke. He fell to the floor.

Blue Dog:

We must have killed him!

Black Dog:

Let’s get out of here!

Jim:

Sally! Get Doctor Livesey!

Sally:

Right away, Jim!

Jim:

Hang on, Captain Bones! Don’t die!

Aunt Tilly:

What is the matter?

Jim:

It’s Billy Bones! He’s sick.

Aunt Tilly:

If only we’d stuck to the pirate pre-paredness plan. Sis!

Mrs. Hawkins:

What is it? 17

Treasure Island

Aunt Tilly:

The miserable pirate! Now he’s dying!

Mrs. Hawkins:

Oh dear! Oh dear!

Dr. Livesey:

(entering) What’s happened?

Jim:

He was having a swordfight

Aunt Tilly:

A swordfight!!!

Jim:

And then he just collapsed!

Dr. Livesey:

I told him to stop drinking rum.

Mrs. Hawkins:

What’s happened to him, doctor?

Dr. Livesey:

He’s having a stroke.

Mrs. Hawkins: Dr. Livesey:

Will he live? He will, if I have anything to say about it.

Sally:

Doctor Livesey worked all night long. At last, Captain Billy Bones was out of danger and resting.

Captain Billy:

(weakly) A spot of rum! A spot of rum!

Jim:

No, Captain Bones!

Dr. Livesey:

Captain, if you drink so much as a drop of rum, you’ll drop dead. Do you under-stand me? 18

Treasure Island

Captain Billy:

And if I DON’T drink a drop of rum, I’ll drop dead. Do YOU understand me?

Dr. Livesey:

(He sighs.) Who were those men, Captain? The ones you got into a swords fight with.

Captain Billy:

Just friends.

Dr. Livesey:

Friends don’t kill each other.

Captain Billy:

When you’re pirates, they do.

Jim:

They must want something from you.

Sally:

Yeah, like a map for buried treasure.

Captain Billy:

I don’t know what you’re all talking about. I just want some rest is all.

Dr. Livesey:

Very well. We shall leave you in peace. But know this. Those two men are likely to come back. We can’t protect you if we don’t know what they want.

Jim:

But Captain Bones was already fast asleep.

Sally:

Or, at least, pretending to be.

Dr. Livesey:

I shall be off then.

Sally:

And I guess I’ll help Mom with the chores.

Jim:

I’ll just tidy up around here a moment. 19

Treasure Island

(Exit Dr. Livesey and Sally.) Captain Billy:

Jim? Psst. Jim?

Jim:

Captain Bones! I thought you were asleep!

Captain Billy:

Give us some rum!

Jim:

Captain Bones! NO! You heard what the doctor said.

Captain Billy:

That doctor’s not the boss of me. (he gets out of bed and tries to move around) I’ve got to get out of here. I’ve got to get on the run. Before Blue Dog and Black Dog come back!

Jim:

But Captain, you CAN’T run away! You nearly died a moment ago.

Captain Billy:

I know one way I could get strong enough.

Jim:

How?

Captain Billy:

If you give me a spot of rum.

Jim:

NO. Don’t you listen to anything the Doctor says? He said you would DIE if you have EVEN one more drop of rum.

Captain Billy:

I’ll die if I don’t. Blue Dog and Black Dog will come back. And without a drop of rum, I won’t have my sea legs to fight them, will I? 20

Treasure Island

Jim:

Well, no.

Captain Billy:

So I’ll be dead. With the rum or with-out the rum, I will be dead. You may as well give me a spot of rum, then.

Jim:

I don’t know... The Doctor...

Captain Billy:

Doctors is all swabs. And that doctor there, why, what do he know about sea-faring men? I been in places hot as pitch and mates dropping round with yellow fever--what do the doctor know of lands like that? And I lived on rum, I tell you. Rum has been meat and drink, man and wife, to me; and if I don’t have a drop of it now, I’ll have the horrors. (tosses him a coin) There are more silver coins where that came from.

Jim:

(looks at the coin) I want none of your money...just the money you owe us in rent. I’ll get you one glass and no more.

Captain Billy:

Now that’s a good first mate. (Jim pours Captain a drop. Captain drinks it.)

Captain Billy:

That’s better. (He loses balance.)

Jim:

You better sit down.

Captain Billy:

Just for a moment. 21

Treasure Island

Jim:

What are they after you for?

Captain Billy:

Another drop? (Jim pours.)

