anuary is always a pivotal month for the gift industry, setting the pace for the year ahead as buying decisions begin to take shape. It’s when inspiration meets intent - and few events capture that better than Harrogate Christmas & Gift, which has firmly established itself as an early, strategic touchpoint for retailers keen to gain advance insight into festive, gift, and decorative lines, and plan ranges with confidence. Alongside this fair, a busy calendar of spring trade exhibitions this month gives buyers the perfect opportunity to refresh core collections, uncover new suppliers, and spot emerging design trends. In this issue, we bring you previews of the London shows Top Drawer S/S and Toy Fair - as well as a comprehensive look at what visitors can expect from Harrogate Christmas & Gift. Our Cover Star, Enesco, will be making its debut at this Yorkshire event, where it’s set to showcase its extensive portfolio spanning multiple price points, occasions, and demographics. As the company rightly points out, while the Christmas rush may be over, demand for unique, thoughtful, and high-quality gifts is evergreen. Birthdays will continue to be celebrated, babies will still be born, and spontaneous ‘just because’ gifting remains firmly front of mind for shoppers 365 days a year. So what’s in store from other suppliers this spring? For this issue’s Trade Talk section, we asked a selection of industry heavyweights to share some of their plans for the new season, and offer predictions on the themes set to shape the year ahead. Our Shop Talk contributors have also had their say. We challenged independent retailers to forecast what will be trending, ascending, and fading over the coming months - and their insights make for fascinating reading. We also shine a spotlight on two inspiring retailers. Follie owner Josie Rossington reflects on her journey from fashion design
to independent retail, and how her quirky, 14th-century, pink-fronted gift shop - which celebrated its 21st anniversary in November has become a much-loved Lincoln landmark. Meanwhile, five years on from launching Gifted, owner Wendy Daly tells us how she has transformed a small balloon business into a thriving gift shop in the Lancashire village of Bispham. Adding her perspective, our columnist Sara Allbright, director and co-founder of Retail100 Consulting, highlights a key consideration for the months ahead: an early Easter (Friday April 3 to Monday April 6), which by default means Mother’s Day arrives sooner, on Sunday March 15. Combined with Valentine’s Day on Saturday February 14, she describes this “magic trio” as crucial sales peaks in the first half. As she puts it, “there’s barely any time to catch your breath post-Christmas, so you need to be prepared and ready to go with the jingle bells still ringing in your ears!” With that in mind, we’ve packed this issue with pages of new product inspiration designed to help you entice shoppers and maximise sales - from perennially strong performers such as candles and fashion accessories to, of course, Christmasthemed gifts. Many of these items will be on show at the upcoming exhibitions, and as this issue goes to press, the Gifts Today team is gearing up for visits to the shows. Do say hello if you spot us in the aisles. As always, I’d love to hear from readers with news, views or an interest in taking part in our features, retail interviews, Trade Talk or Shop Talk sections. You can contact me at clare@lemapublishing.co.uk or via LinkedIn. Finally, myself, Marian and everyone here at Gifts Today would like to wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous 2026!

Giftware Association welcomes four new committee members
John Lewis launches
Gifting Emporium
John Lewis has unveiled a fresh concept at its newly refurbished Bluewater store: its first-ever 650 sq m Gifting Emporium. The ambitious overhaul comes in response to customer demand, with visits to the brand’s online gifting hub up 15% year-on-year. The Gifting Emporium features almost 1,800 new products and 14 new brands. Items are grouped by “passion points”, such as ‘Home Lover’, ‘Hobbies & Adventure’, ‘Botanist’, ‘Foodie’, ‘Spa & Wellbeing’, and ‘Kids’. New brands at the Gifting Emporium - and on the John Lewis online gifting hub - include &K Amsterdam, Bon Ton Toys, The Conran Shop, Ralph Lauren, Crosley, and IND!E, which offers 57 products from five brands: Glorious Mud, Queen Mee, Paul Marshall Johnson, Bokitta, and Cooler King. Jason Wilary-Attew, director of home at John Lewis, said: “From weddings and new babies to thoughtful thank-yous, John Lewis has long been the home of year-round gifting. We are turbocharging that with the launch of our first Gifting Emporium.... and we look forward to introducing it to more of our stores in the future.”
The Giftware Association (The GA) has appointed four new committee members: Meg Hawkins, Demi Pendakis, Stephen Spencer, and Jackson Szabo. The GA managing director Gemma Sault said: “Each member brings valuable insight and practical experience. Their contributions will help strengthen our strategy, improve the support we offer, and ensure we remain a relevant and confident voice for the industry.” Meg Hawkins is a British watercolour artist and founder of Meg Hawkins Ltd, known for natureinspired artwork across homeware, stationery and licensed collections. She brings practical insight into the needs of independent brands. Demi Pendakis, founder of luxury home fragrance brand F.Y.G., will support members looking to grow sustainably and strengthen their market presence. Stephen Spencer is the founder of Stephen Spencer + Associates. An established consultant in customer experience and retail strategy, he advises retailers, heritage destinations, and cultural organisations on creating effective visitor and commercial experiences. His knowledge of retail environments and consumer behaviour will support The GA’s work in member engagement and commercial development. Jackson Szabo is a portfolio director of Hyve Group, overseeing Spring Fair and Autumn Fair. His insight will help The GA deepen its industry connections and support businesses across the trade network.

Enesco renews partnership with Precious Moments
Enesco has announced that its US-based parent company Enesco, LLC and Precious Moments, Inc. have confirmed the renewal of their joint licensing partnership. Starting this month, Enesco will once again be responsible for the development, manufacturing, and worldwide distribution of Precious Moments figural and giftware formats. The partnership reunites two companies whose collaboration began in 1978, when Gene Freedman, founder and CEO of Enesco Imports, discovered the heartfelt illustrations of Precious Moments founder, the late Samuel “Sam” J. Butcher. Gene encouraged Sam to translate his drawings of teardrop-eyed children into threedimensional porcelain figurines, working with master sculptor Yasuhei Fujioka. This collaboration led to nearly three decades of success, global growth, and a passionate collector community. In 2005, Precious Moments moved development and distribution in-house. After 20 years of operating independently, both companies view this renewed partnership as a homecoming, aligning their shared strengths once again. Enesco and Precious Moments will immediately begin a phased transition, with new Precious Moments product set to launch globally, including in the UK, in early 2026.
INDX Gift Edit has announced the first wave of brands set to take part in the event, which launches on May 19. Glee returns to
Spring Fair

The Glee at Spring Fair concession show will strengthen the event’s garden and outdoor offering with a refreshed and carefully curated format. Jackson Szabo, portfolio director at Spring & Autumn Fair, said: “Spring Fair’s scale and cross-category audience create the perfect platform for an early-season edition of Glee. This move gives garden and outdoor brands unrivalled visibility, while offering retailers a richer and more connected sourcing experience across more product categories than ever before. It’s an exciting development and reflects the momentum driving both shows forward.” Glee at Spring Fair will take place from February 1-4 at NEC Birmingham, while Glee located with Autumn Fair will be held from September 8-10, also at NEC Birmingham.
Pantone unveils Colour of the Year
The global colour authority Pantone has introduced PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer as its Colour of the Year for 2026. This ethereal hue is described as a billowy white imbued with a feeling of serenity. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said: “At this time of transformation, when we are reimagining our future and our place in the world, Cloud Dancer is a discreet white hue offering a promise of clarity. The cacophony that surrounds us has become overwhelming, making it harder to hear the voices of our inner selves. As a conscious statement of simplification, Cloud Dancer enhances our focus, providing release from the distraction of external influences.” Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, added: “We are living in a transitional time in which people are seeking truth, possibility, and a new way of living. Cloud Dancer is an airy white hue that exemplifies our search for balance between our digital future and our primal need for human connection.”
Euroflorist acquires Don’t Buy Her Flowers International flower delivery service Euroflorist has acquired UK online gift retailer Don’t Buy Her Flowers (DBHF). Founded in 2014 by Steph Douglas (pictured), DBHF offers personalised gift packages for consumers and corporate clients from its Gloucestershire hub. Euroflorist CEO and group president Magnus Silfverberg said: “This transaction is our first step into the online gift market beyond flowers - a market worth an estimated EUR 7-10 billion in Europe. It broadens our offering and enables cross-selling of new gift categories on our UK site, eflorist.co.uk. Furthermore, we gain a strong UK team with in-house production and an exciting company with a well-established brand.” Steph commented: “Euroflorist has big growth plans, and partnering with them means we can grow while retaining the thoughtfulness that is at our core - something the Euroflorist team really recognises as our USP.” The DBHF team, brand identity and product ethos will remain unchanged, with Steph continuing as managing director. Euroflorist, headquartered in Malmö, Sweden, operates in 11 markets and connects customers to local florists and an expanding range of curated gifts.

