Welcome Welcome to the September issue of Product Launcher. where we bring you a selection of new products that have been launched this month and highlight the brands on the page opposite that appear within this issue.

Although the industry might not have produced as many new products throughout this year due to the pandemic, managing current stock levels and also import/export costs, brands have been busy in their R&D departments to ensure that nursery shop floors and websites have a level of freshness to draw the eye of the consumer.

We asked Mariyah Hafesji, Senior Account & Social Media Manager at Kiddies Kingdom why new products are important to nursery retailers. “New products are important as they bring freshness to our product offering which in turn helps us to attract new

customers, whilst also keeping existing customers engaged with our business. New products also allow for renewed conversation and helps us build a solid community through our social media and marketing platforms, as well as bringing new life and energy to our showroom and online website. Additionally, new products also allow us to maintain the seasonal requirements of purchases throughout the year.

“A new product with a USP allows for new efficiencies within our product offering and attracts a wider audience group in a world that caters to different lifestyles. This in turn allows the baby and parenting industry to keep up with changing consumer demands through both creativity and innovation.”

Do you feel we have seen sufficient new product launches this year?

There have been some exciting new launches with brands this year, particularly some new innovative and technical products such as the Joie 360 spin, Maxi-Cosi Pebble 360, Britax Römer and the Silver Cross Motion All Size 360.

However, there have also been a variety of brands that have felt they needed to concentrate on their current lines rather than bring out new products this year. This is due at least in part to the unprecedented times the pandemic has caused, which has had a knockon effect on the overall supply chain, leading to some brands pushing back on new launches.

There is clearly a desire for new products throughout the year, and with everyone now waiting for the doors to Harrogate Int. Nursery Fair to open next month, we bring you a selection of new product launches within the following pages that have just been launched and also highlight a selection of products that became available during the course of 2021.

What do you look for in an item when stocking a new product that has been launched?

When considering a new product launch, we typically look for a product that offers something different to our current lines. A new product’s USPs are key in making this decision, for example a car seat that turns into a stroller or a stroller that you can fold compact without having to take the carry cot out. We also like to understand the market need for that particular product at any given time, and of course will also consider consumer need.

Outside of product-specific considerations, it’s also important that we look at who the brand suppliers already stock with and what their supply chain looks like. We’ll also typically consider where the supplier is based, so that we’re able to analyse the delivery model to ensure we’re able to fulfil our customer’s orders.

Why are new product launches important to our industry?

One thing Covid has taught us is that stock can get stale very quickly! Our industry has always followed fashion trends and it’s important to keep things fresh.

How do new products assist retailers?

Customers always want the latest innovation, the most fashionable colour, the newest model. New products bring people back in the door.

How often do you launch new products within your range?

We’re always releasing new things, every year we have something different to show. We don’t necessarily stick to the same launch schedule each year, as our dolls pram range works on its own timeline. We always have an exciting few months before Christmas!

Does social media play a pivotal role for you when launching new products?

Absolutely! Though we always release to the retailers first. Social Media is important in stirring up interest and getting people onto the shop floor for the first look in real life.

All industries need new products to keep them fresh. Product launches, and I am thinking in particular where the likes of trade exhibitions, e.g., Harrogate, are an opportunity for brands to showcase products, and for retailers to see what is new.

What benefits are there for retailers who showcase new products either on their website or via their shop floors?

Customers are very visual and like to see products on shop floors so that they can actually touch them and try them out.

When this isn’t possible we need to ensure that our offering is also exceptional for online platforms in terms of showcasing new products and detailing all characteristics and functions.

Do you feel we have seen sufficient new product launches this year?

I think we’ve been lucky to see any new products in the market over the last 12 months. I respect brands decisions to halt product development in order to concentrate on getting stock in to stores.

Why are new products important to your business?

New products are hugely important as they create interest and bring people in to our stores. Nothing pulls people in like newness.

What do you look for in an item when stocking a new product that has been launched?