Captain Billy:

Blue dog and Black dog is lubbers. Lub-bers as couldn’t keep what they got---and want to nail what is another’s. I’ll give ‘em the slip. I’ll find an-other island. Another inn. And they won’t find me. Got to leave tonight. (He gets up, loses his balance, and sits down again.)

Jim:

Are you all right, sir?

Captain Billy:

The doctor’s done me in. My ears is singing. Lay me back.

Jim:

There, Captain. Just take it easy, now.

Captain Billy:

That Blue Dog. He’s a bad one. But there’s worse peeps that sent him. Now if I can’t get away, they’ll tip me the black spot. It’s my old sea chest they’re after. You get on a horse, you can, can’t you? Wel then you get on a horse and go to---to that doctor and tell him to pipe all hands--magistrates and such---on the Admiral Benbow.

Jim:

Why? Who’s coming to our inn?

Captain Billy:

Flint’s crew. 22

Treasure Island

Jim:

Who’s Flint?

Captain Billy:

He was my Captain. I was his first mate. He gave me this here sea chest when he was dying. And now they’re af-ter it.

Jim:

But what is the black spot, captain?

Captain Billy:

That’s a summons, mate. A sum-mons to come and murder me.

Jim:

And take the sea chest?

Captain Billy:

And take the sea chest.

23

Treasure Island

Scene 4 Setting:

Outside the inn

Sally:

The next day I was playing outside when I saw a blind man wandering by our inn.

Blind Man:

Will any kind friend inform a poor blind man, who has lost the precious sight of his eyes in the gracious de-fense of his native country, England, and God bless King George! where or in what part of this country he may now be?

Sally:

You are at the Admiral Benbow Inn in Black Hill Cove, sir.

Blind Man:

I hear a voice. A young voice. Will you give me your hand, my kind young friend, and lead me in?

Sally:

I held out my hand and the blind man gripped it like a vise. I was so star-tled that I struggled to withdraw

Blind Man:

but then I pulled out a knife and put it to her neck.

Sally:

Again!

Blind Man:

Now boy, take me to the captain.

Sally:

First of all, blind man, I am a GIRL. Second of all, there is NO way that I am taking you ANYWHERE. 24

Treasure Island

Blind Man:

Take me in or I’ll break your ARM.

Sally:

And he gave my arm a wrench that made me cry out.

Blind Man:

Now march. Lead me straight up to him.

Sally:

As soon as I did, the poor captain made a movement to rise---

Jim:

But he did not have enough strength.

Blind Man:

Now Bill, sit where you are. I may be blind, but I can hear a finger stir-ring. So don’t try any funny business. Hold out your left hand. Boy, take his left hand by the wrist and bring it near to my right.

Sally:

I keep telling you. I am NOT a boy.

Blind Man:

Do it! (Sally does it.)

Jim:

What happened next was REALLY strange. The blind man passed something to Captain Bones.

Blind Man:

And now that’s done.

25

Treasure Island

Sally:

And the Blind Man left. He just left. He walked out the door of our inn and he KEPT walking.

Captain Billy:

I’ve only got six hours! Hurry! I’ve got to get out of here. (Captain gets up, but then collapses.)

Jim:

Captain! Captain! Mom! Aunt Tilly! Sally!

Sally:

But there was nothing we could do.

Mrs. Hawkins:

The Captain was dead.

Aunt Tilly:

At last our inn was pirate-free.

Mrs. Hawkins:

Thank Goodness that’s over.

Jim:

Mom, it’s NOT over. We’ve got to get Dr. Livesey and quick!

Mrs. Hawkins:

What’s this? (She picks up a piece of paper with a black circle on it and a scribbled note. She hands it to Jim.)

Jim:

That’s the black spot. He had till ten o’clock to escape.

Mrs. Hawkins:

What would have happened at ten? 26

Treasure Island

Jim:

They would have killed him, Mum.

Sally:

What time is it now?

Aunt Tilly:

Six o clock. (The grandfather clock strikes six times. Startled by it, all four family members jump in fear.)

Mrs. Hawkins:

We’ve got to get his gold and then run. Now Jim, that key. Where is it?

Sally:

Check his pockets! (Jim shares his pockets. He shakes his head.)

Aunt Tilly:

Perhaps it’s around his neck. (Jim checks his neck.)

Jim:

I’ve found it!

Sally:

Quick! Open the chest! (Jim opens the chest.)

Mrs. Hawkins:

What’s in there?

