Welcome to our Harrogate Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival preview issue. This four-day exhibition returns to the picturesque Yorkshire spa town on July 19, and is one of the most anticipated events in the gift trading calendar.

The show made its debut in 1960, and over the years it has earned an excellent reputation - not just as a key sourcing platform, but as an industry gathering that blends business and pleasure, as the contributors to this issue’s Shop Talk and Trade Talk sections testify.

As I write this, the sun has certainly got its hat on, and the bright weather seems to match the mood. Having spoken to exhibitors and retailers, it’s clear there’s a real sense of enthusiasm and affection for this event.

In the words of Elaine Nolan, sales and business development manager UK, Australia and Europe at Inis the Energy of the Sea: “For me, Home & Gift has a bit of a festival feel - full of colour, food, the clinking of glasses, music, and plenty of laughter. What more could anyone want? It doesn’t feel like work at all!”

Inis will be exhibiting at Home & Gift on stand DP1-C91, and we’re proud to say the company is our Cover Star. Elaine explains that earlier this year it launched a Hair Care range - a fresh addition to the Inis family and an exciting addition for its trade show stand this season.

She explains: “Designed to complement the existing bath, body, and fragrance ranges, the collection combines effective performance with nourishing ingredients inspired by the ocean, delivering healthy-looking hair infused with the unmistakable freshness of Inis.” Find out more about the range on page 40.

We also asked retailers for their thoughts on the show, and their views

are echoed by seasoned attendee Sophie Edwards, partner at More Than Just a Gift at Narborough Hall in Leicester.

“I’ve attended every single Home & Gift since 1994, and the thing that keeps me coming back is always inspiration!” she says. “It’s the perfect time of year to take a few days out of the usual routine and absorb a whole host of new products and fresh ideas ready for the A/W season.

“We love that it has such a relaxed and creative environment. You can step outside to enjoy the (hopefully nice!) weather and atmosphere while planning how to make the most of all the newness you’ve just taken on board.”

To give you a head start, we’ve compiled a comprehensive preview of the event featuring pages of new launches. The issue also includes features on plush, novelty and retro gifts, and much more - as well as previews of two other shows: The Gift Fair UK and Harrogate Christmas & Gift.

The latter is a firm favourite of our retail interviewee Sam Dewhirst, visitor experience supervisor - retail at The Savill Garden Visitor Centre Gift Shop in Windsor Great Park, which won the Best Non-Specialist Retailer Of Gifts category at The Greats Gift Retailer Awards 2026.

He says that for him, based south of Windsor town centre on the border of Berkshire and Surrey, Harrogate is a long way to go, “but it’s a lovely place and means we can get a few of our large Christmas orders sorted in one go”.

We are always keen to hear from retailers - and suppliers - who would like to take part in our features, interviews, or news pages. You can email me at clare@lemapublishing.co.uk or connect with me on LinkedIn. And look out for the Gifts Today team at Harrogate - do stop us and stay hello!

TThe Gift Fair UK organiser XpoFairs has introduced Matchmaker AI to transform how buyers discover suppliers through intent, not keywords. Gifts Today finds out more…

he way we search for and discover products is changing fast. For decades, sourcing online has followed a familiar pattern: browse categories, apply filters, and search by product type. While effective at scale, most buyers will recognise that in reality it often means sifting through hundreds of options to find what truly fits their needs.

Now, the upcoming Gift Fair UK is introducing a new approach. At the centre of this shift is a new agentic AI-powered feature, recently launched as part of The Gift Fair platform.

Built using insights from previous shows to reflect how buyers actually think, the system allows users to search not by product characteristics, but by their business objectives.

In simple terms, agentic AI means the system doesn’t just respond to keywords; instead, it understands intent and actively works towards an outcome. It can also take action on your behalf.

Whether it’s finding the right contact details, arranging store visits, sourcing pricing and MOQ information, or gathering product details, the Matchmaker AI helps reduce the manual effort traditionally involved in sourcing. Instead of searching for “candles” or “gift sets”, buyers can now ask: “Show me bestselling gifts under £20”, “Take me to booths with sustainable homeware suppliers”, and “Introduce me to emerging brands not on the high street”.

The result is a more direct connection between intention and outcome, helping buyers identify relevant suppliers faster and with greater confidence.

This innovation comes at a time of significant growth for The Gift Fair ecosystem. Recent figures highlight strong and accelerating engagement:

• Over 8,400 unique buyers attended The Gift Fair USA

• More than 13,000 unique users engaged with the show

• 65% of traffic was driven via mobile devices

• Buyers spanned over 17 distinct retail categories across the US

• Core areas of interest included gifting and accessories

These numbers reflect not only the scale but also the diversity of demand, from independent retailers to larger multi-category buyers seeking differentiated

to purpose

product ranges. The introduction of agentic AI builds on this momentum by addressing a key industry challenge: relevance.

As Fabian Santoro from The Gift Fair UK explains: “Increasingly, buyers don’t start with a product, they start with a goal. Whether that’s improving margins, sourcing sustainably, or finding something new for their customers, the intent comes first. Our goal has always been to connect that intent with the right suppliers.”

By aligning the serendipity of discovery with real-world objectives, the platform reduces time spent searching while improving the quality of matches between buyers and brands - ultimately lowering time, cost, and effort on both sides.

For suppliers, this represents a shift in how they are discovered. Rather than relying solely on optimising websites, growing social media audiences, or sending outreach at scale, brands are surfaced based on how well they meet specific buyer needs, opening up new opportunities for meaningful differentiation.

As The Gift Fair continues to expand across both UK and US markets, this approach signals a broader evolution in trade buying behaviour - one that blends traditional relationships with intelligent, outcome-driven discovery.

In an industry built on connection, the tools used to make those connections are now evolving. And for buyers and suppliers alike, the implications are significant. Be the first to experience it this September at The Gift Fair UK.

Exclusively Show builds on success

Exclusively Show (organised by BHETA) returned to the Business Design Centre in London on June 9 and June 10, bringing together more than 130 exhibitors representing over 250 brands.

New trade website for Alice Wheeler London

Fancy Metal Goods (FMG), the company behind the British-designed lifestyle and accessories brand Alice Wheeler London, has launched an enhanced trade website, providing retailers with a faster, more intuitive, and efficient ordering experience ahead of the Autumn/Winter trading period.

Developed with direct input from retail partners, the platform features live stock availability, enabling retailers to view current inventory levels in real time and place orders with confidence, online or through their sales representative. It also includes bulk-order uploads, a quick-SKU ordering tool, and downloadable product imagery to support online listings, social media, and marketing.

The launch comes ahead of Alice Wheeler London’s appearance at Home & Gift, where it will showcase its Autumn/Winter collections and demonstrate the platform. Retailers will continue to benefit from the brand’s experienced sales team and network of agents across the UK and Ireland, reinforcing FMG’s ongoing commitment to supporting retail partners.

Strong buyer attendance reinforced the show’s position as a key industry event, with representatives from major retailers including Harrods, Marks & Spencer, Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Lidl, Ocado, Currys, Boots, B&Q, Costco, Wayfair, Robert Dyas, Next, Amazon, Lakeland, TK Maxx, Argos and John Lewis. They were joined by independent retailers, department stores, garden centres, online marketplaces, and HORECA businesses.

Celebrity appearances added to the atmosphere, with Tommy Banks, John Torode, Matt Tebbutt, Jeremy Pang, and Lynsey ‘Queen of Clean’ Crombie joining exhibitors throughout the show.

A standout feature was the reimagined Trend Showcase, a multi-sensory space highlighting emerging consumer trends expected to influence retail in 2027. The event also launched its first London Store Tour for international visitors, reflecting growing overseas interest.

Exhibition director Will Jones said the show delivered “a strong turnout of quality visitors” and praised the positive response to new visitor initiatives, particularly the London Store Tour.

Exclusively Show returns to the Business Design Centre in London on June 8 and June 9, 2027.

John Lewis to invest £50m across five stores

John Lewis is investing £50m across five stores this year as part of a wider push to turn its estate into more experience-led retail destinations.

The stores benefiting are Glasgow, Cambridge, Leicester, Reading and Liverpool. Glasgow will receive over £20m in a full redevelopment, which marks the retailer’s largest recent single-store investment. Every floor of the 28,000sqm store will be upgraded across fashion, beauty, home and technology, while it remains open throughout the refurbishment, which runs until spring 2027.

The programme sits within a wider £800m brand transformation, which will eventually see investment made across all 36 stores.

John Lewis managing director Peter Ruis said: “Whether customers shop with us online, in our shops, or across both, they expect the same trusted advice, service and experience. We’re continuing to invest across our estate so our shops reflect the things customers value most about John Lewis: expert guidance, inspiring products, and the confidence to make the right choice.

“These investments are about more than just a fresh look. They are about creating places where customers love to spend their time. The response from customers to the improvements we’ve already made gives us confidence to continue investing for the long term.”

Fresh festive finds for gift retailers

As

the UK’s only exhibition dedicated exclusively to the festive sector, Harrogate Christmas & Gift 2027 brings together leading suppliers, the latest products, and emerging trends for gift retailers

For independent gift retailers, January marks the start of a new buying season, making Harrogate Christmas & Gift an essential date in the trade calendar. Returning to the Harrogate Convention Centre from January 10 to January 13 2027, the UK’s only exhibition dedicated exclusively to the festive sector o ers buyers the opportunity to discover new products, explore emerging trends, and strengthen relationships with key suppliers ahead of the busiest retail period of the year.

The 2027 show is already attracting strong support, with an excellent mix of returning exhibitors and first-time participants, promising one of the most diverse product line-ups in recent years.

From Christmas decorations and lighting to giftware, home accessories, floristry, stationery, and gourmet food gifts, buyers will find thousands of products designed to inspire fresh retail displays and drive seasonal sales.

Today’s consumers are increasingly looking for gifts that combine style, quality, and value, while also reflecting changing lifestyles. As a result, retailers will find exhibitors showcasing everything from eco-conscious giftware and sustainable home décor to artisancrafted accessories, personalised gifts, luxury home fragrance, wellness-inspired collections, and a ordable ‘little luxuries’ that encourage impulse purchases. These trends continue to perform strongly throughout the year, allowing retailers to invest in collections with appeal well beyond the festive season.

Among the established names returning are Gisela Graham, renowned for timeless Christmas styling and decorative accessories; Premier Decorations and Kaemingk BV, both showcasing an extensive collection of festive decorations, lighting, and artificial trees; Heaven Sends and Lesser & Pavey, both presenting an ever-popular mix of giftware, home décor, and lifestyle products; APAC Group and Smart Garden Products (Three Kings), with huge catalogues of products on display in Hall Q; Candlelight, with contemporary home accessories and fragrance collections; Floralsilk featuring high-quality artificial florals and botanical décor; together with Langs, Festive Productions, and many more. Alongside these familiar favourites, buyers will also have the opportunity to discover innovative new suppliers making their Harrogate debut.

One of the exhibition’s enduring strengths is its relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Unlike larger international trade shows, Harrogate gives buyers the time and space to explore collections properly, discuss merchandising ideas, compare ranges, and build long-term supplier relationships. It’s an environment where conversations are as valuable as the products themselves.

The compact layout of the Harrogate Convention Centre makes the buying experience particularly efficient, with exhibition halls, hotels, cafés, and restaurants within easy walking distance. Visitors can comfortably explore every stand while enjoying the welcoming hospitality that has become synonymous with the event.

As retailers continue to seek fresh ideas to encourage customers to visit their shops, Harrogate Christmas & Gift provides the perfect opportunity to stay ahead of trends, discover new product launches, and source collections that will stand out on the shop floor.

Whether looking for traditional festive décor, contemporary home accessories, gourmet gifting, sustainable products, or everyday bestsellers, buyers will find inspiration around every corner.

For independent gift shops, garden centres, department stores, visitor attractions, and destination retailers alike, Harrogate Christmas & Gift remains the place where successful Christmas retailing begins.