Preview TOY FAIR
Let the fun begin
Rebecca Deeming-Mitchell, senior communications & events manager at Toy Fair organiser BTHA, shares her top 10 tips on how to get the most out of this month’s show
A
s Toy Fair returns to Olympia London from January 20 to January 22, gift retailers, buyers, and distributors will once again find themselves at the heart of the UK’s largest dedicated trade show for the toy, game, and hobby sector. For many in the gift trade, Toy Fair isn’t simply a sourcing trip - it’s the first major buying and trend-spotting opportunity of the year: a place where novelty items, licensed lines, and gift-worthy products first come to light. To ensure you make the most of your visit, here are my top 10 tips on how to help you leave the show feeling inspired and ready for the year ahead.
sets the tone for the year ahead. The curated displays of winners offer an essential overview of standout launches and emerging trends - helping gift buyers to plan ranges with confidence.
1. Prepare before you go
5. Be social
4. Leave time to explore The show’s real surprises often come from first-time exhibitors, start-ups, and smaller makers. Build in time to visit the Gold Zone, where an exciting roster of emerging companies will share their latest innovations. The next big gifting trend may well be tucked away, waiting to be discovered.
With hundreds of exhibitors across the Grand, National and Upper West Halls, preparation is crucial. Review the exhibitor list and study the floorplan on the Toy Fair website or the new Toy Fair app to get a full view of who’s exhibiting. From large, renowned companies including Spin Master, Jazwares, Vivid Goliath, Ravensburger, and Character Options, to new and smaller exhibitors such as Thumbs Up!, Worgan Games, Zvezdar and Craze, there’s something for everyone. Note your must-visit suppliers and map out high-priority stands. A well-planned route helps ensure you don’t miss key launches.
Follow the Toy Fair Instagram and official blog to stay up-to-date about exhibiting companies and featured products, both before and during the show. The Toy Fair team will share news from a range of exhibitors and provide a shortcut to many of the show’s highlights.
2. Lock in meetings early
Photos, short videos, and quick notes are invaluable when reviewing ranges back at the office. Visual references help align buying teams, assist merchandisers, and ensure nothing promising is overlooked. Always ask permission before photographing or filming products.
Diary slots fill up quickly, particularly with major manufacturers, distributors, and licensed brands. Booking appointments ahead of the show guarantees valuable face-to-face time and allows suppliers to prepare tailored presentations. Download the app before the show to contact relevant exhibitors easily.
3. Keep an eye on award wins Toy Fair is the year’s first major indicator of what’s coming next, so be sure to look out for the Hero Toys Awards, where the industry’s “next big thing” is unveiled and often
6. Enquire about show-only offers Many exhibitors run exclusive promotions at Toy Fair, from early-bird discounts to volume deals and introductory terms. Full details can be found on the app.
7. Document everything
8. Soak up demonstrations Live demos are where products really shine. Whether it’s a clever tech toy, an interactive plush, or a hands-on craft set, seeing items in action helps you judge their commercial and gifting potential far more effectively than browsing a catalogue.
9. Network beyond the stands Toy Fair is a hub for agents, licensors, distributors, and fellow retailers. Take time in the cafés and networking zones to connect with peers and partners. Feedback over the years shows that informal conversations across the three days often spark valuable new opportunities, critical for the year ahead.
10. Strike while the iron’s hot After three days of inspiration, be sure you follow up with suppliers promptly. Consolidate notes, confirm pricing, and place provisional orders while ranges are still fresh in your mind. Toy Fair offers an unrivalled opportunity to connect with emerging start-ups and industry titans - all under one roof. Register now at www.toyfair.co.uk to experience it firsthand.

Cover Story... Enesco
A new year brings n Debuting at Harrogate Christmas & Gift, global giftware giant Enesco will showcase its enviable portfolio through the art of compelling storytelling
A
s the calendar turns, the arrival of a new year is always an exciting time for the team at Enesco, bringing with it a surge of energy, renewed purpose, and - most importantly - fresh opportunities. And 2026 is no exception. The Christmas rush may have concluded, but the demand for unique, thoughtful, and high-quality gifts is evergreen. Birthdays will still be celebrated, babies will still be born, and spontaneous acts of appreciation and “just because” gifting remain front of mind for shoppers 365 days a year. Looking for a gift supplier with an extensive breadth of product to offer while also supporting independent retailers? Look no further than Enesco. A leading supplier to gift retailers, Enesco focuses on delivering not just products, but reliable, high-demand, and deeply recognised brands that drive foot traffic and ensure consistent sales for stores. The portfolio spans across price points, occasions, and demographics. Key licensed properties such as Disney Traditions, Beatrix Potter, and Yankee Candle offer evergreen appeal, attracting collectors and casual shoppers alike. They are complemented by signature artist-driven ranges, such as Heartwood Creek by Jim Shore and the deeply sentimental Willow Tree figurines.
Enesco recognises that new product introductions are the lifeblood of retail. Fresh inventory is critical, as it drives essential foot traffic and gives shoppers compelling reasons to visit stores - both physically and online. Following a recent distribution agreement between Enesco and Dalian Talent Group - a global leader in the design, manufacture, and distribution of branded and private-label candles - 2026 sees the launch of an exciting 70-plus-piece range of Peter Rabbit and Disney Home Fragrances. Giftable candles are inspired by beloved franchises such as Peter Rabbit, Disney Princesses, Mickey and Friends, Stitch, Disney Villains, and Winnie the Pooh. This crafted range of home fragrance brings to life the stories and worlds in which these iconic characters live. Using high-quality, high-content natural scents to ignite the senses and elevate spaces, it’s intended to transform any room into a haven of comfort and style - setting the mood, telling a story, and sparking a memory, one candle at a time. With initial orders shipping to retailers this month, the range consists of tin candles with an attractive SRP of £9.95, and larger wax candles - many beautifully gift-boxed - ranging from SRPs of £14.95 to £24.95. These are a must for any retailer wishing to offer customers something new and affordable for the year ahead. The powerful combination of heritage brands and innovative products guarantees retailers can fully stock their shelves with items that consumers actively seek out. A true, trusted heritage brand is, of course, Beatrix Potter: a testament to timeless nostalgia. Enesco is very proud to have been a leading Beatrix

Its extensive collection of giftware - which includes money banks, nursery sets, soft toys, alphabet figurines, Christmas baubles, and more - celebrates the beloved characters of Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck, and Benjamin Bunny, to name but a few. With two significant anniversaries ahead, an extensive campaign is planned between the licensor and partners such as Enesco to celebrate Beatrix Potter’s 160th birthday and the 125th anniversary of the first publication of “The Tale of Peter Rabbit”. There’s no better time to jump on board with Peter Rabbit and Enesco! Enesco is also renowned for masterfully weaving storytelling into its products, turning each piece into more than just a collectable - it becomes a treasured narrative. A perfect example is Department 56 Villages. Illuminated and intricately designed, these hand-painted porcelain villages capture the charm and nostalgia of beloved settings. Such licensed settings include Disney, The Grinch, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Harry Potter. Each creates a personal connection for collectors as their displays grow and evolve each year, embodying a legacy passed down through the generations. A fine display will be showcased at Harrogate Christmas & Gift, as well as at Christmasworld in the German city of Frankfurt, which takes place from February 6 to February 10. The team at Enesco is optimistic about the year ahead and remains committed to working with independent retailers by continuing to offer a breadth of product and price points, exclusive licences, and everyday giftware not available from any other source - supported by generous payment plans and promotions, excellent customer service support, an employed sales team, and a comprehensive B2B website incorporating a free image library. arrogate Christmas & Gift is an important trade show for the team at Straits Trading. Christmas products make up a large percentage of its Autumn and Winter offering, which will be bigger than ever in 2026. The festive selection has grown to more than 700 lines, including beautifully themed departments. The Woodland collection features pretty ornaments with pastel hues and a sprinkling of glitter - adorable forest animals gathering in festive cheer. Another range celebrates a traditional style of decorations, including a slipper-clad Father Christmas, cosy fireplaces, soaring sleighs, and the ever-supportive Mrs Claus. Alongside these new themes, Straits has further developed ranges that have proven successful. The bestselling glitter water spinners have evolved from lantern shapes into more complex designs with layered imagery, as well as musical and animated pieces. Sales director Steve Webb says: “The selling point for our new collection is ‘Festive with a Function’. We love glitter and sparkle, but why not add even more charm to every single item? Make them sing, make them dance, make them magical!” Steve’s passion is infectious, and his love for Christmas has prompted a move to a larger stand at the show. Newly located opposite Kaemingk in Hall G on an inviting L-shaped stand, he’s excited to have the space to show off the new collection to existing and new customers. Christmas trees, light-up glassware, and spinners are staples in the Straits collection, but for 2026, animated characters and plush are sure to draw a crowd. A set of singing plush animals, complete with moving mouths, brings extra fun to Christmas décor, while some of the larger moving Santa decorations are impossible to miss. It’s not just the large pieces that have been sprinkled with Straits’ magic; every item has been carefully considered. For example, a set of hanging decorations comes complete with a light-up stand, making them easy to display, while the pretty glassware ranges gently rotate to create a sparkling light show. Wreaths, wow & wonder Benross Marketing MD Amit Juneja reveals why statement décor, front-door favourites and lighting-led pieces are driving festive sales - as the Christmas Workshop brand balances innovation with timeless tradition to create instant impact and lasting Christmas rituals
“For the Benross Christmas Workshop brand, the most popular Christmas-themed gifts continue to be pieces that transform a space quickly and feel instantly festive. That’s why customers consistently gravitate to statement décor and front-door favourites items that create impact the moment they go up, and become part of annual traditions. Looking ahead, we’re especially excited by the ongoing appetite for décor that delivers a ‘wow’ moment at home, paired with a renewed love of classic styling. Shoppers want products that photograph beautifully for social sharing, but still feel warm, nostalgic, and family-friendly. Ranges that blend modern light features with traditional textures are perfectly placed. A standout bestseller in 2025 was our new range of festive mirror infinity lights. They resonate because they feel premium and magical, are easy to display (no styling expertise needed), and create high visual impact. Alongside that, traditional wreaths remain a reliable top seller because they’re timeless, instantly seasonal, and strongly linked to the ritual of welcoming guests making them both decorative and emotional purchases. What’s next for Benross and The Christmas Workshop is continuing to build curated collections that balance innovation and tradition - bringing more standout lighting-led pieces that deliver theatre, while refreshing core classics like wreaths with new finishes, formats, and co-ordinated add-ons that Call: 0151 4481200 help retailers build bigger baskets and tell a complete Email: sales@benross.com Christmas story.”