Jim:

An old watch!

Sally:

What else? 27

Treasure Island

Jim:

Some tobacco!

Aunt Tilly:

That’s it?

Jim:

Some old sea shells

Mrs. Hawkins:

Look for silver, Jim. Silver!

Jim:

Two pistols!

Aunt Tilly:

Don’t touch them!

Sally:

Oh Jim, isn’t there any silver?

Jim:

(holds up silver coins) like this?

Aunt Tilly, Sally, and Mrs. Hawkins:

Yes!

Jim:

There are tons of silver coins. There must be more than a million dollars of them here.

Mrs. Hawkins:

We’ll only take what he owes us. And not a penny more. (They gather the coins.)

Jim:

Aunt Tilly:

There’s this old oilskin packet. I’ll take that just to remember him by. It’s getting late. We should take the money and run. 28

Treasure Island

( a noise) Mrs. Hawkins:

What’s that noise?

Sally:

There’s a group of men breaking down the front door.

Mrs. Hawkins:

We’ll go out the back. Hurry up!

Jim:

Let’s go!

Sally:

We ran into the forest. When we were in a safe spot we looked back at the house. We could see the blind man and Blue Dog and Black Dog breaking in to our house.

Blind Man:

Down with the door!

Black Dog and Blue Dog:

Aye, aye sir!

Black Dog:

Bill’s dead.

Blind Man:

Search him! And go get the chest!

Blue Dog:

That family that runs the inn? They got to the chest before us. Someone’s turned the chest out and over.

Blind Man:

Do ye mean to tell me that they STOLE from Bill? Of all the rotten.

(They knock down the store. They run in.)

29

Treasure Island

Blue Dog:

Well, we DID break into their house.

Black Dog:

Yeah, but WE’RE pirates. We’re supposed to do things like that. But they’re just a nice family, so ---

Blind Man:

Are you through chatting? Can we get on with the break in now?

Black Dog and Blue Dog:

Oh, uh, yeah, Boss.

Blind Man:

Look. In. The. Pirate. Chest.

Black Dog:

The money’s there.

Blind Man:

I don’t care about the money. Look for the MAP!!!

Blue Dog:

It’s not in the chest.

Blind Man:

Black Dog—is the map on Bill? Maybe he hid it on his body.

Black Dog:

That’s a negative. Over and out.

Blind Man:

It’s these people of the inn—it’s that boy. He took the map. That scoundrel.

Blue Dog:

That’s just wrong.

Black Dog:

It’s really bad manners. 30

Treasure Island

Blind Man:

I wish I’d put his eyes out!

Blue Dog:

They can’t have gone far. It looks like they were just here.

Blind Man:

Scatter, dogs! And find ‘em. Ye’ll be as rich as kings if ye find me the map.

Black Dog and Blue Dog:

We’ll find ‘em. Don’t you worry!

Jim:

(to his family) Quick! We’ve got to run to Dr Livesey.

(They run away.)

(The family run to Dr Livesey.) Aunt Tilly:

Ring the door bell! (Sally rings the door bell. A servant opens the door.)

Servant:

Can I help you?

Jim:

(out of breath) We’re here for Dr Livesey.

Servant:

Dr. Livesey isn’t in.

Aunt Tilly and Mrs. Hawkins:

He isn’t in?

Servant:

He’s having dinner at Squire Trelawney. 31

Treasure Island

Sally:

Who’s that?

Aunt Tilly:

Who’s that? It’s only the finest nobleman in three counties.

Mrs. Hawkins:

Well, we’ll just have to run over to Squire Trelawney’s house.

Jim:

Let’s go! (They run to Squire Trelawney’s house.)

Aunt Tilly:

Ring the door bell. (Sally rings the door bell. Dr Livesey opens the door.)

Dr. Livesey:

Jim! Mrs Hawkins! Sally! Tilly! What is the matter!

Jim:

Bill’s dead!

Aunt Tilly:

Good riddance!

Mrs. Hawkins:

We’re seeking shelter, Doctor!

Aunt Tilly:

The pirates are after us, Doctor!

Dr. Livesey:

Oh, dear. Come in, come in. Please allow me to introduce my dear friend, Squire Trelawney.

32

Treasure Island

Squire Trelawney:

Delighted to make your acquaintance. But you seem in distress.

Aunt Tilly:

Oh! If only we’d followed the pirate preparedness plan! None of this would have happened.

