The Daily News is brought to you by Gifts Today and Greetings Today magazines

Business is bright and breezy as the sun shines on another vibrant and jam-packed Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival. After just a few short days, many exhibitors told the Daily News they were happy with the quality of this year’s visiting retailers. “What a remarkable few days it’s been already,” says show director Cleere Scamell. “We’ve had a great response to the new Gifts for All area (Hall D) and to the fresh brands in the ever popular Design Point 2 and newly-expanded Design Point 4. Here’s to a great final few days!” Andrew Nettleton, director of Ashleigh & Burwood says the team has been “busy and on our feet from open to close” throughout the show. “I think there was some initial uncertainty after the Brexit result, but in spite of that it’s not dampened the industry’s spirit,” he adds. “Compared to other shows, you always feel like you’re at the heart of it all here at Home & Gift.” And it’s a similar story on the Joe Davis stand in Hall Q, with commercial director Paul Hooker telling the Daily News: “It’s been as good as ever to see so many of our regular customers, and we’ve made lots of new ones, too. Our LED gifts have been phenomenally popular, and the Jingle Bell snoozies have been selling like hot cakes. We’ve even got the weather!”

We cover the entire nation, though the northwest region is most popular. And you can personalise places, too.” Rebecca Jackson, co-owner

Bake at Home G172 “Baking is such a British pastime. Add to this the fact that all our high-quality ingredients are sourced from the UK, all handpacked and handmade here in the UK, and we are so very British. Our artisan baking kits are geared towards all ages, we have a dedicated kids’ section too, and we feature seasonal and themed kits too.” Vickie Krzyzanowski, founder

Melt DP1-40 “The market is coming around to buying British once more! Absolutely everything that we put into our candles is sourced in the UK and most of that in Lancashire. We also make everything ourselves. This is very important to us.” Trevor Hatch, co-owner

Lots to celebrate at Xystos!

Stand Q13

On the recent distribution agreement with Xystos, managing director of Yardley of London, Quentin Higham (right) was keen to “work with experts in home fragrancing” who also offer great gift shop and garden centre channels. “We were really impressed with what they’ve done for WoodWick and Kringle. And we like them!” adds Quentin, who is pictured with Henri Davis, chairman of The GA.

Having signed an agreement to distribute two Woods of Windsor brands, Xystos’ director Tom Sykes (pictured left) sees the very English heritage of the products as “a natural fit as 65 per cent of our existing customer base sell a similar type of product”. And so far in the show, so good. “Woods of Windsor has been phenomenally well received, we think it will be a roaring success,” he adds. Tom is pictured with Home & Gift show director Cleere Scamell.

“Working with Xystos is great. I find they are really professional and helpful and we love stocking their beautiful products in our garden centres,” says Aoife McCarthy, junior buyer, Notcutts (right), pictured alongside Julia Simmons, national accounts manager, Xystos.

The aroma of new Aroma Home have launched not one, not two, but one hundred new products at Home & Gift. “Not only have we launched our new Snuggable Hotties with a display unit for both these products and our successful Cosy Hottie range, we’ve also unveiled new Fragranced Hot Water Bottles and Gift Sets to offer the widest range of heatable gifts in the marketplace. We’re also expanding our other gifting ranges to offer an all year round gifting solution for independent retailers,” says sales manager Jenny Stirling. Account manager Marie Curran is pictured with the Snuggable Hotties range on DP1-27.

With a successful two days under his belt, managing director of Xystos, David Lewis, says the show has gone really well, with Xystos “well up on last year”. David adds: “The cloud seems to be clearing over Brexit and now we’re looking forward to figures doubling each month up until Christmas”.

Cleaning up Ally Stevenson is a fighter — not only has she battled the dragons on Dragon’s Den and survived, she’s also battled cancer and survived! She’s at Home & Gift with her daughter Kerry and her company is Clean Heels Heel Stoppers. “Fearne Cotton and Martin Kemp mentioned us on BBC Radio 2 recently!,” Ally tells the Daily News. “You can use the heel stoppers to stop you from sinking into grass at weddings, the races — anywhere outdoors, and they protect wooden floors too.” You’ll catch Ally and Kerry on stand G142.

