Bit of a Shnuggle for the Dragons
Shnuggle made their TV debut on Dragons’ Den on Sunday 12th February where viewers saw husband and wife Adam and Sinead Murphy pitch for investment in front of the fearsome five! After what felt like a lifetime of silence, Adam and Sinead delivered their pitch before inviting questions from the dragons. This was when Touker Suleyman asked if he could come and see the products – and without warning, took a run-up and launched himself into ‘Dreami – TheClever Baby Sleeper’ which has been designed as baby’s first bed. Having recovered from his Dreami episode, Touker made an exciting offer, which after the customary walk to the back of the room and a brief negotiation, was accepted.

sleep for babies. Approximately five babies die each week in the UK from Sudden Infant Death syndrome, making it one of the leading causes of death of infants under one. “Corporate support is very important to The Lullaby Trust, although we receive support from a variety of organisations we often make the most impact within the nursery industry, due to the obvious synergy between us as a charity and the sector. The Lullaby Trust is relevant to every family who has a baby in the UK. With over 700,000 new births in the UK every year, it is vitally important that we get our life saving messages and advice to these families. “Our corporate partners The Gro Company, Moba and Kiddy help disseminate our advice through backing our campaigns on social media, displaying our content on their websites, fundraising initiatives and including our logo on their products and packaging. All three of our corporate partners will be getting involved in our awareness campaign Safer Sleep Week March 13-18th and promoting our advice to parents. “Cause related marketing commonly benefits businesses, as consumers are more likely to purchase a product related to a cause, than a similar product with no charity association. Working with The Lullaby Trust can increase the level of trust parents have of a brand “The Gro Company in particular, have made a huge contribution to The Lullaby Trust, raising over £900,000 for us in the 16 years that they have been supporting us. The money raised has gone towards multiple research projects, the running of our help line, the creation of numerous information materials and extending our bereavement support. “In the future we hope to work with more companies who are passionate about safer sleep and the welfare of babies, to continue to get our messages out to the right audience. Although the rates of SIDS have reduced dramatically in recent years, cuts are being made to health visitors and parents are finding it harder to access information, relying on retailers and products more and more to give them the right information. This is why it is important for us to work with the nursery industry to make sure our messages aren’t forgotten.”

BABYCARE
Keeping it in the family Babycare is an Irish family-owned company, established in 1974 offering a large range of nursery and childcare products. With over 40 years’ experience selling baby-related products we talked to Director, Brendan Terry, to find out more. Tell us a little about BabyCare – you first opened your doors in 1974, what was the inspiration to enter the nursery retail industry? Our parents Peter and Fidelma Terry first created BabyCare in the summer of 1974. They had been living in the UK and wanted to return to Ireland. They decided to set up a nursey shop stocking everything for babies from clothing to prams. At the time in Ireland, there were no one-stop baby shops as most retail shops had a corner of the shop selling some nursery items. They stocked many well-known brands of that time. Our parents retired almost 10 years ago and the shop and

wholesale distribution business is now run by myself, my brother and sister.
Having been trading for over 40 years, you have experienced many notable changes within nursery. What would you say has had the largest impact? The largest impact has been the internet. Before the advent of the internet, a shop would be competing for business with other shops in your locality or nearby towns. Nowadays you are competing with the rest of the world.
Have consumer trends changed over the years? Yes they definitely have changed. Years ago
parents t tto b be would ld b be concerned d with ith th the purchase of a cot and pram only. Today, for example, car seat safety and car seats are top priority as everyone has a car. Customer tastes and trends have changed and parents-to-be are willing to try new products.
Is there a particular product category that performs well for you?
We do extremely well with car seats as we carry an extensive range of over 50 seats in store, plus we offer a car fitting service to all customers who purchase car seats from us.
Personally, I think parents buy more car seats than they buy pushchairs and prams. Car safety has become an important factor for parents.
How do you manage the product ranges that you currently stock – are brands important to you?
“ It ’s good to sour ce an d se ll produc ts outs ide th e box. We are alw ay s looking fo r so met hing ne w an d ex cit in g. ”
We find it important to stock brands but we are always trying to source new brands at the annual nursery trade fair in Cologne from countries across Europe. It’s good to source and sell products outside the box. We are always looking for something new and exciting. We like to offer our customers something that they may not have seen in other nursery shops. We are always looking for new innovative niche products that have flair too.
How important is social media to you?
have a website. h IIt’s as if ccustomers check oout your website firrst and see what yo you have online an and then they pay a vvisit to your store. Id do find websites dri drive footfall into one one’s shop. We use social media to let soc customers know cus abo about special offers, sale sales, new products, and we find that com competitions do exceptionally well on exce socia social media and make parents-to-be mak awa aware of your shop.
Do you feel we have sufficient innovation at present?
I think there is something new every year. Sometimes I wonder what more can one do to a pushchair and then something new comes along.
Are there any particular consumer trends that you are experiencing at present?
We find social media very important especially for launching new products or sale events even more so than conventional advertising. Most parents-to-be seem to be using some form of social media these days.
I find there are a lot more products related to the baby sleeping environment and also sleeping aids.
Do you use social media to drive customers to your store or website and if so, how successful is this for you?
We hope to launch an exclusive expectant parent event once every month or two months in our shop. The purpose is to help answer any questions that any future parent to be may have, offer special discounts and some free gifts to welcome their new baby.
We have a website for our shop and I find when customers contact us, one of the first questions they ask is do we

Cover Story: JOIE
Jump for Joie 2016 saw another outstanding year of growth for innovative nursery brand Joie having grown the company turnover from £15million to £30m in a single year. 2017 is already looking to continue this outstanding growth with the company projecting staggering sales of over £40m! n 2016 Joie customers welcomed a wealth of new products into the range, each with the unique features they have come to expect from Joie. Joie’s success is clearly built on a core range of multi-award-winning home and travel products and last year saw even more hero items make a big impact on their respective categories, especially car seats, where two of their biggest and brightest stars could be seen. Following on from the roaring success of the Stages car seat came the Every Stage and as its name suggests its one car seat that’s been designed and engineered to take baby from birth to 12 years of age, helping to make growing up easy for both parent and child. This incredibly adjustable seat can be used rear facing up to 18kgs and features the innovative Auto-Adjust system which see’s the side of the seat widen as the headrest is raised to follow a growing child. This practical feature really appreciated by parents with glowing reviews being received across all media platforms. great new products these star car seats contributed to 12 months of strong consecutive sales growth exceeding all targets for 2016 with huge growth in turnover by year-end for this multi-million pound Company. These great results were further underlined and really endorsed by consumers with the triple gold success Joie’s products had in the 2016/17 Mother and Baby awards. The Every Stage car seat, Litetrax 4 and Serina 2 in1, all three took top honours winning against strong competition in their respective categories. The Every Stage collected best group 1 car seat, Litetrax 4 best pushchair and Serina 2 in 1 best bouncy chair /rocker seat. 2017 looks set to be another exciting year of growth with Joie adding a number of new and innovative products to its portfolio across all categories. Building on Joie’s already strong and multi-award
winning car seat offering comes their first lie flat infant carrier the i-Level. Itt comes complete with an ISOFIX base and the infant carrier is compatible with a range of Joie pushchairs including the Litetrax 4 and the new top of the range Chrome DLX. While i-Size remains a key element of Joie’s range, the ever-popular Stages group 0+/1/2 car seat receives a make over and an ISOFIX base to create an additional model called Stages ISOFIX. The seat now features Joie’s Guard Surround Safety panels for added side impact protection and the AutoAdjust side wings that see the seat widen as the headrest is raised to accommodate growing children. Wheel of fortune ransporting a baby or toddler when out and about isn’t as straightforward as it appears. Today, style coupled with function is an absolute must for any discerning parent pushing a pram, pushchair or stroller. Chassis style, function and fabric choices play a key role. Brands tend to dominate this sector, but we are also seeing success by new entrants. One example is Otti Prams, who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to establish themselves. We asked Angus Bauer, managing director at Otti Prams how he feels that they are currently being perceived? “Breaking into the wheeled goods market is a monumental challenge for any small business. It is unbelievably competitive as you are up against huge established corporates with massive marketing budgets. “As a small business you have to carve out your niche, be brave and stay true to yourself. You have to tell your story and document your journey. As with most new businesses we have found that Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are crucial for getting our message across.” We asked John Barker of Pramland his thoughts on new entrants – does he feel that these have perhaps refreshed the sector? “I would say they have awakened an area of the market that has been dominated by a few products for the past few years. They have approached the market with a clear intent and a clear target market.” Angus understands how difficult it can be to establish a new brand into the world of wheels.

