DAY 1

12TH SEPTEMBER 2020 LEOPARDSTOWN RACECOURSE

WHERE THE BEST IN THE WORLD MEET

FEATURING

THE IRISH CHAMPION STAKES (GROUP 1)

THE COOLMORE AMERICA ‘JUSTIFY’ MATRON STAKES (GROUP 1)

WELCOME TO DAY 1 OF LONGINES IRISH CHAMPIONS WEEKEND I extend a warm welcome to everyone watching in for what promises to be two great days of racing at Leopardstown and the Curragh on Longines Irish Champions Weekend. While the very best of racing will take place at these renowned venues, a vital ingredient will be missing, one that makes a day’s racing in Ireland such a special occasion. The absence of owners, racecourse members, sponsors and racegoers alike has been keenly felt since racing resumed after a 10-week break in early June. This is particularly the case on big and important racing occasions such as Longines Irish Champions Weekend. It is truly disheartening that we will be running six Group 1 races, including the final Classic of the season, in front of empty stands this weekend. However that is what we must do in the current circumstances and many other sectors are suffering just as much, if not more. Since June 8th, every race meeting in Ireland has been run behind-closeddoors, meaning that only those working at a fixture may attend. We have implemented detailed safety procedures which have been well adhered to by trainers, riders, officials and stable staff. It is important that those in attendance at Irish race meetings keep following the protocols in place as they are the basis on which we are permitted to race. When the time is right and restrictions on gatherings of people at an outdoor event begin to ease, owners will be our first priority for a return to the racecourse. It will mean so much to get owners back to the racecourse to watch their horses compete. We are conscious too of a great number of people within our industry that have lost work over the past months in particular bookmakers, Tote staff, caterers and a multitude of other racecourse service providers. I look forward to the day that each and every one of you are back on the racecourse, contributing once again to an industry that we can be proud of. Finally, I would just like to sympathise with all families who have lost loved ones in this awful Pandemic and salute the medical staff and frontline workers who have worked selflessly and heroically so that the rest of the population may be safe and well. Míle Buíochas.

Welcome to Leopardstown for Day One of the 7th running of Longines

Irish Champions Weekend. Due to these unprecedented times, we are very sorry we cannot welcome our many supporters in person to Leopardstown Racecourse. However, there are so many ways you can #BeInvolved at Longines Irish Champions Weekend from the comfort of your own home, so please do look at our website and social channels for more detail. The quality of racing throughout the whole weekend at Leopardstown and The Curragh is outstanding, and the meeting deserves its positioning as “Where the Best in the World Meet”. We are very grateful to Longines for their continued support. The Group 1 feature race today is the Irish Champion Stakes, which has an illustrious history featuring some the best racehorses in the world. Last year we saw a terrific filly Magical prevail in a fantastic finish up the Leopardstown home straight. Magical is back at Leopardstown today in attempt to win back to back Irish Champion Stakes, to try to repeat history like the outstanding six-time Group 1 winner, Dylan Thomas, who created similar history with back to back in 2006 and 2007. I would like to extend a warm welcome and thank you to our other Group 1 feature race sponsor today, Coolmore America, who are generously sponsoring The Coolmore America ‘Justify’ Matron Stakes. The Coolmore America “Justify” Matron Stakes was ranked as the ‘World’s Best Fillies and Mares Race’ in the European and World Horse Thoroughbred Rankings in 2017 and 2018, and last year we saw the tremendous filly Iridessa win this race. The daughter of Ruler Of The World, Iridessa made history as she was the 2019 sole winner for Europe winning The Breeders Cup, Filly and Mares Turf Race at Santa Anita. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our remaining valued race sponsors, Clipper Logistics, KPMG, Ballylinch Stud, and The Irish Stallion Farms EBF. Without the support of our partners Longines Irish Champions Weekend would not be one of the leading global race meetings. This weekend is the epitome of Irish horseracing and we would like to warmly welcome and thank all the owners, trainers, and jockeys for their continued support. Whilst we are very sorry we cannot be with each other enjoying the races, we hope you do create your own excitement wherever you are whilst watching, and I look forward to welcoming you back to Leopardstown very soon and thank you for your ongoing support. I hope you enjoy a great weekend of top-class racing and I look forward to day two of Longines Irish Champions Weekend at the Curragh Racecourse tomorrow. RACE VERDICT