Park life

Gifts Today talks to Sam Dewhirst, visitor experience supervisor - retail of The Savill Garden Visitor Centre Gift Shop in Windsor Great Park, which won the Best Non-Specialist

Retailer Of Gifts category at The Greats Gift Retailer Awards 2026

Located south of Windsor town centre on the border of Berkshire and Surrey, Windsor Great Park has a rich history spanning more than 1,000 years. The Savill Garden was created in 1932 and opened to the public in 1953.

As visitor numbers grew, the Savill Garden Visitor Centre building opened in 2006, bringing together a gift shop, restaurant and co ee shop. Shortlisted for the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize in 2007, the building is renowned for its spectacular 90-metre timber gridshell roof, which Sam describes as spectacular and well worth visiting in its own right.

Congratulations on your Greats Award win. How did you feel when you heard the news, and what do you think sets your business apart from other gift retailers?  We were thrilled. It’s so nice to get recognition. I think what sets us apart is the location and building our gift shop sits within. It’s awe-inspiring and feels very special before you even take a closer look inside the gift shop.

How would you describe your range?

It’s a gift and homeware range that represents Great Britain, sustainability, and classic countryside living –with a few twists. We’re always looking for exciting new brands that you can’t find in many other places, and we’re really pushing to only take new suppliers that manufacture in the UK.

How do you source products?

We use Spring Fair, and the Gift of the Year Awards for inspiration, and we also get lots of suppliers emailing us directly. Although we can’t use them all, we do find some good local suppliers this way. We’re always looking to see what suppliers have that is UK-made,

local, or o ers strong sustainability credentials – as well as stock that’s a bit di erent.

Harrogate Christmas & Gift is a favourite show too. It’s a long way to go, but it’s a lovely place and means we can get a few of our large Christmas orders sorted in one go. My team and boss often send me photos of stock they’ve seen out and about while visiting other attractions too.

How has trading been this year?

Very strong so far. We’re hoping this continues with talk of a ‘staycation’ year giving us confidence that strong sales will continue through the summer.

Which categories are performing well?

Since we opened our Adventure Play playground in 2023, kids’ toys and games and soft toys have become some of our best-performing categories. Homeware is always a top category, and our new bespoke Windsor Great Park range from The English Soap Company, launched this January, has been a great success. So the fragrance category is performing very well, thanks to this range.

Any surprise hits?

We brought in Dog & Bond around two years ago when we were looking to change our pet section. We really liked the products and the lovely packaging but we didn’t expect sales of its Doggy Ice-Cream Kit to be quite so good. The whole range does really well, and founder Avi Nagel is great to work with, so it’s been a real success story.

How do you promote the shop?

Our social media team is great at showing o our shops, but a lot of our business comes from returning visitors, especially those who have attended our Windsor Great

Park Illuminated light trail in winter and return in spring or summer to experience the rest of the Park.

Do you offer any services?

We o er gift vouchers that can be redeemed against retail, tickets and memberships, and we’ve recently started selling some bespoke lines on our website, with an eye to increasing this to a full online shop.

We also create pop-up shops at local events. Two successful examples this year were the Royal Windsor Horse Show and the Windsor Flower Show, where we showcased bestsellers.

What’s next?

Next for us is to create a few more bespoke ranges following the success of our current ranges - we’re working on a few exciting projects. We’ve also started working with the Windsor Farm Shop more since its transition to The Crown Estate ownership in 2024, so expect our food section to transform!

What’s the most rewarding part of your role?

Getting recognition like the Greats Award and seeing products I’ve brought in sell well and be enjoyed by visitors. Also, just being in the Park on my lunch break is very rewarding. A 30-minute walk does wonders to reset my focus.

I also enjoy working at our pop-up shops as I like the logistics around set-up and take-down, and the atmosphere at these events is always great.

What’s your current favourite gift on your shelves?

The Fox Under The Moon range. I brought this in a

few years ago after seeing the Daily Quotes calendar at a Gift of the Year event, and we’ve been steadily expanding it since. Co-founders Jamie and Stacey O’Neill are great to work with, and the range is consistently popular. It has great wellness messages too.

Who’s been your most frustrating customer - and why?

The most frustrating, and it happens quite frequently, is the customer who comes in and asks: “Where’s XX, I was here two weeks, two months, two years ago and it was on a table here?” Our stock rotates fast, so you need to buy it when you see it!

What’s the strangest customer request you’ve had?

Last year, a visitor kept bringing us baby geese from Cow Pond, about a 10-minute walk from the Visitor Centre, because she was concerned about them being eaten, not realising that capturing and moving them was also harmful!

And finally, is there anything else that you would like to add/highlight?

It’s great to work for a business like The Crown Estate. It’s such a varied role that gives us opportunities to get engaged with di erent projects as we all work together as one team.

Not only do I get to find great products for our visitors in a beautiful setting, but I do so with the knowledge that our profits go back to the Treasury for the benefit of the nation, which is the icing on the cake.

We also work with suppliers to provide a more rounded o ering including Allsorted, Jellycat, Orange Tree Toys, ThreadBear Design, Rex London, House of Marbles, The Puppet Company, St. Eval, Coach House, Garden Trading, Museums & Galleries, Woodmansterne, Jarapa, Burgon & Ball, Fallen Fruits, Fox Under The Moon, Enamel Happy, BonBons, Bay Tree, Cotswold Fayre, Royal Collection Trust, PoM, Powder, Pachamama, Floralsilk, and Gisela Graham

“Now is our time

Newly appointed Giftware Association (GA) Chair Stephen Illingworth believes the gift industry is facing its greatest challenges in decades - but also some of its biggest opportunities. Following his appointment at the GA’s AGM, held at the historic Warwick Castle last month, he talks to Gifts Today about collaboration, adapting to change, and navigating a fast-moving market

Congratulations on your appointment as Chair of The Giftware Association (GA). What does taking on this role mean to you personally and professionally?

My family and I have grown up in this industry for five generations and it has been central to our entire lives and livelihood. The people, entrepreneurial spirit, and innovations that have sustained all of the companies in this trade have inspired me throughout my career. So to now serve them and spearhead our industry body, especially at such a time as this, is honestly one of the greatest honours and opportunities of my life.

I’m excited, grateful, and so humbled by the people that have gone before me - and especially thankful to former Chair Mark Jones (commercial director of Gisela Graham) for the work he has done ahead of my move into this role in challenging times.

As owner and CEO of Widdop and Co., what experience and perspective will you bring to the role?

As a family business, Widdop and Co. is so much more than a job or profession, and I feel the same way about this role. From start-ups and innovators to large multinational retailers, this diverse industry needs more support and

advocacy as it evolves for the times we are in.

By leading our 140-year-old business through countless evolutions and challenges, especially over the last three years since our MBO, I’ve become very familiar with the challenges and opportunities of change and am unfazed by the work this role requires. You’ve described this as an important time for the industry. Why do you believe this is such a pivotal moment?

It’s quite simple really. Our industry is under more pressure today than at any time in my life. From rising costs, supply chain complexity and regulation to competition from companies like Temu and Shein, the pace of change - and the need to adapt even faster - is unprecedented. However, in the face of the challenge, I still genuinely believe the opportunities for people and businesses in our industry are amazing, and there is so much to be excited about for the future if we embrace change, collaborate more, and shout a little louder about all the good going on and the support that the government especially should be providing. That is precisely the role of the GA and I’m excited that now is our time to step up.

How would you assess the current state of the giftware industry, and where do you

see the greatest opportunities for growth and innovation?

The industry is under pressure, but the opportunities created for businesses that offer great service, tell great stories, or generate innovation are greater than ever.

Irrespective of the cost of living, consumers will always, in some form, give gifts, immerse themselves in great stories, decorate their homes, and celebrate life’s moments.

In an increasingly connected market, I genuinely think that styles, trends, and cultures are increasingly global. So I see opportunity in export, as well as here at home, for all those companies that embrace how those consumers interact and engage with product. What are the biggest challenges currently facing suppliers, brands and retailers, and how can the GA help address them?

In a market of increasing shopping channels, more global competition, increasing regulation, higher costs, and less predictable demand, leading a retail or wholesale gift or homeware business is hard.

The GA exists to be the trusted partner for all suppliers and retailers in our market by providing heavily discounted or fully inclusive access to

to step up”

valuable services, education, training and events. It should be the go-to place for everyone in our trade to find the answers they need to thrive as individuals and businesses in our industry.

This is all in addition to the important work of championing our members collectively through advocacy, awards, lobbying, and international trade development and research, supported by the British Allied Trades Federation (BATF) and its members and resources. In short, GA membership should be one of the most indispensable and valuable assets for any business in our trade. How important is collaboration across the industry, and what role can the GA play in bringing businesses together?

With many of the challenges we face being outside of the control of any one company or individual, collaboration feels more important than ever in our trade.

Far too often in recent years, our industry has felt fractured and less joined up when debating the solutions and issues we face. From the future of trade shows to the packaging tax, and from the fight against business rates and NI to the reform of market access for Chinese ecommerce retailers, there are a lot of central issues to address.

The GA should be a conduit for opinion and a channel for louder, more powerful action for its members - similar to what we’ve seen recently in the hospitality sector. And that power only comes with more members and more collaboration.

The GA continues to evolve into a more modern and connected organisation. How do you plan to build on that momentum?

When the GA was created by Elkan Simons CBE 80 years ago, it represented a different era of fancy goods retail and wholesale, and today’s market would be unrecognisable and probably scary to the founding team.

Globalisation of markets and multi-channel retail, particularly e-commerce, have created so much opportunity for innovative businesses to create and distribute worldwide. It would be impossible to have missed the rise in sudden trend-led product spikes on a global scale in recent years.

From the Stanley Cup and Jellycat to NeeDoh, these phenomena are just some examples of how quickly great product can change the global marketplace. Similarly, but at the opposite end of the scale, crises from shipping and oil prices to tari s and pandemics can destroy markets just as quickly.

It is in this new world that the GA has had, and must continue, to change - not just to stay relevant in supporting our members but also to ensure that we are agile and prepared to react quickly when the industry has a new or emerging need.

Looking ahead, what are your priorities for your first year as Chair?

I’m excited to continue building momentum over the next year, given that much of Mark’s two years was focused on resetting the organisation for the future.

But now with a stronger, growing committeeHolly, Meg, Stephen, Demi and Jackson (all new this year) - and a better value proposition, my priorities can be summarised as:

• Increasing membership value through more discounts, offers, unique and specialist services

• Evolving the organisation structure to ensure major expansion of the membership base

• Continuing to strengthen the national committee

• Internationalising Gift of the Year and offering more value to winners

• Supporting the industry by connecting buyers and sellers

What message would you like to share with existing members about the opportunities ahead?

Get involved. I won’t have met most of our members or the readers of this interview, but those who know me will know I’m both determined and transparent. As such, I trust that our members will believe me when I say that our new team is working relentlessly for you and will have so much more impact if you get more involved and make sure everyone you know in our trade is part of what we’re doing.  Finally, what would you say to businesses that are not yet members about the benefits of becoming part of the GA community?

The team and I want to help your business. We also know that spending money frivolously on membership in this climate would be reckless. As such, we ask you to simply take a look at the value we can offer and then give us a chance.

It is our mission to o er all of our members immense and immeasurable value so that being a part of what we are doing feels like an essential spend and a non-negotiable.

The power of play

As consumer spending becomes more considered, plush, retro and novelty gifts are proving that emotional connection and memorable experiences matter more than ever, says Gemma Sault, managing director of The Giftware Association

Buying gifts can be a minefield.

We’ve all been there. You want something meaningful, but suddenly you’re standing at a till with a bottle of wine and a slightly panicked smile. Now, absolutely no judgement - there’s always a time and a place for wine - but today’s consumers are looking for more. They want something considered, di erent, and ideally not the fourth version of the same gift they’ve already unwrapped that week.

This is where plush, retro and novelty gifting step in and, quite frankly, they’re doing a lot of the heavy lifting for our industry right now. If there’s one thing uniting these categories, it’s this: they make people feel something.