arrogate’s beloved Christmas & Gift is set to sparkle brighter than ever this year as Candlelight prepares to unveil its highlyanticipated Christmas ’26 range - marking a triumphant return to the event after a 15-year absence. Back by overwhelming demand, Candlelight’s presence at the fair is already generating excitement among buyers, retailers, and festive décor enthusiasts eager to see what the iconic brand has crafted for the upcoming season. The showcase in Harrogate represents Candlelight’s second exclusive sneak peek of its Christmas ’26 collection. It follows the success of the brand’s Christmas Showroom at London’s Business Design Centre in December, where the first preview drew strong attendance and enthusiastic feedback. Building on that momentum, Candlelight aims to bring fresh inspiration to Harrogate while recapturing the nostalgic appeal that made its earlier appearances so memorable. Visitors to the fair can look forward to an elevated and immersive experience, as Candlelight unveils a collection designed to celebrate the timeless warmth of the festive season while capturing modern trends. The Christmas ’26 range highlights the brand’s signature attention to craftsmanship, detail, and affordability - qualities that have earned Candlelight a loyal following across the UK giftware and home décor market. Although full details of the collection remain under wraps until opening day, Candlelight Head of Brand Tommy Bartles hints at themes that blend rich, atmospheric palettes with fresh contemporary accents. “Expect a strong return to natural textures, traditional motifs, and giftable items crafted to appeal not only to independent retailers seeking distinctive pieces, but also to larger stores looking to expand their seasonal offering,” he says. Candlelight’s decision to return to Harrogate Christmas & Gift after 15 years underscores the brand’s renewed commitment to engaging directly with
customers and the wider industry. As one of the UK’s most cherished seasonal trade events, the fair offers an ideal platform for showcasing creativity while capturing the spirit of the festive season. For Candlelight, its comeback marks both a celebration of heritage and a strategic step forward. “We’re absolutely delighted to be returning to Harrogate after so many years,” says Kate Winch, Head of Sales at Candlelight. “The reaction to our London showroom preview was phenomenal, and Harrogate felt like the perfect next stage to share the excitement. OPINION
“This is the time to act” E
The Giftware Association managing director Gemma Sault shares why the gift industry has every reason to feel optimistic in 2026
very January, I treat myself to a beautiful new notebook and a sleek fountain pen, promising myself that this will be the year of “New Year, New Me”. By the 4th, reality usually sets in - I’m knee-deep in Quality Street, singing “All By Myself” and questioning my life choices. But 2026 feels different. This isn’t just my year; it’s the year of The Giftware Association. You can’t move forward without reflecting on the journey so far. After three incredible months as managing director, I’ve had the privilege of meeting some of the most inspiring individuals in our industry: fearless, relentless, passionate, and above all, creative. Our members face challenges every day, from new tax initiatives to global trade tariffs, yet they continue to innovate and inspire. That resilience is what makes this sector so extraordinary - and why 2026 is brimming with opportunity. The giftware, homeware, and lifestyle industries are evolving rapidly. Consumer expectations are shifting towards sustainability, personalisation, and ethical practices. Digital platforms are transforming how we connect and sell. These changes bring challenges but also incredible opportunities for those ready to embrace them.
Our Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions To empower and support our members, we’ve created a set of 10 resolutions for us and them - because together, we can thrive. These aren’t just words; they’re commitments we’ll live and breathe in 2026: 1. Elevate the Industry - Be proud ambassadors for giftware, homeware, and stationery. 2. Champion Creativity - Celebrate originality and innovation at every turn. 3. Trade Fairly - Conduct business with honesty, respect, and integrity. 4. Protect Intellectual Property - Safeguard creativity - yours and others’. 5. Commit to Continuous Learning - Grow through education and shared expertise. 6. Embrace Diversity - Welcome all voices, ideas, and perspectives. 7. Support Sustainability - Protect our planet for future generations. 8. Network Generously - Share knowledge, opportunities, and inspiration. 9. Uphold Quality - Deliver products and services that meet the highest standards. 10. Innovate Boldly - Adapt to trends and technology to keep our sector vibrant. These resolutions reflect the values that will guide us, and we invite every member to adopt them as part of their own business journey. January isn’t just a page turning on the calendar; it’s a chance to set bold goals, explore new markets, and strengthen connections. For new businesses, it’s a golden window to build visibility and credibility. For established members, it’s an opportunity to deepen relationships and innovate. The first quarter often sets the tone for the rest of the year. Retailers and suppliers plan for seasonal trends, marketing strategies are refreshed, and networking opportunities arise as trade shows and industry events kick off. This is the time to act. Our mission for 2026 is simple: to help our members thrive. We’ll continue to offer practical guidance and resources - from legal advice to marketing strategies - to help businesses navigate challenges and seize opportunities.
Networking events will remain key, connecting members with buyers, suppliers, and peers who can spark growth, collaboration, and partnerships. We’ll also showcase members’ products and stories across our platforms and campaigns, and provide educational content and insight through webinars, workshops, and tailored trend reports. To make the most of this support, we encourage members to get involved: attend our events, join discussions, share your expertise, and use the tools and advice available to you. Explore partnerships with other members, and promote your products through our channels and industry events. The New Year is full of possibilities, and we’re excited to help you turn them into realities. Focus On... Belly Button Designs
A bold step into 2026 The new year brings innovative designs, new products, and a sense of excitement as the Belly Button Designs brand continues to grow on its giftware journey. Gifts Today finds out more from head of design and creative director Rachel Hare
B
elly Button Designs is really hitting its stride with its new releases for 2026. The brand specialises in a unique offering of in-house design and product development, and head of design and creative director Rachel Hare has plenty of experience in bringing design-led product to market, with 30 years of experience in greeting cards and gift packaging. The giftware arm of Belly Button Designs launched eight years ago, but it’s only really been in the past three years that the company has seen massive expansion, with investment and focus on new gifting categories.
Rachel says: “I’m just so excited to see all our hard work coming to fruition. We have a small but very talented and experienced team, and we hope we’re able to offer retailers something different from a brand they can return to again and again for quality sell-through and innovation, as well as a trusted name in the industry with such a long trading history.” Giftware is presented in stories or collections, and the brand-new ‘Mabel’ collection is a strong bold statement of colour - perfect for the new year. Some bestselling lines, such as the borosilicate glass mug, have become core products in the range and are updated with the latest designs. 2026 sees product categories expand further. The team develops these themselves in-house and the stoneware range is an exciting development that Rachel believes retailers will love. The ethos behind product innovation is one of purpose. “We want to embrace the need for sentiment in a tasteful and eco-conscious way,” says Rachel. “We’re very mindful and conscious with our packaging and don’t use plastic in anything we produce.” The team is now able to work a full calendar year ahead, and a new bumper 2026 brochure has been sent out to customers, which also includes transitional launches and Christmas too! The Signature Collection which launched in June 2025 as a luxury heritage collection, has proved hugely popular with retailers. It offers a collection of more
sentimental gifting in a neutral colour palette, making it an all-year-round offering. There is newness here too, with the release of brandnew product lines - from a statement vase to a whole new collection of titles in the bestselling 3D boxed tokens. The team at Belly Button Designs may be small, but it’s perfectly formed. Rachel concludes: “Some of us have worked together for over 25 years. We love what we do, and I hope this comes across in both the products and our service to our customers.”

Focus On... Museums & Galleries
A legacy
of artful gifts From innovative stationery to artist collaborations, Museums & Galleries continues to inspire with fresh designs, new licences, and exciting gift launches for 2026
I
n 1985, Caroline Humby Teck founded Museums & Galleries (M&G) to boost the commercial potential of museum shops, revolutionising the way they presented products. From the outset, the company aimed to produce a wide variety of stationery of the highest quality, interpreting and showcasing museum artwork sensitively while maintaining contemporary commercial appeal. M&G made a huge impact on the heritage sector, inspiring organisations to raise their ambitions for commercial partnerships. Museum licensing rapidly took root, blossoming over the following decades. Caroline passed away in 2001 at the age of 56. In 2013, Alan and Debbie Williams - already successful publishers - purchased M&G. Their vision, resources, and expertise in production and marketing gave M&G a fresh burst of momentum. The company rapidly explored new licences and gift products, fuelling dramatic year-on-year growth. Today, M&G remains true to its original mission while continuing to push the envelope with fresh ideas, gifts, and homeware. Its original cards and journals maintain strong appeal both in the UK and abroad. For spring, M&G aims to keep you stylish - and dry - with a new range of compact, lightweight folding umbrellas. Six designs include two from the V&A’s Art & Crafts collections - Leicester Wallpaper by William Morris and Frog Tile by William De Morgan - both already customer favourites. Other designs feature British printmaker Angela Harding’s charming Puffins, Hokusai’s The Great Wave from the British Museum, in a specially designed repeat pattern; designer Matthew Williamson’s glorious Peacock Ikat; and Emily Burningham’s serene English Saxifrage.
These umbrellas join the fine bone china mugs and spectacles cases (which launched last year) in the new M&G catalogue, available from this month. For several years, M&G has produced gift packaging, tote bags, gifts, and homeware from Angela Harding, and the company is delighted to announce it has acquired the exclusive licence to publish her greeting card range, including Christmas cards, die-cut cards, and advent calendars. All ranges are available this month, with the full collection on display at Spring Fair. M&G is also launching a giftware licence for Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit. This month sees the first products: a small collection of premium fine art cards and Christmas cards, with further giftware launches planned throughout the year to mark the 125th anniversary of the classic children’s book. Plus, a curated fine art card range featuring the work of contemporary artist Henry Fraser is being released. A mouth artist, inspirational author and speaker, Henry became paralysed from the shoulders down after dislocating his neck in 2009. He taught himself to draw and paint with pencils and paint by attaching utensils to a mouth stick - reigniting his childhood love for art. He says: “Adversity has given me a gift.” There are 12 designs in the launch range, which celebrate his love of nature and wildlife. In addition, all of M&G’s many collections have been updated and refreshed with new designs. The company looks forward to a busy year ahead, and will be exhibiting at all major British trade fairs.