Aidan O’Brien has made no secret of the fact he hasn’t enjoyed the best of seasons with his two-year-olds, many of them showing early promise before failing to quite build on that as hoped when turning out quickly for Royal Ascot and other major meetings. His MORE BEAUTIFUL was given time to develop after two underwhelming efforts and now she can reap the benefit of that time, ready to return to the sort of promise she showed when winning on debut. Earth Strike could be a player if any rain arrives, while No Speak Alexander must be considered. [Mark Boylan] Source: Racing Post

The first of our valuable Premier Handicaps is the Irish Stallion Farms EBF “Petingo” Handicap run over 1 mile and 4 furlongs and is worth €125,000.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER: KASTASA

This extremely competitive race always gives a terrific finish due to the maximum field size, and has been won by leading jumps trainers Dermot Weld and Willie Mullins in the past three runnings of the event. Kastasa stayed on strongly to defeat the Mullins trained Buildmeupbuttercup by a neck in a thrilling finish. Kastasa followed up her victory with a seven length victory in the Group 3 Loughbrown Stakes on her run last year. Kastasa is owned by His Highness Aga Khan.

RACE VERDICT

It was an impressive performance from SPRINGBANK when bolting up at Gowran Park last month and while the handicapper has had his say, he looks capable of further progress on just his eighth career start. A case can be made for plenty of these including Emperor Of The Sun who has been holding his own at Listed level since a narrow defeat at Galway and Never Do Nothing who looks fairly treated on his British form. COOLMORE AM MATRON

jockeys p CHRIS HAYES The Limerick native established himself firmly on the big-race scene by winning the Matron Stakes in 2013 on La Collina for his boss Kevin Prendergast. He went on to win the Irish St Leger just a week later aboard Voleuse De Coeurs for Dermot Weld. Hayes joined Kevin Prendergast as a teenager in 2004 and was champion apprentice in each of the next three years. He has been associated with the legendary handler ever since. The pair shared a memorable Classic success in 2016 with Awtaad in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, and went agonisingly close to a careerdefining moment when Madhmoon was beaten half a length by Anthony Van Dyck in last year’s Derby at Epsom.

BILLY LEE A native of Castletown in County Limerick, Billy Lee celebrated his first victory in a Group 1 on this very card in 2014 when he weaved his way through to win the Matron Stakes on the Willie McCreery-trained Fiesolana. In recent years, Lee has forged a fantastic partnership with the Ken Condon-trained Romanised and their finest hour arrived at Deauville last year when he won the Prix Jacques le Marois.

SHANE FOLEY Kilkenny native Shane ‘Dusty’ Foley secured his first Classic winner aboard the Adrian Keatley-trained Jet Setting when she edged out Minding in the Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh in 2016. Foley currently leads the Irish Flat Jockeys’ Championship and is enjoying his best ever season thanks in no small part to his association with Jessica Harrington. The pair teamed up to land the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes earlier this season with the lightning quick Lucky Vega. That was his fifth success at the top level.

COLIN KEANE Since riding his first winner aboard No Trimmings in December 2010, Colin Keane has rapidly emerged as one of the leading lights of the Irish weighing room. A son of trainer Gerry Keane, Colin was champion apprentice in 2014 and has been associated with Ger Lyons for the majority of his career thus far. In the same year that he was crowned champion apprentice, Colin was appointed as Lyons’s stable jockey. He was crowned Ireland’s champion jockey in 2017 after a thrilling tussle with Pat Smullen. Keane and Lyons teamed up to win this year’s Irish 2,000 Guineas with Siskin.

RYAN MOORE Ballydoyle’s retained rider is a former three-time British champion, having won the title in 2006, 2008 and 2009. A son of trainer Gary Moore, he started out with Richard Hannon before joining Sir Michael Stoute and has ridden 13 Classic winners in Britain, including the Derby twice, eight Classic winners in Ireland, as well as countless major international victories. His two Irish Champion Stakes wins came in 2014 on The Grey Gatsby, dramatically edging out the O’Brien-trained Australia in a thrilling finish, and last year on the superstar mare Magical.

MERICA ‘JUSTIFY’ N STAKES

profiles CIEREN FALLON Son of the legendary Kieren Fallon, Cieren has wasted little time in making a name for himself. He won his first big terrestrial televised event when Time To Study landed the Old Borough Cup in September of last year, but it was his first Group 1 victory on Oxted in the July Cup at Newmarket this summer that made everybody take notice of just how good he is. He is now second jockey to Qatar Racing, behind champion Oisin Murphy, and is making the most of his opportunities.

