Bromley fans locked out “If proof were needed that artist David Bromley has broad appeal, it was found in Melbourne on Sunday. Held on site at Bromley’s former Melbourne studio in Chapel Street, South Yarra, Leonard Joel’s sale of the contents of the artist’s studio grossed $805,250 – well above its $472,650 to $720,400 pre-sale estimate – and $982,000, including buyer’s premium. “His following is breathtaking,” says Leonard Joel managing director John Albrecht, who sees the sale’s success as a key moment in Joel’s rejuvenation. “We had to lock out buyers at the door at 11.15am, unfortunately, because the entire three floors were at capacity.” The eclectic 601-lot sale ranged from artworks by Bromley and other contemporary artists to sculptures, ornaments, furniture, and bric-a-brac. In all, 588 lots, or 98 per cent of items, found new homes, with many of the buyers new to Joels. The vast majority of items were priced at less than $10,000, many less than $3000, and it was here that a lot of the wildly better than expected prices were achieved. The highest price was paid for a work by Bromley, a large bronze sculpture called Celebration. It was hammered down for $45,000, under its $50,000 to $60,000 estimate. Bromley, 52, has moved to Byron Bay. Known to many within the art and museum communities for his detailed and ranging knowledge of early Australian history Murray has now decided, in his own words, “that it is time to share the collection”. Murray has been collecting for half a century and the collection of objects, art, ephemera, memorabilia and bush furniture presents an eclectic and very personal survey of Murray’s collecting taste. As a writer and cultural anthropologist Murray can truly lay claim to have “travelled the world” and immersed himself in so many cultures – in this sense the collection is very much a “world collection”.
