Along with our sister publications Nursery Today, Christmas in January, Gifts Today, Toys ‘n’ Playthings and Tableware International we shall be organizing an Industries’ Cup that will see players from all those industries vying for the ‘Industries Cup.

Depending on the response we shall also have individual cups for each of our magazines. The day will begin with a nine hole Texas Scramble, followed by the afternoon individual Stableford, team four-ball and yellow ball competitions.

With good weather guaranteed we shall end the day with a barbeque and presentation of trophies.

Cost for the day will be £110 with bacon rolls and coffee/tea from 8 p.m.

The Hilton Hotel offers very good rates for staying overnight which I will be giving very soon.

They say that all work and no play, makes Jack a very dull boy, so forget work for the day and join us at Puckrup Hall

A barbeque for the presentation of trophies concludes the day and to keep the occasion as relaxed as possible the dress code is casual allowing those wanting to leave for home after the presentation a reasonably early evening journey, leaving those of us staying over able to discuss the day at the bar till closing time. Whilst most teams come as team four-balls, individual golfers are very welcome.

Finally, summer is just around the corner! As this issue goes to press, the UK is basking in a heatwave, and the gift industry is gearing up for a busy new season ahead. Retailers are preparing for Father’s Day - one of the major gifting occasions of the year (as our Shop Talk contributors testify) - while buyers and suppliers alike are counting down to the next round of trade shows.

June’s calendar is packed with key industry exhibitions, including PG Live and Exclusively Show, while July sees the spotlight turn to Harrogate for the Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival. But this summer also marks the launch of a new addition to the event circuit: The London Home Fragrance Show, making its debut on July 9 and July 10 at the Business Design Centre in Islington.

Launched by the Honegger Group - an international exhibition organiser with more than 50 years of experience - the event promises to bring together the entire home fragrance supply chain, offering a platform for brands, distributors, and retailers to connect, discover and source.

You can find out more about this new venture in our annual Home Fragrance & Wellness Supplement, which accompanies this issue. This year’s edition is particularly significant, as we celebrate 10 years of producing the supplement - a milestone that reflects the continued growth of the sector and the enduring demand for trusted insight into this vibrant and ever-evolving category.

The timing could not be better. As an official media partner of the show, we are especially looking forward to attending the inaugural event. As Rob Sherwood, Joint CEO of Honegger Ltd, explains: “Sourcing is becoming more selective, more intentional, and more commercially demanding. Retailers and buyers in the home fragrance sector are under more pressure than ever to find products that sell and stand out. The London Home Fragrance Show exists for exactly this shift, giving buyers the chance to meet makers, understand products, and source with confidence.”

Whether you’re already stocking home fragrance and wellness products or considering expanding into the category, we hope our supplement proves both informative and illuminating. And if you’re visiting The London

Home Fragrance Show, please do stop by our stand and say hello - we would love to see you there.

Elsewhere in this issue, we also preview online trading platform The Gift Fair UK, which returns on September 7.

Finally, you will have spotted that our Cover Star is Gibsons Games, which is in jubilant mood after an impressive hat-trick of wins at the recent Gift of the Year Awards. With a heritage spanning four generations of the Gibson family, the company has evolved with the times while staying true to its core mission: creating joy through first-class jigsaw puzzles and games.

Known for its commitment to quality and sustainability, Gibsons continues to produce products designed to last, while partnering with likeminded British brands that share its values.

One standout collaboration is with fellow family business The Art File. Recently certified as a B Corporation (like Gibsons), The Art File shares Gibsons’ passion for craftsmanship, creativity, and responsible business - making the partnership a natural fit. Together, the two companies created ranges that contributed to two of Gibsons’ three accolades.

Managing director Kate Gibson told us: “It’s a

huge honour for a family business. Our team has worked incredibly hard over the past two years on these products, and to see them shine is absolutely the icing on the cake.

“As we all know in our industry, no year is the same and no situation is permanent. We’ve learned never to take for granted the wins along the way, and we’ll be continuing to celebrate this one for some time to come.” Turn to page 26 to find out more.

We hope you enjoy this issue and the accompanying supplement. As ever, if you would like to join the suppliers and retailers sharing their insights with Gifts Today, please get in touch. Drop me a line at clare@lemapublishing.co.uk or connect with me on LinkedIn - I’d be delighted to hear from you.

Teeing up new connections…

Lema Publishing’s annual golf day for the Christmas and nursery trades returns on July 1 at Hilton Puckrup Hall Hotel & Golf Club in Tewkesbury. This year, we’re extending the invitation to professionals from the gift, greeting, toy and tableware industries, making it a fantastic opportunity to connect, compete, and unwind in great company.

The day centres on fun, friendly competition, and relaxed networking. Proceedings begin with a ninehole Texas Scramble in the morning, followed by lunch and an 18-hole individual Stableford competition in the afternoon, with team four-ball prizes up for grabs.

From 7pm, a relaxed barbecue and prize-giving ceremony will round off the day, allowing those travelling home to depart at around 8pm if needed.

With excellent room rates available at the hotel for those wishing to stay over - and the weather usually on our side - the event is set to be another memorable occasion.

Entry costs £110 per person, including the barbecue. To book your place, call Malcolm (Tiger) Naish on 0788 9991513 or email malcolm@lempublishing.co.uk

Unlocking new

New data from The Gift Fair UK organiser Xpofairs shows how online trade shows are attracting a new generation of buyers, extending brand reach and strengthening connections across the gift industry in a changing retail landscape

The gift industry has always been about people. Relationships sit at the centre of everything, built over time through conversations, introductions, and trust. For many, trade shows remain the cornerstone of that process, offering a chance to meet face to face and see products up close.

That is not changing. What is changing is how those connections can begin, and who is being reached in the process.

The Gift Fair has been developed as an additional route to market, not a replacement for traditional shows. It sits alongside the existing calendar, giving brands another way to get in front of buyers and start conversations that can then continue in person.

In this sense, it is closer in spirit to platforms such as Faire and Shopify. It is not a substitute for the physical experience, but a practical tool that supports it.

Growth and engagement

What has stood out so far is the response from buyers. Numbers have grown show by show. The first trade show welcomed just under 1,000 visitors. The second reached 2,600. This next edition continues that trajectory, reflecting steady and transparent growth rather than short-term spikes.

More importantly, those buyers are engaging. They are actively exploring brands, making introductions, and using the format in a way that feels purposeful. For many, it offers a more flexible way to discover newness without the time and cost commitment of travelling to a major show.

Younger buyers

It is also bringing in a different type of buyer. Data from recent Gift Fairs show that 65% of users are accessing the show via mobile. This, along with other data, points to a younger, more digitally native audience - many of whom are running online or hybrid retail businesses.

These retailers are still buying, still discovering, and still building successful businesses. But they are doing it in a way that does not always align with the traditional trade show model. In fact, many of them have said they have never been to a trade show before.

This is where The Gift Fair is finding real traction. It’s helping brands connect with a newer generation of buyers who may not yet be part of the established circuit. These are engaged, commercially active retailers who are often quick to respond when they find the right product.

Positioning

Importantly, this is not about replacing one audience with another. It is about widening the net. Established buyers remain at the heart of the industry and will continue to do so. What this format offers is access to an additional layer of demand that has previously been harder to reach.

At the same time, the focus remains firmly on introductions rather than transactions. This is not about replacing the handshake with a click. It is about creating that first point of contact. The format is built to encourage conversations, allowing buyers and brands to connect, ask questions, and explore opportunities in a natural way.

retail demand

Many of those conversations go on to become face-to-face meetings at physical shows. In many cases, that is the intention from the outset. When those meetings happen, there is already some familiarity in place, making them more productive.

Building momentum

There is also a practical benefit in terms of timing. Rather than relying solely on key moments in the trade show calendar, brands can maintain visibility throughout the year. New collections, seasonal ranges, and bestsellers can be shared on an ongoing basis, helping to keep momentum between trade shows. For an industry that has traditionally worked in cycles, this adds a useful layer of continuity.

“This is not about replacing the handshake with a click. It is about creating that first point of contact”

None of this takes away from the value of a physical show. The atmosphere, the energy, and the chance encounters remain a vital part of what makes this sector so unique. If anything, tools like The Gift Fair help to strengthen that ecosystem by bringing more people into it.

More buyers are discovering new brands, a broader mix of retailers is entering the space, and there are more opportunities to connect across the trade. For a community-driven industry, this is a positive step forward.

The power of

Joe Davies managing director Paul Hooker reveals how the company’s award-winning collaboration with Fox Under The Moon has become one of the standout licensed gifting success stories of the year

Paul, what inspired Joe Davies to collaborate with Fox Under The Moon, and what first attracted you to founder Stacey McNeill’s work?

The collaboration began very naturally. From the moment we first saw Stacey’s work, there was something authentic and emotionally honest about it. The illustrations and wording immediately stood out because they genuinely connect with people and, in today’s market, that emotional connection is more important than ever.

At Joe Davies, we’re always looking for ranges that independent retailers can truly believe incollections that not only look beautiful in store, but that customers instinctively respond to and want to buy for meaningful reasons. Fox Under The Moon does exactly that.

How closely did Stacey work with the Joe Davies team in developing the collection?

Working with Stacey has been a genuine collaboration from day one. Protecting the heart and integrity of the brand has always been extremely important to both sides, and Stacey has worked very closely with our design and product development teams throughout the process.

That close working relationship has helped create a collection that feels completely authentic to the original artwork and messaging, while also translating beautifully into commercially successful gift products.

Stacey’s artwork is known for offering comfort, encouragement and emotional connection. How do you translate those qualities into commercially successful gift products?

The key has been staying true to the emotional core of the brand. Consumers instantly recognise authenticity, particularly within sentiment gifting. Every product has been developed with the intention of retaining the warmth, positivity, and reassurance that people associate with Fox Under The Moon.

When customers pick up a mug, a ceramic heart, or a piece of sentiment jewellery, they are not simply buying a product; they are buying a feeling, a message, and often a meaningful connection with the person they are gifting it to.

How did you decide which product categories best suited Stacey’s illustrations and words?

We focused on product categories that naturally lend themselves to everyday life and gifting moments. Mugs, keepsakes, keyrings, and jewellery all offer opportunities for people to carry those messages with them or incorporate them into their daily lives.

The wording and artwork also translate beautifully across multiple finishes and materials, which gave us confidence that the range could work strongly across several key gift categories, including jewellery.

Joe Davies managing director Paul Hooker with Fox Under The Moon founder Stacey McNeill at the awards ceremony

collaboration

What has the retailer and consumer reaction been like since the launch of the Fox Under The Moon collection?

The response has been exceptional. Independent retailers immediately understood the emotional appeal of the collection, and consumers are clearly seeking gifts with meaning, positivity, and reassurance behind them.

Retailers have told us the products create strong emotional reactions in-store, with many customers spending time reading through the messages before making purchasing decisions. Have any products emerged as strong bestsellers, and have any surprised you?

The mugs, ceramic hearts, and sentiment jewellery have all performed exceptionally well, although the breadth of success across multiple categories has probably been the biggest positive surprise.

The collection has generated strong repeat purchasing on the jewellery already, and the bookmarks started repeating immediately, which is always one of the clearest indicators that a sentiment-led range is genuinely resonating with consumers. Ceramics have also sold in very well and are just landing now.

This marks Joe Davies’ first ever sentimentbased licensed range. How important is sentiment and positivity in gifting trends right now?