“New entrants to the market are viewed quite naturally with a certain degree of caution so you have to work hard to engage with potential new customers and retailers to win over their trust. “Customer service is of course key. You have to communicate clearly to customers and to respond promptly to any questions they may have - even if that means working evenings and weekends. “We have been really lucky that we have had the backing and goodwill of Nursery Today, Mother & Baby magazine, Gurgle, The Sunday Times and The Mail on Sunday who each support our vision.” Independent retailer Gary Watts, WH Watts agrees that new entrants to the sector have proffered a difference for both retailers and consumers, especially when considering value for money. “Venicci has definitely been an eye opener and have done incredibly well, it just goes to show how important packages and price points are when launching and building a new brand. Brands are without doubt really important as most consumers want a branded product but new brands such as Venicci and Mee-Go have had an impact on the market by offering good value for money. What about trends? What are we currently experiencing? John feels it is possibly all about being proud to be seen pushing your wheels, but has noted that perhaps new parents are on a stricter budget! “We are still experiencing success with the ‘trendy brands’ like Bugaboo and the all new Joolz Day 2, which really hit the ground running when it launched in January,” said John. “We are also finding that our pram bundles are having a resurgence. Prams we can bundle with a car seat, isofix base, bag

The wheeled goods category continues to grow and develop. Here we take a closer look.

and Footmuff are doing well as long as we can keep the price around the £600 mark. Maybe some parents-to-be are responding to the economy and the pound shrinking in their pockets?” Gary agrees and this is why he displays products as a complete package in the store. “Almost every wheeled product we sell is sold with a car seat. We package almost everything in the store that way as it helps us maintain our car seat sales, gives the customer a good deal and ensures that we actually make some money, which is, after all, why we go to work each day!” Of course, we had to find out whether this is still an innovative category. John told us: “I think sometimes we innovate for the sake of it and we claim something is innovative when really it’s not. “True innovation doesn’t happen often but when it does the market certainly reacts. We have had great success with the new Hybrid from BabyStyle – a truly innovative product born from a fresh approach to an age-old problem.” Gary also feels that at the moment innovation isn’t a strong area in wheeled. “Innovation does seem to be quiet limited at the moment and has been for a little while. However, that said, Dorel are bringing out a new Zapp which offers lots of options and the Mee-Go Milano offers something a little different and has been quite well received by consumers.” On a final note, remember, any parent looking at this category can find it to be an absolute minefield – this is where a good retailer can really come into their own. By offering a selection of choice, and of course your knowledge and expertise in this field, the results can be quite gratifying.

The Quinny styling team was inspired by the textiles often used in the sports and activewear industries: lightweight, water-resistant, breathable and colourful. The whole story A vast number of nursery retailers will look to a wholesaler or distributor when it comes to stocking products for their stores or websites. Here we take a closer look at the main benefits of using a wholesaler. wholesaler plays a vital role within the nursery industry and more so for independent retailers as they provide a fantastic way to purchase items in smaller volumes without the need to find that precious space to store and house bulk bought stock. It’s the place where retailers can go to get everything they need for their business. Wholesalers are great for the nursery sector because they are literally a one-stop-shop where an entire range of top brands can be found under one roof. Retailers know that they can get all their needs in one place rather than having to spend valuable time in different locations. We asked Baby Brands Direct Customer Service Manager, Julie James, for her thoughts on the benefits of using a wholesaler. “Essentially a wholesaler is purely independent trade-focused with no accounts with nationals. Whereas a distributor generally would be working with volume stores and has additional responsibility for national marketing, pricing of the brand to consumers, importing etc. “By using a wholesaler it provides a superb platform for independent retailers to be able to mix and match brands, an option to buy in single units on most products and more importantly, quick delivery.” What about stock? Perhaps one of the key elements to remember here, is that by using a wholesaler you don’t have to house and store a mountain of products. Kate Shrubb of Babybase
A
explains why. “We are our customers’ warehouse! These days space is at a premium and no-one wants to have a stockroom crammed with stock. If you order from Babybase by 1pm you will get your delivery the next day and you can look online at any time to find out what is in stock. We sell in singles so the retailer can try a product without having to commit to a carton quantity or more. With over 70 suppliers’ products in stock our carriage paid value of £200 is very easy for everyone to reach.” Are brands offered still on trend and up to date though when bought through a wholesaler? Mike Whitburn, Director at Babyprice told us: “Yes we continuously look for new and innovative products to stay on trend with the market. Often we are approached from the manufacturer or brands who find wholesalers an excellent route to get their new products to retailers. Retailers are then able to keep their stock fresh and on trend.” Would using a wholesaler though give instant access to smaller volumes when we think about the larger dominant brands within the nursery industry? Kate told us: “Very small retailers might find it difficult to reach initial order values for some of the big boys. Buying from us, usually at the same trade price, allows them to stock big brands without the financial or space constraints dealing direct can bring.” But it doesn’t necessarily mean that all brands are instantly available, due in part perhaps to the

complexity of the product and need for specific product training or demonstrations. “Some brands, for example those operating within the wheeled sector, need to give in-depth product training so it is important that they work directly with individual retailers.” Said Julie. “However, this aside, using a credible wholesaler can give access to some larger brands who simply cannot service the independent trade, which is predominately due to the operational costs involved.” Is now the time for you to get on-board with a wholesaler? These companies provide you, the independent retailer-access to products that you may not be able to acquire under a different buying umbrella, giving you the benefit to remain competitive, if not in some cases ahead of, your larger rivals. nursery today

How many days will you be attending the show? We plan on visiting the show on the Tuesday but, if we feel a need to extend into the Wednesday, then we have no problem in doing so.
How many days will you be attending? We are attending for one day only on the Tuesday. Will you pre-plan your visit? This is our first visit so we are not planning to pre-plan our visit in advance. ce
Will you pre-plan your visit? Usually we would book appointments with most of the larger brands who exhibit but, due to the format of the show this year, we will make a couple of appointments in advance with the rest of our time spent popping on to stands that are of interest.
What are your hopes this year? To get an understanding of what we can get from the show and to make contacts to improve our business knowledge in the nursery trade.
What are your hope this year? Hopefully we will see a stabilisation in pricing this year as after Brexit and the damage to the euro, and dollar pricing seems to be on an ever-upward curve, making consumers ever more price-conscious than before and wanting more for their pound.
Are there any specific products that you are looking for? Nursery furniture and new accessories.