Appetite for puzzles Those hungry for some puzzling fun should pop by the Gibsons stand to see the brand-new Pringles and Vintage Kellogg’s jigsaws. “The Pringles puzzle is double sided with a devilish Pringle stack on the reverse,” says sales and marketing executive Samantha Goodburn, pictured with midlands sales agent Stu Nicholas. Pretty much everything that goes into our products is locally sourced and what we can’t get locally, like shea butter, we make sure we get fair trade. We even grow a lot of ingredients ourselves, such as lavender and St John’s Wort. And we then make everything ourselves. Our packaging is also reyclable or reusable. We’ve got these brand-new gift tins for hand and feet, which visitors are loving.

After being made redundant, Tosin James re-discovered her passion for both home and fashion, deciding to set up her own home interiors company OT&T Home Interiors. Debuting this year at Home & Gift, Tosin says her brand is “all about bringing fashion into the home with a particular emphasis on African culture, so there’s a lot of head wraps and hats.” Designs of African women in

colourful headwraps feature on rugs and wall art, and statement rugs. “They are designed by myself but handmade in India, while the wall art and cushions are handmade in the UK,” says Tosin. “Being at Home & Gift has been such a big learning curve, everyone has been so lovely and given me so much advice.” Visit Tosin at OT&T Home Interiors on stand D5.

The company was started for conservation purposes mainly, to help the bees and butterflies. We scattered seeds but they don’t always grow so we thought ‘what can we do to help’ and came up with this ancient way to protect the seeds from the slugs and ants. The tins have seedballs which you just scatter on the earth, there are six different wildflower mixes and three edible — salad, herb and tea. We were started by two academics who decided to do something more practical. We’ve only been going for four years and are in Kew Gardens, and the National Trust has taken us on. These are super stocking fillers, it goes crazy at Christmas because everyone wants that ethical gift.

One of the most insightful comments made by a former colleague when asked about the difference between a massed produced hospitality product and a handcrafted range of fine bone china was emotion. I’m lucky enough to still be working with handcrafted ranges that have a soul and a quality rare these days and yes, emotion is a huge part of the buying decision… Come and see some of that quality on stand Q42a Global Luxury Brands.”

Dawn Stathers & Angela Turnbull, Sweetheart, Anlaby near Hull

“

We’re looking for everything from cards and gifts to jewellery, Christmas, gardening, homeware, and even furniture. We need new stock for the whole shop. We come open minded and we’ve found so many new companies we’ve not worked with before, and new stock from people we haven’t dealt with for a while. Junction 18, who we haven’t worked with for about four years, and they’ve recently changed their style so we’ve ordered loads. We’re just really excited to find new things at the show. We tend to build collections, putting together a few items from one company and something from another so long as it all blends. We’ve just come to the greetings hall – we have 200ft of card racks so we need a lot of stock.

”

Karen Mace, Behind The Red Door, Nottingham I’ve done a little buying already, I’m after stocking fillers and the little quirky bits for secret Santa. I still have the NEC and Top Drawer to look at but there’s more gifty things here. I’ve been to La De Da Living for my vintage and Fab Funky does crazy prints which are brilliant. I’m now going into the main gift halls for the homeware and glass. I’ve also been to Junction 18 and Shruti. In Nottingham we have loads of students so I need that low to mid price point as they all buy each other presents but their budget is limited so I like to cater to them — and we give them a 10 per cent discout because we’re nice like that.