Sentiment and positivity are incredibly important within gifting. People increasingly want products that say something meaningful, particularly in a world that can often feel uncertain or overwhelming.

Gift-giving has always been emotional at its core, but consumers are now placing even greater

value on authenticity, kindness, encouragement, and emotional connection.

Licensed ranges continue to perform strongly in the gift industry. What sets Fox Under The Moon apart from other licensed collections?

What makes Fox Under The Moon different from many licensed collections is the depth of emotional connection behind the brand. These are not simply attractive designs. They are messages that people genuinely relate to and often buy for very personal reasons.

There is a sincerity and honesty to Stacey’s work that people instinctively trust, giving the collection a very di erent feel to more trenddriven licensed ranges. Stacey already has more than 330,000 followers across social media, and it’s clear from this engagement that people connect strongly with the brand.

Congratulations on winning the Branded and Licensed Gifts category of the Gift of the Year Awards 2026. What did that recognition mean to the team?

Winning was a proud moment for everyone involved. It was wonderful recognition - not only for the collection itself, but also for the collaboration between Stacey and the Joe Davies team. A great deal of care has gone into protecting the integrity and emotional heart of the brand throughout the development process.

In your view, what role do award programmes like Gift of the Year play in helping retailers discover new collections? They play an important role within the industry because they help highlight creativity, innovation, and standout products to independent retailers who are constantly searching for something fresh

and meaningful for their customers. They also help give independent retailers additional confidence when selecting new collections, particularly within licensed gifting. What advice would you give retailers looking to create impactful displays and maximise sales with sentiment-based gift collections like this one?

The most important thing is allowing customers time and space to engage with the products. Sentiment gifting works best when displayed in a warm, relaxed, and storytelling-led way. Cross-merchandising complementary products together also works extremely well, helping consumers assess their gifting needs across di erent price points and products.

Are there plans to expand the Fox Under The Moon range further, following its success?

Absolutely. The strength of the brand, combined with the emotional loyalty it creates among consumers, gives tremendous scope for future development. We see significant opportunities to continue growing the collection into additional categories, while remaining completely true to the heart and integrity of the Fox Under The Moon brand.

Stacey reflects on...

The brand’s beginnings

Fox Under The Moon began during the Covid lockdown when I unexpectedly found myself out of work and simply wanted to put some hope and comfort into the world. I taught myself to draw and started sharing whimsical illustrations and uplifting messages online - never imagining it would become a business.

Around that time, a close friend was struggling, and I remember being unable to find a card that said what I truly wanted to say. That sparked the idea for our first greeting card range, and a wider mission to help people find beautiful ways to say the things that really matter.

I certainly never imagined we’d one day have licensed collections, though I do remember wandering through the Joe Davies stand at my first trade show and quietly thinking: “One day, we’ll be part of that.”

Working with the Joe Davies team has honestly exceeded every expectation. It’s been a true collaboration, and seeing the brand grow through partnerships like this has been incredibly special.

the emotional heart of the brand and brought that same care and thoughtfulness into the collection.

Connecting with audiences

Why do audiences connect so strongly with the emotional and uplifting themes within Fox Under The Moon? I think it’s because life can feel complicated, and most of us are simply trying to feel understood. Fox Under The Moon doesn’t shy away from di cult emotions - grief, uncertainty, loneliness, and selfdoubt - but instead tries to gently sit alongside those feelings and remind people they’re not alone.

The Gift of the Year win

People connect with honesty and emotional warmth, and in a busy world there’s something comforting about gentle reminders that it’s okay not to have everything figured out. At its heart, the brand is really about helping people feel seen.

Seeing the products come to life

Turning emotion into meaningful gifting

Seeing my illustrations and messages translated into products that people can give as meaningful gifts has been incredibly emotional in the loveliest way.

Fox Under The Moon has always been about helping people express love, comfort, encouragement, or support when words can feel hard to find, so seeing those messages translated into gifts people can hold onto feels very meaningful. I love the idea that comfort can live in everyday moments - whether that’s a mug someone reaches for each morning, or a keepsake that quietly reminds them they’re loved.

What has been so lovely about working with Joe Davies is that they’ve really understood

There have been so many highlights, but the mugs have been especially exciting because they’re probably the number one product my audience has asked for over the years, and Joe Davies has created them beautifully.

The jewellery collection has also been an absolute joy, because it allowed us to bring Fox Under The Moon into a completely new space in a way I could never have achieved on my own.

One personal favourite, though, is the boxed bookmarks. I recently visited The Notting Hill Bookshop in London for a signing event and was told they’d been flying off the shelves.

As someone who creates books as well as illustrations, there’s something particularly lovely about seeing Fox and Moon finding their way into people’s reading lives too.

The Gift of the Year Awards recognition means a huge amount. To see the collection recognised in this way feels incredibly humbling. Gift of the Year is such a respected award within our industry, and for the Joe Davies Fox Under The Moon range to receive this recognition feels very special.

More than anything, though, it feels like recognition of collaboration. Joe Davies has cared deeply about protecting the heart of the brand while bringing their own expertise and creativity to the collection, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve created together.

Home & Gift 2026

Home & Gift feels like our trade show home now, and it’s the only event we exhibit at each year. This year we’re approaching things a little di erently by creating more of a Fox Under The Moon brand hub, where visitors can see not only our own collections but also some of our wonderful licensed ranges, including Joe Davies and The Art File.

Many customers come to us initially for sentiment-led paper products, so it will be fantastic to introduce them to the wider gift and jewellery collections too, and then point them towards our friends at Joe Davies, who are exhibiting just across from us.

There’s something rather lovely and full-circle about that, especially remembering that years ago I stood looking at their stand, quietly hoping we might one day be part of it ourselves.

Turning pressure into progress

Our

industry has proven its resilience through extraordinary challenges. Now

it’s time to turn that strength into growth, says Gemma Sault, managing director of The Giftware Association

The giftware and homeware industry has proven itself remarkably resilient. Through economic uncertainty, supply chain disruption, rising costs and shifting consumer behaviour, businesses have adapted, innovated, and endured. That resilience deserves recognition. As we face another di cult trading period, the question is: how do we turn that resilience into sustainable growth?

Refocus your business mindset

Resilience can look like caution: holding back spend, tightening ranges, and delaying investment. Discipline matters in uncertain markets, but growth requires a mindset shift. The businesses growing now aren’t abandoning ambition - they’re refocusing it.

Growth today is more measured and strategic, but it is still growth. Shift planning from “what can we cut?” to “where can we invest intelligently to unlock demand, improve margins, and build long-term value?”

Get forensic with the fundamentals

Strong commercial fundamentals are non-negotiable. Businesses that turn resilience into growth have absolute clarity on margins by product and channel, cash flow and working capital, stock turn and sellthrough, and the true cost of doing business.

Stock discipline is a key growth lever. Too much stock ties up cash and limits agility; too little risks missed opportunity. Audit your numbers regularly. If you can’t clearly explain where your profit comes from, start there.

Stay visible when others go quiet

When demand tightens, marketing is often the first budget cut. In reality, it should be one of the last. Brands that continue to grow stay visible, relevant, and confident. This doesn’t require bigger budgets, but smarter execution: clear positioning, strong imagery, consistent messaging, and a compelling brand story that resonates with buyers and consumers alike.

Silence creates risk. Presence creates opportunity. Ask yourself: if a buyer or retailer searched for your brand today, would they immediately understand your value?

Strengthen

relationships

and routes to market

Growth in the current climate is built on collaboration, not transaction. Strong relationships with retailers, buyers, and suppliers create shared resilience. Open conversations around pricing, lead times, and demand forecasts build trust and help manage pressure collectively.

Diversified routes to market also reduce risk. Wholesale, direct-to-consumer, export, and alternative retail formats all play a role in creating balance and flexibility. Identify one key relationship to deepen, and one route to market to strengthen or test this year.

Engage

with policy, don’t absorb it silently

Rising employment costs, regulatory complexity, and operational pressures directly impact growth potential. These challenges a ect pricing, hiring, and investment decisions every day. This is where collective advocacy becomes critical. Trade associations ensure business realities are heard by policymakers, and push for proportionate policy that supports confidence and growth.

Use collective strength to accelerate growth

Engage with The Giftware Association - share challenges, respond to consultations, and add your voice. At a time when it’s easy to become inward-looking, trade bodies like us provide insight, connection, and perspective - helping businesses spot opportunities earlier and avoid costly mistakes. Growth rarely happens in isolation. Treat insight, connection, and advocacy as strategic growth tools.

From endurance to momentum

Our industry is powered by creativity, entrepreneurship, and quiet determination. Small teams are making big things happen by refining ranges, tightening numbers, improving storytelling, and investing in sustainability - even when it would be easier to wait.

Resilience has carried us through extraordinary challenges. Now let’s turn it into momentum, step by step - so we can continue creating products that help people celebrate, connect, and care.

The call to action is clear: refocus your mindset, invest in your fundamentals, stay visible and confident, build stronger relationships, and engage collectively through your trade association.

Resilience got us here. Let’s take the next step together and build a future for this industry that we’re proud to pass on.

“Sense-Abilities”

Pantone

Color Institute director Leatrice Eiseman outlines how multi-sensory experiences, culture, and emotion are shaping the future of home interiors

Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2026

The global colour authority Pantone has named PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer as its Pantone Colour of the Year for 2026. This ethereal hue is described as a billowy white that evokes a sense of serenity.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said: “At this time of transformation, when we are reimagining our future and our place in the world, Cloud Dancer is a discreet white hue that o ers a promise of clarity. The cacophony that surrounds us has become overwhelming, making it harder to hear our inner voices. As a conscious statement of simplicity, Cloud Dancer enhances focus and provides release from external distractions.”

Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, added: “We are living in a time of transition, with people seeking truth, possibility, and a new way of living. Cloud Dancer is an airy white hue that exemplifies our search for balance between our digital future and our primal need for human connection.”

The most directional colour and design trends for the home feature the calm, comfort, and joy consumers are seeking, according to colour expert Leatrice (Lee) Eiseman, speaking at The Inspired Home Show 2026.

In her annual keynote, Lee discussed the influences on colour trends and revealed the seven palettes in the Pantone View Home + Interiors 2027 forecast.

Lee is a colour specialist and serves as executive director of the Pantone Color Institute and director of the Eiseman Center for Color Information and Training.

Trend influences

Focused on “Sense-Abilities,” Lee’s keynote highlighted the need for sensory integration and unexpected colour applications that consumers can incorporate into their homes. The goal, she said, is to o er ways to help create respite from an increasingly noisy and overwhelming world.

Lee told the packed audience that fashion, film, and technology are key influences on future colour trends for the home, along with nature and culture. “There are emotional and psychological aspects of colour,” she said. “Trend has reason behind it.”

The idea behind “Sense-Abilities,” Lee explained, is that when people use their senses - smell, touch, taste, vision, and hearing - they can tap into their emotions to create more holistic, meaningful interactions. Because physical appearance and colour are top considerations when someone buys a product, a multi-sensory experience also helps capture consumer attention.

This multi-sensory approach translates into 2027 colour trends, which include the calming hues of nature, nostalgia

for the past, and joyful or dramatic colours drawn from popular culture.

Cloud Dancer, Pantone’s 2026 Colour of the Year, was also selected to reflect a growing desire for quiet. The versatile white, which balances warm and cool tones, o ers “a hushed whisper in a noisy world and a desire for peace and clarity,” she said.

