Decorative Arts –

This October our auction offering opens with the private house contents of Trawalla, Toorak. Lots 1-70 feature antiques and custom-made pieces styled and sourced by the late Stuart Rattle. The collection is reminiscent of Rattle's passion for English design, with a modern twist. Following this collection is the Douglas of Tilquillie family collection (Lots 75-89) featuring antiques passed down through various generations to the current Douglas family member. Treasures from the collection feature a lovely Italian micro mosaic box (lot 83) in addition to two Douglas female portraits from the 19th Century. Our front cover features an inherited collection of Russian silver and enamel items (lots 92-100). The collection was forged with the vendor’s great grandfather, who was a Russian Silversmith in Moscow and immigrated to Italy around 1895. The majority of his collection consisted of pieces he had been gifted or collected from other silversmiths. The collection was passed to the vendor’s grandfather who immigrated to Australia in 1923 and hence by descent to the current owner. These colourful enamels became popular in Russia in the late 19th Century, due to the influence of Chinese cloisonne and

revivalist styles inspired by earlier Byzantine models Within our European design section, we feature a lovely Biedermeier secretaire abattant (lot 149), showcasing a stylish architectural interior, a pair of waisted ‘Ballerina’ cabinets designed by Polish born cabinet maker Andrzej Loza for Studio Loza (lots 110 &111) and an impressive French four-piece macassar ebony and portoro marble dining suite (lots 105-108). Macassar ebony, named after the Indonesian port city of Makassar, boasts a richly figured exotic wood, which was in the height of fashion in France during the 1920s and 1930s, due to its rarity. Another item of interest in the auction is the Letter to Admiral Nelson (lot 199), which was allegedly discovered in an old trunk acquired at a Burnhams property in the English county of Norfolk. In his letter Admiral Nelson quite simply expresses gratitude at receiving an unexpected gift from a distant relative, being a hare and two turkeys. The auction also features a rare collection of antiquities including an Egyptian sarcophagus panel fragment (lot 217) and an Egyptian limestone canopic votive jar (lot 210). — Chiara Curcio | Head of Decorative Arts

CONTENTS OF TOORAK MANSION, TRAWALLA LOTS 1 – 70

Lots 1–70 present the pieces from the historic Toorak Mansion, Trawalla. The stately 19th Century home featuring seven bedrooms, two dining rooms, a billiard room, a study, and two sitting rooms, was tastefully restored in the late 2000s by highly regarded Australian interior designer, the late Stuart Rattle.The restoration showcased his fine attention to detail and effortless ability to merge colours, styles, and patterns into one unified aesthetic; always subtly paying homage to classical motifs and early English design.

The Douglas Family name origin. The Douglas's were known as 'the great turbulent, daring and too often treacherous house'. The first of the family on record was William De Douglas (Duglas), born sometime before 1157 in medieval Scotland. His descendents include the Douglases of Drumlanrig who actively engaged in supporting James I and his successors. The Douglas of Tilquhillie branch was founded in 1479 in the marriage of David Douglas and Janet Ogston of Tilquhillie. This collection features lot 89, a Victorian mahogany hall chair which bears the Douglas of Tilquillie crest, together with two Douglas female portraits from the 19th century.

It is said that a Pilkington who fought under King Harold at the battle of Hastings in 1066AD, afterwards escaped under the disguise of a thresher, hence the crest’s thresher emblem. The Pilkington lineage is the family of Lancashire – the Rivington division. The most notable of the Pilkingtons of Rivington was James Pilkington who became the first Protestant Bishop of Durham from 1561 until his death in 1576. This handwritten letter autographed by the Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, 1st Duke of Bronté, also known simply as Admiral Nelson (1758-1805). He is regarded as the greatest ever British naval hero for his services to Britain during the Napoleonic Wars. The letter was allegedly discovered in an old trunk acquired at a Burnhams property in the English county of Norfolk. It bears the Britannia watermark and is autographed ‘Nelson & Bronte’ in reference to Admiral Nelson’s status as the first Duke of Bronte. It is written with the Admiral’s distinctive left hand (having lost his right arm in battle in July 1797). It also conveys his strong character and charm that has distinguished so many of his letters.

These valuations are conducted by registered valuers and are offered purely as independent opinions. Variation may be found as to the colour, clarity and size of stones described in these reports, consequently Leonard Joel does not guarantee these Independent Valuations. Where stones can be weighed accurately, weights will be provided. Weights of set stones are estimates only and are provided to the best of our technical ability. Gram weight on gold and other precious metals are also given as an approximation. Wristwatches and pocket watches are offered in there current condition and Leonard Joel does not guarantee that they are in working order. Items may be thoroughly inspected during the viewing period or by prior arrangement. Authenticity Certificates As various manufacturers may not issue certificates of authenticity, Leonard Joel has no obligation to furnish a buyer with a certificate of authenticity from the manufacturer, except where specifically noted in the catalogue. The buyer’s premium is reflected by a reduction in the Seller’s Commission and is a common practice throughout Australia and overseas.

Property subject to the Artist Resale Royalty Lots with the § sign will be subject to payment of the Artist Resale Royalty in the event that the lot is sold for a hammer price of $1,000 or more. The Australian Resale Royalty is a flat rate of 5 percent (5%) levy on the hammer price (including GST). The Australian Resale Royalty is payable by the buyer in addition to the buyer’s premium plus applicable GST. Damage Any viewer who damages a Lot will be held liable for all damage caused and shall reimburse Leonard Joel for all costs and expenses relating to rectification of such damage. Title Leonard Joel guarantees good title to all lots. Warranties and Condition Reports Condition reports will be available for any lot upon request, subject to conditions. Estimates Estimates are a reflection of Leonard Joel’s opinion of the current market values, based on historic and current market realisations of similar lots. Estimates are inclusive of any GST, which may be applicable. Actual prices at this sale may fall short or exceed the estimates. Payment In any event accounts must be settled with Leonard Joel no later than 4pm two days after the auction. Attention is specifically drawn to condition 21 of the Buyer’s Conditions of Sale. Convention on the Means of Prohibiting the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property. It is the responsibility of the Buyer to ensure that the export of any lots purchased are not subject to, or in breach of, this Act.