We would look for support in terms of advertising, POS and training. If the product meets a need and hits a price point the product should start to sell itself.

I think we’ll know more once we get to Harrogate.

The lack of shows has definitely reduced our exposure to product launches over the last 18 months so it will be great to get these back in the calendar. We have launched a number of new products as well as several new colours on products we already stock, but the supply chain issues we’re all experiencing currently may well have impacted the manufacturers bigger launch plans.

Why are new products important to your business?

Customers love newness, whether it be the latest pushchair, new colourway or a new deal – we launch on site weekly and as we lead into a new season it’s important to keep up with customers changing needs. We get a lot of customer feedback on what they would like to see and we use onsite search analytics and search trends to help determine our range.

What do you look for in an item when stocking a new product that has been launched?

Brand, price and design are key to all product launches along with the marketing support available to launch to our customers in the most impactful way. As we buy in large volume, we need to ensure that we can sell the stock through quickly so that will inevitably influence the buying team’s decisions.

Not really but given the current climate and all of the issues with stock you can’t expect anything else.

Why are new products important to your business?

New products are important as they create a buzz and bring focus to your business , it’s definitely something we all need.

What do you look for in an item when stocking a new product that has been launched?

I generally look for something a bit different, something unique that will catch people’s attention.

Jason Heller | Huggle Ltd Do you feel we have seen sufficient new product launches this year?

I think it’s probably unfair to expect new product launches over the past year due to the huge challenges that everyone has faced (from Covid to Brexit to shipping pricing and capacity issues). With that said, we are starting to see new products being launched and some of our key brands working to increase their ranges now as we start to get some confidence and stability back into our sector. The Harrogate show is going to be a great opportunity to see some of them in person later this year.

Why are new products important to your business?

Absolutely - we know from 10 years of trading how important new product launches are for the nursery industry however they need to be genuine advances and developments rather than newness for newness sake. Babyzen’s recent addition of the Connect to their range which updates the YOYO for use as a double or twin is a really great example as are Cybex’s Limited Edition and Sports ranges.

What do you look for in an item when stocking a new product that has been launched?

We always look for anything that fills a gap in our product ranges or which offers our customers the opportunity to purchase something which makes their lives easier. We have taken on some wonderful new ranges over the past 12 months which also appeal to a modern, ethical parents looking for functional products that look great and which have been incredibly well received.

Whites Farm Baby Barn Do you feel we have seen sufficient new product launches this year?

We have seen some really important product launches like the Maxi Cosi 360 family and the Joolz Aer cot which added something different to the mix. However, we feel (for us especially) this year has been less about whats new and more about being able to provide the products that are already out on the market and in such high demand. Shipping and stock availability continue to be a bit of a sore subject, and we are thankful so many of our suppliers are focusing on supplying what people are pre-ordering rather than worrying too much about the next thing to come out.

Why are new products important to your business?

At a normal time (non-pandemic/non-brexit) new products are always important to help keep the store and its offering fresh and exciting. Innovation is always needed and with a changing world and changing needs from parents new products always have a place.

What do you look for in an item when stocking a new product that has been launched?

That it offers us something different. It needs to add something new to our range that isn’t already established; why would people go for a brand and an item they have never heard of when the well known and well trusted do the same things? It needs to stand out from the crowd.

Do you feel we have seen sufficient new product launches this year?

Yes, in my opinion there are always new and exciting products launching and I feel this year so far has not proven to be an exception to this rule.

Why are new products important to your business?

For me, new products are an incredibly Important way to show our customers newness and innovation from our suppliers, which keep our shop floor feeling constantly refreshed.

However, there is now also much more research by parents who are looking for products that carry a level of health benefits or eco-credentials and they will have run research online prior to visiting us. I feel it is so important that brands keep on top of these consumer trends and launch products that not only focus on safety, but also perhaps how they can assist a child’s health or lesson the impact on our environment.

For example, at the moment there appears to be so many fashion prams that don’t feature any of these type of credentials - personally I would like to see more. product launcher 7