Lee believes this colour is a necessary hue that provides comfort and never goes out of style. She said white has become a seasonless colour, as seen in quilted applications for home and personal accessories that span the seasons.

“When used in the home, white is considered a staple - a dependable choice - and when used in clothing, it’s an inevitable classic,” Lee explained. “A conscious statement of simplification, Cloud Dancer enhances our focus, providing release from the distraction of external influences.”

Hosted by the International Housewares Association (IHA), the Inspired Home Show was held from March 10 to March 12 at Chicago’s McCormick Place. Buyers from 115 countries joined more than 1,000 home and housewares companies for product discovery, trendspotting, and networking.

Palettes for 2027

Lee closed her session by revealing the seven colour palettes in the Pantone View Home + Interiors 2027 forecast. The palettes are:

Delight - Represents summer at its softest - celebrating life’s simple pleasures and sensory joys with the muted tones of a summer meadow.

Allure - Inspired by glamorous Hollywood films, Allure features dramatic and elegant hues.

Lucid - Blues and greens dominate this palette, which is intended to represent the “quiet magic of cool imagination and daydreams with clarity and transparency”.

Hush - This palette is felt before it’s noticed, said Lee. It features quiet light and muted midtones that represent health, wellness and calm.

Honest - Honest features warm and comforting hues - browns, reds and oranges - reminiscent of comfort foods and homemade baked goods. “This palette goes well with mauve,” said Lee.

Grounded - Drawing inspiration from nature, this palette has organic shadings and varietal earth tones. It mixes well with many household items people already own, Lee said.

Elation - Elation features eclectic and contrasting hues, making for a vibrant and playful palette.

Inside Exclusively Show

A focused sourcing experience o ering inspiration, insight, and real value for retail planning awaits at Exclusively Show in the heart of London on June 9 and June 10

For many buyers and retailers across the gift and home industry, the challenge is not a lack of choice, but knowing where to focus time, attention, and budget. That is exactly where Exclusively Show positions itself as an essential trade destination.

Taking place on June 9 and June 10 at the Business Design Centre in London, the event is designed for buyers who want to make confident, commercially informed decisions for the seasons ahead.

At its core, Exclusively Show brings together a carefully curated selection of suppliers across gifts, home, and housewares under one roof. For buyers, this means the ability to compare ranges, spot emerging trends, and build supplier relationships e ciently, without the time and cost of visiting multiple locations. It is a focused environment designed for commercial decision-making rather than passive browsing.

One of the key strengths of the show is the breadth of gifting inspiration available across the floor. Visitors will find a strong mix of established and innovative brands o ering products suited to every gifting occasion, from impulse purchases to premium lifestyle ranges.

Exhibitors include well-known names such as Talking Tables, The Gluggle Jug Factory Portmeirion, and Ritzenho , alongside many more suppliers covering a wide spectrum of price points and styles.

Beyond product sourcing, one of the most valuable reasons to attend is the opportunity to gain forward-looking insight into consumer behaviour and retail trends. A major feature of the event is the Trend Showcase: a dedicated area combining curated product displays with expert-led seminars by trend forecasting agency Scarlet Opus. This space is designed to help buyers understand what trend will shape demand in 2027 and beyond.

The Trend Showcase o ers a practical lens on future buying decisions, highlighting design directions, product categories, and social moods that will influence consumer spending.

For busy buyers, this is particularly valuable as it turns abstract trend forecasting into something tangible and commercially actionable. Rather than guessing what might work next season, visitors can see how trends are already translating into real products across gifting.

Ultimately, the value of Exclusively Show lies in e ciency and clarity. It is a chance to step away from the noise of day-to-day trading and focus on strategic buying decisions in a single, highly targeted environment. Whether you’re an independent retailer or part of a larger buying team, the show o ers a rare opportunity to compare, evaluate, and plan with confidence.

For those still deciding whether to attend, the question is less about whether you can a ord the time, and more about whether you can a ord to miss the insights, connections, and commercial opportunities that shape the year ahead.

Home comforts

Museums & Galleries is set to expand its homeware portfolio this summer with a range of new launches, debuting at Exclusively

Show

Museums & Galleries will unveil new additions to its homeware collections this summer at Exclusively Show.

Leading the collection are two new designs from celebrated British designer William Morris, released under the V&A (Victoria & Albert) licence. Willow Bough is one of Morris’ most-loved creations, and Museums & Galleries has teamed it with a lesser-known gem, Trent - an exotic Victorian floral fantasy in rich blues, golds, creams, and reds.

Both patterns will feature across a co-ordinated collection of fine bone china mugs, coaster sets, oven gloves, tea towel sets, and aprons.

Following strong demand for its existing tabletop o er, Museums & Galleries is also introducing new coasters and placemats spanning licences from the Natural History Museum and Vincent van Gogh, alongside further designs from Angela Harding and Brambly Hedge.

The summer launch also marks the debut of a new licence, London Landmarks, by Josie Shenoy - the celebrated award-winning illustrator whose work transforms painstakingly detailed and technically accurate architectural drawings into vibrant, decorative artworks. Her stated ambition is to allow her British-Indian heritage to shine through in her use of intricate pattern and detail.

The art team at Museums & Galleries has translated Josie’s decorative London map, showcasing classic London landmarks, onto a suite of gift products. Following the successful launch earlier this year of greeting cards and gift wrap, the range now includes a luxury A5 notebook, a magnetic notepad, playing cards, a gift-boxed fine bone china mug, an insulated drinks bottle, a PVA travel mug, a cork-backed coaster set, and a tea towel set. Finally, further extending its textile o er, Museums & Galleries is introducing two standalone Christmas tea towels. One features Brambly Hedge’s much-loved Winter Ball artwork, while the other, Winter Walkies, has been created by popular illustrator Louise Cunningham.

“Quite simply unmissable”

Retail100 Consulting director and co-founder Elaine Hooper shares

how trade fairs look very di erent depending on where you stand - and why your presence genuinely matters

Poacher turned gamekeeper… or perhaps the other way around. Either way, after 32 years as a buyer, four years as a retail consultant, and the past 12 months as a retail director on the supplier side, I’ve gained a completely new perspective on what it truly means to stand in someone else’s shoes.

As buyers, particularly those fortunate enough to have been trained within organisations that invest deeply in development (thank you, John Lewis), we’re taught to think collaboratively and consider the supplier’s viewpoint. But the reality is, it goes far beyond empathy. Until you’ve lived it, you don’t fully appreciate the complexity, pressure, and sheer e ort behind the scenes.

There’s no better lens through which to explore this than trade fairs and, with The Exclusively Show just around the corner, it feels especially relevant. It remains a cornerstone event in the industry calendar - and one I never failed to attend as a buyer, from my tabletop through to cookshop days.

From a buyer’s perspective, Exclusively is quite simply unmissable. The opportunity to engage with more than 140 companies and over 250 brands across two days is invaluable.

The Trend Showcase o ers essential perspectives, particularly for those newer to the category, while the London Store Tour provides added context for both international and domestic visitors.

And, of course, the networking opportunities within such a dynamic and passionate industry are second to none. Some of the most exciting

products and partnerships I discovered came from walking those aisles. It’s simple: if you’re not there, you’re missing out.

However, stepping into a supplier’s shoes has been a revelation. The housewares sector is, without question, one of the most supportive and collaborative industries I’ve experienced. There is a real sense of camaraderie, with suppliers generously sharing time, advice, and expertise. Trade bodies like BHETA, which organises Exclusively, play a vital role in fostering this, providing not just connections to retailers, but also market insight, guidance, and advocacy that help businesses grow and succeed.

Trade fairs, however, are not without their challenges, particularly for suppliers. What once

felt like a long day on your feet as a buyer pales in comparison to the reality of building and running a stand. From the physical demands of set-up, moving stock, dressing displays, and managing logistics, to the finer details of power, layout, and presentation, it’s an operation that requires meticulous planning and significant e ort. And that’s before the doors even open.

Then there’s the investment. Trade fairs represent a substantial financial commitment, particularly for smalland medium-sized businesses. Stand space, logistics, accommodation, and travel all contribute to a considerable outlay, which is why every conversation, every connection, and every opportunity to engage with buyers matters so much.

So here is my message, wholeheartedly: buyers, please

Elaine Hooper is a director and co-founder of Retail100 Consulting, which is a consultancy firm with 100 years of combined retail experience, dedicated to helping retailers and brands grow.

With a strong retail background, Elaine spent 32 years at John Lewis, where she held a variety of roles across multiple categories. Her experience includes senior buying positions in home, toys, and beauty, as well as space planning and project leadership. She also brings valuable supplier-side insight from her time as retail director at sustainable lifestyle products supplier frank green, giving her a well-rounded understanding of both retail and brand perspectives.

attend. Your time at a trade fair is incredibly well spent - nowhere else o ers the ability to see so much, in such a focused way, in just a day or two. And beyond the commercial value, your presence genuinely matters. For suppliers, it can make the di erence between a good show and a great one.

Finally, this year’s Exclusively carries additional significance. It marks the last show for Seema Grantham in her role as sector manager for housewares & small electricals at BHETA and director of sales for Exclusively. She has been an integral part of this industry, supporting countless individuals and businesses along the way. It feels only right to recognise Seema’s contribution and extend a sincere thank you as she steps away from the role.

Elaine’s expertise spans buying, account management, and facilitating retailer introductions, alongside end-to-end strategy, licensing, private label product development, sourcing, and maximising brand potential. She has extensive experience leading teams, as well as coaching and mentoring individuals to drive success.

It’s a hat–

After 107 years of trading, triple Gift of the Year award winner Gibsons Games reflects on the journey so far...

Three trophies, one unforgettable evening, and a story worth celebrating. Founded in 1919 by Harry Percy Gibson, family business Gibsons Games recently scored a gift industry hat-trick.

With a history spanning four generations of the Gibson family, the company has been through many changes. But its purpose - to create joy through first class jigsaw puzzles and games - has remained a constant.

Gibsons’ story began with indoor games such as L’Attaque and Dover Patrol; a manufacturing company pre-war that quickly adapted to wholesaling when its buildings were destroyed during the Blitz. Third generation Michael Gibson introduced jigsaw puzzles in the late 1980s - a wise move for the company, with tens of millions sold to date.

Following growth in 2025, Gibsons has seen a strong start to 2026. Partnerships with other established British brands such as the National Trust and RSPB have led the way, but Gibsons’ core puzzle range and enduring family games have also had a good start to the year.

Fourth generation managing director Kate Gibson is passionate about taking the company to the next level while celebrating its enduring heritage and embracing the values that make Gibsons Games what it is today.

As a B Corp certified business and a King’s Award for Enterprise winner, Gibsons has been at the forefront of driving positive change in our industry. These milestones, including being invited to Windsor Castle to meet the King in celebration of its King’s Award, are significant for a company that has spent the last decade prioritising people and planet alongside the commercial success of the business.

Those that know and love the brand appreciate that a Gibsons Games product is made to last. With durable and sustainable materials, the Gibsons team is passionate about ensuring every product is the best it can be: wholesome, beautiful, and a joy to put together or to play with. The company partners with like-minded businesses and other British brands and institutions that share the same values.

The company has recently doubled down on the Gibsons brand, ensuring greater clarity and responding to what its customers want from the British brand they have come to love.

