Setting:
This play takes place in a castle, long, long ago.

2
Scene 1:
A Much Longed For Baby
Narrator 1:
Once upon a time, there was a King and a Queen. They were very happy.
Narrator 2:
There was only one thing that was missing in their lives.
King and Queen:
A child!
Narrator 3:
Then, at last, after several years of waiting and hoping….
Narrator 1:
the queen gave birth to a healthy baby daughter.
King and Queen:
Our princess!
Narrator 2:
Now their happiness was complete!
Narrator 3:
The queen and king were very busy with their new daughter.
King:
I have to change her diaper!
Queen:
I have to make her bottle!
King:
I have to give her her bottle!
Queen:
I have to rock her to sleep!
King:
I have to wash her clothes!
Queen:
I have to tidy her bedroom!
King:
We have to give her a bath!
Queen:
We have to dress her for bed!
King:
We have to put her to bed!
Queen:
At last ! She’s asleep! I’m exhausted!
King:
Me too! Let’s grab a nap!
Queen:
We can’t! We have to organize her baptism.
King:
You’re right. Let’s do it now before we forget.
Queen (yawning):
Ok. You get the invitations and I’ll get the pen and stamps.
Narrator 1:
The King and Queen sat down and organized the invitations to their daughter’s baptism.
King:
We’re inviting all seven of the Queen’s best friends to be the princess’ godmothers.
Narrator 2:
Each of the Queen’s best friends were fairies and would each give the princess a special gift or power.
Queen:
Our lucky daughter! I can’t wait!
King (yawning):
Well, we’ve done all the invitations. We can mail them tomorrow.
Queen (yawning):
We are missing one stamp for Anastasia’s invitation, but we can deal with that tomorrow.
King (sleepy):
Sounds good. Right now, it’s time for sleep!
Queen (falling asleep):
So true!
Narrator 3:
But as often happens to many new parents….
Narrator 1:
just as they began to fall asleep
Narrator 2:
they heard…
Princess:
Waaa! Waaa!
3
Scene 2: Narrator 3:
The next day, the postman came to the palace.
Narrator 1:
He rang on the door bell. Ding dong.
Narrator 2:
But nobody answered the door.
Postman:
That’s odd. The King and Queen always have mail to send out. I’ll ring the door again.
Narrator 3:
Ding Dong!
Narrator 1:
Slowly, slowly the exhausted King made his way to the front door.
King:
Good morning, Mr. Postman!
Postman:
Good morning, your majesty! If you don’t mind my saying so, you look exhausted.
King:
Postman:
4
The Postman Always Rings Twice
It’s the new baby. She is cute, but she is running us ragged! I’ve never been so exhausted in my entire life! Don’t you have servants to help?
King:
We do, but we are determined to be handson parents. We want to do it all ourselves because we love (yawn) our daughter (yawn) so much!
Postman:
I see. Well, that is very noble of you. Do you have any mail for me today?
King:
Yes, yes, I do. One moment!
Narrator 2:
The King went into the palace and grabbed the seven invitations to the princess’ baptism.
King:
I have these invitations to send out to my daughter’s baptism.
Postman:
Wonderful! I will see that they are all delivered!
King:
Excellent! Have a lovely day!
Postman:
You too! And get some sleep!
Narrator 3:
But before the King could close the door, the postman could hear...
Princess:
Waa! Waa! Waa! Waa!
King:
She’s awake! Pray for me, Mr Postman!
Narrator 1:
The postman smiled and walked away. A father himself, he had been through it all many times.
Narrator 2:
He was so busy thinking about how wonderful it was for the King and Queen to have a baby that he forgot to check the postage on each of the invitations.
Narrator 3:
If Mr. Postman had checked, he would have seen that the last invitation,
Narrator 1:
the invitation to the fairy named Anastasia,
Narrator 2:
had no stamp at all!
Scene 3:
No stamp, big problem
Narrator 3:
The postman delivered the letters to the post office. Then he went home for the day.
Narrator 1:
Meanwhile, the director of the post office was sorting the mail to be delivered. His assistant was helping him.
Director of Post Office:
Here is a bunch of letters to some ladies: one for the Fairy named Elsa. That has appropriate postage. Deliver that today. 5
Assistant:
Yes, boss!