How many days will you be attending? We plan to attend the show for one full day. Will you pre-plan your visit? We always pre-plan to ensure that we get the best of out of the show and to ensure that we get to meet all of our key suppliers and some new ones too hopefully! What are your hopes this year? We would really like to find some innovative, new products that will be a great addition to those we already stock. With the currency fluctuation and decreased value of sterling, we have more budget available to spend on UK brands and products and hope to be able to find them at the show. Are there any specific products that you are looking for? We are always on the lookout for new bedding ranges as we’ve struggled to find those at the UK shows. We are also hoping to find some new furniture brands along with some additional travel accessories.

JAN STEWART PRAMS
Harrogate, as always, is a welcome break from a dreary winter. Jan and I sometimes swan it in a convertible with the roof down, while other times we prepare the snow plough with heater on full blast. Unfortunately, the future of Harrogate is once again laced with uncertainty which really is a bit sad, after all, it is has evolved into a bit of nursery institution. It is also a welcome break where retailers can meet potential new suppliers and also get together to have a good old moan about margins, the price of hotels in Cologne, the internet, etc. The industry in the past year has sadly accumulated a few mortal and financial casualties, not least the passing of one of the industries finest ambassadors, Eric Snook. I humbly reserve this space to pay my respects as a lasting tribute to a fine gentleman. Rest in peace Eric. With regard to my expectations for the future of Harrogate, I feel it is time for the organisers to give all the weary pilgrims a little bit back for their past efforts. For example, how about paying Jan’s bar bill at the Brasserie for a couple of days, or at least pay for a service on our snow plough. Just a thought guys! Joking aside, Jan and I look forward to meeting many of the dear friends that we have come to know over the years and, of course, to welcome some of the new faces that will no doubt become our dear friends in the future.

Change is all around us
Tullika Bhalla
The UK nursery industry moved into high gear in 2015 as consumers gravitated towards premium purchases helping to push double digit value growth across the year compared to a very volume-driven 2014, as Tullika Bhalla, business manager at GfK explaines
s we look back on 2016, we will see the year as the one that changed the economic course of the UK for some time to come. While we saw an initial bounce back from the Brexit referendum, it is clear that consumers have felt the impact on the currency, land footfall in retailer outlets, along with confidence in the economy remains low. However within nursery, numbers of sales continue to drive growth as more parents are encouraged to buy with the drop in prices. Categories driving the value growth within the industry include baby mobility categories, bathing and baby bedding.
A

About GfK GfK is one of the world’s largest research companies, with around 13,000 experts working to discover new insights into the way people live, think and shop, in more than 100 markets, every day. GfK is constantly innovating and using the latest technologies and the smartest methodologies to give its clients the clearest understanding of the most important people in the world: their customers. In 2012, GfK’s sales amounted to 1.51 billion euros. To find out more, visit www.gfk.com/uk or follow GfK on Twitter: https://twitter.com/GfK_en

non-food feeding products making it the second biggest baby-related expense. While the category declined in the last nine months, higher number of purchases of breastfeeding products, teethers and soothers has grown the size of the categories within Feeding. However, a six per cent decline in the value of highchairs has had an impact on the overall performance on the category.
Baby transportation With over one third of the baby budget spent on baby mobility options, purchase of a stroller and a car seat remains the most significant spend for a parent. Sales of iSize car seats as well as
highback and convertible booster seats continue to grow as the new regulations come into force this year. Stroller sales have declined in 2016 when compared to the previous year as parents are moving away from buying travel systems. Online purchases continue to grow across categories including Transportation. Despite going through a tumultuous year and concerns about the wider economy, it is unlikely that new parents will reduce spend on baby products. However, with prices likely to rise due to falling pound value and rising costs, promotions and upgrading customers by providing an option of feature rich products could prove to be the key to encourage spend in the sector.

focus HARROGATE
Happiness is Harrogate 28th - 30th March 2017 Now is the time to really focus. Harrogate International Nursery Fair is about to open its doors. arrogate Nursery Fair is the UK’s premier nursery trade event attracting manufacturers and suppliers of baby goods. Established for 43 years, the show has a reputation as being the first port of call for retailers and buyers looking for new and innovative baby products from pregnancy, baby goods and accessories to wheeled goods, infant car seats and nursery furniture. Harrogate guarantees a diverse array of products with almost everything you could possibly require for children from birth to four years, including pre-school toys and gift ranges. The main aspect to remember is that this is the only nursery trade event in the UK. This is a great opportunity to see many suppliers all under one roof. By attending you will be among the first to spot new trends, be able to view and experience first-hand new product ranges that are being launched, meet innovative new companies entering the market and also have the opportunity to mix with like-minded people. Many companies enjoy the experience of exhibiting at Harrogate. One such example is aden + anais. Melissa Cross, Sales and Business Development Manager Europe told Nursery Today: “We love attending the Harrogate show, it`s the largest nursery trade show in the UK. I love the buzz of being on a stand and showcasing our new collections across all our different brands.” James Coleman, of Venicci, feels the show is incredibly important to enable brands to connect with their customers: “Harrogate Nursery Fair is important to me as I get a chance to catch up with all our existing stockists that I don’t get to see throughout the year. I speak to everyone a lot on the phone but it’s always nice to meet face-to-face.”
H

You will find brand names in attendance who understand the strength of the show, for example, BabyStyle, Venicci, East Coast, Bebecar, Peg Perego, Skip Hop, Halilit, BeSafe, Clair de Lune, Hippychick, Slumberland and Clippasafe. Harrogate offers visitors the chance to see new and exciting products and the option to take advantage of any potential promotional offers. Additionally it offers retailers the opportunity to develop a relationship with suppliers. Plus, of course, there is the seminar programme where visitors can find out key developments and trends in the industry. Put bluntly, if you are serious about your business then attending Harrogate is a must. Missing opportunities and being left behind in securing brands, new products, new product categories, new fashion and styles are just some reasons that come to mind as to why this is a must-attend show. It is through Harrogate that brands who are entering the UK market can really engage with potential customers. Phil Howe, Country Manager (UK/Ireland), Peg Perego, is looking forward to showcasing their product portfolio. He said “As a new brand to the UK it’s important that the trade fully understands our range portfolio, features and benefits along with the quality in the craftsmanship and the brand values. Harrogate provides us with the opportunity to get in front of these influential people at this critical time for the business.” Visitors looking for new and exciting products are guaranteed to be spoilt for choice as there are a number of companies exhibiting at the show for the very first time with never before seen product ranges, as well as numerous new product launches. One example of a company who will be launching a host of new brands will be Cheeky Rascals. Founder Selina Russell commented: “Harrogate International Nursery Fair is a truly
exciting one for us this year as we will be launching new brands never before seen in the UK, including the brand new Izmi baby-carrier and the stylish home-safety range from Fred. “There will be lots of new launches this year as we continue to bring the very best products over to the UK, helping parents to make family life that little bit easier. The new launches include the clever and super cute Zazu penguin pals, Pam and Zoe, as well as some new BuggyBoard designs. We will have some great offers at the show.” There are many and varied reasons to attend and products and buying to one side for a moment, this could also be your opportunity to gain valuable information with regard to the highly discussed, topical and currently confusing, new regulations concerning child restraints and booster seats. We all know that there is considerable confusion out there, both in the trade and with the consumer, about these new regulations, especially since the new Regulatory supplement was entered into force on 9th February. However, good news - the Baby Products Association is working with major car seat manufacturers at Harrogate to give clarity to both retailers and anyone involved in this sector of the industry. A number of leading brands will be attending the show with the specific aim to educate visitors about the new regulations; plus safety in general in relation to these products. This currently includes Cybex from Columbus Trading Partners and Maxi-Cosi from Dorel, with further companies to be announced. These stands will be an important port of call for anyone serious about their business wanting to ensure they give their customers correct advice from an informed position. Visit Hall M upon arrival on the Tuesday for more information. www.nurseryfair.com

