PACKAGING DICTIONARY

Here are a few terms we’ve used these last few months when working with you to create your custom packaging!

PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM (PMS)

PMS has a wider range of colours when compared to CMYK (4-Colour Printing). PMS organises colours by numbers followed by a letter C, U or M (respectively standing for “coated,” “uncoated” and “matte,”).

FINISH

A range of coatings or printing effects applied to packaging; this includes matte, glossy and food-safe finishes.

SHELF APPEAL

How a product’s design looks on display, especially compared to competitors on a shelf (in a grocery store). It’s important that the design of your products stands out and draws in new customers.

PALLETS

A flat transport structure that supports boxes of mass produced products, often in the form of wood. Packaging shipments from overseaes come on cargo pallets!

BLEED OR BLEEDING EDGE

The space outside of the printing margins, between the printing image and the page. The bleed area allows for movement and design inconsistencies in the printing process, and provides a safe clearance space for die-cutting!

BEVEL

The edge of a box, window or design element which is not a sharp 90 degree angle. A bevel is used to soften edges for safety and durability. A rounded corner is more sturdy than a sharp corner!