Modern gifting is no longer about obligation; it’s about reaction. Laughter, comfort, recognition, nostalgia… even a well-timed “that is brilliant” will do nicely.

Plush: the industry’s quiet powerhouse

Let’s talk about plush: arguably the biggest glowup in gifting. Once a children’s category, it has firmly stepped into the lifestyle space. Plush now delivers something incredibly relevant: comfort, collectability, and emotional connection. In a world that feels, at times, slightly relentless, consumers are actively seeking tactile, reassuring products that provide a sense of calm. And yes, that absolutely includes adults.

Brands like Warmies , Widdop & Co. , Langs and Wrendale Designs are getting this right, creating products that aren’t just opened and forgotten, but live on desks, shelves, and sofas as part of someone’s everyday life. And with kidults driving a growing proportion of purchases, plush isn’t a side category anymore. It’s a serious commercial opportunity.

Retro: selling the past, brilliantly

If plush is about comfort, retro is about memory - and memory happens to be very good for business. Nostalgia is one of the strongest emotional drivers we have. It reconnects people with who they were, what they loved, and moments that felt simpler.

Suppliers like Fizz Creations and Mele & Co. tip the balance perfectly. They’re not just recreating the past, they’re curating it. Giving it just enough of a modern update to feel fresh, without losing what made it special in the first place.

Novelty: the unsung hero

And let’s not underestimate novelty; it’s often the category quietly driving add-on sales and impulse purchases. But it’s earned that position. Today’s novelty works because it feels personal, delivers a reaction, and has a reason to exist.

Businesses like Elgate Products, Kikkerland, and Bubblegum Stu thrive here because they understand the balance: it’s not about the cheapest laugh, it’s about the one people remember. And in tighter markets, that matters even more.

Gifting in a tough market

Budgets are under pressure; it’s no secret. But gifting hasn’t disappeared. It never does. People still celebrate. They still show up. And importantly, they still want to get it right. What changes is how they shop: they’re more selective, more thoughtful, and more focused on impact over price.

This is where plush, retro and novelty really come into their own. They deliver meaning without a big spend, create memorability without complexity, and o er something di erent without risk. Because, let’s be honest, turning up empty-handed is still not a viable strategy in most friendships.

Where the opportunity lies

What we’re seeing isn’t just a trend; it’s a shift. Consumers are moving towards connection over convenience, emotion over excess, and story over standardisation. And that plays directly to the strengths of our industry.

This is where businesses like Eat Sleep Doodle, with creativity at its core, and design-led brands across our sector really shine. It’s not about scale, it’s about ideas, personality, and relevance - literally bringing products to life. It’s also where independent retail has a real advantage: the ability to curate, surprise, and create moments of discovery.

The bigger picture

At its heart, gifting is simple. People want to make other people feel good. They want to show they’ve thought about something. Ideally, they want a reaction better than “oh… thanks”. Plush, retro and novelty gifts deliver that.

They help us laugh, find comfort, reconnect, and occasionally buy something we didn’t know we needed until we saw it. And in a market that can often feel crowded and transactional, that’s incredibly powerful.

Gifting isn’t going anywhere. If anything, it’s becoming more intentional, more emotional, and more creative. Our role is to lead that. To create products that surprise, delight, and resonate. Because the best gifts aren’t always the most expensive or the most technical. They’re the ones people remember.

Managing Director Gemma Sault, (above and right)

The business of joy

With the final quarter approaching, Lesser & Pavey director Jonny Greves looks ahead to the most important trading period of the year and the key opportunities it presents for independent retailers and the wider gift trade

As we move into the second half of the year, I can’t help but feel optimistic about our industry. If the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that the gift trade - and independent retailers in particular - is incredibly resilient.

Of course, there are still challenges. Global events continue to create uncertainty, and ongoing tensions have contributed to higher freight costs and unavoidable delays. However, our industry has always been adaptable, and retailers have repeatedly shown an impressive ability to navigate changing conditions.

One trend that continues to stand out is the demand for what we like to call “small luxuries”.

Consumers may be spending more carefully, but they still want products that bring enjoyment, comfort and a little everyday indulgence. Whether it’s a thoughtful gift for a loved one or a treat for themselves, a ordable luxuries remain a great opportunity.

We’re also seeing the continued growth of selfgifting and self-care. Customers are increasingly looking for products that enhance their homes, lift their mood, or create a moment of relaxation. This is where gift and homeware retailers can be perfectly positioned.

At Lesser & Pavey, we’ve seen this reflected in the popularity of our Maison Parfum home fragrance collection. This range of premium reed di users combines beautiful fragrances with elegant packaging, making it ideal for both gifting and home décor. The addition of William Morris designs continues to resonate strongly with consumers, reflecting the enduring appeal of one of Britain’s most recognisable design themes.

The same can be said for our William Morris Bath & Body collection, which perfectly captures the growing demand for gifting, self-gifting and wellnessinspired purchases.

Meanwhile, our Stained Glass LED Lights o er something a little di erent for important back-end and Christmas selling season, providing eye-catching displays and strong gift appeal as the nights draw in.

All of this feeds into what many are calling the “Joy Economy”. In a world often dominated by negative headlines, people are actively seeking products that bring happiness, comfort and connection. That’s exactly what our industry delivers. We don’t just sell products; we help create special moments, thoughtful gestures and lasting memories.

With the final quarter approaching, now is the time to plan ahead and make the most of the opportunities available. For many retailers, the Christmas season remains the most important trading period of the year, and those who prepare early, secure the right product mix, and create inspiring displays will be best placed to succeed.

The opportunities are there. Consumers still want to celebrate, decorate, gift, and treat themselves. As we head towards the busiest part of the year, I believe there are plenty of reasons for retailers to feel positive about what lies ahead.

Diary of a gift shop

From aviation-inspired gifts and overflowing deliveries to trade show plans and training miles for charity fundraising, it’s been a busy few weeks for Sarah Halsall, owner of Hand Picked by Henrietta in the Cheshire town of Poynton

We’ve been turning our attention to men’s gifts - always the section I find most challenging! This year I’ve focused on RAF gifts from Widdop and Co. , and the choice feels very close to home.

Locally, there has always been a huge number of people connected to the aviation industry. The Woodford BAE site - a 500-acre military airfield and aircraft factory in Greater Manchester - was a hub of British aviation from the 1920s through to 2011, producing aircraft like the Avro Lancaster bomber, the Vulcan bomber, and the Nimrod.

Although the site has now closed, the Vulcan can still be admired at the Avro Heritage Museum in Stockport, and the spirit of the place very much lives on. With that in mind, I’ve selected pieces featuring the Vulcan bomber, the Red Arrows, and the Lancaster bomber.

Before the site closed, it hosted a brilliant annual air show. I have such fond memories of planes practising their routines on the Friday beforehand, flying low over the rooftops. A proper goosebumps moment.

Stock flow

Continuity of stock flow has been driving me slightly potty these last few weeks. It seems that a significant number of orders placed at Spring Fair have all decided to arrive at once - which has, in turn, put the brakes on any immediate reordering.

Our shop isn’t huge, and storage is limited, so several deliveries landing on the same day can be genuinely overwhelming. I find myself constantly chasing backorder arrival dates in an attempt to manage a more even

flow. Most of the time it’s achievable, but last week really did tip the balance. Work in progress, as they say!

Trade shows

Unfortunately I didn’t make it down to London for Progressive Greetings Live this year. I’ll admit I was more than a little envious scrolling through all the new greeting card launches on social media.

But I’ve already scheduled time to head to Harrogate for Home & Gift for two or three days, with two nights in the hotel booked. That should give me plenty of time to catch up with existing suppliers, hopefully spot a few exciting newcomers, and pick up some lovely add-ons to complement our greeting card offer - with one eye firmly on Christmas.

CardGains Charity Challenge

I was planning to take part in last month’s CardGains charity walk, but it was cancelled due to the heatwave - though that didn’t stop some brilliant souls who set off at 6am anyway to take on the challenge! Entitled “Many Miles, Many Smiles for Meningitis!”, this event brings together representatives and members from the greetings cards industry to raise funds and awareness for the Meningitis Research Foundation.

I’ll be completing the full course myself in a few weeks, and I’m delighted to say my sister has now joined me. Our personal fundraising has already passed £1,000, and the group effort across CardGains has smashed past £14,000. I’m absolutely over the moon, and I’ll share the final total next time.

Novelty meets nostalgia

Novelty and retro gifts continue to delight shoppers, combining nostalgic appeal with fresh design, collectability, and everyday usefulness

Novelty and nostalgia remain a winning combination, with consumers embracing gifts that blend playful design, familiar favourites and contemporary appeal. We asked suppliers for their thoughts…

How has this sector evolved in recent years?

Demi Pendakis, founder of FYG Home: Novelty gifting has evolved from short-lived, gimmick-led products into something more design-led, useful, and experience-based. Retailers still need products that create curiosity and conversation, but customers are much more conscious of quality, sustainability, and whether an item has longevity beyond the initial gift moment.

For FYG, that means creating products with a point of difference that still sit beautifully in the home. Candle Pearls are a good example: they feel new and surprising, but they offer genuine function, flexibility, and repeat use.

Julia Cash, creative director of Mad Beauty: Nostalgia remains one of the biggest drivers within licensed gifting, but it’s evolving. While consumers still love familiar characters and iconic brands, Gen Z and Gen Alpha are also seeking products that feel fresh, collectable, and worthy of sharing on social media. Innovation in packaging, formats, and product application has become just as important as the licence itself.

The return of beloved franchises through new film sequels, such as The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Toy Story 5, is also creating opportunities to engage both younger audiences and those who grew up with them. Alongside this, we’re seeing gifting expand beyond traditional occasions, with moments like Halloween, Back to School, and cosy movie marathon season becoming increasingly important retail opportunities.

Which gifts are proving most popular, and why?

Demi: Products that combine theatre, usefulness, and accessible price points are performing well. Customers respond to gifts that feel interactive or personal, but still premium enough to be kept and enjoyed.

For FYG, formats such as Candle Pearls, wax melts, mini

bath bombs, hand creams, and giftable fragrance rituals work well because they give shoppers an easy entry point into the brand. They are also simple for retailers to merchandise as add-ons, impulse gifts, or part of a wider wellbeing story.

Julia: The lip category continues to perform exceptionally well, particularly lip oils and nourishing balms, alongside body mists. Consumers are gravitating towards affordable beauty treats with playful, giftable packaging that they can collect and refresh regularly.

Within our own collections, our Disney Winnie the Poohinspired sleep range has been particularly successful. It taps into the growing wellness movement, offering thoughtful self-care products that elevate evening routines while combining nostalgia with practical everyday use.

Novelty gifting has evolved from short-lived, gimmickled products into something more design-led

What key trends are shaping the category?

Demi: The key trends are personalisation, sustainability, mood-led gifting, affordable luxury, and products that create a small ritual. Customers are drawn to gifts that feel thoughtful without being overly complicated.

There is also a strong nostalgia element, particularly in fragrance. Scents that evoke comfort, memory, seasonal moments, or familiar places create a powerful emotional response, making them very effective for gifting.

Julia: We’re seeing strong demand for products that offer added value through multi-functional design or collectable elements. Accessories paired with beauty products, such as lip balm keychains, reversible bags, and sleep masks, or gift sets with wearable items, continue to resonate with consumers.

Packaging is also playing a much bigger role in purchase decisions. Charms, tactile finishes, and keepsake designs that can be displayed or repurposed are proving increasingly popular. At the same time, pop culture continues to influence the category, from musical-inspired collections to cosy lifestyle themes that encourage selfcare and gifting.

Do you have any upcoming launches to share?

Demi: Yes. FYG Home is showcasing its new Signature Collection at Home & Gift on stand DP1-B32, featuring five perfumery-led fragrances across candles, diffusers, tin candles, and wax melt bars. The range includes “Your Signature Mark” labels inside candle and diffuser boxes, allowing customers to personalise the glass vessel.

