Welcome to the newly rebranded Irish Champions Festival. While we celebrate the 10th running of such a special weekend with a new name, the festival continues to offer what it was designed to do – showcase the very best of the Irish racing and breeding industries.
These two days at Leopardstown and the Curragh certainly complement each other with a combined programme of races that is rarely matched. In all, there will be ten Group races, six at Group 1 level. Today’s Group 1 races are the Coolmore America ‘Justify’ Matron Stakes and the Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes, two of the world’s finest races backed by two of Irish racing and breeding’s greatest supporters.
It is our pleasure to welcome His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa and members of the Bahrain Turf Club as we celebrate the second running of The Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes. In July, the Bahrain Turf Club and Leopardstown Racecourse launched the ‘Dublin to Bahrain’ race series, an initiative that sees a hugely welcome expansion of Bahrain’s existing sponsorship portfolio in Ireland. Irish-trained and Irish-bred horses have enjoyed terrific success when racing in Bahrain and I look forward to increased Irish participation in the Bahrain Turf Series for the 2023/2024 season.
Irish racing’s partnership with the Hong Kong Jockey Club sees the World Pool return to Leopardstown this afternoon. Our work with the HKJC, Tote and the Racecourse Media Group gives the opportunity for racing fans around the world to bet into a single pool with the opportunity for unequalled value for Tote customers.
Thank you for supporting Irish Champions Festival and I wish you all a thoroughly enjoyable day.
Suzanne Eade Chief Executive, Horse Racing Ireland

Pick a horse you think will be placed
This is a Win and Place bet combined on the same horse
If you fancy more than one horse
Pick the horses you think will come 1st & 2nd
Pick the horses you think will come 1st, 2nd & 3rd
Pick two horses to finish anywhere in the first three