Chris Fox & Julia Keeling, Wishes of Cudworth, near Barnsley

“

We love the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere at Harrogate. It’s a must for buyers and a showcase for Yorkshire hospitality. We started the day off with a positive meeting with Creation Express. Dreamed up by the team at K2 Greetings, this personalised gift and card service is a new area for us at Wishes. We feel that our card ranges cover most requests but it’s impossible to have a design for every occasion — the captions we’re asked for still surprise us! Personalised gifts always perform well for us. We always enjoy the whole show experience, seeing new faces and meeting with some of our regular suppliers in person. Some highlights for us include Best Kept Secrets, WishStrings and Heart & Home where we’re getting our Christmas order in already.

Retail interview

Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival Harrogate 2016

Ply me with champers! Learning on the job is the best way to hit the ground running as a buyer in the greetings and gifts industry. Chris Rushby, the new greetings, stationery and book buyer for Norfolk department store Jarrold, is looking forward to his first time at the Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival. As a first-time visitor to Home & Gift, what have you heard about the show? That first-time visitors are plied with champagne and caviar on every stand! And that the show’s both inspirational and friendly. How do you tackle a trade show, do you plan in advance or take it as it comes? A bit of both. Inevitably there’s a list of stands and suppliers one wants to visit but, equally inevitably, the eye gets caught by something you had no idea would be interesting. Which stands are you really looking forward to checking out? I’m still pretty new to buying these categories, so any company I haven’t so far made contact with is going to be particularly useful. What’s your top tip for attending trade shows? Wear comfortable shoes, sit down once in a while, drink plenty of water. How long have you been with Jarrold and how did you arrive there? About three and a half years, most of that time as book buyer – I’ve worked in the book industry in that kind of role for 30 years. The additional card and stationerybuying responsibilities were added six months ago. What’s the most exciting part of your job? Seeing a new product for the first time and knowing – or at least having a strong hunch — it’s going to be a winner. How important is the cards and stationery side to Jarrold and what percentage of your turnover does it contribute? About four per cent of the main store’s turnover, but we also sell stationery in some of the other Jarrold branches — and there’s even a specialist Jarrold stationery shop. What brands of cards and stationery does Jarrold sell and which sell well? Woodmansterne manages a significant chunk of the day-to-day card range for us and that relationship is a positive and successful one. Beyond that, we deal with a whole range of suppliers. How many people are on the buying team, do you have separate teams or buyers for different products, such as stationery and gifts? I buy stationery, cards and pens, as well as books, for the main store. Another buyer has responsibility for gifts. A couple of colleagues buy for one or other of Jarrold’s specialist shops locally and there’s some overlap of the ranges we all select.

What makes a good buyer for Jarrold, and do you work on your own initiative or are you briefed? The whole team of buyers meets fairly regularly to compare notes, talk about trends, opportunities and mutually significant issues. It’s surprising how much commonality of opportunity and issue there can be between the buyers of, say, furniture, beauty, fashion and stationery. If someone has a product, card or gift, they want to pitch to you, how should they go about that? Email crushby@jarrold.co.uk What do you look for in a new product? Something that complements the existing range, while at the same time having something innovative, new, different about it. Something that comes from a supplier who will probably produce other, equally good products over time. In a department store such as Jarrold, is there ever any conflict on whether a product should go in stationery, gifts or another section? Just occasionally — usually a sign a product’s got potential. It’s when everyone says “after you…” that you need to worry! What are customers buying at the moment – is there anything that stands out as a bestseller? The Showtime range of light-up letter greetings cards from Really Good has been a particular success recently. Pressing the little button to make the lights light up is addictive! What are the emerging trends, and how have trends changed over the past year as well as in the time you’ve been with Jarrold? Last autumn Jarrolds took on the Kate Spade stationery range for the first time, very successfully. It may not be a trend, but it’s certainly given us permission to look at more upmarket ranges than we’d perhaps have considered before. What’s the item that you think people would consider the most surprising product Jarrold stock in the stationery department? People are often surprised that two of the greetings card ranges we stock – Maurice & Maude and The Animals Of – have both been created by people who work in the Jarrold store.