We’re also presenting Candle Pearls, our reusable “Forever Candle” concept, as well as our Christmas Edit, which brings together nostalgic festive fragrances designed to capture seasonal moments.

Julia: We’re continuing to expand some of our strongest licensed collections, including new Harry Potter line extensions and our much-anticipated advent calendar. We’re also introducing new additions to our Gilmore Girls range, inspired by the ongoing popularity of cosy lifestyle trends, alongside our Disney Mickey Mouse Après Ski collection, featuring unique alpine-inspired packaging. Completing the line-up is our Disney Winnie the Pooh 100 collection, celebrating the beloved character with nostalgic, collectable packaging designed to become keepsakes as well as gifts.

The original icon comes full circle

As retro trends continue to shape consumer tastes, Ty is bringing its beloved plush collections together under one iconic name. The return of the original Beanie Babies banner celebrates the brand’s heritage while introducing a new generation to its enduring appeal

Fashion has a habit of circling back to the things we once thought we had outgrown. Vinyl records, instant cameras, vintage trainers, and classic denim have all returned with fresh relevance - not because they are old, but because they feel authentic.

The same can be said of Ty Beanies. Their original form, once a defining collectable of the 1990s, may now be described as retro, but retro has never been more in vogue.

When Ty introduced Beanie Babies in the early 1990s, the idea was simple yet distinctive: small, characterful plush animals, softly filled with beans, each with its own name, birthday and personality. That combination of collectability, charm and a ordability helped create one of the most recognisable toy phenomena of its generation. The heart-shaped tag became more than packaging; it became a badge of belonging for children, collectors and gift-givers alike.

Today, the appeal of the original Beanie format feels surprisingly modern. Consumers are increasingly drawn to products with heritage, story, and emotional value. In a fast-moving world of digital trends and disposable novelty, Beanies o er something tactile, familiar, and reassuring. They are easy to hold, easy to display, and easy to love. Their simplicity is not dated; it is part of their strength.

That is why Ty’s decision to bring the popular Beanie Boos and Beanie Bellies together under the single, original Beanie Babies banner feels less like a rebrand and more like a homecoming.

Beanie Boos, with their sparkling eyes and expressive faces, and Beanie Bellies, with their soft, rounded forms and contemporary character design, have each built loyal followings. Yet both lines share the same DNA as the originals: collectable characters, emotional connection and the unmistakable Ty personality.

Unifying them as Beanie Babies gives the range a clearer, stronger identity. It reminds shoppers that these much-loved characters are not separate from Ty’s heritage; they are the next chapter of it. The move also speaks to today’s retail landscape, where clarity matters. Parents, children and collectors instantly recognise the Beanie Babies name. It carries nostalgia for one generation and discovery for another.

There is also a cultural timeliness to the transition. The 1990s are influencing fashion, music, interiors and gifting, and the original Beanie silhouette fits neatly into that mood. But Ty is not simply looking backwards. By placing Beanie Boos and Beanie Bellies beneath the Beanie Babies banner, the brand is honouring its roots while giving modern plush fans a more cohesive world to explore.

Great icons endure because they can evolve without losing what made them special. Beanie Babies were never just toys; they were companions, collectables and tiny expressions of personality. As Ty brings its beloved Beanie families together, it is proving that the original idea still has plenty of life, relevance, and charm. Retro? Certainly. Out of fashion? Not for a moment.

When the weather won’t play ball

With

Retail100 Consulting director

Iunpredictable weather disrupting footfall, stock planning, and seasonal sales,

and co-founder Neil Amer explores how retailers can navigate a stop-start summer and prepare for a successful autumn/winter season

f there’s one thing British retailers can usually rely on, it’s that summer will follow some kind of predictable rhythm. Not this year. July is upon us, and yet the season has felt like a patchwork of false starts: bursts of heat followed by days of drizzle, then a cold snap, humidity, and wind. It’s been the kind of stop-start summer that keeps shoppers guessing - and keeps retailers on their toes.

For small independents and emerging suppliers, this unpredictability has real consequences. Weather doesn’t just influence what sells; it influences whether people come out at all. Footfall patterns across the UK have mirrored the skies: up one week, down the next, with no clear trend to anchor planning or forecasting. And when the weather behaves like this, it’s not just the classic seasonal categories that feel the strain. It’s retail in general.

Outdoor living, garden décor, alfresco dining, outdoor toys and games - these categories depend on momentum. They need a run of warm days to build confidence and trigger those “let’s refresh the garden” or “let’s get the kids outside” purchases.

This year, that momentum has been hard to find. Retailers I’ve spoken to describe the same pattern: strong spikes on the warm weekends, followed by long lulls when the temperature drops. It’s made stock flow harder to manage and sell-through increasingly uneven.

Some stores are sitting on more summer inventory than they’d like; others have pockets of sell-outs because they bought cautiously and then got caught out by a sudden sunny spell.

But the impact goes beyond seasonal categories. When the weather is unsettled, browsing behaviour changes. People stay at home. They

delay discretionary purchases. They’re less inclined to wander into town or pop into their favourite independent. Even gifting - usually more resilientcan soften when footfall does. It’s a reminder that while we often talk about weather as a factor in seasonal trading, it’s actually a factor in all trading.

The good news is that July is a natural pivot point. Even in a “normal” year, this is when retailers start thinking about clearing through summer stock and preparing the shop for the first hints of autumn. This year, that transition becomes even more important. If you’re carrying more summer inventory than planned, now is the moment to be proactive rather than reactive.

A few practical moves I’m seeing work well include curated bundles that lift basket size, micro-promotions that don’t devalue the brand but help nudge sell-through, re-merchandising to keep summer visible but not dominant, and dual-season storytelling - “Summer Days, Cosy Nights” - to bridge the gap. The aim isn’t to panic-clear, but to create spacephysically and mentally - for the newness that will define the next trading cycle.

This is why the timing of Home & Gift couldn’t be better. As this issue lands, retailers and suppliers are heading to one of the most important buying events of the year. Harrogate has always been a show that blends inspiration with practicality, and this year that balance feels especially valuable.

With the summer so unsettled, many retailers will be looking for reassurance: categories that feel dependable, trends that have longevity, and products that can anchor their A/W assortment with confidence.

And the good news is that the outlook for A/W26 trends is encouraging. Over the past 12 months, I’ve been consulting for a national toy retailer, and one thing is abundantly clear: plush is having a moment. Not just in toys, but across gifting more broadly. Soft, tactile, comforting products are resonating with consumers of all ages. From character-led plush to elevated lifestyle plush, the category is expanding and premiumising.

Alongside plush, collectibles continue to surge - fuelled by social

media, fandom culture, and the desire for small, a ordable treats. For independents, collectibles o er repeat visits, strong margins, and a reason for customers to keep coming back.

Then there’s novelty and retrotwo themes that feel tailor-made for the current mood. Retro gifts tap into nostalgia and emotional connection, while novelty brings humour and lightness at a time when consumers are craving small moments of joy.

Yes, the weather has been unpredictable. Yes, it has made summer trading more challenging than usual. But retailers are nothing if not resilient. The key now is to use July as a reset: clear what you need to clear, lean into the categories that are working, and go into Harrogate with a clear sense of what your A/W assortment needs to deliver.

If this summer has taught us anything, it’s that agility wins. And the independents who thrive will be the ones who adapt quickly, buy smartly, and build ranges that feel emotionally resonant - whatever the weather decides to do next.

Inis: capturing the

For more than two decades, Inis has captured something truly special. More than a fragrance, more than a collection of beautifully crafted products, Inis has become a feeling - a reminder of invigorating coastal walks, sparkling seas, fresh ocean air, and the simple joy that comes from connecting with nature

Inspired by the wild beauty of the Irish coastline, Inis has built a loyal following around the world by bottling the uplifting energy of the sea. Its signature scent has become synonymous with freshness, positivity, and escape, transporting customers to their favourite seaside moments with just one spray.

Today, that same spirit continues to inspire innovation across the brand, leading to the introduction of an exciting new category for Inis: haircare. Launching this season, the new Inis Haircare Collection represents a natural evolution for the brand, extending the beloved Energy of the Sea experience into an everyday haircare ritual.

Designed to complement the existing bath, body, and fragrance ranges, the collection combines e ective performance with nourishing ingredients inspired by the ocean, delivering healthy-looking hair infused with the unmistakable freshness of Inis.

A brand inspired by the coast

The story of Inis begins with the sea. Ireland’s coastline stretches for thousands of kilometres, encompassing rugged cli s, hidden coves, sandy beaches, and powerful Atlantic waves. These coastal landscapes have long served as inspiration for the creators behind Inis, shaping a brand identity rooted in freedom, vitality, and connection to nature.

Unlike many fragrances that focus on floral bouquets or rich oriental notes, Inis set out to capture something more elemental: the feeling of standing by the ocean. The result is a scent that is clean, uplifting, and instantly recognisable, evoking sunshine on the water, fresh sea breezes, and endless horizons.

That emotional connection has always been at the heart of the brand’s success. Customers don’t simply wear Inis - they associate it with memories, travel, wellbeing, and happiness. As consumer interest continues to grow in products that deliver both sensory pleasure and everyday functionality, expanding into haircare was a natural next step.

Bringing the energy of the sea to haircare

Hair is one of the most personal aspects of a beauty routine. The products we choose not only a ect how our hair looks and feels, but also influence how we feel about ourselves throughout the day.

With this in mind, the Inis Haircare Collection was carefully developed to bring together performance, nourishment and sensory enjoyment. Inspired by the freshness and vitality of the sea, the collection is designed to leave hair looking healthy, vibrant, and full of shine, while surrounding the wearer with the sparkling scent of Inis.

The range features lightweight formulations that deliver effective results without heaviness, making the products suitable for a wide variety of hair types and daily routines. Importantly, the collection is both sulphate-free and silicone-free, reflecting growing consumer demand for gentler, more mindful haircare solutions.

By combining ocean-inspired ingredients with proven haircare actives, Inis has created a range that feels modern, accessible, and distinctly aligned with the brand’s heritage.

The foundation of healthy hair: Inis Shampoo

Every e ective haircare routine begins with cleansing, and the Inis Shampoo has been developed to provide exactly that - clean, refreshed hair without compromising moisture.

Traditional shampoos can sometimes strip away natural oils, leaving hair feeling dry or unbalanced. The sulphate-free formula used in the Inis Shampoo helps avoid this by gently removing build-up while supporting the hair’s natural moisture levels.

At the heart of the formula is a carefully selected blend of nourishing ingredients. Shea butter helps condition and soften the hair, while jojoba oil contributes lightweight moisture and smoothness. Argan oil, often referred to as “liquid gold” in the beauty world, helps support shine and manageability. Seaweed extracts, inspired by the ocean environment that defines the Inis brand, provide additional nourishment and help leave hair looking revitalised.

The result is hair that feels clean, refreshed, and healthy, with a natural shine and movement that reflects the vitality of the sea itself.

Deep nourishment with Inis Conditioner

Following cleansing, hydration becomes the next essential step in maintaining healthy-looking hair. The Inis Conditioner has been formulated to provide deep nourishment while remaining lightweight and easy to use. Rather than coating the hair with heavy silicones, the formula focuses on ingredients that help support softness, hydration and shine naturally.

Shea butter and sea minerals help smooth and condition the hair, while nutrient-rich seaweed extracts contribute valuable moisture and nourishment. One of the collection’s standout ingredients is hyaluronic acid, widely recognised for its impressive moisture-binding properties. Combined with antioxidant-rich Vitamin E, it helps support hydration while enhancing the appearance of healthy, glossy hair.

Jojoba oil and botanical moisturisers further contribute to softness and manageability, helping hair feel silky and refreshed without becoming weighed down. The result is a conditioner that leaves hair feeling touchably soft, looking vibrant, and carrying the fresh, sparkling scent that Inis’ customers know and love.

Energy of the Sea

Effortless coastal style with Sea Salt Spray

No seaside-inspired collection would be complete without a styling product that captures the relaxed beauty of ocean-kissed hair.

