I would like to extend a warm welcome and thank you to our other Group 1 feature race sponsor today, Coolmore, who are generously sponsoring The Coolmore America ‘Justify’ Matron Stakes. The Coolmore America “Justify” Matron Stakes was ranked as the ‘World’s Best Fillies and Mares Race’ in the European and World Horse Thoroughbred Rankings in 2017 and 2018, and last year gave trainer Johnny Murtagh his first Group 1 Winner as Champers Elysees won the race in terrific style under Colin Keane.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our valued race sponsors, Clipper Logistics, KPMG, Ballylinch Stud, Paddy Power and The Irish Stallion Farms EBF who make a very valuable contribution, not only to the prize fund, but also to the atmosphere on the day. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our sponsors, without the support of our sponsors and partners Longines Irish Champions Weekend would not be one of the leading global race meetings.

We are privileged that today’s raceday has been selected as one of twenty-two World Pool days worldwide. World Pool was created by the Hong Kong Jockey Club and brings together racing fans from over 20 nations so everyone is effectively betting into one pool creation huge liquidity. World Pool helps shine a global spotlight on Leopardstown today and is very important for Irish Champions Weekend.

The tragic passing of young Jack DeBromhead has been in the uppermost thoughts of not only the whole world of horse racing but Ireland in general. Our thoughts today are with his Father and Mother Henry & Heather and siblings Mia and Georgia and his wider circle of family and friends.

The Paddy Power Winning Line will commence at 11.30am l ive from the winning presentation podium. This carefully selected panel of special guests including Sam Kirwin and Kevin O’Ryan will take racegoers through the eight race card hopefully suggest winners for the day!

for everyone here today. We have a dedicated Family Fun zone with plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained. Our Charity partners Festina Lente are here with their Shetland Ponies, we have a Petting Zoo, Face painters, bouncy castle, and an indoor soft play area, outdoor playground, and HRI Juniors educational activities.

The Group 1 feature race today is the Irish Champion Stakes, which has an illustrious history featuring some the best racehorses in the world. Last year we saw Magical prevail in a fantastic finish to win back-to-back Irish Champion Stakes. She repeated history similar to the outstanding six-time Group 1 winner, Dylan Thomas, who created comparable history in 2006 and 2007. This race always attracts significant International attention, won by legends of the turf such as Sea The Stars, Golden Horn and Almanzor.

Style is at the heart of Longines Irish Champions Weekend. To celebrate the best of Irish talent, Longines Irish Champions Weekend will host the Young Designer Award for a second year and have encouraged all young fashion designers to get involved to showcase their work. Aspiring young Irish designers were asked to submit a design. Well done to all involved and we look forward to seeing some fabulous designs on show today with the winner announced tomorrow.

There is an array of great supporting entertainment lined up. On arrival Uke Box Music, a Dublin based Ukulele band, will greet our patrons at the main turnstile entrance. Immediately after the last race we will have a sing along in the parade ring followed by entertainment from Cork born Lyra. Lyra’s performance is supported by our Official Entertainment Partner Bulmers. This rising artist will be performing after racing on the Bulmers Secret Orchard stage in the Champions

Throughout the weekend there is an incredible prizemoney of over €4 million on offer. This could not have been made possible without the support of our wonderful title sponsors Longines, and our race sponsors - Bahrain Turf Club, Coolmore Stud, KPMG, Clipper Logistics, Ballylinch Stud, Paddy Power and the Irish EBF.

A typically competitive renewal but ANDREAS VESALIUS was a big eyecatcher at Gowran when denied a clear run last time out and he’s come in for some lenient treatment from the assessor. Spanish Tenor should appreciate a return to softer ground and Current Option is still feasibly treated after his premier handicap success at Galway last time. The unexposed three-year-old Markaz Paname is probably the main danger to the selection after his Group success last time out. [Phill Anderson] Source: Racing

A case can be made for all of these. Point King looks like horse going progressing up the ranks and if he can get an uncontested lead, he could be hard to peg back. Earl Of Tyrone is another to consider after a huge run in the Ebor last time and his stablemate Beamish isn’t out of it either. It might be worth taking a chance on DUKE DE SESSA at a likely each-way sort of price. He’s not progressed as expected so far this term but the yard are really hitting form now and he’s been giving the impression this could be his trip. Last year’s runner-up, Thunder Kiss, is another to consider in a wide-open heat. [Phill Anderson]

VADENI - CHRISTOPHE SOUMILLON

Ballydoyle’s retained rider is a former three-time British champion, having won the title in 2006, 2008 and 2009. A son of trainer Gary Moore, he started out with Richard Hannon before joining Sir Michael Stoute. He rode the most recent of his 14 British-trained Classic winners on Tuesday in this year’s Oaks. He has ridden nine Classic winners in Ireland, and is widely recognised as one of the leading Flat riders in international racing. He has won the Irish Champion Stakes on three occasions, first on The Grey Gatsby, dramatically edging out the O’Brien-trained Australia in a thrilling finish in 2014. He took the race in 2019 on the mare Magical and steered the brilliant St Mark’s Basilica to victory 12 months ago.