The beginnings Giuseppe Perego, the son of tenant farmers became a mechanical draftsman prior to developing metal fabrication skills in his spare time. His first nursery product designs were inspired by becoming a father in 1946 and he produced his first baby carriage when his third child, Lucio, was born in 1949. Giuseppe’s enthusiasm quickly spread throughout his family, recruiting his sister Severina, a talented seamstress, who dedicated herself to fabric coverings, while another sister, Matilde and his sister-in-law, Mariuccia, oversaw the administrative duties - operating from within his parent-in-laws’ home! Giuseppe turned his attention to manufacturing plastic pedal toy cars in the early 1960s and the toy business really took off with the first battery-operated toys in 1970. Over 20 years, Giuseppe committed everything to growing the business, travelling evenings and weekends to sell across Europe. In 1965 he opened his second international factory in Toronto which still exists today, followed quickly by another in Fort Wayne, Indiana which secured a bedrock that would enable global distribution. With strong family values running through the fabric of the business, it is now being steered by the second generation Perego family, Lucio and his wife Anna, while their three children work in operations in key markets. Phil Howe has been appointed Country Manager for the UK and Ireland and is proud to be representing this heritage brand synonymous with quality and integrity. From their ancestral base in Milan, the family puts great stock on the small but important role their products play in family life and creating lasting memories and are delighted to spread their infectious passion for quality craftsmanship to UK parents. Feature HARROGATE INTERNATIONAL NURSERY FAIR
Harrogate Trade Fair, but is it fair? Written by: Andy Crane, Managing Director, BabyStyle So here we are getting all our preparations ready for the annual pilgrimage to Harrogate and why wouldn’t we want to go. It’s such a beautiful elegant spa town and I can feel myself smiling just thinking about it. arrogate is a wonderful place to be able to go and meet retailers, see old friends and conduct business at what is now the UK’s only nursery show dedicated entirely for our amazing nursery trade. How great is it that we all support it wholeheartedly and year on year book our stands, pay our dues and reap the benefits that exhibiting brings to us, but hang on, do we? No we don’t! Year-on-year the show is getting smaller, with fewer stands but yet the visiting footfall in Harrogate stills remains roughly the same, how, why? Well, it has been noted that there appears to be a rather dubious practice by some repeat offenders of the booking of hotel rooms to tout wares or furtive meetings being held over a coffee. Come on everyone, do you think that it really is ethical for you to be attending these surreptitious social events which essentially are feeding like a bloodsucking parasite from the body of Harrogate International Nursery Fair? Perhaps I should put it another way. For example, you open your shop like you always have done, pay your bills to suppliers and the council and you take immense pride in your shop and all the wonderful goods inside. Even if it is tough out there, you do your best to help your
H
customers, day in, day out and try to smile through the day. Now, think of this, that’s all very well and good until the day someone appears on the pavement outside your front door and sets up their stall selling similar goods to what you’ve got inside, or possibly even worse, they come inside your shop grab the table in the most prominent position and help themselves to a skinny latte before hawking their wares through some glossy brochures. Would you be happy? I don’t think so! Surely though nobody would have the cheek and the brass neck to do such a thing would they? Oh, no wait, yes they do, it happens every year at Harrogate and, it would appear goes completely without mention or any sort of recompense! Could it be that 2017 will see us all wake up and smell the coffee to bring an end to this practice, which is essentially street hawking, unethical and, putting it bluntly, killing the show. So, if you value Harrogate and its importance in the nursery trade for all of us and want to see it continue and prosper then maybe have a rethink before you start accepting invitations that take place outside the confines of Harrogate International C Centre during show days and a give those folk clut clutching briefc briefcases full of tric tricks a wide b berth inside the International Centre.
See you all there – BabyStyle supports fair s trade! trad

BRAND MANAGER - EAST COAST NURSERY Why is Harrogate Nursery Fair important to you? Harrogate is our only UK show, so it’s our best opportunity to reconnect with all of our retailers in person and show our range to our loyal customer base. We treat them to drinks and nibbles. It’s an invaluable chance to let them get their hands on the real products, rather than looking at catalogue pictures or iPad presentations. Will you be running any show only offers? Yes, there will be offers across our range, including furniture and bedding. What can visitors expect when visiting your stand this year? As always, Harrogate is our opportunity to introduce our new products to our customers, so as you would expect, there are some exciting new things to see. There are new additions to the categories that East Coast is best known for, but we’re eager to keep a bit tight-lipped on this and invite our customers to come and see for themselves! We can reveal that the Say Hello range is expanding though, so there are some gorgeous new toys for people to come and play with.

talking shop NURSERY SUPPORT GROUP
Shop matters with NSG arrogate 2017 is just around the corner, with a new mid-week format, the addition of some newbies and the omission of a few names. I talk to as many people as I can, on all sides of the spectrum so, where many suppliers complain that the costs to exhibit are too high, others say tied into that is the (alleged) diminishing numbers. I can see the point… clearly the money would be better spent selling direct to the consumer at shows, and through own websites – that overrides the need to exhibit for trade, right? With that said, the onus is now on us, the indies, the visitors to the show, to support those who ARE exhibiting. The show has some of the bigger brands missing, but those that are exhibiting are supporters of the indies and many of them have proven this time and time again. Moreover the show promises to be packed with small suppliers; new and upcoming brands. Some of the brands that have taken off in the last few years, all started off exhibiting at Harrogate Nursery Fair, even if they have forgotten this. This year we are looking at Halls A-C and M all being jam packed; and the Royal Hall housing the VIP lounge, and hosting a drinks reception and the BANTA award ceremony. Harrogate is one of the most important events in my calendar and I urge fellow independents to jump on board and get behind it. Attend if you can, bring your teams. I’ll be there for the full duration, so if you see me, whether you are exhibiting or visiting – do say hi! Stop and take a selfie; Harrogate every year leaves an impression, and so many fun memories. I’ll be there with my partners in crime, and as many of the NSG posse that I can bring along. The details as usual guys: yas@babylandfife.co.uk don’t be shy See you in Harrogate! Yas x

Feature PRINCE LIONHEART
Spanning the decades Back in 1973 and with his last $400 to his name, Tom McConnell bought a bandsaw and some supplies, locked himself in his disapproving parents’ garage, and cut a pair of wooden rocking horses that his wife, Linda McConnel painted. Prince Lionheart was born. hen Tom and Linda McConnell started making rocking horses in the family garage, they had no idea that forty-four years later their company, Prince Lionheart, would be one of the leading manufacturers of baby products worldwide. Prince Lionheart designs and manufactures, but not just anything – they make products that matter, with the aim to making them safer or just plain better. During Prince Lionheart’s four decades, the company has been one of the leaders in the field with creations to help babies grow up happy and safe. Their patented Baby Wipes Warmer was the first of its kind in the industry and their Original Slumber Bear range comes with the only audio pacifier with actual intra-uterine womb sounds recorded by a microphone inserted into the womb of a pregnant woman. This familiar sound lulls babies to sleep in minutes; see it in its pride of place at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. They also invented products to make parenting easier such as the Original Seatsaver, the first and still bestselling car seat protector and now, new in 2017, Prince Lionheart’s Twist’r Nappy Disposable System with patented twist technology and speciallydesigned odour

