ADRIAN — A $43.4 million investment in its future will significantly expand Adrian Steel’s operations in its hometown.

The 112,000-square-foot expansion — the largest in the company’s history — will replace a parking lot and take the building, located at 906 James St., almost out to Beecher Street. A new parking lot will be constructed on the site of the recently demolished Goodwill building on Beecher.

At least 40 new jobs are expected to be created over the next five years as a result of the expansion.

“It allows us to add the capacity and equipment we need for the future, and lay out the floor plan efficiently so it flows the way we need it to,” CEO Marc Jackson said.

The expansion is the latest chapter in a history of growth for Adrian Steel, which is a national leader in automotive aftermarket equipment and commercial cargo management solutions for the skilled trades.

It has more than 900 employees in 17 locations around the U.S. and Canada.

The Adrian facility employs 527 people.

“Adrian is the leading brand in the industry, and we want to improve on that in the future,” Jackson said. “We want to build our brand recognition.”

The company’s extensive portfolio includes shelving, drawers, cabinets, partitions, ladder racks, toolboxes for commercial vans and light-duty trucks, and many other items.

Its products are quite familiar to skilled tradespeople such as plumbers, electricians, HVAC installers, painters, utility workers, and contractors.

But members of the general public might well have used Adrian Steel equipment without even realizing it. The company also upfits vans for U-Haul, installing the van’s partition, side posts, and more.

While the company has long been known as a commercial van upfitter, “we’re trying to grow our light-duty truck business,” Jackson said.

Sheriff’s office building named in honor of Germond

ADRIAN — Elected officials, law enforcement colleagues, and family members of the late Richard Germond gathered on May 22 as the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office building was dedicated in his name.

Germond retired as Lenawee County sheriff in 2001 after 36 years in office. At the time of his retirement, he was the longest-serving sheriff in the state. He died last spring at the age of 90.

His former colleagues remembered him as a mentor and as someone who was dedicated to serving the people of Lenawee County.

Former sheriff Jack Welsh, who preceded Bevier in the office, said Germond’s reputation extended far beyond Lenawee County. He noted that Germond served as president of both the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association and the National Sheriffs’ Association.

“Sheriff Germond was an icon,” he said.

Welsh added that the sheriff’s office building seems like an especially appropriate way to honor Germond because he worked so hard to get it built.

“Nobody fought harder to get a new building than he did,” Welsh said. “For me personally, to see his name on the side of this building means a lot.”

ERIK GABLE/LENAWEE VOICE County commissioner David Aungst, who is retired from the sheriff’s office, talked about how Germond got to know everybody in the office personally, taking an interest in their lives. He also noted Germond’s fairness.

His community activities meant that if a deputy pulled somebody over on road patrol, that person might well be somebody who knew the sheriff. But, Aungst said, “as long as we went out and did our jobs and we were fair about it, he stood by us 100 percent.”

Retired Adrian police chief Terry Collins, who is also now a county commissioner, called Germond “a giant

of a man” and fondly recalled his mentorship over the years.

Lynne Blocksom, one of Germond’s five daughters, noted that at one point in his career, he was offered the position of executive director of the National Sheriffs’ Association. In that role, he could have been a voice for all sheriffs across the country, working on training initiatives and driving public policy. “He declined the position when he found out he would have to uproot his family, move to Washington D.C., and leave the community he had served for so many years,” she said.

Align Center launches partnership with new career app Jebbee ADRIAN — The Align Center for Workforce Development in Adrian has launched a partnership with Jebbee, a new social platform intended to help students investigate possible careers.

Jebbee is a social media platform for career exploration. It connects students with mentors, educational institutions, and companies to discover suitable career paths and the educational programs to achieve them.

The partnership was rolled out on May 5 at a lunch event held at the Align Center.

Jebbee cofounder Stephanie Hickman Boyse, an Adrian native and former CEO of Brazeway, spoke at the event along with Nate Parker, superintendent of Adrian Public Schools.

“This gives us a practical way to better align what students are learning with real career pathways,” Parker said. “Through this partnership, we’re expanding opportunities for students while helping local employers play a more active role in developing future talent.”

Jebbee is intended to replace one-off career events with continuous, realtime engagement between students and professionals. The goal is to streamline decision-making for schools and employers while building more resilient, long-term talent pipelines.

“When schools and businesses collaborate in meaningful ways, students make better decisions, employers find stronger candidates and communities grow and prosper,” Hickman Boyse said.

LOCAL NEWS Voters reject school district’s recreation center proposal ADRIAN — The Adrian school district’s millage proposal, which would have funded a new community recreation center at Adrian High School as well as renovations to the school’s performing arts center, was defeated in the May 5 special election.

The total was 2,011 votes for the proposal, and 2,322 against.

Citizens for Community Wellness & Recreation, the committee advocating for the proposal, posted this statement on Facebook: “Thank you to everyone who worked to collaborate with the community to develop this proposal and vision. Your countless hours and hard work are appreciated. Our kids, citizens and community are fortunate to have such great people working and advocating for them. We will continue to think big, take on challenges and do the hard work that our kids deserve and maintain our relentless focus on providing unmatched opportunities for our students to be leaders in academics, the arts and athletics.”

The proposal was to borrow $27.5 million, which would have been repaid using an 0.65-mill levy. The district put the measure on the ballot after doing a needs assessment and working with a polling firm to gauge public opinion.

City commission approves changes for intersection of East Maumee and Maple ADRIAN — With road work already planned for Maple Avenue later this year, the city of Adrian is taking advantage of the opportunity to make some changes to the intersection of Maple and East Maumee Street near the Lenawee County Fairgrounds.

City commissioners approved plans to redesign the intersection at their May 4 meeting.

Currently, Maple Avenue intersects East Maumee Street at an angle.

Engineering services director Matt Tomaszewski told the commission last month that this often leads to westbound drivers veering onto Maple at a high speed, rather than slowing down to turn like they would at a 90-degree intersection.

“A lot of people take that route heading westbound and speed through there,” he said.

Tomaszewski proposed the idea of making Maple Avenue curve so that it intersects Maumee at a 90-degree angle.

Because road construction on Maple Avenue is already scheduled for this fall, Tomaszewski said, that presents a good opportunity to make a change.

“We thought now is the time to do it if we wanted to make things safer,” he said.

“Our goal here is to slim down the intersection, make it more pedestrianfriendly, and allow people to actually

This will also reduce the length of the pedestrian crossing from 128 feet to 45 feet, and would allow the intersection to be aligned with South Dean Street on the other side of Maumee Street.

Tomaszewski said the engineering work for the change will cost about $25,000.

Currently, city workers have set up barrels and traffic cones at the intersection to mimic the intended future traffic flow.

wife, Dee, in April 2021. A consecutive sentence of 17 months to 10 years was handed down for tampering with evidence, with that sentence coming from Warner having concealed his wife’s body inside an anhydrous ammonia tank for more than three years.

State law gave Judge Michael Olsaver the option of making the sentences concurrent or consecutive.

At his May 7 sentencing, defense attorney Mary Chartier said Warner continues to maintain his innocence.

City faces divisions heading into administrator search

ADRIAN — City commissioners and members of the public were united at the May 4 commission meeting in their praise for city administrator Chad Baugh and their regret at his departure. But that was just about the only point of agreement, as both Baugh’s resignation and the process of replacing him led to several tense moments.

Baugh, who was hired last fall, has accepted a new position as a court administrator in Wayne County. He stated at the May 4 meeting that while he had originally expected to stay in Adrian about 10 years, the court administrator opening was unexpected and represents an opportunity to work with judges he’s known since the beginning of his career.

Commissioners and residents praised Baugh’s transparency, accessibility and communication skills, and said that he made a big difference in a short time.

“What you have done in just seven months is phenomenal,” Mayor Angela Heath said to Baugh.

“You brought intention, trust, clarity, stability, kindness, inclusion, authenticity, transparency, safety, leadership and teamwork to the city, and you led carefully,” added commissioner Aaron Chesher.

However, that was one of the only points of unanimity in a meeting that saw several tense moments.

Speakers allege a toxic workplace During the public comment portions of the meeting, downtown property owner Scott Westfall alleged that city commissioner Mary Roberts had been verbally abusive toward city employees, particularly community development director Lisa Hewitt-Cruz.

“Lisa has been screamed at in meetings, verbally berated in her own office, and driven to the point of quitting on numerous occasions,” Westfall said.

He also criticized commissioner Bob Behnke, saying to Behnke that “You’re not much better. You’ve publicly denigrated members of Lisa’s department and harmed their reputations.”

Westfall said he believes Roberts should resign.

Gordon Gauss, a former city commissioner, made similar comments.

“There have been repeated instances where Commissioner Roberts has publicly criticized, spoken down to, or disparaged city employees, people who are here to serve our community and who deserve to be treated with basic respect,” Gauss said.

City resident Nancy O’Connor of Adrian said she has been in meetings where Hewitt-Cruz was “rudely berated.”

She also said she believes Baugh is “too professional and polite” to talk about reasons for his departure.

“I really believe that if aspects of this commission had been different, he would have stayed,” she said.

Roberts, contacted after the May 4 meeting, declined to comment.

Behnke stated: “I respect the right of residents and stakeholders to express their opinions during public comment.

While not everyone will agree on every issue, I remain focused on serving the residents of Adrian with professionalism, transparency, and dedication while advancing the public’s trust.”

Westfall also predicted that the city would soon lose Hewitt-Cruz in addition to Baugh. Later in May, Hewitt-Cruz submitted her resignation to accept a similar position with the Lenawee County government.

Administrator search begins Also on May 4, the commission started the process of seeking Baugh’s replacement. Yeo & Yeo, the consulting firm that conducted the last search, is carrying out this process as well.

The city’s original contract with Yeo & Yeo stated that if the city administrator

left within a year of starting employment, the company would waive its own fees for a second search, charging the city only for travel, advertising, and any thirdparty costs. Because of this, the second search is estimated to cost about $4,000.

Commissioner Matt Schwartz proposed having Yeo & Yeo reach out to the top applicants from the last search and see if any are still interested.

“We’re in a time crunch,” he said, noting that the city is currently under a December deadline to make sure all the funds from a $15 million state grant get spent.

Behnke disagreed, saying the search should not be limited to people who applied last year.

“Let’s not hold ourselves to previous candidates who applied for the position.

In seven or eight months a lot of things can change,” he said.

Behnke also noted that three out of seven commissioners are new and were elected after the last search.

Heath said the search firm can both contact past applicants and advertise for new candidates.

Sadler named acting administrator The commission voted 5-2 to accept Heath’s recommendation that utilities director Will Sadler be named acting city administrator.

Heath said it was Baugh’s advice that the role be temporarily filled by someone who is already working for the city. She also said that police chief Vince Emrick, who filled in as administrator during the last vacancy, was not interested in doing it again.

Sadler was one of five finalists for the administrator role last year. While no commissioners objected to his qualifications, Schwartz expressed concern that having an acting administrator who has previously expressed interest in the job could discourage other applicants.

“I don’t want it to appear that our commission is giving a rubber stamp to

someone that we know is interested in the job,” he said.

Amy Cell, president of Yeo & Yeo HR Advisory Solutions, attended the meeting via Zoom call. She said that concern can be handled.

“It is fine to have an interim and it will not dissuade applicants if it is messaged correctly when the question comes up,” she said.

Commissioner Tiffany Zych expressed support for Sadler as acting administrator.

“He knows his stuff, his attention to detail is unmatched, and I think he would be a very smooth transition for the time being,” she said.

Schwartz and commissioner Chip Moore dissented from the vote to appoint Sadler.

Departing administrator gives final thoughts Baugh told commissioners that his departure was because “an opportunity opened in my life that I didn’t foresee.”

“This is a beautiful place,” he said.

“Both commissions that have been sitting since I’ve been working here have been outstanding. I respect the staff tremendously, the work that they’ve done over the years. I can tell you they’ve learned to survive and adapt and make things happen, and we couldn’t ask for more when it comes to that.”

He described his philosophy as “yes before no,” and always trying to come up with a solution. He also said that building cohesion is going to be important as the city moves forward.

“Even the stakeholders that seem like they’re not aligned right now, every one of the folks that I’ve met … they love Adrian, and you’re not that far apart,” he said.

“Everyone I’ve met has great intentions. We’ve just got to bring them together,” Baugh added.

“These folks here coming out on a Monday night and crowding this room love this city, so I’d like to see what you do with it next.”

Should Adrian sell City Hall and move into a smaller building?

ADRIAN — Adrian City Hall is larger than necessary, inefficiently utilized, and should be sold, outgoing community development director Lisa HewittCruz said in a memo to Adrian city commissioners as she exited the job last month.