21 years of new and exciting ideas There are many reasons that Music Gifts and Elements gift brands will be celebrating at this year’s Harrogate Buyers’ Festival… Harrogate Home & Gift is always an annual retail highlight, but the 2016 Buyers’ Festival is shaping up to be extra special for The Music Gifts Company. This year the brand, known for producing stylish and unusual gifts, is celebrating its 21st birthday, while Element — its much lauded line of men’s gifts — will celebrate its first birthday. And not only that but co-founder of both brands David Gee is looking forward to this year’s show being a real family affair, with his 19-year-old son James on hand to help out. To give each brand the best exposure possible at the Harrogate International Centre, separate exhibition stands for Element and Music Gifts will stand at either side of the entrance into Design Point 4. “In order to show the individuality of each brand, we have actively decided to display them separately for the first time,” David explains. “The last twelve months have proved very exciting for us with the launch of our men’s range Element, and we are thrilled to have reached our 21st birthday. To celebrate we are launching a number of new products across both ranges for the show, including English-made washbags with pewter zip-pulls, elegant ballpoint pens, novel bottle openers, pewter jewellery and mugs.” “Plus on a personal note, my son James is helping me at the show for the first time. He wasn’t born when we first exhibited and now he’s 19!” They might have been in business for more than two decades, but Music Gifts still loves to create new and exciting ideas for music lovers, building of course on the huge success of their innovative number one bestseller, The Chopin Liszt. Plus with a great summer of sport firmly underway, there’s also something for everyone in the Element range — covering cycling, golf, cricket,

“In order to show the individuality of each brand, we have decided to display them separately for the first time” tennis, fishing, football, rugby, running and so much more! At this year’s Home & Gift the companies will be showcasing a range designed by awardwinning illustrator Vikki Gibson which is themed around pop, blues and jazz. It covers mugs, coasters, birthday cards and wall clocks. David reveals: “We worked with Vikki for Element and are so thrilled with her innovative designs that we commissioned her again to produce a range we’ve had in mind for some time. The results are brilliant, she is such a talent and we are lucky to work with her. “For both Music Gifts and Element we have been working on gifts which span both ranges. At this year’s Home & Gift, there is a new collection of very smart English-made washbags using a 3D pewter image for the zip-pull. The pewter perfectly complements the bag and makes the item unique. “As well as the washbags, there are 3D bottle openers which come individually gift boxed and upmarket ballpoint pens, again individually gift boxed.” The novel bottle openers including stunning bicycle and golfing designs and are ideal for sports-lovers, simply to be used at home, with friends or on the move. They have an RRP of around £8.99.

Beautifully-designed socks are another huge seller for Music Gifts and there is a new pair of brass instrument socks being launched at Harrogate. Other new items include both silver-plated and pewter jewellery. All the gifts and more will be available to view at the Harrogate Buyers’ Festival as well as on the company’s new trade websites - www. musicgifts.co.uk and www.elementgifts.com And, as David says: “Harrogate is our favourite show and it’s always great to see so many happy familiar and not-so-familiar faces there.”

Interview

Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival Harrogate 2016

“It’s all about showcasing fantastic British skills” Unveiling his new cook and homeware range, professional and celebrity chef Tom Kerridge sat down with the Daily News yesterday Stand DP2-35 Known for his warm West Country accent, friendly down-to-earth manner and championing of all things British, including the traditional English Pub, professional and TV chef Tom Kerridge has made his Home & Gift debut. The inspirational chef, who owns the only pub in the UK to be awarded two Michelin stars, The Hand and Flowers in Marlow, is at Home & Gift to unveil his British-made cook and homeware range in collaboration with The Great British Exchange.

Welcome to Home & Gift Tom, you’re here to launch your first range. Why now? We’ve been planning on doing something like this for a long time, but it never felt like the right time. I never wanted to just put my name to something that didn’t have the same values and ethos I have with my own business. It was kind of a marriage that we met in the middle; we were looking at the same time Matt Hopkins of The Great British Exchange was looking.