A perfect example of this is its partnership with family business The Art File, creating a range that has gone from strength to strength. Having recently certified as a B Corporation itself, the two companies are perfectly aligned: the beautiful artwork of The Art File marries perfectly with the games and puzzles expertise of Gibsons. This successful partnership was responsible for two of the three Gift of the Year Awards that Gibsons recently received.

Constant innovation is at the heart of a small business. Gibsons’ brand team is headed up by Emily Charles, with a team of in-house designers ensuring every product tells the story it was made to tell.

The company is working with some exciting new licences in the coming months and will be launching a range of English Heritage jigsaw puzzles in July. Joining these are two games that the team is bursting to share with the world. Categories and Take Cat (a purrfect combination) are sure to be family favourites. Commercial director Amanda Chaplin considers Categories to be “quite possibly the best Gibsons game yet!”

The team was bowled over with the hat-trick at the recent Gift of the Year awards. Kate commented: “It’s a huge honour for a family business. Our team has worked incredibly hard over the past two years on these products, and to see them shine is absolutely the icing on the cake.

“As we all know in our industry, no year is the same and no situation is

permanent - we must all keep doing what we do in the best way we know. We’ve learned never to take for granted the wins along the way, and we will be continuing to celebrate this one for some time to come.”

Gibsons Games is an enduring brand. Even Queen Elizabeth II was spotted taking Gibsons puzzles on her holidays! Customers know that working with the family-run company means great service and a reliable experience, built over decades. It’s a company that knows who it is and what it stands for, and consistently delivers. Gibsons’ award-winning products are created with care and attention on behalf of the customer and the planet we all inhabit.

The future is bright for Gibsons Games. The company will be growing its product o ering, continuing its expansion in the US, and hopes to recertify as a B Corporation later this year. It will also be back at the British Jigsaw Championships in June to enjoy some speed puzzling.

Kate concluded: “The saying ‘it takes a village’ feels mightily apt. We are grateful to all the artists, inventors, licensors, suppliers and, of course, the Gibsons team, who have enriched our journey so far. We are excited to discover the opportunities that await.”

Gibsons is a regular exhibitor at Spring Fair as well as other gift and toy shows. It has a network of sales agents and an in-house team. All enquiries should be directed to sales@gibsonsgames.co.uk.

A design-led trio

Meg Hawkins

Meg Hawkins says: “We’ve got three launches coming up. First is our long-awaited ‘The Pooches’ range, which we’re really excited about. It’s full of all your favourite dogs, brought together across mugs, tea towels, and even home fragrance. Given the amazing response to our artwork, it felt like the perfect time to turn it into a full collection.

“We’re also launching ‘The Winter’, a calm and beautifully considered range of landscape designs, with a subtle touch of winter sparkle. It’s all about those peaceful, seasonal moments and bringing that feeling into the home.

“And then we have the ‘In the Air’ range: a fun, colourful collection featuring hot air balloons. It’s something fresher and lighter, perfect for summer, and adds a playful lift to the overall o ering.

“The trio is a real mix of styles, but all very true to us: design-led, story-driven, and made to sit beautifully in everyday spaces.”

The collection includes gift-boxed scented candles and reed di users in colour-matched festive packaging, alongside an expanded range of gifting formats following the brand’s sell-out Christmas 2025 performance.

Designed to inspire gifting while supporting premium retail opportunities, the range reflects growing interest in home fragrance as part of the festive experience, as consumers increasingly use scent to create atmosphere, comfort, and emotional connection during the holiday season.

Inside John Lewis’ Gifting

Jason Wilary-Attew, Partner and Director of Home at the John Lewis Partnership, reveals the strategy, inspiration, and customer-centric thinking behind the retailer’s Gifting Emporium

What’s your professional background?

My professional journey is rooted in formal training in product design, a discipline I pursued many years ago. This foundation gave me a deep appreciation for the lifecycle of a product, from initial concept to the hands of the consumer. I quickly realised I wanted to combine my passion for product development and aesthetics with the dynamic, fast-paced environment of retail.

My first hands-on experience in a retail setting was on the shopfloor at Harrods, a brief but invaluable immersion that provided a front-line perspective on customer engagement and merchandising. This practical insight cemented my career direction, leading me to secure a position on a buying trainee scheme.

This formal scheme was crucial in developing my understanding of the commercial side of retail, encompassing everything from supplier negotiation and trend forecasting to inventory management and margin analysis.

Since then, I’ve built a diverse career working across several multiple retailers, gaining experience in various sectors and market positions. Notably, my career has brought me back to John Lewis on two separate occasions - a testament to the brand’s unique culture and commitment to quality. These roles have been particularly fulfilling, allowing me to apply my broad retail knowledge in a deeply respected partnership environment.

What inspired your move into retail?

My professional journey and philosophy have been profoundly shaped by the legacy of Sir Terence Conran. His influence stemmed from an unwavering focus on democratising beautiful and thoughtfully designed products for British customers - an ambition he masterfully executed through both the pioneering Habitat and the more premium, curated o ering of The Conran Shop.

I was immensely privileged to have worked within his sphere, as the buying and merchandising director at The Conran Shop. During that time, I briefly worked directly with him - a career highlight and a moment of personal pride that I know would have made my mother incredibly happy!

His vision - that good design should be accessible and integral to everyday life - remains a core tenet of my own approach to retail and product curation. It taught me the importance of not just selling products, but curating a lifestyle and narrative built on quality, utility, and aesthetic excellence.

Tell us about the Gifting Emporium. Our strategic vision for the gifting category within John Lewis at the start of 2025 was one of ambitious transformation. Recognising the category’s significant potential, we set out a clear objective to fundamentally rethink the customer experience, product assortment, and overall positioning of gifting. This product-led transformation was strategically timed to coincide with a major, multi-million-pound investment in the reimagining of our Bluewater store.

This convergence of a product category overhaul with a complete store transformation presented a unique and compelling opportunity. By integrating the two initiatives, we were able to combine the refined product strategy with the creation of a brand-new, innovative physical retail concept for gifting.

This allowed us to design a dedicated space that was not only aesthetically engaging but also functionally aligned with the new category vision, enhancing customer navigation and discoverability.

The culmination of this extensive planning, development, and execution process was the successful launch of the newly transformed

Emporium…

gifting category and its bespoke retail concept in October 2025.

This launch marked a pivotal moment in our retail strategy, delivering on our initial ambition to elevate the gifting experience for our customers. The concept at Bluewater now serves as a key flagship representation of our forward-looking approach to retail and category management.

What sets the Gifting Emporium apart?

Our range of brands and products is fabulously eclectic, yet well-planned. It’s an emporium of inspiring, interesting and exciting products - o ering breadth of choice to many di erent customers.

We began by identifying our customers’ passions and then curated a list of products and brands we were confident they would love. Our ambition is to broaden our appeal to a wider customer base.

The key driver for grouping items by “passion points” was adopting a customer-centric perspective, fundamentally shifting our internal mindset to think and shop exactly like our customers. This involved deep consideration of the recipient’s interests and passions, and understanding what the gift-giver or the person receiving the gift is truly enthusiastic about.

How many brands do you carry?

We’re proud to offer an extensive and carefully curated selection of brands across our various departments, with over 900 in Home alone. This comprehensive assortment ensures we can meet a diverse range of customer tastes, needs, and price points.

Our home fragrance collection, for instance, features premium names such as Neom , celebrated for its 100% natural fragrances and therapeutic benefits, and Skandinavisk , known for its evocative scents inspired by Nordic landscapes. These brands form the cornerstone of our candle and diffuser offering.

Beyond home fragrance, our selection extends into key lifestyle and homeware categories. We feature a range of luxury goods and everyday

essentials, from Ruinart to Rythmik Cocktails and Chococo , as well as sophisticated furniture and home accessories from names like Neptune , Pols Potten , and The Conran Shop

The inclusion of The Conran Shop speaks to our commitment to contemporary design and timeless quality. We also stock exclusive decorative pieces and table art from L’Objet , adding a touch of international luxury and craftsmanship to our offering.

This commitment to brand diversity and quality is central to our retail strategy, ensuring that our customers have access to established favourites and exciting new discoveries alike.

Any unexpected success stories?

Sales of butter dishes - the quirky and the traditional - are up 62% year-on-year. Brands like &k Amsterdam and our collaboration with Anine Cecile Iverson o er a brilliant range.

How does your team source new products?

The team is really invested in gifting on a professional and personal level. They attend trade shows, work with brand reps, and scour the news, but they also find social media to be a fantastic source of inspiration. It takes an eye and understanding to navigate this space, as there are so many accounts online, but combined with the team’s travel, it allows them to find inspiration all over the globe.

Any favourite shows?

While Maison&Objet in Paris remains a significant destination, the team finds it equally valuable to make direct contact with brands they discover. This approach is an e ective way to source interesting and lesser-known products.

What’s next for your gifts?

We’re always looking for new products, brands, and categories. The fact that we have an electric motorbike centre-stage in Bluewater is testament to that.

What’s next for the Gifting Emporium retail concept?

The plan is to expand this concept to additional stores, with a minimum of three new locations scheduled for 2026. Furthermore, we’re accelerating the rollout of the new product o er to ensure all our stores receive the majority of the new Gifting Emporium range.

Finally, what’s a typical day like for you?  There isn’t a typical day. Mondays are the most standard, focused on reviewing sales from the previous week and ensuring upcoming plans are on track. Beyond that, each day, week, and month varies - but the ultimate aim is to work with the teams across design, buying, merchandising, sourcing, quality and more, to create the best product offering across home and gifting for our customers.

Tiny & trending

The arrival of a newborn remains a joyful occasion, but the baby and christening gifts sector is shifting beyond tradition into lifestyle-led, social media-shaped celebrations. We spoke to Gary Hughes, Head of UK Sales at Rainbow Designs, to find out more

How has this sector changed in recent years?

The baby and christening gifts sector has evolved to become more lifestyle-led, with a growing emphasis on meaningful, beautifully presented gifting. While traditional occasions such as christenings remain important, there has been a noticeable shift towards a wider range of celebrations, including baby showers, gender reveals, and Naming Days, all of which are often amplified through social media. This has increased demand for gifts that are both visually appealing and emotionally resonant. At the same time, nostalgia is playing a key role, with gift buyers enjoying sharing beloved characters from their own childhood, such as Peter Rabbit, Winnie the Pooh, and Paddington, with the next generation.

As a result, there is strong demand for our trusted heritage brands combined with modern, baby-safe plush formats such as comforters, ring rattles, developmental toys and our My First collection of toys.

If a retailer could stock just one range, what would you recommend? With such a breadth of infant collections available in our catalogue, including timeless favourites such as Peter Rabbit and Disney’s Winnie the Pooh, choosing just one is no easy task.

However, our Peter Rabbit Once Upon a Time and Signature collections, featuring both Peter Rabbit and Flopsy Bunny, would be my recommendation. These muchloved characters have multi-generational appeal and instant recognition, making them a popular option for gifting.

Their heritage appeal, combined with soft, baby-safe designs and gift-ready formats, ensures they resonate across a wide range of occasions, from newborn arrivals to christenings and first birthdays.

What newness or innovations do you have in the pipeline?

This year we’ve already introduced several exciting new collections, including the super cute Care Bears Baby range, the adorable Disney Dumbo infant collection, and the Winnie the Pooh 100 range, celebrating a century of the beloved character. Alongside these launches, we also have numerous new line additions across our bestselling ranges, such as the new Lying Down Musical Peter Rabbit and Peter Rabbit Fold Out Activity Book.