Director of Post Office:
One for the Fairy Primrose. That has appropriate postage. Deliver that today.
Assistant:
Yes, boss!
Director of Post Office:
One for the Fairy Isabella. That has appropriate postage. Deliver that today.
Assistant:
Yes, boss!
Director of Post Office:
One for the Fairy Phoebe. That has appropriate postage. Deliver that today.
Assistant:
Yes, boss!
Director of Post Office:
One for the Fairy Karis. That has appropriate postage. Deliver that today.
Assistant:
6
Yes, boss!
Director of Post Office:
One for the Fairy Angelique. That has appropriate postage. Deliver that today.
Assistant:
Yes, boss!
Director of Post Office:
One for the fairy Anastasia. This does NOT have appropriate postage. Do not deliver that one AT ALL.
Assistant:
You meanAnastasia will never get her letter? Isn’t that kind of harsh?
Director of Post Office:
I’ll tell you what is kind of harsh: sending us a letter without appropriate postage...and then expecting US to do all the work of delivering it. Do you want to work for free?
Assistant:
Not really.
Director of Post Office:
Well, neither do I. But that’s exactly what we’d be doing if we delivered this letter without appropriate postage.
Assistant:
Can we return it to the sender? That way they would know that they made a mistake and can fix it?
Director of Post Office:
Not my problem. This little letter without any stamp is going into the shredder….never to be heard or seen from ever again.
Assistant:
Wow.
Director of Post Office:
What are you standing around, for? Last I heard you had 6 letters to deliver. Since they’re appropriately stamped, you’ve got to deliver them...TODAY.
Assistant:
On my way, sir.
Narrator 2:
And that is how the fairy Anastasia never received her invitation to the princess’ baptism.
Narrator 3:
The King and Queen were so tired and so busy caring for their baby daughter that they never even realized their mistake.
Scene 4:
Where is Anastasia’s Invitation?
Narrator 1:
A week or so later, the fairies were all relaxing at a swimming pool.
Elsa:
Such a beautiful day! Don’t you love the summer, Primrose?
Primrose:
I do indeed, Elsa. How I love the warm sun! What say you, Isabella!
Isabella:
I love the refreshing pool! What about you, Anastasia?
7
Anastasia
Oh I do so love the days of summer! There is nothing at all to do but relax and unwind. Isn’t that right, Phoebe?
Phoebe:
How true! One can wear light summer dresses and go about barefoot! Do you agree, Karis?
Karis:
Oh yes, and let your hair down instead of arranging it perfectly! You look very happy and relaxed, Anastasia.
Anastasia:
Yes, Karisit is so lovely to relax all summer long and never have to get dressed up. Don’t you agree, Angelique?
Angelique:
I do, but it isn’t as if we never have to get dressed up this summer. We will all have to get dressed up for next week’s party.
Anastasia:
What party?
Elsa:
Oh, Anastasia! Surely you have not forgotten the baptism of the princess next Thursday?
Narrator 2 :
Anastasia’s jaw nearly dropped. She had never ever received an invitation.
Director of Postal Services: Because of inadequate postage! Narrator 3:
But Anastasia did not know that.
Narrator 1:
She believed that the King and Queen had left her out on purpose.
Anastasia:
Are you all going to the princess’ baptism?
Phoebe:
Of course we are! We are going to be the princess’ godmothers!
(Anastasia gulps.) Elsa: 8
Don’t tell us you were not invited!
Primrose:
Surely, you were asked to be a godmother to the princess , as well!
Narrator 2:
A deep rage began to gurgle beneath Anastasia’s calm surface.
Narrator 3:
She was not about to admit that she had been left out.
Narrator 1:
So she replied:
Anastasia:
Of course I’m going to the party. Naturally, the King and Queen have asked me to be one of the godmothers.
Karis:
Thank goodness. That was beginning to feel awkward.
Anastasia:
What time is the baptism again?
Primrose:
It’s at 2pm next Thursday. What are you going to give her, Anastasia?
Anastasia:
I haven’t decided.
Elsa;
Well, just so you know I am giving her goodness. What are you giving her, Primrose?
Primrose:
I am giving her beauty. What are you giving her, Isabella?