Miss Milly
S/S26 marks the launch of Miss Milly’s biggest jewellery collection to date, with bold and bright taking centre stage. The key theme is oceanic, with mints, aquas, greens, and turquoise designs incorporating iridescence, swirls, sea glass, and waves. New resin and hand-painted pieces combine key colours in eye-catching ways, either as tonal blends or striking contrasts. Florals are another focus for this award-winning British brand, with handpainted daisies and ice flowers featured in necklaces, paired with co-ordinating earrings and elasticated bracelets. And new standalone chunky flower earrings in pink, white, blue, and turquoise will definitely be a love-them-or-hate-them offering. Miss Milly continues to offer a capsule collection of necklaces with a longer 46cm (18”) chain and magnetic fastening, now expanded with new resin styles. Focus On... Signare London
Meet Signare London… Signare London is a new fashion-led bag brand blending tapestry, embroidery and bold prints. Signare sales & marketing director Paul Travis explains the story behind the launch Tell us about Signare London. Signare London is the evolution of a brand family that began with Signare Tapestry, known for transforming culture and art into cherished keepsakes. While Signare Tapestry remains a heritage-inspired gift brand, Signare London runs alongside it as a modern, fashion-led label. They are distinct, but united by craftsmanship and creative storytelling. At Signare London, patterns tell stories. Using woven tapestry, embroidery, and high-definition digital prints, we embed design into every detail - from bags and straps to charms. Each piece becomes a canvas for creativity, turning accessories into bold, wearable art that celebrates personal style. The brand is created for bold, expressive individuals who see fashion as an extension of their personality. We’ve collaborated with emerging creative talent from across London to ensure our designs feel current and inspiring. Our name is inspired by the Latin word ‘signare’ - to mark, to sign, to make known. It reflects our belief that fashion should make a statement and tell your story. Exciting news! How has this come about? Cindy Qiu, the owner and inspiration behind Signare Tapestry, spotted a gap in the market in October 2024. She wanted to produce a quality, fashionfocused bag collection that combined our traditional signature tapestry with added embroidery and elevated styling. We began searching for a new factory that could deliver high quality, as well as an exclusive trading partner. By March 2025 we had both in place, enabling us to develop and launch Signare London. What are your target market sectors for Signare London? We’re targeting the department-store accessories sector, working very closely with buying group AIS (Associated Independent Stores) as a key trading partner. Beyond that, we’re focusing on quality garden centres, boutiques, and gift shops. We will have an exclusive distribution policy to support our stockists.
What are you launching with? We’re introducing three signature collections: B-Loved, Metroloom, and Lolliloom. B-Loved is romantic and refined, Metroloom pays tribute to London’s Underground heritage, and Lolliloom is bright, fun, and full of kawaii charm. Can you describe the three collections? B-Loved is where whimsy meets style. It blends youthful charm with an irresistibly cute twist. The range includes compact phone pouches, roomy totes, and moon bags, designed for life on the go. A signature bear mascot - dressed in chic streetwear - appears embroidered or printed, adding a touch of warmth and fun. Heart-and-shield monogram jacquard fabrics bring subtle luxury, while gold hardware, leather trims, and refined stitching elevate the playful look. B-Loved is for free spirits who want fashion that feels joyful and who don’t mind standing out with a smile. Metroloom celebrates the bold geometry and vivid colours of London’s iconic transport moquette patterns. The debut design is inspired by the Piccadilly line, and features striking shades of blue, red, and violet. Styles range from compact phone bags to roomy totes, all crafted for commuting, travel, and busy modern city living. Each piece is officially licensed by Transport for London, so customers literally carry a piece of London’s history reimagined for today. Lolliloom is a playful celebration of joyful prints and charming colours with a fruity twist. The debut print features red cherries and green leaves on a creamy beige canvas, creating a nostalgic, summery mood. Shapes include cute bucket bags and sleek moon silhouettes, all designed for maximum charm and everyday wearability. More patterns will follow, keeping the range fresh and fun. With bold prints, soft curves, glossy trims, and modern metal fittings, Lolliloom is perfect for free-spirited, colour-loving fashionistas who don’t take life too seriously. It’s all about wearing the joy - and carrying the sweet life. Come and see the whole collection at INDX Woman (stand P570) and Spring Fair (Hall 4, stand F30).

Henry & Co Home Fragrance
Candles
A bright spot in g Candles are a go-to option in the gift and lifestyle market - driven by growing consumer appetite for self-care, atmospheric home décor, and personalised gifting. We asked suppliers what’s igniting sales - and what’s next for this booming category
F
ew gift categories have enjoyed such steady growth in recent years as candles. We spoke with industry insiders to uncover the shifts in demand they’re seeing, the trends driving the market today, their top-selling lines, and the innovations lighting the way forward. ..
Have you noticed any shifts in consumer demand for candles in recent years? Hannah Jenkins, UK & Ireland director of Cereria Mollá 1899: Consumer interest in home fragrance has grown significantly, driven by a greater focus on wellness, self-care and creating comforting, personalised Hannah Jenkins home environments. Shoppers are increasingly seeking higher-quality, longer-lasting candles, with a strong preference for cleaner, more natural formulations, and brands that offer authentic craftsmanship and provenance. There’s also been a clear move towards premiumisation, with consumers willing to spend more on products that feel special, elevated and gift-worthy. David Brown, director of The David Brown Fragrance House Group: In the candle category, we’ve seen consumers become far more discerning. People are paying closer attention to what’s in a candle, where the ingredients come from, and how the fragrance develops as it burns. That shift has played directly into our “Field to Fragrance” philosophy, which gives retailers a clear point of difference: fragrances created from the ground up, using materials that we can trace right back to their source. Sharon Green
We’re also noticing stronger demand for scents that offer emotional benefits - calm, comfort, and focus - which is why our natural Wellbeing collection continues to gain traction. On the more traditional side, heritage-style candles with deeper, more complex profiles remain among our most consistent sellers. Sharon Green, managing director of Henry & Co Home Fragrance: Over the past year, we’ve noticed a real shift in how people buy candles. They’re no longer just a home fragrance - they’re about creating a mood, a moment, a sense of comfort, and a little everyday luxury. What trends are currently driving the candle sector? Hannah: Trends for S/S26 continue to focus on authenticity, wellbeing and mindful luxury. Authentic storytelling and craftsmanship resonate deeply, with buyers seeking brands with real heritage and artisanal integrity. Scent and self-care are converging; consumers want fragrances that restore, uplift and connect to natural elements. Minimalist, elegant packaging remains key, complementing contemporary interiors and communicating quiet confidence. Gifting continues to grow, and our expanded festive ranges will feature both home fragrance and body care, offering thoughtful, elevated presents that transform everyday rituals into moments of indulgence. To support our retail partners, we’re also enhancing our visual merchandising offer, introducing new branded furniture and modular display options across both home fragrance and body care to create a cohesive and luxurious in-store experience. Sharon: The candle market is being driven by a few key trends. People are looking for natural and sustainable products, with soy and coconut waxes increasingly preferred. At Henry & Co Home Fragrance, we’re proud to deliver on these values: our candles feature recyclable packaging and are made to be safe for furry friends. There’s also a growing focus on wellness and selfcare, with scented candles used to create calm, cosy
spaces at home. And design matters; candles are now expected to look as stylish as they smell. What are some of your bestselling products? Hannah: Our bestselling products reflect the brand’s signature balance of craftsmanship and sophisticated perfumery. Our 230g candle in Bergamotto di Calabria is currently our number one seller, driven by its fresh, uplifting and universally appealing scent profile that resonates year-round. We’re also seeing strong performance from our 100ml reed diffusers, which has highlighted a clear opportunity to introduce larger reed formats in 250ml and 500ml to meet consumer demand for longerlasting home fragrance solutions. To continue driving excitement and repeat purchase, we’re planning to expand our fragrance offer with two new seasonal fragrance launches - Tuberose & Jasmine and Basil & Mandarin - perfectly timed for key gifting moments such as Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. These additions will complement existing favourites including Black Orchid & Lily, Santal & Tonka, and Bulgarian Rose & Oud, helping retailers capture incremental sales during peak trading periods. Sharon: Our 30 cl scented candles remain our bestsellers, made from a perfect blend of coconut and soy wax and topped with bamboo lids. They fill a home with fragrance while looking beautiful, which our customers love. We’ve also seen a big increase in demand for smaller votive candles, particularly over Christmas. The 10 cl size works perfectly in gift sets, tapping into the trend for thoughtful, ready-made gifting. Any new lines or innovations you’re working on? Hannah: For S/S26, Cereria Mollá 1899 will continue to bring the artistry and craftsmanship of Spanish perfumery to the UK market, with two fragrance launches that celebrate authenticity, natural beauty and sensory escapism. Following overwhelming demand, we’re excited to introduce two new fragrances to the UK home fragrance range. Tuberose & Jasmine is a floral blend that opens

n gifting with bright citrus and green notes, evolving into an elegant heart of tuberose, jasmine and lily of the valley, and settling into a soft base of gardenia, vanilla, and musk. This fragrance reflects the growing S/S26 trend for serene white florals that evoke calm, optimism, and understated luxury. Basil & Mandarin is a vibrant, aromatic scent that layers bergamot, mandarin, orange, and lemon with fresh basil, enriched by cardamom and chypre undertones. Capturing the essence of Mediterranean freshness, it aligns with the wellbeing and botanical-purity trend dominating both home and personal fragrance. Each fragrance will be available in 230g and 600g candles, 100ml and 250ml reed diffusers. 500ml perfume room sprays, and incense sticks. In response to increasing demand for longerlasting fragrance and statement home pieces, we’re also introducing larger reed diffuser formats (250ml and 500ml) in our most loved fragrances: Bergamotto di Calabria, Santal & Tonka, and Black Orchid & Lily. Consumers are increasingly viewing home fragrance as an element of interior styling, and these larger formats not only provide greater scent longevity and diffusion, but also serve as decorative design features within the home. For retailers, they present a premium upsell opportunity and cater to the shift towards investment purchases, with customers preferring fewer, higher-quality items that deliver sustained pleasure and aesthetic value. Looking ahead, Cereria Mollá 1899 will also extend into bath and body care, introducing creams, washes and soaps inspired by our signature fragrances. This expansion reflects ongoing consumer feedback - our customers tell us our scents are so beautiful, they want to wear them. David: We’re investing in new blends and formats that deliver a richer sensory experience with cleaner, more responsible formulations. Innovation for us isn’t just about new fragrances; it’s about elevating how candles contribute to everyday living - whether that’s through longer, more controlled burns or more purposeful scent stories. Sharon: We’re excited about developing new fragrance blends and expanding our gifting options. How do you see the sector evolving? Hannah: The sector is moving towards sustainable premiumisation - luxury products made responsibly, with traceable ingredients and transparent production. Consumers will increasingly expect higher fragrance performance, cleaner and more natural formulations, beautiful reusable packaging, and brands with meaningful stories and values.
Retailers that curate elevated, artisanal brands and offer strong sensory experiences in-store will benefit most from this evolution. We believe Cereria Mollá 1899 is ideally positioned to lead this shift as demand for authentic, premium home fragrance continues to grow. David: The home fragrance sector is definitely moving towards transparency, authenticity, and a closer link to wellbeing. We see the future of candles sitting at the intersection of craftsmanship and conscious living - and our continued work with growers, perfumers, and natural materials allows us to evolve in exactly that direction. Sharon: I see the sector continuing to evolve as candles become lifestyle staples - combining sustainability, style, and the comforting, fragrant moments people want in their homes.
Curated collections
Belly Button Designs Creative director Rachel Hare says: “Our soy wax candles were launched last year and have been a consistent bestseller for us. They’re a great product to introduce a new retailer to the brand, as candles are such a good self-purchase and make a great gift. Friendship is one of our bestselling sentiments, and as we continue to grow as a gifting brand, we’ve expanded on it. We’re proud to produce all our designs in-house, allowing us to create curated collections which are totally unique. For spring, we’re launching a new giftware collection, Mabel, which we will be showcasing at Spring Fair. It features the bright, bold Mauve Flower, and includes a new fragrance, Pomegranate. All our candles are hand-poured in the UK and have a burn time of approximately 30 hours. Packed in units of four, a candle CDU is available to hold a mixed selection of 36 candles.

