featuring The Matheson Hurdle

Day 4 Tuesday, 29 December 2020 Leopardstown Christmas Festival

On behalf of Matheson, it is a great pleasure to welcome you all to Day 4 of the 2020 Christmas Festival - Matheson Day - at Leopardstown, featuring the Grade 1, Matheson Hurdle. 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone, but it is great to see that the Leopardstown Festival continues to be a part of the Christmas season, even behind closed doors. Today’s racing is set to be as exciting as ever, with top class fields across seven races that you will not want to miss. We are delighted once again to partner with Leopardstown and to sponsor The Matheson Hurdle, a special race which has been associated with some of the greatest two-mile hurdlers of our time, such as Istabraq (four-time winner), Hurricane Fly (four-time winner) and most recently, two-time winner Sharjah, who will be looking to make it a hat trick this year! The race takes place at 2:30pm and is not to be missed! I hope you enjoy today’s racing.

Tim Husbands CEO, Leopardstown

Welcome to the final day of the Leopardstown Christmas Festival, where International Law firm Matheson are title sponsors featuring the Gr1 Matheson Hurdle. Due to these unprecedented times, we are very sorry we cannot welcome our many supporters in person to Leopardstown Racecourse. However, there are so many ways you can #BeInvolved at Leopardstown Christmas Festival from the comfort of your own home, so please do look at our website and social channels for more detail. The Leopardstown Christmas Festival is one of the major sporting events of the year and we thank you for your continued support. The Grade 1 Matheson Hurdle was won last year by Sharjah for the second year in a row. This race has a rich history of producing consecutive winners including Istabraq, Hurricane Fly and Grabel. We do hope Sharjah can retain his worthy title. The day also features another Grade 1 race – The Neville Hotels Novice Steeplechase which was won last year by Battleoverdoyen for winning jockey Davy Russell and trainer Gordon Elliot. So far we have had a thrilling Christmas Festival, the talent that Ireland continues to produce is highlighted by the quality horse racing we are able to stage at the Christmas Festival. We value our race day sponsors support, as without their contributions we would not be able to stage such high-quality National Hunt racing. Matheson, Neville Hotels, Adare Manor, Pigsback, Irish Stallion Farms EBF, Advent Insurance and Irish Injured Jockeys Fund are a combination of new and old sponsors and we hope that they will continue to sponsor for many more years. We would like to warmly thank all the owners, trainers, and jockeys for their continued support. Whilst we are very sorry we cannot be enjoying the races together, we hope you do create your own excitement wherever you are whilst watching, and I look forward to personally welcoming you back to Leopardstown very soon and thank you for your ongoing support. As the Christmas Festival draws to a close we have the exciting Dublin Racing Festival to look forward to on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th February 2021, with over ₏1.8 million of prize money on offer over the weekend. I would like to thank you for supporting the Leopardstown Christmas Festival from home. We truly appreciate it. We wish you a happy and prosperous New Year.

Thank You For Your Support

TODAY’S BIG RACES FESTIVAL 2020

1.50PM: The Neville Hotels Novice Chase (Grade 1) Gordon Elliott has dominated this event lately, an odds-on victory for Battleoverdoyen 12 months ago supplying him with a fourth success in five years. However, this time around it looks as if the major players are the Willie Mulllins-trained Monkfish and Paul Nolan’s Latest Exhibition, separated by only a neck at the finish of the Albert Bartlett at Cheltenham in March. Both horses got off the mark at the first attempt over fences. Monkfish, given a solid foundation to his career as a point-to-point winner for Cormac Doyle, jumped well on his way to an easy win from stablemate Ontheropes at Fairyhouse a month ago. Latest Exhibition was in action earlier, making his chasing debut at Punchestown in October. He made a few mistakes in the early part of the race before settling into a better rhythm, ending up a convincing winner from the more experienced School Boy Hours. However, he suffered a reverse when odds-on favourite for a Grade 2 contest at the same venue, losing out to the Elliott-trained Pencilfulloflead. That form looks perfectly respectable in the light of the winner’s good second to Colreevy at Limerick on Saturday, but Monkfish sets the standard and can give him the champion trainer his first win in this event since Don Poli in 2014. Elliott relies on Conflated, a convincing winner at Navan on his third start over fences. He is one of two runners for Gigginstown who also have Noel Meade’s widemargin Thurles winner Eurobot in the field. Foxy Jacks and Heaven Help Us are up against it at this level. Battleoverdoyen and Davy Russell wins the Nevilles Hotel Novice Chase at Leopardstown.