The brand has truly developed into a one-stop-shop for key developmental phases of a child’s life from 0-2 years. “Prince Lionheart products continue to be designed with parents in mind; not solely to help make our jobs easier but also with our diminishing disposable income in mind by making good quality products at affordable pricing. “Prince Lionheart is committed to creating products that make a difference to families all over the world. We are parents too; we know and appreciate the challenges and try to solve them as best we can. Then to be offered the position UK Account Manager was simply wonderful; to be part of a company that I believe in and with such rich history, makes this new chapter in my life that much more exciting. I look forward to introducing our new products to all nursery retailers in the United Kingdom. “ Those babies back in 1973, laughing as they rocked on handmade horses, are now having babies of their own, some even with grandchildren! Profile: WE MADE ME
We Made the Foundations to Nurture It seems like only yesterday that BabaSlings Ltd took on an exciting new identity. Now more than two years on We Made Me is a brand that parents connect with around the world. As the company embarks on the next phase of its strategic expansion we take a moment to reflect on its journey so far. lthough We Made Me has experienced significant global developments, most recently securing distribution across Canada and the United States, the tribe has an unfaltering loyalty to its founding country. This year, as well as evolving its global ambitions, communicating with mums and dads in the UK is a high priority. Working with some of the UK’s much loved celebrities including Giovanna Fletcher and Helen Skelton, as well as teaming up with a group of trusted social influencers such as The London Dad, the We Made Me tribe are ensuring they talk directly to the all-important parents. We Made Me understands that every parent’s experience is unique. Although staying true to its founding principles, We Made Me has successfully evolved into new categories in 74

the last couple of years. Focusing primarily on products that are intrinsically nurturing, it was a very natural progression to support nursing families. Not only does the new product range put a stylish and innovative twist on some of the popular parenting essentials, it understands the need for parents to be free – portability is fundamental to this collection. A striking nursing pillow that doubles as a bag, and a truly unique arm pillow for comfortable feeding and cuddles both at home and on the move. While We Made Me embrace the beauty of nursing the designers recognise the preference for some to have privacy while out and about – completing its range with a playful print for a classic nursing cover, We Made Me certainly have accessories for feeding products covered! Completing the new product range is the charming and playful Wild Pocket Muslins. Not willing to settle with another me too product, the creative genius’s at We Made Me have captured a whole lot of fun and joy into each muslin. Each design has a built-in animal head, which not only will become a familiar comforter for little ones; it cleverly doubles as a handy pocket to tuck away the muslin when not in use or when soiled.

Interview LAMAZE
Amaze with Lamaze We had the opportunity to speak with Pedro Sousa, UK Brand Manager at TOMY to find out a bit more about the ever growing Lamaze brand. Firstly tell us a little about the Lamaze brand – how was this created? Created by child development experts, Lamaze toys pioneered the developmental infant category. The award-winning collection is designed to spark little triumphs at every stage of baby’s development and is licensed by Lamaze International - the most trusted resource in pregnancy, birth and early parenting. The range encourages baby to grow and develop through features that promote together time between parent and baby as well as activities that encourage exploration and independent learning. Each high quality toy features bright colours, friendly faces, crinkly fabrics and contrasting patterns, making them a favourite of parents, babies and experts for more than two decades.
Our team of product designers work closely with specialists in child development, paediatricians, teachers, and child psychologists to ensure all Lamaze toys are engaging, age-appropriate, and fun. Products are designed in conjunction with Lamaze International, America’s leading childbirth and early parenting organisation, and Yale University child development specialists Drs. Jerome and Dorothy Singer. The Lamaze Toys Infant Development System guides consumers through the different phases of their baby’s development, allowing them to select Lamaze toys that fit naturally into his or her play patterns. From baby’s earliest weeks through the active toddler years, they’ll always find a Lamaze toy that is just right.
You experienced growth in 2016 with regards to brand awareness – how did you achieve this?
What are the benefits to retailers who stock this brand?
Last year we launched the Lamaze UK Facebook page, which already boasts over 28,000 fans. The brand also reinforced its online presence and embarked on a hugely successful partnership with one of the UK’s top parenting websites, BabyCentre. The campaign featured sponsorships, mum testimonials, display advertising and a series of product reviews from influential parenting vloggers. Public relations was another area of strong focus in 2016 our hugely successful celebrity ambassadorship programme with Coleen Rooney achieved over one million pounds’ worth of media coverage through product placement, interviews, editorial features and video Q&As.
Our retailers have reported that Lamaze contributes to the accelerated Infant Toys sales growth;, driving conversion and increasing transaction spend. Lamaze fits several consumer needs and different consumption occasions. It is a premium brand ideal for traveling and also suits key milestone moments such as baby showers, baby’s first bestie and baby’s first Christmas. Lamaze has unique characteristics that please a wide range of consumers and our research shows that 60% of UK consumers have bought Lamaze as a gift*.
Are you expecting the brand to grow further here in the UK throughout 2017?
We have an exciting collection of Mini Teethers launching in April, including the popular Freddie the Firefly and new characters Ellie the Elephant and Oscar the Penguin. Each teether has a soft plush body with crinkles, rattles and squeakers, along with wings or ears. The bright colours, multiple textures and satin ribbons encourage baby to explore, We’ll be introducing some very exciting products to our popular Clip n Go range in May. The collection will be expanded with new characters Phillip Pelican, Waddling Wade and Flipping Felipe – all perfect for playtime on the go. In summer we’ll expand our popular gifting and activity toy segments with new releases including Repeat Petey, Stacking Starseeker and Cosimo Concerto.
We envision 2017 will be another strong year for Lamaze and are very excited for what the year has in store. Lamaze is our top priority and we’ll continue to allocate a big budget and put the full strength of our marketing teams behind the brand and support new launches to ensure we continue to lead in the infant toy market.
What type of consumer awareness initiative are you currently running? This year we’ll reach over 313,000 pregnant mothers by gifting them with Lamaze products in their Bounty packs. We’re expanding our social media presence by providing followers with helpful tips and advice. We’re also continuing our partnership with the UK’s top parenting website, planning a strong online presence throughout the year and will soon be launching new retail programmes as well as cross category opportunities. 76