Mrs. Hawkins:

Our lives are in danger! The pirates are looking for us!

Dr. Livesey:

But why would the pirates be after you, dear lady?

Sally:

They think we’ve got something of theirs. Something important.

Jim:

(takes out the map and shows it to Dr. Livesey) And I think so, too.

Mrs. Hawkins:

What is it, Doctor?

Squire Trelawney:

May I? (He inspects the map closely.)

Aunt Tilly:

I see. Yes, I see.

Squire Trelawney:

You see WHAT?

Mrs. Hawkins:

It is Captain Flint’s old map and log. Who’s Captain Flint?

33

Treasure Island

Dr. Livesey:

Only the most dangerous pirate who ever lived.

Squire Trelawney:

He makes Blackbeard look like an angel.

Dr. Livesey:

Flint collected a huge fortune. He’s hidden it somewhere.

Jim:

Does the map tell us where?

Squire Trelawney:

Only one way to find out.

Dr. Livesey:

We shall sail at once to the Caribbean.

Jim, Sally, Aunt Tilly, and Mrs. Hawkins:

What?

Squire Trelawney:

I am tired of the foggy English weather, anyway. I could use a spot of adventure.

Jim:

How does that help us, sir? We’re in danger.

Dr. Livesey:

You’ll come along, of course.

Squire Trelawney:

Of course. After all, you found the map. Most of the treasure belongs to you. I’m just coming along for the fun of it.

Aunt Tilly:

Fun? Looking for buried treasure? Living like pirates? Count me out.

Mrs. Hawkins:

I’m not going either. 34

Treasure Island

Dr. Livesey:

Then you shall stay here, Madams.

Aunt Tilly:

And who will protect us?

Squire Trelawney:

You are welcome to stay in my wellprotected castle here. You will be safe. Sally and Jim shall come along with us.

Dr. Livesey:

Now what I am about to say is very important. We shall not breathe a word about the map or the buried treasure to anyone at all.

Squire Trelawney:

Our lives depend upon it.

All:

Agreed.

Mrs. Hawkins:

The very next day, the Squire went into Bristol to find a ship for the journey.

Squire Trelawney:

I have found an excellent ship. She is called the Hispaniola.

Dr. Livesey:

How did you find one so fast?

Squire Trelawney:

Well, funnily enough, this one-legged man was very helpful. He insisted on finding a ship for me. AND he said that he would find me a crew and would even go on the journey with us.

Dr. Livesey:

How very kind! 35

Treasure Island

Jim:

A one-legged man? Why does that sound so familiar?

Squire Trelawney:

Ah, here he is. Captain Long John Silver.

Long John Silver:

Pleased to make your acquaintance.

Dr. Livesey:

The pleasure is mine. I understand you will be joining us.

Long John Silver:

I wouldn’t miss it for the world. I love the sea. I’ve been pining for a sea journey for years.

Dr. Livesey:

It can’t be easy to crew a ship with just one leg.

Long John Silver:

And that’s why I’ll be the cook on board.

Dr. Livesey:

Very well, very well. And who is the captain of this ship?

Smollett:

That would be me. Now, before we all leave for the open seas, I must express my concern about this crew. They are all drunkards. They are completely unsuitable as crew. I urge you, Squire, to replace them.

Squire Trelawney:

Nonsense. Even though I have only known him for five minutes, I trust Long John Silver. These are the men he has recommended. And they are good enough for me.

36

Treasure Island

Smollett:

Well they are NOT good enough for me. But since it is your ship and it is your money, I suppose you may have your way.

Sally:

And so we headed off for the high seas.

Jim:

One night when we were out at sea, we got hungry.

Sally:

So we went to the kitchen for an apple.

Jim:

And we overheard a conversation

Sally:

Between Captain Long John Silver and the crew.

Long John Silver:

Now, men, we’ve pulled the wool over the Squire’s eyes.

Crew 1:

Yeah, he has no idea that we’re all pirates.

Crew 2:

And he DEFINITELY has no idea that we’re on board so that WE can STEAL Flint’s treasure.

Crew 1:

And take over his ship

Crew 2:

AND throw him and those annoying kids over board.

Long John Silver:

And we’re going to keep it our little secret, aren’t we? More rum? 37

Treasure Island

Crew 1 and Crew 2:

Ay!

Smollett:

(aside) Land ahoy!

Sally:

We ran to gather Doctor Livesey and Smollett and Trelawney.

