Scotland’s Trade Fair postponed to March Following the introduction of new Scottish restrictions for events Scotland’s Trade Fair Spring has been postponed until 27-29 March 2022. Although this is a huge disappointment for both suppliers and retailers, it is the sensible and safe route to take and will still allow retailers enough time to source new products for the 2022 season.

A selection of key exhibitors have been sounded out over the move in dates and all have been supportive of the new plans so the majority of exhibitors are expected to participate as usual.

Mark Saunders, Scotland’s Trade Fair Director, said: “Although new restrictions are, at this stage, only in place until 16 January, we have no way of knowing if they will end then and the Show was due to take place from 23-25 Jan. As Q1 buying patterns are going to be uncertain we feel a postponement would be helpful to the trade not least in providing a better trading environment but also a much safer one giving buyers confidence to attend.”

Spring Fair is back!

This February Spring Fair is back with a bang – 6th-9th February 2022.

A

s a leading marketplace for wholesale home, gift, fashion and sourcing, Spring Fair, which also now incorporates fashion destination Moda, is known as a nucleus for creativity, inspiration, trends and order writing, as well as bringing the industry together, building communities, nurturing collaboration, and facilitating relationships that last.

The event was sorely missed by everyone last year with the good news being the live event is full steam ahead and will take place at NEC Birmingham on the 6th – 9th February 2022.

Featuring four key buying destinations – Home, Gift, Fashion and Design & Source spanning over 12 halls of the NEC, as well as the Inspiring Retail Stage which takes on the theme of empowering change featuring inspiring and innovative retailers who are changing their business with a positive impact.

Three days from Sunday onwards.

Do you pre-plan your visit with regards to appointments?

No but I do usually plan a route to visit a lot of my suppliers on each day.

What will be your focus while at Spring Fair – are there any particular products you will be looking for?

I’ll be looking for products for my new shop Collectable, which is a lighting and lifestyle store in the basement of Strawberry Blue.

Also newness for Spring for upstairs, I still have my Easter stock from 2020 so looking to add to that as well as lines for Summer and planning for Christmas 2022.

Do you feel this is a great opportunity for you to spot upcoming trends?

Absolutely.. from display ideas to colour pallettes, I always come back from Spring Fair full of new ideas and inspiration.

Will you be attending any of the seminars that take place during the event?

I have in the past, I found Mary Portas was very inspiring. It really depends on the person doing the presentation.

How important are show only offers to you?

It’s always a bonus but it wouldn’t influence my decision making on the day.

What are you most looking forward to while attending the show this year?

I’m most looking forward to seeing new products, meeting new and existing suppliers and catching up with friends in the same business.

Only informally, we won’t make fixed time appointments – there are some regular suppliers who we have made informal arrangements to see new collections.

What will be your focus while at Spring Fair – are there any particular products you will be looking for?

We will be looking for new products and suppliers together with viewing new collections from our regular suppliers.

Do you feel this is a great opportunity for you to spot upcoming trends?

Totally, walking the show and spotting trends shapes our buying for the whole year.

Will you be attending any of the seminars that take place during the event?

Probably not – time is quite tight.

How important are show only offers to you?

Increasingly important but not something that would make us choose one supplier over an other – a good offer would however get us to commit to orders and forward orders of a line we plan to order and it may well achieve a higher order value than we would otherwise spend.

What are you most looking forward to while attending the show this year?

Connecting with suppliers and agents again. We’ve been doing this for a long time now and have learned it’s the relationships that make the shows interesting/rewarding and fun. It’s hard to build those relationships without meeting face to face.

TRADE TALK: Gifts Today questioned Rex London’s Marketing & Communications Manager Anna Williams on why Spring Fair is important to them as a business and what you can expect to find on their stand.

Why are you exhibiting at Spring Fair this year?

Although we have a great trade website, with all stock online being available to order immediately from our warehouses, there’s no substitute for seeing products up close in person! Having that tangible essence; the ability to hold something in your hand and say, “yes this is great” is such a wonderful thing, and many of our stockists love to come and see us at trade shows for that very reason.

And we love catching up with our stockists! Exhibiting at the Autumn Fair was a real treat, and there was a palpable buzz in the air, with retailers and suppliers keen to see what’s new in the industry. During the height of lockdown many organisers transitioned to digital fairs (which we were delighted to take part in), and we released three editions of our trade catalogue, showcasing our new products and bestselling collections - the latest version is available to download on our website. The demand for these was really positive in lieu of the usual show seasons. But none of this compares to meeting our customers in person, though!