Looking ahead, development is already underway on new concepts and collections for 2027, continuing to build on the blend of heritage, innovation and thoughtful gifting that defines the Rainbow range.

Buyer’s Eye

Independent gift buyers reveal the baby gift brands and products that are flying o their shelves

Lindsey Scott-Walker, owner of Feather Robins in Northampton and Daventry:

Our baby gifting window has been a success so far, and it’s a great way of letting new customers know what we stock.

We’ve recently introduced Jomanda, which has been an instant hit - especially the Highland cow range, which customers absolutely love. Alongside this, the “Born in…” books from From You to Me are also performing really well, o ering a really meaningful, keepsake-style gift.

Due to space constraints, we’ve moved away from baby clothing and instead focused on curated gifting: soft toys and keepsakes that feel more thoughtful and deliver stronger sell-through.

Interestingly, we’re also seeing more older customers buying baby shower cards, which is a growing trend. Demand is definitely there, but finding a strong, design-led range at the right price point remains a challenge.

Pollyanna Williams, owner of Snoop in Shrewsbury:

Last Christmas, we decided to add some baby gifts to our range - a first for us! They’ve been well received, especially our Sophie Home cotton toys and rattles. We also have a range of board books, which kids love to explore while in the shop.

Linda McBride, owner of Gibbles Gifts, Cards and Home  in Anstruther:

We have a small baby gift section which includes funky, colourful clothing from Blade & Rose which sells particularly well for us.

Bill Nettelfield, owner of Bill & Bert’s in Colchester:

We sell lots of frames, soft toys, and sentimental items. Grandparents always seem to be able to find something for newborn grandchildren here!

Samantha Gibbs, director of Nest in Stoneygate and Thurlaston:

Blade & Rose’s Gru alo range is fantastic: they are really on-brand products that customers are loving.

Paddy Morton, manager of Strickland and Holt in Yarm: We’ve recently added Stei as a new brand for us, and initial sales have been positive.

Diary of a gift shop

As spring boosts sales at Hand Picked by Henrietta in the Cheshire town of Poynton, owner Sarah Halsall is also taking on a charity walking challenge close to home

Spring is blooming - and so are sales! It’s been a brilliant start to the season at Hand Picked by Henrietta. Easter gave us a real boost, and customers have been coming through the door in great spirits. There’s a definite energy to spring that gets people buying, and we’ve been well-stocked to make the most of it.

If there’s one category dominating both conversations and shelf space, it’s the fidget and squishy toy frenzy. Without question, they are the most in-demand gifts right now, and there’s no sign of that slowing down.

Our NeeDohs from Bigjigs Toys sold out within a week of arriving - and we haven’t been able to restock since. Thankfully, I had the foresight to pre-order Christmas stock, so we’re covered later in the year. Phew.

American Speks from Baby Republic are eagerly anticipated, but aren’t due until July, so fingers crossed for a smooth delivery. Crazy Aaron’s Thinking Putty, distributed by DKB Toys, continues to sell through really well. A fresh delivery arrived this week, which is always a welcome sight.

But the range I’m most excited about is the viral Scrunchems Sugar Mini Dumplings from One For Fun. Demand has been so high that they’ve been airfreighted in, and they’re due any day. If you haven’t seen these yet, look them up - your customers are going to love them.

On a slightly different note, we’ve just taken delivery of All Creatures cuddly toy keyrings from Carte Blanche Greetings, and I can’t wait to see customers’ reactions. We stock six designs: April the Hedgehog, Rosie the

Rabbit, Maximus the Orangutan, Jasper the Fox, Hazel the Elephant, and Cleo the Donkey. They’re absolutely adorable and, at under £10, offer brilliant value - exactly the kind of impulse purchase that makes people genuinely happy. I expect them to fly.

Away from the shop floor, planning is well underway for this year’s Cardgains Charity Challenge 20-mile walk, and I’m thrilled to say it’s coming home to Cheshire! I’ve been involved in helping plan the route, which feels especially fitting given we’re surrounded by such beautiful walking countryside.

This year’s chosen charity is the Meningitis Research Foundation - a cause that resonates with so many families. We’re determined to make it a walk to remember, particularly as Cardgains managing director Penny Shaw retires the day after the event.

If you’re a fellow Cardgains member or supplier and haven’t signed up yet, come and join the fun on Thursday June 25 - sturdy boots are definitely recommended!

Pet appeal

From mugs and homeware to novelty presents, animal-inspired designs are proving popular as UK shoppers embrace petthemed gifts for every occasion

he UK is clearly a nation of pet lovers. According to the latest Pet Population Survey by trade association UK Pet Food, around 36.5 million pets live in UK homes, with 62% of households owning at least one animal.

Dogs remain the most popular pet, with numbers rising from 12.5 million in 2021 to 15.5 million today. Cats follow closely behind, with an estimated 13.1 million living in homes across the UK. Nicole Paley, deputy CEO of UK Pet Food, says: “For many, pets are part of everyday life, shaping routines, supporting wellbeing and o ering companionship in a busy world.”

We asked gift suppliers for their thoughts on this booming sector… Meg Hawkins, CEO and designer of Meg Hawkins, says: “We all love our furry friends, and we’ve definitely seen a growing demand for pet-themed gifts over the last few years. People want products that celebrate the little personalities that become such a huge part of everyday life and family homes.

“That’s exactly why we’re so excited about our new Pooches range. It’s something we’ve been asked for time and time again. The only challenge is that we can’t include every single breed - as much as we’d love to - so we’ve started with some of the nation’s best-loved dogs and brought them together in a collection full of character, charm and a whole heap of loveliness. There’s so much scope for the range too, from mugs and tea towels to home fragrance and beyond. It’s personal, thoughtful, and makes a lovely gift.”

Natalie Taylor, marketing manager at Wild Things, agrees. “With more than 60% of UK households owning an animal, demand for pet-themed gifting won’t be slowing down anytime soon,” she says.

“Our pet category embodies both novelty and sales reliability - a year-round performer as customers continue to look for meaningful items that celebrate their connection with animal companions. While dogs and cats continue to dominate, the past two years have highlighted further opportunities to broaden our already strong pet, bird, animal, and nature ranges.

“National Pet Month may have been in April, but for retailers, pet-inspired designs remain a natural fit across all seasons. These pieces not only create eye-catching displays but invite deeper connection, encouraging customers to choose gifts that reflect personal interests, care and individuality.”

Buyer’s Eye

Independent gift retailers share the pet-themed gifts selling fastest in their stores

Pollyanna Williams, owner of Snoop in Shrewsbury, says:

We love dogs - they’re our favourite customers (after their parents of course!). We have a Labrador named Janet who stubbornly stops and plants her feet firmly outside the shop during walks, refusing to move until her owner comes in and buys her a packet of treats.

We sell plant-based, healthy dog treats from W’ZIS - the pooches keep coming back for more! They’re vegan and only one calorie each, so owners can feel good knowing their dogs aren’t being overfed.

Alongside our range of products for pets, their owners can get involved too with our embroidered, slogan-themed caps from Pablo & Co. Boutique - with a a favourite being “Golden Retriever Energy”.

Samantha Gibbs, director of Nest in Stoneygate and Thurlaston, says:

We love Green & Wilds’ eco-friendly dog toys, and their treats make a great pick-up product. For pet owners, we’ve just introduced McLaggan + Co’s “Dog Dad Mug” and “Dog Mum Mug”, and many customers are now requesting cat versions!

Our Repeat Repeat range also includes dog and cat mugs. Plus, we’ve taken on Pikkii’s Paper Pups and Paper Cats origami kits, and are expecting their “Become an Expert in Dogs” card set, which is part of a series of design-led, knowledge-packed gift boxes that teach users about dog behaviour, breeds, and care.

Bill Nettelfield, owner of Bill & Bert’s in Colchester, says:

We do best for pets with anything from Green and Wilds, which specialises in treats, chews, and eco-friendly toys for dogs and cats. It provides a great display stand, and all the food and toys have been excellent sellers for the past four years.

“A store of buried

At Squirrel in the Cumbrian market town of Ulverston, owner Katie Jones curates an eclectic selection of gifts - with every item chosen to delight, excite, and spark the joy of discovery

What’s your professional background?

I moved to the Lake District after receiving sponsorship from the Barrow shipyard to study naval architecture. After a year working in the yard, I went to Newcastle University, where I completed a BSc and then an MPhil researching free-fall lifeboats.

Working in the shipyard was great but I was always torn between engineering and my more creative side. So I left after five years to start a wholesale business, Sting in the Tail, initially producing beeswax candles and screen-printed gifts.

Tell us about Squirrel.

I first exhibited at Top Drawer S/S in 1993. The business began in Ulverston with a small shop and workshop but as it grew, we moved premises and, in 1997, expanded the wholesale side into a 2,000sq ft industrial unit while keeping the shop, which also operated as a café.

In 2015, when faced with the choice of moving or closing the retail side, I bought a boarded-up pub on Market Street in Ulverston and relocated there. At that point the shop was renamed Squirrel, inspired by the local red squirrel colonies and our eclectic range of products, reflected in our tagline, “A Store of Buried Treasure”.

I sold the wholesale business in January this year, and since then have been working with the shop team to refine and expand our online shop and refocus our customer loyalty scheme.

What sets your shop apart from other gift retailers?

Imaginative merchandising and a knowledgeable shop team are our core strengths. We have huge amounts of “buried treasure”, and my years of exhibiting and buying help me - along with Miriam, who jointly does the buying - to spot trends and exciting products.

My childhood memories of visiting favourite shops with my pocket money - and the anticipation and excitement of exploring shelves and displays - are something we aim to recreate at Squirrel. We use every opportunity to display product imaginatively. Our aim is to create a shop where both locals and visitors can discover treasure and feel excited when they walk through the door.

How would you describe your range? It’s eclectic. We aim to have a gift or inspired purchase for everyone. We buy throughout the year and introduce new products whenever we spot them.

How many brands do you carry?

So many I couldn’t name them all. A few include Casa Verde, Repeat Repeat, The Crafty Kit Company, Emma Ball, Moulin Roty, Maileg, Jellycat, Art Angels, Roger la Borde, Lamy, Kaweco, Lightstyle London, Opinel, Niwaki, Sting in the Tail, Gemjar, and Roka London - and the list goes on.

Key names? We particularly love working with Whitby & Co., based in Kendal, as well as Djeco and DM Brands

How do you source products?

We visit about three trade shows a year. We like to see product before purchasing, and you can’t beat trade shows for a concentrated bout of sourcing.

That said, I’m constantly disappointed by the lack of new exhibitors - they are the lifeblood of exhibitions for buyers. Somehow we need to encourage new exhibitors and remind buyers of the benefits of seeing product in person and developing face-toface relationships with suppliers.

We used to buy much more from Europe, but Brexit has closed the door for many smaller companies wanting to ship to the UK.

treasure”

What’s your selection criteria?

New products need to have shelf appeal. The price has to work and deliver enough margin. If you lose sight of margin, everything starts falling apart. We love product made in the UK and enjoy finding new suppliers who are passionate about what they create. Ideally, everything would be plastic-free, made in the UK, and beautifully, functionally designed - but Ulverston is a small place, and it’s a gradual journey to where we want to be!