Hewitt-Cruz recommended that the city move its offices and then put the current building up for sale.

Hewitt-Cruz told commissioners a preliminary analysis showed that moving to the Citizens Gas building on North Main Street would result in a 75 percent reduction in utility expenses for City Hall. She also said that former city administrator Chad Baugh had raised the idea with DTE Energy, and that the company was open to the idea of selling that building.

If city offices remain housed in the former Bank of Lenawee building, where

they have been located for the past 18 years, many offices should be realigned for efficiency and employee safety, she said.

Hewitt-Cruz told commissioners it is standard practice for municipalities to provide physical barriers between staff and the public. She suggested securing the front entrance and redirecting traffic to the rear of the building, where three service windows could be installed to provide customer service for the building

department and public utility clerks, as well as installing secure walls and a keycode entry system and requiring badge access to enter staff-only areas.

She further proposed keeping Community Development and utilities billing staff on the building’s first floor, relocating other staff to the second floor, and only retaining the blueprint room on the third floor, with unused space on the first and third floors then being made available for leasing.

IN BRIEF Law group honors Parker with Liberty Bell Award ADRIAN — The Lenawee County Bar Association presented Adrian Public Schools superintendent Nate Parker with its second annual Liberty Bell Award on May 1.

The award honors people who make significant contributions to justice and liberty. The group noted the initiatives Parker Nate Parker has championed at Adrian Public Schools, including “Portrait of a Graduate,” which focuses on preparing students for life after high school by emphasizing both college readiness and vocational skills, and Diploma Plus, which seeks to have every student graduate with credentials beyond their high school diploma.

The Bar Association further noted Parker’s highlighting of diversity as one of Adrian’s greatest assets and his advocacy for a learning environment built on diversity, dignity, and unity.

Murphy to serve as officer of statewide board ADRIAN — Lenawee County administrator Kim Murphy was elected as an officer of the Michigan Association of County Administrative Officers board on May 21.

Murphy will serve as secretary of the board during the term Kim Murphy that begins Oct. 1.

The group assists county administrators in serving their communities through networking, education, and professional development.

SHU students reflect on school’s closure

ADRIAN — Siena Heights University began in 1919 as an all-women’s college and made strides academically, communally, and in athletics. In the summer of 2025, Siena Heights’ board of trustees announced that the 2025-2026 academic year would be its last.

Over the last year or so, the community came together not only to appreciate Siena but to figure out how to carry forward its legacy.

“I think that SHU is really important to the community,” said senior Clara Losey.

“So many alumni and people from the community have told me how sad they are to see the school close. This is home for a lot of people, and it’s hard to let go of a place like this.”

Siena Heights has continued making a positive impact on the Lenawee community and its students well into its closing year. Many people call this “The Siena Effect.” Constantly seeking to create more competent, purposeful, and ethical students, Siena stresses its mission statement and works to make a difference in students’ lives. The goal of an education here “in a nutshell it is to be a good person who cares about others and the world in general,” said senior Jocie Berry. “That is the real legacy.”

Berry added that Siena Heights cares not only about students as individuals but possesses “a sort of closeness that is very unique to a smaller school.”

“I also think in general the Siena environment like our coaches, professors, staff, they all care about our individual success and don’t simply view us as a number or somebody that’s bringing a bunch of money in for them,” she said. “They actually care about what happens to us after Siena.”

Despite the university shutting down, the Siena Heights population has not missed a beat in making this year its best, according to Berry, but there have been differences too.

“Campus has been so different from past years,” she said. “There used to be hundreds of people when I first got here.”

As the year has gone on, fewer people have stayed the course. But, fewer people has not decreased the energy or the love.

“We are all making it the best year because it is Siena’s last,” Berry said.

This closing has not only revealed how many people love SHU but how much they love each other.

“I think that people have always been close at Siena but now, like we used to hang out once a month and now everybody wants to hang out 24/7

Although Siena is closing, its legacy will live on. Students understand that simply being a part of Siena makes them better people.

“My professors believed in me even when I may not have believed in myself,” Losey said. “We really became a family, and I am truly grateful that I was a part of something so special.”

This perspective and the Siena effect comes from a “long line of very strong women.”

“I think that the Adrian Dominican Sisters will keep the memory of Siena alive for as long as they exist so I am not

worried about people not knowing about Siena and what it meant to all of us,” Berry said.

The Siena legacy contains a closeness and an energy that is unique to this school specifically. Because of the close knit atmosphere students keep friendships with professors and students from first year simply because they remember going through a transformation when coming here and that “just being here makes you a better person, and each and every one of us can spread that wherever we go next.

“Siena will always be home for anyone who spent time here,” Losey said.

“Nothing can change that. Once a Saint, always a Saint.”

Freshman Lydia Fenner said she wished she would have been able to attend SHU for her entire collegiate career.

“This year was special for me because this is my first year in college,” Fenner said. “Yes, the school shutting down is super upsetting, but it gave me opportunities to make closer friendships and more memories with amazing people. I wish I had the chance to attend Siena Heights longer, but I take this year and hold it close to my heart and thank everyone who made this year the best year possible.”

It’s safe to say students and faculty value and commemorate Siena Heights University for what it was and what it will continue to be. As St. Catherine of Siena said, “Be who God meant for you to be, and you will set the world on fire.”

Roundabout being built at Occidental and Valley RAISIN TWP. — With construction now underway on Occidental Highway’s second roundabout, motorists accustomed to taking Valley Road and Occidental between Adrian and Tecumseh must use alternate routes.

The curve where Valley intersects with Occidental will be closed to traffic through Sept. 11.

The first roundabout on Occidental — at Sutton Road — was built in 2020. The intent of both the first roundabout and the new one is to improve safety and ease traffic flow.

Occidental Highway is currently closed for the construction of a roundabout at the corner of Occidental and Valley.

Work underway on left turn signal at corner of U.S. 223 and Division ADRIAN — The Michigan Department of Transportation started work at the beginning of May on changes to the intersection of Division Street and U.S. 223.

A left turn signal is being installed for traffic coming south on Division Street and turning onto U.S. 223.

The project was approved two years ago after an MDOT traffic study concluded that a left turn signal was now warranted. A previous study, in 2018, had ended up not recommending a signal.

The target date for completion is July 2. Drivers should expect intermittent lane closures until then.

LLEAD offers scholarships in effort to boost number of bilingual notaries ADRIAN — Latino Leaders for Equity, Advocacy and Development Adrian (LLEAD Adrian) is announcing the launch of its Notary Scholarship Program. The new scholarship aims to increase the number of bilingual notaries in the local area to better serve the community.

The scholarship is open to Lenawee County residents who are at least 18 years old and bilingual in a spoken language, American Sign Language, or who are Native American tribal members. LLEAD Adrian will select five recipients who are motivated to provide Notary Public services to the community. Scholarship recipients will receive a $356 scholarship to cover the cost of a designated notary package and associated filing fees.

Aligned with LLEAD Adrian’s four focal points — Equity, Advocacy,

Development, and Community — the organization believes that this scholarship will provide a more equitable access to a high-demand service, advocacy for underserved populations, creates opportunities for professional development, and strengthens community resources through expanded access to bilingual notary services.

To apply, applicants must complete and return the Notary Scholarship application and participate in an interview with members of the LLEAD Adrian board. Applications can be found at bit.ly/LLEADAdrianNotary or by contacting LLEAD Adrian directly.

New millage for Clinton library passes CLINTON — Voters in the Clinton area approved a new millage for the Clinton Township Public Library on May 5.

The 1-mill levy is expected to generate about $167,000 per year initially. It will fund general library operations in addition to a perpetual millage that was enacted by voters in 1968. The new operating levy is for 10 years.

The total was 379 votes for the proposal to 285 against.

County has funds available for home repairs ADRIAN — Lenawee County is launching a home improvement partnership program to help low-to moderate-income residents make critical home repairs and improvements that support safe, stable housing and strengthen neighborhoods across the county.

The program is funded by a grant from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority.

The total project budget is $1.5 million, with funding expected to support up to 75 homeowner improvement projects throughout Lenawee County.

The program will be administered by the Community Action Agency.

Eligible projects may include: n Roof replacements and repairs. n HVAC and heating system improvements. n Window and door replacements. n Siding repairs. n Accessibility improvements. n Other health and safety-related home repairs.

RIDGEWAY TWP. CAR-MOTORCYCLE CRASH INJURES TWO: On the morning of May 26, Lenawee County sheriff’s deputies responded to the intersection of Ridge and Britton highways for a serious crash. The driver of a 2005 Mercury Marquis was traveling north, turned into a driveway on Ridge Highway, and collided with a Yamaha motorcycle traveling south. The motorcyclist, a 20-year-old Saline man, was wearing a helmet. He was taken to the University of Michigan hospital. Duos from Clinton and Hudson take MVP honors; Tecumseh girls break 4x100-meter relay record

SAND CREEK — A pair of Hudson seniors and a couple of Clinton underclassmen, along with a recordbreaking effort from Tecumseh in the girls’ 4x100-meter Relay, highlighted the annual Lenawee County All-County Track and Field Meet on May 26 at Sand Creek High School.

Hudson seniors Ellie Loar and Colton Natale were the field event MVPs, while sophomore Ella Claus and freshman Wyatt Dehring from Clinton received MVP honors for the track events.

Tecumseh’s Holly Woods, Gwen Echter, Kazariyah Garland, and Lillian Harden captured the 4x100m relay in a personal-best 50.23 and surpassed the former mark of Tecumseh’s 50.64 from 2022.

The county meet served as the final tune-up for the Indians, who were looking to tighten their efforts before the Division 2 state meet at Hamilton High School at the end of May. “We wanted to work on our handoffs today,” said Tecumseh coach Wes Harden. “It’s a matter of just working on those handoffs, getting one last hard workout in, and getting our heads right and starting to feel a little more confident with each other.”

Dehring won the 100-meter dash in 11.11 and the 200-meter in 22.70 on his way to the meet MVP title. He also placed first in the long jump at 21 feet, 4 inches.

“I felt good,” said Dehring, whose team competed at the MITCA meet at Manton High School on May 23, where he also won the 100-meter. “I was sore from Saturday. It was really hot, and I was burnt out, but I came out here and still gave it my best.”

Fellow MVP Claus captured the 200-meter in 26.75 and the 400-meter in 59.53.

“I’m really thankful for it,” Claus said of the chance to compete in the county meet. “It’s a good opportunity to run against other people, who are also really good athletes. I just appreciate this opportunity.”

Loar won the shot put with a personal-best 38’5,” and also won the discus, just missing a best effort by two inches and finishing at 122’6”.

ADRIAN — As the youngest of Jamie and Deb Salenbien’s four children, Jaxon Salenbien watched his older siblings dominate in athletics.

His sisters, Dani (Hillsdale College) and Bree (Gonzaga, Ball State), excelled on the basketball court, while his older brother, Tyler, excelled in football and basketball.

But when his time arrived, everyone was watching him.

Salenbien completed his final campaign at Lenawee Christian as Lenawee County’s all-time leading scorer and announced his commitment to continue his academic and athletic career at Spring Arbor University.

“They’re pretty intertwined with our high school,” said Salenbien, noting the strong connection between faith and family at each institution. “Their community is really similar to ours at Lenawee Christian.”

LCS coach Matt Summer watched Salenbien grow as a player and develop into the young man he is today during his varsity career.

“Jaxon is not only an exceptional talent but also a young man of character,” Summer said. “He had a huge impact on the basketball program at LCS. He raised the standard for our program and led our team for four years.”

During his career, Salenbien developed into a strong scorer.

Eventually, he surpassed Adrian’s Stevie Elam for the all-time Lenawee County scoring record with 2,128 points.

HUDSON — Once Hudson sophomore Maci Godfrey starts something, there is no slowing her down. From acting in high school theater productions to competing as a member of three varsity sports, she goes full speed ahead.

“Once Maci has an assignment, she starts working on it and doesn’t procrastinate,” Leslie Godfrey said of her daughter. “She always gives her best effort and has high expectations for herself.”

Her latest endeavor is serving a two-year term on the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Student Advisory Council. Godfrey learned of her appointment on May 1.

“My mom was the one who came across the online application and showed it to me,” Godfrey said. “I immediately knew I wanted to apply.

This position aligned with all of my passions.”

Godfrey had to complete the online application process, showcasing her 4.14 grade point average and highlighting her athletic accomplishments. She completed short-answer questions about herself and her interest in the council. When the committee narrowed it down to 20 finalists, Godfrey had a FaceTime interview with Andy Frushour, a senior assistant director for the MHSAA. “I have seen what success a positive culture can bring in sports,” she said. “I want to promote this culture and be a voice for student-athletes in Michigan.”