Why The Great British Exchange? We have the same belief in and reasoning for our businesses, it’s about showcasing fantastic British skills that have been lost. Being involved with them has opened so many doors and avenues to meeting people with outstanding characters.

What does each party bring to the table? I was hugely involved across the board in bringing everything to life. It’s very important to me that this range is a reflection of the hard work we have put into The Hand and Flowers for the last 11 years. Everything must stand the test of time.

And is this what the range is all about? Yes, it communicates an honesty, and hopefully a trustworthy solid brand that will stand the test of time for years to come.

What’s the inspiration behind the range? All the products in the range needed to be products I would use myself, things that work on an everyday basis. The range is aimed at people who want to use professional, high-quality, Britishmade products in their homes that will last a lifetime; people who enjoy cooking and sharing food in their homes and want products that will be practically useful and a pleasure to use.

In the range you use materials and expertise from across UK, how important was this? For me it was the most important thing. I consider what I do as chef as a trade so to find other tradesmen working with the heart, soul and love of their product, no matter what it is, is equally important. It creates a great synergy so that between us we can help showcase British produce to its best, irrespective as to whether it’s food or manufacturing. A huge amount of effort has gone into finding these fantastic manufacturers. We’re trying to breathe new life into Great British traditions, standing firm and not compromising on quality, while showcasing the best Britain has to offer. Take the knives, all made in Sheffield. The knife market is a hard one to break into and is full of Japanese, French and German quality products, but British knife craftsmanship is some of the best in the world and should be celebrated.

The material for the textile products has come from two companies in Lancashire – Lantex and John Spencer. Paul, who runs Lantex, wanted to recreate the butcher’s apron worn by the character Lance Corporal Jones from Dady’s Army and so he and the team at John Spencer put their heads together and created the material that we’ve now used in our range.

Tom Kerridge

THE RANGE The premium range, which includes knives, textiles, ceramics, wood, enamelware and pans, brings together skills and crafts from around the UK: knives are made in Sheffield, textiles and enamelware from Lancashire, wood from London, ceramics from Shrewsbury and pans from Birmingham.

So it’s a range with provenance, is this what consumers want today? I think more and more people are taking an interest in what they put into their bodies, what they eat and the affect it has. Also, the interest in small-scale producers, artisan products, especially ones with history, community and personality.

What’s your favourite product in the range? I’m a big fan of all of them but as a chef we’re always fans of knives and pans, and the pans themselves are used here at The Hand and Flowers.

Finally, it’s your debut at Home & Gift, what are you most looking forward to? Very much looking forward to being here, it will be great to see lots of other products, different producers and different things to do with manufacturing and the industry, maybe pick up a few gift ideas for family and friends too.

Tom worked with manufacturers and craftsmen across the UK on his range

A quirky, traditional, heavenly brand of success Heaven Scent is celebrating 21 years of exhibiting at Harrogate this year, and as Sarah Welsh discovered this is one family company with big ideas…

With the home fragrance corner of the gifts industry ever growing, it’s more important than ever to stand out from the crowd. And where quintessentially British company Heaven Scent is concerned, that means building on traditional methods, a wealth of products that are at the same time forward thing and yet nostalgic, and brilliant customer service — whatever size the retail customer. Quite simply, for this Bradford on Avon based brand, success means that all-important personal touch. And this is literally the case for design and marketing manager Sarah Bellis, who has been with Heaven Scent for around five years, but first had contact with the brand when she stocked their products as owner of a local gift shop. Soon his brother Tom came on board, and together they have built the business into something very special. The company now boasts more than 75 scents across its product ranges, which include candles, reed diffusers, home fragrances, soaps, lip balms and a coveted range of body products. The natural body product range is available in a smaller, select range of fragrances, and the collection’s packaging is currently being redesigned. For Christmas, orange clove and cinnamon, winter scent and nutmeg and cinnamon always sell very well, and looking ahead to Spring/Summer 2017, buttercup and wildflowers are wonderful scent options. “Beyond Harrogate the rest of this year is looking very exciting for us as well. We’re moving to new premises in the village of Holt within a few weeks to house our growing team, which now numbers up to 50 people and we’re always adding to our range. DON’T MISS… The Eco Trail If you’re keen to buy green this year, look out for the Eco Trail tags on 50 exhibitors selected by TV presenter and eco champion Oliver Heath as the greenest products from the eco-friendly exhibitors at the Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival. Oliver says: “With thoughts of the future and how we can individually influence it ever present in our minds and the media, it’s clear that individuals and big business are taking the lead ahead of those that we select to govern us. Increasingly I’m seeing that people and businesses with a conscience are setting out to do more. It’s more than just minimising their own footprints – by reducing, re-using and recycling, they are looking to become a force for good, and for change. Businesses with a real eye to the future are looking to become restorative and to give back, be it to the environment, or to communities, by delivering better products with real benefit. Many of those I’ve selected for the Eco Trail are doing that, creating beautiful, stylish and functional products that will delight your customers while promoting a greater good.”