Wooden it be great The beauty of wood is apparent in many homes through décor and furnishings and it appears that parents just can’t get enough of it when it comes to their little ones’ toys y also! ooden toys continue to experience a high level of popularity and consumers totally buy into this category. With parents looking for products that perhaps remind them of their own childhood, we are seeing a strong desire at present for toys made from traditional materials. Sophie Bonnet, Export Manager at Le Toy Van expands: “We have found that wooden toys have an enduring appeal, fundamentally there is the appeal of the natural materials and wooden toys are aesthetically pleasing, delightfully tactile and eco –friendly. They echo back to parents and grandparents with the warm glow of nostalgia of a happy childhood.” It’s not only parents that buy into this category, wooden toys also offer great gifting appeal. Judith Stark of Halilit told us: “Wooden toys tend to be traditional and generate a nostalgic feel for parents and grandparents making them popular gifting choices that are universally valued.” Judith also agrees that these are linked to childhood memories and also encourage a more traditional play element. “Wood has unique properties, always very tactile and warm to the touch. Being a natural material, there is an appeal that resonates with those who are looking to adopt a low-tech lifestyle that aligns with being closer to nature. Furthermore there is also a recognition that wooden toys are durable so they will stand the test of
W

time, often being passed down through generations.” We asked Sophie whether we are seeing any specific trends emerging. “Yes, role-play is a strong trend. Letting children explore the world around them and re-creating everyday stories. Woodland is another popular trend and this theme runs throughout our ‘Petilou’ collection, tactile toys that are inherently educational, encouraging early learning. All beautifully packed they make ideal gifts for little ones.” And what about perceived value, is this another reason why they make such great gifting products? Judith would say yes and for a number of reasons! “Wooden toys generally do have a higher perceived value than their plastic counterparts; there is an association with craftsmanship when looking at a wooden product and although in reality most wooden toys are mass produced, it is generally easier to appreciate the skill that has gone into the design and this translates into being prepared to pay more for a wooden toy.” There is also an ecological aspect to wooden toys as some companies choose wood that has been farmed in a green or sustainable way. We asked Judith her views on what the importance is of wooden toys that are produced by using wood from sustainable sources? “We are all becoming more aware of our impact on our planet and the finite resources that are becoming depleted.

Judith Stark, H alilit
“There are strong messages from many sources regarding the need to be socially responsible and to choose products with minimal impact on the environment. Producing wooden toys from sustainable sources is becoming a must rather than a choice and being able to advise customers that they are choosing a product made from sustainably sourced wood is a very powerful marketing tool.” Is it time for you to get on the wooden wagon? It is clear that parents are seeing the value of wooden toys – their educational value, their sturdiness, their longevity and the fact that they do not need batteries. Wooden toys are timeless and can be suitable for a wide age range of children offering something unique and giftable.

Blagging bloggers or incredibly inspiring influencers? Mummy blogging has become an increasing big area in nursery – let’s take a closer look. remember being approached for the first time by a lady representing herself as a ‘mummy blogger’ in 2008. I listened politely as she warbled on about her ‘blog’ and how she was reaching out to other mums and hoping to help them make purchase decisions by ‘actively’ reviewing baby products. I figured it was unlikely to catch on and politely declined her kind offer of me sending her a £1,200 coachbuilt buil pram so that she could take som grainy photos with her 1.8 some meg pixels camera and upload them mega to B BlogSpot, along with a few hun hundred ‘hand-crafted’ review words. jus didn’t see it as something that I just wou catch on. would L than 16 months later I’m at a Less blog blogger outreach that we organised in the R Rainforest Café at London Troc Trocadero, buying them lunch and dem demonstrating our latest products! Two things I learnt that day. Mum blogging was becoming a Mummy i big industry. Never organise a session whe you want to speak to a crowd where in a room that has amazon rainforest thu thunderstorm and monkey noises boo booming out through speakers every few minutes. Rolling forward in time to the p present day and there are tens of thousands of parenting bloggers in the UK alone. An army of snappers, scribers and sharers ready to use to promote your brand or business?

Firstly, not all parenting bloggers are doing what they do in the hope that a brand will contact them. Many of them just enjoy writing about this very precious time and love keeping a record of their children and family life. Secondly, not all of them that that are #prfriendly are actually of any use to a brand or retailer because they can’t write very well and aren’t blessed with the gift of attractive photography. It’s the same in any industry; there are great nursery retailers and terrible ones. For every sublime marketing consultant, there are five more that sell snake oil. Thirdly, and this is the bit that keeps running around my head, we don’t know as an industry what to make of them or do with them. I am party to far too many conversations where a creative parent blogger gets refused a product because they only have 800 followers, whereas the very average wordsmith mum gets the goodies because she has 4,000 followers. I am sat in the middle of email discussion
after email discussion where the role of some PR agencies has become reduced to just being a herder of bloggers. This a very exciting time to be working in the nursery industry. The quality of products and the imagination of the designers behind them is mind-blowingly excellent right now and it’s worth taking stock of this fact as you stroll the stands in Harrogate this month. It’s time that the marketing and PR catches up and becomes more creative and compelling than it currently is and has been. These great goods deserve better communication. A suitable starting point is to stop just giving products out and hoping for a decent write up and to start crafting campaigns or briefing bloggers on more creative projects. The good bloggers, of which there are many, will welcome a more interesting challenge. Better content will be created and such content has far wider reaching legs than yet another ‘words and photos’ WordPress post. I’ve been impressed recently with some of the ideas coming out of Native Media, such as their ‘Tea & Biscuits’ videos, or where they give GoPro cameras to parents to get them to film their day(s) using a particular product. I am equally impressed with what Winstanley’s have been doing with their blog over the last year by creating original content themselves and drafting in bloggers here and there for an external perspective. Inspiration is all around you. Bloggers aren’t just blaggers of products. Many of them have a creative urge but it’s not up to them to present stunning ideas. It’s up to us, as an industry. Proposing meta-shifting projects to bloggers will move your business into interesting new waters and will help you to get noticed a lot more. It will also help the bloggers involved make the gear shift up from blogger to influencer. Stop being so concerned with follower counts and domain authority and find the creative solution. Great content gets shared, period. Now, can I interest you in this genuine once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to purchase your very own bottle of Ross’s patented snake oil?

focus ECO-FRIENDLY
Going green Eco friendly products are growing in popularity – it’s all about sustainability, health and our carbon footprint. roduct ranges that are environmentally friendly are fast becoming a core feature of many companies’ ethos. More and more parents are looking at ways of making the environment a better place for their children to grow and develop. If a parent is looking at organic food, then this will carry through into other areas. For example, they will look at materials used in their baby gear (clothing), nappies and their impact on landfill and of course what lotions and potions they are using on their little ones delicate skin. Cotton farming is one such example that has a huge impact on the environment. With more and more clothing or bedding manufacturers turning to the use of organic cotton or other materials, such as bamboo, we can see that these products are growing in popularity. Information from the WWF illustrates that about 20 million tons of cotton is produced each year in around 90 countries. Cotton represents nearly half the fibre used to make clothes and other textiles worldwide, with much of the rest coming from synthetic products. When we look at agriculture, you may be surprised to note that this is the largest source of pollution in most countries. 2.4% of the world’s crop land is planted with cotton and yet it accounts for 24% and 11% of the global sales of insecticide and pesticides respectively. Unsafe use of agricultural chemicals has severe health impacts on workers in the field. We asked Esme Westmoreland, Harrison Spinks if she feels that consumers are better educated with regard to cotton production and the effect this can have on cotton pickers health worldwide? “To be honest we know that consumers understand the benefits of buying cotton as a quality material or garment and they are educated to recognise that it is great for keeping you cool in warm weather. However they are not aware of the processes involved to grow and process cotton into the fabric they are used to seeing it as. “Customers recognise that organic means better for the environment but they do not understand exactly why organic cotton is better – grown without the use of pesticides, using less water, encouraging crop rotation and allowing smaller farmers to have viable businesses.” So how can we better educate the consumer? “Highlighting the benefits of choosing organic cotton over regular cotton is a key way to help
P
84