“One of Maci’s best qualities is that she is a great teammate,” Leslie Godfrey said of her daughter. “She doesn’t care who gets the credit, and she supports everyone on her team. I believe this will also be true when she serves on the council.”

Besides athletics and theater productions, Godfrey is a member of the Rising Scholars program, Student Ambassador Voices, Yearbook Club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

She is also her class’s vice president on the Student Council and was recently inducted into the National Honor Society.

“Maci is the first SAC member that we are aware of, and we are very proud of her selection,” Hudson athletic director Jeremy Beal said. “She is certainly a worthy candidate and a great representative of our district and our area.”

Godfrey will represent not only Hudson, but also all of the school districts in Lenawee, Hillsdale, and Jackson counties during her two-year term.

He broke the scoring record against Hanover-Horton on Feb. 19, as he hit a very deep 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer.

He finished that game with 34 points and 15 rebounds against the Comets in the team’s regular-season finale.

history. It is a testament to Jaxon’s passion for the game, his God-given talent, and his superb work ethic.”

The memory brought a smile to Salenbien’s face as he recalled the shot.

“The student section was great. They rushed the court,” he said.

At the end of the season, Salenbien earned the Division 4 Player of the Year award. He set new LCS program records with 453 assists, 801 field goals, and 449 free throws. Salenbien netted 675 points during the 2025-26 season.

“It’s a matter of finding the balance of what we need and what the situation is,” said Salenbien, who created as much for his teammates as he created for himself on the court.

Salenbien’s unselfish play and ability to create offensively caught the attention of Ryan Cottingham and his staff at Spring Arbor.

“Jaxon stood out to us early in his career with his knack for scoring, basketball IQ, and his competitive

edge,” said Spring Arbor associate head coach Ted Stowe, who views the 6-foot-4 Salenbien as an off-guard next winter.

The Spring Arbor University men’s basketball team competes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The Cougars are a member of the Crossroads League, which includes schools from Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.

“We love that he comes from a highlevel program and has been well coached in his time at LCS, as well as coming from a great family,” said Stowe, who was on staff when Spring Arbor won the NAIA National Championship in 2019.

“He grew as a person, as a basketball player, and as a leader,” Summer said of Salenbien. “It is exciting to see him take the next step in his career and even more exciting that he is going to nearby Spring Arbor University. Our entire school community is excited for the opportunities ahead to see him compete at the next level.”

Godfrey begins her term with other council members during a two-day training session in June.

“As a group, we provide input and feedback that impacts educational athletics,” Godfrey said of her peers’ responsibilities on the council. “We also plan leadership summits and aid

in medal ceremonies and other MHSAA events.

“It is truly an honor being able to represent my class,” she continued. “I will serve my peers during these two years to the best of my ability and prioritize their high school sports experience, so that it is memorable for them.”

ADRIAN — Plans for a drivethrough coffee stand in the southeast corner of the Meijer parking lot were approved at the May 5 Adrian City Planning Commission meeting.

7Brew is a chain of drivethrough coffee stands with more than 600 locations in 38 states. According to the site plan submitted to the planning commission, it would serve beverages such as coffee, smoothies, energy drinks, sparkling waters, and shakes, but would not serve any food. The applicant has an agreement to lease the space from Meijer.

Most of the discussion involved making sure there was enough space to avoid customers’ vehicles stopping along U.S. 223 while lining up. Garrett Small, the civil engineer for the project, said there will be room for 17 cars, more than enough to handle the traffic volume at even the chain’s busiest locations.

Lori Morgan, senior planner with McKenna, the consultant engaged by the city to work on site plan reviews, said her firm’s review found no concerns with the amount of space for cars.

The planning commission voted unanimously to approve the site plan.

Events for college interns planned for this summer ADRIAN — Lenawee County will celebrate its fourth National Intern Day on Thursday, July 30, with a full day of activities designed to connect college interns working across the county.

National Intern Day, observed annually on the last Thursday of July, highlights the contributions that interns make to businesses, nonprofits, and government organizations. Lenawee County’s event recognizes the impact interns have on the local community while encouraging them to build lasting connections and consider Lenawee County as a place to live after graduation.

While the full schedule is still being finalized, this year’s event will include a service project, lunch, recreation and networking activities, local guest speakers, and opportunities for interns to connect with one another and community leaders throughout the day.

In addition to National Intern Day, event organizers are planning an early summer intern event on June 11 in downtown Adrian, offering another opportunity for interns to connect in a relaxed, social setting. More details will be announced soon. Interns who register for National Intern Day will receive updates and invitations to this summer mixer.

COURT NEWS SUSPECT IN DAKOTA COURINGTON HIT-AND-RUN MUST STAY TETHERED: An Adrian woman accusing of striking an Adrian teen with her car and then fleeing the scene will have to continue wearing an electronic tether as a condition of being free on bond, Judge Michael Olsaver ruled on May 13. The attorney for Felisha Madison, 40, said that she was undergoing medical treatment involving her leg and the tether’s presence was “exacerbating her condition and making treatment very, very difficult.” However, Olsaver said the GPS tether requirement is still appropriate, citing previous curfew compliance issues. He said he would be willing to look at the matter again if Madison’s attorney can provide substantiation from a doctor. Madison is accused of leaving the scene of an accident after seriously injuring Dakota Courington in August 2024.

SUPREME COURT DENIES ADRIAN MAN’S APPEAL: In a 5-2 split decision, the Michigan Supreme Court has denied an appeal from an Adrian man convicted of sexually abusing a young boy more than 18 years ago.

The majority ruled that Joel Kurowicki, 42, failed to show that new evidence uncovered during a post-conviction investigation warranted granting him a new trial.

NO NEW TRIAL FOR FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES SOCCER COACH: There will be no new trial for former Fellowship of Christian Athletes soccer coach Andrew Olnhausen, who was convicted of sexually abusing a player. Olnhausen’s attorney, Mark Linton claimed that a private investigator hired after the case was over had uncovered “a pervasive pattern of undisclosed overlapping relationships involving jurors, the complainant, and the lead investigator,” the cumulative nature of which, he said “destroyed the appearance of impartiality required the by Sixth Amendment.” Those overlapping relationships, Linton claimed, centered around church, a golf club, and other civic and social events. He said the jurors “went to the same church as the complainant and the detective, and they were out to get Mr. Olnhausen.” However, Melissa Palepu from the Michigan Attorney General’s Office said the defense had provided no evidence of juror misconduct, and Judge Michael Olsaver agreed.

Olnhausen was convicted in July 2025 of having an abusive sexual relationship with a soccer player beginning when the victim was 12 years old and continuing for about four years.

PRISON SENTENCE UPHELD IN MOTEL ATTACK: The Michigan Court of Appeals has upheld the 20- to 30-year prison sentence that a Toledo man received for a brutal attack more than four years ago at a Brooklyn motel. The court rejected 39-year-old Nicholas Stamper’s claims that he was erroneously given an enhanced sentence for the attack, which left the victim with life-threatening injuries.

The appeals court judges said that videos of Stamper attacking the unconscious victim demonstrated “beyond question his excessive brutality directed against the victim.” Stamper and the victim had been staying at the Brooklyn Super 8 motel while working on a construction project nearby.

SKELTON EXAMINATION DELAYED UNTIL LATE SUMMER: Due to the large amount of evidence to review, preliminary examination has been delayed until late summer for a Morenci man charged with three counts of open murder and three of tampering with evidence stemming from the disappearance of his three sons more than 15 years ago. Proceedings in the case against John Skelton are now set to begin Aug. 24.

Adrian Steel from page A1 For example, it just unveiled the Open Bed Service Truck system, a modular cap that, thanks to Adrian Steel’s lean manufacturing process, “can ship on a pallet in five days,” Jackson said. Similar products from other companies might takes as long as 20 weeks to produce, he added.

The company also recently launched a roll-up door for truck caps, joining hatch door and barn door styles in the lineup.

Each type of equipment Adrian Steel makes is designed with the end user in mind. “It’s not about a product” as such, Jackson said. “It’s about the solutions we create for our mobile trades. … It’s about improving the efficiency of these mobile professionals and helping them be safe on the job.”

Adrian Steel traces its more than seven-decade history back to a former football player named Robert Westfall.

Westfall was a standout player on both the collegiate and pro levels. Nicknamed “Bullet Bob,” he was an All-American fullback and team captain for the University of Michigan Wolverines and then served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. When his military service was complete, he took his considerable football skills to the Detroit Lions, for whom he played from 1944 to 1947 and earned All-Pro honors in 1945.

After he retired, he and his wife, Suzy, moved to Adrian, where he went to work at his brother-in-law’s business, a glorified junkyard on College Avenue called the Adrian Salvage Co. But he didn’t leave football behind entirely. He coached the Adrian High School and Adrian Catholic Central football teams as well as the local semipro team, The Big Reds. That team went 19-4-3 between 1948 and 1950 and in the 1950 season was not only unbeaten, but also unscored upon.

In 1953, Westfall decided to branch out into a business that handled structural steel, steel fabrication, and other niche endeavors. Even though he knew almost nothing about such things, he did know about overcoming personal obstacles and was confident he could learn the rest of what it would take.

With the help of U-M’s legendary football coach Fritz Crisler, who was a father figure to him and who would become the company’s first board chair, Adrian Steel started a steady rise.

Two years after its founding, the company moved from its original 41- by 50-foot building at 421 College Ave. to a new location at 235 W. Maple Ave. Just two years after that, in 1957, it moved to a 14,292-square-foot facility at the site of its current home on James Street.

The youngest of Westfall’s three children, Harley, took over the company upon his father’s death and oversaw a period of major growth in product offerings and sales revenue.

Harley stepped aside as president in 2006 and became chairman of the board, but a number of factors led him to return to the leadership in 2020 — bringing the employee-oriented philosophy he had learned from his father back with him.

“It’s very much our culture,” Jackson said of that philosophy. “It’s very much ingrained in us that it’s a family environment. It’s always felt like that.”

Adrian Steel employees voted the company as a Detroit Free Press Top Work Place in 2025. Many of those workers have been with the company for a long time — 30, 40, or even close to 50 years in some cases.

Jackson himself started out on the shop floor 31 years ago, taking on progressively more responsible roles over time. He moved to Kansas City to become general manager of the company’s facility there, and then in 2023 returned to Adrian to become chief

operating officer before being named CEO earlier this year.

“It’s pretty much all I’ve known,” he said of working for Adrian Steel.

Besides being one of the region’s major employers, the company works hard to give back to the community it calls home. Its charitable giving committee allocates funds to many local organizations, and its community efforts include an annual food drive that in one recent year alone donated 92,000 pounds of goods to the county’s food banks.

“Harley always said it was a two-way street,” Jackson said. “We benefit from having a great community to pull from.”

Adrian Garden Club marks its centennial

ADRIAN — Since 1926, the Adrian Garden Club has worked to beautify the city of Adrian by creating both public and private garden spaces. This year marks the 100-year anniversary of the group’s efforts to make Adrian a more beautiful place to live.

To honor the 100-year anniversary, the Adrian Garden Club is planning a Centennial Celebration Party at the Stubnitz Environmental Education Center at Adrian’s Heritage Park in August. The club will host all of the chapters of the Michigan Garden Clubs Inc. District IIA, the district to which they belong.

Another part of the anniversaryyear celebration is a display of archival newspaper clippings and club handbooks at the Lenawee Historical Museum. The first club handbook was published in 1930, four years after the club organized, and listed Mrs. H.W, Lamb as the president. In 1931, the garden club was federated as a charter member of Michigan Garden Clubs. It is currently a member of National Garden Clubs as well.

Cheryl Clymer Lynch is the current president of the club, which has 30 members. She is hoping to bring more members into the group. There are no real criteria for joining the club, she said.

ADRIAN — Patricia Kuney and Norman Long first met as students at Adrian High School in the years after World War II. Pat was a senior. Norm was a year behind her.

They married on June 23, 1951, at the United Brethren Church, beginning a life together that has stretched across 75 years, three homes, two children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, business ownership, military service, travel, deep loss, and the kind of ordinary daily devotion that becomes extraordinary only when viewed across three-quarters of a century.

“Time goes fast,” Pat said with a smile.

On the day of this interview, the Longs were sitting in matching dark blue recliners in the small living room of their new apartment at Hampton Manor.

They had moved in only a week earlier, trading their longtime family home on Cadmus Road for the convenience and community of assisted living.