Buyer's eye
Independent gift buyers reveal the candle brands and scents flying off their shelves - from seasonal favourites to year-round bestsellers
James Bowden, proprietor of Clock Cards in Ware: We do well with Peppermint Grove candles and diffusers. They’re beautifully packaged, a good price, and the vessels look really smart. Heaven Scent’s recently launched Green Botanical range comes in beautiful green glass, and the fragrances are lovely. The Shiso, Vetiver & Frankincense range is a winner too; we sell it all year round, not just at Christmas! Cathy Frost, owner of Loveone in Ipswich: Candles from St Eval, and Plum & Ashby are bestsellers right now. Small votives and scented tealights are very popular. We always stock Christmas scents. but increasingly we’re selling seasonal fragrances such as pumpkin and woody aromas in the autumn, and garden and greenhouse scents in the summer. Linda McBride, owner of Gibbles, Gifts, Cards & Home in Anstruther: We sell a varied range, and seasonal scents such as cinnamon and spicy orange are top performers. Tins from Toasted Crumpet, which look lovely and smell amazing, are strong sellers too, along with tealights from Heaven Scent, which come in fabulous packaging. Priya Aurora, buyer of 20-strong southeast chain Lark London: Fig and pomegranate are top scents for us, and candle brands Aery, Paddywax, and Zesty Lemons move fastest. Nicola Hibon Jackson, founder of The Voewood in Blackheath Standard: Ortigia Sicilia candles do well as gifts, and St Eval’s Bay & Rosemary scented tin candles sell consistently. Its Orange & Cinnamon Christmas Gold-Dipped Pillar was a festive bestseller, and the Christmas range is always a repeat buy for our regulars. Gifts Today 37

For mindful moments The Fragrance House Group
The Fragrance House Group has expanded its Wellness Range with the launch of Joy: a candle designed to enrich everyday wellbeing through thoughtful fragrance blending. Built around the growing consumer shift towards moodenhancing home fragrances, Joy combines three key notes: freesia, selected for its light, uplifting floral notes; lemon, a bright, zesty citrus known to cut through mental fog and encourage optimism; and clary sage, a naturally balancing botanical prized for its calming, stress-easing properties. Together, these notes create a fragrance profile that feels radiant, modern, and genuinely mood-supportive - aligning with the brand’s wellness ethos that fragrance should offer more than just a pleasant aroma. The team explains: “For us, fragrance is about creating moments of balance, calm and joy in everyday life. We craft blends that smell beautiful, but also meaningfully support mind, body, and spirit.” Joy strengthens this positioning and adds further depth to a range that continues to resonate strongly with consumers seeking purposeful, wellbeing-led scents.

RETAIL INTERVIEW
Follie
Cheers to 21 Follie owner Josie Rossington reflects on her journey from fashion design to independent retail, and how her quirky 14th-century pink-fronted gift shop has become a Lincoln staple
F
ollie gift shop in Lincoln recently celebrated its 21st anniversary, and enters the new year as a thriving independent business - a success built on the instinct and personal passion of owner Josie Rossington. Before opening Follie, Josie’s life revolved around design. After studying fashion design at university, she worked in a variety of creative roles. Her early career took her from a luxury accessories company producing handmade gloves for films including “Titanic” and “The Man in the Iron Mask”, to designing corporate wear for train and bus companies. She also designed clothing and accessories for high street retailer Jigsaw while travelling in Australia. Alongside, she freelanced as a textile and print designer. Life took an unexpected turn when she returned home from her travels. For health
reasons, she spent the next four years working for a couple of local estate agents. “It wasn’t where I expected to be,” she says. “Eventually, I realised I needed an outlet for my creativity. After a lot of brainstorming and soul-searching, the idea for my shop was born.” The ideal location emerged in the heart of Lincoln’s historic Bailgate area, within view of the Lincolnshire city’s cathedral and castle. Preparing to open took six months, from finding the premises and securing a bank loan to sourcing stock. On November 1 2004, Follie opened its doors. “It’s a 14th-century building with exposed beams and wonky ceilings,” Josie says. “It’s quirky and full of character, and lends itself really well to the kind of shop that I wanted to create.” Over two decades, Josie learned the realities of running a small business. Trial, error and instinct
shaped her approach. “I’ve learnt to try not to do everything myself, which I find incredibly hard,” she admits. Building a trusted support network has been crucial. “I have an excellent accountant, brilliant staff, and work with an inspiring branding and web design company. They gave Follie’s branding and website a facelift to celebrate our 20th anniversary,” she says. The retail landscape has changed dramatically since 2004. “There was no Facebook or Instagram when I started, and you had to advertise in magazines or newspapers,” Josie recalls. Online research has made sourcing easier, but she still enjoys visiting physical trade fairs. “The internet will never replace the experience of holding something,” she says. And after the isolation of the pandemic years, Josie feels personal contact with customers is more important than ever: “Independent shops are a way of keeping communities together. People can get a friendly smile, a hello, human interaction, and great customer service.” So what sets Follie apart? “I’d like to think I have a great personal and interactive relationship with my customers,” Josie says. She works on the shop floor five days a week and often continues working from home on her ‘days off’. “And I stock unique items that are great value things you can’t resist treating yourself to. I also make a lot of products like my vintage fabric hearts filled with dried lavender. And I love where I live I’m really passionate about Lincoln, Lincolnshire, and the local community.” When sourcing new products, “there is only one rule: I only sell things that I love and would buy myself”. Her offer encompasses jewellery, cards, candles, scarves, interior accessories, fashion accessories, velvet ribbon, hair accessories, vintage finds, handmade lavender bags, soap, and hand cream.

1 years Key brands include Toasted Crumpet, Fieldfare Candle Company, My Doris, Cosy Buddha, Hot Tomato, Last True Angel, Siren Silver, Musango, Lucy Kemp Jewellery, Caroline Gardner, Laura Stodddart, Wanderlust Life, Sarah Kelleher, Stephanie Davis, Chic Antique, Miss Shorthair, Grand Illusions, and IB Laursen. Josie sources merchandise from multiple channels. She regularly attends Spring Fair, Autumn Fair, and Home & Gift, and aims to visit London shows at least once a year. “But if something catches my eye when I’m on holiday, I’ll usually buy it and then research the brand later. Or I might spot something on Instagram. I’m open to all ways of looking for new products.” Business throughout 2025 was strong, and earrings, soap, hand cream, candles, and cards performed particularly well. But a surprise hit was velvet ribbon, initially bought to tie Josie’s handmade lavender hearts. “I had to buy a large quantity so I thought, ‘I’ll buy some for me, and sell the rest in the shop’. ” With traditional haberdashers disappearing, customers now hunt for ribbon for wreaths and decorations - “and it adds a little flourish to a gift”. Josie’s selection meets that need. “It sells well because it’s lovely quality and a really good price. Last year I bought about 10.5km in total.” Follie connects with its audience through Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, where Josie posts a mix of personal moments and shop updates. The store offers gift vouchers, and while not a formal gift-wrapping service, every gift purchase is wrapped in tissue, placed in a Follie bag and finished with a pretty label. Looking ahead, Josie prefers organic growth over strict planning. She hopes to expand Follie’s ownbrand range, which currently comprises a mug, tote bag, tea towel, and Lincoln postcards. “I’d love to develop something that involves my collection of vintage fabrics,” she says. Her days begin with a walk to work, often stopping to photograph the cathedral - images that inspired her postcard line. Once in the shop, she checks emails, monitors social media, and manages online orders before letting the day unfold.
Inspiration for a social media post about a new product might strike - but only if the shop isn’t busy. After closing, she may tend to her allotment during lighter months, though work often continues at home. Josie finds many rewards in her role. “It’s wonderful when customers come in wearing something they bought before, or feel comfortable just browsing and taking in the atmosphere.” The most challenging part is managing behind-thescenes tasks: “I tend to overthink and find it quicker to do things myself, even though I know others could help.” Her least favourite chores include sorting utilities, insurance, broadband and other admin, while she enjoys visual merchandising, designing window displays, taking photos, and interacting with customers While she loves everything she stocks, the vintage treasures and her lavender hearts hold special meaning “because they’re one-offs and they’ve got a history. But the most rewarding thing I sell is the items I’ve designed myself. When customers return to buy them again, and you’re placing your third order of tote bags in a year, you know you’ve got it right.” Over the years, she’s fielded some unusual requests - from upright vacuum cleaner covers shaped like people to mugs with gorillas on them - but takes them all in her stride with humour. For those considering entering the world of gift retail, Josie offers clear advice: “You must love the products you sell. Get to know your customers firsthand so your shop feels personal. Make sure you’ve done every job in the shop don’t ask someone to do a task you wouldn’t do yourself. And keep a contingency fund for unexpected expenses in a separate account even if it’s just £10 a week.” Moving into its 22nd year, Follie remains a reflection of Josie’s dedication, flair, and eye for detail. It’s a shop shaped not only by her talent but by the enthusiasm, care, and personal touch she brings to it.

