SAVILLS IRELAND PROUDLY SPONSORING LEOPARDSTOWN CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL

The Savills Chase Day On behalf of Savills Ireland, it is my pleasure to welcome you to The Savills Chase Day at the Leopardstown Christmas Festival 2020. It has been a year like no other, and though times may be different, we are delighted to continue our sponsorship of The Savills Chase for the third year. This Grade 1 Steeplechase was first run in its current form in 1992 and has since been won by many great champions including Denman, Beef or Salmon, Synchronised, Bobs Worth, Kemboy, and most recently, Delta Work – winner of the Savills Chase in 2019. I, along with everyone at Savills, am delighted to see the Leopardstown Christmas Festival continue this year of years. Though we will all miss being there on the day, thanks to the perseverance and dedication from the team at Leopardstown we can still enjoy the main event in the National Hunt season, now from anywhere in the world, or the comfort and safety of our homes. As always, it has been a pleasure working with the team at Leopardstown. At Savills, we pride ourselves on bringing together the very best talent in the property industry – which mirrors the elite group of horses, jockeys and trainers brought together by the team for the Festival. The Savills Chase is proving to be the race of the season – and we hope you all enjoy. Wishing you a happy, safe and prosperous 2021,

Mark Reynolds Managing Director, Savills Ireland

Tim Husbands CEO, Leopardstown

Welcome to the Third day of the Leopardstown Christmas Festival, The Savills Day featuring the Savills Chase. Due to these unprecedented times, we are very sorry we cannot welcome our many supporters in person to Leopardstown Racecourse. However, there are so many ways you can #BeInvolved at Leopardstown Christmas Festival from the comfort of your own home, so please do look at our website and social channels for more detail. The Leopardstown Christmas Festival is one of the major sporting events of the year and we thank you for your continued support. The Savills Chase is a highlight of the Christmas Festival and has a rich roll of honour to match its prestigious title as one of the principal staying chases of the National Hunt season. Most recently the 3-mile feature race was won by trainer Gordon Elliott with Delta Work who subsequently won the Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup at Dublin Racing Festival. Other notable winners of the race include Road To Respect, Outlander, Don Poli, Synchronized, Bobs Worth, Tidal Bay and Denman. This year running will surely live up to all expectations and produce another story worthy of the race’s prestigious title. To compliment the Leopardstown Chase we have the Grade 1 Leopardstown Christmas Hurdle, won last year by the fantastic mare Apple’s Jade for Gordon Elliot and Gigginstown House Stud for a third successive year in a row. I, along with everyone at Leopardstown, would like to thank all our sponsors today; Savills, Ballymaloe Foods, Pertemps, The Irish Daily Star Newspaper, Midland Legal Solicitors and Tote Ireland who have all generously supported today – without their sponsorship we would not be able to stage such high-quality National Hunt Racing. “The Paddy Power Winning Line” commences at 10.00 a.m. today virtually - it will be streamed live on Leopardstown Facebook, Twitter and Paddy Power Facebook and Twitter channels. We would like to warmly thank all the owners, trainers, and jockeys for their continued support. Whilst we are very sorry we cannot be enjoying the races together, we hope you do create your own excitement wherever you are whilst watching, and I look forward to personally welcoming you back to Leopardstown very soon and thank you for your ongoing support. We hope you enjoy watching Savills Day at the Leopardstown Christmas Festival and we will look forward to the final day of the Christmas Festival – Matheson Day.

RACE VERDICT

These races are always risky for wagers due to the qualification system, with a top-six finish required for Cheltenham participation. For many, this race is their cup final for the season, however. UNEXPECTED DEPTH is becoming a winning machine and makes plenty of appeal. Jukebox Jive is another progressive last-time-out winner. [Johnny Ward] Source: Racing Post