MICHAEL HUSSEY Michael Hussey has been a big part of the Ballydoyle operation for most of the last decade. His first stakes success came aboard Craftsman in the 2013 Killavullan Stakes. He won the Listed King George V Cup on The Major General in 2016 and two years later teamed up with Sir Erec to land the Listed Martin Molony Stakes at Limerick. Hussey won his second Killavullan Stakes on Coral Beach in 2018.

DECLAN MCDONOGH Declan McDonogh was champion jockey in Ireland in 2006 and was stable jockey for Kevin Prendergast and John Oxx before moving to Joseph O’Brien. Declan is a son of Des, who trained the legendary Monksfield to win the Champion Hurdle in 1978 and 1979. Declan has won the Pretty Polly Stakes twice on Polaire (1999) and Rebelline (2001). He also won the Tattersalls Gold Cup on Rebelline in 2002 and was successful in the National Stakes in 2009 on Kingsfort. His strong CV boasts a triumph in the 2013 Prix de l’Abbaye on Arc day aboard Maarek.

SEAMIE HEFFERNAN Seamie Heffernan has been associated with Aidan O’Brien since 1996 after serving his apprenticeship with Jim Bolger. His time at Ballydoyle has seen him build an international reputation. All but a few of his major victories have been achieved with O’Brien, often on supposed “second-string” material, including a career highlight on Anthony Van Dyck in the Derby at Epsom in June of last year. He has won nine Irish Classics, including the Irish Derby on four occasions. This year he guided Santiago to glory in the race. He was previously successful in consecutive editions of the Irish Champion Stakes, winning on Cape Blanco in 2010 and on So You Think in 2011.

WAYNE LORDAN The 2010 Nunthorpe Stakes was the scene of Wayne Lordan’s first Group 1 win in the saddle when he guided 100-1 shot Sole Power home in front for Eddie Lynam and the Power family. Lordan received many plaudits for his efforts aboard another brilliantly-trained Lynam sprinter, Slade Power, who won the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot and the July Cup in 2014. He also played an integral role in the career of Legatissimo, trained by his former boss David Wachman, by guiding that filly to victories in the Nassau Stakes and the Matron Stakes in 2015. After Wachman retired, Lordan moved to Ballydoyle, and made an immediate impact when he secured a first Classic aboard Winter in the 2017 1,000 Guineas. Last year, he plundered a breakthrough Breeders’ Cup triumph at Santa Anita on Joseph O’Brien’s Iridessa.

WILLIAM BUICK William Buick shared the champion apprentice title in Britain in 2008 with David Probert and won the Lester Award for Apprentice Jockey of the Year in 2007 and 2008. From 2010 to 2014 he was stable jockey to John Gosden and won the Irish Champion Stakes on brilliant talent The Fugue in 2013. In 2015 he became retained by Godolphin. Buick won his first Group 1 race in Canada in 2010 and since then has won top level races in England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Dubai and America. He has won three Classics: the St Leger in 2010 and 2011 and the Derby in 2018.

COOLMORE AM MATRON STA LADY WANNABE Likeable filly produced a career-best effort when winning the Listed Ruby Stakes at Killarney last summer but hasn’t been at that level in three runs this season, most recently when well beaten in a Curragh Group 3 over 1m1f. Chris Hayes

WILDS DREAMS Joseph O’Brien-trained four-year-old was unbeaten in her last four starts in her native Argentina, including at Group 3 level. Hard to know what that form equates to in terms of this assignment but fascinating runner on her European/stable debut. Billy Lee

ALBIGNA

Shane Foley

Top-class juvenile won the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac last year. However, she has been a bit underwhelming this season, disappointing when a well-backed 6-5 favourite in the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas behind Peaceful, Fancy Blue, So Wonderful and New York Girl, when the quick ground was put forward as an excuse. Second in a Curragh Group 3 last month on her first run since and may well have needed it, but questions to answer now.