How has business been so far this year? We’re up on 2024/5, but I don’t think you should ever relax. Online sales are slowly growing. We don’t want them to dominate the business, but rather to build to the equivalent of a “seventh day of trading”.

Which categories are currently performing well?

Greetings cards (after our spring restock), notebooks and journalling products, soft toys, bags, socks, and scarves.

Any unexpected success stories?

Roka London socks have been amazing. Often, when such a successful brand moves into a di erent category, it can start slowly - but these socks have flown out since the first order.

How do you get the word out?

We use Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, alongside a fortnightly newsletter to our fast-growing email list. We run a “Scurry Club” loyalty scheme where customers earn credits on purchases in-store and online, which they can redeem against future purchases. We took on an apprentice last year who is studying multimedia marketing, and we are definitely seeing the results.

Do you offer any services?

We almost always wrap purchases in tissue with our custom labels and distinctive bags. We gift-wrap on request, but often customers use our bespoke printed carriers as gift bags. We also sell gift vouchers, which are very popular.

What are your new arrivals?

We’re choc-a-block with stock but can always fit in exciting new products. We’ve just taken on UpCircle Beauty - great products, made in the UK, and just right for our customers. We’re building our range of local suppliers, and are delighted that new additions from Northern Woven, Shoeless Joe, Lightstyle London, Roger la Borde, Roka London, and Moulin Roty will be making their way to Squirrel over the coming months.

What do you expect to be the most popular gifts?

Jewellery, craft kits, gardening products, and soft toys are always good sellers.

What’s next for your business?

We’ve just launched a new website and we’re using a local SEO expert to work on the areas beyond our expertise! We’re also hoping to incorporate an element of the gift-finding help we o er in-store into the website experience. Our apprentice is looking at new marketing projects, and we’re excited to develop our online presence and social media activity.

What’s the most rewarding and challenging part of your job?

I love seeing people’s reactions to the shopand then watching them return with friends to introduce them to Squirrel. We invest so much in sourcing and merchandising; it’s lovely to see that appreciated.

Recently, we’ve received some wonderful online reviews, been presented with a poem about the shop, and even received a letter from an appreciative online customer - little things that just make your day.

What do you enjoy most - and least? Trade shows are exciting: catching up with suppliers and exhibitors and digging for new products. I don’t enjoy dealing with CCTV and security issues, fake notes, or customers trying to extract discounts.

What are your current favourite gifts on your shelves?

Anything practical, well-designed and well-made. Black+Blum, Kaweco pens and Niwaki would be my top choices.

When do you and your team have the most fun during the week?

When lovely Maureen, our local poet, comes in!

Who’s been your most frustrating customer - and why?

The lady and her daughter who left critical, untrue reviews on Google many years ago that we couldn’t get removed - and which still annoy!

What’s the strangest or most surprising customer request you’ve had?

“Do you include the steam in these di users?”

Perfect pick-me-ups

Impulse buys continue to punch well above their weight in the gift industry, quietly reshaping basket spend. We speak to suppliers about the enduring appeal of small, a ordable add-ons and the opportunities they unlock for retailers

From till-point treats and novelty picks to sentiment-led keepsakes, impulse buys are proving increasingly valuable for retailers looking to drive margin, encourage repeat visits, and tap into shoppers’ desire for instant gratification without stretching budgets. We asked suppliers for their thoughts… How has this sector evolved?

Meg Hawkins, CEO & designer of Meg Hawkins: This sector has definitely shifted. Impulse buying used to be driven purely by price, but now it’s much more about perceived value. Customers still want a ordability, but they also expect strong design, quality, and a story behind what they’re buying.

There’s also been a big move towards gifting and self-gifting; people are picking up little luxuries more often. Products need to feel considered, not throwaway. That’s where we sit really comfortably: design-led pieces that feel special, but are still accessible enough to pick up without hesitation.

Claire Bristow, director of NPD at Ashleigh & Burwood: Typically, impulse buys in home fragrance were limited to fragrance oils or wax melts, both of which still perform well, particularly in today’s economically challenging times. But consumers are beginning to seek more decorative, elevated solutions at purse-friendly prices: items that feel like a real self-treat or make a great gift without breaking the budget.

Julia Cash, creative director at Mad Beauty: Consumers are becoming far more intentional with their purchases. They’re seeking products that genuinely add value to their daily routines, prioritising high-quality formulas, trusted ingredients, and items they’ll return to time and time again. There’s a clear shift towards thoughtful consumption, where longevity and overall experience matter just as much as aesthetics.

If a retailer could stock just one product, what would you recommend?

Meg: That’s easy: our mugs. They have become a bit of a collectable now. They’ve got that hand-turned, tactile feel, and all the little details that go with them really make them stand out from everything else on the shelf. We frequently get messages from customers saying they now have four or five in their collection, which feels like a privilege given the nation’s love of tea! Claire: I really recommend our scented ceramics as they feel like a luxury treat yet o er such great value. They’re so versatile - I pop one in my suitcase when I travel to keep clothes fresh, but I also have one in my car, one in each closet, and another hanging on the inside of my front door so guests are greeted with a waft of scent.

Julia: With the continued success of the Toy Story franchise, our range o ers a strong commercial opportunity. With anticipation building around Toy Story 5, now is the perfect time for retailers to capitalise on its enduring popularity. The character-inspired designs, paired with innovative and giftable product formats, make the collection both eye-catching and highly marketable, appealing to a broad audience across age groups.

What key trends should retailers be aware of?

Meg: Storytelling and design are more important than ever. Customers want to connect with what they’re buying, whether that’s through artwork, packaging or the overall feel of a range. If it looks good on a shelf and tells a story, it’s far more likely to be picked up.

There’s also a strong move towards products that fit into the home. They need to sit nicely in a space - whether placed on a kitchen shelf, bedside table or bathroom counter. Aesthetics matter just as much as function.

Claire: Consumers are looking for home fragrance items that not only smell gorgeous but also look great and elevate the space; design and material quality are becoming increasingly important. They’re also seeking products that can be refilled or refreshed as they become mindful of avoiding ‘throwaway’ solutions.

Julia: Lip care is experiencing a major resurgence, driven by the growing demand for hybrid beauty products that combine soothing benefits with a touch of glamour. Lip products are also increasingly positioned as accessible, feel-good purchases, making them ideal for gifting or everyday self-care. Products such as our Toy Story Lip Oil Collection tap directly into this trend.

Retailer opinion

What are the most popular impulse buys currently in your store?

Bill Nettelfield, owner of Bill and Bert’s in Colchester, says: NeeDoh products and Speks from Baby Republic have been the two main pick-up lines recently.

Pollyanna Williams, owner of Snoop in Shrewsbury, says:

Our Harriet Says Hi ‘foodie’ bath mats have been our biggest impulse buy of the past year. They’re something you don’t see every day, so they’re good to grab while they’re in stock - whether it’s a tin of sardines, martini olives, or a packet of butter under your feet, there’s nothing else quite like them!

Samantha Gibbs, director of Nest in Stoneygate and Thurlaston, says:

Rosie Made A Thing mugs are just too good for customers to resist right now!

Paddy Morton, manager of Strickland and Holt in Yarm, says: In a word: squishies!

Enchanted World forms part of the company’s Keeleco range, with every item made from 100% recycled polyester, combining sustainability with a touch of magic.

Meg Hawkins

Meg Hawkins, CEO and designer of Meg Hawkins, says: “We strive to deliver beautiful quality with a touch of luxury, all at a price point that makes our products perfect for impulse buying. Our pocket-sized hand creams, trinket dishes, keychains and coaster sets are all easy pick-ups - small, thoughtful pieces that customers don’t need to overthink.

“That said, it’s not just those products; the majority of our range falls into the ‘treat yourself’ or ‘quick considered gift’ category, which is exactly where we see strong, consistent sales. It’s the type of gift where you walk into a store, see it and think, ‘Oh, that would be perfect for…’ And at a reasonable price point? Sold!”

Gifts Today SHOP TALK

We asked 12 gift retailers across the UK to share how Easter trading fared, which products are performing strongly now, and how they’re preparing for Father’s Day

57 stores across the UK

How did trading over Easter go for you?

Easter trading was very strong compared with 2025 across all channels. While the dates don’t completely align, we’re anticipating significant double-digit growth compared with 2025 across the whole period, in stores and online.

What products or categories are selling particularly well right now?

We’re currently seeing strong sales driven by on-trend and viral ranges, in particular the NeeDoh craze, which has had a second lease of life this year and, with limited stock available in the market, has had a knock-on effect on strong sales of all things squishy.

Our pop culture collectibles ranges continue to perform very well, as do our seasonal ranges such as outdoor toys and remote control cars. Importantly, sales excluding trend lines are still in positive growth, which underlines the strength of our core proposition and bodes well for the summer months.

What are your plans for Father’s Day?

Father’s Day is a key event for us in the calendar. We fully launched online in May with the strapline “Gifts for Every Kind of Dad” as our main marketing message. This will be supported with a broad range of over 1,500 lines across all price points that will appeal to gift buyers for all types of dads, backed up by a strong marketing plan.

Stores will fully launch in June with the entire window themed for Father’s Day, and the best of our men’s gifting ranges curated for our customers at the front of our stores.

Ipswich Suffolk

How did trading over Easter go for you?

Trading over Easter was a bit slow; however, the week before was busier. More Easter cards were requested than usual, but sales of chocolate and sweets were disappointing for us.

What products or categories are selling particularly well right now?

Cards are selling well for us, alongside candles from St. Eval and Plum & Ashby, as well as Jellycat toys.

What are your plans for Father’s Day?

We’ve invested in a wider range of cards than usual and will also be offering a selection of interesting food items and chocolate. Our card suppliers include Ohh Deer, Mister Peebles, and Emily Nash, while our food and chocolate range features Crunch Platters, Pump Street Chocolate, Ocelot Chocolate, Otherly Oat Milk Chocolate, Goat Rodeo Pickles, and Mothernutter Peanut Butter

How did trading over Easter go for you?

Easter trade was slightly up on last year, so we were really pleased with how it went. Sales of all gardening accessories, especially stone decor ornaments, were really strong.

What products or categories are selling particularly well right now?

NeeDoh and Speks from Baby Republic were the standout winners over the Easter holidays; kids have been going nuts for these - thank you, TikTok! Sales of soft toys have been great as well. Jellycat, Charlie Bears, Wrendale Designs, and Steiff have performed very well.

What are your plans for Father’s Day?

Father’s Day is always a nice boost but never as strong as Mother’s Day. We stock a lot of men’s stuff, and will have a window dedicated to good old dad in the first week of June, ready for June 21. We will sell loads of construction kits from Coach House Partners, and you can never go wrong with Swole Panda socks and belts. Food from Spice Kitchen, Cartwright & Butler, and Cottage Delight will also be top sellers.

Paddy Morton Manager Strickland and Holt Yarm

North Yorkshire

How did trading over Easter go for you?

Easter was quite early this year so there was less sell-through time than usual. Overall, sales are likely to be a little below last year. However, we were quite pleased with the sell-through of the stock we had. Easter plushies, decorations, and spring flowers all performed really well.

What products or categories are selling particularly well right now?

In giftware, we’re doing well with ‘relaxing’-themed products such as sleep sprays like Repair and Care pillow spray from The Somerset Toiletry Company, essential oils, and lavender products from our local lavender farm, Northern Lavender

Customers have also been looking for a lot of colour, which is understandable after a very wet February! Toys are performing strongly, with Jellycat - as expected - but also a huge take off for squishies, such as the Scrunchems range by One for Fun. Supply is already struggling to keep up with demand.