consumers understand products and potentially reflections in the price of a product,” said Esme. “Harrison Spinks Baby is working hard with its NaturalStart collection of 100% natural cot mattresses to explain the benefits of choosing natural materials over man-made fillings such as foam and polyester. Not only will natural fillings keep their baby cooler, they are better for the environment because they are fully recyclable at the end of use.” What about trends? Are we seeing a more positive attitude to organic or eco-friendly products? “Organic and sustainable products have certainly become increasingly popular over the years as people are better educated to become more conscious of the environment in which they live. “With the recent uncertainty in global politics following Brexit and Trump, parents are increasingly more considerate about the purchases they make. Not only are they looking to buy products that are sourced closer to home, they’re also looking for products that will last rather than being a quick fix.” Skincare is also a growing area, which is illustrated by The Soil Association who have just launched their 2017 Organic Market Report on the organic beauty and wellbeing market, which reflects the continued growth in organic and natural beauty (+13% to £61.2 million). Soil Association certified beauty brands are also on the up, and increased by 22% in 2016. We need to remember that if we are seeing a general rise in consumer demand for organic and natural skincare beauty products that this will naturally drift down into products suitable for babies. With our skin being our largest body organ and also being capable of absorbing up to 60% of the ingredients we apply to it, then this could be a major contributing factor to many skin conditions that we experience. The vast majority of bath and body products
available today contain commonly-used synthetic ingredients such as Parabens and SLS; these synthetic ingredients have been recognised to cause irritation in some people. With more children suffering from a variety of skin conditions, for example, eczema, psoriasis and cradle cap, it is understandable that parents seek products that won’t be harsh on their little one’s skin. Of course, with so much activity at present within the eco sector, cloth nappy systems are also a growing category. On average, each baby will use around 4,000 nappies before becoming potty trained. Each one of these nappies are sent to landfill accounting for up to seven per cent of black bin waste causing a major issue for not just the local authorities but our environment. We spoke to Michelle Smith, marketing manager, Close Parent whether she felt consumers are now better informed when it comes to the use of disposable nappies and their impact on landfill? “Parents are definitely more informed about the benefits of using reusable nappies and are keen to reduce the environmental impact of having a baby,” said Michell. “By diverting thousands of nappies from landfill parents can see the real value of making the switch and with many councils now extending the length of time between refuse collections, using washable nappies will continue to grow as an attractive proposition for many parents.” Would it therefore be fair to say we have seen an increase in their use? “We are seeing a steady increase in the number of people choosing reusable options for their little ones. More people are drawn to the idea of using a cloth nappy system as they can see how easy they are to use and the appetite for new and fashion led prints continues to drive growth in this area too.” Armed with so much information, it appears that ‘going green’ is here to stay.

Doing good The Do-Good Baby Company live by three core values: good for babies, good the planet, and good for those in need. They noticed a clear gap in the market for a baby brand that not only sells amazing products, but also makes an active effort to better the world in which children grow up in. This is why they pledge that 10% of their company sales to charities - it’s the key principle of their ‘do-good’ philosophy, and it always will be. With air pollutants on the rise, natural and organic skincare has never been so important. Our skin absorbs everything put onto it, and because a baby’s skin is so much thinner and more delicate than an adults, using natural products is of the utmost importance. Products that use artificial ingredients are much more likely to agitate skin prone to eczema, psoriasis, cradle cap, and other skin conditions, so by choosing natural products that contain large amounts of quality moisturising ingredients, opposed to cheap ‘bulkers’ and ‘fillers’, you can be sure that you are feeding your baby’s skin with the very best. Feature CLOSE
Celebrating 10 years of Caboo hugs with Close... t seems a long time ago since Caboo made its way into the world and it has been one big hug ever since for Close. Their much loved Caboo +organic has reached double digits this year and in celebration of their ever evolving brand they have launched a limited edition print collection, the first foray into print for the brand. Hester MacAnara, Business Development Director for Close explains. “As we are now on our sixth Pop-in print story, we are well versed in exactly what a Close baby led print looks and feels like, but creating our new parent led print stories to celebrate 10 years of our award winning Caboo was something new and exciting for the extended Close team. “We have taken direction and inspiration from not only current trend lines but also the environment and the many countries in which Caboo now successfully sells. We have developed four beautiful stylistically

contrasting core prints with a sensibility for sophisticated, mum led patterns, motifs and co-ordinates with, we hope, something for everyone. We have given each of our four prints a girl’s name, carefully chosen to embody the identity of the print.”
Sofia - With its soft tessellating shapes, infil graphic style and multi-tonal design it emanates a real Latin vibe whilst being both practical and highly wearable. Olivia – This colourful iconographic floral repeat takes on a subtle Asian twist with its lotus shaped flowers and jade palette, we think it is complimented perfectly with the smaller ditzy co-ordinate print. Orla - This print imbues a bold Scandi feel with its scaled back two tone palette and geometric wireframe design, the classic navy paired with this striking accent is both on trend and wearable.
10 years in the making, the evolution of Caboo tarting off life as the Close Baby Carrier in 2006, the original Caboo featured in the Channel 4 series “Bringing Up Baby” and has been one of the nation’s best loved soft carriers ever since. In 2011 Close mixed it up a little when they rebranded their carrier as Caboo +organic, the highlight of the year was to be awarded an accolade by Which? who recognised Caboo +organic as the UK’s premier soft carrier and the only soft carrier to date to be awarded Best Buy Status. Close also embraced the wants of Dads everywhere with the launch of Caboo DX, the Daddy of soft carriers because they believed that great baby-wearing shouldn’t just be for Mums. Fast forward a few years and they were hand-picked by the UK’s biggest parenting charity, NCT (National Childbirth Trust) to collaborate with them on the exclusive and affordable Caboo NCT, which quickly became a best seller across the globe and enabled even greater accessibility to soft carrying for parents everywhere. More recently Caboo dx+ has evolved to become a new stylish 3-in-1 hybrid carrier (their first front to back carrier) with some clever thermo regulating properties, better support, fit and function. 2015 saw the introduction of a new curved design and gorgeous new double faced fabric range Caboo +organic

and the introduction of Caboo +cotton blend, offering an alternative material option for parents at a price to suit. That same year Close were overjoyed to be awarded a Gold for Best Baby Carrier/Back Carrier in the Mother and Baby Awards, the Oscars of the parenting world. In 2016 they complimented the range even further with Caboo DXgo, their ultra compact front and rear facing carrier allowing parents to transition from their newborn Caboo carrier into a carrier that provides the right support at the right stage and age for their little one without any compromise. In 2017 Close continues to set the benchmark for soft carrying as the UK’s premier soft carrying brand with their first foray into printed designs appearing on the high street in Spring with some of their key UK retailers, including John Lewis, JoJo Maman Bebe and Mothercare, so look out for them in-store and online soon!