CHAMPERS ELYSEES A decent filly as a two-year-old, but she has shown dramatic improvement this season, winning a Curragh handicap off a rating of 86 followed by a seven-length demolition job in the Corrib Fillies Stakes at Galway. Comes into this off the back of a career-best when landing the rearranged Group 3 Coolmore Fairy Bridge Stakes at Gowran Park. However, she may need Colin Keane more rain to have any realistic chance. FANCY BLUE Ran on well for second behind Peaceful in the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas on her seasonal return but turned that form around in the Group 1 Prix de Diane at Chantilly when getting the better of the Curragh heroine and Coronation Stakes scorer Alpine Star. Game filly was a hard-fought winner of the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood when last seen and sets a very Ryan Moore good standard. KNOW IT ALL Progressive filly produced a career-best when winning a Group 3 over this course and distance in July and has since been beaten less than a length into third when tackling Group 1 company for the first time in the Prix Rothschild at Deauville. Hails from a stable enjoying a tremendous season and this three-year-old has strong place claims. Cieren Fallon

MERICA ‘JUSTIFY’ AKES PREVIEW LOVE LOCKET Accounted for Know It All when winning a Group 3 over the course and distance on her seasonal debut but has since been outclassed in a Group 1 and a Group 2 contest at Ascot and the Curragh since. Michael Hussey

NEW YORK GIRL Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas fourth thought highly enough of to be supplemented for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby but possibly didn’t get the trip when making no impact from the rear on that occasion. Joseph O’Brien-trained three-year-old well beaten in the Juddmonte Irish Oaks since and drops back to 1m here. Declan McDonogh

PEACEFUL

Made a winning reappearance in the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas, with Fancy Blue two lengths behind at the winning line. However, talented filly ended up just a neck behind that rival when third in the Prix de Diane at Chantilly in July. Should not be much between the two again and is undoubtedly a classy operator. Seamie Heffernan

SO WONDERFUL Third to Love in the Moyglare Stud Stakes on this weekend last year and filled the same position on her seasonal return in the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas. Landed her maiden at the 15th attempt and followed up in a heavy-ground Listed contest at Killarney last month. Rates a place contender. Wayne Lordan

VALERIA MESSALINA Well-beaten in the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas on her seasonal return before appreciating the drop in grade when landing a Group 3 at Cork in good style. Went down fighting when collared in the dying strides by dual Prix de la Foret heroine One Master in a Group 3 at Goodwood since. Stable appears to have better claims with Albigna. William Buick

RACE VERDICT

A good renewal of this race with proven Group 1 performers taking on some progressive sorts. Fancy Blue and PEACEFUL are closely matched on form and it’s the latter who shades the vote with the likelihood that she will be better suited by a return to one mile. She showed plenty of speed in her Classic success earlier in the campaign and looked a little unlucky not to reel in Fancy Blue in the Prix de Diane when she was last seen. Fancy Blue has since gone on to win the Nassau and warrants respect in her bid for a third Group 1 but she looked ideally suited by further than this at Goodwood. RACE VERDICT

This should be very informative with an eye to the future. Cadillac is the standout on form but FERNANDO VICHI is a hugely promising sort who should have more to come and he can build on an excellent maiden win at this venue last time. Liffey River is similarly unexposed and rates a major danger after his ready Punchestown success, while Van Gogh will relish the better ground than last time and hails from a stable with an outstanding record in this. IRISH CHAMP

jockeys p WILLIAM BUICK William Buick shared the champion apprentice title in Britain in 2008 with David Probert and won the Lester Award for Apprentice Jockey of the Year in 2007 and 2008.

PION STAKES

profiles COLIN KEANE Since riding his first winner aboard No Trimmings in December 2010, Colin Keane has rapidly emerged as one of the leading lights of the Irish weighing room.

IRISH CHAMPION GHAIYYATH

William Buick

Phenomenal talent arrives here seeking a fourth consecutive Group 1 success, having earned the title of the world’s highest-rated horse after his latest win in the Juddmonte International at York. Five-year-old has very few miles on the clock for his age and trainer believes he is currently at the peak of his career. Likely to relish this track and trip but may not have an uncontested lead, which could count against him.

JAPAN

Ryan Moore

Twice a Group 1 winner last season, including against his elders in a thrilling Juddmonte International Stakes at York, but hasn’t managed to get his head in front in three starts this year. Slow start didn’t help his cause when race wasn’t run to suit at Royal Ascot before a satisfactory third in the Coral-Eclipse behind Ghaiyyath. Reportedly had sore feet after disappointing King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes run behind Enable. Capable of fighting out the finish if at his best.