Jim:

We told them what we’d heard.

Smollett:

Now---do you understand WHY I said they were totally unsuitable?

Squire Trelawney:

I’ve been a fool! I’ve been a fool!

Dr. Livesey:

At least----thanks to Jim and Sally---we know the truth. BEFORE it’s too late.

Smollett:

I am the Captain on this ship---and for the rest of expedition. I am ordering all of us to keep an eye on those pirates---but we must never let on that we are on to them.

All:

Agreed.

Smollett:

Now Jim and Sally, gather the crew. I want to address them.

38

Treasure Island

Jim and Sally:

(Jim and Sally do so. The crew gathers around.) Congratulations, men! We have arrived at our destination. It has been a long trip and you are due a break. Long John, why don’t you and your men take a day off? You may row to shore and frolic in the sun while the rest of us take care of things on the boat.

Long John Silver:

Aye aye sir! (aside to his men) This worked out better than I had even planned! While they’re still on the boat, we can go dig up Flint’s treasure.

Squire Trelawney:

(aside to Smollett) Why the devil are you letting the pirates off the boat?

Dr. Livesey:

They will find the treasure before we do!

Smollett:

(aside) Number one, they won’t find the treasure. They don’t have the map. Number two, it will give us time to arm ourselves for when they return.

Squire Trelawney:

Good thinking.

Dr. Livesey:

Excellent point.

Jim:

Yes, it was good thinking.

Sally:

And an excellent point

Jim:

But just in case the grown ups were wrong 39

Treasure Island

Sally:

We sneaked onto a pirate boat

Jim:

And went with them ashore.

Sally:

We wanted to, you know,

Jim:

Keep an eye on them.

Sally:

Unfortunately Captain Long John Silver seemed to spot us on the boats.

Jim:

So when we arrived on shore

Sally:

We scrambled behind a bush and listened in on their conversations. (They hide.)

Long John Silver:

(to Tom) Tom, I’d like a word with you.

Tom:

Captain, I’ve already told you. I’m an honest sailor. I will not join your mutiny. And neither will my friend Alan. Wait, where is Alan?

Alan:

(bloodcurdling scream)

Tom:

What’s happening?

Long John Silver:

That’s Alan. Or should I say that WAS Alan. Losing his life. See---it’s our way---or (he takes out a knife) no way. 40

Treasure Island

Tom:

From this time forward, Long John Silver--you are no friend of mine.

Long John Silver:

Then it won’t hurt your feelings if I do this. (He stabs Tom.)

Tom:

(screams and dies.)

Jim:

What are we going to do?

Sally:

Long John knows we’re here. He SAW us. (A man creeps up behind Jim and Sally. He covers their mouths with their hands. They both jump up in shock.)

Ben:

Now don’t be scared. I mean ye no harm.

Sally:

Who are you?

Jim:

You’re not a member of our crew.

Ben:

Indeed I’m not. I’ve been stuck on this island for three whole years. I was a member of Flint’s crew, ye see. Flint killed all the members of his crew. I was the only one that got away. I can show you where the treasure is and welcome.

Sally:

Lead the way.

41

Treasure Island

Squire Trelawney:

Meanwhile , back on the boat, we of course had deduced that the children had gone on the boats.

Dr. Livesey:

Blast!

Smollett:

The only honorable thing to do is to go after them

Squire Trelawney:

So that is just what we did.

Dr. Livesey:

As we approached land, a cannon ball from our own ship was hurled at us.

Squire Trelawney:

Apparently another mutineer was on board.

Smollett:

And then the pirates began to shoot at us.

Squire Trelawney:

Things got so bad that

Dr. Livesey:

We had to leave all our provisions on the boat.

Squire Trelawney:

But fortunately we reached land safely. We found a place to hide.

Dr. Livesey:

Poor Jim and Sally! What has become of them, I wonder!

Jim and Sally:

(walking in to their camp) Hello!

Squire Trelawney:

Jim! 42

Treasure Island

Dr. Livesey:

Sally!

Smollett:

We’d given you up for lost!

Squire Trelawney:

There’s no time to chat. Long John Silver is approaching.

Long John Silver:

That’s Captain Long John Silver, to you.

Smollett:

You have no right to call yourself captain.

Dr. Livesey:

And how DARE you enter our camp when your men are hurling cannons at us?

Long John Silver:

You don’t like the cannons, huh?

