THE PORT PHILLIP FARMERS’ SOCIETY’S STERLING SILVER 1862 ‘CHALLENGE CUP’ $6,000-9,000

Our last Decorative Arts auction for 2026 opens with a single-owner collection formed by a Melbourne gentleman with an interest in fine European furniture, sculpture, porcelain, and silver of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (lots 1-59). With his particular taste for the work of Paul Storr, our offering includes no fewer than nine examples by this most celebrated and sought-after silversmith including a large and impressive sterling silver basin on foot (lot 51) and a fine Neo-Classical coffee pot on stand with warming burner (lot 52). Other highlights from this collection include a Napoleon III bureau (lot 28) and secretaire bookcase cabinet (lot 46) each in Boulle manner, a tall Royal Worcester porcelain vase decorated by John Stinton, Jnr (lot 49), and an imperial Russian silver presentation cigarette case (lot 31). Our offering of silver from other properties ranges from a Commonwealth period tastevin (lot 60) to twentieth century pieces and much in between. This includes twelve silver flatware services – the largest number we have offered in one auction – of various sizes, patterns, and periods, together with a James II silver covered tankard (lot 64), fine Georgian pieces, a Victorian monteith presented by the Empress Eugénie de Montijo (lot 69), an antique Russian silver and enamel triptych icon (lot 77), and a lovely quaich by Liberty (lot 83). Gracing our front cover and leading our section devoted to items of Australian historical and related importance and interest is a fine silver tea canister made exceptionally rare for being engraved with the crest of the arms and motto of Captain James Cook, posthumously granted to his widow Elizabeth in 1785. Assayed in 1786 and presumably acquired by Elizabeth around this time and then promptly and proudly engraved with the newly-granted crest in honour of her much-loved husband, the canister is one of very few known objects closely associated with the Cooks marked with his armorial bearings. Other highlights from this section include the Port Phillip Farmers’ Society’s sterling silver 1862 ‘Challenge Cup’ and other trophies awarded to James and Murdock Macintosh in the late 1850s and early 1860s (lots 120–122). We also offer a small selection of silver and gold jewellery by the notable early Geelong silversmith Edward Fischer (lots 123-128). Considered one of Australia’s finest silversmiths, well known for his outstanding craftsmanship, Fischer had the honour in 1876 of designing and making the first locally-made Melbourne Cup trophy. From another private collection, we present a collection of nineteenth century Australian photographs including examples by Nicholas Caire and Fred Kruger and a suite of four of John William Lindt’s important studio portraits of indigenous Australian men posed in ‘bush’ settings (lot 137). Our typically diverse range of fine and interesting English and European furniture of various periods and styles extends to America to include a very well-presented example of a Wooton ‘cabinet secretary’ desk (lot 151) and to Japan (and France) for a fine lacquer cabinet on stand (lot 158). We also offer a large antique Swiss interchangeable cylinder orchestra music box on stand (lot 178) similar in form and complexity to the music box sold in our November 2025 Decorative Arts auction for an all-time record of price of $225,000 (including premium). From other properties we offer an impressive suite of Victorian pollard and figured oak dining room furniture of baronial proportions, probably Scottish, including a 4.65m long table with its original leaves and cabinet for these (lot 179); a rare pair of Victorian gilt-framed overmantel mirrors by London maker Abraham Gardner (lot 183); and a Napoleon III metalmounted oak cave à liqueur by luxury Parisian maker, Tahan (lot 170). The art and sculpture in the final section of our auction includes a seventeenth Spanish suite of eleven depictions of the Apostles in oil on copper (lot 209) and a well-known and much reproduced half-length miniature portrait of Anna Lefroy (née Jane Anna Elizabeth Austen), niece of the novelist Jane Austen (lot 212) to whom Anna was very close. Also offered is a porcelain luncheon service by Gwyn Hanssen Pigott (lot 221) and three large earthenware planters made and decoratively glazed by John Perceval in the 1950s (lots 222–224). As always, we look forward to sharing all this and more with you. chiara curcio head of decorative arts, design & interiors

ELIZABETH COOK'S STERLING SILVER TEA CANISTER, ENGRAVED WITH THE CREST OF HER HUSBAND, CAPTAIN JAMES COOK Thomas Daniell, London, 1786 Of oval outline, the sides fluted all round, the hinged cover with a domed centre and pineapple finial, the central flute to the front engraved with James Cook's motto 'Circa orbem' ['Around the globe'] and crest of an arm embowed in naval uniform holding the Union flag within an engraved and punched shaped border, the other flutes engraved with alternating floral pendant designs between triglyph-andmetope borders at the top and foot, the cover with a conforming border 15cm high, 13.5cm wide, 9cm deep, 414g PROVENANCE H.R. Jessop Ltd, London, from whom purchased by the vendor's father in 1967 (apparently via Davidson's, Newcastle upon Tyne, acting as intermediary) OTHER NOTES James Cook's three voyages of discovery in the Pacific and south Atlantic oceans between 1768 and 1779, all detailed in published accounts written by himself, attracted much fascinated attention in English