Trade talk As the calendar turns, leading suppliers share predictions on upcoming trends and market insights for the months ahead Keith Edmondson Joint Managing Director Langs For spring, do you have any exciting updates to share?
Holly Stafford-Smith Commercial & Operations Director G H Stafford & Son For spring, do you have any exciting updates to share?
We’re kicking off 2026 at Harrogate Christmas & Gift, where we’ll unveil our Christmas 2026 launch alongside new Halloween and Autumn collections. Jane Bourne (director of design and buying) and the design team have created some fantastic pieces, and with all artwork and illustrations produced inhouse, it’s something customers really value. After Harrogate, we head to Scotland’s Trade Fair Spring - always an enjoyable show and a great chance to meet customers in the brilliant setting of the SEC in Glasgow, We’ll then showcase the full 2026 range at Spring Fair, giving customers their first opportunity to see everything together. The team has worked incredibly hard to bring the full offer forward, and in response to customer requests, the entire 2026 range will be available to order and pre-order from this month - something we know will really support retailers’ planning. We’re also taking an exciting step into Europe as we prepare to exhibit at Ambiente (Hall 4.2, Booth K60C) for the first time - a natural progression as interest in the Langs brand continues to grow.
We’ve just returned from our latest sourcing trip to the Far East. While we can’t reveal too much yet, we’re really excited about what’s coming for S/S. We’re refining a fresh selection of styles that build on what our customers already love: practical, well-priced accessories with strong everyday appeal. Early samples are looking very promising, and if all goes to plan, we’ll be introducing new textures and finishes that bring something a little different into the range - without giving away too many secrets just yet!
Which trends do you expect to be popular in 2026?
Which trends do you expect to be popular in 2026?
Any guesses on what the next big thing will be?
One thing that stood out during our trip was a gentle resurgence of soft, tactile materials like suede and nubuck-look finishes. Warm tones and understated, easy-wear silhouettes seem to be gaining pace again. Beyond style, the biggest trend we expect to continue shaping 2026 is value-driven buying. With ongoing cost-of-living pressures and an uncertain economic climate, customers are making more considered choices. Retailers are looking for products that offer reliable sell-through, accessible price points, and everyday practicality. We foresee strong demand for well-priced, functional accessories that still feel special, alongside continued interest in good clearance opportunities as stores balance stock more cautiously.
How are you feeling about the business landscape this year?
2026 will no doubt bring its challenges, with the market still finding its footing and caution remaining the dominant tone. But internally, we’re entering the new year with a completely refreshed outlook. This past year has pushed us to rethink, rebuild, and refocus, leading to a more energised way of working across the business. We’ve strengthened our processes, invested in leadership development, and clarified our direction for the coming years. So, while the landscape may be tough, we’re heading into 2026 with greater alignment, momentum, and a renewed sense of purpose as we prepare for our 80th anniversary in 2027.
Customers continue to look for products with a warm, welcoming feel, and designs with a bit of character. Simplicity, charm, and well-crafted details are still very much in demand. We’re also seeing interest in cohesive ranges that work smoothly across seasons. At the same time, we’re very aware of price points. It matters to us that what we offer is not only exclusive in design, but also delivers exciting and competitive price options. Originality. Customers want ranges that feel unique, and our inhouse designs give us that point of difference. We’re also seeing strong demand for collections that remain consistent across the seasons. Above all, retailers want value - exclusive products at competitive price points - and that’s where we’re putting our focus.
How are you feeling about the business landscape this year?
I’m feeling very positive. The reaction to our Spring and Summer launches has been outstanding, with pre-orders significantly higher than for the same seasons last year. We’re forever grateful to our amazing customers for their support; it genuinely means a great deal to us. We’re also fortunate to have a great team, including our sales agents who represent Langs so well on the road and help maintain the close customer relationships we value. In addition, we’re seeing growing interest in bespoke opportunities, and our in-house design team is well placed to support customers looking for something tailored. It’s a service we’re delighted to offer and one that adds real value. Overall, I’m excited for what 2026 holds. There will be challenges, as always, but with the momentum we’re seeing, the dedication of our team, and the support of our customers, we feel in a strong position for the year ahead.

Paul Hooker Managing Director Joe Davies For spring, do you have any exciting updates to share?
We’re delighted to share that for 2026 Joe Davies will be a sponsor of the Greats Awards in May. We’ve also strengthened our sales team with the promotion of our northern area representative, Rebecca Morrisroe, to national sales manager. Spring will also see the launch of our newest licensed range, Fox Under the Moon, created by Sunday Times charting author/artist Stacey MacNeill. She will join us at Spring Fair to celebrate the launch, which we expect to be a real highlight of the show.
Which trends do you expect to be popular in 2026?
Our Village Pottery tealights continue to perform exceptionally well, especially shops, croft houses, and pub designs, and we have several strong new additions arriving this spring. Bold florals are on the rise, and robins remain popular well beyond Christmas, appearing across general gift lines. Ceramic mini vases have been surprisingly popular. For Christmas 2026, traditional teddy bears look set to be a festive favourite. In jewellery, we’re seeing fruits, forget-me-nots, and carded jewellery with heartfelt sentiment messages gaining real traction.
Any guesses on what the next big thing will be?
Positivity-driven sentiments continue to resonate with shoppers - particularly when paired with crochet textures and comforting imagery. We’re also seeing fruits and food motifs emerging strongly across categories, suggesting they could be a major trend for spring.
How are you feeling about the business landscape this year?
It’s a demanding time for independents, with increasing costs and tax pressures putting real strain on small businesses. Our focus is on helping our customers meet those challenges - through flexible “little and often” ordering, reliable service, and thoughtful new ranges that offer commerciality without large commitments. Whatever 2026 brings, we’re here to support customers every step of the way.
Sophie Aldred Marketing and Customer Care Manager Aromatize For spring, do you have any exciting updates to share?
The biggest news is that we will be distributing three new brands: Hello Kitty, Mr. Men, and Care Bears. This follows on from the 2025 launch of the French Connection Home Fragrance collection, which has done well for us. I’m also excited about our new Woodbridge melter and wax sets, and new designs in our LED Reed Diffusers. We spent a lot of time developing the gift sets, knowing that this style of item sells well for our customers, who love the quality and price point. Our goal was to supply pieces suitable for any occasion, from Mother’s Day to a new home gift. The LED Reed Diffusers have been a runaway success. Their design is simple but works beautifully, and we’ve had a lot of compliments about our in-housedesigned packaging. We’re sure this collection will remain a bestseller into 2026.
Which trends do you expect to be popular in 2026?
There’s a clear trend towards licensed products, and this will continue. Our customers like these ranges because they already have a dedicated fanbase and work well to create impactful, themed displays. The appeal of licensed characters spans generations. For example, the Mr. Men are 50 years old, but I remember them fondly from the 1990s (Little Miss Naughty was my favourite!) - and my son enjoys them today as well.
Rani Moochhala Founder Paper Mirchi For spring, do you have any exciting updates to share?
We’re expanding our collection with new home, gifts, and stationery ranges. This expansion continues our focus on responsible production, using 100% tree-free materials made from recycled cotton paper and organic fabric. The new collection includes decorative home accessories, design-led on-the-go products, and premium notebooks featuring our signature hand-marbled and block printing aesthetic. Designed in our London studio and made in India by skilled artisans, the range offers high-quality, sustainable products with strong visual impact. We are also expanding our gift wrap and greeting card offering with fresh designs inspired by current trends, including charming bows, classic ginghams with a twist, fun ditsy prints, and uplifting colour palettes such as soft butter yellow and terracotta. We will showcase the full launch at Spring Fair and PG Live.
Which trends do you expect to be popular in 2026?
We anticipate a continued celebration of warm pastels such as butter yellow, along with earthy neutrals and fresh botanical-inspired colour palettes. We also expect a growing focus on elevated everyday items, with handmade, small batch creations gaining more appreciation than ever. Gifts Today 43

Jessica Barker Marketing & Business Development Manager Best Kept Secrets For spring, do you have any exciting updates to share?
As consumers continue to prioritise the home as a place of comfort and personal expression, we’re thrilled to announce the launch of our new Natural Harmony Collection this spring. This range blends contemporary home styling with premium fragrance. Designed to be as much a décor piece as a scent experience, it taps into the trend of candles and diffusers as essential lifestyle accessories. All the candles are crafted from a coconut blend wax. This ensures a longer, cleaner burn with minimal soot, making it a premium, safe, and environmentally-conscious choice for the modern home. Available in reed diffusers, tin candles and tea light trios, the collection spans 12 fragrances across four scent families: Floral, Aromatic, Zesty, and Fresh. Standout blends include Island Berry Grove with warm notes of Black Pepper and Amber, and Beyond the Clouds with uplifting Mandarin and Jasmine. Other favourites are Misty Rose and Moonlit Bay. With elegant, design-led, premium packaging designed to enhance in-store presentation and visual merchandising, the collection is ideal for cross-merchandising within gifting, home décor and seasonal displays. Its aesthetic has been developed to fit seamlessly in lifestyle retail environments - from boutique independents to larger department stores and garden centres. For retailers looking to expand their premium candle and diffuser space and drive incremental gifting sales, Natural Harmony delivers a high-impact range that combines styling, scent, and strong point-of-sale appeal.
Sarah Watmore Founder Miss Milly For spring, do you have any exciting updates to share?
We’re launching our biggest jewellery collection yet, bursting with colour across both our resin and hand-painted sub-ranges. Magnetic brooches continue to fly out, and we have lots of new designs to share. With more companies now offering their own versions of this fantastic product line, we’re staying focused on bringing out a variety of new designs twice a year, in our personally curated seasonal colour palettes.
Which trends do you expect to be popular in 2026?
Oversized flower earrings are our niche trend for 2026 and we have a couple of striking designs in gorgeous spring and summer shades. The key theme for our spring jewellery is oceanic, with a great mix of aquas, turquoises, and mint greens in flowing, wave-like designs.
Any guesses on what the next big thing will be? 2026 is the Chinese zodiac Year of The Fire Horse: a symbol of strength and passion. With horses also being seen as lucky, we expect this motif to pop up early in the year.
How are you feeling about the business landscape this year?
With commerce sadly following a de-globalisation trend - at least for small businesses - as trading with the US and Europe gets more difficult, there will be stiffer competition in the UK as the focus turns national. I’m generally optimistic but my gut instinct is that if you manage to stay roughly where you are over the next year or two, you’ll be doing well - and any growth should definitely be celebrated.
Rachel Hare Creative Director Belly Button Designs For spring, do you have any exciting updates to share? We’re launching a new giftware collection, Mabel, which we’ll be showcasing at Spring Fair. The range introduces new product lines, including stoneware mugs, plates, and bowls.
Which trends do you expect to be popular in 2026?
I expect gifting to continue becoming more purposeful, with elements of giftware crossing over into homeware. Sentiments remain strong and continue to be a key part of the gifting sector.
How are you feeling about the business landscape this year?
I’m excited and confident that retailers are looking for newness, and are becoming increasingly confident in looking to Belly Button as a giftware brand.