A very warm welcome to the 10th running of the Irish Champions Festival, rebranded for 2023. We hope you are looking forward to celebrating top class Irish racing and breeding today at Leopardstown. A huge thank you as always to everyone who has worked to bring this exciting weekend together, including our sponsors, owners, trainers, jockeys, stable staff and patrons. Welcome also to the connections of today’s international runners, wishing them the very best of luck.
Welcome to Leopardstown for Day One of the 8th running of Longines Irish Champions Weekend. We are delighted to welcome our many supporters in person to Leopardstown Racecourse. The quality of racing throughout the whole weekend at Leopardstown and The Curragh is outstanding, and the meeting deserves its positioning as “Where Champions Become Immortal”. We are very grateful to Longines for their continued support.
The Group 1 feature race today is the Irish Champion Stakes, which has an illustrious history featuring some the best racehorses in the world. Last year we saw Magical prevail in a fantastic finish to win back-to-back Irish Champion Stakes. She repeated history similar to the outstanding six-time Group 1 winner, Dylan Thomas, who created comparable history in 2006 and 2007. This race always attracts significant International attention, won by legends of the turf such as Sea The Stars, Golden Horn and Almanzor.
This weekend is supported by sponsors and partners who make it possible to have world class prize money on offer; our race sponsors for 2023 are Bahrain Turf Club, Coolmore Stud, KPMG, Ballylinch Stud, Dullingham Park, Paddy Power and the Irish EBF.
9TH SEPTEMBER
RACE SCHEDULE
13.45 The Ballylinch Stud Irish EBF Ingabelle Stakes of €100,000
14.15 The Group 2
I would like to extend a warm welcome and thank you to our other Group 1 feature race sponsor today, Coolmore, who are generously sponsoring The Coolmore America ‘Justify’ Matron Stakes. The Coolmore America “Justify” Matron Stakes was ranked as the ‘World’s Best Fillies and Mares Race’ in the European and World Horse Thoroughbred Rankings in 2017 and 2018, and last year gave trainer Johnny Murtagh his first Group 1 Winner as Champers Elysees won the race in terrific style under Colin Keane.
For the second year, the Irish Champions Festival will host The Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes. We extend a warm welcome to His Highness Skaikh Isa Bin Salmon Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Bahrain Turf Club. Today’s feature race, the Group One Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes, will showcase the very best of flat racing, having welcomed some of the best horses in the world over the years.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our valued race sponsors, Clipper Logistics, KPMG, Ballylinch Stud, Paddy Power and The Irish Stallion Farms EBF who make a very valuable contribution, not only to the prize fund, but also to the atmosphere on the day. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our sponsors, without the support of our sponsors and partners Longines Irish Champions Weekend would not be one of the leading global race meetings.
The 2023 edition of the Coolmore America ‘Justify’ Matron Stakes marks the 20th Anniversary of Coolmore’s support for this very special race, one of the world’s top ranked fillies and mares’ races.
Before racing today, we hope you will enjoy a racing preview by the Paddy Power ‘From the Horses Mouth’ panel on our Bulmers Main Stage.
On entering the racecourse, you will be greeted by The Champions Bistro and Bar where a rolling buffet will be served throughout the day and welcome to all. The Champions Patio, located opposite the parade ring will be serving delicious BBQ options for you to enjoy. The Racing Hall will have a walk-through area, serving quick and tasty convenient food. Throughout the racecourse there will be plenty of opportunities, to purchase teas, coffees and a range of beverages from our contemporary mobile units.
WHAT’S HAPPENING
ENTERTAINMENT SCHEDULE
The Paddy Power Winning Line will commence at 11.30am l ive from the winning presentation podium. This carefully selected panel of special guests including Sam Kirwin and Kevin O’Ryan will take racegoers through the eight race card hopefully suggest winners for the day!
Later this evening we are delighted to welcome Mark McCabe back to our Bulmers Main Stage to close out the race day. There will also be top class entertainment for you to enjoy throughout the day, starting with the New Brass Kings welcoming you at the turnstile entrance. The Bazza Band will be keeping you entertained in the Champions Marquee in between racing, and then there will be a Sing-Along at the Main Stage once racing has finished. Celebrating the very best in Irish sport this weekend, we will be showing both the Rugby World Cup and the Irish Open on screens throughout the venue today.
We will have a host of music throughout the afternoon and into the evening to keep the atmosphere upbeat and exciting, while all screens will show the GAA All Ireland Football Final featuring Mayo and Tyrone after racing has finished. This weekend is the epitome of Irish horseracing and we would like thank all the owners, trainers and jockeys for their support. If we can do anything further to ensure you have an enjoyable day, please do not hesitate to contact any member of the team. WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT
You must understand, though the touch of your hand makes my pulse react
That it’s only the thrill of boy meeting girl, opposites attract
It’s physical, only logical
You must try to ignore that it means more than that
(Chorus)
Oh-oh-oh, what’s love got to do, got to do with it?
What’s love, but a second-hand emotion?
What’s love got to do, got to do with it?
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?
It may seem to you that I’m acting confused when you’re close to me
If I tend to look dazed, I read it some place, I got cause to be
There’s a name for it, There’s a phrase that fits
But whatever the reason, you do it for me
(Chorus)
What’s love, but a sweet old-fashioned notion?
What’s love got to do, got to do with it?
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?
(What’s love? A second-hand emotion)
What’s love got to do, got to do with it?
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?
(What’s love) ooh-ooh (got to do with it?) got to do with it?
SWEET CAROLINE
Where it began, I can’t begin to knowing
But then I know it’s growing strong
Was in the spring and spring became the summer
Who’d have believed you’d come along
Hands, touching hands
Reaching out, touching me, touching you
(Chorus)
Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good
I’ve been inclined to believe they never would
But now I Look at the night and it don’t seem so lonely
We filled it up with only two
And when I hurt Hurting runs off my shoulders
How can I hurt when holding you
One, touching one
Reaching out, touching me, touching you
(Chorus)
CAN’T TAKE MY EYES OFF YOU
You’re just too good to be true, Can’t take my eyes off of you
You’d be like Heaven to touch, I wanna hold you so much
At long last, love has arrived And I thank God I’m alive
You’re just too good to be true, Can’t take my eyes off of you
Pardon the way that I stare there’s nothin’ else to compare
The sight of you leaves me weak, there are no words left to speak
But if you feel like I feel, please let me know that it’s real You’re just too good to be true, Can’t take my eyes off of you
(Chorus)
I love you, baby, And if it’s quite alright, I need you, baby
To warm the lonely night, I love you, baby, trust in me when I say
Oh, pretty baby, Don’t bring me down, I pray
Oh, pretty baby, Now that I’ve found you, stay And let me love you, baby
Let me love you
(Verse 1 Repeated)
(Chorus Repeated)
DON’T STOP ME NOW
Tonight I’m gonna have myself a real good time, I feel alive and the world
I’ll turn it inside out, yeah
I’m floating around in ecstasy, So, (don’t stop me now)
(Don’t stop me) ‘Cause I’m having a good time, having a good time
I’m a shooting star leaping through the sky like a tiger, Defying the laws of gravity
I’Mma racing car passing by like Lady Godiva
I’m gonna go, go, go, there’s no stopping me
(Chorus)
I’m burnin’ through the sky, yeah
200 degrees, that’s why they call me Mister Fahrenheit
I’m travelling at the speed of light, I wanna make a supersonic man out of you
I’m having such a good time, I’m having a ball (Don’t stop me now)
If you wanna have a good time, Just give me a call (Don’t stop me now)
‘Cause I’m having a good time (Don’t stop me now)
Yes, I’m havin’ a good time, I don’t want to stop at all, yeah
I’m a rocket ship on my way to Mars on a collision course
I am a satellite I’m out of control
I am a sex machine ready to reload like an atom bomb, About to oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, explode
I’m burnin’ through the sky, yeah, 200 degrees, that’s why they call me Mister Fahrenheit
I’m travelling at the speed of light, I wanna make a supersonic woman of you
(Don’t stop me, don’t stop me, ooh, ooh, ooh) I like it
(Don’t stop me, don’t stop me) Have a good time, good time
(Don’t stop me, don’t stop me) Woah
Let loose, honey, all right
(Chorus)
Ah, da, da, da, da
Da, da, ah, ah