“Everything is done for us,” Pat said.

“They clean, the meals are served in the dining room, and there are activities.”

That is a big change for Pat, who was still putting dinner on the table until the day before they moved in.

“I cooked up until last week,” she said.

The move also offers support for both of them. Norm is dealing with Parkinson’s disease and benefits from physical therapy. Pat is legally blind, making the daily help and companionship of community life a blessing.

Still, they have not entirely let go of home.

“We still have our house on Cadmus Road,” Pat said. “Norm goes over and cuts the grass. He really enjoys mowing the lawn.”

Ask them the secret to a marriage that has lasted 75 years, and the answer comes simply.

“Don’t walk away from an argument,” Norm added. “Care for and take care of each other.”

That friendship began, Pat said, with Norm’s quiet nature.

“My mom used to say Norm was such a quiet guy that it took me six months to get him in the house, and then he never left,” she said, smiling.

Her husband credits the example they both had growing up.

“We both had good parents,” he said.

“They were good teachers.”

Norm worked as a sales representative for U & I Supply in Jackson, then worked for Beal Supply in Adrian. He later purchased the company and started Industrial Mill Supply Corp. He sold tool parts — drill bits, taps and other supplies — to local factories.

At the time, Pat said, “there were factories all over Adrian.”

New boutique consignment shop, Kindred Threads, opens in Adrian

ADRIAN — Therese Parker is all about a deal. That passion led her to opening Kindred Threads, a consignment shop in Adrian.

“I’m all about a deal, a thrift, a garage sale, anything that’s not full price,” she said.

Kindred Threads, located at 810 W. Maumee St. in Adrian, is a boutique-style consignment shop that features high-end, trendy clothing that “isn’t necessarily what you might find in a thrift shop”, Parker said.

The opportunity to open the 2,000-square-foot store presented itself when the building became available. The clothing comes in sizes from kids to adults.

Kindred Threads carries clothing and accessories such as purses, sunglasses and shoes. Prices range from $2.99 per item and up.

“It depends on the value of the item and what brand it is,” Parker said.

Currently, consignments are taken by appointment only. There is a limit of two totes, laundry baskets or reusable shopping bags per person at a time. Clothing in trash bags will not be accepted. The clothing needs to be freshly washed Therese Parker is the owner of Kindred Threads, with no holes or stains.

All sales are done in-store only. 810 W. Maumee St. Parker hopes to eventually open a website to have a “sell all over” sales strategy. She also has plans to eventually create her own line of candles and clothing under the Kindred Threads brand. Opening a home-furnishings store at a different location is also something Parker is considering for her future business plans.

Parker wants people to know that she takes the store seriously.

“It’s definitely a passion and not a hobby,” she said. “I’m going to put my whole life in this store.”

Being a small business owner is a family tradition for Parker. Her mother, Carri Griesinger, and both grandmothers, Sheila Austin and Ruby Crowell, are owners of The Heat Wave salon in Adrian.

“It kind of runs in the family,” she said.

New store, 5Seventeen Kicks, offers shoes in downtown Adrian

ADRIAN — High-end footwear has a new home in Adrian. 5Seventeen Kicks, a shoe store located in downtown Adrian, kicked off on May 1.

The store, owned by Tyler Guerrero and Nativity Fiedler, features both new and used high-end athletic shoes.

Customers can come in to buy new shoes, or can bring in their used shoes for cash or store credit.

For used shoes, Guerrero prices the shoes based on the style of the shoe, its original value, and how much he can sell it for after he cleans them. He cleans the shoes by taking out the soles and laces, and cleans the surface of the shoes by “just scrubbing them down hard.” He also has a UV light he uses to lighten up the white.

“Once you break down the shoe and clean it, you can bring it back to life almost any time,” he said.

Guerrero is open to a variety of brands when he’s buying shoes for resale.

“I don’t turn down anything — Pumas, Adidas, Nike, Jordan,” he said.

“I just got into New Balance and Brooks running shoes,” he continued, to broaden his customer appeal. He also carries sandals and walking shoes. Shoe sizes can range from infant sizes up to men’s size 15.

Part of the draw of used shoes is that the customer can save money off the cost of buying high-end shoes new.

“We’re affordable,” Fiedler said.

“We have $5 shoes out there, and we have shoes that cost $200,” Guerrero said.

“If you don’t want an expensive pair of shoes, come down and see what we’ve got in our used section.”

The store also offers clothing like T-shirts and hoodies. Merchandise is posted on Facebook almost daily.

Guerrero got interested in opening a store from buying shoes for himself. He once bought two pairs of shoes as part of a raffle. He kept one pair and resold the other. He made $50 and realized that he could make more.

“I’ve been reselling shoes for two years now — it’s going on three years,” he continued.

Pop-culture dead end “Good morning!” says my beloved wife Marsha as she steps out of the bedroom.

“Top of the morning to you, too,” I say.

“How did you sleep?”

“Good!”

I already knew that because I’ve been up for an hour and a half while she slept.

“It’s puzzling,” I say.

“What’s puzzling?” she asks.

“My puzzles.”

“Oh.” The morning routine. I make a small pot of coffee, fix a bowl of cereal with some fruit and sit at the counter having breakfast while working three puzzles.

First comes Wordle. Then comes Quordle. Finally, a game of Sudoku.

I think of it as kick-starting my sleepaddled brain.

I’m not alone. Seven of us in the family work the two word puzzles and then share our scores via email.

It’s a light touch of family unity, every day. As I look at the messages from my daughter, my sister, my niece, my sonin-law and two cousins, I think of them, even if the message only includes the scores.

Other times, there might be a message along with the scores. This morning, for example, I learned from one of the cousins that she learned one of her daughters is pregnant, and the soldier husband of her other daughter just returned from Baghdad.

Hallelujah!

My niece is up early every morning walking on her treadmill while somehow doing her word puzzles as she strides along. Her emails usually come along shortly after 5 a.m.

Sometimes my on-call Doctor Daughter doesn’t get around to doing her puzzles until just before midnight and then does the next day’s puzzle a few minutes later. I am quite certain that unlike my treadmilling niece she is not multitasking doing surgery at the same time she’s completing the puzzles.

My sister, the matriarch, reports on the birds at her feeder and the quality of the sunrise over the lake where she lives.

Oddly, these puzzle-score reports are not for competition.

Even before retirement allowed me the luxury of frittering away perfectly good minutes doing puzzles, I did crosswords. I like words. I like stirring up my brain. Now, I rarely do crosswords.

It’s not that I don’t like doing them — it’s just that I don’t know anything about pop culture.

Still, from time to time I give one a try.

“Doja Cat’s biggest hit,” is the clue.

What?

I look up Doja Cat and learn that it is the stage name of a rap singer whose real name is Amal Ratna Zandile Diamini.

Had the clue used her real name instead of Doja Cat I still would have been a poor kitten lost in the woods, thankfully far, far away from any rap music.

On TV, I see the promotions for tonight’s guests on various late-night shows.

Typically, I never recognize any of them.

“Have you heard sombr?

Homewrecker’s latest?” says a young friend.

“Say what?” I respond.

“It’s Number 19 on Billboard,” he explains. “Awesome!”

“Say what?” I respond.

“Never mind. Do you want to go to a movie tonight? ‘Is God Is’ is playing,” he says.

“Say what?” I respond.

“You’re hopeless.”

“Wordle, Quordle and Sudoku are my time killers,” I say.

“Say what?” says my young friend.

Fallen peace officers honored in ceremony at Oakwood Cemetery ADRIAN — The 2026 Lenawee County Law Enforcement Memorial Service was held at Oakwood Cemetery on May 15 to honor officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community.

The keynote speaker was David Harvey, deputy director of the International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement Standards and Training of Michigan. Harvey reminded the community that police officers face unique cumulative and acute trauma, driving a critical need for confidential, culturally competent, and proactive PTSD care.

Father Thomas Helfrich offered the invocation and benediction for the ceremony.

Summer literacy camps will help kids have fun while improving reading skills Free events will take place from 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays, for five weeks beginning June 16 ADRIAN — The ProMedica Adrian Ebeid Neighborhood Promise is collaborating with the Lenawee Intermediate School District (LISD) and the Boys & Girls Club of Lenawee to bring Lit Pop-Ups to the ProMedica Adrian Ebeid Center located at Comstock for a third year.

The ProMedica Adrian Ebeid Center, located at 801 E. Maumee St., will host Lit Pop-Ups on Tuesday evenings for five weeks, beginning June 16 and running through July 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. Each student will receive a book to take home, along with a carryout dinner each week.

“The curriculum and materials provided by LISD are excellent. Each week, participating children complete projects and focus on a key word or topic,” said Lynne Punnett, manager of community resilience for the ProMedica

Adrian Ebeid Neighborhood Promise.

“While we primarily serve students in kindergarten through fifth grade, older students are also welcome. They often support younger participants with writing, crafts and hands-on projects, and we always appreciate their involvement.”

Students rotate through five learning stations, beginning with a read-aloud that introduces the theme of the week.

They then move to a creative arts and crafts makerspace, a STEM station and the ever-popular tinker station, before concluding in the writing lab, where they reinforce what they’ve learned.

The Lit Pop-Ups play an important role in helping students reduce summer learning loss and strengthen writing skills, an area where county data shows room for improvement. Staff from the Boys & Girls Club will be on site each

week to provide support and will also offer the popular literacy pop-ups during their daytime summer programming for club members.

Registration is encouraged but not required; walk-ins are welcome. Parents may stay but are not required to do so, as long as students are registered and emergency contact information is provided. ProMedica Adrian Ebeid Center staff, Boys & Girls Club staff, Foster Grandparents and backgroundchecked community volunteers will be on hand to support students as they learn and have fun.

Gleaner offers annual flag exchange ADRIAN — Gleaner Life Insurance Society will help Lenawee County residents prepare for patriotic events by hosting an exchange of worn and weathered American flags on Wednesday, June 10.

The event will help residents have a new American flag ready for Flag Day on June 14 as well as the Fourth of July, America’s 250th birthday.

Lenawee County residents are welcome to exchange one old flag per person for one new flag. To obtain enough flags with either grommets or pole sleeves, residents seeking a flag must register online at www.gleanerlife. org/flagexchange by June 5.

The June 10 flag exchange will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of Gleaner’s Home Office at 5200 W. U.S. 223 in Adrian. The exchange is free, but donations will be accepted.

Donations will be double matched up to $2,500 by Gleaner Life and the Joseph Wildberg Fund for Veterans in support of Habitat for Humanity’s Veterans Build Fund.

CPC of Lenawee plans annual 5K

Cherished Companions veterinary practice now open in Adrian

ADRIAN — Cherished Companions Animal Clinic, owned by Dr. Dawn Marcus, is now open to provide routine care for dogs and cats. The clinic, located in Adrian, opened on March 2.

Marcus has 20 years of experience in veterinary medicine. She earned both her undergraduate and veterinary school degrees from the University of Florida.

She started her career working on horses for two years in Illinois before moving to Blissfield to work at Blissfield Veterinary Service in 2008. Marcus said that the move allowed her to work in a mixed animal practice, with dogs and cats as well as horses.

For the past three years, she worked in Wauseon, Ohio, before deciding to open Cherished Companions Animal Clinic.

The practice offers routine surgeries, spays, neuters and mass removals, as well as wellness care.

“We try to focus on preventative care, and finding and preventing problems,” Marcus said.

Marcus has a staff of four people — Jayme Miller, Angie Koester, Sam Dermyer and Rylee Echelbarger — working with her. She said that all of the employees, including herself, have worked together in the past and they are happy to be working together again.

“We’re family and we’d love to see your family,” she said.

The focus of Cherished Companions is to provide low-stress visits. The staff uses different handling techniques that are good for the more nervous patients.

“People are nervous, dogs are nervous,” Marcus said. “We just want to put everyone at ease and just help everyone relax and get through the visit and be happy when they leave.”

“We’re calm, relaxed,” she continued.

“We really want to make sure that your pet and you have the best experience.”

Marcus said that the common problems she sees in her practice this time of year are fleas and ticks on dogs.

Preventive medicine can be used for lime disease from ticks and heartworm.

Problems with cats this time of year, she said, come from stray cats that come into heat and having multiple litters of kittens.

In that case, she suggests trapping the cat and having it spayed or neutered if possible.

Cherished Companions does not have boarding services or overnight monitoring. Marcus refers cases where surgeries might require overnight monitoring to another clinic rather than doing them on her premises.

Youth triathlon among events supported by Adrian Kiwanians The Annual Splash & Dash event is coming to Adrian again this summer. The swim, bike and run event is open to kids from ages 3-14.