Diary of a gift shop With smart advertising, refreshed shop signage, and strong community ties, Hand Picked by Henrietta owner Sarah Halsall reflects on a whirlwind festive season in the Cheshire town of Poynton
W
hile some industries slip into a quiet lull, December in the gift world is nothing short of silly season - our busiest month of the year. Fuelled by Berocca and enthusiasm, we made a few key changes to keep up with the festive rush. Growing up as a farmer’s daughter, the saying “make hay while the sun shines” always comes to mind. December was exactly that moment. Shoppers were out with purpose, ready to buy. Our job was to make it easy for them - and inspire them to choose us. So we extended our opening hours and increased our advertising to meet the demand head-on.
Advertising on a budget Facebook remains our most effective low-cost tool. We schedule at least a couple of posts a day - a mix of products, people, and a little fun. This year we opened a box from the Legami advent calendar every day and gave away the contents. It boosted engagement, kept customers curious, and - crucially - brought them back to our page daily. The more they seek us out, the more the algorithm rewards us. We also invested in a local Facebook Christmas Market group. For a small fee, we posted directly into a large private community, and complemented this by sharing our best-performing weekly post into other local groups that allow business promotion.
Each group has its own rules; one of the biggest near us only allows business posts on Mondays. It costs nothing - but takes time - and reusing topperforming content means we know it resonates. Offline, our half-page advert in the church magazine was surprisingly effective. It’s affordable, reaches a different demographic, and customers mentioned they’d seen us there. It was a great reminder that traditional marketing still works.
Poynton Christmas Fest Poynton’s version of a Christmas light switchon is a highlight of the year. The main road is closed for three hours and transformed into a bustling festive market. With brass bands, entertainment, stalls, and food, it’s a community event that never fails to bring people together - and into the Christmas spirit. This year’s turnout was fantastic, helped by mild weather. I’ve been involved in planning the event for a couple of years now, and I’d highly recommend getting involved with your own local Christmas celebrations. Even if you’re not on the planning team, having a stall or presence on the night can raise your local profile enormously. And if your town doesn’t have an event, consider creating your own. Partner with a complementary business and you’ll reach new audiences together.
New shop signs Last month we also treated ourselves to new shop signage. My husband and son helped mount them onto our somewhat unusual canopy - which needed repairs anyway after a delivery van collided with it! It felt like the perfect moment to refresh the look and tie the signs in with our giftbag branding. The fabulous greeting card publisher Lottie Simpson kindly allowed us to use her illustrations of local landmarks, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
Festive sellers So, what was flying off the shelves? For starters, Legami Erasable Pens - we couldn’t keep them in stock! Children were collecting, trading, and buying them for Secret Santa presents. At £2, they’re perfect for pocket-money spending - and no one ever buys just one. Relation Christmas cards performed really well this season too. We had a mix from Paper Salad, Second Nature, and Ling Design. Another success story was tealight houses from Joe Davies, paired with scented tealights from Candlelight. One local company even ordered 56 sets for staff gifts! Wishing you a successful 2026. Here’s to a thriving year ahead for all of us in the gift industry. Gifts Today 45

RETAIL INTERVIEW
Gifted
“I decided to take t Five years after launching Gifted, owner Wendy Daly tells Clare Turner how she grew a small balloon venture into a thriving gift shop in the Lancashire village of Bispham
What inspired your move into gift retail? I worked at my dad’s card shop in Cleveleys [a seaside town in Lancashire] for around 10 years. It taught me so much about customer service, buying stock, and creating a friendly shopping atmosphere. During lockdown, I took an online balloon art course just for fun - and before I knew it, I’d started a small balloon business from home. I began making balloon displays for birthdays and special occasions, and it really took off.
Just four months later, a shop unit came up for rent in my village of Bispham [near Blackpool, in Lancashire]. It felt like fate. With my background in cards and gifts, and my new passion for balloon art, I decided to take the leap and open my own shop. That’s how Gifted was born - a place where I could combine creativity, community, and a love of thoughtful, celebratory products. Tell us a bit about Gifted. I opened Gifted in October 2020. I’d always dreamed of having my own shop, and when the local card shop closed and the premises became available, I knew I couldn’t miss the opportunity. My sister Sharon joined me, and we’ve been a great team ever since. Together, we’ve grown Gifted into a busy, welcoming shop that has become part of the local community. Congratulations on your fifth birthday! How did you celebrate? Thank you! Reaching our fifth birthday was a wonderful milestone. We celebrated with a giveaway weekend: every customer who shopped with us was entered into a prize draw to win a voucher. We decorated the window with a birthday display and had chocolates on the counter for everyone who popped in. It was such a lovely weekend, full of friendly faces and warm wishes from our regulars.
Sisters Wendy and Sharon
What sets your business apart from other gift shops? Customers often tell us that it’s our beautiful card selection and the wide variety of thoughtful gifts that make Gifted special. But I think what really sets us apart is our personal touch and sense of community. We love getting to know our customers and helping them find the perfect card, gift, or balloon.
We’re very lucky to have a loyal base of regulars, and each year we see our customer numbers grow. Word of mouth makes such a difference, and it’s wonderful to see new faces popping in because a friend or neighbour recommended us. Describe your range. We have everything for every occasion. Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, new baby, wedding, or just a little “thinking of you” - we’ll have something special to suit, from greeting cards and giftware to balloons and party decorations. We work with a mix of trusted suppliers who’ve been fantastic over the years, and stock a wonderful mix of brands including East of India, Life Charms, Joe Davies, Wilberry Toys, Best Kept Secrets, Accessories by Park Lane, Powder, Gemjar, Warmies, Heart & Home, Boofle, Me to You, and History & Heraldry (the H & H Group). Our card suppliers include ICG, Words ‘n’ Wishes, Jonny Javelin, Cardigan Cards, Cherry Orchard, Carte Blanche, UK Greetings, and Berni Parker. Crosswear Trading supplies our balloons and partyware. Where do you source products? I enjoy visiting Home & Gift. It’s always full of inspiration, and it’s great to see products in person, meet suppliers, and spot new trends. I usually come away with a few new ranges to refresh the shop’s offering. What’s your selection criteria? I always choose products that I know our customers will love - thoughtful, beautifully made pieces with appealing packaging. And if I personally love something, that’s always a bonus! Which categories are performing well? Cards are definitely our bestselling category. Customers come back time and again because they

e the leap” know they’ll find something lovely in our selection. Gifts follow closely behind, especially those that have a meaningful message or sentiment. Any unexpected success stories? Our balloon displays have become a real talking point, especially our seasonal designs. Every Easter, we create giant bunny balloons filled with chocolate eggs and personalised with each child’s name. At Christmas, our Elf Arrival Balloons - a giant elf with an Elf on the Shelf hidden inside - are a huge hit. The shop fills up with bunnies and elves, and it’s chaos in the best possible way! Customers absolutely love it, and it has become a real tradition for many families. How do you get the word out there? A lot of our business comes from word of mouth, which is such a compliment. We also keep our social media pages active with regular updates, new arrivals, and photos of our latest balloon creations. To thank our followers - and to encourage new ones - we’re running a monthly giveaway throughout 2026. One lucky follower each month will win a £30 Gifted voucher. Do you offer any services? We offer free cellophane gift wrapping with a bow, ideal for last-minute gifts or when you want something ready to give straight away. We also recently introduced gift vouchers.
What’s a typical day for you? Every day is different, which is what I love. Most days involve helping customers, inflating balloons, creating displays, pricing and stocking cards, unpacking deliveries, and keeping up with orders. I order cards weekly, balloons twice a week, and gifts constantly - there’s always something new coming in! What’s the most rewarding and challenging part of your job? One of the most challenging parts is also the most rewarding: creating large or intricate balloon displays. They can be time-consuming and fiddly, but seeing the finished result - and customers’ reactions - makes it all worthwhile. What do you enjoy most and least? I love changing the window display with the seasons. It’s a chance to get creative and make something eye-catching that stops people in their tracks. The least fun part is probably the admin… but it’s all part of keeping things running smoothly. When do you and your team have the most fun? Definitely when new stock arrives! There’s nothing better than opening up boxes of new products and seeing what’s inside.
What’s next for your gifts? We recently added something exciting: large lightup numbers for hire. They’re perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, and events. We also offer matching balloon displays, which are really popular.
What advice would you give someone starting in gift retail? Keep your shop looking fresh by regularly restocking and introducing new lines. Listen to your customers, stay adaptable, and don’t be afraid to try something different. Most of all, friendly service really does go a long way.
What’s next for your business? After completing our first five-year lease, we’ve now signed for another five years, which feels like such an achievement. With that in mind, we’re also expanding. There’s an old stockroom (12ft x 9ft) at the back of the shop that’s unused, so we’re transforming it into additional retail space.
Finally, anything else you’d like to add? Just a big thank you to our customers and community who’ve supported Gifted since day one. We wouldn’t be here without them. Every time someone chooses to shop local, it really does make a difference. Here’s to another five years!