COOLMORE AMERICA ‘JUSTIFY’ MATRON STAKES PREVIEW
Terrifically impressive winner of last year’s Irish 1,000 Guineas but things failed to go to plan afterwards, including when a disappointing third in this race. Her season started okay when touched off in a heavy ground Listed contest here in April but hasn’t seen since. Difficult to know what to expect but Chris Hayes keeps faith with Tahiyra, although we know what she’s capable of.

Winner at up to Group 3 level for the Charltons. Was consistent without winning for her current trainer, including when a close third in a Grade 2 at Saratoga two weeks ago. Is probably a little better than her rating and has an each-way shout here.
Did well late last year at two, winning a Punchestown maiden and possibly should have won a Curragh Group 3. Pulled too hard when stepped up to 1m2f in a Curragh Listed race on her only start this year, and a hood tried here back down to 1m. Hard to make a case for her in this company.
One of the top juvenile fillies last year, but held by Tahiyra all four times they have met. She comes here on the back of a poor run in the Prix Jean Prat in July and blinkers tried, so could be likely to get in the frame.
Gained her sixth career win when comfortably accounting for Jumbly in a Curragh Group 2 in May. She has been off since then and is an intriguing runner if at her best. Has struggled after a break in the past, however.
Responded well to the application of the hood to win a Group 3 at Leopardstown in June but was unable to match that over 6f in a Naas Group 3 subsequently. Trying this trip for the first time in a Group 1 would seem ambitious and others look much more likely.
Best known for her surprise defeat of Inspiral in last year’s Falmouth Stakes, she gained a third career success in a Group 3 at Epsom in June but has been held in better company twice since. Blinkers tried here but others look much more likely.
ROGUE MILLENNIUM
Rewarded for consistency when winning the Group 2 Duke Of Cambridge at Royal Ascot, although not quite at her best in a fillies’ Group 1 at Deauville in July. Respected on her previous form.
Winner for Michael O’Callaghan last year and claimed a Listed win for her current trainer at Epsom in June. Her limitations were exposed somewhat in better company twice since, and she didn’t get home in the 1,000 Guineas on her only previous try at this trip.
TAHIYRA
Bounced back from an unlucky defeat in the 1,000 Guineas to land the Irish equivalent and the Coronation Stakes, the latter on ground plenty quick enough. Is the leading three-year-old filly at this trip and sets the standard on her first try against older opposition.
Won her first two starts, including a Navan Listed race in June. She raced too keenly and was soundly beaten in a Group 3 at Ascot in July. Hooded here but has a lot to find even on her best form.
CLEVER AND COOL
Has been kept on the go and has rewarded connections by winning a Cork Listed race and a Tipperary Group 3 over 7f despite slow starts. She deserves a go at a race like this but does look to be up against it.
Five wins to her credit, three of them coming here, including when stepping up to Group 2 level over 7f in July. She is well worth her place in a Group 1, especially at Leopardstown, although a shower or two of rain would aid her chance.

RACE VERDICT
The admirable TAHIYRA has proven herself the leading filly of her age group over this trip with her successes at the Curragh and Ascot and is hard to oppose here. Take her out and it would be a very open contest and it would be no surprise if the favourite is followed home by stablemate Homeless Songs. Zarinsk is a very effective filly at this venue and any showers that fall will be in her favour, while Meditate should be thereabouts if back to her best.