The Inis Sea Salt Spray has been created to deliver effortless beachy texture, helping users achieve naturallooking waves and volume without stiffness or crunch.

Sea salt provides texture and body, creating that coveted windswept finish associated with days spent by the coast. However, unlike many traditional sea salt sprays that can leave hair feeling dry, the Inis formula includes a range of hydrating and conditioning ingredients.

Hyaluronic acid helps maintain moisture levels, while Vitamin B5 contributes softness and flexibility. Seaweed extracts continue the collection’s oceaninspired story while supporting hair’s overall appearance and condition.

The result is a styling product that enhances texture while helping hair remain soft, healthy-looking and touchable. Finished with the uplifting scent of Inis, it offers an instant reminder of fresh sea air and coastal adventures.

Meeting modern consumer expectations

Today’s beauty consumer is more informed than ever before. Customers are increasingly seeking products that combine efficacy, transparency, and enjoyable sensory experiences. They want formulations that perform well, while also aligning with their personal values and lifestyle preferences.

The Inis Haircare Collection responds directly to these expectations. The sulphate-free and siliconefree approach reflects growing interest in gentler cleansing and lightweight conditioning. The inclusion of ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, Vitamin E, seaweed extracts, shea butter, and botanical oils speaks to consumer demand for recognisable, beneficial ingredients.

At the same time, the collection remains approachable and easy to understand, avoiding unnecessary complexity while delivering meaningful benefits. This balance between simplicity and performance is likely to resonate strongly with both existing Inis customers and those discovering the brand for the first time.

A natural extension of the Inis story

One of the strengths of the Inis brand has always been its consistency. Every product, whether fragrance, body care, or home fragrance, contributes to the same overarching experience: bringing the uplifting feeling of the sea into everyday life.

The Haircare Collection builds seamlessly upon this foundation. Rather than introducing a completely new direction, the range extends the familiar Inis experience into another important category, allowing customers to enjoy the scent and spirit of the brand throughout their daily routine.

For retailers, this creates exciting opportunities for cross-category merchandising and storytelling. Customers already loyal to the fragrance or body care collections are naturally drawn to products that allow them to continue that sensory experience. The haircare range therefore serves as both a standalone offering and a complementary addition to the broader Inis portfolio.

Looking ahead

As Inis continues to evolve, its core mission remains unchanged: to share the uplifting energy of the sea with customers around the world. The launch of the new Haircare Collection marks an exciting chapter in that journey, demonstrating how a beloved fragrance brand can successfully expand while remaining true to its roots.

Combining ocean-inspired ingredients, modern formulations and the unmistakable freshness of the Inis scent, the collection delivers a complete haircare experience that feels both contemporary and authentically connected to the brand’s heritage.

Refreshing, nourishing, and beautifully fragranced, the new Inis Haircare Collection invites customers to experience the sea in a whole new way. From cleansing and conditioning to effortless styling, every product is designed to bring a little more vitality, shine, and coastal freshness into everyday life - capturing, once again, the enduring magic of the Energy of the Sea.

Curtain up!

With the countdown to peak retail season underway, all eyes turn to the industry’s favourite summer gathering. Harrogate Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival 2026 brings together the best in gifting and homewares, giving buyers the first look at new collections, fresh inspiration, and the products set to shape the months ahead

Year after year, Harrogate Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival earns its place as one of the most anticipated events in the retail calendar. More than a buying platform, it’s where new products are launched, business relationships flourish, and the industry comes together in a setting that’s become synonymous with summer.

Ask anyone who has exhibited or visited over the years and they’ll almost certainly have a story to tell - whether it’s a breakthrough order, a chance meeting that led to a lasting partnership, or simply a favourite Harrogate moment. So, to celebrate everything that makes the show unique, we asked exhibitors to share their favourite Home & Gift memory or success story. Here’s what they had to say…

Simon Carswell, UK sales manager of Alice Wheeler London: My favourite memery is our very first Alice Wheeler launch. It was a tiny capsule collection of teal and mustard beauty and fashion designs. It was a “let’s see how it goes” presentation, which has become the success story of who we are today.

What: Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival

Where: Harrogate Convention Centre, Harrogate, North Yorkshire

When: July 19-22

Visit: https://homeandgift.co.uk/

Hannah Jenkins, director UK & Ireland of Cereria Mollá 1899: Without question, our favourite memory is our very first show last year. As a new exhibitor, we didn’t know quite what to expect, but the response was incredible. We met retailers who have since become valued partners, opened new accounts across the UK, and received overwhelmingly positive feedback about the brand. It played a significant role in accelerating our UK growth and helped establish Cereria Mollá 1899 within the premium home fragrance market.

Stacey McNeill, creative director of Fox Under The Moon : My favourite memory is from our very first Home & Gift in 2023. I remember wandering past the Joe Davies stand thinking, “I’d love Fox Under The Moon to be part of something like that one day.” To now have a wonderful licensing partnership with Joe Davies feels incredibly special, and a real full-circle moment for the brand.

Elaine Nolan, sales and business development manager UK, Australia and Europe, of Inis the Energy of the Sea: For me, Home & Gift has a bit of a festival feel - full of colour, food, the clinking of glasses, music, and plenty of laughter. What more could anyone want? It doesn’t feel like work at all!

Paul Hooker, managing director of Joe Davies: There are lots of fond memories, but for me it’s always about the atmosphere and the people. That’s what makes Harrogate special. It’s one of the few events where customers, suppliers, and colleagues all seem to have the time to stop, chat, and enjoy the occasion. This year could be extra special too, with the FIFA World Cup Final taking place on the Sunday evening. Who knows, we might even find ourselves cheering on a home nation!

Sarah Watmore, owner of Miss Milly: I’ve been exhibiting at Home & Gift since 2006, starting in the basement before moving to the upstairs jewellery hall,

then into Design Point 1 and now Design Point 3. My memories are a collage of lovely people and spontaneous fun, with the odd Bettys Café Tea Rooms indulgence thrown in. Home & Gift never fails to be a successful and enjoyable event, and the general vibe is a huge part of that.

Mark Jones, sales director of University Games and Lagoon: It was late on the final day of the show one year; most people had already headed home, convinced there was no more business to be had, but I was still on the standmainly because I had no friends to go out with!

A lone buyer was making her weary way up the aisle, and being the funny and engaging person I am, I managed to flag her down. It turned out she was the buyer for a small toy shop in London called Hamleys - and from that meeting we went on to enjoy many years of successful trading together. So the moral of the story is that your next great opportunity might be the very last person walking down the aisle - so don’t pack up too early!

Kate Taplin, south west area sales manager of Wild Things: We have so many to choose from, but here’s one involving a fellow exhibitor. One year, our show neighbour was having a terrible time and hadn’t taken a single order. As the days went on, I could see his face becoming more downcast. My heart really went out to him.

Then, just 10 minutes before the show closed, a buyer from Harrods who must have been wandering round incognito appeared and ordered just about everything on his stand. As you can imagine, the look on his face changed rather dramatically! It was a great end to the show and a lovely reminder that things can turn around in an instant. Donny Carstairs, owner of Selbrae House: Last year I brought my son and his friend along. We were positioned next to Gift Republic, who were demonstrating a stacking cup game on their stand. The boys became completely obsessed with it and spent about 90% of the show trying to beat each other’s times. They got so competitive that

the Gift Republic team actively encouraged them to stay because they were drawing a crowd and attracting customers to the stand! It perfectly sums up what makes Home & Gift special - it’s a relaxed, friendly show where business gets done, but people also have fun.

Helen Cottrill, business development director UK and USA of Figured’Art: I have so many wonderful memories of Home & Gift after exhibiting there for decades with Enesco. This year feels particularly special as I will be creating new memories with Figured’Art, and my daughter Isla will be joining me on the stand. Having grown up surrounded by the gift industry, she knows the business well, and I’m incredibly proud that this will be her first Home & Gift as an exhibitor. I’m looking forward to sharing the experience with her and introducing her to an industry that has been such a big part of my life.

For Selbrae House, Home & Gift will be the first opportunity for many customers to see its new countertop coaster display stand. To support the launch, it will be offering complimentary stands on qualifying coaster orders placed at the show.

To encourage retailers to trial the range, Figured’Art is offering a 5% discount on all orders over £250. Orders at this level also qualify for free delivery.

Peter Rabbit hops to Harrogate

Exactly 160 years ago this month, author and illustrator Beatrix Potter was born. Museums & Galleries is celebrating the occasion and honouring her legacy with a collection of Peter Rabbit gift products launching exclusively at Home & Gift

Beatrix Potter was born in London in 1866, but her heart always lay in the Lake District. The author and illustrator first holidayed in Cumbria with her parents, at the age of 16.

Following the success of her early books, Beatrix didn’t just move to the Lakes: she bought up great swathes of it to protect the land as well as the traditional ways of life still practised there. When she died in 1943, she left 4,000 acres and 15 farms to the National Trust.

Few characters in literature have enchanted quite so many generations as those dreamt up by Beatrix Potter. Born from a deep love of the British countryside, her stories are defined by a blend of distinctive characters and dreamy watercolours.

To mark her 160th anniversary, Museums & Galleries (M&G) has invited Peter Rabbit and his friends to decorate a collection of gift items, uniting her legacy of illustration with M&G’s enduring aim of creating beautifully designed, high-quality home and gift items at attractive prices.

A visionary illustrator, pioneering scientist, and dedicated conservationist, Beatrix was far more than just a storyteller.

But for many of us, our first introduction to her world was through a little rabbit in a blue jacket.

The story of the world’s most famous rabbit actually began as a letter to a sick child. In 1893, Beatrix Potter wrote to Noel Moore, the young son of her former governess, who was housebound. Lacking news, she wrote: “I don’t know what to write to you, so I shall tell you a story about four little rabbits whose names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail, and Peter”.

Her words were accompanied by charming sketches inspired by her own real-life pet rabbit, Peter Piper. That act of kindness to a child developed into a book in 1901, forever changing children’s literature and giving us the charming, blue-jacketed hero known worldwide today.

M&G is launching two collections of Beatrix Potter gift packaging products, for everyday and Christmas: sheet and roll wrap, gift tissue packs, and two sizes each of gift bags. There is a large theme pack of 16 notecards and envelopes, and a smaller pack of eight thank you cards and envelopes.

A luxury A5 notebook will inspire the user’s dreams and creativity, or customers can simply decorate their space with a

magnetic notepad. An organic cotton pencil case will keep pens and pencils tidy.

There is also a stylish organic cotton tote bag, a fine bone china mug with a keepsake gift box, a set of cork-backed coasters, four bookmarks, a 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle, and a pack of playing cards.

The company is marking its return to Home & Gift with an abundance of gorgeous new products and extensions to existing ranges. There are two new kitchen textile ranges by William Morris from the V&A (Willow Bough and Kilburn); five new coaster set packs and two new placemat sets; new winter-themed single tea towels; a new range of gift wrap from M&G’s The Fold label; and a co-ordinated gift collection featuring Josie Shenoy’s decorative London Map - a big favourite with M&G customers since the initial card design was released earlier this year.

The new collection, entitled London Landmarks, includes a fine bone china mug, a PLA mug, an insulated metal bottle, a cork-backed coaster set, an organic cotton tea towel set, a playing cards pack, a magnetic notepad, and an A5 journal.

Wild Things celebrates Swarovski®

Wild Things welcomes the return of Swarovski® branding, celebrating a relationship built on quality and craftsmanship

When was the last time receiving a gift presented you with a moment of genuine connection? From its design-led studio in Devon, Wild Things develops every item with that experience in mind.

Whether it’s a thoughtful keepsake for a friend, a sparkling reminder of a beloved pet, or an inspirational sentiment for everyday living, each piece is created to become a lasting memory rather than a passing present.

And now, following structural changes at Swarovski® HQ, Wild Things can once again celebrate its use of the world-renowned crystals. “Our history with Swarovski® goes back decades,” explains Wild Things founder and designer Jules Vahrman.

“We’re committed to using the highest quality components in our products so that they can be treasured; after all, the best gifts are the ones that keep bringing joy long after the occasion has passed.