2.25PM: The Matheson Hurdle (Grade 1) The great Hurricane Fly won this event three times in a row for Willie Mullins, and the champion trainer now attempts the same feat with Sharjah, ridden to victory by his son Patrick here in 2018 and 2019. Runner-up to Epatante in last season’s Champion Hurdle, Sharjah has been a stable outsider for his two wins in the race. It looks as if he is set to fill the same role again, with the ante-post market for the race indicating a distinct preference for the JP McManus-owned Saint Roi, an emphatic winner of last season’s County Hurdle. In contrast to Sharjah, last seen when an unplaced favourite for the big amateur handicap at the Galway festival, Saint Roi has the advantage of race-fitness and faces a fascinating renewal of rivalry with the Gordon Elliott-trained Abacadabras who beat him narrowly in the Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown last month. That race was run at a muddling gallop which was probably not ideal for Saint Roi whose jumping left a bit to be desired. He should be seen to better effect off a stronger pace. Henry de Bromhead’s Aspire Tower, second to the Mullins-trained Burning Victory in last season’s Triumph Hurdle, made a fine start in the senior ranks when beating Abacadabras at Down Royal. He has to be taken seriously in his bid to become the first four-year-old to win this race since Dermot Weld’s Unaccompanied in 2011. Petit Mouchoir, winner of this event for de Bromhead in 2016 and runner-up 12 months ago, lines out now for the Elliott team. The long-absent Saldier adds depth to the powerful Mullins challenge.

Patrick Mullins on board Sharjah winning the Matheson Hurdle.

RACE VERDICT

An open look to this. Perhaps MORATORIUM can raise his game now sent handicapping after his three novice chase runs revealed some promise. Memory Tree, Champagne Beauty and Bitview Colin look solid, while Scully’s Dream has a squeak if avoiding errors. Fiveaftermidnight was runner-up in this last year and can go well again. RACE VERDICT

This looks like a competitive maiden hurdle. Lifetime Ambition sets the standard and Forged In Fire has 32l to make up with him on Navan running. The latter’s stablemate, Risk Factor, can’t be ignored, while the Willie Mullins-trained pair of Stattler and Glens Of Antrim are noteworthy. However, BARBARY MASTER will appreciate going up in trip today and can improve upon his hurdling debut to get off the mark. [Tyrone Molloy] Source: Racing Post

HORSE WELFARE – A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. RACE VERDICT

An interesting clash between a pair who dominated the finish of the Albert Bartlett. MONKFISH should have the measure of Latest Exhibition who has questions to answer after a Punchestown defeat. Gordon Elliott has such a good recent record in this race that it would be unwise to rule out Conflated. [Alan Sweetman] Source: Racing Post

RACE VERDICT

This could boil down to a rematch of the Morgiana Hurdle which turned out to be a rather muddling affair which was probably not ideal for the winner or for the runner-up. That said, SAINT ROI may have been slightly more inconvenienced, and gets the vote to turn the tables on Abacadabras. It would be unwise to rule out Sharjah, bidding to win this for the third time, and Aspire Tower deserves respect in a race last won by a four-year-old in 2011. [Alan Sweetman] Source: Racing Post

Henry de Bromhead has two strong contenders. Rachael Blackmore’s choice of GABBYS CROSS over Premium Package appears significant. Jacksons Gold may be capable of a big run under top-weight. Millen To One, second in this race last year, could take a share of the money again. [Alan Sweetman] Source: Racing Post

A smart-looking point winner for Ellen Doyle last season, HOLLOW GAMES made an excellent start for Gordon Elliott at Punchestown and looks set to follow up. Mare Quimby looked well above-average on her debut and it may be worth overlooking her disappointing Navan run. Eurotiep must also enter calculations. [Alan Sweetman] Source: Racing Post