ROYAL BAHRAIN IRISH CHAMPION STAKES PREVIEW
Was highly progressive last year, winning his last three races, including Group 3 events over 1m1f at York and Newmarket, after starting the campaign with a 7f handicap win. He deserves this first shot at a Group 1 having returned from injury in fine order, beating a good yardstick in My Prospero in a Group 2 on his seasonal debut at York six weeks ago. Is suited by quick ground.
Won last season’s Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh on soft ground. He was beaten at odds-on over 1m2f on his belated reappearance in a 1m2f Curragh Group 3 event in July, but was much better in defeat behind the Prix du Jockey Club winner Ace Impact in 1m2f Group 2 contest at Deauville last month.
Deprived of a Derby bid last season but was richly compensated when beating Onesto in this race 12 months ago. Was seventh in the Arc on his first attempt at 1m4f and made a low-key seasonal debut before beating Bay Bridge in the Tattersalls Gold Cup. He was no match for Mostahdaf in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes and has plenty to find with King Of Steel on King George running, but the return to 1m2f should suit.
Last season’s Vertem Futurity winner on heavy ground, he had excuses for his flop in the 2,000 Guineas. Bounced back to land the Derby, reeling in King Of Steel towards the finish, with Sprewell back in fourth. Following up in the Irish Derby he was more workmanlike and now needs to again bounce back from a major reverse in the King George, but stable has won this 11 times.
Won last season’s 1m4f Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris and bettered that effort when runner-up to Luxembourg in this race 12 months ago, reversing Prix du Jockey Club form with Vadeni. He later finished tenth in the Arc and seventh in the Japan Cup, and returned belatedly with a respectable fourth over a trip short of his best in the 1m Prix Jacques le Marois. Should be sharper now.
POINT LONSDALE
A Group 2 winner over 7f at two, he ran only once last season. Was suited by the step up to 1m2f in the spring, winning a Curragh Group 3 and Chester Group 2 on heavy/soft. Good to firm ground probably not ideal when a soundly beaten third of five in the Coronation Cup and struggled when set a huge task in the King George. He faces a similar challenge here.
A gallant runner-up in the Derby on his stable/seasonal debut, leading from over 2f out until collared by Auguste Rodin near the finish, the pair clear of White Birch and Sprewell. He went one better in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot when readily justifying favouritism. Was outstayed by two high-class older horses in the King George and it’s possible that a strong-run 1m2f will suit him ideally.
Started the season with a low-key Naas win before commanding C&D Derby Trial win. The ground was very testing then, but he handled quick going effectively when a creditable fourth in the Derby. In contrast, he did not seem to enjoy good going when a lack-lustre sixth behind Auguste Rodin in the Irish Derby.
A three-time Group 1 winner against her own sex, most recently over 1m in this year’s Falmouth Stakes. She wasn’t helped by a steady pace when bidding for a repeat of last season’s Nassau success at Goodwood, and deprived a below-par Paddington of the runner-up spot in the fourrunner Juddmonte International at York. She can give a good account against the colts.