Compiled by

Seamie Heffernan has been associated with Aidan O’Brien since 1996 after serving his apprenticeship with Jim Bolger. All but a few of his major victories have been achieved for O’Brien, often on supposed “second-string” material, including on Anthony Van Dyck in the Derby at Epsom in 2019. He has won 11 Irish Classics, including the Irish Derby on four occasions and the Irish 1,000 Guineas five times. He won consecutive editions of the Irish Champion Stakes, on Cape Blanco in 2010 and So You Think in 2011, and captured the race for the third time on Magical two years ago. In 2016 he partnered Highland Reel to finish second to stablemate Found in the Arc and retained the ride to triumph at the Breeders’ Cup.

ALENQUER - TOM MARQUAND

BROOME - WAYNE LORDAN

One of the leading riders in France since the turn of the century, Stephane Pasquier has won virtually all of the country’s major races including the Prix de Arc de Triomphe on Rail Link for Andre Fabre in 2006 and the Prix du Jockey Club on Study Of Man for Pascal Bary and the Niarchos family in 2018. This year he landed the Grand Prix de Paris for the third time, aboard Onesto in the Niarchos colours. In Britain, he enjoyed Royal Ascot success with Manduro in 2006 and won the 2009 Cheveley Park and 2010 1,000 Guineas on Special Duty, on whom he also won the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches. He was successful at the 2014 Breeders’ Cup meeting on Karakontie in the Mile.

Wayne Lordan recorded his first Group 1 win on 100-1 shot Sole Power for Edward Lynam in 2010. Four years later he combined with another Lynam-trained sprinter Slade Power to capture the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot and the July Cup. In 2015 he rode Legatissimo, trained by David Wachman, to victory in the Nassau Stakes and the Matron Stakes. After Wachman’s retirement, Lordan joined the team at Ballydoyle, and made an immediate impact in 2017, securing a first Classic aboard Winter in the 1,000 Guineas and landing the Matron Stakes on Hydrangea. The following year he won on Joseph O’Brien’s Iridessa at the Breeders’ Cup meeting at Santa Anita.

A son of trainer Gerry Keane, Colin was champion apprentice in 2014 and has been associated with Ger Lyons ever since. He was crowned Ireland’s champion jockey for the first time in 2017 after a thrilling duel with Pat Smullen. Keane and Lyons shared Classic success for the first time with Siskin in the 2020 Irish 2,000 Guineas and soon added another, thanks to Even So in the Irish Oaks. In the same year, he rode Champers Elysees to win the Matron Stakes, regained the championship and achieved a major international triumph on Tarnawa for Dermot Weld in the Breeders’ Cup Turf. He retained the title in 2021 and is going head-to-head with Billy Lee in a duel for this year’s championship. In June he won the Irish Derby on the Ralph Beckett-trained Westover.

Belgian-born Christophe Soumillon, one of the most successful international riders in racing history, has been champion jockey in France on ten occasions, gaining his first title in 2003 and his most recent in 2018. His talent blossomed early, and he had only just turned 20 when riding Anabaa to win the Prix du Jockey Club in 2001. He has won France’s premier Classic four times, and ridden 16 French Classic winners in all. Other highlights of a distinguished career include Arc victories on Dalakhani (2003) and Zarkava (2008), a Breeders’ Cup win on Shirocco in 2005, the King George on Hurricane Run in 2006, back-to-back-wins in the Dubai World Cup on Thunder Snow in 2017 and 2018, and a French Champion Hurdle on Mandali. He won the Irish Champion Stakes on Almanzor in 2016.