Dr. Livesey:

No, as a matter of fact, we do NOT like the cannons that are being hurled at us.

Long John Silver:

There is an easy way to make them stop.

Dr. Livesey:

Oh? And what, pray tell, is that?

Long John Silver:

Give up the treasure map.

Squire Trelawney:

Never! Oh—I mean---what treasure map?

Long John Silver:

You know EXACTLY what treasure map I mean. I’m talking about Flint's treasure map.

Smollett:

We don’t have any treasure map, you fool! 43

Treasure Island

Long John Silver:

Now think real careful-like, see. Because you’re in a bit of a pickle if you don’t mind me saying so. See----we’ve got your ship. And without your ship, you’ve got no way of getting home. And without any way of getting home, you’re going to be stranded here. Without any food or other provisions. And little by little, you’re going to become stark-raving mad…just like him. (points to Ben)

Ben:

Hey! Thanks a lot!

Long John Silver:

I’m just saying.

Smollett:

Thank you for your touching concern for our well-being.

All:

Now, GET OUT.

Long John Silver:

Whatever.

Smollett:

Men—and Sally and Jim---brace yourselves. They’re going to attack us even harder now that we’ve turned down their quid pro quo. Arm yourselves. Even you two, Jim and Sally. (A big shooting fight between the pirates and the good guys. Lots of pirates die.)

44

Treasure Island

Dr. Livesey:

I am not just going to sit around and wait to be attacked. Jim, you mentioned you met a man who had been on Flint’s crew.

Jim:

Yes, his name is Ben. And he lives in a cave on the other side of the island.

Sally:

He kind of looks like a crazy person.

Jim:

That’s just because he’s been a castaway for three years.

Dr. Livesey:

If Ben was on Flint’s crew, then he can help us find the treasure. I ‘m going to his cave and I’m bringing this with me. (He holds up the map.) (Doctor Livesey walks off stage.)

Jim:

(to Sally) Well, what will we do?

Sally:

I don’t know. I don’t want to sit around and wait for the next round of cannon fire.

Jim:

Ben said there was a boat on the shore. A little boat.

Sally:

We could take it…but where would we go?

Jim:

Some of the pirates are still on the Hispaniola. What do you say we cut them loose? 45

Treasure Island

Sally:

You mean cut the rope that ties them to their anchor?

Jim:

That’s right. Before they know it, they will have drifted far out to sea.

Sally:

Great idea. Let’s do it.

Jim:

So we found the boat and got in.

Sally:

We sailed to the Hispaniola.

Jim:

I’ll just cut the rope that ties the boat to the anchor.

Sally:

Careful, Jim!

Jim:

(cuts the rope) I’ve done it.

Sally:

Let go of the rope, Jim!

Jim:

(climbing up the rope) Hang on, I just want to see what they’re doing on board.

Sally:

(climbing up the rope, too) I’ll come, too.

Jim:

No don’t. The little boat will…float away.

Sally:

Uh-oh.

Jim:

(climbing onboard the Hispaniola) Now, we’ll have to stay on the ship. Good one, sis! 46

Treasure Island

Sally:

Well, if you hadn’t climbed up!

Jim:

Shh! Let’s see who’s on board.

Sally:

Look!

Jim:

It’s Israel Hands!

Sally:

Is he dead?

Jim:

He’s lying in a pool of blood. He sure looks like he is!

Sally:

Mr. Hands? Mr Hands?

Israel Hands:

A spot of rum! A spot of rum!

Jim:

Mr Hands? Is there anyone else on board?

Israel Hands:

No, just me.

Jim:

I am now the captain of this ship. I shall require your assistance. Do you accept me as your captain?

Israel Hands:

If you give me food and drink and help me with my wounds, I’ll help you sail the ship.

Sally:

I’ll get the bandages.

Jim:

We’ll set sail for the northern end of the island. 47

Treasure Island

Israel Hands:

(getting up) Aye, aye, Captain. I can’t believe I am working for a12 year old.

Sally:

We sailed to the northern end of the camp. We spotted the pirate’s camp on shore.

Jim:

I’m going down to investigate.

Sally:

We’re both going to investigate.

Long John Silver:

Pirate 1:

(Long John Silver is surrounded by six pirates.) Now I hope you’ll all start treating me with respect. I mean I’ve killed most of you. And if any of you disrespect me, you’ll be next. Yeah, right. Whatever. (Jim and Sally creep in, but are instantly spotted by Long John Silver.)