Isabella:
I am giving her a beautiful voice so that she can sing like an angel. What are you giving her, Phoebe?
Phoebe:
I am giving her grace. What are you giving her, Karis?
Karis:
I am giving her great dancing skills. What are you giving her, Angelique?
Angelique:
I am giving her cleverness. What are you giving her, Anastasia? 9
10
Anastasia:
I don’t know. I haven’t yet decided.
Elsa:
Well, make up your mind soon! After all, we received the invitations over a week ago.
Primrose:
You’ve had plenty of time to make up your mind.
Isabella:
You did get your invitation, didn’t you?
Narrator 2:
Hot tears of hurt and anger pricked the corner of Anastasia’s eyes.
Anastasia:
Oh, yes, I received my invitation. And I will be planning something special...something very special, indeed.
Scene 5:
A Very Bad Present
Narrator 3:
The next week passed. At last, it was the day of the princess’ baptism.
Queen:
So exciting!
Narrator 1:
The King and Queen sat on their thrones.
Narrator 2:
The Queen held the princess in her arms.
Queen:
My precious girl!
Narrator 3:
The fairy godmothers lined up to give their gifts to their baby goddaughter.
Narrator 1:
The first was the Fairy Elsa.
Elsa:
I give the baby goodness: a true, kind heart.
Narrator 2:
Next came the Fairy Primrose.
Primrose:
I give the baby beauty. May she be beautiful inside and out.
Narrator 3:
Then came the Fairy Isabella.
Isabella:
I give the baby a sweet singing voice. May she sing like a bird!
Narrator 1:
Next came the Fairy Phoebe.
Phoebe:
I give the baby grace. May she be the most graceful creature ever.
Narrator 2:
Next came the Fairy Karis.
Karis:
I give the baby the gift of dancing. May she be the best dancer in the world!
Narrator 3:
And then came the Fairy Anastasia.
King and Queen:
Hello, Anastasia.
Anastasia:
I suppose you’re surprised to see me here.
King and Queen:
No, not really. 11
12
Anastasia (aside):
They’re so fake! They’re going to actually PRETEND that they invited me! Well, I know the truth! I know that they really hate my guts!
King and Queen:
What is your gift for the Princess?
Anastasia:
When she is 18….
King and Queen:
yes?
Anastasia:
she shall find a spindle…
King and Queen:
yes? how exciting!
Anastasia:
and she shall prick her finger on the spindle point...
King and Queen:
that doesn’t sound very good.
Anastasia:
and DROP DEAD.
King and Queen:
That sounds worse!
King:
Anastasia, what on earth are you saying?
Queen:
That is a terrible gift!
Elsa:
Anastasia, why would you say such a thing?
Primrose:
What sort of gift is that?
Anastasia:
It’s just what they deserve!
Isabella:
Anastasia, what are you talking about?
Anastasia:
They didn’t even invite me to this baptism.
King and Queen:
What? Yes we did!
Anastasia:
You are liars! Liars! You intentionally left me out!
Queen:
Anastasia, of course, we invited you! We invited all seven of the fairies.
Anastasia:
Then how come everyone else got their invitation EXCEPT ME?
King:
Somehow, it must have gotten lost in the mail.
Anastasia:
AS IF! Nothing ever gets lost in the mail.
Director of Post Office:
If I may interject, I have to agree with Anastasia. With appropriate postage, nothing ever gets lost in the mail. We have an excellent record of reliability.
Queen:
It’s coming back to me now. The night we made the invitations…. we were so sleepy...
King:
we didn’t have enough stamps..
Queen:
We said we’d get an extra stamp the next morning
King:
And then I just clean forgot. I ended up giving all the invitations to the postman.
Queen:
It must have been your invitation that was missing a stamp, Anastasia.
King:
I can’t believe they wouldn’t just send it anyway.
Director Of Post Office:
If I may interject, here, first of all, thanks for inviting me to this great party. What an honor! Second of all, speaking as a postal services employee, I have to tell you that it is our policy to destroy all mail that does not have appropriate postage.
King:
So if we sent an invitation to Anastasia without appropriate postage… 13
14
Director of Post Office:
it would be destroyed, yes. Thanks again for the party!