Support from the Kiwanis Club of Adrian is a big part of making the event happen. Dusty Steele is heading up the Kiwanis Club’s involvement in this year’s event. He got involved with Splash & Dash when he was on the board of directors for the YMCA of Lenawee County and worked with Tom MacNaughton, who was also a board member at the time. MacNaughton still organizes the event for the Frank & Shirley Dick Family YMCA, now part of the YMCA of Greater Toledo.

The Splash & Dash was started by Russ Dempsey and Gregg Iddings, former members of the Kiwanis Club of Adrian who both had a keen interest in physical fitness. Dempsey was a triathlete and Ironman competitor. Iddings was an Ironman competitor as well.

“They had a passion,” Steele said.

Amid rising concerns about childhood obesity, Iddings and Dempsey thought the Splash & Dash activity would be fun for the kids.

Kiwanis Club members work as volunteers to help the kids get ready for the race in the staging area and to cheer them on throughout Splash & Dash.

Kiwanians are also a big part of ensuring the safety of the participants during the event and provide a finish line structure at the end of the race.

SERVICE CLUB ROUNDUP

For the Kiwanis Club, Steele said, the event is “right up our alley.”

“The Kiwanis has always had an affection for the Y because Kiwanis has an affection for kids,” he said of the collaboration between the two groups.

Tom MacNaughton has worked, through the Y, to coordinate Splash & Dash for the past 19 years. He said the Kiwanis Club helps both as a financial sponsor and as a group of volunteers on the day of the event.

“They always tell me they like to be helpful in addition to the financial support,” MacNaughton said.

The Splash & Dash Youth Triathlon will be held at Adrian High School on July 11. Participants must register by July 10. LAND & WATER Creating a pollinator friendly landscape FRANKLIN TWP. — Hidden Lake Gardens will present a program titled “A Year in Blooms: Through a Pollinator’s Eyes” at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 9.

The presentation will address how to create a pollinator-friendly landscape using native plants. Gardeners will learn how gardening choices can support bees, butterflies, birds, and overall ecosystem health.

The speaker will be Vincent Ste. Marie of Windy Rock Farm & Nursery, who specializes in Michigan native plants.

Ste. Marie is a longtime advocate for pollinator-friendly gardening. A former chemical-free beekeeper, he and his family now operate a specialty nursery that focuses on Michigan native plants that support pollinators and healthy ecosystems.

Facing labor shortages, farm groups push for immigration changes

Farmers are searching for immigration reform like a lost desert wanderer scanning the horizon for water. But the oasis always turns out to be a mirage.

Will this finally be the year for meaningful reform?

While President Trump’s total deportation numbers are similar to Biden’s, his administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration has included a noteworthy increase in ICE apprehensions within the country, and border crossings have fallen sharply.

The policy has throttled the flow of unauthorized workers who long have helped meet agriculture labor needs, leaving farmers in an acute pinch. They say they can’t find enough local workers, and that red tape and hurdles thwart legal immigration.

If this sounds like a distant problem to you, consider that a migrant was probably involved in producing the food on your table.

“A lot of the milk that we drink and the food that we eat comes from, and is touched by, people who are working really hard, but aren’t U.S. citizens,” says Michelle Ramirez-White, government

relations director for the Wisconsin Farmers Union.

A few lawmakers have joined industry advocates and farmers in pushing for solutions. Federal bills on the horizon could offer some movement, even as the appetite for full-scale reform remains scarce.

For farmers, the H-2A visa program, which allows seasonal workers into the country to help out with the harvest, is the most important point of reform. The program is widely seen as cumbersome, tied up in bureaucratic delays, and too stingy on the number of workers allowed to come (although it has been rapidly expanding, according to government data). It’s also essentially useless to dairy farmers, who need year-round help.

A lack of immigration reform has defined American policy for decades, but “cows still need to be milked,” says Hans Breitenmoser, who has about 460 dairy cows on his Wisconsin farm. “It is this sort of great big fat open secret that everybody understands, that there’s tons of undocumented folks working in production agriculture, and specifically the dairy industry.”

It’s not only dairy farmers feeling the need for reforms.

Bill Powers, president of the Delaware Farm Bureau, says better processing is

needed to speed up the H-2A system, and more workers are needed overall.

“It’s just not enough.”

On his farm near Harrington, Delaware, Dave Marvel grows about 50 to 100 acres of watermelons, depending on the year. This crop thrives in southern Delaware’s sandy soil, and migrant workers can often be seen in the fields in the fall. Marvel says watermelon growers, like dairy farmers, could benefit from workers allowed to stay in the country for longer. If they were, he might be able to hire H-2A workers for planting instead of just harvesting.

Government surveys indicate about 42% of the estimated 2 million farmworkers in the United States are undocumented. Hundreds of thousands of others work in meatpacking plants, grocery stores and restaurants, facing low wages, few rights, and at times exploitative and hazardous conditions.

The Trump administration’s decision to rescind humanitarian parole programs have left many more immigrants undocumented and out of work, further reducing the available workforce.

Alzheimer’s support in Lenawee County Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, Lewy body dementia, and memory loss are diagnoses that bring many strong emotions. People may feel disbelief, sadness, frustration, fear, or confusion.

Patients and families can quickly feel overwhelmed by the changes these diagnoses bring. Finding information, resources, and support may also feel difficult at first. The good news is that Lenawee County has many partners ready to support families and loved ones along the journey.

After receiving a diagnosis, many families want to learn more about the disease and what to expect. With more than 100 forms of dementia, searching for information can feel overwhelming.

A good place to start is the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org or by calling 800-272-3900. Although the organization is named after the most common form of dementia, it provides support for all dementia diagnoses. The helpline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for questions, information, or simply someone to talk with.

Another helpful resource is Positive Approach to Care, founded by dementia care educator and occupational therapist Teepa Snow. The organization offers education, training, and tools to help caregivers better support people living with dementia. More information can be found at www.teepasnow.com.

Many caregivers find that joining a support group helps them feel less alone and better prepared to care for a loved one. Lenawee County offers both in-person and virtual support groups.

The Lenawee Department on Aging hosts a caregiver support group on the first Monday of each month at 2 p.m. for all family caregivers. A men’s caregiver support group is held on the first Friday of each month at 2 p.m. Both groups

Cambrian Assisted Living and Memory Care, located at 333 N. Occidental Highway in Tecumseh, also hosts an Alzheimer’s Association support group on the fourth Thursday of each month at 3 p.m. The group is open to all caregivers and family members and is facilitated by a certified Positive Approach to Care educator. In addition, Lenawee Medical Care Facility is working to add another support group in the near future.

For those who prefer virtual support, WellWise Services offers online caregiver support groups. A general caregiver support group meets on the first Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m., and a dementia caregiver support group meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 5 p.m. More information and meeting links can be found at www. wellwiseservices.org under the caregiver section.

Professionals who work in dementia care often encourage caregivers to accept help early. While asking for help can feel uncomfortable, support from others can benefit both the caregiver and the loved one receiving care. Help may include meals, household chores, lawn care, transportation, or simply spending time with a loved one. Friends, neighbors, family members, and

community partners can all become part of a caregiver’s support team.

Adult day services can also provide important support. These programs give caregivers time to rest while offering loved ones a safe place to socialize and stay active. Participants can enjoy conversation, games, meals, snacks, and activities designed for their abilities and interests. These programs can improve quality of life for both caregivers and participants. Daybreak Adult Day Services offers services on a sliding fee scale. For more information, call 517-266-2588.

Families may also need support from professional services such as home care agencies, respite providers, adult day programs, or assisted living communities. These organizations continue to invest in education and training so staff can provide high-quality care and support for families. The Lenawee County Department on Aging offers a Senior Resource Guide with local programs and contact information at www.lenaweeseniors.org.

No matter where you find yourself on the dementia journey — as a patient, caregiver, family member, or friend — support and resources are available. If the path feels uncertain, reach out for help.

Staying connected through local programs and social media can also help families learn about new resources, treatments, and opportunities for support.

Community members can also help make a difference by supporting the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Oct. 4.

Kratom and 7-OH: What you need to know The opioid epidemic continues to evolve, and a new concern is quietly appearing on store shelves, products labeled as kratom that may actually contain 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH).

While kratom comes from a natural plant native to Southeast Asia, not every product sold as “kratom” is truly natural.

Some contain synthetic or concentrated forms of 7-OH, a compound that affects the brain the same way as opioids and can be highly addictive and dangerous.

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tropical tree whose leaves have been used in some cultures for pain relief and energy. In the United States, it is commonly sold as an herbal supplement in powders, capsules, or teas. At low doses, kratom can act as a stimulant, increasing alertness. At higher doses, it may produce sedation and pain relief similar to opioids.

Although some individuals use kratom to manage pain or ease withdrawal, it is not approved by the FDA for any medical purpose.

The growing concern centers on 7-OH. Naturally, this compound makes up less than 2% of kratom’s composition.

However, some manufacturers now concentrate or synthetically produce it and market it as “enhanced kratom.”

These products can be significantly more potent, sometimes stronger than morphine, and far more addictive than natural kratom leaf.

MONICA HUNT Because kratom products are not regulated, they are easy to find in gas stations, vape shops, and online.

Colorful packaging and claims such as “natural” or “energy-boosting” can make them appear harmless, but people often have no way of knowing how potent they really are.

As of April 2026, kratom remains legal but unregulated in Michigan. Lawmakers have introduced House Bill 5537, which has passed the Michigan House and is now under consideration in the Senate. It would prohibit the sale and production of kratom.

Until regulations are in place, consumers should use caution, as products labeled as kratom may vary widely in strength and purity and could contain contaminants or synthetic additives.

Even natural kratom can cause side effects, including nausea, sweating, irritability, rapid heartbeat, confusion, constipation, and dry mouth. It can also lead to dependency and withdrawal symptoms. When mixed with other drugs or alcohol, the risks increase significantly. 7-OH, in particular, can

depress breathing — the same dangerous effect that makes opioids deadly.

If someone is unresponsive or breathing slowly, call 911 immediately.

Because 7-OH acts like an opioid, naloxone (Narcan) can reverse its effects and may save a life.

As with many substances marketed as “natural,” the risks of kratom are often misunderstood. These products are sold openly and sometimes promoted for energy, focus, or pain relief, but without reliable safety oversight. Whether you are a parent, caregiver, or adult consumer, staying informed and having open conversations can help prevent misinformation and reduce harm.

Natural kratom and synthetic 7-OH are not the same. While kratom itself carries some risk, 7-OH is a potent opioid. Its easy availability makes awareness and education essential. By staying informed, we can help protect ourselves and our communities from the next wave of the opioid epidemic.

Linda Grund, 78, died on Jan. 7 in Palm Desert, Florida. She was born in Adrian, attended St. Joseph’s Elementary School, and graduated from Adrian Catholic Central with the class of 1965. She was a graduate of Siena Heights College and worked briefly as a flight attendant before beginning her teaching career. After marriage, she and her husband lived on the west coast, where she continued working in education.

Cindy Sue Shively, 68, of Blissfield died on Jan. 15. She was a 1975 graduate of White Cloud High School. She graduated from the Blodgett Memorial Medical Center School of Nursing in Grand Rapids in 1978. She was a registered nurse and retired from the University of Michigan Ambulatory Centers and the Anticoagulation Service for UM Hospitals at the end of her 41-year career as a caregiver. She was active in the Michigan Nurses Association. [W] Gregory Atwood Carr, 73, of Atlantic Beach, Florida, died on Feb. 22. He was a 1971 graduate of Adrian High School and attended Eastern Michigan University. He moved to Florida in 1975 where he worked for 37 years career with Amtrak, retiring in 2013. He was a master gardener and volunteered for a decade with the Atlantic Beach Police Department.