LEO DE FURY

Shane Foley

Started his season with a bang, giving the impression he could be better than ever as a fouryear-old when landing the Group 2 Coolmore Irish EBF Mooresbridge Stakes. However, Jessica Harrington-trained performer was well held in the Tattersalls Gold Cup and Irish Field Royal Whip Stakes in two starts since and this will require a career-best effort.

N STAKES PREVIEW SOTTSASS

Colin Keane

French raider proved his class last season with a Qipco Prix du Jockey Club triumph over Persian King, before finishing an excellent third in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe behind Waldgeist and Enable. Claimed the Prix Ganay in June before proving a shade ring-rusty when beaten a neck on return from a break at Deauville on heavy ground last month. Major contender for trainer who won this race in 2016 with the brilliant Almanzor.

MAGICAL

Seamie Heffernan

Wonderful six-time Group 1-winning mare landed this race last year and was due to be retired at the end of that campaign but connections opted to keep her in training after she developed physically over the winter. Gave the impression she could be better than ever when winning the Alwasmiyah Pretty Polly Stakes on her return, followed up by a second victory in the Tattersalls Gold Cup, but five-year-old was no match for Ghaiyyath in the Juddmonte International. Has three lengths to find with that rival and needs to make home advantage count.

ARMORY

Wayne Lordan

Classy Group 2-winning two-year-old was second to Pinatubo in the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes on this weekend last year. Ran creditably when fourth to Siskin in the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas on seasonal return before missing Investec Derby after not passing all necessary tests on declaration day. Failed to really land a blow behind Magical in the Tattersalls Gold Cup but much better when getting up late to win the Irish Field Royal Whip Stakes last month. This represents a big step up in class.

The Irish Champion Stakes (Group 1) RACE DESCRIPTION

The Irish Champion Stakes is a restricted race for three year olds an upwards. It is run over 1 mile 2 furlongs and is worth a staggering €750,000 – The most valuable race on Longines Irish Champions Weekend card.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER: Magical The previous winners of the Irish Champion Stakes include legends of the turf such as Giant’s Causeway, Fantastic Light, Dylan Thomas who won it on two occasions and the brilliant Sea the Stars. Roaring Lion got the better of a final furlong dual with old rival Saxon Warrior in 2018. More recently Magical, Snow Fairy and The Fugue showed that the girls are equal - if not on occasion superior to the boys!

RACE VERDICT

A fascinating affair in which tactics can play a major role. The brilliant Ghaiyyath obviously likes to bowl along in front but the presence of Armory, who has raced handily enough in the past, could mean the 130-rated standardsetter may not have it all his own way in front. Magical loves this place and can finish closer to Charlie Appleby’s star this time around, but it could be worth taking a chance on JAPAN, who has always been held in the highest regard and appears the Ballydoyle number one. He ran no sort of race last time at Ascot but had an excuse and he will surely be primed to the minute for this. [Mark Boylan] Source: Racing Post

RACE VERDICT

It was a clear career best performance from LANCASTER HOUSE when chasing home Romanised in the Group 2 Minstrel Stakes last time out and the colt is lightly raced for a fouryear-old. With the return to one mile expected to yield improvement, Aidan O’Brien’s firststring is taken to make it five wins from seven career starts. Stablemate Royal Dornoch could be the main danger after his return to form over course and distance last time and he should get a strong pace to aim at while Safe Voyage is another to consider, particularly if the rain arrives. RACE VERDICT

Loads of depth to this Group 3. Joseph O’Brien has a strong team here and his BUCKHURST, who doesn’t always quite get the credit he deserves, can get back to winning ways now tried in first-time blinkers, albeit a wide draw isn’t ideal. Tiger Moth is clearly a high-class individual and warrants major respect, while Patrick Sarsfield has been a real success story this summer and shouldn’t be far away. The three named runners all arrive here on the back of mini breaks and the race-fit Up Helly Aa can give them plenty to think about after a very satisfactory comeback at Killarney. RACE VERDICT

The lightly raced MUSIC TO MY EARS had plenty go against her when only narrowly denied at the Curragh in July and that form has been done a favour by the winner going close in Group company subsequently. It’s a typically wide-open renewal of this race and Sirjack Thomas is an obvious threat with the 7lb claim of his talented apprentice rider an obvious asset. [Phill Anderson] Source: Racing Post