Long John Silver:

Well, now, what do we have here? It’s Sally and Jim come to pay us a visit. Well isn’t that special? You know, I like you two. You remind me of me when I was a lad.

Sally:

We’re NOTHING like you.

Long John Silver:

You’re exactly like me. You’re clever, adventurous…and greedy.

Jim:

We’re not greedy. 48

Treasure Island

Long John Silver:

Of course not. You don’t care at all about buried treasure.

Sally:

We’re going back to our camp---

Long John Silver:

I wouldn’t bother. Dr Livesey was just here. He told us that you two had deserted them. He said he doesn’t care if he ever sees either of you again.

Jim:

I don’t believe you.

Sally:

Neither do I.

Long John Silver:

I’ve been at sea all me life---and look at what little respect I get. My men are disrespectful.

Pirates:

Arg!!!

Long John Silver:

And now you two pipsqueaks are giving me attitude!

Pirate 2:

Boss, are you going to feed us or what?

Pirate 3:

Yeah, what kind of leader are you?

Pirate 4:

We’d be better off with another leader.

Long John Silver:

See what I mean? No respect! I’ll have to kill another one of you soon just to show you who’s boss.

49

Treasure Island

Pirate 5:

You know, maybe we’re a little tired of your threats.

Pirates:

Yeah!

Pirate 6:

And we’re a little tired of you killing our pals.

Pirates:

Yeah!

Pirate 5:

Guys---let’s huddle in a corner and plan our next move.

Long John Silver:

Oh great! They’re planning to mutiny. But this time they’re going to mutiny not WITH me but AGAINST me.

Jim:

Well, we’ll be seeing you, Captain.

Long John Silver:

Not so fast, you two. Do you think I’m going to let you two just walk out of here? Do you forget that I am holding a gun in my hand?

Sally:

What do you want from us?

Long John Silver:

I want help.

Jim and Sally:

What?

Long John Silver:

I want help. Ok? I admit it. I need help! I can’t fend off those pirates on my own. There are six of them and just one of me.

Sally:

But we’re just kids. 50

Treasure Island

Jim:

Yeah---to ask us to help you fight them--that’s just wrong.

Long John Silver:

Do you two think that those pirates over there---knowing that you have the map of buried treasure---are just going to let you go free and easy? Dream on.

Sally:

He’s right.

Long John Silver:

Pretend that you’re my hostages. It will convince the pirates that I still have things under control. (Long John Silver starts to tie them up.)

Sally:

I don’t know about this.

Jim:

I mean---if you tie us up, it’s not like we’re just ACTING like your hostages. It’s kind of like-

Sally:

We ARE your hostages!

Long John Silver:

Aha! (he gets the attention of the pirates) And now I’ve got ye two as hostages. Plus I’ve got the treasure map.

Jim:

There’s no way you have the treasure map!

Sally:

Dr. Livesey has that.

Long John Silver:

Maybe the good Doctor gave the map to me.

Jim:

He would never do that. 51

Treasure Island

Long John Silver:

Wouldn’t he just? If his life depended upon it?

Sally:

You killed him? You killed Dr Livesey?

Long John Silver:

All is fair in theft and piracy.

Pirates:

Look, things have gotten out of control. We’re going to call a pirates’ council.

Jim:

What’s that?

Long John Silver:

It’s when the pirates vote on whether to slip someone the black spot.

Sally:

So they had the pirates’ council.

Jim:

And at the end of it, they slipped the black spot to Long John Silver.

Pirate 3:

This is the pirate way of saying

Pirates:

(to Long John Silver) You’re fired! You did a

Pirate 2:

horrible job as our leader.

Long John Silver:

Now you hear me

Pirates:

We don’t have to hear you anymore! You’re fired!

Long John Silver:

If you’d just listened to me---we’d have FOUND our treasure already. 52

Treasure Island

Pirate 2:

Well you’re fired---and we’ll carry on without you from hereon out.

Long John Silver:

Good luck finding the treasure!

Pirates:

Thanks!

Long John Silver:

(holding up the map) without THE MAP!

Pirate 1:

Now maybe we want to rethink this.

Pirate 2:

He really wasn’t such a bad boss after all.

Pirate 3:

Did we say he was a bad boss?

Pirate 4:

I don’t remember saying that he was a bad boss.

Pirate 5:

Tell you what. Share the map with us. And you can be boss again.

Pirates:

Please!

Long John Silver:

Well, I don’t know….