Pamela Jean Cisco, 78, of Adrian died on March 21. She worked at Gelman Science for 25 years, retiring in 2005. She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, walking in the park, and spending time at the family cabin up north. [H] Alexandra Joan “Lexi” Murray, 61, of Adrian died on March 25. She was a creative person with many hobbies and interests, including cross-stitching, jewelry making, painting, gardening, photography, and writing. She and her husband restored and remodeled their Victorian home in Adrian. She studied graphic design at Jackson College and worked for the local newspaper, the Chamber of Commerce, and other businesses before retiring to return to her research and art. [ochalekstark.com] Michael Dale Frederick, 69, of Cherry Grove, Oregon, died on March 31. He was raised in Hudson and attended Hudson High School until the age of 15 when his family moved to Phoenix. He later moved to Findlay, Ohio, and started working as a senior technician for Culligan Industrial Systems. He retired in 2019 from Siemens after over 30 years. He worked at Raymond Auto Sales in Adrian and Whitman Ford in Temperance before making his career at the Ford Motor Co. Rawsonville Plant for 25 years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the UAW Local 898, VFW Post 6509, and Grace Bible Fellowship Church. [capaulfuneralhome.com] Raymond Joseph Poremba, 76, of Brooklyn died on April 16. He graduated from Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit in 1968 and attended Henry Ford Community College. He earned an undergraduate degree from UM Dearborn and a master’s degree from Wayne State University. He retired from Ford Motor Co. in 2003. He was a pontoon boat captain, artist, writer, builder, interior designer, expert organizer, lighting connoisseur, critical thinker and problem solver, and jack-of-all-trades. [E]

Terry Lynn Henry, 65, of Sand Creek died on April 17. He was a 1978 graduate of Sand Creek High School and was a member of Sand Creek Community Church during his youth. He dedicated his career to being an EMT and firefighter with the Madison Fire Department, a profession he cherished and excelled in for 32 years before retiring in 2017 as assistant chief. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, No. 2371. [AM] Jeffrey Allan Double, 60, of Addison died on April 18. He was a graduate of Addison High School where he was involved with 4-H and excelled in art. He used his artistic talents later in life making bracelets and other items from leather and different materials. His passion was working with horses. [BVH] Robert Roman Kaczor, 78, of Hudson died on April 18. He was employed as a foreman for the former Metalloy Foundry in Hudson. He enjoyed painting pictures of scenery and birds, woodworking, and tinkering on projects. [AM] Richard Lee Brey, 80, of Hudson died on April 19. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of the Knights of Columbus through his home parish, Sacred Heart in Hudson, achieving the distinction of 4th Degree. While residing in Marco Island, Florida, he served as an usher at San Marco Catholic Church. He built a successful career as an agent with Thrivent Insurance. He loved spending time on the water at Lime Lake in Hudson. [AM] Keith Alan Fenton, 55, of Adrian died on April 19. He was a 1989 graduate of Hudson High School. He worked at Uckele Health and Nutrition in Blissfield, until health issues required him to retire. [AM] Vendla “Nan” Josephson, 92, of Tecumseh died on April 19. She worked in electronics most of her adult life and retired from Sensors in Saline. She volunteered at the Saline Hospital for many years. [PA] William “Will” L. Tomes, 48, of Manitou Beach died on April 20. He lived most of his life in and around the Manitou Beach area.

He was a loving single father of two and an avid outdoorsman. [BVH] Dr. Alan Lee Ellerholz, 79, of Adrian, died on April 21. He started Ellerholz Chiropractic in 1970 and spent over 50 years in practice. He was a longtime member of Bethany Assembly of God in Adrian.

He enjoyed bowling and was part of the Lenawee County Bowling Association and past president of the Michigan State Bowling Association. He also served as a softball umpire. When he was younger he competed in five Detroit Free Press Marathons. [W] Charles “Chuck” William Marcinkiewicz, 76, died on April 21. He was born in Kansas City and grew up in Livonia, later making his home in Tipton, Alpena, and Clinton. He served in the U.S. Navy as a radio operator. He was an active member of the Bits and Pieces Remote Control Airplane Club. [AM] Donna J. Suydam, 84, of Clayton died on April 21. She worked in housekeeping at the former Adrian Mall for 17 years and also worked at the Beach House Restaurant. [AM] Donald A. (Papa) Eveleth Jr., 90, of Adrian died on April 22. He graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a degree in mathematics. Although he was offered an opportunity to sign with the Minor Leagues, he chose to pursue a career in education.

He spent 35 years as a high school math teacher at Wayne Memorial High School

until retirement. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Brooklyn for 30 years, and after moving to Adrian he became a member of Jasper Bible Church. [AM] James William Nichols, 89, of Jackson, died on April 22. He was a graduate of Tecumseh High School and Adrian College.

He spent his career in trucking logistics. He was a founding member of the Lutheran Church of the Lakes. [E] Charlene Ann Sullivan, 92, of Brooklyn, died on April 22. She was born in Dearborn.

She was generous, kind, a great cook, enjoyed knitting, and was an avid reader of mysteries. [E] Anna Bragg, 97, of Blissfield, died on April 23. Family was the motivating force throughout her life. The family enjoyed camping, with Indian River being a favorite destination. She was a longtime member of Evangelical United Brethren Church, now Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Blissfield. [W] Shirley Jean (Patrick) Justick, 79, of Adrian, died on April 23. She enjoyed doing yard work and had a green thumb, enjoyed sharing stories, and loved camping with family and friends. [PA] Roy Sherman Pollard Jr., 89, formerly of Grass Lake and Brooklyn, died on April 23.

A 1956 graduate of Grass Lake High School, he served in the Army National Guard for 12 years. He worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 18 years and General Motors for 12 years. He was a member of New Life Baptist Church in Addison. [E] Larry Lee DeLine, 74, of Adrian, died on April 24. He was a 1970 graduate of Adrian High School where he received various awards for his participation in baseball and football. He was a foundry worker for Ervin Amasteel for 30 years. He attended Adrian First Church of the Nazarene. [PA] Delores Ann Trumble, 92, of Addison died on April 24. She was a 1952 graduate of Addison High School. She worked as a receptionist for Addison schools and then worked for J.D. Enterprises until her retirement in 1988. She was a member of the Eagles and the American Legion in Florida. She had a passion for gardening and took pride in preserving her harvest through canning and freezing. [BVH] Deanna Mae Bowman, 87, of Adrian died on April 25. She was employed by Fisher Body in Tecumseh and then the Hydromatic plant in Toledo, retiring in 1997. She had a creative side and enjoyed painting, crafting, crocheting, remodeling, and flipping homes. [AM] William “Bill” Carlson, 76, of Adrian died on April 25. He retired from Tecumseh Products after 40 years of service. He loved working on and restoring old cars. [PA] Raymond Earl “Ray” Marrison, 93, of Adrian died on April 25. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Korean War, stationed aboard the USS Shangri-La. After his military service he worked as a machine repairman for Hydramatic in Willow Run for over 30 years. He enjoyed cars, collecting coins, and photography. [AM] Rebecca Ann Reaume, 51, of Blissfield died on April 26. She was a 1992 graduate of Blissfield High School and earned her associate and bachelor’s degrees from Siena Heights University. She was an equine trainer and braider. [AM] Betty Jean Hall, 95, of Morenci died on April 27. She was a 1948 graduate of Sand Creek High School. In her early life she worked at a bakery, factory, Bancroft Cleaners, and as a telephone operator for the Sand Creek Telephone Company. Most of her career was spent as a florist and she co-owned the Morenci Flower Shop for many years until her retirement in 1992. [AM] Connie Kae Raper, 67, of Adrian, died on April 27. She was a 1976 graduate of Adrian High School. She enjoyed tending to her vegetable garden, going on motorcycle rides with her husband, and feeding wildlife around their home. [AM] Timothy Paul Damon, 68, of Adrian, died on April 28. He was a 1975 graduate of Onsted High School and continued his education at Kellogg Community College.

He was a social worker for the state of Michigan until his retirement. [AM]

James Harsh, 55, died on April 28. He was born in Adrian. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting. [E] Gloria Ann Kittle, 83, of Tecumseh died on April 28. She drove school buses for 20 years for Tecumseh schools. Even after her retirement she continued driving buses for the Lenawee Intermediate School District.

She was a member of Tecumseh United Methodist Church. [H] Sharon E. Schreiner, 75, of Adrian died on April 28. She was a 1969 graduate of Monroe High School and continued her education at Monroe Community College and the University of Michigan. She retired from Ford Motor Company’s Woodhaven Stamping Plant. She was also a member of the Plumbers Union and worked at the Fermi Atomic Plant. She owned and operated Nature’s Creations plant stores in Ann Arbor and Grosse Pointe. She was a lifelong member of the Lake Erie Rough Riders Ski Club and was active in the Monroe Historical Society. [AM] Mercedes Fitzsimmons, 93, of Adrian died on April 29. She attended St. Mary’s Parish School and Marquette University.

She then entered the Adrian Dominican Congregation, receiving the name Sr. Maura Michael, OP. She continued her education at Siena Heights College, earning a master’s degree in education. After many years of ministry, she discontinued formal membership with the Congregation but maintained strong connections. Her final stop was in Adrian where she had strong affiliations with the Sisters in the Dominican Life Center. [AM] Janet Joycelyn Mullen Craddock, 91, died on April 30. She was born in Clearfield, Kentucky, and raised in the farmlands of Trenton, Michigan. She and her husband demonstrated a servant’s heart and reached out to many both in the neighborhood and in the church. [W] Mary Catherine “Kate” Lapham, 63, of Saline died on May 2. She was a 1980 graduate of Tecumseh High School and received her bachelor’s degree in 1985 from Siena Heights College. Shortly after college graduation she began working at Electronic Data Systems in Troy and St. Louis, where she worked as a project specialist analyst for the General Motors Midwest and North account. She retired from EDS in 2003 at the age of 41 and continued to work parttime for Wamhoff Accounting Services for eight more years. She was active with St. Ferdinand Catholic Church in Florissant, Missouri. Support dogs were a lifelong passion for her. [PS] Keith George Pustelak, 74, of Clinton died on May 2. After high school he obtained a bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University. He worked as the director of quality control at Active Aero, an air cargo company, retiring in 2024. [H] Kathy Joe Arnold, 82, of Adrian died on May 4. She cared for everyone and was a second mom to many. [AM] James L. Bramble Jr., 78, of Blissfield died on May 4. He was a graduate of Albion High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1967-69 during the Vietnam War. He worked in the Michigan oil field for 15 years and later worked at Consumers Energy for 20 years until retirement. He found his passion in life by farming at Smith Farms. [W] Kristina Jean Gilgallon, 55, of Tecumseh died on May 4. She was a 1989 graduate of Clinton High School and spent her career working as a legal secretary and paralegal in Ann Arbor. [PA] Mark John McKenzie, 66, of Tecumseh died on May 4. He was a 1977 graduate of Onsted High School and worked for Pegasus Mold and Die in Tecumseh since as the machine shop manager. He enjoyed any kind of racing. [AM] Kenneth DeArie Brugger, 72, of Hudson, died on May 5. He was a 1972 graduate of Clinton High School. He had a lifelong passion for farming, and in addition to operating his own farm, he worked at several local dairy farms. He was involved in 4-H when his children were young, serving as superintendent of the goat barn and on the small animal board. [AM]

IN MEMORY Linda Sue (Arnett) Clear, 73, of Adrian, died on May 5. She attended Adrian High School with the class of 1970. [PA] Emilio “Sugar Bear” Montecinos Jr., 81, of Adrian died on May 5. He worked as a production worker in the manufacturing industry. He enjoyed Spanish music, family time, cookouts, and sports. [PA] Herbert Ronald Miller, 93, of Adrian, died on May 5. He was a 1950 graduate of Adrian High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55. He started his career as a tool and die maker. His strong work ethic and commitment to learning led him to become a vice president in manufacturing at Faraday Inc., where he worked for 38 years. In 1992 he started his own businesses, R&R Signal and Michigan Signal. He was an avid golfer and member of Lenawee Hills Country Club and Wolf Creek Golf Club. He also enjoyed bowling.

Most recently he lived at Brookdale Assisted Living in Adrian. [W] Philip Hoyt Hendershot, 83, of Tecumseh died on May 6. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Rhode Island and served in the U.S. Air Force. After his military service he worked in the field of oceanography as a radio technician. He was a member of the American Legion. He loved nature and enjoyed long walks and taking photographs, particularly at Indian Crossing Trails. [H] Kenneth Ralph “Kenny” Hooten, 76, of Onsted died on May 6. He graduated from Tecumseh High School and had a lifelong career as a skilled craftsman and builder. He was a member of the American Legion Post 315 in Brooklyn, SAL Post 550 in Onsted, and Irish Hills Eagles 3689. [PA] Dick B. Rhoads, 96, of Morenci died on May 6. He was a former resident of Waldron and Hudson and graduated from Hudson High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Army. After his military service he worked for the grocery store that his wife’s parents started in Morenci, Keefer’s Market, which he later owned. In retirement he enjoyed working in historical reenactment at Sauder Village in Archbold. He was also active with the Morenci Senior Center and was a member of Medina Federated Church. [AM] Valarie Ann (Volk) Baker, 58, of Adrian died on May 7. She enjoyed dancing, laughing, and telling stories. She also enjoyed traveling to Jamaica with her husband. [AM] Charles “Chuck” Earl Fetzer, 76, of Blissfield died on May 7. He spent his entire life in Blissfield and took pride in his hometown. He loved to fish, bowl at Rich Lanes, and participate in local softball leagues. After becoming a father, one of his greatest passions was serving as a Project Parent at the Lenawee County Fair. [W] Robert “Bob” Leroy Green, 85, of Adrian died on May 7. He was a 1959 graduate of Adrian High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. His career in finance spanned over 50 years.

