THE LEKHA WAY At Lekha, we believe that the ideas of children are rooted more in imagination than those of adults, who tend to think more pragmatically. It is this imagination that the Lekha School of Creative Writing wishes to nurture and develop. By learning how to turn their imagination into words, children learn how to put ideas on paper, thus making them into successful communicators. As children learn the art of narration, their ideas may not always come across as fluid as one may wish them to, but they are still concrete ideas that can attain perfection with some training. A three-headed cat that turns into tomatoes, a spider defeating a lion, or a mad scientist befriending a computer – these are just a few examples of how the Lekha Way can bring out the
imagination of a child.
Summer Camps Lekha Writing Center summer camps focus on academic writing, creative writing and mass communication. At locations around the San Francisco Bay Area, we serve students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Lekha’s summer camp programs start with an academic focus and include educational word games and creative language to build language skills. Our noncompetitive environment creates a positive writing experience for our students. We recognized the inner abilities of each child we teach, acknowledging that each has a story to tell, whether an essay or a poem. Our goal: building the confidence of each student in their writing abilities and themselves.

Early reader chapter books are intended for beginning Writing Chapter Books 1 readers and are told with a limited number of illustrations. 2nd-3rd Students in this class will write complete stories and use illustrations to help tell the story better. Chapter books are books intended for intermediate readers and are told with extensive prose with a limited number of Writing Chapter Books 2 illustrations. Students in this class will learn how to convert 4th - 5th their short stories into longer stories. The art of illustrations for the intermediate reader will also be discussed. Chapter books are books intended for intermediate readers and are told with extensive prose with a limited number of illustrations. Story Writing Fantasy & Science Fiction
Story Writing – Genres
Dive into a world of magical creatures or travel through time! Create characters that exist only in one’s imagination or those that can only be driven by technology. This 2nd—8th program focuses on two popular genres fantasy and science fiction. Students will write stories in these genres A variety of fiction and nonfiction genres will be the focus during this session. They will progress into genre writing and learn how each genre has its own set of particular rules that drives character creation, setting, and plot. During the 2nd—8th second half of the sessions they will choose one of their short stories and improve upon that.

SUMMER CAMPS 2019 Over the years Lekha has been trying out new ways to help children enjoy writing. We started in 2006 with just a handful of methods, which helped stir their imagination. We taught participants the joy of illustrating their stories and binding their books in various ways. In 2010, we added mass communication and presentation to the curriculum. In 2014 we added components which made grammar and comprehension fun and we made our camps a little shorter. Last year, in 2018, we tried out our new writing app write4joy to aid with publishing. This year Lekha will conduct over a hundred camps in Eighteen locations spread over 12 cities. Some of these camps will be run through respective city recreation centers, while others will be directly run by Lekha in leased facilities. Registration for city run camps can be done via their websites. Lekha will process registrations for camps run directly on the Lekha website itself through a third party registration City

Participants will learn how to refine and develop their academic writing skills. Students will learn the art of correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar through interactive lessons. 2nd-3rd Compositions will be introduced through paragraph structure. They will also learn how to plan and outline paragraphs and essays properly before writing, as well as how to revise their Students will learn the art of writing essays. The purpose of literary analysis is to break down parts of literature into its components and to evaluate a piece of writing in order to explain it better. The ability to analyze literature is 6th - 8th useful for anyone that wishes to be part of the academic or professional world. This week students will analyze different types of literature—stories, poems, plays, and essays and will learn how to evaluate them.

High School Program Students will learn and practice different types of essays required for high school essays. They will also work on personal statements. Every narrative essay gives the writer a chance to showcase their life experiences and beliefs with readers. A personal statement requires the writer to think critically about their experiHigh School Essay & 9th -12th ences and reflect upon themselves. In this the Personal Statement class, the student will learn how to include insights about their abilities and strengths in an essay format that focuses upon personal growth. These essays are particularly important for students applying to institutions of higher learning.
Publishing Workshop
Young authors will work on publishing a work of their choice. They can choose from writing 9th -12th articles for magazines, short stories, picture books, chapter books, novels, graphic novels, chap books (collection of poems), or plays.

write4joy The Next Generation of Wordsmiths
LEARN WRITE AUTHOR PUBLISH
The write4joy writing & publishing app will be used in the classroom for a short time each day. Writers are encouraged to use this app to have continuous access to Lekha curriculum. Their work will be reviewed by Lekha staff. The app will be available free for all Lekha students for three months after start of their first class.

Young Wordsmiths is the online magazine of the Lekha Writing Center. Material in this magazine is drawn from student writings’ from Lekha anthologies published over the years as well as from current student writings’ from our Lekha Writing Center classes and camps. Stories, poetry, plays and essays written by students in the Lekha Summer 2019 camps, will also be considered for publication in Lekha's quarterly online magazine- YOUNG WORDSMITHS -after being approved by Lekha Staff.