“The Swarovski® branding gives consumers confidence that they are buying quality and tells the recipient just how much they mean to the person giving the gift. We’re thrilled that Swarovski® has reopened its lighting division and is once again working alongside trusted partners, allowing us to promote our use of these beautiful crystals.”

The return of Swarovski® branding is perfectly timed for Home & Gift, where visitors will be able to see Wild Things’ Crystal Radiance range of

Swarovski®-adorned suncatchers in person. With 12 beautiful designs, complete with gift boxes and various display options, this collection is set to be a showstopper.

Alongside this collection is a range of 12 birthstone angel designs. Each one adorned with five beautiful heart-shaped crystals, and the use of birthstone colours adds an extra touch of personalisation that customers adore.

Also featuring Swarovski® crystals are angel pins, now available with an attractive bamboo display. Designed using birthstone colours, these pins are proving extremely popular.

This year, the Wild Things’ goodie bag will be its best ever, including free samples of pins and bookmarks, o ering buyers the perfect opportunity to discover even more of the brand’s bestselling designs.

And with more exciting Swarovski® ranges in development, this marks an exciting new chapter for a brand that has always believed that the most memorable gifts are the ones that sparkle with meaning.

Group creative director Ben Dorney describes the To Be Frank! ethos as “a mix of witty one-liners and funny deadpan delivery, all presented in a palette of secretly blended neon colours. It’s the last word in colourful humour!”

The ‘secretly blended’ reference relates to the neon inks being custom-made for M!NT - described as groundbreaking for the industry - with the company also working to achieve colour matches across di erent product substrates and manufacturers.

The products are well suited to personal gifting or stocking fillers and focus on popular formats. These include magnets, keyrings, large, medium and bottle gift bags, A5 textured-cover notebooks with soft-touch lamination, special inks and embossing (160pp lined paper), magnetic pads, bookmarks, and coasters (single designs, sold in units of six).

M!NT and its proprietors, Debbie and Alan Williams, are celebrating two decades of greeting card and stationery publishing this summer. Twenty years ago, the couple took over a struggling, little-known card company and have since transformed it into the major independent business it is today.

An early success was the now-classic Knit & Purl greeting card range, featuring quirky animals and objects hand-knitted by Debbie. What began as a temporary accounts role at a small greeting card company ultimately led to Debbie and her then farmer husband, Alan, buying and relaunching the business, which now occupies a 43,000sq ft premises and is one of the UK’s leading

independently owned greeting card, stationery and gift publishing groups.

M!NT’s early successes rapidly led to the acquisition of Museums & Galleries (M&G), Real and Exciting Designs, and the launch last year of The Fold, M&G’s boutique side label. Meanwhile, M!NT has not rested on its laurels. Ben Dorney has reinvigorated the brand, creating its new identity, and developing the To Be Frank! collection of cards, stationery and gifts.

M&G relationships and administration manager Sophie Bylina-Williams explains: “A team e ort created the magicprinter and production team pushing technical boundaries; studio design and copywriting in collaboration with an industry wordsmith - and the result is a unique look and tone of voice.”

The constantly refreshed Knit & Purl range remains a core part of the M!NT offer and, together with the contemporary success of To Be Frank!, strengthens the company’s position as a leading humour publisher. This is further supported by a reinvigorated collection of licensed ranges including Katie Abey and Magdalena Creative, alongside popular in-house ranges such as Doodle Showcase and Just Saying.

Reflecting on 20 successful years in the industry, Debbie says: “We just feel so proud of our team and how they have adapted to the evolution of the business and our retail customers, both multiples and independents. We wouldn’t be where we are today without them.”

Candlelight unveils

Candlelight Products is set to make a major statement at Home & Gift, as the company o cially showcases its highly anticipated Spring/Summer 2027 collection. Head of Sales Kate Winch tells us more…

Building on the momentum generated by a successful soft launch at the Business Design Centre in London last month, Candlelight will present 10 completely new ranges at Home & Gift, spanning home fragrance, homeware, outdoor living, lighting, fabrics and soft furnishings.

The collection represents one of the company’s most comprehensive and strategically important launches to date, with orders now being taken for January delivery.

The London showroom preview generated an overwhelmingly positive response from customers, with buyers praising the fresh direction, commercial appeal, and breadth of the new collections. The feedback has reinforced Candlelight’s confidence ahead of Harrogate, where the wider industry will have the opportunity to experience the full Spring/Summer 2027 launch.

Our vision is clear. We see a significant opportunity within the market over the next five years

A key feature of the new collection is Candlelight’s evolving approach to trend and product development. While remaining true to its core strengths in home décor and fragrance, the business has significantly expanded its outdoor o ering to better support the changing requirements of garden centres and lifestyle retailers.

“We have taken a very considered approach to S/S27,” explains Head of Brand Tommy Bartles. “Consumer lifestyles continue to evolve, and outdoor living remains one of the strongest growth areas within the home sector. Garden centres have become increasingly important destinations for home and gifting purchases, and we wanted to create collections that support their growth while remaining true to our design-led philosophy.”

The enhanced outdoor category introduces a range of products designed to seamlessly bridge indoor and outdoor living, reflecting current consumer demand for

versatile spaces that can be enjoyed throughout the year. These collections sit alongside an expanded selection of home fragrance, decorative accessories, lighting, and textiles, offering retailers a complete merchandising solution across multiple departments.

The launch also reflects Candlelight’s ongoing investment in product design, sourcing, and innovation. The company’s in-house teams have worked extensively to develop collections that combine strong visual appeal with commercial viability, ensuring products resonate with both independent retailers and larger multi-site operators.

As the market continues to evolve, Candlelight believes the opportunity for growth has never been greater. The business has observed a gradual reduction in competition across several home and gift categories as market conditions continue to challenge less established operators.

This changing landscape has strengthened Candlelight’s long-term ambitions. With significant investment in product development, customer support, merchandising solutions, and showroom facilities, the company has positioned itself to become one of the leading forces within the UK home and gift sector.

Head of Sales Kate Winch says: “Our vision is clear. We see a significant opportunity within the market over the next five years. As some competitors reduce their presence or exit categories altogether, we are here to stay and are continuing to invest, innovate, and expand. We have the infrastructure, the product development capability, and the customer relationships required to support sustained growth.”

Visitors to Home & Gift will be able to explore the complete Spring/Summer 2027 collection, meet the Candlelight team, and discuss opportunities for the upcoming season. With 10 new ranges, an expanded outdoor strategy, and a strong pipeline of future developments, the company is entering the next chapter of its growth journey with confidence.

Retailers looking to secure early availability are encouraged to place orders at the show, with January delivery slots now available across the S/S27 collection. For Candlelight, Home & Gift is more than just a product launch - it is a clear statement of intent for the future.

Something new is taking shape... Edge Sculpture

Edge Sculpture creative director Matt Buckley (pictured) says: “It’s been 10 years since we last attended Home & Gift, yet the memories we have are certainly among our absolute favourites.

“With this in mind, we felt that it was now time for us to once again head north with Edge Sculpture and not only meet up with our wonderful existing stockists but also meet new customers and contacts, who have also travelled to this part of the UK to enjoy this fantastically lively summer trade fair.

“We’re extremely excited to announce that we will also be launching a brand-new Edge Sculpture piece at the show, revealing it for the very first time on Sunday July 19,

30 years of fragrance,

Managing director Vanessa Curry reflects on the people, products and principles behind home fragrance brand Best Kept Secrets’ enduring success, as the business celebrates three decades of gifting

Few gift brands can claim to have remained relevant for three decades, but Best Kept Secrets has never stood still. As consumer tastes have evolved and home fragrance has become one of the gifting sector’s most dynamic categories, the Northumberland-based business has continually reinvented its collections, embraced emerging trends, and strengthened its retail presence while staying true to the quality and craftsmanship that first made it successful.

Today, managing director Vanessa Curry and her husband Paul are leading the next generation of the family business, building on a proud heritage while steering the brand towards new opportunities.

From bestselling gifting collections and trendled fragrance launches to sustainable product development and expanding retail partnerships, Best Kept Secrets continues to evolve in line with the needs of both consumers and retailers.

Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, the company is not only reflecting on its journey so far but also looking ahead to an exciting future filled with innovation, growth, and fresh opportunities.

From candle maker to home fragrance brand

Founded in June 1996, Best Kept Secrets has grown from a small British candle company into a recognised home fragrance and gifting brand stocked by independent retailers across the UK.

The business has expanded significantly over the years, with a product portfolio that now includes candles, wax melts, reed di users, and gift collections designed for

every occasion. Yet despite that growth, manufacturing remains firmly rooted in Morpeth, where products are still hand-made and hand-finished with the care, craftsmanship, and attention to detail that have become synonymous with the brand.

A commitment to quality, strong retailer relationships and an ability to anticipate consumer trends have helped Best Kept Secrets build a loyal customer following and maintain its position within an increasingly competitive market.

For Vanessa, the people behind the products are just as important as the products themselves. “We have the most wonderful team,” she says. “They’re hardworking, dedicated, incredibly talented, and always know how to make each other laugh. Best Kept Secrets has always had a strong family focus and that’s something we’re determined to protect as we continue to grow. The passion and commitment our team brings every day is what allows us to keep innovating while staying true to who we are.”

Creating gifts that mean something

For 30 years, Best Kept Secrets has focused on creating products that make people smile. Whether it’s a beautifully fragranced candle, a thoughtful gift set, or the brand’s instantly recognisable sparkle, every product is designed to create moments of happiness.

The bestselling ‘Just Because’ Collection perfectly captures the brand’s understanding of modern gifting. Created to help customers celebrate friendships, milestones, acts of kindness, and everyday moments, the collection has become a year-round bestseller for retailers.

Managing director Vanessa Curry

family & feel-good gifting

Its success reflects a simple truth: the most meaningful gifts are often given for no reason at all.

Alongside established bestsellers, this month sees the launch of The Secret Collection: a sophisticated range inspired by familiar luxury fragrances. Created around the emotional connection between scent, memory, and wellbeing, the collection represents a new chapter for the brand and reflects growing consumer demand for premium fragrance experiences at sensible prices for the home. With trend-led collections and innovative launches, Best Kept Secrets continues to evolve with changing consumer expectations. Recyclable FSC-registered packaging, vegan-friendly products, and biodegradable sparkle demonstrate a commitment to sustainability without compromising on quality, fragrance performance, or gifting appeal.

Looking back - and forward

The biggest change Best Kept Secrets has witnessed over the last three decades is the role fragrance now plays in everyday life. Once considered an occasional luxury, home fragrance has become an important part of how consumers create atmosphere, express personality, and transform their living spaces.

This shift has created new opportunities for gifting brands. Consumers are increasingly looking for products that feel personal, thoughtful, and emotionally drivenan area where fragrance excels. From everyday gifting through the bestselling Just Because Collection to wellness-inspired ranges such as Natural Harmony and the launch of The Secret Collection, Best Kept Secrets has continued to respond to changing consumer expectations while maintaining the quality and accessibility that retailers value.

This anniversary year marks the beginning of an ambitious new phase. The business is continuing to expand its reach across the UK through a growing network of sales agents, helping to introduce the brand to new retailers and markets.

Alongside this, several partnerships are currently in development, reinforcing Best Kept Secrets’ ambition to build on its success and create new opportunities for growth. These collaborations, together with ongoing product innovation and investment in the brand, form part of a clear vision for the future under Vanessa’s leadership.

As the next generation leading the business, I’m excited to propel Best Kept Secrets into its next chapter

“Reaching our 30th anniversary is a huge milestone and a testament to the support of our customers, retail partners, and dedicated team,” says Vanessa. “As the next generation leading the business, I’m excited to propel Best Kept Secrets into its next chapter through innovation, sustainable development, and trend-led product launches, while preserving the quality, creativity, British manufacturing heritage and, of course, our signature sparkle that our customers know and love.”