He worked at Commercial Savings Bank in

Adrian for over 30 years and for the Adrian Dominican Sisters. He also served as Rollin Township treasurer. He served on several local boards and served as treasurer for Gleaner’s Adrian Arbor. [W] Sandra L. “Sandy” Howard, 78, of Adrian died on May 8. She had been employed by the former Tecumseh Thermal Plastics. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and Awana. [AM] Tammy Jo Colburn, 65, of Adrian died on May 9. She was a 1979 graduate of Madison High School. She worked at Merillat Industries in Adrian until they closed. [PA] Pat (J.P.) McDevitt, 86 of Adrian, died on May 9. As a teacher and coach, he inspired countless young people and taught lessons that went far beyond the classroom and court. He treated everyone with respect and compassion, and always made people feel valued and welcome.

James Scott Greene, 85, of Adrian died on May 10. He was a graduate of Adrian High School and served in the U.S. Army.

He worked many years at American Chain & Cable until its closure, and later retired from General Motors. He served as a barber for most of his adult life. He was a faithful member of Bethel AME Church and held active memberships with the NAACP and the UAW Retirees. [PA] Eldora Mae Luft, 71, of Adrian died on May 10. She was a resident of Madison Township and worked for the Clayton Fire Department as an EMT. She attended Jasper Bible Church. [AM] Patricia “Patty” Louise Meddick, 80, of Adrian died on May 10. During the 1970s she worked at the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office. She was a member of Adrian First United Methodist Church. She volunteered for many years at Associated Charities and as a building supervisor at the Lenawee County Fair. Later she was a volunteer at Garfield Elementary School. [W] William “Michael” Milosh, 61, of Adrian, died on May 10. He attended Blissfield schools in his younger years and graduated from Berean Baptist Academy.

He resided in Toledo for 35 years and in 2022 moved back to Adrian. He was a member of the HOPE Community Center and faithfully attended the Adrian First Church of the Nazarene. [W] David Paul Vaillancourt, 76, of Brooklyn died on May 10. [E] Frank Edward Novak, 79, of Blissfield, died on May 11. He was a 1965 graduate of Blissfield High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University. He started his career teaching math at Deerfield schools for three years and then changed his focus from teaching to the insurance field. He was the owner of Frank Novak Insurance Agency for 35 years before he retired. He attended Blissfield Baptist Church and was involved with Blissfield Kiwanis. [W] Suzanne Simon, 92, of Adrian died on May 11. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and also attended Sand Creek Community Church. She served as the Raisin Township clerk for eight years. [AM]

Larry D. Simpkins, 87, of Adrian, died on May 11. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1962-66. He had been employed by American Chain and Cable for 32 years. He also worked for Doug Shierson Racing for two years and Adrian College for five years.

He attended Jasper Bible Church. [AM] Randy West, 43, of Manchester, died on May 11. He loved going to amusement parks and could tell people about most of the roller coasters across the country. [H] Judy Christine (Robison) Eaton, 76, of Tecumseh, died on May 12. She was a 1968 graduate of Tecumseh High School and continued her education in the field of accounting at Cleary College. She worked for several businesses in the area, finishing her career after 27 years with Spectrum Printers in Tecumseh. [PS] Sharon Rose “Mama Rose” Neal, 79, of Adrian, died on May 12. She worked for 25 years as the food service supervisor at Adrian Training School. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and was currently attending Hope Lutheran Church in Adrian. [AM] Bruce Russell Norton, 82, of Brighton, formerly of Adrian, died on May 12. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Adrian College in 1965.

He played football, basketball, and baseball for Adrian College, where he was an active member of the ATO fraternity. He was employed by Merillat Industires in Adrian for more than 30 years until his retirement.

He and his wife were active members of the Devils Lake Yacht Club. [AM] Enrique “Rick” Cavasos, 56, of Adrian, died on May 13. He took pride in taking care of his lawn and showed off his artistic abilities when it came to recreation lawn ornaments. He worked at Faurecia (Forvia) in Saline for over 13 years. [AM] Richard Marvin Mellin Jr., 64, died on May 13. He enjoyed spending time at Posey Lake in Hudson. He dedicated 45 years of service to Toledo Edison before retiring. [R] Nancy J. Booth, 96, of Hudson, died on May 14. She was a 1947 graduate of Hillsdale High School and worked many years at M&S Manufacturing in Hudson. [M] Girture Coon, 96, of Adrian, died on May 14. She worked at American Chain and Cable for 22 years. She was born with a green thumb and had vegetables and flowers flourishing around her. She previously attended Free Will Baptist Church in Adrian. [W] Ruth Ann Sadler, 79, of Adrian died on May 14. She was a 1966 graduate of Adrian High School. She worked as a bookkeeper for American Chain and Cable in Adrian until its closure. She later began working at The Pharm in Adrian until her retirement. [AM] Douglas Lee Brown, 76, of Adrian died on May 15. He lived in Manchester in his early life and attended Jackson College. He began working at the Saline plant of Ford Motor Company at age 19 and worked there until his retirement in 2000. He and his wife were former campers at Green Valley Campground in Morenci. [AM]

Walter Michael “Mike” Gendzwill, 95, of Trenary died on May 15. He was a 1948 graduate of Iron River High School.

He attended Michigan Technological University and earned his bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University and his master’s degree from Siena Heights University. He spent his career in education, teaching math and coaching football and basketball at Boysville. [canalefuneral.com]

Richard San Miguel, 77, of Adrian died on May 15. He grew up in San Francisco.

He moved to Adrian in the late 1990s to be near his daughters. He was employed with Madison Schools as an elementary art teacher, retiring in 2020. [AM] Marylu Muck, 80, of Dundee, formerly of Onsted, died on May 15. She was a 1964 graduate of Onsted High School. She worked for over 40 years as a housekeeper for the University of Michigan. She also helped her husband on the farm. After her retirement from UM, she worked for six years at Dundee Community Schools serving student lunches.

Barry Curtis Williams, 75, of Clinton died on May 16. He worked as an oiler, foreman and on the line at Ford Motor Company in Saline for over 37 years, retiring in 2006. He loved to help those in need and volunteered with the Salvation Army and with the Amish. [H] Lynley (Gerken) Dye, 62, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Hudson, died on May 17.

She was a 1964 graduate of Tecumseh High School. She managed the Tecumseh Frosty Boy for 10 years and also worked at Busch’s as assistant service manager. She was a faithful member of Christ Temple Ministries in Adrian. [PA] Stevenell Glenn Clark, 73, of Grass Lake, died on May 19. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved spending time outdoors. Garden Club

Tea, a fundraising event that was held from 1947 to 2006. In 2007, the club moved to holding an annual plant sale and yard sale to raise funds the scholarship. The sale is held the Friday and Saturday before Mother’s Day. The plants and seeds for the sale come from the gardens of the club members

themselves, and contributions come from a local greenhouse and nursery.

The Adrian Garden Club meets on the third Tuesday of the month from March to November. Each meeting features a program that is related to gardening. The programs this year include speakers on Botanical Beverages, Beekeeping 101

and Hidden Lake Gardens. Also included is a member garden tour in July as well as a Kiwanis Trail Walk in September. The trail walk will be led by Janet Salzewedel, a retired biology professor from Adrian College and will focus on identifying native plant species that grow along the trail.

Special events in June include assisting with the Michigan Garden Clubs State Conference in Ann Arbor and a bus tour that includes the Royal Oak Farmers Market and the Meadowbrook Estate in Rochester. The club also participates in the Michigan Garden Clubs Fall Conference and the Civitan Fourth of July Parade.

In order to increase membership and raise awareness of the group, the club has developed a logo and printed T-shirts and brochures.

Lynch said that she became a member of the group after working for years with a schedule that would not allow her to attend the meetings. Although the group is based in Adrian, members come from towns throughout Lenawee County that might not have a gardening club, including Hudson, Britton and Onsted.

The Adrian Garden Club meets from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. every third Tuesday of the month from March through November. A holiday luncheon is held in December. Planning meetings are held in January and February. The club meets at the Adrian District Library, located at 143 E. Maumee St. in Adrian. Dues for the club are $15 a year for a regular membership or $20 for an associate membership. More information is available on Facebook by searching for Adrian Garden Club.

“Our life has been an adventure,” Pat said, “and the Lord was with us every step of the way.”

Adventure also came through Norman’s love of flying. A licensed pilot, he kept flying until just a couple of years ago, despite losing the fingers of his right hand in a home improvement accident more than 50 years ago.

He was renovating their summer cottage on Devils Lake and using a radial arm saw to cut wood when his hand was pulled under the blade.

Pat said Norm’s first worry was how the injury would affect his annual hunting trips.

“I was really upset,” he said. “How the heck was I going to learn to shoot my rifle with one hand?”

He did learn. He kept hunting. And after an intense certification process, he was cleared to fly again.

“We’ve always lived close to the Lenawee airport, so it just seemed natural to have a plane,” Patricia said.

“We often flew up north with the kids and grandkids.”

The couple also spent many winters as Florida “snowbirds” at their home in Winter Haven, where they held season passes to Detroit Tigers spring training games in Lakeland and built lasting friendships over the years.

Through all of it, Pat said, Norm has remained steady and kind.

“Norman always put me and the kids first,” she said. “He is such a kind person.”

“We take care of each other,” her husband replied.

The Longs have been members of Sand Creek Community Church for 55 years. Pastor Bill Van Valkenburg, who came to know them while preaching at Sand Creek, said he has long felt a special connection to the couple. He first noticed them in an anniversary announcement 15 years ago and realized they had been married on June 23, 1951 — the exact day he was born.

“All I can say is that we have just had a special connection through the years,” Van Valkenburg said. “I consider them dear and precious friends.”

For the Longs, the years have gone quickly. But after 75 years of marriage, what remains is not simply the number.

It is the life inside it — the homes they made, the children they raised, the

places they traveled, the losses they endured, the faith that carried them, and the quiet promise they kept to care for one another.

Sitting side by side in their matching blue recliners, the Longs are still doing what they have done for three-quarters of a century.

They are taking care of each other.

from page B1 “We take anybody from beginner to advanced gardener,” she said. “We’ve had people gardening forever and we have people that are just getting into it.”

The Adrian Garden Club works “to provide leadership, education and resources and network opportunities for its members to promote the love of gardening, floral and landscape design, civics and environmental responsibility.”

The Adrian Garden Club is “community oriented,” Lynch said. The club maintains gardens at Monument Park in Adrian, the Lenawee County Fairgrounds, the Lenawee Historical Museum, and a tree at the Comstock Park holiday tree display, as well as Christmas trees at the Adrian District Library and the Lenawee District Library.

Another project is the “Garden of the Month” program, in which an outstanding garden is chosen for recognition by the club. The “Garden of the Month” is nominated based on how attractive it is and is chosen by club members.

One of the bigger projects of the Adrian Garden Club is a $2,000 scholarship that is awarded each year to a graduating senior from Lenawee County who is going on to study horticulture, biology, floral or landscape design or another field related to the environment. The winner is chosen by club members based on applications.

Longs from page B1 “The business was very good to us for a long time,” she said.

Their son, Jeff, later took over the business from his father. He now helps his parents with the house and visits daily.

The Longs’ life together has included joy, hard work and adventure, but it has also included sorrow. Their daughter, Jacquelyn Sue Long Carson, was killed in a crash with a semi on U.S. 223. She left behind her husband and two young children.

“We have been through a lot,” Pat said, her eyes filling with tears. “The death of a child can break a marriage, but it brought us closer together. We think of her every day.”

The Longs also have five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Before children came along, travel became part of their married life.

“We didn’t have children for nine years, so we got into the habit of taking a trip every year,” Pat said. “We’ve been all over the world.”

They traveled up north regularly to their family cottage near Mancelona.

They also traveled to Australia, Japan, Europe and Canada. For their 50th wedding anniversary, they took a Rhine River cruise and visited the Moselle region, a place Pat was keen to see because her father had served there during World War I. Twenty years later, they took a crosscountry Amtrak trip.

“It had its mishaps,” Pat said, “but it was something on our bucket list, and it ended well.”

Their life together was interrupted early by military service. A year after they were married, Norm was called up and sent to Japan, where he spent much of the Korean War era.