SHOP TALK K What’s ascending, trending and ending on the gift-giving scene in 2026? Independent retailers reveal their trading horoscopes and ambitions to Clare Turner
Linda McBride Owner Gibbles, Gifts, Cards & Home Anstruther Fife What’s hot for 2026? Going into 2026, I think hot products may be those that are both beautiful and useful. People are looking for perceived value, and items which fulfil this brief will be popular. We sell flower room diffusers from The Candle Brand, which have wildflower seeded paper labels (ready to be planted to grow your own wildflowers). These not only look stunning but give the purchaser or recipient a longer-lasting gift. I also predict that quality will still be sought after, especially with thoughtful packaging that uses more natural materials. What’s not? I imagine that gifts at the lower end of the market will decline in popularity, as customers gravitate towards items that offer longevity and value for money. If customers are working with limited budgets, they may well want to spend them wisely and sustainably.
Sally Wilde
What’s next? As we move into spring, I predict that outdoor and garden products will be a hit. Last year’s lovely weather is probably still fresh in people’s minds, and many will want to spend more time outside, making their gardens an extension of their inside space.
Owner Planet Sal Honiton Devon
If you could set three New Year’s resolutions for your business, what would they be? I tend not to make many resolutions, but curating our range of gifts is high on our list of priorities - giving over space to better-selling items and selling off some of our slowermoving products.
What’s hot for 2026? I feel that everyone will need cheering up in 2026 just as much as they did in 2025! So I would say: affordable, useful and fun gifts. Things they can treat their loved ones - or themselves - to, which won’t break the bank but will make them smile every day. A mad and quirky pair of socks, like the furry pairs from Socktopus or the cheeky ones from Smiling Faces; a fun or cheeky mug from Dean Morris Cards or Brainbox Candy; and the gorgeous Moomin gloves from House Of Disaster are all great examples I’ve also found music-related items are booming at the moment. The CGB guitar gifting range and Gift Republic’s vinyl record themed products are flying out. What’s not? Outside the main gifting times, I find customers really hesitate if the price tag in my shop is over £30. They would rather buy two items for £15. I think this trend will continue into 2026 - small weekly gifts and treats for the family, rather than one large purchase. What’s next? I’m hoping for another lovely summer and lots of tourists in the area. Last year I had a lot of requests for locally-based gifts such as fudge, coasters, mugs and, especially, fridge magnets for camper van collections. So I plan to source more of these at Spring Fair. If you could set three New Year’s resolutions for your business, what would they be? Budget better with my buying - I’m like a magpie for shiny things! So far I’ve resisted Instagram and TikTok, but I know this needs addressing. And find even more ways to increase footfall, as we now have a few empty units in our shopping court. I’m currently looking at live-music options.
Nicola Hibon Jackson Founder The Voewood Blackheath Standard London What’s hot for 2026? Small indulgences are looking enticing for 2026. We’re already noticing a trend: many customers come in to buy a gift for someone, and then decide to treat themselves to something like a pair of earrings or a luxury bubble bath. What’s not? We’ve seen a significant drop off in sales of wax melts, with customers now favouring candles and tealights. What’s next? Homeware is doing well, particularly ranges such as HK Living, which work for both gifting and treating oneself. These are mix-and-match collections, allowing customers to add something new to their interiors look without having to buy into a big range. And perfume! Our customers can’t get enough of different fragrances at the moment. If you could set three New Year’s resolutions for your business, what would they be? Better support for small independent businesses, at both national and local government levels. A dramatic improvement in the financial state of the nation, giving consumers the ability to enjoy life more. And some exciting products to judge in the Gift of the Year Awards!

James Bowden Proprietor Clock Cards Ware Hertfordshire What’s hot for 2026? Clock Cards is a design-led card, gift and framing shop. We’ve morphed into more of a gift shop over the years, as cards now account for only 36% of our turnover. The Happy Fruit and Veg Farm range from SWR Trading will be big to start the year. This range of handmade crochet characters features smiling fruits, veggies, and farmyard animals, each holding a little message card with a positive quote. Retailing for £5.95, we sell several each day. Zelly scarves continue to do well for us, and now come with lovely rope-handled gift bags. Rosie Made A Thing coasters and magnetic pads are perennial bestsellers. Isles & Stars costume jewellery is always bang on trend - good value and quality too. Finally, Roka bags are great and very well made. What’s next? We’re testing the water with Noodoll plush toys. These are big in Japan, and we’ve seen them in Waterstones and Selfridges, so we’re hopeful. Although we’re an official Jellycat stockist, the small amounts we receive sell out in a day. We love the product and the Steepy Tea Bags were particularly good sellers. In the uncertain world we now find ourselves in, customers seem to be more sentimental, so gifts with sentiments are performing well, such as The Happy Fruit and Veg Farm range, and hearts from East of India. Lisa Angel products are great too. Our bestsellers are the Tiny Matchboxes: each one holds a cute ceramic token and features a thoughtful phrase on the lid. These small keepsakes retail for £6. If you could set three New Year’s resolutions for your business, what would they be? Be more productive with my time and use it to better effect. Buy smarter, and remember our target market when sourcing new product at trade fairs. Our customer base is the ABC1 socio-economic group - aspirational millennial females: “ladies in Mercedes!” And finally, listen to reps and agents more, because they know what’s going on. I plan to sit down with them over a cup of tea in the office, and ask what the top companies and products in their bag are. I’ll also ask for retro targets from suppliers to help focus both us and the companies we trade with.
Cathy Frost Owner Loveone Ipswich Suffolk What’s hot for 2026? Interesting food gifts. What’s not? Wrapping paper was a slow seller last year. What’s next? Developing my food gifts offer and kitchen to tableware. If you could set three New Year’s resolutions for your business, what would they be? Keep doing what you do, always focus on customer service, and learn to create better reels for social media.
Priya Aurora Buyer Lark London 20 stores across London What’s hot for 2026? We’re committing heavily to stationery this year, as it’s been a growing category for us and appeals to all ages. What’s not? We’ve seen a dip in humorous gifting. This has been a huge category for us in recent years, but last year it slowed - potentially due to external political factors. What’s next? We’re opening multiple new shops this year, which is very exciting! If you could set three New Year’s resolutions for your business, what would they be? Find more imaginative ways to motivate staff and create team-building. When expanding, ensure existing shops aren’t neglected. Be more organised with buying!
Andrea Trinkette Owner Trinkette Sowerby Bridge West Yorkshire What’s hot for 2026? Gifts that spark joy and have a cute factor will be very important, such as little inspirational hearts, quotes, humour and kindness-led pieces. I’ve been lucky enough to sell the East of India range for over a decade now, and my customers love the sentiments on the porcelain hearts and coasters, especially for friendship and family birthdays. A recent new range to Trinkette is Rosie Made A Thing, which has drawings that make you smile and words that bring laughter. I’ve also been selling Berni Parker’s cards, cups and glasses for years - again, lovely graphics with a great sense of humour. Soft toys and ‘inner child’ gifts for all ages will continue to be huge. Practical gifts will also increase in popularity, as customers are choosing to spend their money wisely, and are making more considered purchases. What’s next? With more choice online and price points being driven down, I think uniqueness will play a part. People are always looking for something different: personalisation and artisan products. I also think companies that protect their pricing (where possible) and don’t undersell the retailers they supply will be more appealing to independents. If you could set three New Year’s resolutions for your business, what would they be? Firstly, to throw myself into technology. I chose woodwork at school instead of typing as I thought nobody would be interested in IT! I’ve seen the results of a new data system I’m using, and social media posts clearly mean more sales for me, so I know I need to embrace it more. Secondly, I want 2026 to be the year of development of the Trinkette brand, especially expanding the current range with new designs. I sell a lot of my own card and gift range, and I’d like to build on that. Thirdly, to keep being inspired. I still love going to trade shows and seeing things in real life. There’s something lovely about sitting down with a coffee at the end of a busy day, having seen so many lovely products and displays. My plan is to look at the trends earlier in the year, think ahead, and be more organised! Gifts Today 49

OPINION
“From buzzword to business essential” A
Bira (British Independent Retailers Association) CEO Andrew Goodacre explains why he strongly believes 2026 will be the year that independent retailers embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI)
s we pack away the tinsel and lights and settle into the new year, it’s natural to reflect on what lies ahead. Every January, I’m asked the same question: what does the year hold for independent retailers? It’s a question that’s become harder to answer as the retail landscape grows more complex, more competitive, and more unpredictable. But this year, I can answer with unusual confidence: 2026 will be the year that Artificial Intelligence (AI) moves from buzzword to business essential for independent retailers across Britain. I know what you’re thinking. AI sounds expensive, complicated, and frankly, intimidating. It conjures up images of massive tech investments and teams of specialists. But here’s the truth that’s becoming clearer by the day: AI is now the most accessible, affordable, and user-friendly technology revolution we’ve seen in decades. And for independent retailers, it’s nothing short of transformative. Let me be practical about this. I’m not talking about building robots or creating sentient shop assistants. I mean tools that can predict which stock you’ll need next month based on past trends, saving you from costly overstock or embarrassing gaps on your shelves. I’m talking about software that can write your social media posts, design your email campaigns, and respond to routine customer queries while you’re busy serving the people in front of you. These aren’t future possibilities. They’re available now - often for the cost of a monthly coffee subscription. The financial benefits alone should make every independent retailer sit up and pay attention. Time saved on administrative tasks means more time
spent building relationships with customers. Better stock management means less capital tied up in products that won’t sell. More effective marketing means reaching customers you never knew existed. In a sector where margins are tight and every penny counts, these aren’t luxuries - they’re competitive necessities. But there’s something even bigger happening that independent retailers need to understand. The way people search for products is changing fundamentally. Increasingly, shoppers are turning to AI-powered chat interfaces rather than typing keywords into Google. They’re having conversations about what they need, and AI is guiding them to solutions. This shift - which the experts call agentic AI or generative AI - has profound implications for how customers discover businesses like yours. Think about what this means. A customer might ask an AI assistant: “Where can I find a quality independent gift shop in my area that offers personal service?” If you’ve got the right online presence - and if you’ve described your business and your values clearly - that AI could point directly to you. This levels the playing field in a way we haven’t seen before. It’s not about who has the biggest advertising budget. It’s about who best meets the customer’s actual needs. I understand the hesitation. Technology has always moved faster than most of us can comfortably keep up with. But here’s the thing: the independent retail sector has survived and thrived through every previous technological revolution by adapting while staying true to what makes it special. AI isn’t replacing the personal touch, local knowledge, and community connection that indies provide. It’s freeing you up to do more of it.
The retailers who succeed in 2026 and beyond will be those who embrace these tools now. Not because technology is everything, but because it enables you to be better at everything else. The personal service, curated selection, and local expertise remain your greatest strengths. AI simply gives you more time and resources to deliver them. The technology is ready. The tools are accessible. The question is: are we ready to seize the opportunity?