As Best Kept Secrets enters its fourth decade, Vanessa and the team remain focused on the same goal that has driven the business for 30 years: creating beautifully fragranced products that bring joy to people’s homes and help retailers build meaningful connections with their customers. Thirty years on, the future is looking brighterand more sparkly - than ever.

Playful charm

Le Toy Van

Inspired by Britain’s rich motoring heritage, Le Toy Van’s new GT Series is a beautifully crafted wooden car collection designed for little racers, grown-up car lovers, and collectors alike.

Founded in 1995 by Georges Le Van and now led by second-generation family member and managing director Steven Le Van, the Hampton Court-based family business is known worldwide for its sustainable wooden toys, sold in more than 100 countries.

The GT Series marks an exciting new chapter for the brand, blending nostalgic automotive design, imaginative play, and collectible craftsmanship. Made using responsibly sourced FSC-certified beechwood and birchwood, each car celebrates iconic motoring style with playful charm and display-worthy appeal.

While children will love zooming them around, grown-up fans and self-confessed kidults may find themselves collecting them too. Adding to the excitement, the range includes a mystery car, giving collectors an extra thrill as they complete the set.

The collection has already gained recognition, having been shortlisted for a Junior

Design Award, recognising the range’s standout design and play value. Inspired by Surrey’s rich automotive legacy, the GT Series reflects Le Toy Van’s commitment to thoughtful craftsmanship, sustainable materials, and toys made to be treasured for generations.

Steven says: “Cars spark imagination at any age. We wanted to create something children would love to play with, but that grown-up car fans would genuinely want to collect too. Having them made here in England makes the collection even more special to us.”

Like all Le Toy Van products, the GT Series features plastic-free, recyclable packaging and water-based, child-safe paints, combining sustainability with timeless design for children, collectors, and anyone who still gets excited by a classic motor. Visit the Le Toy Van stand to see the full collection.

The plush hour

The plush category continues to perform strongly, fuelled by character appeal, collectability, and demand from consumers of all ages. We asked two leading suppliers to share their perspectives on current trends shaping the market and what retailers should be watching over the coming months…

Plush remains one of the gift industry’s most resilient categories, with licensed favourites, innovative new concepts, and eco-conscious collections helping to maintain strong sales.

Lauren Parr, online sales, design and marketing at Keel Toys, and Zara Grindrod, brands, international & new business director of Rainbow Designs, share their views on the sector and how they’re responding to its evolving demands.

What’s driving growth in the plush category right now?

Lauren: The increase in kidult consumers has been a huge factor in the increased purchase of soft toys. Kidults are reconnecting with plush as a source of comfort and escapism as they navigate an ever-changing world.

Zara: Plush continues to thrive because it o ers something truly timeless - comfort, companionship, and emotional connection. We’re seeing strong demand for products that combine collectability with character appeal, alongside a growing appetite for gifting occasions across all ages.

Parents and gift-givers are increasingly looking for highquality, meaningful toys that bring favourite characters to life, and character-led plush, with strong storytelling and heritage, remains a particularly powerful driver of growth in the category, demonstrated by the success of our Classic Paddington, Signature Peter Rabbit, and Disney Hundred Acre Wood collections.

Which of your new launches are you most excited about?

Lauren: We’re thrilled to announce that the Keeleco Enchanted World collection has o cially started to hit stores. This range has been so greatly anticipated that there are already plans to extend the line. We love the Enchanted World characters and cannot wait for them to meet their new friends.

Zara: We have some wonderful new introductions arriving this year. One of the most exciting is our new Pembe the Pink Cat collectable range, a cute and distinctive collection that is already capturing hearts with its adorable design and strong collectability appeal.

We’re also delighted to be expanding our Winnie the Pooh o ering with the Winnie the Pooh 100 Infant Toy Collection. Created to celebrate the centenary of this much-loved character, the range features premium infant toys that make perfect gifts for babies.

Another standout launch is our adorable new Care Bears Baby range. Combining the nostalgia and positivity of the iconic Care Bears brand with beautifully soft fabrics and baby-safe features, the collection o ers a fresh opportunity for both gift and nursery retailers. What opportunities do you see for retailers this year?

Lauren: With the growth in the kidult market and the continued popularity of plush overall, there are many opportunities for retailers, particularly when choosing Keel Toys as a soft toy partner. Our Keeleco Botanical Garden collection and our range of Keeleco Bag Charms perfectly meet this demand, with beautiful fabrics, cutting edge designs, and many characters to collect.

Zara: Consumers are continuing to seek thoughtful gifts that have lasting emotional value, creating strong opportunities across baby, preschool and collectable plush categories. Retailers can benefit from ranges that appeal to multiple purchasing occasions, from baby showers and first birthdays through to seasonal gifting and everyday impulse purchases.

Character heritage remains incredibly important, with the likes of Paddington, Mr. Men Little Miss and Peter Rabbit performing exceptionally well. However, we’re also seeing strong interest in new collectable concepts and beautifully presented giftable plush such as Pembe and our new Cutydoos collections. Retailers that can o er a mix of trusted favourites alongside exciting new launches will be well placed to capture consumer attention and encourage repeat purchases.

What’s shaping your current pipeline and future plans?

Lauren: We care about building strong relationships with our customers, and this continues to shape our plans moving forward. This involves seeking feedback and improvements to our e-commerce website, crosspromoting our customers on social media, and constant redevelopment of our bestselling ranges.

Zara: Our focus remains on creating high-quality plush and infant toy collections that celebrate much-loved characters while delivering exceptional play and gifting value. We continue to see strong demand for products that combine softness, sensory features and emotional connection, particularly within the baby and preschool sectors.

Looking ahead, we’re continuing

character brands and exciting new opportunities. Innovation in fabrics, finishes and gifting formats continues to shape our development pipeline, ensuring we bring retailers products that resonate with today’s families while staying true to the warmth and charm that are at the heart of Rainbow Designs.

Coffee Break

Gifts Today catches up with Miss Milly owner Sarah Watmore to find out why she believes colour is the new black - and why retailers should be braver with colour

Walk into almost any successful gift or lifestyle retailer and one thing quickly becomes apparent: colour stops people in their tracks. Customers don’t always arrive looking for a particular product, but they do respond emotionally to what catches their eye. A vibrant display has the power to interrupt a customer’s journey through the store, inviting them to browse and often leading to impulse purchases they hadn’t planned to make.

Colour also helps tell a story. Rather than displaying jewellery, scarves, and handbags in separate areas, many retailers are now creating coordinated lifestyle displays where complementary products sit together. Grouping accessories by colour rather than category makes it easier for customers to imagine wearing them together, often increasing basket spend as they build a complete look.

The changing seasons provide another opportunity to refresh displays. Introducing a new colour palette every few months keeps displays looking fresh and encourages repeat visits, particularly when colours are echoed across different product categories.

While neutral tones will always have their place, many shoppers are increasingly looking for ways to inject personality into their wardrobe without investing in an entirely new outfit. Accessories offer an affordable way to do exactly that, whether it’s a statement necklace, a colourful scarf, or a vibrant handbag.

At Miss Milly, colour has always been at the heart of everything we do. Each season, our award-winning brand develops its own colour palette, inspired by both fashion forecasts and the shades we know our customers love. It’s a philosophy that continues to resonate with retailers and consumers alike, proving that when it comes to creating displays that inspire and products that sell, colour really is the new black.

Perfect pairs

Bare Kind

Bare Kind has launched a new countertop display designed to help retailers showcase its bestselling bamboo socks in a compact and impactful format.

Developed with independent retailers in mind, the flat-pack display is ideal for gift shops, visitor attractions, farm shops, and other smaller retail spaces where every inch counts.

The display highlights Bare Kind’s colourful animal sock designs and helps communicate the brand’s mission: every pair donates 10% of profits to a charity protecting the featured animal. By bringing this story to the forefront, retailers can create a stronger connection between the product and customer.

To support stockists, Bare Kind is o ering the display free with qualifying wholesale orders, making it even easier to create a dedicated Bare Kind destination in-store.

Stand: DP1-C91

What’s new on your stand?

What makes Inis unique is our dedication to a single signature fragrance. Rather than constantly introducing new products, we focus on the scent and quality our customers already adore. The magic is that once people discover it, they fall in love and always come back for more.

Earlier this year, we launched our Hair Care range - a fresh addition to the Inis family and an exciting launch for our trade show stand this season. Inspired by the energy and freshness of the sea, the collection is designed to leave hair looking healthy, vibrant, and full of shine, while carrying the sparkling, uplifting scent that Inis is known and loved for. Lightweight and free from sulphates and silicones, the range combines effective haircare with nourishing ingredients drawn from both the ocean and nature.

The Shampoo gently cleanses without stripping the hair of its natural moisture, while the Conditioner helps nourish, hydrate, and enhance shine without weighing hair down. Completing the collection is the Sea Salt Spray, which creates effortless beachy texture and volume while keeping hair soft and conditioned.

What’s the one product visitors shouldn’t miss?

We will have a new gift set aimed at the Christmas market and a new yearround Body Care set launching in September, so that’s very exciting. We will also have new Christmas gift bags to help drive sales at this key time of year.

Independent gift retailers reveal what makes Home & Gift unmissable - from must-see product ranges and exhibitors to how the show shapes future stock decisions

Leeds

What keeps you coming back to Home & Gift year after year?

It’s my local trade fair. I can literally get on a bus outside Chirpy and be there in less than half an hour! That’s not the only reason I go, but it’s lovely to have such a great show on my doorstep.

I love the layout; the fact that there’s lots of different marquees and areas to discover and lots of outdoor space, especially if the weather’s nice. I visit the design tents as I find they have products more suited to what I’m looking for in Chirpy.

Are there any product ranges or categories you’ll be looking out for this time?

I’ve just realised how many of my customers have dogs, so I’m looking to see the options for some pet accessories. I’ve been doing a survey in-store so I’ve got some ideas of what our customers would buy. I just need to find the right brands now.

Which exhibitors or brands are at the top of your visit list?

I love visiting Designworks Collective. I discovered this brand last year and their products quickly became our best sellers, so I’m looking to see what new designs they have. I also like to check out the crafting section as I find this show usually has some good options - perfect when thinking about Christmas.

Have you discovered any standout suppliers here in the past?

Last year I bought from Designworks Collective for the first time at this show to trial their products with Christmas in mind, and I realised I was onto a winner. I’ve placed regular orders over the last year and their candles have become our bestselling gift.

What’s been your best-ever find or most unexpected discovery at the show?

Last year I found some great winter scarves. It felt strange buying them while the sun was shining, but they proved very popular gifts once autumn arrived.

How does Home & Gift help shape your buying decisions for the season ahead?

I use Home & Gift as a trial for products for Christmas and I’ll be doing it again this year. I find it really useful to place some small orders with products which I think will work, have them delivered in early autumn and, if they sell, then I’m confident they’ll sell well at Christmas.

What keeps you coming back to Home & Gift year after year?

Home & Gift is one of the highlights of our year. As a mother-daughter team, it gives us the opportunity to step away from the day-to-day running of the shop and immerse ourselves in creativity, inspiration, and new ideas.

There’s something special about seeing products in person, meeting the people behind the brands, and having conversations that simply can’t happen over email. We always come away energised, with fresh ideas and a renewed excitement for the season ahead.

Are there any product ranges or categories you’ll be looking out for this time?

We’re seeing customers become much more thoughtful with their purchases. Rather than buying more, they’re buying better. We’ll be looking for products that feel timeless, beautifully made, and have a story behind them. Pieces that add personality to a home, make meaningful gifts, or bring a little everyday joy are always high on our list. We also expect to see customers continuing to embrace colour, character, and products with personality. Which exhibitors or brands are at the top of your visit list?

We always look forward to catching up with existing suppliers who have become friends over the years. Brands such as Talking Tables and Caroline Gardner are always a mustvisit, but some of our most exciting discoveries have come from smaller independent stands we’ve stumbled across unexpectedly. That’s one of the things we love most about Home & Gift: you never know where you’ll find your next bestseller.

Have you discovered any standout suppliers here in the past?