What can visitors expect to find on your stand?

We’ll be showcasing a selection of our Gifts of Random Kindness on our stand at Spring Fair 2022. Of course we’ll be bringing plenty of new launches, as well as bestselling categories such as gifts for the home and garden, lifestyle accessories, a plethora of toys and games, and adorable giftable stationery.

Toys, puzzles and games are a huge category for us at Rex London, with plenty on offer to delight kids of all ages and interests. From brand new construction and DIY kits, to puzzles of varying degrees of difficulty, the focus is on screen-free playtime, with many of our products having a classic retro feel with a modern twist, which can be quite nostalgic for older family members!

Will you be using Spring Fair as a launch pad for new product ranges?

Absolutely! Our amazing in-house design team has been developing some really exciting new prints, and we can’t wait to show them to everyone! We’ve got the Wild Flowers collection inspired by vintage botanical illustrations, the Sharks collection featuring lesser-known species alongside the ever-popular great white and hammerhead sharks, and we’ve been sprinkling some fairy dust on a 2021 favourite to expand on the Fairies in the Garden collection.

Do you envisage any hot trends to emerge during 2022?

Here at Rex London, we’re not necessarily beholden to trends - we tend to do our own thing. But we do listen to our customers! Issues surrounding sustainability and environmental impact are remaining a priority both within the sector and well beyond, and we can’t see that changing any time soon.

Rex London is committed to becoming more sustainable, both in our products as well as our packaging. We first launched our iconic Jumbo Bags back in 2007 (the first in-house designed item), with each one made from the equivalent of 14 plastic bottles. Since then we’ve introduced many eco-friendly items to our product portfolio, and we will continue to do so in 2022! To name but a few, we supply beautifully designed reusable water bottles, charming toys made from wood rather than plastic, and FSC-certified stationery and paper products. Whoever said being sustainable can’t also be stylish?

Our environmental impact is extremely important to us, and we are continually taking steps to improve. Nearly all our gifts now come in cardboard packaging, and we use recyclable material whenever possible. One key aim for us is to make our packing process fully sustainable, and we’re very nearly there - we currently use paper filler and paper tape, and we are no longer purchasing any plastic packing material.

Samantha Gibbs Nest How many days do you intend to visit the show for?

I will, without fail, do every single day.

Do you pre-plan your visit with regards to appointments?

No, not with appointments although I am taking part in the Curated meetings again following a really successful trial in the Autumn. To be honest, I don’t like filling my time with appointments with companies I already deal with (although I will always pop by and say Hi!), I am looking for new at the shows and am so protective over my time.

What will be your focus while at Spring Fair – are there any particular products you will be looking for?

New is my focus but this year. In particular I am looking way ahead to Christmas and products that can support Nest through the occasions on our way. I am looking for colour, and detail and innovation, clever uses of existing categories, nothing is ever truly new but fresh takes are always so inspiring.

Do you feel this is a great opportunity for you to spot upcoming trends?

Absolutely, the trick is knowing which ones you want to encourage!

Will you be attending any of the seminars that take place during the event?

Yes and I love this about the shows. They have become such a hub for generating thought and they are always such a great opportunity to listen to people that know far more than you do!

How important are show only offers to you?

To be honest, I’m not really a fan in terms of searching them out. It’s always a tempting way towards committing but for me that’s never a problem if I think the stock is right for Nest anyway - I don’t struggle to place orders!

What are you most looking forward to while attending the show this year?

All of it... The time out, the new start, the space to think as I walk, the inspiration, and seeing the sheer skill that we as an industry can choose from; seeing the incredibly diverse and vast product selection that is at our fingertips..

Gifts Today spoke with Noah Home and Gift Boutique’s owner Nicola Scarff to find out about their intended visit to Spring Fair this year.

Noah Home and Gift Boutique, Glasgow How many days do you intend to visit the show for?

Much as I would love to attend the whole show I am only managing to escape the ‘’day to day’ and attend over two days Do you pre-plan your visit with regards to appointments?

I tend not to make appointments but because I’ll only have two days to cover a lot of ground (literally!) I will plan my visit by identifying the halls where I will spend most time, together with existing suppliers I would like to visit as well as suppliers that have perhaps caught my attention in the past. I then work the halls pretty methodically otherwise so that I don’t miss anything that I hadn’t planned for.

