THE LEKHA WAY At Lekha, we believe that the ideas of children are rooted more in imagination than those of adults, who tend to think more pragmatically. It is this imagination that the Lekha School of Creative Writing wishes to nurture and develop.

By learning how to turn their imagination into words, children learn how to put ideas on paper, thus making them into successful communicators. As children learn the art of narration, their ideas may not always come across as fluid as one may wish them to, but they are still very concrete ideas that can attain perfection with some training. A big three-headed cat that turns into tomatoes, a spider defeating a lion, or a mad scientist befriending a computer – these are just a few examples of how the Lekha Way can bring out the imagination of a child.

SUMMER CAMPS Lekha Writing Center summer camps focus on academic writing, creative writing and mass communication. Our summer camps start with an academic focus and include educational word games and creative language to build language skills. Our noncompetitive environment creates a positive writing experience for our students. We recognized the inner abilities of each child we teach, acknowledging that each has a story to tell, whether an essay or a poem. Our goal is to build the confidence of each student in their writing abilities and themselves.

Our regular summer camps are offered at locations around the San Francisco Bay Area. We serve students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

ONLINE SUMMER CAMPS COVID 19 has forced us to find alternative ways to interact, to enjoy, and to learn. Fortunately the staff of Lekha Writing Center is experienced in conducting writing classes online.

Lekha Writing Center's online classes will ensure your children enjoy the art of writing as they learn how to write a book and ways to write essays. Highly experienced instructors will

work with children of all abilities to learn both creative writing and academic writing.

Lekha will be conducting 9 weeks of online summer camps over Zoom.

A TYPICAL HALF-DAY AT LEKHA Lesson

Description of Lesson Creative Writing

A typical in-person session Warm up

Campers participate in vocabulary games. These games will lay the foundation for the writing of the day.

Lesson 1: Writer’s block - The Twenty minute Interactive lecture using one of the Lekha Way Lekha Way methods followed by writing individually or in groups.

Lesson 2: Topic of the day Break

Instructor will give a twenty minute interactive lecture on the Topic of the day. Students will work on individual projects, group projects, or outlines This is a good time for children to eat a healthy snack that they have brought from home.

Lesson 3: Progression on Topic Instructor will give a twenty minute interactive lecture on the topic of the day. Students will work on their individual projects.

Clean Up & End of Session

By the end of the session students will have enjoyed and learned quite a bit about writing. It is time to put away what they take home and what they want to keep in their folder to continue working on the next day.

As in previous years, Lekha has its summer camps being offered through several cities.

This year we have camps offered through the following cities: Tracy, San Ramon, Pleasanton, Fremont and Millbrae. Due to the evolving nature of protocols around COVID –19, cities have been updating information on their respective websites for our camps. Lekha has been working with the cities to understand how it can conduct it’s city-run camps safely. We might conduct camps in city-run location if social distancing protocols can be adhered to.

ONLINE SUMMER CAMPS Lekha online summer camp offering will closely mirror our in-person camps. We will

continue to provide the same quality service that we have provided for all these years, while staying safe at home until everything goes back to normal. We have been updating our curriculum and workbooks for the online classes. We are reworking our lesson plans to make our presentations more engaging for our students online.

ONLINE CREATIVE WRITING CAMPS For Ages 6 –14

Creative Writing Get the basics

Fables and Fairytales

Program Description

Students will learn Lekha’s time-tested methods to overcome writer’s block while writing short stories, poems, and short 6/8-6/12 plays.

Folktales include stories from all the genres of literature. The stories are short, interesting and filled with characters that a young child can relate to. During our program, students will write original fables and fairytales.

6/22-6/26 Participants will learn the fundamentals 10.00 am-12.00 noon PST Marvelous Mysteries of writing mystery stories with adventure. 11.00am-1.00pm MST Detectives and sleuths will be the focal 12.00noon-2.00pm CST characters as they find out the culprit and 1.00 PM-3.00pm EST save the victims.

Picture Books and Comic Books

Picture books are stories intended for the beginning reader and are told with limited prose and extensive illustrations.

Students in this class will learn how to convert their stories into picture books.

They will also learn the art of illustrating for the beginning reader. Students will work towards publishing their picture books.

A comic book is a magazine devoted to comic strips. Students will learn the art of telling a story of a character through illustrations and speech bubbles.

Storytelling

Storytelling is a polished form of public speaking and helps build confidence in oneself. Nuances of body language, voice modulation, and character personification will be the focus of the week. Props, movement, and other tools of the trade will be discussed and practiced.

The write4joy writing & publishing app will be used in the classroom for a short time each day. Writers are encouraged to use this app to have continuous access to Lekha curriculum. Their work will be reviewed by Lekha staff. The app will be available free for all Lekha students for three months after start of their first class.

Young Wordsmiths is the online magazine of the Lekha Writing Center.

Material in this magazine is drawn from student writings ’from Lekha anthologies published over the years as well as from current student writings’ from our Lekha Writing Center classes and camps.

Stories, poetry, plays and essays written by students in the Lekha Summer 2020 camps, will also be considered for publication in Lekha's quarterly online magazine- YOUNG WORDSMITHS -after being approved by Lekha Staff.
