The Andrew Morris Collection of Important

Worcester and other Porcelain

As our inaugural fine auction at our new Hawthorn saleroom, we are delighted to present The Andrew Morris Collection of Important Worcester and other Porcelain in two parts.

Andrew Morris, has dedicated the last thirty four years to carefully curating a porcelain collection with a specialized focus on Worcester factory porcelain produced between 1851-1900, namely Kerr and Binns period (1852-1862) and 19th century and early 20th century Worcester Royal porcelain company period (1862- 2009). The collection concentrates on a handful of celebrated Worcester artists, namely Thomas Bott Senior and his son Thomas John Bott, George Owen, Josiah Rushton and brothers Thomas Scott and James Callowhill.

A collection of this type is rare on the international market, as it features a handful of exhibition pieces created for the Great Exhibitions from 1851- 1937. The fairs were designed to showcase the best examples of arts and industry, providing each exhibitor an opportunity to unveil innovations and advancements with fierce competition between nations to excel and to achieve the prestigious awards and medals of the fair. Pieces made for the Great Exhibitions were of the highest quality, and in porcelain showcased important changes in glazing, design and decoration.

Within the Morris collection are several exhibition pieces decorated by Thomas Bott senior (1829-1870), who inspired by ‘Limoges enamel’ on copper developed the application and decoration of 'Limoges enamel' on porcelain, lots 30, 47 and 48 are examples of this stunning technique.

Lot 30, a Kerr and Binns polychrome enamel decorated chalice was exhibited at the London International Exhibition of Industry and Art, 1862, and is accompanied by an original rendering of the display with the chalice from the Art Journal Illustrated catalogue of the International Exhibition together with J. Waring’s Masterpieces of Industrial Art & Sculpture at the International Exhibition, 1862, a treasure for any discerning collector or institution.

A point of difference from his distinctive ‘Limoges Enamel’ work, Lot 13, from the renowned ‘Shakespeare’ Service, is jointly decorated by Thomas Bott Senior and Luke Wells, using Irish Clay and gold for the 1853 Dublin Great Industrial Exhibition, specifically to promote the Worcester porcelain factory to the Irish market. After opening the Dublin exhibition, Queen Victoria was so impressed by the service she requested a private inspection of it.

In addition to these rare exhibition pieces, The Morris collection also holds rare examples of works by other artists such as George Owen and Josiah Rushton.

Highlights from the auction include lot 4, a superb Persian pattern vase and cover by George Owen, intricately decorated with hand cut incisions and lot 40, a pair of large and impressive vases with covers, painted with classical scenes by Josiah Rushton.

We are honoured to be presenting this special collection to the public market.

The Golden Age of Worcester Porcelain

The Worcester porcelain factory has had many iterations during its long and rich evolution. Founded in 1751 by 15 shareholders, the company changed hands and respectively its trading name various times over the next century.

In 1852, Richard William Binns and William Henry Kerr take over management of what was then known as the Chamberlain & Co. porcelain works after a detrimental fire which required an extensive restoration and rebuild of the company in the 1850’s. With this rejuvenation of the company and machinery in tow, together with the Great Exhibitions flourishing worldwide showcasing technical and design innovation, this led to the perfect opportunity for Kerr & Binns (1852-1862) to showcase exciting new innovations to the world. This burst of creative innovation extended into the early period of the Worcester Royal porcelain company period (1862- 2009).

This innovation was encouraged and enabled by The Worcester Government school of design opening to allow apprentices to study a wide variety of subject matter including anatomy, botany, still life and ornamentation. Binns is credited with selecting talented apprentices from the school who transformed the decoration department, most notably James Hadley, James Callowhill, Josiah Rushton and George Owen.

Three extremely significant figures to emerge during this period from the factory are The Bott family and George Owen.