Anastasia:
Even HE got an invitation! But mine? Nowhere to be found.
Queen:
Oh Anastasia! We are so sorrybut did you really have to kill our child over this?
Anastasia:
Well...perhaps I overreacted, but what’s done is done. She’ll be fine until she’s 18. And then, she’ll, you know, die.
King:
Undo this terrible spell! Please, Anastasia!
Anastasia:
No can do. It doesn’t work that way.
Queen:
Elsa! Primrose! Help us!
Elsa:
I’m afraid she is right, your majesty. She cannot undo her spell.
Queen:
undo her spell? But can’t one of you
Primrose:
We’ve already used up our spell.
Isabella:
We can’t use another.
Phoebe:
If one of us hadn’t yet cast our spell...we might be able to help, but…
Scene 6:
Angelique to the Rescue!
Narrator 2:
Just then, Angelique arrived.
Angelique:
Sorry I’m late! I had trouble finding a taxi. Can I give the princess my gift?
ALL:
STOP!
Queen:
Angelique! You are my daughter’s only hope!
Karis:
Something terrible has happened!
Angelique:
What?
Phoebe:
Anastasia was angry.
Karis:
She thought she was not invited to this party.
Isabella:
But it was just that she never got the invitation
King:
Even though we TOTALLY sent it
Director of Post Office:
With inappropriate postage so we had to destroy the letter.
Anastasia:
So I never got the invitation.
Angelique:
That’s messed up.
Anastasia:
I know! I got really REALLY angry.
Elsa:
She came to the baptism
Primrose:
and when it was her turn to bless the baby
Isabella:
She cast a spell that when the baby turns 18
Phoebe:
she’ll find a spindle
Karis:
and she’ll prick her finger on it
Anastasia:
and she’ll drop dead. What? I was angry!
Queen:
You must undo the curse, Angelique!
Narrator 3:
Angelique shook her head sadly.
Angelique:
Nobody can completely undo another fairy’s spell. The best I can do is alter it. 15
Narrator 1:
So Angelique raised her wand over the baby princess.
Angelique:
Dear girl, when you turn 18, you shall find a spinning wheel and prick your finger on it, and you ...and your entire kingdom shall fall into a deep slumber that shall last for a hundred years...until a prince finds you and kisses you on the lips. Then you and your entire kingdom shall awake and carry on as normal.
King:
Okay….okay...I guess that makes it a bit better.
Queen:
Thank you, Angelique! Anastasia, get out of this place!
Anastasia:
Can’t I stay for some cake?
King and Queen:
No! Get out!
Anastasia (leaving):
I said I’m sorry!
Queen:
In fact, everyoneget out! This party is OVER.
Director of Post Office:
Do you mind if I help myself to some extra snacks and cake for the folks back at the post office?
Queen:
Leave!
Director of Post Office: I also wanted to tell you about a great discount on stamps…
16
Queen:
If you do not leave at once, I am going to put appropriate postage on YOU and mail you to Timbuktu!
Director of Post Office:
Message received. I’m outta here.
King:
Oh, dear wife! Take heart! So we’ll sleep for one hundred years. After all the sleep we’ve lost raising our baby, I feel like I could sleep for one hundred years anyway!
Queen:
I am issuing an order to all our servants. Search the kingdom. Get rid of EVERY spinning wheel in the palace.
King:
You cannot avoid the fairy’s spell. It will happen no matter how hard we try to fight it. Do not fight it, dear one! Enjoy the time we have!
Queen:
How can I? How can I enjoy each day knowing that my precious child will fall asleep for 100 years at the age of 18. NoIt will NOT happen. I will not allow it to happen. I will keep a careful eye on our daughter. I will not let this come to pass!
Scene 7:
The Princess Turns 18
Narrator 2:
And so, many years passed. Eighteen years, to be precise.
Narrator 3:
The Princess had grown into a very beautiful young woman.
Narrator 1:
Sadly, the King and Queen took little happiness from their daughter, for they were always so worried about her.
Narrator 2:
On the eve of the princess’ 18th birthday, the Queen was a nervous wreck.
Queen:
I’ve had the servants check and double check all the rooms in the palace. Not a spinning wheel in sight!
