A BRIEF HISTORY OF BALLYLINCH STUD

From The Tetrarch to Lope de Vega Ballylinch Stud was founded over a century ago to stand the fastest racehorse ever seen - The Tetrarch (pictured). However, the origin of the site can be traced back almost 500 years, when the land was seized from Cistercian monks by the Crown forces of Henry VIII in 1541.

The Tetrarch and his son Tetratema became champion sires in 1919 and 1929 respectively, the only two grey stallions to achieve that distinction since the turn of the 20th century.

During the 1960s, Caro was conceived at the stud while Fortino was standing at Ballylinch and his vibrant male line can still be seen to great effect by Uncle Mo in the

USA. More recently King’s Theatre, one of the greatest jumps sires of the modern era, was crowned champion national hunt sire a total of five times.

Responsible for over 130 stakes horses including 12 Gr.1 winners on 4 continents, Lope de Vega continues to rise to the top of the international stallion ranks and he is currently heading the European sires table of 2021. Supported by Make Believe, presently the leading sire by worldwide progeny earnings, and young sire New Bay, whose progeny are excelling on the track, Ballylinch’s long tradition of success looks set to continue!