Thomas Bott (1829-1870) and his son Thomas John Bott (1859-1932) are recognised for their adept application of Limoges style enamelling onto porcelain. Inspired by Limoges enamels on copper, Thomas Bott (1829-1870) developed the application and decoration of Limoges type enamel on porcelain, exhibiting in both the Paris Exhibition Universelle of 1855 and the London exhibition of 1862. During the height of the Renaissance revival this 15th century enamel technique became very popular. Bott Senior worked at the factory from 1853 until his premature death in 1870, credited to his technique of licking his brush to form a fine point, exposing him to lead poisoning. Bott junior carrying on his fathers legacy working exclusively at the factory from 1873 until the middle 1880s, and thereafter working by contract for various factories. Father and son produced extremely fine scenes in enamel, an incredible accomplishment as the technique regarding patience and precision. 'Limoges Enamel' is a complicated process, not dissimilar to pâte-sur-pâte where the enamel is applied slowly in stages, application over application, layer by layer resulting in a raised decoration, which was often highly detailed, comparable in execution of detail to a miniature painting. A number of these wares were made specifically for the great international exhibitions.

George Owen (1845-1912) created wonderfully intricate pierced porcelain vessels for the Worcester factory and developed this technique without requiring a pattern, executed entirely by hand. This delicate decoration simulated a netted honeycomb effect, emulating Japanese ivory carving of the 19th century.

Owen was protective over his technique, and how he produced these works is still unknown, refusing to even share his spectacular craft with his son, who worked with his father casting vases with extremely thin walls.

He operated predominately alone and in secret with tools of his own design, never sharing his method with fellow decorators, it has been said Owen protected his secret craft so closely that not even the factory director was permitted to enter his studio until all his tools had been securely hidden.

It is understood that Owen would take a slightly damp vase (referred to as a green vase), incising small rows of holes perfectly executed by hand, with incredible regularity and accuracy sans pattern. These incisions would be made to the interior and exterior of the vase periodically, then allowing for the vase to dry before alternating with another damp piece, adopting the use of wet boxes which would keep each vase moist. This rotation of vases allowed Owen to incise a small number of holes into one before it would dry and become brittle and go back in the wet box.

Owen was celebrated for his attention to detail, with some porcelain vessels pierced with thousands of incisions, and larger pieces created slowly over a period of months. Due to painstakingly slow duration to finish these pieces, if they did not collapse or distort upon firing; a limited number survived leaving a few still on the market today. Owen’s work rightly remains amongst the most valuable porcelain ever produced by the Royal Worcester works.

Conditions of Business / Summary

special conditions of sale – jewellery

Jewellery and watches offered by Leonard Joel are sometimes accompanied by an Independent valuation as stated in the catalogue. These valuations are conducted by registered valuers and are offered purely as independent opinions. Variation may be found as to the colour, clarity and size of stones described in these reports, consequently Leonard Joel does not guarantee these Independent Valuations. Where stones can be weighed accurately, weights will be provided. Weights of set stones are estimates only and are provided to the best of our technical ability. Gram weight on gold and other precious metals are also given as an approximation. Wristwatches and pocket watches are offered in there current condition and Leonard Joel does not guarantee that they are in working order. Items may be thoroughly inspected during the viewing period or by prior arrangement.

authenticity certificates

As various manufacturers may not issue certificates of authenticity, Leonard Joel has no obligation to furnish a buyer with a certificate of authenticity from the manufacturer, except where specifically noted in the catalogue. Unless Leonard Joel is satisfied that it should cancel the sale in accordance with the Limited Warranty provided in the General Conditions of Business, the failure of a manufacturer to issue a certificate will not constitute grounds for cancellation of the sale.

gst

In the event that the vendor is registered for Goods & Services Tax (GST), the invoice to the buyer will provide a separate entry for the GST which is included in the purchase price. All Leonard Joel charges for services referred to in this catalogue are exclusive of GST. Overseas buyers may be entitled to a rebate for GST charged.

protection of movable cultural heritage act 1986 (pmch act)

Buyers should be aware of the PMCH Act which protects Australia’s heritage of movable cultural objects and supports foreign countries’ right to protect their heritage of movable cultural objects. The PMCH Act regulates the export of nationally significant heritage objects, it is not intended to restrict normal and legitimate trade in cultural property, and does not affect an individual’s right to own or sell objects, within Australia.