Absolutely. Some of our strongest and longest-standing supplier relationships began with a chance conversation at Home & Gift. We’ve discovered brands that our customers now actively seek out and collections that have become integral parts of our shop. It’s often those smaller, independent businesses with passion and personality that resonate most with both us and our customers.

What’s your most memorable Home & Gift moment?

Rather than one specific moment, it’s the tradition itself. Every year, we spend the day walking the halls together, discussing products, planning displays, and imagining how new collections will look in our shop. Looking back, some of our best decisions and most successful product launches started with a conversation or discovery made at Home & Gift.

What’s been your best-ever find or most unexpected discovery at the show?

The best discoveries are always the ones we weren’t looking for. We’ll arrive with a carefully planned buying list and leave talking about a completely unexpected brand that has captured our imagination. More often than not, those surprise finds become customer favourites and some of our strongest sellers.

How does Home & Gift help shape your buying decisions for the season ahead?

Nothing compares to seeing products in person. We can feel the quality, see the true colours, understand the craftsmanship, and visualise how collections will work together within our shop. Home & Gift helps us curate a cohesive customer experience rather than simply buying individual products, which is incredibly important to us as independent retailers.

Are there any product ranges or categories you’ll be looking out for?

Westonbirt Arboretum has one of the most beautiful and important collections of trees and plants from around the world, so the ranges I’m looking for need to reflect our visitors’ strong connection with nature, sustainability, and well-being.

Botanical- and woodland-inspired gifts perform well for us, so I’ll be searching for products and brands that have relevant themes or designs across homeware, stationery, greeting cards, and garden gifts.

Sustainability is a key consideration within our buying strategy, so I will be hunting for brands and products that use responsible sourcing, recycled materials, or UK-based production.

Products that help educate visitors about nature and the conservation efforts taking place on-site will also be on the agenda, as we have a high number of families with children visiting. Products like bug viewers, children’s binoculars, books, and nature-inspired plush are always popular.

Our peak season is September to December, when our shop transforms into an autumn and Christmas-inspired emporium. During this period, visitors are looking for festive gift ideas, as well as souvenirs and mementos of their visit.

Which exhibitors or brands are at the top of your visit list?

I’ve been buying for many years, but this will be my first visit to Home & Gift because my previous buying role in cruise retail meant that Spring Fair, Autumn Fair, and international trade shows were more relevant.

I’m excited to discover new suppliers and emerging brands, as well as catching up with existing suppliers. My plan is to keep an open diary to immerse myself in the show, finding both unique ranges and core bestsellers that will appeal to our customer demographic.

How does Home & Gift help shape your buying decisions for the season ahead?

Home & Gift will be an invaluable part of our buying calendar. Having been in my current role for just three months, I’m looking forward to exploring new brands and products that I would have bypassed in my previous role.

The advantage of seeing several brands in one location is that it gives me time to speak with suppliers, understand the stories behind the brands, and see and touch products in person rather than ordering from a catalogue or website. This helps me curate great ranges.

Although most of our A/W and Christmas orders have been placed, I will be looking for brands that could offer a quick turnaround and smaller minimums to trial in the second half in preparation for next year. The show will also help identify wider consumer trends and emerging opportunities to support our overall planning for 2027.

What keeps you coming back to Home & Gift year after year?

I’ve attended every single Home & Gift since 1994, and the thing that keeps me coming back is always inspiration! It’s the perfect time of year to take a few days out of the usual routine and absorb a whole host of new products and fresh ideas ready for the A/W season.

We love that it has such a relaxed and creative environment. You can step outside to enjoy the (hopefully nice!) weather and atmosphere while planning how to make the most of all the newness you’ve just taken on board.

Are there any product ranges or categories you’ll be looking out for this time?

We’re noticing customers looking for comfort, connection, and joy in what they buy. As we head towards A/W, we’ll be building on those themes throughout the shop.

For comfort, we’re looking for everything cosy and sensory - warm winter accessories such as scarves, blankets and socks, alongside natural bath and body products, home fragrance, books, stationery, puzzles and craft.

For connection, it’s all about meaningful gifting and mementos. Jewellery is a big part of this, alongside keepsakes, crystals, and gifts that help people celebrate relationships, milestones, and special moments.

At the other end of the spectrum, we have joy. So bright, bold colours, quirky characters, humour and self-expression are all key. And games, hosting, entertaining and products that make people smile.

We’re also expanding the storytelling throughout the shop, creating more of a journey of discovery. We’ll be looking out for products and categories that help bring those stories to life.

Which exhibitors or brands are at the top of your visit list?

We always check in with long-time suppliers such as PoM, Rosie Made A Thing, Molly Mae, Ginger Betty and East of India. They’ve all been an important part of our offering for years, and we love to see what’s new from them.

Other than that, we walk every hall multiple times looking out for every kind of new product, because some of the best discoveries are the ones you weren’t actively looking for.

Have you discovered any standout suppliers here in the past?

There are probably hundreds, if not thousands, of fantastic products we’ve picked up from Harrogate over the years. Many suppliers we’ve discovered there have gone on to become long-term success stories for us.

We first ordered from both PoM and Carrie Elspeth at Home & Gift and have continued to work with them for many years. That’s one of the things I love about the show; sometimes a chance discovery turns into a supplier relationship that lasts for decades.

What’s your most memorable Home & Gift moment?

It’s got to be the extremes of weather: the heatwaves, the almighty downpours, and everything in between. One year you’ll be running for shade, trying to stay out of the blazing sun. The next, you’ll be soaked through with rain. Once, I had to give up trying to walk up a hill in my summer sandals because so much rain was running through them as it rushed downstream!

What’s been your best-ever find or most unexpected discovery at the show?

After more than 30 years of attendance, I’m not sure anything can really surprise me now! But I always find something I didn’t realise I was looking for until I happened upon it. There could be products you might have discounted from a picture online, but that’s the joy of an in-person trade show. You’re browsing and discovering in real life, just like your customers do, and that’s always far more valuable.

How does Home & Gift help shape your buying decisions for the season ahead?

What Home & Gift does brilliantly is bring ideas together in one place and help you spot opportunities you might otherwise miss. Usually, I’ll notice a theme, mood, or emerging trend appearing across multiple suppliers. I can then build on that, finding products that complement each other and bringing together an original collection that feels unique to our shop.  Harrogate is key to getting that process started in preparation for autumn. There’s something special about being immersed in it all in person that sparks ideas that you simply don’t get from browsing online.

What keeps you coming back to Home & Gift year after year?

As an independent retailer, Home & Gift is invaluable. It allows us to source exciting new products, spot upcoming trends, and meet the people behind the brands. Every year we leave with fresh ideas and plenty of inspiration for the months ahead.

The show has a wonderful balance between business and enjoyment, while maintaining a personal feel that many larger trade shows can’t replicate. The relaxed pace and quieter atmosphere give us time to think and really enjoy the buying process.

We go with a rough plan for the day, but if we get taken off track it always makes for a memorable day either way.

Are there any product ranges or categories you’ll be looking out for this time?

We’re looking to expand our Gifts for Men range and will be looking for products that enhance our current selection and sit well alongside our existing ranges.

Which exhibitors or brands are at the top of your visit list?

We want to visit a few brands we’re currently loving including Wrendale Designs, Alice Wheeler London, Joe Davies, Kikkerland, Powell-Craft, Sass & Belle, and Wax Lyrical, to name just a few.

We love seeing new additions to their ranges in person and discovering products that we don’t already stock. It’s also great to catch up with sales reps with whom we have great relationships with, discuss business, and share experiences about the year so far and the ever-changing industry.

We always like to visit new stands that catch our eye as we walk around, or any brands we’ve come across in the past and now stock. Some this year will include Eleanor Bowmer, whose designs we already stock on items like Christmas Crackers, so we’d love to see the whole range and explore further. Also Fox Under the Moon - we’re loving all the inspiring gifts encouraging positivity and self-love at the moment.

Have you discovered any standout suppliers here in the past?

Over the years, we’ve discovered some fantastic brands. Two stand-outs were meeting DCUK for the first time and building a great relationship that became a real turning point for our success.

We also met Vivid Squid here. It’s always rewarding to look back and see how relationships that started at Harrogate have developed into successful long-term partnerships.

What’s your most memorable Home & Gift moment?

Some memories aren’t necessarily tied to a specific product launch or order, but to the atmosphere that makes Home & Gift so unique. We’ve had some fantastic supplier meetings, sat outside in the sunshine, enjoying a glass of Pimm’s, listening to live music, and chatting about the gift industry. Those informal conversations often lead to some of the best ideas and strongest supplier relationships.

What’s been your best-ever find or unexpected discovery at the show?

One of our most unexpected successes was discovering a Halloween-themed duck from DCUK. It was a little different from the products we would normally buy, but customers absolutely loved it and it became a real talking point.

Another was a quirky sausage dog stationery range from The Art File. We knew it was fun and eye-catching, but we were amazed by just how well it sold.

Those are the moments that make trade shows so exciting - you never quite know which product will capture customers’ imaginations and become a bestseller.

How does Home & Gift help shape your buying decisions for the season ahead?

It gives us the opportunity to see new product launches firsthand, discover emerging trends, and meet with both existing and potential suppliers. Being able to touch, feel, and compare products in person helps us make purchasing decisions, and conversations with exhibitors provide valuable insight into what our customers will be looking for in the coming months.

The show is always a great source of inspiration and helps us build a product range that feels fresh, relevant, and exciting for our customers, while giving us a clear sense of what’s emerging and what’s new.

What keeps you coming back to Home & Gift year after year?

Home & Gift is such a friendly event. Harrogate is the perfect backdrop and, being smaller than the larger gift fairs, you can take your time to meet all the exhibitors and ensure you haven’t missed anything ‘perfect for the shop’.

Are there any product ranges or categories you’ll be looking out for this time?

We’ve had a year or two filled with Highland cows - and the trend just seems to have no end! We will be searching for new products within this range to keep our customers happy. Also, we sell a lot of small items such as coasters and hanging hearts, so we’re always on the lookout for a new brand with fresh ideas.

Which exhibitors or brands are at the top of your visit list?

Some of the exhibitors I’ve earmarked for checking out this year include Suzie Blue, Rex London, The Little Dog Laughed, Pikkii, Libra Fine Arts, Tilnar Art, and Hill Interiors

Have you discovered any standout suppliers here in the past?

A couple of years ago, we spotted beautiful handmade glass items from Leona Stewart Glass, and Honest Love Our Planet, which is a fair-trade company that makes beautiful hand-painted papier-mâché elephant spieces. They were both lovely additions to our shop range and have been popular with our customers.

What’s your most memorable Home & Gift moment?

Funnily enough, it was sharing a table at a bar with one of Gift Today’s team members, who told us all about Lema Publishing and filled us in on the background to Home & Gift. It’s always good to meet like-minded people and you never know how things can benefit you in the long run. The Harrogate event has such a chilled feel, and it’s a great environment to work in!

What’s been your best-ever find or unexpected discovery at the show?

Tilnar Art was one of our best finds. Their beautiful recycled aluminium items have been a stalwart in our shop over the years, and we’ve sold more elephants and birds than I care to remember! It’s items like these that draw people in, and we just love coming to Harrogate to check out their new designs.

How does Home & Gift help shape your buying decisions for the season ahead?

Home & Gift shows us what is trending now or likely to be trending in the next season. It’s important for us to stay up to date with trends, but equally we do love to find something a little bit ‘different’ for our window display to catch the eyes of potential customers.

So, we basically spend all our time hunting for ‘just the right thing’ to include in our giftware offering. Mostly, we’re really good at picking out the popular items that work for us, but occasionally we do have to question our decisions!

Generally though, we have a loyal clientele and people visit regularly to see what’s new. Our town of St Neots is quite a popular place to visit, and so we sell lots of ‘just because’ gifts to visitors.

We don’t mind where our customers come from - as long as they keep coming and ensure our little shop survives this tricky economic climate that we’re all part of at the moment. At the end of the day, you have to love what you do - and I do love buying gifts for our shop!