King:
Then you can relax, my dear.
Queen:
I can never relax! You heard Anastasia’s spell! Our daughter will prick her finger on her 18th birthday which is tomorrow.
Narrator 3:
The very next day, the Princess woke up.
Princess:
I’m 18! Woo hoo!
Queen:
Don’t move!
Princess:
Huh! What? 17
18
Queen:
All I’m saying is: don’t move all day. Just sit there. We’ll bring you your cake. We’ll bring you your presents. We’ll bring you your meals.
Princess:
I’m not allowed to get out of bed ALL day?
King:
It’s for the best. Trust us!
Princess:
Mom, Dad! I’m 18! Not 80!
Queen:
Now, just sit there. We’ll be right back with your breakfast.
King:
Don’t budge, ok? Promise?
Narrator 1:
As soon as they left the room, the princess got out of bed.
Princess:
There is no way that I am spending my birthday in bed! I’m going to explore the palace. They’ve never really let me do it before and now that I’m 18, they can’t possibly object!
Narrator 2:
So the princess ran out of the room and explored the entire castle. She explored the south tower. Then she explored the north tower.
Narrator 3:
She went to the top room in the north tower. She opened the door and found an interesting contraption. It looked like a wheel of some sort.
Princess:
I’ve got to check it out.
Narrator 1:
Little did she know that she was about to touch a spinning wheel.
Anastasia:
I placed it there knowing she would find it. Yes, I am STILL angry about that lost invitation!
Narrator 2:
As soon as the princess touched the spinning wheel, she pricked her finger on the spinning wheel.
Narrator 3:
and fell into a deep, deep sleep.
Narrator 1:
and so did everyone else in the kingdom.
Narrator 2:
Oh how they slept!
Narrator 3:
Have you ever overslept?
Narrator 1:
Maybe you overslept for a few minutes.
Narrator 2:
Or an hour?
Narrator 3:
Or two!
Narrator 1:
Well, these people slept for one hundred years .
Narrator 2:
Would they ever wake up?
19
20
Scene 8:
The Best Wake Up Call Ever
Narrator 3:
At last, a century passed.
Narrator 1:
A handsome prince was exploring the countryside
Narrator 2:
He came upon an ancient ruin.
Prince:
This was a castle once, but now it is overrun with vines and weeds. It’s kind of creepy, to be honest.
Narrator 3:
Because he was a brave prince,
Narrator 1:
He dared to enter the ruined castle.
Prince:
Who knows what I shall find?
Narrator 2:
He passed the palace guard, who was sleep.
Narrator 3:
He passed the servants, who were asleep.
Narrator 1:
He passed the king, who was asleep.
Narrator 2:
He passed the queen, who was sleep.
Narrator 3:
And climbed to the top of the north tower,
Narrator 1:
To the highest room.
Narrator 2:
And opened the rusty door.
Narrator 3:
where he found
Prince:
the most beautiful princess in the history of the world.
Narrator 1:
Even though she was over 100 years old,
Anastasia:
118 to be exact,
Narrator 2:
she was as beautiful as the day she fell asleep.
Narrator 3:
She hadn’t aged at all.
Anastasia:
Drats!
Prince:
I shall give her one kiss, just one kiss. Then I’m getting out of here because this place is kinda scary.
Narrator 1:
The moment he kissed her...
Princess:
I came back to life!
Narrator 2:
And so did everyone else in the kingdom!
King and Queen:
We woke up! 21
22
Prince:
Will you marry me, beautiful princess!
Princess:
Give me a beat. I just woke up. I want to explore. I want to go to college. I’ve got a lot of things to do before I even think about getting married.
Prince:
Can we at least go out for an ice cream?
Princess:
Sure. Actually! I could invite you to my 18th birthday party. I’m supposed to have a great cake! It’s here somewhere.
King:
Oh dear, after 100 years, I think we better skip the cake!
Queen:
Go enjoy a nice ice cream cone with the Prince!
Narrator 3:
And now that the terrible spell had been broken...
Narrator 1:
And life returned to normal...
Queen:
Our princess can enjoy being an 18 year old!
King:
And we will never send anything with inadequate postage ever again!
Director of Post Office:
Glad to hear it!
All:
The End!
