Wheeled Goods Focus Design & Innovation
The Power of Design:
How Innovation is Driving the F By Scott Blease, Founder, Plan A Product Development When people think about design in the wheeled goods sector, they often think about appearance first. They notice the sleek chassis, the premium fabrics or the latest colourways. But in reality, good design runs much deeper than aesthetics. At its best, design solves problems. It makes life easier for parents, improves safety, enhances functionality and ultimately creates products that people genuinely love to use. Having spent many years developing products across the nursery sector, I’ve seen first-hand how design has become one of the biggest drivers of innovation within wheeled goods. The pushchairs and strollers we see on the market today are vastly different from those of even a decade ago. Consumer expectations have evolved rapidly and, as a result, product development teams have had to evolve with them. Today’s parents are asking more from their products than ever before. They want lightweight solutions, compact folding, travel-friendly features, sustainable materials and premium styling, often all wrapped into a single product. Meeting those expectations isn’t easy, but it’s exactly what is making the sector such an exciting place to be. Designing Around Real Life One of the biggest shifts I’ve seen is the move towards designing around real-life usage rather than simply meeting technical requirements.
Of course, safety, durability and performance remain absolutely critical. But increasingly, we’re looking at how products fit into everyday family life. How easy is it to fold one-handed? Can it fit into a small car boot? Will it work just as well navigating a busy airport as it does a local park? These are the questions driving many of today’s design decisions. Parents are juggling more than ever, and the products they buy need to keep up. The most successful wheeled goods are those that remove friction from everyday life. In many ways, good design is often invisible. When a product works effortlessly, that’s usually the result of countless hours of design and engineering refinement behind the scenes. Lighter, Smarter, Better Lightweight design continues to be one of the biggest areas of innovation in the category. A few years ago, reducing weight often meant making compromises elsewhere. Today, advances in materials and manufacturing techniques mean we can create products that are both lighter and stronger than previous generations. Refined aluminium structures, improved manufacturing processes and increasingly sophisticated engineering approaches are allowing designers to remove unnecessary weight while maintaining the durability and performance parents expect.

What’s particularly interesting is that consumers now view lightweight design as an expectation rather than a premium feature. Parents don’t want to wrestle with heavy products. They want solutions that are easy to lift, carry and manoeuvre, and that demand is pushing innovation throughout the sector. The Travel Revolution If there’s one trend that has had a huge influence on wheeled goods design in recent years, it’s travel. Families are travelling more frequently and, understandably, they want products that travel with them. That has created enormous demand for compact folding systems, airline-friendly dimensions and lightweight travel strollers. Designing a genuinely travel-friendly product is far more complex than simply making it smaller. Every component has to work harder. Folding mechanisms become more sophisticated, chassis geometries are refined and packaging dimensions become increasingly important. The challenge is always balancing convenience with comfort and functionality. Parents don’t want to sacrifice performance simply because they’re travelling. The brands that are getting this right are finding clever ways to deliver both.