ALFLAILA - JIM CROWLEY
After an initial career over jumps, Jim Crowley switched to the Flat in 2006, a radical transformation that was sealed when he was crowned British champion jockey in the 2016 season. Following his appointment as number one jockey to Hamdan Al Maktoum, he excelled on horses such as top sprinter Battaash, on whom he won eight races including the Nunthorpe in successive years. His partnership with Baaeed was a highlight of the British season in both 2021 and 2022, involving a sequence of six Group 1 wins. This season he has added four Group 1 wins to his record, including Anmaat in the Prix d’Ispahan and Hukum in the King George for Alflaila’s trainer Owen Burrows. He has ridden infrequently in Ireland, his sole success from around 20 mounts coming on Lady Springbank in a Guineas trial at Leopardstown in March 2010.
LUXEMBOURG - SEAMIE HEFFERNAN
Seamie Heffernan has been associated with Aidan O’Brien since 1996 after serving his apprenticeship with Jim Bolger. All but a few of his major victories have been achieved for O’Brien, often on supposed “secondstring” material, including Anthony Van Dyck in the Derby at Epsom in 2019. He has won 11 Irish Classics, including the Irish Derby on four occasions and the Irish 1,000 Guineas five times. He won consecutive editions of the Irish Champion Stakes on Cape Blanco in 2010 and So You Think in 2011, and captured the race for a third time on Magical three years ago. In 2016 he partnered Highland Reel to finish second to stablemate Found in the Arc and retained the ride to triumph at the Breeders’ Cup.
ONESTO - FRANKIE DETTORI
More than any other British-based jockey since Sir Gordon Richards and Lester Piggott, Frankie Dettori’s fame has transcended the sport of horseracing. His imminent retirement will mark the end of an era defined by his infectious enthusiasm and extrovert personality. A distinguished roll call of worldwide big-race victories testifies to his remarkable durability. The charismatic Italian has maintained his impact at the top of the profession in the 27 years since a career-defining seven-winner haul at Ascot in September 1996. He has won the Irish Champion Stakes on six occasions, including four times between 1998 and 2002 on Swain, Daylami, Fantastic Light and Grandera. He triumphed on Snow Fairy in 2012 and Golden Horn in 2015. The 2023 season has already been significantly enriched by his farewell appearances at racing’s top venues. His legion of Irish fans will no doubt be hoping to see his trademark flying dismount for a final time over the course of the Irish Champions Festival.
POINT LONSDALE - DYLAN BROWNE MCMONAGLE
Donegal-born Dylan Browne McMonagle was a star rider on Ireland’s pony racing circuit from an early age. He has displayed a maturity way beyond his years in making a virtually seamless transition to the track under the guidance of former champion jockey Joseph O’Brien, for whom he has notched 15 stakes wins since April 2021, including a first Group 1 on Al Riffa in last season’s National Stakes. Winner of the apprentice title in 2021 and 2022, he negotiated the loss of his claim without any loss of momentum and shows every sign of maturing into a major star in the senior ranks.
NASHWA - HOLLIE DOYLE
Hollie Doyle has been a pioneering figure in British racing, setting a new record for winners ridden in a season by a female jockey with a total of 116 in 2019. She has broken that record successively with 151 wins in 2020 and 172 last season. In August 2020 at Windsor, she became the first woman to ride five winners on the same card in Britain. This season she became the first female jockey to win a French Classic and the first British female jockey to win a European Classic when she rode Nashwa to victory in the Prix de Diane. She has since claimed the Nassau Stakes on the same filly.
AL RIFFA - CHRISTOPHE SOUMILLON
Belgian-born Christophe Soumillon, one of the most successful international riders in racing history, has been champion jockey in France on ten occasions, gaining his first title in 2003 and his most recent in 2018. His talent blossomed early, and he had only just turned 20 when riding Anabaa to win the Prix du Jockey Club in 2001. He has won France’s premier Classic four times, and ridden 15 French Classic winners in all. Other highlights of a distinguished career include Arc victories on Dalakhani (2003) and Zarkava (2008), a Breeders’ Cup win on Shirocco in 2005, the King George on Hurricane Run in 2006, back-to-back wins in the Dubai World Cup on Thunder Snow in 2017 and 2018, and a French Champion Hurdle on Mandali. He won the Irish Champion Stakes on Almanzor in 2016.
AUGUSTE RODIN - RYAN MOORE
Ballydoyle’s retained rider is a three-time British champion who won the title in 2006, 2008, and 2009. A son of trainer Gary Moore, he started out with Richard Hannon before joining Sir Michael Stoute. He rode the most recent of his 15 British Classic winners on Auguste Rodin in this year’s Derby, and brought his Irish Classic tally to ten when landing the Irish Derby on the same horse. He is widely recognised as one of the leading Flat riders in world racing and has won the Irish Champion Stakes on four occasions, first on The Grey Gatsby, dramatically edging out the O’Brientrained Australia in a thrilling finish in 2014. He took the race in 2019 on the mare Magical, and is now seeking a third consecutive triumph having partnered St Mark’s Basilica in 2021 and Luxembourg 12 months ago.
KING OF STEEL - KEVIN STOTT
Seven years after a first Pattern success in Sweden, Danish-born Kevin Stott has become a top rider in Britain, enjoying a career-best 116 winners in 2022. His association with trainer Kevin Ryan provided his first Group 1 success on Hello Youmzain in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at the 2020 Royal Ascot meeting. In March 2023 he started as the new retained rider for the Amo Racing team and was quickly into his stride, riding Indestructible to land the Craven Stakes. Last month he partnered Bucanero Fuerte to a spectacular win in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh. He has been aboard his Irish Champion Stakes mount King Of Steel on all three outings this season, finishing second on the 66-1 chance in the Derby before landing the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot and taking third place in the King George.
SPREWELL - SHANE FOLEY
Shane ‘Dusty’ Foley secured his first Classic win aboard the Adrian Keatley-trained Jet Setting in the Irish 1,000 Guineas in 2016. Two years later he won the Irish 2,000 Guineas on Romanised for Ken Condon. Since then he has been associated with a succession of top-class fillies trained by Jessica Harrington, notably Millisle, Albigna, No Speak Alexanderwho provided a 25-1 victory in the 2021 Matron Stakes - Discoveries and Magical Lagoon, winner of the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Irish Oaks in 2021. He had his best year numerically with 94 winners in Ireland in 2020 and enjoyed the most valuable win of his career when landing last year’s Goffs Million on Galeron for Charlie Hills.