society and beyond. So it was with much shock and sadness that the report of Cook's violent death on a Hawaiian beach in early 1789, which reached London nearly a year earlier, was received. King George III, reportedly moved to tears by the news, immediately granted Cook's widow Elizabeth a substantial pension for life and tributes and letters of condolence poured from the great and good across Britain and Europe. In 1785, Elizabeth, wishing to have an honour for her husband that could be perpetuated by his family, applied for a grant of a coat of arms prompted by 'her Anxiety to preserve on record in the College of Arms the Memory of her late dear Husband, the ablest and most renowned Navigator which this or any other Country has produced'. It is mark of George III's respect for Cook that he approved this exceptional grant – apparently, still the only posthumous grant of arms ever made by the College of Arms. In seeking the grant, Elizabeth requested 'such Armorial Ensigns as may allude to [Cook's] distinguished Character to be borne by his Descendants and placed on any Monument or otherwise to his Memory'. The Letters Patent granting the arms on 3 September, 1785, specify that

the crest of the coat of arms be 'an Arm embowed, vested in the Uniform of a Captain of the Royal Navy, in the Hand the Union Jack on a staff' with the motto 'Circa orbem' ('Round the world'). Sadly for Elizabeth there was little opportunity for her family to use the bearings as she hoped, with all six of the Cooks' children dying prematurely, the last in 1794, leaving no other descendants. Consequently, the present lot is one of very few known objects closely associated with the Cooks that bear his arms. The National Library of Australia holds a silver salver assayed in 1764 and believed to have been used by the Cooks together in their household and then later engraved with his full coat of arms shortly after these were granted. A pair of silver candlesticks in the National Maritime Museum, London, assayed in 1784 and acquired by Elizabeth, is, like the present lot, engraved with Cook's crest and motto 'Circa orbem'. Made by Thomas Daniell and assayed in London in 1786 a year or so after the grant of Cook's arms, this canister was presumably acquired by Elizabeth at this time and then promptly and proudly engraved with the then newly-granted crest in honour of her muchloved husband. $20,000-30,000

Hawkins, Nineteenth Century Australian Silver (1990), vol. 1, 221–223, illustrated pl. 183 (reproducing the 1862 ‘Leader’ illustration) OTHER NOTES John Hawkins cites and illustrates the present lot as an example of a practice in Melbourne in the late 1850s and early 1860s whereby English-made cups and ewers were imported (including a stock probably brought by William Edwards upon his move from London to Melbourne in 1857) and embellished in Melbourne, probably in Edwards’s workshop, for presentation as trophies. Having established themselves on part of the ‘Glenroy Estate’ (on land now in Melbourne’s north west) in the mid-1850s, the Scottish immigrant brothers James and Murdock Macintosh (alternatively Mackintosh) imported the Clydesdale stallion ‘Prince Charlie’ in 1857. The horse soon became one of the most celebrated specimens of livestock in Victoria, winning, amongst other prizes, the Port Phillip Farmers’ Society Champion Cup in 1859, 1860, and 1862, qualifying him for the Society’s Challenge Cup in 1862 (the present lot), awarded for multiple champion prize wins. The Port Phillps Farmers’ Society, established in 1848 from smaller local farmers’ societies to develop and promote improvements in agriculture, became the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria in 1890. $6,000-9,000 120

A VICTORIAN AUSTRALIAN CEDAR SIDE OR HALL CHAIR BY GEORGE THWAITES Melbourne, late 1850s The medallion-shaped back moulded and carved with a rope twist inner border to both its front and reverse raised on a foliate-carved base and mounted to the seat with a gadrooned shoe, the hard seat on rails fluted to all sides raised on turned, carved, and fluted supports to the front 98cm high, 48cm wide, 48cm deep other notes This chair is rare surviving example of a suite of ‘target back’ chairs by George Thwaites thought to have been supplied to the National Bank of Australasia as part of the original furniture of its first building at 279 Collins Street, Melbourne, completed in 1858. Of the various forms of Thwaites’s ‘target back’ chairs, ranging from the first around 1853 to more evolved forms through the later 1850s and 1860s, John Hawkins has identified the present form, of the earlier, more simple design but distinguished in having both the front and reverse of the back moulded and carved with a matching concentric design, as being those perhaps supplied to the Bank of Australasia (John Hawkins, ‘Daniel Livingstone, I presume’, Regional Furniture, 28 [2014], pp 142–157, particularly pp 152–155 and note to fig. 14b). A matched set of six chairs of the same design, with backs moulded front and reverse and ascribed to the National Bank of Australasia was sold at Leski Auctions, Australian & Historical, 7 December 2024, lot 269. $700-1,000 129

[BATCHELDER & Co., photographer], THE LAMBERT ALBUM An enlarged example of this extremely rare work, probably unique in this format [Batchelder & Co., publisher, the anonymous introduction probably by James Smith], The Lambert Album, Comprising Thirty-Two Character Portraits of Mr J.C. Lambert, Photographed at the Establishment of Batchelder & Co. (Batchelder & Co., Melbourne, 1866) Quarto, title in black and red, introduction (uncredited), list of portraits, and thirty-three albumen portraits of Lambert (each 9.5 x 6cm) mounted on nine card leaves with tissue guards, the first alone as frontispiece (with Lambert in day dress), the others of him in character in various roles in groups of four, original red half morocco and cloth with gilt title to the front and gilt-decorated spine, a.e.g. other notes It appears the present lot, apparently unrecorded, is one of only four known examples of this work – one of the earliest photographically illustrated books produced in Australia – and the only one with this number of portraits, double the number otherwise known, albeit mounted with smaller prints than those in other examples. In his copy of the work, James Smith (1820–1910), the prominent Melbourne art critic who is believed to have written its anonymous introduction, recorded his understanding that only three copies were produced, these with sixteen portraits.