What are your plans for Father’s Day?

We have a new chocolate range from The Chocolate Gift Company with great packaging which we will be pushing for Father’s Day: the Cool Vibes Toolbox which features miniature, solid chocolate tools. There are also new soap bars from The Somerset Toiletry Company, which have been a reliable seller for this season.

A new area for us is our ‘Vintage, Antique and Quirky department’ with hand-picked pre-loved items. This always gets men interested (and occupied), and we will be really using it for Father’s Day to find unusual and interesting pieces - old tools, pictures, records, sports, and industrial items. It’s great fun to source product for as well!

Shrewsbury, Shropshire

How did trading over Easter go for you?

We had a bustling Easter. Shrewsbury was very busy across Good Friday and Saturday. The weekend also marked our third birthday on Wyle Cop: a historic street with the longest uninterrupted row of indie businesses in the UK. Lots of people were visiting family, as well as tourists coming to explore for the weekend.

What products or categories are selling particularly well right now?

Our current top sellers are Yonder Cloud Bands (for keeping hair neat and tangle-free), BAGGU bath towels, Le Bon Shoppe polka dot sneaker socks, and FieldDay Folk tin candles.

What are your plans for Father’s Day?

After our recent success with handmade mugs for Mother’s Day, we’re introducing a version for dads too, alongside multi-tools from Gentleman’s Hardware, IZIPIZI sunglasses, dad caps, socks from Le Bon Shoppe, beard oils from Silmachy, as well as some great coffee table books exploring road trips and the outdoors.

How did trading over Easter go for you?

Trading over the Easter period was quite slow - both in the week before and the week after. I think this was partly due to people taking advantage of the two-week school holidays to go away. The weeks prior to Easter were steady.

What products or categories are selling particularly well right now?

Two lines that are selling through well are scents from Inis - Fragrances of Ireland, and Moorland Pottery’s Yorkie Ware mugs, which feature humorous and authentic Yorkshire dialect sayings.

What are your plans for Father’s Day?

Father’s Day is the next calendar event, and I’ll be creating both a window display and a feature table to inspire gift ideas. I have some Alice Wheeler men’s products arriving, along with Selbrae House hip flasks and Lichfield Leather wallets.

www.weebox.co.uk

How did trading over Easter go for you?

Trading over Easter was strong. We had a good uptick in subscriptions over the holiday weekend despite the ongoing international situation. Our biggest market is North America, so it has been a particular challenge.

What products or categories are selling particularly well right now?

We’ve just launched our ‘Outlander’ WeeBox, which is one of our most popular products every year. It’s the last season of the TV series, so interest is high.

What are your plans for Father’s Day?

Our market is predominantly female. However, we’re going to offer a one-off Father’s Day “Laddie WeeBox”, to give our female subscribers an option to gift the experience of Scotland.

James Bowden

Clock Clarks Ware Hertfordshire

What products or categories are selling particularly well right now?

Jellycat are perennial favourites and appeal to a broad age range, though sales are dependent on stock availability. Lisa Angel’s small brightly coloured keepsakes in matchboxes are great pickup lines that retail at £6.

We now stock Miss Sparrow socks all year round and sell multiple pairs a day. Life Charms’ bracelets and earrings, which are silver-plated and presented in gift boxes, make lovely ready-made presents.

Finally, we have a huge range of Isles & Stars’ carded silver- and gold- coloured costume jewellery. New designs are regularly introduced and they are bang on trend.

What are your plans for Fathers Day?

We’re seeing Father’s Day as a growing season year on year. I think dads are rightfully increasingly recognised by millennials, as family dynamics evolve and more dads work in hybrid roles following lockdown. We see more dads in the shop than we used to.  I was paying my regular visit to “Hair by Paul” the other day, and he announced that Father’s Day is now bigger than Valentine’s Day. I humoured him and didn’t disagree. When I went back to the shop, I pulled out the figures for the last few years, and it turns out that unless Valentine’s falls on a weekend, he’s absolutely right. The moral of the tale? Listen to your hairdresser!

My mum is 88 years old and always says that Mothering Sunday is a religious festival celebrated in church, and Father’s Day is a “trumped up Americanism” (I don’t think she even realises the pun she made there!).

Fortunately, the dads of Ware are allowed to celebrate Father’s Day, and we dedicate half of one of our windows to them (which is significant, as social media tells us that 92% of our customers are women buying for women at other times of the year).

If you’re a dad in Ware, then this is what you are getting on June 21: metal trays from Rex London retailing at £9 which are ideal for carrying drinks outside in the summer sun, and metal tins from Rex London which come in four sizes, from £4 to £11. These are good for storing essential small items that mustn’t be thrown away when the “man drawer” is full.

We always ask what the tins will be used for, and so far we’ve been told: a bin for dad’s office, storage for a large spider plant, cutlery in the kitchen, a basil plant on the kitchen windowsill, garlic for a spicy meal, nuts, nails, screws, and old batteries (that probably don’t work).

These tins are designed in London and have a distinct retro feel, featuring olive oil, coffee, cherry, tuc tuc, tomatoes, mackerel & anchovies, honey - the list goes on!

Also for Father’s Day, we sell a surprising amount of candles and reed diffusers from Moss St. Fragrances (a sister brand to Peppermint Grove). Scents include Coconut & Lime, Sage & Cedar, Sandalwood & Sea Salt, and Lemongrass. The packaging is plain and distinctive, in darker colours, and the vessels are simple and unfussy, so they work well for dads.

Of course, dads come in all shapes and sizes, and gifts are no doubt bought from other areas of the shop as well. On the card front, humour is king, and we usually start with an offering of 100-plus designs (about the same as Valentine’s - since my visit to “Hair by Paul”!).

How did trading over Easter go for you?

We had a good Easter in both shops. Buying of Easter gifts and decorations started early, with customers tempted by our windows and in-store displays. We did particularly well with Talking Tables and Gisela Graham, and we recently began stocking Chococo chocolate bars, which have quickly become good sellers for us and featured in our Easter sales.

We perhaps sold less Easter cards than previous years, but overall our greeting card sales continue to grow. Our top-selling ranges are from Cinnamon Aitch (Alice’s Garden), Woodmansterne (Quentin Blake), Kiss Me Kwik, Redback, and Lagon Design Mini Cards.

What products or categories are selling particularly well right now?

St. Eval continues to perform strongly. Home fragrance generally is a core part of our business, selling consistently throughout the year. As we move through spring and into summer, we’re selling candles in tins and ceramics from Paddywax, the new Ashleigh & Burwood range of diffusers, and a new collection from F.Y.G

Jewellery sales grow and grow, with top sellers being Hot Tomato, Lisa Angel, and Big Metal, along with toiletries from Bramley, The Somerset Toiletry Company, and Heathcote & Ivory

Roka, Lua, Powder, Biggie Best, and Walton & Co. also feature highly on our list of top-selling products.

What are your plans for Father’s Day?

We will do both window and in-store displays for Father’s Day and will stock a range of cards, together with gifts, from Pikkii, Gentleman’s Hardware, Roka, and Golunski in particular.

How did trading over Easter go for you?

Easter actually turned out to be a lovely surprise for us. We had a really strong few weeks and even outperformed last year, which, if we’re honest, we didn’t quite expect given the current climate. With everything feeling a bit heavy at the moment, it seems people were leaning more into thoughtful gifting rather than the usual quick buys.

We noticed a real shift in buying habits - customers were choosing keepsake pieces over typical Easter treats. Instead of spending on things that disappear in a day, they were picking gifts that last, feel meaningful, and are more considered.

Maileg bunnies literally hopped out of the shops, even the sleeping ones! So yes, a genuinely positive Easter and a really encouraging reminder that even in tougher times, people still want to give beautifully, just in a more thoughtful way.

What products or categories are selling particularly well right now?

One of our absolute standouts continues to be Maileg. We’ve built such a lovely following for the little mice and their ever-growing world of accessories across both shops. Customers come back time and time again to add to their collections, whether it’s a new character, a tiny outfit, or a piece of furniture. We’re also now seeing customers pre-ordering new releases, which is fantastic.

There’s just something so special about them. Often compared to the mice in Bagpuss, they’re nostalgic, beautifully made, and feel like keepsakes rather than throwaway toys. In a time when people are choosing more meaningful purchases, they really tick every box.

What are your plans for Father’s Day?

Historically, Father’s Day has been a bit quieter for us. However, this year we’re approaching it differently, as we’ve noticed customers are leaning more into thoughtful gifting.

We’ve introduced bespoke “Best Dad in Northampton/Daventry” cards, which add a really personal, local touch. We’ll also start our Father’s Day promotion earlier, with window displays going in before May payday to plant the seed early.

The displays will include Dad and Grandad Maileg mice, cheeky “dad joke”-style gifts, socks, and other male-themed gifts - all fun, accessible, and easy-to-grab ideas for customers.

How did trading over Easter go for you?

We were a bit concerned that, with Easter being so early this year, it wouldn’t be as busy. But the surprising thing for us was that the weather was kind, and the town saw lots of footfall over the Easter break. Staggered school holidays always help keep visitors spread over a longer period.

What products or categories are selling particularly well right now?

Jellycat soft toys are very strong for us and, when we manage to get stock, they sell out very quickly!

What are your plans for Father’s Day?

We’re more of a ‘girly’ shop so we don’t really have a large display for Father’s Day. But we do have some products which are suitable for gifting to dads and grandads, such as mugs, coasters, and body products.

We’ve just topped up our Thistle & Black Pepper range from Scottish Fine Soaps, which is always very popular. We also intend to order some Oddballs underwear to sell alongside our Bawbags range. And LT Creations have just introduced some new footballthemed coasters with a Scottish twist which we will definitely get into the shop.

How did trading over Easter go for you?

We were wonderfully surprised by just how busy we were - it has to be one of the best Easters on record! The weather was a huge help; everyone was out and about, and it just felt very positive.

We had some new lines in, including some gorgeous Galison jigsaws, new chocolate and sweets from Ask Mummy & Daddy, and Miffy was back in the building, which was wonderful!

What products or categories are selling particularly well right now?

We’ve introduced so many new brands this year already, which makes it really hard to pinpoint just a couple. Good Tuesday planners and stationery have gone well, as have Caroline Gardner cards, Blade & Rose Gruffalo babywear designs, and Museums & Galleries cards and napkins have been flying out.

What are your plans for Father’s Day?

We have big plans to cash in on this extra occasion. Traditionally, it’s not big for us, but we’re planning to add some Repeat Repeat mugs that will sit perfectly with chocolate from Bullion Chocolate and popcorn from Joe & Seph’s. We’re really excited about these new brands, and think customers will love them.

Trade talk

We ask leading gift suppliers to reflect on market conditions in the first half, the launches and products set to stand out this summer, and their plans and priorities for the months ahead

How has trading been for you so far this year?

In the UK, trading has been tough. Both consumers and retailers are demanding more bang for their buck. People are loyal to brands they know and trust, and are being more discerning in their purchases, and getting our price points right has never been more important.

Are you exhibiting at any upcoming shows?

We will exhibit at The London Home Fragrance Show in July, showcasing WoodWick and Chesapeake Bay candles. We know home fragrance is a strong sector, and we’re excited to show the reinvented Chesapeake Bay and revamped WoodWick ranges.