RACE VERDICT
A terrific field for Ireland’s top race. Aidan O’Brien performed a wondrous feat of training in preparing AUGUSTE RODIN for the Derby after his 2,000 Guineas failure. The champion trainer has won this race 11 times and may now deliver a perfect encore of his Epsom feat after the debacle of the King George, from which the Derby runner-up King Of Steel emerged with his reputation confirmed, though not enhanced. Nashwa can hold her own with the colts and may vie for a place with last year’s principals Luxembourg and Onesto. [Alan Sweetman] Source: Racing Post

RACE VERDICT
Planty of these with chances as expected. Nusret comes here fresh after winning at the Curragh in June. Dartan could not be coming here in better form after two wins last week at Bellewstown. Comfort Zone is intriguing having not run since winning over flights in January. The one to be on could well be MERLIN GIANT, not seen since disappointing in the Galway Hurdle but with every indication that he could be well handicapped. [Justin O’Hanlon] Source: Racing Post

SELECTION: NO MORE PORTER
Wide open race with some interesting Britisg challengers and a couple of unexposed types from the home brigade in Broadhurst and Kayhana catch the eye. More seasoned handicappers like the constantly progressive Dunum and recent Cork winner Gypsy Woman wilol go well, as should the latter’s stable companion Mutasarref after a couple of encouraging runs. Another chance though is given to HOTROCKET, who looked very progressive early in the summer before the ground went for him at Galway. [Justin O’Hanlon]

Horse Care on Raceday
The wellbeing of horses is integral to the thoroughbred racehorse industry. Racecourses play their part through adherence to a clear set of industry standards. Prior to each race meeting an independent track inspection is carried out by an IHRB accredited “Clerk of the Course”. This individual will check all equine facilities, including ground conditions, railing, stables and veterinary care facilities. All racecourses must meet the required standards to be granted a licence to race.
At every race meeting a team of equine veterinary surgeons supervise the wellbeing of horses. All racecourse vets must be members of the Association of Irish Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons (AIRVS) and will have received specialist training in the field of racecourse work.
The IHRB Veterinary Officer at each meeting has responsibilities including:
• Horse Identification - achieved through checking their microchip numbers against those recorded in their passports.
• Drug Testing - a process is vital to ensure the integrity of the sport.
• General oversight of horse care and wellbeing.
• Provision of advice to the Stewards, on veterinary matters. A racecourse vet will check horses at the start for each race. If they deem any horse unfit to race at this point, they have the authority to withdraw the horse. During the race the vets follow on, within the convoy of vehicles seen on the service road. Other vehicles in this convoy include doctors, paramedics and ground-staff. This whole team will swing into action if any incident occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse or jockey receiving treatment. This allows the veterinary or medical teams some privacy to fully assess the casualty. Racegoers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured participant.
The Blue Cross Horse Ambulance are also present every meeting, the service is operated by skilled personnel using specially equipped horse ambulances. They work to support the Veterinary Team. They respond swiftly to any incidents involving injured horses and transport them off the racetrack for specialist veterinary care if required.
The presentation of the horses on race day reflects the preparation at home. The results of good feeding, good housing, good health, and good wellbeing are clear to see when a horse appears at the races bright-eyed with a gleaming coat and a spring in their step. Raceday is great opportunity for the public to observe the high standards of care given to these horses.
All horses are accompanied on raceday by their own dedicated stable staff. These skilled people will have spent many months and sometimes years preparing their horses for the raceday. They lavish care and attention, day in, day out, in all weathers, and the industry is extremely proud of these excellent individuals. They help maintain Ireland’s position as an international leader in the thoroughbred breeding, training, and racing industry, ensuring best-in-class integrity and equine welfare standards.