Emily - This regimented and understated floral repeat gives a nod to great British values, classic by design and palette, it is beautifully contrasted with this co-ordinate perfect for any discerning English Rose. 10th Anniversary print - This print stands alone from their core four in every way, taking its direction and inspiration from urban street art. They specifically wanted a stand out print to celebrate ‘happy mums & dads’ baby wearing and natural parents everywhere. Close have chosen to keep this print exclusively for their loyal network of sling libraries in the UK as they feel it embodies all the fun, freedom and precious moments that baby wearing can offer parents. Here’s to the next 10 years, filled with lots more good ideas, to make life a little easier for all the wonderful Close parents out there! Tel: 01992 554045 Web: www.closeparent.com nursery today

retail TECHNOLOGY
Local search engine optimisation and mobile devices We are now living in a world where the average teenager is walking round with more computing power in their pocket or handbag than was used to put Man on the Moon! martphones are now so ‘smart’ that they can talk to us and understand our questions. All of this technological loveliness is driven by the easy availability of connection to the World Wide Web via WiFi hotspots and 4G. Should we really be surprised then that smartphones are the driving force behind modern eCommerce? The latest research from Google lays out what kind of effects the not so humble smartphone is having on our daily lives. In brief: • 88% of consumers use search engines to find local information on a smartphone. • Searches are done on smartphones for things like business address, business hours, product availability and directions to the business. • 50% of those who found a local business via Google search on a smartphone visited that business within one day. • 18% of local searches on a smartphone led to a purchase within one day. • 60% of searchers look for location information and call buttons in Google search ads, especially when searching using a smartphone. All of this research from Google tells us that it’s now massively important to not only optimise for mobile devices but also that local

Feeding Footfall Modern businesses need to think not only about multichannel selling and multichannel marketing but also about the routes that people take to find the products being searched for. This is even more important than usual when we are thinking about local optimisation and the use of smartphones. Going back to the mid-1990s to a time when mobile eCommerce didn’t

yet exist, routes that website users may have taken to find an eCommerce website and complete a purchase were limited. Tablets and mobile phones had limited functionality at this time and Google AdWords wasn’t yet launched. If you wanted to find an eCommerce website to buy a product you had to get there via a search engine on a desktop or laptop machine then complete the purchase on that same machine. Things are now very different. Website users in 2017 tend to do a lot of research on potential purchases via smartphones and tablets before making a purchase, but also the very nature of mobile devices means that people can use their device to get information on a potential purchase whilst they are in the geographical area of a ‘bricks and mortar’ store. This means searches online via a mobile phone can be the pre-cursor to a traditional in-store purchase! In this way smartphone usage is driving footfall for physical business locations, in some instances bypassing eCommerce totally, which is why eCommerce retailers need to make sure their web stores are optimised for local search keyphrases. This of course does not mean that eCommerce is irrelevant. Users are increasingly using mobiles for research, perhaps visiting a store to see products and then actually purchasing online via a different device or directly on a smartphone. I have even personally witnessed people buying on a store’s eCommerce website whilst standing in that store’s physical location!
high tier keyphrases like ‘oak furniture’, but only if local optimisation of the website has been done.

Contextual Search and Local Search Results Ever since Google realised that the context of a search was just as
important as the actual search itself, we’ve seen a massive move towards mobile devices being the real drivers of eCommerce. Many years ago, if you were to ask an online marketer if it was a
good idea to optimise for extremely short, high traffic keyphrases such as for example ‘oak furniture’ you would have got a very definite negative response. In 2017 however, due to the refinement of Google’s search engine towards contextual search, it’s actually a good idea to optimise pages in a website for these traditionally ‘difficult to rank for’ keyphrases, purely because Google is not only taking into account the keyphrase search itself, but the physical location of the searcher and the device the search is being completed on. It’s now possible for many different businesses to rank well for traditionally
Optimising a website for local searches is actually pretty easy. Apart from the obvious things like making sure your business address is available on every page, it helps tremendously if you add locally-focussed content to the website, via pages within the website or an on-site blog. Adding location information via Google My Business (incorporating Google Maps) gives a clear signal to Google that your shop is located in a geographical area as are adding your website to local business citation sites like Yell, Bing Local and Hotfrog. Making sure your business has well maintained social media business pages on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Google+ also can make a massive difference to how Google sees your website for local searches. Once all of these things are done, approach local businesses for good quality links. Local community, business and even government websites will sometimes provide top quality, contextual links for your eCommerce website which will help your local search engine results massively, so it’s worth the effort to get out and meet the neighbours!

The Baby Products Association’s team is once again gearing up for one of the trade association’s most important events of the year – Harrogate International Nursery Fair, which takes place from 28th to 30th March 2017. This event is not only a fantastic opportunity for the team to meet up with members and provide information and advice about the services it offers; but provides the platform for celebration. Once again, the Baby and Nursery Trade Awards (BANTA) winners will be announced straight after the show on Tuesday 28th March – in the stunning Royal Hall of the Harrogate International Centre. These prestigious awards, sponsored by Nursery Today magazine, are a true accolade to those shortlisted and of course the winners, as they are judged by industry experts and colleagues and point retailers in the right direction when choosing products which are likely to stand out from the crowd at the show. In addition, the four 2017 Concept & Innovation Awards finalists will be presenting their new product ideas on the trade association’s stand and the judges will decide on two winners on the first day of the show. These will also be presented alongside the BANTAs on Tuesday evening. The Concept Award finalists are Charlotte Lonngren with ‘The Baby Band’ and Lisa Walford with the ‘Safe Sleep Seat’. Charlotte’s Baby Band product idea is a simplistic wrist-band which parents can wear to keep track of babies’ feed and sleep times. Charlotte explained that she feels guilty that when her twins were very small the smartphone app she used to keep track of her babies’ feeds was very complicated and distracting and caused her to concentrate for much too long on the app when she felt she should have been interacting with her children. Her product idea provides the basic information without unnecessary complications and excessive technology. Lisa Walford, an ex-police officer who has seen many car accidents involving young children, came up with her product idea – the Safe Sleep Seat – when her own children were very small. She explained that often she would strap the children into their car seat awake at the beginning of the journey and they would fall asleep causing their heads to fall forward. Whilst driving it is impossible to safely recline the seat and it was not always convenient to stop to tip the seat back into a sleeping position. She has spent many years developing a remote control reclining car seat which can be quickly reclined at the touch of a button. The Innovation Award finalists are Lucy Bostock with her ‘Adventure Belt’ and Deborah Sher and Gemma White with ‘SleepKeepers’. Lucy’s product idea came from having an adventurous five-year-old who was prone to
disappear during outings, but resented being treated like a ‘baby’ with the use of traditional reins. The Adventure Belt clips from the adult’s belt to the child’s belt – which incorporates a fun pouch accessory – giving parents the security of keeping the child close by, but the child equality in that they are no more restricted than the parent. Deborah and Gemma’s SleepKeepers’ were designed after numerous sleepless nights when their children moved from cots to beds. They found that they wriggled and duvets – and sometimes even children – ended up on the floor. SleepKeepers are magnetic accessories which keep the duvet firmly in place, yet allow the child the ability to get in and out of bed if they need to. The Concept & Innovation Awards are sponsored by law firm 3Volution and the two winners will receive £750 worth of legal fees.
Major brands explain new car seat regulations at Harrogate One of the Baby Products Association’s most important initiatives – benefitting the entire nursery industry – is information sharing; and Harrogate International Nursery Fair will once again provide the platform to deliver pertinent seminars and aid discussions with experts. There is considerable confusion about the new regulations concerning child restraints and booster seats, especially since the new Regulatory supplement was entered into force on 9th February. The trade association is working with major car seat manufacturers at Harrogate to give clarity to both retailers and anyone involved in this sector of the industry. The Association confirms that a number of leading brands will be attending the show with the specific aim to educate visitors about the new regulations; plus safety in general in relation to these products. This currently includes Cybex from Columbus Trading Partners and Maxi-Cosi from Dorel, with further companies to be announced. These stands will be an important port of call for anyone serious about their business wanting to ensure they give their customers correct advice from an informed position. Visit Hall M at Harrogate International Nursery Fair for more information.