MISHRIFF - COLIN KEANE

LUXEMBOURG - RYAN MOORE Alan Sweetman

Tom Marquand, who grew up near Cheltenham, was champion apprentice in Britain in 2015 and has developed into one of the country’s leading riders, breaking the century mark in each of the past five seasons and partnering a careerbest 176 winners in 2021. He made a breakthrough at Classic level on the Joseph O’Brien-trained Galileo Chrome in the 2020 St Leger, picking up the ride after Shane Crosse was ruled out by a positive Covid test. He has ridden with much success in Australia and recorded a first win in Ireland on Alenquer in this year’s Tattersalls Gold Cup.

ONESTO - STEPHANE PASQUIER

A Group 1 winner in Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh in May. He won last year’s King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, but 2021 seasonal-best came in defeat when a six-length second to Mishriff in the Juddmonte International. Handles heavy ground and probably found the going too quick when fading to finish last of six behind Vadeni in the Eclipse on his latest start. A big task to reverse form.

LUXEMBOURGMISHRIFFBROOME

Failed to win at two but ended the season with a fine second behind El Bodegon in a 1m2f Group 1 at Saint-Cloud. Started the campaign brightly with a Navan maiden win and a wide-margin Group 3 triumph over C&D but the track and trip did not seem to suit when sixth in the Derby. More recently looked a bit short of tactical speed in Grade 1 appearances at Belmont and Saratoga.

Apart from successive editions of the Tattersalls Gold Cup, he has been campaigned exclusively abroad and over 1m4f since a 1m2f Group 2 win at the Curragh early last season. Highlights provided by Group 1 win at Saint-Cloud in 2021 and Group 2 success in this year’s Hardwicke Stakes. Had to come from off the pace when fourth in a recent Grade 1 at Saratoga.

Impressive winner of the Prix du Jockey Club, striding clear on soft ground for a five-length success, though it’s possible that was a sub-standard edition. Perhaps fortunate to beat Mishriff in the Eclipse, but stuck to his task gamely. Now bidding to emulate St Mark’s Basilica, who completed the Jockey Club/Eclipse/Irish Champion treble last year. The ground is not a problem, and he holds a major chance.

Won the Prix du Jockey Club in 2020 and landed the 2021 Dubai Sheema Classic, and also impressed in trouncing Alenquer in last year’s Juddmonte International. He looked unlucky not to peg back Vadeni in the Eclipse at Sandown in July after meeting trouble in running and also lost ground at the start in the King George. Clear-second-best behind the brilliant Baaeed at York.

Top-class juvenile last year. Won the Group 2 Beresford Stakes and the Group 1 Vertem Futurity. Stumbled in the early stages of the 2,000 Guineas but did no great damage to his reputation by taking third place. Then missed the Derby on account of a muscular problem. He was merely workmanlike when winning Group 3 Royal Whip at the Curragh four weeks ago but should be a lot sharper now.

Strong at the finish when winning a Group 2 over a bit further than this at Saint-Cloud in May and very much shaped as though in need of a step up in trip when keeping on late for fifth behind Vadeni in the Prix du Jockey Club. Duly won the 1m4f Grand Prix de Paris on his next start, and it’s hard to see him turning the tables on Vadeni over this trip.

• General oversight of horse care and wellbeing.

The presentation of the horses on race day reflects the preparation at home. The results of good feeding, good housing, good health, and good wellbeing are clear to see when a horse appears at the races bright-eyed with a gleaming coat and a spring in their step. Raceday is great opportunity for the public to observe the high standards of care given to these horses.

At every race meeting a team of equine veterinary surgeons supervise the wellbeing of horses. All racecourse vets must be members of the Association of Irish Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons (AIRVS) and will have received specialist training in the field of racecourse work.

All horses are accompanied on raceday by their own dedicated stable staff. These skilled people will have spent many months and sometimes years preparing their horses for the raceday. They lavish care and attention, day in, day out, in all weathers, and the industry is extremely proud of these excellent individuals. They help maintain Ireland’s position as an international leader in the thoroughbred breeding, training, and racing industry, ensuring best-in-class integrity and equine welfare standards.

• Provision of advice to the Stewards, on veterinary matters.

LIVE DJ AND DRINKS ‘TIL LATE! A SHORT WALK FROM LEOPARDSTOWN RACECOURSE OFFICIAL PUB PARTNER TO LEOPARDSTOWN RACECOURSE

• Horse Identification - achieved through checking their microchip numbers against those recorded in their passports.

• Drug Testing - a process is vital to ensure the integrity of the sport.

The IHRB Veterinary Officer at each meeting has responsibilities including:

A racecourse vet will check horses at the start for each race. If they deem any horse unfit to race at this point, they have the authority to withdraw the horse.

