Decorative Arts
Following the great success of our Decorative Arts and Asian art categories in 2021,
—
includes a blackwood games table of rare and unusual design probably attributable
this year we are excited to offer our buyers and vendors more auctions more often, moving to a three auction calendar in 2022, beginning with our March auction. This auction opens with an interesting selection of Australian Decorative Arts. This to an unidentified Melbourne maker (lot 1); an early 20th century Melbourne-made ‘Chippendale Gothick’ partners’ desk (lot 5); and a monumental boardroom table (lot 9), custom made for the National Australia Bank for use in its executive offices and said to have hosted two former Prime Ministers. Discovered late last year and adorning our front cover are a pair of rare royal armorial plates, by Flight, Barr, Flight (lot 126). These early 19th century plates bear the royal coat of arms and the crest of the Order of the Garter, the oldest and most senior order of chivalry in Britain. Limited to twenty-four living members, appointments to the order recognise the highest level of public service or service to the sovereign. These plates are rare on the open market, with most now in the Royal Collection Trust, so it is an absolute delight for us to offer a pair. Other highlights are a striking intact pair of late Victorian stained glass door surrounds
lot 126
(lots 15 & 16) from ‘Brimlea’, a grand house formerly standing in Murrumbeena; an antique Tabriz medallion carpet (lot 41) from the collection of Robert Bleakley; a Roman marble sarcophagus panel (lot 127); and a fine early Victorian rosewood-cased marine stick barometer (lot 104) by Jones and Graham, Liverpool. We look forward to inviting our clients in room or virtually for our upcoming viewing. — David Parsons | Head of Decorative Arts

Glass LOTS 15–23
15
Lots 15 and 16 are both fine examples of late 19th century stained and painted glass. Both sets of door surrounds come from the property “Brimlea”, one of the original stately homes located on Railway Parade, Murrumbeena. Each set is heavily stained and painted with exquisite studies of birds, and highly decorated with jewels and spun glass roundels. While there is no definitive information regarding the maker or firm behind the entry surrounds, particular qualities in their craftsmanship and design indicate either Australian firms Brooks, Robinson & Co, or William Montgomery. Both of these Melbourne based firms were known to have commenced production of stained glass windows in the mid to late 1880s, roughly twenty years after the production of stained glass windows commenced in Melbourne. This is also consistent with the period of Brimlea’s construction. The success of William Montgomery, Brooks, Robinson & Co, together with other esteemed contemporaries made Melbourne the leading centre of stained glass in the Southern Hemisphere. Today the large traditional studios no longer exist, but in their place small studios and individual artists continue to practice this beautiful ancient craft. Dominic Kavanagh

Lots 124, a hand painted Royal Worcester pot pouree, and lot 125, a pair of Royal Worcester porcelain vases with covers, are painted by two members of the esteemed Stinton family, John and Harry Stinton. Both lots feature evocative painted scenes of highland cattle, a subject synonymous with the Stintons. Cattle drink from an icy steam, emerge from the mist on a rugged mountain side, and wander blissfully through highland terrain. John and Harry, who are in fact father and son, are arguably the most celebrated artists of the Stinton family who painted for Royal Worcester. The Stinton family dynasty at various Worcester porcelain factories, namely Royal Worcester, lasted for almost 167 years; a period that spanned the late 18th century to the mid 20th century. Other notable Stinton artists include Henry Stinton, John Stinton Sr, Walter Stinton, and James Stinton. Two women of the Stinton dynasty, Annie and Kate, also painted for Royal Worcester but there is not much known about their work.

This pair of rare royal porcelain plates were first commissioned to the order of King George III in 1805, and each bears the crest of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.
PROVENANCE: Private Collection, Melbourne.
These plates remain rare on the open market, with most residing within the Royal Collection Trust.
The prestigious Order of the Garter was established by King Edward III in 1348, who was inspired by the legendary tales of King Arthur and the knights of the round table to form his own collective of honourable knights. Centuries later, it is known as the oldest and most senior order of chivalry in Britain. Appointments into the order are solely at the sovereign’s discretion (currently The Prince of Wales), and is limited to twenty-four living members, including members of the British Royal family and foreign monarchs. Membership is traditionally in recognition of a national contribution for outstanding public service or personal service to the Royal family.
Chiara Curcio OTHER NOTES: King George III originally commissioned this service in 1805 and continued to order supplements through the Flight, Barr & Barr period of the factory. See H. Sandon, Flight and Barr Worcester Porcelain 1783–1840, Suffolk, 1978, p. 19 for other examples from this royal service. A similar example from the same set is currently housed at the Royal Collection Trust. $12,000 – 15,000
