On behalf of Matheson, it is a great pleasure to welcome you to Day 4 of the 2021 Christmas Racing Festival – Matheson Day – at Leopardstown, featuring the Grade 1, Matheson Hurdle. The pandemic has once again caused difficulties, disruption and uncertainty for everyone throughout 2021. Credit is due to the organising committee of the festival for putting together today’s exciting programme of racing in a manner which complies with the public health guidelines. We hope that all attending remain safe and appropriately socially distanced throughout the day. With three days of exciting racing already completed, the top-class fields across today’s seven race card, including a pair of Grade 1s, promise to up the ante even further! We are especially delighted to partner once again with Leopardstown to sponsor the Matheson Hurdle, a race which has become synonymous with incredible two-mile hurdlers such as Istabraq (four-time winner), Hurricane Fly (four-time winner) and most recently Sharjah, who returns again this year seeking a fourth win in a row. The race starts at 2:20 pm, and is not to be missed! I hope you enjoy today’s racing.

Welcome to the final day of the Leopardstown Christmas Festival; Matheson Day. Todays raceday, features two top class Grade 1 races, The Matheson Hurdle and the Neville Hotels Novice Chase. Todays final raceday will come to a close with the crowning of the Plusvital Leading Trainer Award to coincide with the running of the Plusvital INH Flat Race. Today has also traditionally served as our family day, unfortunately, due to the rise in Covid cases across the country, reflected amongst the Leopardstown team and wider teams that facilitate hosting a 4 day racing festival, our four day festival has had to run behind closed doors. Today’s feature race, The Matheson Hurdle has always been a heavyweight race, with an honours list to rival any! The great Istabraq, Brave Inca and of course a Leopardstown hero, Hurricane Fly! The current defending champion Sharjah, has already matched the feat of the great Istabraq and Grabel before by winning three in a row but could do something special today by standing alone in the history books with a fourth consecutive victory. The other feature race of the day, the Neville Hotels Novice Chase has also proven to be a high quality affair, with last years winner Monkfish going on to further success both here at Dublin Racing Festival in February and at the Cheltenham Festival in March. This year, we’re hoping for an equally competitive race. USEFUL INFORMATION First Aid The Order of Malta First Aid is situated adjacent to the Champions Marquee near the main entrance building.

Bottles and Glasses Customers are requested to take drinks to the closest available table to consume, as per Government guidelines on consuming alcohol on a premises.

Covid-19 Pass or Proof of Recovery Attendees will have the opportunity to present their covid pass or proof of immunity before entering the racecourse. They will be provided with a corresponding wristband which will grant them entry to and the opportunity to use indoor seating areas to consume food and alcohol.

Traffic Arrangements When departing the racecourse, to aid the smooth flow of traffic, please follow Parking Attendants, Garda instructions and directional signals.

Fire Exits Fire Exits are signed in all buildings with exit locations noted on the Racecourse map at the front of this race card.

HORSE WELFARE – A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. The Association of Irish Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons (AIRCVS)