Pirates:

Come on!!!!

Long John Silver:

You hurt my feelings…

Pirates:

We’re sorry…

Long John Silver:

I felt very much alone.

53

Treasure Island

Pirates:

We love you, boss! GROUP HUG! (They group hug. After a moment, Long John Silver pushes them aside when he sees Dr. Livesey.)

Dr. Livesey:

Sorry to interrupt this touching moment.

Sally and Jim:

Dr Livesey!

Dr. Livesey:

Sally and Jim! May I have a word?

Long John Silver:

You may talk to them, Dr Livesey.

Dr. Livesey:

Children, I am disappointed in you. You abandoned our camp in the midst of a battle. You abandoned your captain. And now‌ it appears that you have joined the Pirate camp?

Pirates:

Arg!!!

Dr. Livesey:

(whispering) Listen children---I know you’re a little tied up at the moment---but I think if we make a run for it, we can get away.

Jim:

No, I am not running away. Doctor, we know where the Hispaniola is.

Sally:

When the time is right, we can all sail back to England.

54

Treasure Island

Dr. Livesey:

That’s wonderful news, children. I shall return to camp. Until we meet again. (Exit Dr. Livesey.)

Long John Silver:

Come on, men. No time to lose. Let’s go on search for treasure.

Pirates:

Treasure!

Sally:

We walked and walked until we saw

Pirates:

A skeleton!

Pirate 3:

And it’s pointing to the treasure?

Pirate 4:

It looks like someone has been here before.

Pirate 1:

Hang on a minute. Is it just me or----

Pirate 2:

Does the skeleton look a lot like our old friend—

Pirate 1:

Allardyce!

Pirate 2:

He was on Captain Flint’s crew.

Long John Silver:

Ay…it’s a good thing old Captain Flint is dead. That Captain knew only one way of staying in control of his men and that was to kill them all.

55

Treasure Island

(A voice can be heard singing) Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest Pirates:

(jumping up in fear) It’s the ghost of Flint! It’s the ghost of Flint!

Pirate 4:

Let’s get out of here!

Long John Silver:

Cowards! This is what separates the grown ups from mere children. I don’t believe in ghosts. But I do believe in treasure. Now let’s find it! (The pirates creep slowly and cautiously forward as if they are thoroughly scared and spooked.)

Jim:

I see the treasure chest. It’s straight ahead. (They all run forward to it.)

Sally:

Someone’s been here before us!

Jim:

They’ve taken all the treasure. (The pirates dig in the hole.)

Pirate 4:

There are just a few coins left. That’s all!

Pirate 5:

You brought us all the way here for nothing.

Pirate 6:

Yeah! What kind of boss are you?

Long John Silver:

How could I have known? 56

Treasure Island

Pirate 1:

We have just one thing to say to you.

Long John Silver:

What’s that?

Pirates:

You’re fired!

Long John Silver:

Now men, gentlemen, friends.. (The pirates draw their pistols on Long John Silver who hands swords to Sally and Jim. A gun fight ensues. Long John Silver shoots Pirate 4. )

Long John Silver:

That’s what happens to people who complain too much!

Jim:

There are too many pirates and too few of us. How will we ever win this battle?

Dr. Livesey:

(suddenly appearing on stage) Perhaps I can be of service?

Ben:

And I?

Alan:

And I? (Then men shoot until all the pirates have fallen.)

Long John Silver:

I suppose I owe you a note of thanks.

57

Treasure Island

Dr. Livesey:

I feel somehow responsible for this last gun fight. You see, I knew that the map was useless.

Long John Silver:

How?

Dr. Livesey:

I met with Ben Gunn here shortly after we came ashore. He had told me that he had moved the treasure to a secret location. So when I gave you the map…

Long John Silver:

You knew it was of no value.

Sally:

So where is the treasure really?

Ben:

Allow me to show you.

Jim:

He took us to a cave

Sally:

And there it was.

Long John Silver:

Treasure!

Smollett:

There is more gold here than I have ever seen in my life.

Jim:

We did it!

Sally:

We found the buried treasure!

Jim

We’re rich!

Smollett:

Gentlemen, and Sally, let’s set sail for home! 58

Treasure Island

Sally:

And that’s just what we did.

Jim:

On the trip back to England, Long John Silver crept overboard with a few bags of treasure and sailed away on a little boat. He’s never been seen or heard from since.

Sally and Jim:

The END!