What products do you expect to perform strongly this summer?

We expect Beatrix Potter gifts and plush lines to remain the strongest performers, particularly as visitor numbers continue to increase across key UK tourist destinations such as the Lake District, London, and other popular heritage and leisure locations.

Disney by Lolita is a new and exciting collection of glassware which will be delivered to retailers in the summer. Both functional and visually appealing, we’re sure it will be a must-have for many shoppers.

What’s next for your business?

Well… there are a few exciting things bubbling away in the background. They are very confidential at the moment, but watch this space!

How has trading been for you so far this year?

2026 marks our first year of trading in the UK, and the response has exceeded expectations. We’ve built a strong, experienced team of sales agents who will be supporting us at shows throughout the summer. We’ve secured listings with major buying groups, developed beautiful custom products, and continuously enhanced both our website and overall product offering. It’s been an incredibly busy and exciting start.

Are you exhibiting at any upcoming shows?

We will exhibit at Home & Gift, where we’re especially excited to introduce our premium Gift Boxed Paint by Numbers range - beautifully packaged to deliver a luxury experience without the high price point.

What products do you expect to perform strongly this summer?

As this is our first year, it will be interesting to see which products lead the way. Early indicators are very strong for book nooks, supported by our flexible offer - no minimum quantity, a low minimum order value, and favourable terms.

We’re also seeing excellent traction with paint-by-numbers and diamond painting kits. Our licensed ranges, including Harry Potter and Superman, are expected to perform particularly well, thanks to their premium design and attention to detail.

What’s next for your business?

We’re expanding into more UK-themed designs, starting with Highland cows and puffins in paint-by-numbers, launching in July. Following this, we’ll introduce popular themes such as British birds and scenic landscapes. We’re also in discussions with additional licensors and hope to expand our licensed portfolio in the near future.

How has trading been for you so far this year?

Although the current environment is challenging, trading has held up remarkably well. Customers are being careful with their spending and our ‘little & often’ order quantities are perfect for helping customers make the most of their budget.

Are you exhibiting at any upcoming shows?

We will exhibit at Home & Gift and Autumn Fair. Our buying team has been extremely busy and we will showcase over 2,500 new items at these shows. Highlights include extensions to our bestselling Village Pottery Collection, lots of beautiful new ceramics, and much more.

What products do you expect to perform strongly this summer?

Our Cheery Crochet collection has performed extremely well and there are lots of new additions this summer. The mix of brightly coloured intricate crochet keepsakes with uplifting messages has really hit the mark, and we have lots of new additions coming soon. Our Village Pottery Shops range continues to grow, and new additions this summer are hotly anticipated.

What’s next for your business?

Our focus for the future remains the same: delivering the best possible service to our customers, and constantly looking for ways to better support and add value to their businesses. New products are the lifeblood of our industry, and we’re committed to bringing fresh, relevant ranges to market.

How has trading been for you so far this year?

Trading has been good, with consistent orders from trade clients for existing collections, as well as new releases, and lots of new bespoke collections lined up.

What products do you expect to perform strongly this summer?

Our Trooping the Colour and Quintessentially London collections are expected to do well, both with trade clients and direct retail, and sales have started strongly for both so far. Our bestselling products are always our fine bone china mugs, which Victoria Eggs is best known for.

What’s next for your business?

There’s a large focus on bespoke collections, with some exciting new clients and new ranges for existing bespoke clients. I’m also working on a new design celebrating the beautiful city of Edinburgh, which will join our everyday core collections once released.

How has trading been for you so far this year?

We’ve had an excellent year so far. Despite some challenging economic conditions, momentum has remained strong. We’ve seen great demand from independent retailers across the UK, as well as some larger names, and it’s been fantastic to receive so much interest and enthusiasm for Kaweco.

We expect this positive momentum to continue into the second half, and we’re gearing up operationally for what we anticipate will be our strongest Christmas trading period to date. We’re incredibly grateful for the support of our retailers and proud to represent such a well-established and exciting brand. It really feels like Kaweco’s moment in the UK, and we’re looking forward to building on this success.

Are you exhibiting at any upcoming shows?

We’ll be exhibiting at Home & Gift. We have some very exciting launches coming up and are really looking forward to revealing the next phase of this year’s releases. In particular, I’m especially excited about this year’s Collection product. It really stood out when I had a sneak peek earlier in the year and feels like a defining addition to the Kaweco range.

What products do you expect to perform strongly this summer?

The Kaweco Sport continues to be our strongest-performing product family across both metal and plastic finishes. The classic colours go from strength to strength, and the rich variety of shades appeals to a broad range of customers.

The new Kaweco LUNAR Sport is also performing very well, and with additional colours launching later this year, it will be exciting to see how this range continues to grow.

What’s next for your business?

It’s an exciting time at Studio Pens. This year, we relocated to a larger warehouse and office space just across the road, and our team continues to grow. We may be a small team, but we’re ambitious and driven, and believe there’s a lot more to come. We’re making improvements across all areas of the business, with growth very much on the horizon. As distributors of three strong brands, our focus is on expanding into new areas of distribution and delivering a great service.

How has trading been for you so far this year?

Like many businesses across the industry, we’re operating in a challenging marketplace as consumers continue to be mindful of discretionary spending, making more considered purchasing decisions.

That said, we’ve been really pleased with how the year has started for University Games and Lagoon. Retailers are continuing to look for products that deliver strong value, gifting appeal, and broad family entertainment, and that plays directly into our strengths.

We’ve received a great response to our new launches for 2026, including the Pundamental card games and puzzles range, our Pocket Dice collection and the football-themed Squeeze Poppers.

We’ve continued to see demand for products that are compact, affordable, and easy to merchandise, especially those that work well as impulse purchases or travel-friendly entertainment. This has created some exciting opportunities for us across multiple retail channels.

What products do you expect to perform strongly this summer?

We expect our Squeeze Poppers ranges, both animal and licensed football collections, to be standout performers. They are fun, tactile products that work brilliantly for both indoor and outdoor play, making them ideal for school holidays, travel, and summer gifting.

From a retail perspective, they also tick a lot of boxes. The eco-friendly, compact packaging creates a very small shelf footprint, which is increasingly important for retailers where space is at a premium, while still delivering strong visual impact in-store.

We’re also very excited about our new Sports and Licensed Football Pocket Dice ranges. These are perfect for summer travel and family days out as they are quick to learn, easy to play, and presented in smart countertop CDUs, making them great pick-up items at the till.

What’s next for your business?

The next big event in the diary for us is Home & Gift, which is always an important opportunity to connect with both existing and new retail partners. Following the success of last year’s show, we’ll once again have two dedicated stands showcasing the very best of both the University Games and Lagoon ranges across games, puzzles, and gifts.

We’re particularly excited about several major launches arriving over the coming months, including our new Peppa Pig and That’s Not My… preschool ranges, as well as the hilarious Pundamental collection and the Madame Blanc Murder Mystery Party range.

Home & Gift will also give us the chance to unveil even more new products planned for later in the year, so it’s shaping up to be a very busy and exciting second half.

How has trading been for you so far this year?

Like every year, it’s had its ups and downs - part and parcel of the cycle. You do the shows, and suddenly it’s full-on: a big influx of orders and enquiries, everything moving quickly, and you’re rushing around trying to keep on top of it all (while enjoying the buzz too).

Then you get through that wave, and it quietens down again. The “tumbleweed” moment never gets any less uncomfortable, especially around April and May with all the bank holidays, when everything seems to pause. When you’re trying to grow a business, even a short spell of silence can feel quite daunting.

That said, it’s been a positive start. We’ve introduced a lot of new products, alongside some strong bestsellers, and launched a few new designs, which are always a bit of an unknown. Thankfully, The Zest and The Blooms, launched at Spring Fair, have been really well received. We’ve also brought on a couple of new licensing partners over the past few months, which is exciting, as it means more complementary products sitting alongside our ranges.

Are you exhibiting at any upcoming shows?

Yes - Home & Gift and Autumn Fair. We’ve got some lovely newness to share. First up is our long-awaited The Pooches range, which we’re so excited about. It’s full of all your favourite dogs, brought together across mugs, tea towels and even home fragrance. After such an amazing response to the artwork, it felt like the perfect time to bring it to life as a full collection.

We’re also launching The Winter - a calm, beautifully considered range of landscape designs with a subtle touch of winter sparkle. It’s all about those quieter, seasonal moments and bringing that feeling into the home.

Then there’s In the Air - a fun, colourful collection inspired by hot air balloons. It’s something a bit more playful, perfect for summer and adding a fresh lift to the overall offering. It’s a real mix of styles, but all very true to us: design-led, story-driven, and made to sit beautifully in everyday spaces.

What products do you expect to perform strongly this summer?

You never really know what’s going to land when you introduce new designs and products; it’s very much a “suck it and see” situation. That said, our signature ranges tend to do the heavy lifting year after year. Designs featuring our Highland Cow, Stag, Puffin, Bee, British Birds, and Hare have become real staples for us. They’ve got that timeless feel and a strong connection with customers, so they never really go out of fashion.

We’re also seeing a real uplift from our brighter, more seasonal collections. Zest and Blooms bring a fresh feel - light, colourful, and easy to gift or introduce into the home. In the Air is something a little different, and we’re hoping it will really resonate over the summer months. Having consistent bestsellers alongside fresh designs gives us a strong balance going into the season.

What’s next for your business?

We’re excited to be back at shows - they’re such an important part of the year for us. Looking ahead, I’d love to build a stronger international presence and start exhibiting further afield.

Licensing is another big focus. We’re keen to grow that side of the business and work with more partners on products we don’t currently manufacture ourselves, like bedding and other home categories that naturally sit alongside our ranges.

We’re also working on some charity Christmas card collections, which feels really meaningful. Being able

to use what we do to support a couple of great causes is something we’re really proud of. Alongside that, it’s a lot of listening to our retailers - what’s selling, where price points need to sit, and what they feel is missing. We’re constantly developing new products with that in mind, and hopefully bringing ideas to the table that work for them as much as they do for us.

So, a mix of growth, new partnerships, and plenty of product developmentkeeping things moving while staying very true to what we do. And of course, keep dipping our toes into the unknown.

Donny Carstairs

How has trading been for you so far this year?

Positive overall, especially in the UK where we’re seeing stronger demand for high-quality, considered gifting. Retailers are curating more deliberately and responding well to products with a clear story and material authenticity.

Internationally trading has been more mixed, particularly in the US, where tariff changes and rising shipping costs have impacted margins. We’ve adapted pricing and our structure to protect margins, while maintaining steady demand from key accounts.

Are you exhibiting at any upcoming shows?

We’ve just completed seven trade events across five countries in six weeks and will next exhibit at Exclusively and Home & Gift, alongside supporting rep groups across the US and Canada. We’re especially excited to present our mistletoe range, which brings colour across stone, cork, slate and ceramics, alongside our evolving slate and olive wood collections.

What products do you expect to perform strongly this summer?

We expect our Green Flora collection to perform strongly. Since launching in January, it now makes up over 50% of everyday orders. Its fresh, natural feel works perfectly for alfresco dining and helps retailers create cohesive seasonal displays.

What’s next for your business?

Looking ahead, our rebrand to Selbrae House reflects a more design-led direction. We’re focused on refining the collection, developing new products, and building long-term retail relevance.