Adrian-area events planned to mark nation’s 250th ADRIAN — A number of community groups in the Adrian area are planning events over the next few months to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States.

Church of the Nazarene hosts block party: Adrian First Church of the Nazarene, 50 Industrial Drive, will host a block party to celebrate America’s 250th from 2-6 p.m. Saturday, June 27.

The event will be a community celebration featuring food trucks, a car show, games, music, prizes, a petting zoo, military tribute, historical fashion show, inflatables, face painting, and a presentation by Abraham Lincoln reenactor Kevin Wood.

The inflatables and games will run from 2-4 p.m., then President Lincoln, the fashion show, giveaways, and music start at 4 p.m.

City of Adrian to host band performance and fireworks: The theme for Adrian First Fridays festivities in downtown Adrian on July 3 will be “Firecracker Friday.” The evening’s activities include a performance by the Adrian City Band. There will also be a fireworks display at Comstock Park on West Maumee Street beginning at dusk.

Independence Day activities in Adrian: On Saturday, July 4, Civitan of Lenawee is organizing Adrian’s Fourth of July parade. Clubs, nonprofits, Scouting groups, dance groups, businesses, old cars and tractors, costume wearers, and bicycles are all invited to join in the celebration. The parade will start

ASO’s Summer Chamber Series begins with pair of piano trios

ADRIAN ­— A guest artist who performed with the Adrian Symphony Orchestra in the 2024-25 season returns to Adrian this month, this time with two colleagues, to kick off the ASO’s Summer Chamber Series.

The Tesserae Trio, made up of violinist Fabiola Kim, cellist Leo Singer, and pianist Alan Woo, performs at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, at Holy Rosary Chapel on the Adrian Dominican Sisters’ Motherhouse campus, 1257 E. Siena Heights Drive, Adrian.

Tickets are $27 each or $77 for the entire three-concert series. All the concerts will take place at Holy Rosary Chapel. Student tickets are free at the box office only with a valid student ID. All seating is general admission but patrons who purchase the entire series will be seated in a special reserved section.

Community theater troupe plans series of one-act plays in June, July and August

TECUMSEH ­— Back in October 1960, a group of amateur performers from in and around Tecumseh who called themselves the Guild of Tecumseh Players got together to stage a single performance of the play “Charley’s Aunt” at what was then the Strand Theater.

Almost 66 years later, the Tecumseh Players, as the troupe is now called, continue to draw people living in and around Lenawee County who love theater and enjoy being onstage —

and, in the process, have formed a community of their own.

“You get to go and goof around with your friends, you get to do make-believe and make people laugh,” said Josh Smith, the Tecumseh Players’ current board president. The longtime actor and director has been part of the group since 2022.

“Obviously, we all have a love of theater, but this gives us a way to get together and meet new people,” added Nona Bennett, who’s been with the Players for some 30 years.

The Players are producing a series of three short one-act comedies this summer, beginning with Kenneth R.

NAACP invites community to annual Juneteenth freedom celebration ADRIAN — The Lenawee County Branch of the NAACP will host its annual Juneteenth celebration on Friday, June 19, from 4-9 p.m. in downtown Adrian.

The event will bring the community together for an evening of entertainment, activities, and celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States and honoring African American history, culture, and freedom.

“Juneteenth is a time to reflect on our history, celebrate progress, and come together as a community,” said Jeanette Henagan, president of the NAACP of Lenawee.

“We’re excited to once again host this celebration in downtown Adrian and

welcome families from across the region to join us.”

The celebration will feature live entertainment throughout the evening, beginning with a variety show presented by the Boys and Girls Club of Lenawee from 4-5 p.m.

Toledo-based R&B and funk band Distant Cousinz will headline the evening with a live performance from 5-9 p.m.

Additional activities planned for the event include a youth 3-on-3 basketball tournament, bounce house, and face painting for children and families to enjoy throughout the evening.

‘CompARTments’ on display at ACA Gallery starting June 8 ADRIAN — The Adrian Center for the Arts invites guests to discover assemblage art, a three-dimensional artistic medium that involves creating sculptures or reliefs by combining disparate, everyday, and found objects.

For the ACA’s upcoming exhibit, titled “CompARTments,” ACA member artists used discarded or found boxes of all sizes and types to create assemblage art in and around the box form.

The exhibit runs from June 8 through July 19, with an artists’ reception on Sunday, June 14, from 2-4 p.m.

The Adrian Center for the Arts is at 1375 N. Main St., Adrian.

“Surface Tension” at Flatlanders: Flatlanders Art Galleries is currently presenting “Surface Tension,” an exhibit by studio artist Timothy Van Beke.

The exhibit opened May 16 and will remain on display through July 11. A reception with the artist is planned for Sunday, June 14, from 1-3 p.m.

Van Beke is a former art professor at Siena Heights University. He has also taught at Georgia State University, Texas A&M International University, and Southeastern Louisiana University.

His current work is centered on a dialogue between impulse and restraint, where spontaneous gestures operate within and against loosely structured systems, producing a visual language that is both fluid and recognizable, yet whose meaning remains narratively private.

“My work develops through a dialogue between impulse and restraint,” he said. “The work explores the tension between uninhibited mark-making and the frameworks that shape perception and interpretation. Through an iterative, process-driven approach emphasizing immediacy and presence, layered surfaces emerge through responsive gestures, revision, and accumulation. Uncertainty functions as a generative condition, directing intuitive experimentation as forms shift in and out of focus during the act of making.”

Brooklyn offers Art in the Park on the fourth Thursday of every month Free monthly event in downtown Brooklyn runs through September BROOKLYN — A popular event series is returning to downtown Brooklyn to bring the best of local arts, beats and eats to the Irish Hills.

The village of Brooklyn is working with community partners to present the second annual Art in the Park series in Weatherwax Park.

The 2026 events kicked off on May 28 and continues on the fourth Thursday of every month from 5-9 p.m.

Everyone is welcome to attend the monthly free events, which will feature a vibrant mix of local artists, live music, farmers market, food trucks and a rotating selection of unique vendors, organizers said.

Upcoming dates are: n Thursday, June 25. n Thursday, July 23. n Thursday, Aug. 27. n Thursday, Sept. 24 Art in the Park takes place in Weatherwax Park, a new public park being developed on the east side of downtown Brooklyn, located at 115 Water St. Attendees are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets if they’d like seating during the events.

Art in the Park is organized by the Village of Brooklyn Corridor Improvement Authority with support from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council, True Community Credit Union, Experience Jackson, TLC Community Credit Union, Barker Weber Insurance Agency and American 1 Credit Union.

‘Gypsy’ comes to the Croswell stage in June ADRIAN — The Croswell Opera House continues its 2026 Broadway Season with the musical “Gypsy.”

This classic musical about celebrity and family tells the story of Rose, an ambitious showbiz mother, and her two daughters as they travel across the country in search of fame with their vaudeville act. As the times change, Rose must accept the end of vaudeville, the rise of burlesque, and the price exacted on her daughter by her drive to succeed.

Set across America in the 1920s and ’30s, Arthur Laurents’ milestone show includes a celebrated score by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim. With one notable hit after another, including “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “Let Me Entertain You,” and “You Gotta Get A Gimmick,” “Gypsy” has been regarded as a quintessential American musical.

“The Bremen Town Musicians” was previously staged by the Players as part of their summer series in 2023, while the other plays are new to the group.

The Players choose their one-acts through a communal process of reading through different scripts to see which ones stand out. “It’s hard to find good 30 to 45-minute one-acts,” Bennett said, “but we read [several] and if everybody laughed, it was a winner.”

The series is the beginning of what the Players hope is a return to a full-fledged program after the COVID-19 pandemic put the brakes on their efforts.

“We did a couple of shows here and there after COVID, but not near what

we used to do,” said Sarah Buxton, who has been with the troupe since 2024 and serves as its media outreach coordinator.

Smith said the group has a number of ideas for the immediate future. “We really want to reinvigorate the program,” he said. Among those ideas are a possible return to doing a dinner theater show and looking at different small venues.

“We’re thinking of other ways to bolster what the Tecumseh Players can offer,” he said. “We want to get out in the community so people know we’re here.”

Buxton said their goal is to get back to their former schedule of doing a couple of productions a year plus what they call “Reader’s Theater,” in which a cast sits

around a table and does an informal play reading with an audience present.

The Players welcome involvement from new participants, whether on the acting side or as tech people. And “we love doing original works, so if a writer is out there …” Bennett said.

“Reader’s Theater would love to do the first read-through of someone’s play.

That would be really awesome.”

Prior to that concert, she worked with Kiesling in a performance of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the orchestra he conducts in California.

When Kiesling asked her to return to Adrian for a chamber-music concert, she suggested her trio perform rather than her doing a solo concert, and he thought that was a great idea.

Kim “really wowed our audience when she played the Brahms concerto with the orchestra. So I was excited to hear her do something different and more intimate,” Kiesling said.

But when she suggested her chambermusic collaboration instead of a solo concert, “I jumped at the chance. The other two members are new to me, but I’m very much looking forward to meeting them and hearing them play.”

The Juilliard-trained Kim was born in New Jersey to parents who were both completing their doctorates, her father — internationally known pianist Daejin Kim — at Juilliard and her mother at Rutgers.

The family later moved to South Korea, where she made her concerto debut with the Seoul Philharmonic at age seven, just three years after beginning her violin studies.

She is currently assistant professor of violin at the University of Michigan and

Her collaborators in the Tesserae Trio are cellist Leo Singer and pianist Andrew Woo. Singer is currently artistic manager of the University of Michigan Youth Performing Arts Pre-College and on the music faculty at the University of Michigan–Flint. This fall, he will be an assistant professor of cello at Ohio State University. Woo is part of the University of Georgia’s music faculty.

The trio’s name derives from the term for the tiles used to make a mosaic. Each piece becomes a small part of the whole in the same way that, in music, each instrument joins with the others to create a larger work.

“We’re all small pieces of an ensemble,” Kim said. “Little pieces make music together, little pieces come together to make a greater whole.”

For its Adrian concert, the group will play Smetana’s Piano Trio in G minor

And while the composer’s profound loss definitely infuses the music, “I think you hear the light in the piece, and sort of the hope.”

As for the other work on the concert’s program, Kim sees the performance as a way to showcase what she called “the other” Mendelssohn piano trio.

Written in 1845 at the height of the composer’s career, it’s not nearly as wellknown as his Piano Trio No. 1, “but it’s a

great piece too. I love how it highlights all the instruments,” she said.

Kiesling described the Mendelssohn work as “turbulent and passionate but ultimately controlled — a masterwork of Romantic craft,” and Smetana’s trio as “rawer, more rhapsodic, and deeply personal — less about formal architecture and more about emotional truth and grief.”

He thinks that the two works, as piano trios, are perfect for a chamber music concert, especially in a space like Holy Rosary Chapel.

“I love the space at Holy Rosary because of how close nearly everyone in the audience gets to sit,” he said. “In chamber music, you really want to feel like you’re in on the secret, watching and hearing the musicians communicate with each other up close.

“And a piano trio is a wonderful combination for exactly that. The violin and cello can trade roles fluidly — one carrying the melody while the other anchors the bass line, then switching — and the piano weaves in and out as rhythm, melody, and bass all at once.

“What strikes me about a trio versus a duo is how dramatically a third instrument opens things up. Two instruments can sometimes feel like a limitation for a composer, but add that third voice — especially the piano — and suddenly there are a million possibilities.”

Free family fun kicks off Adrian District Library’s summer reading program ADRIAN — The Adrian District Library will host its Summer Reading Kickoff Party on Monday, June 15, from 5-7 p.m. The event will be held outdoors in Library Square, weather permitting, at 143 E. Maumee St. in downtown Adrian.

The event is free, and registration is not required.

Kids can learn about dinosaurs and fossils with ‘PaleoJoe’ ADRIAN — Kids ages 5 and up are invited to learn all about dinosaurs and fossils when the Adrian District Library hosts a program by Michigan paleontologist and fossil educator Joseph Kchodl, known as “PaleoJoe.” Since moving to Michigan in 1993, Kchodl has taught classes on fossils in many Michigan elementary and middle schools. His programs begin with a brief introduction to what a paleontologist is. He then talks about how fossils form and what they are, before moving on to fossils in the Midwest and a spirited discussion on dinosaurs.

His program at the Adrian library will be on Tuesday, June 30, from 4-5 p.m.

This educational presentation features real Joseph “PaleoJoe” Kchodl will give a dinosaur fossil casts. Civitan of Lenawee will again be sponsoring Adrian’s Fourth of July parade.
