Today’s racing offers the spectacle of two Grade 1’s –The Paddy Power Future Champions Novice Hurdle won last year by Abracadabras in an action-packed race and Paddy’s Rewards Club Steeplechase won by A Plus Tard defeating the favourite Chacun Pour Soi by three lengths. The most valuable race of the festival – the €150,000 Paddy Power Chase is off at 14:55pm and has attracted its usual competitive entry. Won last year by the Gordon Elliot trained Roaring Bull who led home in a thrilling finish to beat Fitzhenry. The 33/1 outsider Roaring Bull won the race in a memorable fashion by Jerry Hannon’s dramatic commentary. We will look forward to more thrilling finishes and fairy-tale stories in this year’s Paddy Power Chase which always provides a memorable race. The Paddy Power Winning Line will be streamed live on Leopardstown Facebook, Twitter and Paddy Power Facebook and Twitter channels from 10am approx. today. TODAY’S BIG RACES FESTIVAL 2020

1.10PM: Paddy’s Rewards Club Steeplechase (Grade 1) CHACUN POUR SOI, one of the stars of the Willie Mullins stable, bids to make amends for his odds-on defeat in this event in 2019. Twelve months ago he was making his seasonal debut and was no match for the Henry de Bromhead-trained A Plus Tard. This year he arrives with a race under his belt, though admittedly he did not need to exert himself in order to beat the only other finisher in the Hilly Way Chase at Cork earlier in the month. His stablemate Annamix had been frustrating, but he is now two from two over fences. While it seems unlikely he will be quite good enough, he is still a bit of an unknown quantity. Once again Henry De Bromhead provides the most likely dangers to Chacun Pour Soi, this time in the shape of Notebook and Put The Kettle On, who has been redirected from her aborted Kempton engagement. Notebook’s fine novice campaign last season was highlighted by Grade 1 wins over course and distance in the Racing Post Novice Chase and in the Arkle at the Dublin Racing Festival. A beaten favourite for the Arkle Trophy at Cheltenham that was won by Put The Kettle On, Gigginstown Stud’s German-bred got the new season off to a good start with a handsome win in the Grade 2 Poplar Square Chase at Naas. Put The Kettle On continues to defy expectations. She has become something of a Cheltenham specialist, a redoubtable type who receives weight here and will capitalise if the principals don’t bring their respective A games. Castlegrace Paddy claimed a notable scalp when beating A Plus Tard in the Fortria Chase at Navan before finding the company too demanding in the Tingle Creek at Sandown. Pat Fahy’s fivetime chase winner ran a fine race when fourth to the British-trained Simply Ned in this event two years ago. Le Richebourg, a top novice two seasons ago with two course and distance Grade 1s to his name, spent a long time sidelined before reappearing over a longer trip in the John Durkan 2 T ER Memorial at Punchestown. He 6 nowH - 2 9 T H D EC E M B has something to prove having been pulled-up before four out in a contest won by the Mullins-trained Min for a third consecutive year.

1.45PM: Paddy Power Future Champions Novice Hurdle (Grade 1 Willie Mullins has a strong hand for this Grade 1 event which he had won four times in a row before the Gordon Elliott-trained Abacadabras broke the sequence 12 months ago. APPRECIATE IT staked his claim as a potential novice star for Mullins in winning two bumpers at this venue last season before taking the runner-up spot behind stablemate Ferny Hollow in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper at Cheltenham. He had a gentle introduction to hurdling in a weak maiden hurdle at Cork last month. Lack of experience should not be a problem, since his early education was obtained in point-to-points for Pat Doyle’s famed Holycross nursery. Like Appreciate It, Elliott’s leading contender Ballyadam also began his career in a top point-to-point yard and was a £330,000 purchase to join the powerful Cheveley Park team after winning for Colin McKeever at Portrush 14 months ago. He is already a Grade 1 winner, having beaten the Noel Meade-trained Cask Mate with plenty to spare in the Royal Bond at Fairyhouse. Ballyadam’s stablemate Call Me Lyreen is unbeaten in three starts over hurdles, the latest in a Grade 2 contest at Naas. Keskonrisk, sold for £370,000 after winning a Fairyhouse bumper on New Year’s Day for the Hyde family, had to work hard to capture a maiden hurdle at Fairyhouse on his first start for Joseph O’Brien. He should be better for the experience. Noel Meade’s four-year-old JP McManus-owned Thedevilscoachman is unbeaten in two following his bumper and maiden hurdle wins. This is a big step up for him.

2.55PM: Paddy Power Steeplechase (Grade B) Gordon Elliott has supplied two of the last four winners of the race and could again be influential with the likes of Farclas, who made a satisfactory return from a long absence when fifth behind Daly Tiger at Punchestown last month, and last year’s 16-1 winner Roaring Bull, who struggled over a longer trip at Fairyhouse last time after a fine effort in taking second place in the Troytown at Navan. Leading owner JP McManus loves having a tilt at this race. He has several possible candidates including Fitzhenry, who was second in the race 12 months ago and third in 2018. Henry de Bromhead’s Listowel festival winner Minella Fair, and Philip Dempsey’s runner Ten Ten, who warmed up with a hurdles run at Naas, are other interesting runners in the green-and-gold colours. Joseph O’Brien’s five-year-old Home By The Lee won his first two races over fences before finishing third of four behind star novice Envoi Allen in the Drinmore. Despite his relative experience he could make his presence felt in his first handicap, while Dermot McLoughlin’s Captain CJ sports a first-time tongue-tie following a respectable effort in a good race at Fairyhouse. Willie Mullins relies on Castlebawn West and Class Conti, who was beaten when falling in this last year before finishing second in the Thyestes Chase. He doesn’t have the benefit of a run since then, which Castlebawn West does, following a decent effort over an inadequate trip when third behind Daly Tiger at Punchestown.

HORSE WELFARE – A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.