products Looking for something a little different? Scaramouche + Fandango on stand G189 may have just the thing. Here are some of their top products: 4-in-1 Sports wash Hair, body, face and shave in one handy tube. Perfect as a stocking filler for men who love the gym or reluctant groomers.

Making the most of it Want to make the most of your visit to the Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival? Here Ian Bradley, independent greetings card and giftwrap sales agent for the Midlands, gives his top tips for having a great show. So, here we are at Harrogate Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival once again. It has to be my favourite trade show of the year – a laid-back approach in very pleasant surroundings, located in a lovely town with glorious summertime weather, hopefully! To make the best of your visit this year, here are my top tips:

Shave brush An ultra-soft shave brush made with new-generation, synthetic fibres that closely resemble real badger hair. It’s the perfect tool for lathering up.

1

If you’ve not done so already, then take a small amount of time to plan your visit. This can be said for all trade shows as that 10-20 minutes spent planning can save you hours later.

2 Triple pack All the skincare essentials for men in one convenient gift set. Includes a face scrub to clean the skin, a luxurious shave cream and an award-winning Hydrator to complete the skincare routine.

I would highly recommend you walk around the whole show if possible. The key thing is to make sure you see any suppliers that are an absolute must for you. At H&G there’s a big focus on the Design Point tents, and rightly so. They do an excellent job of bringing together fabulous design-led product in light and airy surroundings. But, since they’re so popular, not all suppliers will get a stand in the DP tents. New suppliers and those returning after an absence will probably have to find a home somewhere else. By walking as much of the show as possible you’re much more likely to find hidden gems you were not expecting. This is especially useful if you’re on the lookout for those all-important new suppliers.

3

Make sure you visit the Debut & Spotlight Hall G as here you’ll see a really interesting mix of both gifts and greetings cards from new and upcoming designers and makers – every year I’m more and more impressed with this hall.

Travel pack All the grooming essentials in travel-friendly sizes, including a shampoo, body wash, shave cream and the awardwinning Hydrator.

Design Point 5 – or DP5 – is a must visit as this is now the greetings card hall. Added last year, the organisers have now declared DP5 the new home for Greetings & Stationery. It sits along the front of the Majestic Hotel alongside DP1. There have been mixed emotions about the greetings location since leaving its long-term home below Hall A, four years ago – the “dungeon” as it was affectionately known. This new location is excellent and it’s a very easy hall to walk. If you have greetings cards on your mind then you’ll certainly find something fabulous here.

5

This show is located in the centre of a wonderful spa town. If time allows then you really should have a look around. Maybe take afternoon tea at the world-famous Betty’s or a stroll through one of the lovely open spaces – strays as they’re known locally.

PS

: Lots of the fabulous shops in town will be having their summer sales… Here’s to a really great, fun and positive Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival. Ian Bradley Ian Bradley Agencies, T: 07905 597498

Ian’s top tip Walk as much of the show as possible to find hidden gems that you aren’t expecting.