Horse Care on Raceday

During the race the vets follow on, within the convoy of vehicles seen on the service road. Other vehicles in this convoy include doctors, paramedics and ground-staff. This whole team will swing into action if any incident occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse or jockey receiving treatment. This allows the veterinary or medical teams some privacy to fully assess the casualty. Racegoers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured participant.

The Blue Cross Horse Ambulance are also present every meeting, the service is operated by skilled personnel using specially equipped horse ambulances. They work to support the Veterinary Team. They respond swiftly to any incidents involving injured horses and transport them off the racetrack for specialist veterinary care if required.

The wellbeing of horses is integral to the thoroughbred racehorse industry. Racecourses play their part through adherence to a clear set of industry standards. Prior to each race meeting an independent track inspection is carried out by an IHRB accredited “Clerk of the Course”. This individual will check all equine facilities, including ground conditions, railing, stables and veterinary care facilities. All racecourses must meet the required standards to be granted a licence to race.

Simon and Ed Crisford’s yard are flying in recent weeks and it’s hard to oppose their raider, JADOOMI, who posted a career best Group 2 success at Goodwood last time. Boundless Ocean could be a threat if he gets another uncontested lead after his Group 3 win here last time out and Just Beautiful is an intriguing runner on debut for her new yard. year’s Sun Chariot winner, beating the Irish-trained dual Group 1 winner Mother Earth. Was a creditable fourth in a 1m1f Group 1 at Meydan in March and made a winning reappearance under a penalty in the Group 2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot. She enhanced her reputation with a fine victory in the Prix Rothschild last month and holds strong credentials.

was successful in soft-ground events at Ascot (handicap) and Pontefract (Listed) in 2021. Also won on goodto-firm. Effective back on good going in a Sandown Group 2 on reappearance, though had little to spare and had a smoother trip than the runner-up. Predictably found the company too hot in the Queen Anne Stakes that was won by the brilliant Baaeed.

Showed up well on sole start at two for Conor O’Dwyer. Won first two races for Henry de Bromhead, a 1m Gowran maiden and a 7f Fairyhouse conditions event. Already beaten when her saddle slipped in latter stages of a Fairyhouse event in July on first Pattern attempt.

Smart filly at two, winning a Group 2 before a narrow defeat in the Moyglare Stud Stakes. Has trained on satisfactorily, though was no match for Homeless Songs here in April or when fifth in the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Bounced back from a blip in the Belmont Oaks when making all in a Group 3 over an extended 7f at Tipperary just over a fortnight ago.

Six-time winner, including 1m Group 2 at the Curragh. Best performances have been in defeat, a neck second in this race 12 months ago and two-length second in the Prix de la Foret. Second to a smart colt over 7f at the Curragh in July. Made little impression when fifth behind Saffron Beach in last month’s Prix Rothschild at Deauville and cheekpieces on for the first time

CONCERTAGARTHAAFFOGATOSAFFRONGALOREBEACHHALL

Readily beat Agartha on debut in 7f maiden at this venue but was a shade disappointing in two Pattern races last autumn. Redeemed herself when beating Agartha in 7f Guineas Trial here in April. She gave a sparkling performance when trouncing Tuesday and Concert Hall in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and stable is now back in good form after an untypical quiet spell. Holds an excellent chance.

Last year’s Cheveley Park winner. Disappointed when favourite for the 1,000 Guineas and could manage only fourth in the Coronation Stakes. Got another Group 1 success on the board over 7f in the Prix Jean Prat, beating high-class colt Light Infantry. Sent back over 1m at the same venue last time and was beaten decisively by Saffron Beach.

This will be her sixth successive Group 1 attempt since an early-season Listed win at Navan. She was a six-length third behind Homeless Songs in the Irish 1,000 Guineas, then fourth in the Oaks, Pretty Polly and Belmont Oaks. Now has to bounce back from a lack-lustre performance in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood. Alan Sweetman

Closely matched with Agartha on their Group 3 form in May but soundly beaten in sixth behind that rival in a recent Tipperary clash. Managed a creditable sixth (beaten roughly seven lengths) in the Coronation Stakes before blotting her record with long odds-on defeat in a maiden at Dundalk.

A tricky puzzle to solve in the finale but it might be worth taking a chance on TIGER VOICE. He hasn’t won on the Flat since 2018 but he ran with credit at Roscommon last time and should relish a return to further. Yashin may be able to resume progress after a noshow at Royal Ascot last time and Baby Zeus is another for the shortlist after a big run in a premier handicap at the Galway festival.
