Reason: Modern rural residential architecture should focus more on functionality and practicality, but pursuing architectural aesthetics is also encouraged if budget allows. Formalism: Imitating only the appearance of historical buildings without paying respect to their traditional structure, crafting techniques and architectural aesthetics. Formalism: Caring only about the exterior look of a house rather than the quality of its interior space. Untested strategies: Be critical of any theoretically viable passive design decisions. • Constrained by the COVID-19 situation, I have not had any chance to revisit the

research site since 2019. Most of the related research works were conducted

remotely according to online information. Misjudgements regarding the site

specifically could happen in this dissertation.

• The site, Jiuquan, is only one small city in the northwest China region. The result

and solutions concluded may not be suitable to adapt to all the other northwest

cities since they may have distinct geographical conditions and cultural

backgrounds.

• The research topics of this dissertation covered a wide range of knowledge

domains. Thus, arguments made may not be comprehensive, and some objectives

may have been missing.
