Decorative Arts
After a full first half of 2026, with great success in our March Decorative Arts auction followed by more in our auctions of selected contents of the Toorak mansion Coonac and then the Terence Lane collection, we move into the second half with our July Decorative Arts auction.
This auction opens with a curated selection of eighteenth-century drinking glasses from a private collection (lots 1–13), predominantly English with various designs including air twist, mercury twist and opaque twist stems. Also offered in our glass section are three pieces by René Lalique including two female figures, ‘Suzanne’ and ‘Thaïs’ (lots 17 and 18), rarely seen in the Australian market.
The porcelain and ceramics section of the auction begins with an impressive selection from a private collection of twenty-two pieces of Royal Worcester porcelain (lots 19–40), several of large size, decorated by the most illustrious and sought-after names of the factory’s early twentieth century heyday, including George Owen, the Stintons, Harry Davis, Charles Baldwyn (including an example decorated, rarely, with rabbits), and Richard Sebright. The collection from which these are offered was carefully assembled over many years by a discerning South Australian collector who sought to acquire only fine examples of the work of these and other important decorators.
Further highlights from our porcelain section include Worcester from other collectors, including a cased demi-tasse set decorated by Harry Stinton (in addition to a demi-tasse set decorated by James Stinton offered from the South Australian collection) and further examples by Baldwyn and Sebright. We also present two pieces of Wedgwood ‘Fairyland’ lustre ware by Susannah Margaretta ‘Daisy’ Makeig-Jones (lots 50 and 51).
The silver section of the auction (extending to gold and objets de vertu) opens with the second part of an offering from a Melbourne private collection (lots 54-70). With a focus on notable and interesting flatware of the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, this includes an early post-colonial American ‘Old English’ pattern soup ladle by John Kingston, circa 1780 (lot 61) and two rare late eighteenth-century French silver ragout spoons (lot 67).
From other properties, the silver also includes several lots of goblets and other objects by the much-admired Geelong-born modernist silversmith Stuart Devlin (lots 74–77), a gorgeous Belle Époque parcel-gilt silver ice cream service by Hénin & Vivier, Paris (lot 83), silver plate flatware and tableware services by Christofle (lots 78, 78A, and 97), a silver-mounted enamel and nephrite bell push by Fabergé (lot 82), and an 18k gold pen formerly the property of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor (lot 98).
The furniture in this auction is a typically large and diverse offering of fine and interesting English, European, and Australian pieces of various periods and styles. It includes, from another South Australian collection, a group of very fine Victorian pieces, some by important makers, including a superb centre table attributed to Holland & Sons (lot 112), a fine Carlton House desk by Howard & Sons (lot 117), and two pieces by Edwards & Roberts (lots 115 and 116). The notable Australian furniture in the auction ranges from a rare colonial period suite of eight cedar chairs probably of Sydney origin (lot 126) to a monumental oak hall-stand and accompanying hall chair commissioned circa 1900 to furnish the grand Toorak mansion Leura (lots 135 and 135) to a dining suite and other pieces by Schulim Krimper (lots 176–178).
The final stages of the auction begin with a small group of nineteenth-century portraits of the Georgian playwright Thomas Morton and some of his descendants consigned by a branch of Morton family to whom to these have descended. The portrait of Thomas Morton is by the notable portraitist Samuel Laurence and the group also includes a portrait of Juliana Hervey (née Morton), author of The Adventures of a Lady in Tartary, Thibet, China, & Kashmir (1853), a rare Victorian account of exotic travel by a woman, a first-edition set of which, apparently the author’s own, is included with her portrait.
This is followed by art and sculpture, again a diverse selection, including nineteenthcentury English and European paintings, nineteenth-century and Art Deco bronzes by Emmanuel Frémiet, Ferdinand Preiss, and Charles Arthur Miller (lots 199–203), and Ernest Buckmaster’s portrait of General Sir Henry Chauvel, GCMG, KCB (lot 185), entered by the artist for the 1935 Archibald Prize.
Beyond these many highlights, we offer our usual rich and diverse array across our various categories, all specially selected by our specialists, which we look forward to sharing with all.

‘Leura’, one of the grandest houses in Toorak, was built in the early 1870s by the pastoralist Robert Simson (1819–1896) on an estate at the corner of Toorak and Orrong Roads.
Following Simson’s death, the house was acquired in 1899 by the politician and pastoralist Thomas Henry Payne (1862–1932), who commissioned the present and following lot as part of a thorough renovation and refurnishing of the house. It appears this furnishing scheme remained largely intact for the next half-century, until its dispersal at auction in 1955 before demolition of the house.
The various reliefs to the hall-stand include as a tribute a portrait bust in profile of the famous steeplechase jockey Thomas ‘Tommy’ Corrigan (1851 or 1854–1894), who had ridden for T.H. Payne and died of injuries suffered when his mount Waiter fell in the 1894 Grand National Steeplechase at Caulfield.
S.P. Charteris, ‘Art Cabinet Maker’, was a highly regarded maker of fine furniture, operating from around 1880 to the 1930s, often working as a contractor maker in collaboration with Melbourne’s leading furniture retailer and maker, W.H. Rocke & Co.
