I am delighted to welcome you to today's Racing Post Day at the Leopardstown Christmas festival. During this incredibly difficult year for the sport, we are proud to be increasing our support for Leopardstown and Irish racing as a whole. Today's highlight, the Grade 1 Racing Post Novice Chase, has a storied history, having been won by such stars of the sport as Danoli, Moscow Flyer, Sizing Europe and Douvan, while last year's winner Notebook has since gone on to assert his credentials as one of Ireland's most exciting chasers. While we hope to see more superstars today, the ongoing absence of spectators will be keenly felt on this traditional highlight of the jumps season. I hope and believe that next year fans will be back in numbers at this fantastic fixture, but in the meantime I wish all trainers, jockeys, owners and stable staff at Leopardstown and beyond the best of luck and a very happy Christmas. Christmas Festival. Due to these unprecedented times, we are very sorry we cannot welcome our many supporters in person to Leopardstown Racecourse. However, there are so many ways you can #BeInvolved at Leopardstown Christmas Festival from the comfort of your own home, so please do look at our website and social channels for more detail. The Leopardstown Christmas Festival is one of the major sporting events of the year and we thank you for your continued support. I would like to thank the Racing Post for their ongoing partnership with Leopardstown. We look forward to the feature race today and what will be one of the highlights of the festival, the Grade 1 Racing Post Novice Steeplechase. This Grade 1 event has provided many racing memories over the years, notably last year when Notebook gained an impressive victory for Rachael Blackmore and Henry De Bromhead in the winning colours of Gigginstown Stud. Notebook continued the winning sequence adding the Grade 1 ERSG Arkle Novice Chase at Dublin Racing Festival. The Grade 2 Knight Frank Juvenile Hurdle is also on the card and has a rich history in producing the best juvenile hurdlers in Ireland and England during the season. The role of honour in this 2-mile hurdle is very impressive including previous winners, Aspire Tower, Espoir D’Allen, Bapaume and Apples Jade. Aspire Tower put on an exceptional display for Rachael Blackmore and Henry De Bromhead. The 2019 Hurdle winner, Aspire Tower went on to finish 2nd in the Triumph Hurdle at The Cheltenham Festival. TODAY’S BIG RACES FESTIVAL 2020
1.05PM: The Knight Frank Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 2) Considering Gordon Elliott’s fine overall record with juvenile hurdlers it may come as a surprise that the stable has not captured this important Grade 2 contest since 2011. This season Elliott has assembled a strong team in this age-group, and he has opted to go with ZANAHIYR, a maiden winner on the Flat last summer for Michael Halford and his breeder the Aga Khan. The Nathaniel gelding, a recruit to the colours of the increasingly influential Noel and Valerie Moran, made a smooth transition to hurdling at Ballinrobe in October and followed up with an impressive 14l defeat of the Willie Mullins-trained favourite Saint Sam in a Grade 3 event at Fairyhouse at the end of November. Saint Sam opposes now. He has a lot to find with ZANAHIYR, but is 7lbs better off this time. Mullins won three of the four editions of this race between 2012 and 2016 including with Apple’s Jade, later a star in the senior ranks for Elliott. His French imports always command respect and Ha D’Or is potentially interesting having won his only start on the Flat in France. Joseph O’Brien’s Busselton has a similar profile as a once-raced winner, except that he has the benefit of previous jumping experience. The Mastercraftsman gelding handled very soft ground on his hurdling debut at Auteuil in May.

2.15PM: The Racing Post Novice Steeplechase (Grade 1) The brilliant Envoi Allen sits out the Christmas period, but his trainer Gordon Elliott is not short of an able deputy for the unbeaten winner of the Drinmore Chase at Fairyhouse. Former Grade 1 novice hurdle winner Felix Desjy has adapted well to chasing. Having won as he liked at Killarney at the first attempt, he coped well with a much more meaningful challenge when defeating a field that included last season’s Champion Hurdle third Darver Star in a Grade 2 contest at Punchestown last month. The Gavin Cromwell-trained Darver Star, a strong favourite for that race following a comfortable success at the same venue the previous month, remains of significant interest despite a possible preference for a longer trip. Willie Mullins has won the Racing Post Novice Chase five times since 2011, including with the outstanding Douvan in 2015. The stable has another strong crop of novices this season. Blackbow, a former dual course bumper winner, is an interesting runner for Mullins. He failed to win a race over hurdles, so it was reassuring when he made all to beat the odds-on favourite Entoucas at Navan on his chasing debut. Stablemate Franco De Port has less racing done, but made a fine impression when winning over 2m 2f at Thurles on his chasing bow. He might just need further to be seen at his best. Last season’s County Hurdle third Embittered has had to settle for second behind an Elliotttrained favourite on his first two starts over fences. He could go well for Joseph O’Brien, who won this race with Le Richebourg in 2018. Benruben might just struggle in this company.

HORSE WELFARE – A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.