TODAY’S BIG RACES FESTIVAL 2020

1.15PM: The Leopardstown Christmas Hurdle (Grade 1) Gordon Elliott has won the last three runnings of this Grade 1 with the indomitable Apple’s Jade and he appears to hold the aces once again here in Sire Du Berlais, Fury Road and The Storyteller. Each of the trio has a different profile, with the dual Pertemps Handicap Hurdle hero Sire Du Berlais now looking to step up at the highest level. He is rising nine years of age, but defied concerns about an inadequate trip to record a first Grade 2 success in the Lismullen Hurdle. As a consequence, JP McManus’ charge comes here as the top-rated runner on 158, so he will doubtless take a bit of stopping under Mark Walsh. Fury Road, third in the Albert Bartlett Novice Hurdle in March, returned with a decisive win over Dewcup at Punchestown. This is another step up, but he is a dour stayer with scope to improve. The Storyteller is more of an open book at this stage. Second to Sire Du Berlais in a great spectacle at Cheltenham last March when receiving three pounds, his latest hurdle outing resulted in a win at Galway in September, since when he has been in rare form over fences, plundering a famous victory in the Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal. He’s sure to give punters a run for their money at the very least. Willie Mullins relies on Bacardys and Bapaume, with the latter surely the more dangerous, having run respectably behind Honeysuckle in the Hatton’s Grace. A Grade 1 winner at Leopardstown, he might find a couple of these too progressive. Ronald Pump, representing Matthew Smith’s upwardly mobile stable, was second in the Fairyhouse showpiece, having crashed out in the Lismullen on his reappearance following his Stayers’ Hurdle second in March. Second in the handicap hurdle on this card off a mark of 145 12 months ago, he is now the second highest rated on duty in this and must be a major player. Of the others, Flooring Porter, Jack Kennedy with so impressive off 136 in Apple’s Jade winning the a handicap at Navan, is Leopardstown Christmas 2 6T R the sort who could run H -Gigginstown 2 9T H D E C E M B E Hurdle for well at a big price. House Stud

2.25PM: Savills Steeplechase (Grade 1) Grade 1 Savills Chase A mouth-watering Grade 1 that sees many of the best chasers seek to lay down an early marker. Delta Work, who beat the re-opposing Kemboy and Presenting Percy in this last year, has the benefit of a run, having kept on without threatening too much when fifth in the Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal. He is top-rated and should pose a serious threat once again, with his Gordon Elliott-trained stable-mate Presenting Percy a fascinating rival again. An encouraging fourth at Down Royal, he duly improved to record a taking success at Thurles, when he looked to have recaptured much of his old panache. He is rising ten years of age and has failed to win here in three starts, but there may still be a big day in him. Kemboy made his comeback at Thurles, when not quite able to cope with the race-fit Presenting Percy. He will be sharper for that and his excellent course form includes a win in this race in 2018. Willie Mullins will also saddle Allaho, Easy Game, Tornado Flyer and Melon, each of which could conceivably improve to figure. Another trainer with multiple runners is Henry De Bromhead, whose trio include the fascinating pair of Minella Indo and A Plus Tard. Minella Indo has bolted up in two inferior events this term, having thrown a bit of a wobbler when collared by Champ in the RSA Chase last March. This will be the acid test for him now. Never out of the first three in ten starts, he is brilliantly consistent, so it’s just a question of how he will fare in this heady echelon. A Plus Tard boasts a similar record of never finishing out of the frame, which is a credit to their trainer. Second to Castlegrace Paddy in the Fortria Chase, he is stepping back up to this trip, his one previous attempt, when third to Delta Work at Punchestown in 2019, proving inconclusive at the end of a busy season. At just six years of age, he is a potential springer. Plenty of the others have chances as well. Of those, Samcro and Fakir D’Oudairies are both trying three miles for a first time and are of obvious interest. Samcro ran a middling sort of race behind Battleoverdoyen at Down Royal but clearly has the scope to be better at this distance, and the same applies to Fakir D’Oudairies, whose sole effort at two-and-half miles resulted in a 22-length Grade 1 triumph in the Drinmore Chase. Just five years of age, he ran a nice race behind Notebook on his Naas return and is massively unexposed.

RACE VERDICT

If Jessica Harrington’s mare RAPID RESPONSE can produce a performance keeping with her useful chase form of recent months she will be hard to beat. Aircraft Carrier, who needs to leave previous modest hurdles form behind him, brings strong credentials from the Flat. The lightly-raced Boher Cailin is interesting. Two Shoe Tom and Handsworth also make some appeal. [Alan Sweetman] Source: Racing Post

HORSE WELFARE – A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. Several of these have been let down by jumping on an initial attempt over fences. Last season’s Ballymore third THE BIG GETAWAY gets the vote to step up from his chasing debut at Navan. Cedarwood Road needs to jump straighter than at Naas. Sempo, who dislodged his rider at the first at Naas, should make a useful chaser in time. Source: Racing Post