What will be your focus while at Spring Fair – are there any particular products you will be looking for?

I have played it relatively safe during the pandemic, focussing on what we know works well for us so we will be looking for fresh ideas across our main gifting categories.

We are always looking to fill gaps in men’s gifts – men are notoriously hard to buy ‘little mindings’ for so we are always looking for something different that men will appreciate and not hide in a drawer.

I am also looking to inject some newness to our wedding range and other specific occasions such as retirements and Mother’s Day. Do you feel this is a great opportunity for you to spot upcoming trends?

Absolutely. The scale of the show and the variety on offer really gives an insight into what exhibitors have been focussing on as a result on what has worked well for them in the past as well as their take on future trends. It’s impossible not to get caught up in their infectious energy and enthusiasm.

Not all trends will work for every retailer but there are those that stand out that you know you have to try!

Will you be attending any of the seminars that take place during the event?

In the past I have enjoyed the social media, digital marketing and visual merchandising seminars. I have also been lucky enough to hear a few keynote speakers who are always really inspirational such as Jo Malone, Mary Berry and Mary Portas.

How important are show only offers to you?

I tend not to make a lot of impulsive decisions there and then as it is too easy to get carried away and make mistakes. We don’t have a huge display space to work with so I prefer to take away all my findings and analyse past sales data before making any decisions. I am sure I drive our suppliers crazy but as a previous banker it’s the only way I know! I tend to miss out on show offers as a result.

What are you most looking forward to while attending the show this year?

I am so looking forward to catching up with our existing suppliers and seeing their new collections as well as meeting potential new suppliers and touching and seeing products ‘in real life’!

During the pandemic online shopping has been a lifeline and as essential for wholesale customers as it has been for consumers. However it can be so time consuming and there is no substitute for being able to touch the products and to hear the back stories from their creators which really brings their products to life.

How many days do you intend to visit the show for?

Karen West (Red Card Shop Manager) and I will be going to Spring Fair. We will at this stage be visiting Spring Fair for three days/nights.

How many days do you intend to visit the show for?

I hope to attend for two days – one day to have a good look around / meet with friends and then the second day to place orders.

However, we have heard that two of our big Christmas suppliers are not going to be there so we may not stay for that long.

We usually pre-plan appointments with these two companies (Gisela Graham and Heaven Sends) but otherwise we may book appointments to see people at the show on a day to day basis if their stand is too busy when we are looking around.

What will be your focus while at Spring Fair – are there any particular products you will be looking for?

At Spring Fair we usually do the bulk of our Christmas buying, but as we haven’t attended trade fairs for such a long time we will be looking at everything!

Do you pre-plan your visit with regards to appointments?

I am organised but not that organised! I will have a list of stands I would like to visit, but most of the time it would be adhoc orders or trying to book in for an appointment for the second day.

What will be your focus while at Spring Fair – are there any particular products you will be looking for?

My focus will be on homewares and also outside living. After the lockdown last year more people were entertaining at home in their garden and so we hope to improve on our offerings from last year.

Do you feel this is a great opportunity for you to spot upcoming trends?

Some of the suppliers are really good at introducing a taste of a future trend, so it is always interesting to see what these suppliers offer.

Will you be attending any of the seminars that take place during the event?

Sadly, due to time I don’t think we would have the opportunity to attend any.

How important are show only offers to you?

It is always nice to have a little bit of a discount when buying although this isn’t overly important as I know how tough the market is at the moment.

What are you most looking forward to while attending the show this year?

It will be great to meet up with suppliers who we haven’t really seen for a couple of years due to the climate. It is always nice to be able to see and handle the products rather than just looking at in a catalogue or online.

Show only offers are important and if there is a show offer we will always make the most of it.

What are you most looking forward to while attending the show this year?

We are excited about actually attending a trade show again. We want to see new products and companies and also reconnect with the people behind our favourite brands. There are also a number of shop owners that we want to catch up with.

Do you envisage any hot trends to emerge during 2022?

Understandably with what we’ve all been living through, escapism has a strong pull for people right now. Fragrance can of course offer a sense of escapism for many and we’ve chosen to build on this by designing fragrances for SS22 that encapsulate this feeling completely. At Spring Fair, visitors will be able to sample our Tropical Escape and Every Cloud fragrances that both promote a story of dreamy escapism.

What’s the big news this year on your stand?

Given its importance to the world, we’ll be sharing front and centre of our stand the steps we’re taking as a company to drive towards a greener future. Our Ashleigh & Burwood gift boutique will also be a highlight and within visitors will be able to discover all of our newness for Christmas 2022.

Yes, we are really looking forward to launching several new ranges as well as a completely new collection. We always like to keep these under wraps until the first day of the show.

Do you envisage any hot trends to emerge during 2022?

During the past couple of years, we have seen a growing emphasis on the handcrafted and personal element to gifts: gifts with a ‘story’ of some kind. Many shoppers are becoming more discerning and rejecting mass produced goods in favour of more unique pieces. We see this trend to grow in 2022. We also think that Celebration will be a big thing this year; whether it’s the amazing milestone of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee or smaller get togethers with family and friends, many have realised that life’s special moments need to be recognised.

What’s the big news this year on your stand?

It’s our 20th year in the industry, so Spring Fair will be the kick off to a year of celebrating!

At Joe Davies we love to see and support our customers and there is no better place to do that than at a trade show. We made the decision very early on to support our regular exhibitions, so not attending Spring Fair was never in question for us, if the show is taking place we are there. We missed the show so much last year and we can’t wait to be back.

What can visitors expect to find on your stand?

A very warm Joe Davies welcome awaits all visitors to the stand, there should be a great buzz, with hundreds of new ranges and some great new brands making their debut. We have lots of exciting new developments across Jewellery, fashion, Christmas, home & gift.

Will you be using Spring Fair as a launch pad for new product ranges?

Our Buying Team start working a full 12 months ahead of Spring Fair. We don’t launch ranges in between trade shows so our entire Spring Summer 2022 collection will be launching at the show.

Do you envisage any hot trends to emerge during 2022?

Why are you exhibiting at Spring Fair this year?

It’s been almost two years since we have been able to exhibit at any trade show and we are delighted to kick-off 2022 by attending Spring Fair this February.

During the numerous lock downs, Bloomingville were able to manage their stock levels to almost full capacity. For this reason, we were able to open very many new accounts with retailers who were let down by their other suppliers.

Much of this was done online and so we find ourselves with many new partners who we have yet to meet.

What can visitors expect to find on your stand?

Bloomingville is a ‘multibrand’ house, and visitors will be able to see not only our main brand but also Bloomingville MINI, Creative and the new Illume collection of home fragrances.

Do you envisage any hot trends to emerge during 2022?

We are increasingly seeing that in the home décor category, vases and other deco pieces which depict faces, or the human body are selling well; a trend we expect to continue. Also, textiles from sustainable sources are a real winner right now.

What’s the big news this year on your stand?

Brexit! We have managed to circumnavigate the issues arising from the UK’s decision to leave the EU very well. We pay the tariffs so that our customers don’t have to and we will certainly be pushing this competitive edge on our stand, throughout the show.

Jonny Greves Managing Director - Lesser and Pavey Ltd. Why are you exhibiting at Spring Fair this year?

Lesser and Pavey have been exhibiting at the Spring Fair since it started. It is the major platform to launch the years collection, to meet customers new and existing.

This year we are moving to a new location in hall 5 so enabling us to have a larger stand to ease any concerns about Covid with lots of space to view the products displays in comfort with assistance from regional sales executives.

Everyone has gone Gonk crazy and the trend looks set to explode in 2022. Fashion and fashion accessories are really starting to pick up pace in gift environments. Sentiment gifts are very strong, with friends and family themes particularly stand out. Blues and greys are the hot colour tips.

We are very excited to have just agreed a deal to distribute Xpressions For You exclusively to the independent trade.

We are launching hundreds of new products to entice buyers, from the spheres of home accessories, fragrance, glassware, gifts and much more. Some new products will take forward existing successful ranges whilst others will be brand new products, bringing new spheres and colourways to our homewares and gift collections. Although Christmas may have just been and gone, we will have our new ranges on show for Christmas 2022.

The pandemic and new variants have presented new challenges for all, and the world, but we are very positive about what 2022 will bring as such we have been developing many new ranges that bring a touch of nostalgia, ‘homeliness’, and family values to the fore in depicting designs from British illustrators from years past adding a modern twist.
